Facebook

Consider sharing it with your friends.

Facebook recently recruited Mina Lefevre, MTV's former head of scripted programming. This news is particularly relevant as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously hinted at a short-form programming business strategy similar to Google's YouTube Red.

Original content is growing and profitable landscape with key players like Amazon and Netflix spending a bulk of their revenue in content creation. Considering Facebook's history of copying snapchat, it wouldn't be surprising for them to play the "me too" game.

What do you think of Facebook TV? Would you watch original Facebook content in your timeline?

Comments & Feedback

Student

Like all of Facebook's other attempts to get involved in the new craze in social media trends, they are just blurring the lines even further.  I would not watch Facebook TV and I think Facebook should try to improve and dominate it's original functions.

Student

I could see Facebook TV becoming extremely profitable, if executed correctly. With over 1 billion users, a TV service given to all of them would be an immense addition into the market share of TV.

Student

I do not like the idea of Facebook TV. I don't think they can think of anything original anymore. It seems to me that they have run out of ideas and are just copying other companies ideas to stay up to date. They have lost their title of being an innovator. I would not watch original Facebook content on my timeline because are barley use the app to begin with.

Student

I personally would not watch Facebook TV.

Something about watching TV from a social media website, just seems off to me and it doesn't seem like it would really catch on as well as any other media used for watching movies/television shows.

Student

Interestingly enough, in my opinion, Facebook is already competing when out comes to streaming media. With their new live streaming function, businesses, individuals, and public figures can broadcast to their followers by simply turning this feature on on their homepage. Other than streaming niche markets (Twitch for gaming, for example), Facebook has easily provided the most accessible live option, even though this existed on Twitch and YouTube beforehand.

As for original content, I believe it's inevitable. Facebook is already beginning to allow YouTubers to mirror their channels on Facebook with similar functionality. Thus knowing that this will happen, it will take a bit for me to adjust from using YouTube (far too) frequently. If the content is entertaining enough, I may watch.

Student

I honestly would not. I hate that so many apps are bluring together because they are all trying to adapt the same new functions.  I think that obviously everyone wants to enter a growing market, but it is starting to get excessive.  Suddenly Instagram has stories, Facebook is trying to add TV and stories, and all of the most-used apps are becomming almost identical. I think we need more pronounced lines between them for a more unique experience.

Student

To me, I wouldn't watching Facebook TV, I could watching Tv on my loptop and I think Facebook was a great social media for people connect their's friends, but it is not for TV. Maybe it will becoming the wrong chose. It should be a social site but not TV for Facebook. There are still lots kind of TV was not too much people watching so do not make it be truly thing.

Student

Personally, I wouldn't watch Facebook TV. I have a TV for that and a laptop for Netflix! Facebook is a great social site that has engaged a ton of people with being able to connect with others. Facebook has been on the "me too" train for a while now because now there are filters that you can add to your pictures, which is similar to Snapchat. I believe Facebook should stick to its original social media strategy and continue to connect people that way.

Is Mark Zuckerberg seeking more money? It seems like he is willing to jeopardize all of Facebook's success with Facebook TV. People are going to turn that down as fast as they can turn down a collar.

Student

I believe this is a terrible step for facebook, I believe face book came to far to do this and having this is extremely pointless. I believe facebook should get back to their roots and not do this. There are already Instagram and Snapchat having this kind of things nad it's almost pointl to bring this to Facebook.

Student

Facebook always copy other company's idea. However, I am still expected to see how the facebook TV it is. It should be very creative to compete with Youtube TV which already has a big market. So I like everything that is creative, like Apple which almost beat its all competitors, and I think I will watch original facebook content in my timeline.

Student

I would only be interested in Facebook Tv if it offered something that the others do not. It would have to be so unique.

Student

If Facebook had TV, I would probably not want to start watching it in the beginning. After awhile, I would give in and probably watch it, but I would be hesitant. I think Facebook is a cop out, and likes to copy everyone it sees succeeding, so I would want to boycott it originally.

Student

It would be interesting if Facebool could provide content and features that provide an enhanced social experience which I don't think that Youtube Red pulls off either.

