Consider sharing it with your friends.

Facebook recently recruited Mina Lefevre, MTV's former head of scripted programming. This news is particularly relevant as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously hinted at a short-form programming business strategy similar to Google's YouTube Red.

Original content is growing and profitable landscape with key players like Amazon and Netflix spending a bulk of their revenue in content creation. Considering Facebook's history of copying snapchat, it wouldn't be surprising for them to play the "me too" game.

What do you think of Facebook TV? Would you watch original Facebook content in your timeline?

Comments & Feedback

Student

I would watch original Facebook content in my timeline. For me, Facebook TV is not a very good idea because there are many platforms that people can watch TV, such as YouTube, which was fully developed. I think Facebook should focus more on their social media field.

Student

I agree that Facebook has a history of copying other platforms such as snapchat and now as it seems, Netflix and Amazon. I am a big fan of content creation, especially original Netflix films. Original content on Facebook however does not sound appealing to me. I would not watch Facebook TV because in my mind, platforms such as Netflix and Amazon have completely different purposes than social media apps such as Facebook and snapchat. When I log onto Netflix, I know I have at least an hour to spend on that platform to watch a show. Netflix is reserved for large amounts of free time. When I log onto Facebook, I plan on just swiping through my newsfeed quickly then logging off. Facebook and other social media uses are reserved for on-the-go times such as on the bus, as a distraction while waiting, etc. When I scroll through my social media timelines, I am doing so with the purpose of just being entertained and distracted so I would never stop to watch Facebook TV or Facebook original content on my timeline. The other problem about Facebook original content is that Facebook – and other social media - is usually used for background noise whereas Netflix or Amazon are used with full attention. Facebook original content may be popular among some crowds – the younger generations especially – but I personally wouldn’t be interested in it.

Student

I don’t think Facebook TV is good idea. Because this idea comes too late, everyone prefer to watching video in YouTube. I think Facebook need to focus on social media.

Student

A new Facebook TV trend could go both ways. I could see Facebook producing content that is interesting and original, which could be popular among young viewers who also watch the shows created by Netflix. If Facebook is careful and creative with the content, I could see it being successful. However, Facebook is also a huge platform for the older generations who aren't interested in new shows or content. They just want to use Facebook to connect with family and friends. Facebook TV could cause clutter and an information overload for these older and more classic audiences.

Student

I would check it out while I was bored if it was good content, although to be honest their is already enough media on facebook that its practically its own TV already. They have a ton of short videos on all sorts of topics, and facebook doesnt even need to create it! If facebook starts to do tv it may just add to the noise and turn more people off to the platform.

Student

I think that it would be a good idea but Facebook tv would only be popular for a short period of time. Since there are so many platforms trying to expand in areas where they shouldn't be, I think that this is a perfect example. Facebook should focus on what they are already good at

Student

With so many platforms to watch tv on in this day and age, i dont think i would actively seek out Facebook tv. Everywhere i go i can watch tv and dont really need another way. With so many people already commited to Netflix amog other sites, it seems unlikely that they could get so many people to switch to Facebook tv. Facebook being as popular and successful as it is will surely find a way to make it work, but it seems like they may be a little too late to the game.

Student

It does not surprise me that Facebook wants to create an even bigger empire. I don't think Facebook TV will catch on because that is not what the social media site is for. People have other streaming networks to watch TV and are happy with those. Personally, I like that all the social media's I use are different and unique. They all have their own style and represent a specific vibe. If Facebook starts to offer TV they will lose their brand personality that people use it for and like. They should stick to what they are good at because you shouldn't fix something that isn't broken.

Student

I do not think Facebook TV is a good program. Because I will not use more time to learn how to use it. It is not a neccessary program. There are a lot of Apps to watch. For those people who don't like to use new things, they would like use the products they used for a long time. Also, Facebook TV will need more time to practice. In my opinion, it won't be successful at first time. I barely use facebook. I prefer Instagram, so that i would not watch orignal Facebook content.

Student

In my opinion, the idea seems not bad but it is little late in the market. I know facebook is one of the largest social media in the world but there are many competitiors with the similar program which are considered big company such as Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube. In this case, I think it is not worth to start this program. Also, most of videos in facebook can be found on YouTube so, I think it is pointless. Honestly, I wouldn't watch Facebook TV on my timeline because to me, the fun of facebook is watching short clips or photos during the waitng time or when I'm moving on bus or subway so I don't think I will use it.

Student

In terms of the audience that Facebook has, I deinitely think that there is opportunity for the platform to continue to expand. However, I don't think that people go to Facebook to see long videos or watch full length shows. Also, with the wide range of platforms that are already available to watch full-length videos, TV shows, and movies on, I just think that Facebook is maybe trying to enter into a market that is already getting too crowded. People expect to go to YouTube or Netflix and see longer videos or TV shows, but from what I can see, I think that Facebook is more of a platform for videos not much longer than maybe 10 minutes. Because of this, I definitely think that there is room for growth with Facebook, but maybe Facebook TV is not the way to go.

