Facebook

Consider sharing it with your friends.

Facebook recently recruited Mina Lefevre, MTV's former head of scripted programming. This news is particularly relevant as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously hinted at a short-form programming business strategy similar to Google's YouTube Red.

Original content is growing and profitable landscape with key players like Amazon and Netflix spending a bulk of their revenue in content creation. Considering Facebook's history of copying snapchat, it wouldn't be surprising for them to play the "me too" game.

What do you think of Facebook TV? Would you watch original Facebook content in your timeline?

Comments & Feedback

Student

I dont think  its that bright of an idea because most people that i know that still utilize facebook, its not for mostly entertainment purposes, but more so to connect and network with people they know etc.

Student

Honestly, I seldom use Facebook. I do not have any interests in Facebook TV. Because Youtube is already a big company to execute like TV things, and it has most users search on it . I think Facebook TV cannot compete with it. As you mentioned, Facebook is not the first time to copy others' idea. For me, I never heard and use any same functions like Snapchat on Facebook. If it produce Facebook TV, I will not use it either.

Student

Facebook TV would not make sense considering the context. It is too late to the game, users are already brand loyal to streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon. People use Facebook to connect and interact with others. They will use other sites that are more specifically focused on video content to consume video media. Personally, I do not think Facebook would benefit from playing the “me-to” game anymore. Consumers are attracted to innovation and creativity, Facebook TV would be nothing new.

Student

I think the idea of Facebook TV is completely unnecessary and there will be no success with it. I believe majority of Facebook users come to their news feed to view their friends content, news videos and other entertaining videos. I would rather get my TV show content from the central streaming websites like Netflix or HBO rather than blending my social media sites with my TV shows.

Student

I think that there is no money for Facebook to gain from investing money in creating a Facebook orignal series. Also I think this would be a stretch of Facebook to venture into as this has no purpose related to their usual social media. Another reason I do not think this is a good business move as people most likely would not want to pay to watch TV on Facebook.

Student

I see Facebook TV as another thing that people would be reluctant to adapt to but eventually be interested. Personally I prefer my normal Facebook content in my timeline. I prefer to use another platform like Netflix to watch actual TV on.

Student

I don't think Facebook TV is necessary at all. There are so many other channels in which to watch things online. I feel like maybe people would be more annoyed at the fact the Facebook is trying to do everything that other media hubs do and wouldn't even bother to try and watch their "TV". There are so many "Netflix orginals" now and I just can't see me ever watching anything advertised as a "Facebook original". I personally think that Facebook needs to sort of stay in their own lane and stick to what they were designed for. TV is definitely not that and I just don't see how it is at all necessary for them to start this.

Student

I think facebook TV will be popular. Facebook has a strong consumer base, so it will attract a lot of users to try a new product when it launched. It is smart to program a TV app during this time, because we know that TV app is popular and people love to use it. Youtube and Neflix did the tests for Facebook. Facebook combines the original functions with video that would be intresting.

For me, I would watch Facebook TV rater than original Facebook. Because it is more intresting.

Student

I think Facebook absolutely no need for TV, because there are many channels to watch TV, and I was accustomed to my frequently-used TV channels, so I would not watch original Facebook content in my timeline.

Student

I'm not sure if Facebook TV would be popular or not.  It seems as if there would be no real in between, it will either be super popular or a huge waste of time and money.  Personally, I do not think that I would use Facebook TV since I use Netflix.  A lot of people would probably feel the same way about the matter, since they are already Amazon or Netflix users.  Currently, Facebook seems a bit crowded with all of the videos that are constantly being shared.  Sometimes people are turned away from all the clutter that Facebook has, especially since not all the videos their friends are sharing would peak their interests.  Facebook would have to implement an organized method to use for their TV in order to be effective amongst users.  Also, it would be in their best interest to take the elements of Netflix to the next level so they have more to offer to users who already have a system that is working for their show/movie watching needs. If Facebook TV had an exciting element that stood out amongst the competition, people may be willing to check it out and leave other mediums behind.  There is a need for online TV series and movies since the TV industry is switching from more traditional means to being more online then ever before.  If Facebook could create shows/movies to reach different target audiences in ways that are better than Amazon and Netflix, Facebook TV has the potential to be very profitable.