Student

I don't think that going towards a "TV Platform" would be a smart choice for Facebook. I feel like it wiill become an over saturated market with everyone trying to rush to the new "big thing". I think their audience will see it as them just hopping on the bandwagon as well. I personally would not watch it because I think it's lazy by them to just hop on a trend. The difference between Faceebook and these other platforms is that the other platforms are made for video consumption. That is YouTube, Hulu and Netflix's main purporse. Along with that point, Amazon is not a a social media platform, it is a market place. I just think Facebook should invest their money to create a trend and not join one.

Student

I am not 100% behind Facebook TV. I dont think the Facebook community would take to this too well either as, the organic use and community of Facebook is not around TV. I think users already have Netflix and things like that for that reason and may not want to incorporate TV watching into Facebook. This to me may have the Google+ effect..."we didnt necessairly ask for this feature, so we arent going to use it". I couldn't see myself watching content in my TL. For the most part, when I look at timelines I'm moving fast, so I for sure wouldn't want to slow down to "watch" something like that.

Student

Facebook TV does not sound appealing to me at all. If it is something I am going to have to pay for I am not going to watch it. The majority of content that I watch comes straight from YouTube or TV. Adding another platform like Facebook TV is just too much and it is another subscription I do not want to pay for.

Student

Facebook TV, if done correctly, could revolutionize how we watch television in the future. With more and more mobile watching features available today, people are able to watch their shows through their phones. Yet, Facebook has over 1 billion users, and if All of those users had the same television plan, it would be massive. It could be very cool and successful, and I would try it out!

Student

From my perspective, I don't think I will use Facebook TV. Because in my mind, I think Facebook is a social media app, I use it to upload some posts. It's enough, due to we already have Youtube that we can watch TV.

Student

I don't think I will choose Facebook TV to watch. If I want to watch some video or the TV shows, the first website that I come up with it YouTube. And I don't want to spend my time to get to know another video watching website.

Student

I don't think I would ever use Facebook TV. I use Facebook to pretty much post pictures and connect with my family members. I can't see myselfing choosing to go onto Facebook to watch their original content versus going on Netflix or watching normal television. Although it is a unique idea, I don't believe it would help Facebook grow and it would level off pretty quickly. They should consider new unique ideas or take that budget and put it towards something different that is more likely to help promote their brand.

Student

As a huge movie and TV watcher I am sure that this is something that I would never watch. As I scroll down my Facebook page I find myself watching videos that I think I would enjoy. I dont believe this is something that I would be interested in. Although this may be good idea, I think Facebook would be better off investing their money in other ways.

Student

I don't think I would watch something like Facebook TV. I hardly watch videos on YouTube anymore either. Facebook should put their money into a more engaging/interesting feature to attract different audiences.

Student

For me, I would probably just continue to use Facebook as a social media just as I do Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. I don't think I would neccesarily use Facebook TV, because I like to use Facebook to just scroll through and look at other people's timelines. I have watched a few Netflix original TV shows, but I like to consistenly watch the shows on netflix that aren't original ones such as One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, and Parenthood. I think the whole concept of Facebook TV is cool, because my brand The Chicago Blackhawks also have Blackhawk TV which I sometimes watch, but I think it needs to be adveritsed more for people to have an interest in it.

Student

I had doubts at first about Netflix originals, thinking that they would be cheesy, or poorly casted/acted, but now I am a huge fan of Stranger Things, Orange is the new Black, and many other Netflix originals.  I am wary of Facebook TV only because Facebook is utilized for social media and connecting with others, whereas Netflix and Amazon have a large following of TV viewers, making it a better market for TV programming.  I am not certain that I would or wouldn't watch original Facebook content in my timeline but I would definitely give it a chance.

Student

For me I would use Facebook for social media and watch timeline but I might not use Facebook TV. Because I would watch video or tv on the video platform like Youtube, Netflix and etc. I would think about is Facebook TV have same quality as Youtube and Netflix. I would rather try more mature, with a long period of time video platform than new platform. However, Facebook TV is a good idea of expand their value. It might attract people for those want to try new thing. But for me, I would not use Facebook TV, I would watch Facebook timeline.