Student

I am not surprised by the concept of Facebook TV and, as strategy goes, I think that it only makes sense as Facebook's next step. Already, Facebook is a place where so much content is posted and shared that it has an established reputation as a hub for content to be found and viewed. I, for example, fall down the rabbit hole far too often when I click on one shared video and continue to watch the "related" videos that follow until the very end of the video line up. If these videos were Facebook originals, I wouldn't notice a difference as long as they were well-produced, entertaining content and I would continue to watch. I think Facebook getting in on the action is a smart strategy because of this.

Student

I would not watch Facebook TV. Facebook is strictly for social networking purposes and I think the addition of this feature would muddy the waters and make it less enjoyable. If I wanted to be informed of the news, I'd cut on my television.

Student

I do believe the idea of Facebook and believe that it could be successful, but it would have to be under the right cirucumstances. For starters, you already have an available audience considering the number of people who use Facebook and the number of Facebook users that watch videos that are posted to their timeline. However, the reason that Amazon and Netflix have been so successful, and YouTube Red has not, is because they have focused on creating quality content. Amazon and Netflix have put lots of time and money into creating their original content by focusing on generating unique ideas and recruiting talent (producers, directors, actors, etc.) to be invovled in the creation of the original TV shows and movies. YouTube Red has drastically failed in this process because they have focused on trying to promote the stars of their own YouTube platform, who only attract interest from a small niche audience. For example, ask yourself, would you be interested in watching a Netflix original TV show with such high-profile actors as Kevin Costner or would you rather watch a YouTube Red documentary on YouTube star Lily Singh? The answer for the large majority of us is pretty obvious and should be for Facebook TV as well. Putting money, time, and effort into creating quality original content with well-known talent will bring viewers, regardless of the platform.

Student

I think facebook tv is a tryout of face book tried to keep up with the current trend. I would probably stick with youtube red by now because it seems more mature.

Student

Facebook TV sounds interesting, but I think Facebook is coming into the game late. The other platforms have been established far longer and have had too huge of a success for Facebook TV to make an impact. Unless they have features to draw creators in that are better or different, I don't think that the platform will be as success full as say YouTube Red. I think something that might work would be to offer streamings of TV shows live as they happen. That could help promote Facebook Live and make it more of a TV element.

Student

Facebook creating and releasing FacebookTv during a time that a mass production that has been antiquated for quite some time seems absurd. It seems that Facebook is trying to keep its glory by finding anything to get them any from of popularity. Competing with such companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and AppleTv will not benefit Facebook. Facebook’s users seem to disagree with any new updates added to Facebook and don’t seem very fond of its new TV idea. Personally I don’t think it will be very successful.

Student

Purely out of convience I would watch content on Facebook. I already spend more time than I should watching recipie videos that I have no intention of actually making. I go on facebook because I don't think I have anything better to do, so if they given me more entertainment I would probably watch it.

Student

It depends on the kind of content Facebook creates. Netflix has been fairly successful in creating popular shows that are edgy and relevant to today. Netflix has also had success is creating spinoffs of Full House and A series of Unfortunate Events. I think it would be too risky for Facebook to embark in this field because it already has multiple strong competitors. However, if they were persistent on creating Facebook TV, I would recommend creating several spinoffs which have proven to be popular amongst the nostalgic "nineties kids."

Student

I think that Facebook TV is a cool idea. It is definitely an interesting concept, but unfortunately I think that they are too late with it. They would have a multitude of competitors before they even launch and I think that guarentees a failure. Facebook is successful as is. In my opinion, they should keep things going how they are. I would watch original Facebook content on my timeline just to see what it is like, but I don't see myself keeping up with it.

Student

The idea of Facebook TV is pretty neat, but I do not think it will be successful. Although Facebook is one of the largest social media platforms, I think that's what they need to stick to, social media. They're starting to spread themselves thin trying to do EVERYTHING. They will never be a "Netflix" or "Hulu", so they should focus on another route, whatever that may be. Personally, I wouldn't think twice about watching Facebook TV, I have Netflix and HBO Go - which I don't believe I would ever stray from using. Facebook TV just doesn't sound like it would be that much better, if at all.

Student

It seems like facebook is is very late to this game. With competitors such as Amazon, Hulu, Youtube and Netflix it seems unnecessary for facebook to start this. I do not use facebook but it appears to me as if they're trying to do everything. I think pursuing this is putting them at a high risk of losing out to the countless stronger competitors.