Student

I think it would depend on how long the content is. There are videos on Facebook now that we stop and watch, but I have never sat and watched a video that is more than seven or eight minutes long. Facebook is a social media site, I expect to scroll through the content and look at each post briefly and never in too much detail. I wouldn't like scrolling through the site, seeing a post from my mom, my cousin and then a 30 minute Facebook TV show. I know for sure I would not watch it. This brings up the question though would Facebook TV be free? Or then would we have to start paying a subscription, like Netflix and Hulu. I can't imagine the latest TV shows being on the site for free, and like I said even if it was I don't see myself watching the show on Facebook. As far as original content I probably would watch, but like I said only if they were short clips. I only use Facebook on my phone. I hardly ever log into Facebook on the computer. I'm not trying to watch a thirty minute TV show on my small phone screen. Maybe Facebook TV would be more appealing to those who use the platform primarily on their computer? I can't say I'm surprised Facebook is going to try something like this, streaming shows is becoming more popular than watching the show on TV when it airs so it makes sense. Why not try to hop on board. But this time in my opinion I think Facebook should stay in their lane.

Student

I wouldn't take part in watching Facebook Tv. There are already so many other sources for viewing television, because of this I believe Facebook is way behind. With that being said, I'm a firm believer that when social media sites continuing adding new things to follow "popular trends", all they do is diminsh themselves versus doing something positive. An example is Twitter, I used Twitter all the time until they continued making changes to it to the point where I got so frusterated continuesly needing updates or having to relearn where everything was on the site that I ultimately just stopped using it. I feel Facebook would be doing the same thing. People enjoy Facebook the way it is - they like staying up-to-date with their friends and family, and staying in contact. Many social media users most likely already have their favorite forms of television veiwing sites, so why add one more feature to your site that may push away users who prefer using Facebook at the bare minimum of staying up-to-date.

Student

I think Facebook is trying to stay relevant by copying any other social media platforms people are expressing an interest in. They recently added features that are incredibly similar to Instagram. They are branching out too far into other social media channels and are losing the identity of their brand. I would not subscribe or pay to watch Facebook original content, for I think they are reaching too far out of their realm. Facebook should be focusing on their core mission of connections and should consider integrating other brands such as LinkedIn which serve similar purposes.

Student

I don't think I would watch original FB content on my timeline, as of now I only go on FB if I have to for work or school. There is so much nonsense that is floating around I think this would just be another waste of time. Netflix and Amazon already have the upperhand when it comes to original content as well so I think FB would struggle to compete with them, specially because people don't go on FB to watch TV.

Personally, now I would not use Facebook TV because it is far beyond its time. I am not saying that one day Facebook TV will not be successful, but Facebook users and the general target audience would have to warm up to this new brand extension. It is necessary for Facebook to tackle this market in advance because companies are constantly growing and improving through technology and marketing strategy. 10 years ago, people would laugh at the idea of watching TV or searching the internet on their phone, but now it is a prominent feature of cell phones. Eventually, Facebook TV will grow and gain users, but currently people are not looking to stray away from Netflix, Hulu, or other TV service providers.

Student

I think Facebook is trying to tackle too many things at once. They recently came out with their marketplace feature, and I haven't heard of anyone using that. If anything, I could see this Facebook TV idea spinning into something that consisted of DIY videos, food videos, or makeup/fashion advice. However, I don't think they should try expanding into Netflix's territory with original shows. I would be open to watching original short videos produced by Facebook, but I would not tune in to watch full videos/episodes.

Student

I think Facebook TV can expand the media areas for Facebook, it is new programming for their company, but I don’t think it is a good idea. I think they need to focus on social network which area they are adept. Right now there are already have YouTube red, Netflix for TVthese system already use In a long time. they have stable customers. People will to try Facebook TV, but it will not be a main programming. I will watch original Facebook content in my timeline, but just for trying.

Student

for the impact, texting will only become more popular along with Twitter. MySpace is already dying and Facebook probably won't be far behind. These trends will probably make people a little less social when it comes to direct interaction, but will also become more connected with people in the long run.

Student

Facebook has a histroy of copying snapchat. However, it is more popular than sanpchat now.

Many huge succeeds come from imitations, but it will be better. So, I think it is hard to tell if Facebook TV isn't a good idea. Facebook has a numeorus audiences to response its new products and new programming. I think maybe we should give Facebook a chane and wait for what it will bring to us.

Student

Facebook is already throwing so much garbage into my timeline now. I don't think Facebook TV is a good idea and should steer clear of it. All it would do is add more fluff for the users to sort through.

Student

Facebook needs to chill; it doesn't have to own all media. Definitely wouldn't watch.

Student

I believe that FB TV is not a good idea. Each platform has a specific purpose. In the past, Facebook has been characterized for letting the user post the greatest variety of content including articles, videos, pictures, etc. Adding TV might be turning who they are into a forced and confusing attempt to own every form of online social interaction.