Student

I think Facebook TV would be odd. I use Facebook for social media purposes and thats it. Yes, I watch videos on Facebook, but Facebook TV would almost be too much. Like you have previously noted about the "me too" game, I think Facebook TV would simply be overkill.

Student

In order for me to want to watch Facebook TV content, they'd have to surpass what Netflix and Hulu have to offer by a long stretch. I've already signed up for these 2 streaming services that I enjoy, so I find it convenient to continue to use these services. I think of Facebook as a social media sight to interact with otehrs rather than watch tv. I've learned to never say never, but if they're going to play the "me too" game, it needs to be a little more like "me too, but better."

Student

I might, however I have not paid for YouTube Red and seem to be getting by just fine, so it would depend on cost, quality and popularity. Would I pay for a subscription to watch content like those Tasty baking/recipe videos that clutter my timeline? Absolutely not. If Facebook was able to produce Netflix-quality shows? Possibly.

Student

I would not watch original Facebook content. For me, Facebook is a social media site so it is not a place I would go to to watch TV. Whereas Netflix and Amazon are video streaming services so it makes sense for them to have original content. I can see Facebook testing the original content and it not going very well.

Whereas Netflix and Amazon are video streaming services so it makes sense for them to have original content. I can see Facebook testing the original content and it not going very well.

Student

I would. I imagine it would be much like youtube where it would be user created content which would mean that some would skyrocket to the top while others did not. Then would come the original sereies by them which would make or break them as a main stream streming service.

Student

I think that this would be a good idea for Facebook to take advantage of, but they would need to utilize it in an effective way. I am constantly watching videos on Facebook so as long as they produce interesting original content that their viewers would be interested in, I think this concept could work. As of now I think I would probably just stick to Amazon, Hulu or Netflix because they have been in this particular industry for a while now and know exactly what they are doing- even though I am interested to see what Facebook TV is like once it comes out. Side note- are they planning to charge people for this service? If so that would be a big game changer for me because I already have subscriptions with various other sites.

Student

I do not think Facebook TV will be effective, there are to many other platforms that are already doing the same thing, Facebook already has a lot of other features that are already very effective. I feel this will be something users just scroll past on their timeline they will not actually take the time to watch it. I would not watch Facebook content on my timeline.

Student

I think Facebook TV would be worth the company looking into because a lot of people are switching to watching TV online. Also, many Facebook users, such as myself, are watching video clips on Facebook already. This being said, Facebook TV would not be that hard of a concept for people to adapt. This could attract a lot of attention from all of their current viewers. People are always looking for the new best thing. Why not change it up and adapt to where society is heading? I say go for it, and I would watch original Facebook content in my timeline.

Student

Since most people watch plenty of videos daily as they scroll through their Facebook timeline, I don't think it would be a bad idea for Facebook to get in on this trend. Videos are already easily accessible while on the Facebook app or on a computer, therefor adding TV onto people's individual timelines would be very successful. I myself know I would watch content, if the creators over at Facebook are putting videos or TV in front of me, and all I have to do is click to watch, I'm interested.

Student

I think this is definately an interesting road that Facebook is going down. I already watch a ton of videos on Facebook everyday as it is. I would be interested in participating in this. I think it's interesting already because of the cable cutting that's going on around the industry and how important streaming is becoming.

Student

Considering the amount of different videos I already watch off of facebook daily. I would definitely be interested in watching facebook tv.  I think this would be a great idea for facebook to better themselves in the social media world.

Student

Facebook TV sounds interesting especially since Facebook really hasn't missed yet with a new idea since their creation. Netflix has been coming out with a ton of original content lately, most of which I have not been a fan of but I believe that with Facebook being so profitable they will be able to find appropriate resources to make it successful. I would like to see a filter feature where I can see some types of their TV that I like and others I can choose to not.

Student

I'm interested in many different entities putting out original content as I believe that it enriches and enhances the overall pool of content when it comes from a variety of sources. I don't think I would like to see original content pop up in the same way my families vacation photos do because if i'm looking for something to wathc I will obviously go and search for it and I think it would be annoying if unsolicited shows and movies were always popping up on Facebook. Facebook clearly has the money to employ the right people to make this work and I believe it would at least be a mild success.