Student

While I do like Facebook and believe that they have been one of the most successful social media platform, I'm not sure that this is the best idea for Facebook. Facebook does not currently create its own content for itself that others know about or necessarily have access to. As a platform specifically created for user-generated content only, I think that it should remain this way.

Student

While I do think Facebook TV sounds like a cool idea, I don't necessarily think it will work for them. WHen YouTube RED first launched, I heard quite a lot about it, but the hype seemed to die down after awhile. I don't think the level of quality is quite up there with actual streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. I also think that Facebook is a bit late to the video-streaming party, as it seems like they are just grasping for anything that they can join in on at this point.

Student

Personally I do not have Facebook, but I do understand how it works and I am unsure how they would be able to create something greater or more unique than video sites that are already out there. Facebook is somewhat a conglomerate of Instagram and Twitter and is also owned by Facebook as well, however, what type of video content, "tv" content can Facebook create that is not already dominated by Hulu, Youtube or Netflix. Therefore the only sucess that I see generating from Facebook tv is because it will be instantly incorporated to the already popular social media site, not because it generates popularity for its uniqueness.

Student

Depending on the credibility of the creators and the substance with each TV show, I would be willing to consider watching the programs. If they had credible actors, directors, and writers for some of their prgrams, it would seem obtuse to think that I wouldn't watch any of them. I currently am subscribed to Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go and don't think that I would be opposed to adding another if I saw the content was legit and interesting. I love TV and documentaries and movies altogether, so I do believe I would be interested if the content was valueable and worth it.

Student

I think that this is a cool idea, but I think that there are too many other websites that offer TV shows and movies.  Amazon has TV now, but I don't think it's widely used.  Apps like Hulu, Netflix, and HBO are the main sources to stream and have access to videos.  I probably wouldn't watch Facebook content, however.  I use Facebook to see what the people I know are up to, not to watch videos they choose to produce.

Student

This sounds like a neat idea, but they are a little late to the game. If they choose to go through with Facebook TV they are going to have some serious competition and i'm not sure they are up to compete against platforms like Netflix or Amazon.

Student

I have already invested my time and money watching shows on other platforms but I wouldn't be completely opposed to it, if it was free and just popped up on my timeline. The TV/original content is an extremely saturated market so as great as the idea might be I don't think it is a smart business move. They would have to think about the investments and outcomes and how that would match up with their competitors. But, as you said above, Facebook should try to work towards material that is original and not play the copy cat game.

Student

I think Facebook TV is a great idea, however a few years too late. There are already so many programs similar to this and I dont see poeple leaving the sites they have been loyal too such as Netflix, Amazon or even YouTube Red for Facebook TV. It is a good idea and I am sure they would get many viewers, however I think they should take this idea, put a spin on it and make it different from everything else. I think they need to get out of the copying phase and find some originality.

Student

Although Facebook TV is a great idea, I think they are entering into a field with too many key players, like Netflix and Amazon TV. These companies dominate the market and they specialize in what they do. For me, Facebook will always be a form of social media and nothing more. They run the risk of putting billions of dollars into something that has a small chance of beating out their competition.

Student

I think Facebook TV would be entering an already over saturated market. Younger generations who are the main audiences for these short form television programs are already loyal to platforms like YouTube Red and other similar platforms. I think if Facebook were to go ahead with TV programming they should focus on targeting the market they already have rather than trying to convince users of other platforms to convert. I personally would not be interested in Facebook TV programming, in part because I rarely utilize the programs already on the market, and also because I rarely use Facebook in general. Ultimately, I understand Facebook would like to keep up with the times and keep evolving, but I think they should leave short-form programming to the other players who are already doing it very well.

Student

Althought I do think that Facebook TV is a great idea, I don't think that it should be able to have it's own channel/it's own station. There isn't a chance that Facebook TV would be able to compete with other channels on TV, espiecally because there wouldn't be enough new consistent information through Facebook that could be covered throughout a full 24 hours. Facebook TV although, should lean more towards having it's own stream station like Netflix or Hulu. If this would be the case, then everyday people would have certain categories to choose from, that are similar to the topics that they follow on Facebook. It would be set up by choosing what topic you want to hear about, click on that topic, and then the Facebook TV provides all information about what is currently going on in that's topic's world today.

Student

Facebook TV is great idea for me, Facebook has many users, also Facebook is biggest social meida platform in the world. Facebook TV can bring more intersting content to the audience. let people enjoy the show or video. Everyonw have smart phone right now, it is very convenience for people, you can watching your TV show on Facebook TV in everywhere.

Student

I think I would be interested in watching the Facebook TV. I spend a lot of time watching videos on Facebook so I think it will be very interesting to see those videos on TV. Facebook already has a variety of ages using Facebook so it will be easy for Facebook to get the user's attention toward the Facebook TV.