Student

I would not watch original Facebook content on my timeline. My timeline is already clouded enough I think I would think the videos they posted would be farce or not entertaining. I believe Facebook is headed in a direction where a lot of people are beginning to believe everything they see on their is not true. They have had a lot of bad press lately, especially with the election. I do not think this would help their case and I think it is just trying to do too much. They should work on what they already have and update it.

Student

The concept is good but i think they copy something from other platform. Therefore, I think Facebook is late and I don't think I would watch Facebook TV. It doesn't seem like it fits the purpose of the website. But I would be willing to see how it would like.

Student

I don’t think I would watch Facebook TV, and to be honest, I don’t like Facebook copy other’s idea, they should be more creative,  and I have other app only use for watch TV, and I think this idea would make Facebook to complicate for use, and maybe bad for Facebook’s position and future development.

Student

I'm all for it, people jumped at Amazon and Netflix for creating content instead of just delivering it, and it has been a huge gain for the viewing public that those two are spending money on this. Look forward to all the great content that they can create.

Student

To be honest, I would not be very interested in Facebook TV. Facebook is one of the social media websites that I use the most but I am not completely on board with this idea. I think Facebook is always changing and coming up with something new which is cool but also a little much. I think for now they should keep things how they are and hold off on this. I could see this pulling away Facebook users, especially older Facebook users. I know for my grandparents, Facebook is already so confusing, I don't think "Facebook TV" would help.

Student

Facebook TV makes sense on some level. They already have Facebook live, which is used by many networks already. most major news outfits like cnn, fox news, nbc, cnbc, and abc all use facebook live to stream important events during the day. I already will watch some TV on facebook when i watch CNN live or Fox News on their live feed. I am not sure if i would watch new facebook original content though. It is variable for me. If they went all out and got some major actors like Netflix did with Kevin Spacey and House of Cards, or went crazy with the budget on something like Amazon did with The Grand Tour, I would at least give it a look. For me it would depend on the content and the cost. Given that I already have Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, the content would have to be very good to keep me suscribed, and they would have to get new content before amazon or netflix, or even get the exclusive rights to it for me to want to maintain a subsctiption there.

Student

I understand Facebook's attempt at trying to keep up with the next best thing but I don't know if it will be successful especially if its strategy is similar to YouTube Red. From what I've seen, people aren't too keen with YouTube Red so I don't know if it's smart to follow their strategy.

I personally would not watch Facebook TV as that's not why I'm using the platform. Sure, I'll occasionally watch short videos (max. 2 minutes) but it's not a place where I would actively go to watch videos.

Student

The concept is great but every time they copy something from another app I still rely mainly on the original source. So, I think Facebook is a little late and due to myself already spending money on other streaming sites, I am unlikely to pay anything to gain access to Facebook TV unless they have some spectacular unique feature.

Student

With every application and provider coming out with new content and capabilities, I find it hard to decide what I want to watch with how many existing options there are available now. I don't think I would like or use Facebook TV because one of the things that I actually like about Facebook is that I can scroll through my feed and watch multiple short clips and keep scrolling without being glued to a program for an hour. Youtube Red is different in the sense that the videos that exist can be short or long, so it could go either way. You never really come across a video on Facebook that is longer than 5 minutes.

Student

I think Facebook might be a little late to the party when it comes to services like this. The other brands such as Netflix already have name recognition and a solid consumer base. However, if they could do something different with their service and produce unique content, it might turn into a success.

Student

Facebook plays the "copycat" game because they strive to keep up with the next big thing. I believe the way they conduct business is intelligent, they are massive yet versatile enough to adapt great ideas from others and improve upon them. That said, why not add Facebook TV? They could run 30 second to 1 minute previews to specific target markets on our timelines and then have us land on a different tab or app (like messenger) to watch the full-length show. I would watch the shows, and I think Facebook should implement a TV platform.

Student

As much as I would like to say I would not watch Facebook TV, I would most likely watch original content if it were to appear on my timeline. This reminds of Instagram "stories" copying Snapchat. The "me too" game can seem annoying to users (such as myself) at first, however, rarely do users stop using media because it adds a new feature. For example, if Snapchat were never to have updated (i.e., no stories, no outside content, no videos), it most likely would have died out back in 2013. Social media stays relevant by evolving.

Student

I personally wouldn't mind the idea of Facebook TV. I would not be an avid viewer, however I do find short clips enjoyable when scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed. I think that some poeple would be very into the idea, but I also see the negatives as well. There are many different shows out there and I see where people would feel that there may not be room for more. I think that the idea is interesting and would like to see where it is headed.