Student

Facebook TV sounds interesting, but I am not sure of how popular it will be. There arleady so many online TV outlets like Netflix and Hulu. For Facebok to be successful, I would say they need to offer something new along with is that the other sites don't have. Depending on what new ideas they have will persuade me to watch it or not. I am interested to see what it will be like though.

Student

Facebook sounds interesting, but honestly, I don't think I'm going to watch it. Netflix is popular enough and I think most people will stick with it. Unless FB TV can give the audience some new type of content. I think that people already have a fixed mind that  think that FB is a social media rather than where we can watch the TV.

Student

Facebook TV sounds good but I still need to know the content on the TV. I'd love to enjoy something free and great such as youtube and facebook. Since facebook has a lot of users and if it could become a topic I think I will follow. I hope this Facebook TV would surprise me.

Student

I don't think its a wrong move for Facebook. However, there are too many platforms now that try to generate "original" content and it gets extremely exclusive and expensive. In addition, if Facebook decides to make it a paid subscription platform, there will also be issues with that. I was super excited to when I first heard about YouTube Red and couldn't wait for exclusive content made by my favorite creators. Once they mentioned it was a paid subscription it immediately turned me away, and I assume the same for many others.

Student

I think that Facebook TV is defintely an intersting option to explore. I feel like not that many people would be a big fan of it. I cannot imagine myself sitting there and going on Facebook to watch TV. I also just feel like social media outlets are just getting cluttered. They are featuring too many things instead of staying with their original content. Facebook I think is the primary one for this. It really has changed what it origibally was which is good and bad. I think it is awesome how their is facebook ads and facebook business and such. I do not think that Facebook LIVE is that great. I also think that Facebook TV is just something that is takign away from the nature of just sitting and watching TV with your family. I think that in this day and age by the time I am 30 I think that families and friends will barely interact because they will be so caught up in social media and social media will probably have everything they are looking for on it.

Student

I honestly would not care for FB TV. I think Facebook should stick with what they know that people like. I know that a lot of people my age really dont like it when other companies play the "me too" game because we want inovation not just the same thing across all platforms. I would not watch Facebook original content and I already find myself spending less and less time on facebook and know of a lot of people giving up facebook and other social media from their phones in general and just visit it rarely on their laptops

Student

I love Facebook, I will sit on there when I am waiting in line or bored between class and scroll through my timeline feed. I also love to stop and watch certain videos that I find interesting on Facebook, like cooking hacks, DIY's and weird waking videos. though if the video is too long or gets boring I will move on to the next post without even thinking about it. Also, Facebook started to "live" stream videos and yes, I love some of the videos like breaking news or watching certain events, but I hate when my friends will start live videos. They are boring and just gives them another outlet to voice their opinions and push their opinions on me. I believe Facebook Tv could be a hit or miss. Many other companies already beat them to the game and established their name with the viewing audience and it will be hard for Facebook to compete with them.

Student

I think that Facebook TV sounds like an interesting idea, but personally, I don't think I would watch it. As noted, Amazon and Netflix are already extremely popular and successful and I think it would be hard for Facebook to catch up. Also, I think people would want to use Facebook just for social media purposes and not Facebook TV. There would be too much happening on the site at once and it could become cluttered.

Student

Facebook TV will scary other competitors. Firstable, most people are using facebook for free.

They have more chance to watch facebook TV. If the Facebook TV release, I will defeinetly use it.

If it is free to watch

Student

I think Facebook TV sounds like an interesting concept. The one thing that has me curious is what would it cost for people to watch this content on their timelines? Facebook is free for users to create accounts, while other programs and subscription services like YouTube Red and Netflix cost money. I think I would watch the content on Facebook TV,  given that it's probably my most-used social networking platform, however, I would not pay for it.

Student

Facebook TV sounds interesting but not very intriguing.  I think there are already enough TV streaming options available online where I wouldn’t switch over to Facebook to watch the same content.  I believe Facebook should’ve already come out with TV streaming if they wanted to compete in today’s market.  Unfortunately, they are a little late on TV streaming content.