Student

I think Facebook TV is an awesome idea. Facebook has so many users of all different ages and demographic groups which will make Facebook TV hugely successful. I believe that having a Facebook "News channel" would be a huge hit. Many college students, like myself, spend a lot of time on Facebook and having a live news channel on Facebook would be an easy way to help keep students, and the general public updated and educated on current news. I am uncertain that Facebook would be able to create original content for Facebook TV that would be able to compete with Netflix, HBO, and Hulu+, but I would be willing to give Facebook TV a shot.

Student

I think Facebook TV is a great idea. Since Facebook has so many users, I think that Facebook TV would do really well. My only concern is that a lot people that use Facebook, like me, go on to just scroll through their timeline to pass time, they don't really look at every single post or video. Because of that, I don't think that people would use Facebook TV very often. Personally, I would much rather prefer to use Netflix, especially because they have their own TV shows.

Student

Facebook is all original content, for the most part. I think Facebook TV could be a really great idea to advance the company. The only thing they would need for it to take off is really "good" content like how Netflix has shows such as "Orange is the New Black" and "Stranger Things."

Student

I think it is a good idea of Facebook, there have a large amount of people are using Facebook, so there have a large amount audience. The profit will be huge if the Facebook TV establish. To be honest, I prefer to watch YouTube, and I used to watch YouTube. The Facebook TV can be a competitor but not owner of the TV market.

Student

I think this is a great idea by Facebook! With over a billion users on Facebook, they already have a the biggest user base out of all social media platforms. I really enjoy watching Amazon's and Netflix's original content and I am sure Facebook's will be right up there as well. The only problem I see with this is that when I scroll through my Facebook, I don't see myself watching a long episode or movie right that second. I think they should advertise their original content on the timeline and then stream it on a different page. Overall, I believe this can be a big success for Facebook if they do it right.

Student

I am interested in Facebook TV. I think it would do ok but I doubt I would love the content they would create. Facebook has always been sort of tacky in my eyes so I would assume their content would have the same feel. Id need something to wow me.

Student

Due to Facebook having a larger number of users, I think Facebook Tv will be popular. Facebook has lots of revenue they are able to spend a wide variety on original content. Amazon and Netflix are already extremely successful and it will be interesting to see if Facebook drives them to become even better.

Student

Base on the number of user of Facebook. I think Facebook TV will be popular soon. I am really interesting in this idea by facebook and if we can directly recommend TV shows to our friends or discuss below the shows that will be great just like watching TV with our friends face to face

Student

I think Facebook TV could become a competitor in this market. Because of the huge user base that Facebook already has reaching over a billion people, I could see how this could be a good idea for Facebook. They have the reveune to spend a wide variety on original content. I would be very interested to see what they will come up with creating content for its users.

Student

I personally interesed in Facebook TV. As from now, Facebook has been approaching various partners to form a well-known social platform. Although Facebook has the history of copying snapchat, this past experience witnessed the development of Facebook. Facebook keeps growing in order to explore more digital media area. I would like to say I support it. Also I do agree that Netflix and Amazon are successful examples here. However, Facebook still has the chance to do better. Everything is possible.

Student
Depends on what kinds of contents they can come up with. Because it is important have their own powerful contents. For instance, Amazon prime- The Grand Tour and Netflix - House of cards. In addition, price matter. I know many people include me doesn't want to spend additional money in subscribe. Since Facebook already has many users, it's hard to fail, but as long as they come up with great contents with reasonable price, they have a chance to be a leader in the streaming industry.
Student

I think Facebook is a great social media in area of school. People can find each other quickly by school or working location. If Facebook want to get TV market that is hardly now. There is lots of TV brand in stable TV market. Facebook should focus on how to communication conveniently in life I guess.

Student

Now that I know Facebook is coming out with their own TV streaming, I'm kind of surprised it took them this long. They seemed to copy snapchat fairly soon, and Netflix and Amazon TV have been around for so long now. I might be skepital about their original shows at first, but if they get good reviews I would probably watch them. Netflix has come out with some amazing Netflix original series and I believe facebook is cabale of doing the same. It would also be convenient to have your social media and favorite TV shows all on one platform.

Student

If Facebook offered new TV content, I would absolutely watch it. I enjoy channels such as Netflix and Amazon, so if Facebook created similar content, I would be interested. I don't believe a social media platform should be bounded by one use. Times are changing and people are becoming cord cutters, watching TV whenever they want on their laptops and computers. This is the time Facebook should jump on this train.

Student

I believe that Facebook's future lays in its ability to become a multinetwork news provider. With the advent of Facebook Live, established news brands such as; The New York Times, CNN, The Atlantic, etc.  can post raw video content in real time. I think a monetary structure will be set up for this eventually, and I believe that entertainement content would take away from this credibility.