Student

I think that it is cool that Facebook is coming up with its own content, but I think they are a little late to the game. I personally would not watch it because I don't use Facebook to watch videos often. I think it would get mixed in with the timeline among many other things. But who knows, maybe it will be a success!

Student

I personally wouldn't be very interested in Facebook TV. I already find it very hard to find content I'm looking for because of all the clutter on Facebook. I also only have a select few TV shows I watch so I wouldnt have much use for another form of TV

Student

I am not a fan of the idea of Facebook TV. I believe that Facebook is already successful in its purpose of connecting people around the country and the world. I would more than likely not watch Facebook TV, mainly because of my loyalty to Netflix original programs, as well as the various shows and movies that I am able to stream on the site. I understand that Facebook is trying to look into different ways to reach out to users, but in my opinion, Facebook does not need to change a thing about where they are right now!

Student

I do not think that Facebook TV would be the best idea. Facebook already has wnough content on it and I feel like adding that would be a mistake. They have alot of content that they share as far as videos, pictures, games, music, and sometimes movies as well as other things. It was just add more clutter to the site to me. I wouldnt watch an original Facebook content on my timeline because I dont watch alot of tv and also i just feel like it would not be all that good. It would just be another thing for them to copy off of that other major sites are doing.

Student

I personally like the idea of Facebook creating its own content. It makes content exclusive and draws more users in. That being said, I'm not fond of the concept of full length television shows or something of that nature being on a social media feed. Yes videos are prone to draw attention of Facebook users, but social media is meant for quick check-ins on news, friends, food, whatever you go on for. I don't believe people will pay attention to videos that are longer than even a couple minutes on a Facebook feed and may even turn peope away with an excuse of their feed getting too crowded. I think thwy should stay with short videos and pictures to bring in new Facebook users.

Student

I don't think I would watch Facebook TV, I already do not use Facebook that much and I can't picture myself watching TV on it.  It doesn't seem like it fits with the use of Facebook and the purpose of the website.  But I would be willing to watch it and see how I like it.

Student

I believe Facebook is going in a terrible direction with adding facebook TV. TV had never been a purpose of Facebook and I believe adding now is pretty much pointless. I think Facebook should get back to their original roots and keep on the road that they are headed. I think Facebook need to stop trying to be involve in everything and understand what their purpose is.

Student

I think that Facebook is trying to move too far from its original purpose and would be overdoing it with Facebook TV. I go on Facebook to catch up on the lives of my family and friends. I also like to read interesting articles and see people's personal opinions expressed on FB. It's nice to scroll quickly through my feed. Adding a TV element is just too far out of reach with the purpose of this social media platform. If I wanted to watch a show, I would go to Netflix first and foremost.

Student

I think that in the past year facebook has shifted a lot of its content to videos such as "tasty" videos and other funny videos. It is the number one platform to share things like this (obviously besides youtube), and I think that facebook TV could fit in with the direction that the company has already been heading. Many of my friends do not post on facebook as much anymore so I am more inclined to watch the videos I see while scrolling through my feed, and would be more inclined to watch facebook TV.

Student

In my opinion, one of Facebook's downfalls is all the clutter. Adding a TV dimension on top of short videos, on top of Facebook live on top of original statuses will only add to the already crowded Facebook timeline. While I understand Facebook should stay up to date on trends, this may be a little far-fetched. Facebook is losing their original values and aims by striving to do everything and copying other platforms. This may lead to its eventual stop in usage.

Student

I do not like the idea of Facebook TV.  I understand that these companies and social media sources need to keep up with the times and changing demands of the people, but this is not what Facebook was first shaped up to be.  They are adding so many dimensions now that it seems like they have lost their initial vision.  They have already done so much so fast with the newest updates, one specifically to be talked about is the Live videos.  I think that this is plenty enough to thrive in the market that they are in.

I would stick to the original posts.  The Facebook TV is too much for me in my feed, so I wouldn't even bother.

Student

I don’t personally watch very much TV. I only use Netflix a little bit and hardly ever turn the TV on. I don’t think I would watch original Facebook content but I think others would. Many people I know are addicted to Netflix and all those other platforms like it. Considering all the social media platforms I think people spent the most time on Facebook because there’s so much content compared to the others. I think Facebook TV will work people will just have to get used to it at first.

Student

Facebook TV sounds not that interesting for me. I may only check it out when my friends inviting me to do it since the internet already has so many attraction.

Student

I would watch original Facebook content in my timeline. For me, Facebook TV is not a very good idea because there are many platforms that people can watch TV, such as YouTube, which was fully developed. I think Facebook should focus more on their social media field.
