Instagram has been around for years but is just now seeing a dramatic increase in time spent on the platform. Instagram currently has over 300 million users with over 75 million active users daily. We're seeing a trend where time spent on Facebook is declining and time spent on Instagram is increasing.

When these trends emerge, experts often speculate the cause. Some feel that Facebook's decline is largely in part to the growing adult demographic. Others claim Facebook has been "cool" for too long and it's simply gone out of fashion.

Whats your personal experience with the two platforms? Do you use them both? If so, which do you use more often? Why do you think that Instagram is growing in popularity?

I actually only use Instagram these days. I never loved Facebook and one day I got rid of it completely. Facebook has too much on it and I simply and am not concrned what is really going on on peoples lives. I think Facebook is outdated and Instagram is the new and cool thing. I think that Instagram popularity has grown more and more everyday. I think Instagram is cool because you don't have to view peoples lives in depth its just one simple picture vs. captiosns and picrures.

Student

Personally, I prefer like to use the instagram. Nowadays more and more people like the simple life and they want to find the cool picture and different feel. You can fellow what you like and what attractive for you, so the instagram is a perfect app for people. And that why Instagram is growing in popularity.

Student

For me, I use Instagram and Facebook both, but I prefer to Instagram than Facebook. I am not fan of facebook it just sometimes I boring would login, Contrast I use Instagram a lot, This was simple one and it was easy to see people's life and the stars' normal life who I loved to see. And as we know Facebook was more tranditional social media, people would like fellow the new things.

Student

I am using both Facebook and Instagram. I prefer Instagram than Facebook. Facebook is traditional platform, and since Facebook has designed for so long, users start to look for new platform. Instagram is much more fun to use than Instagram, it's easy and have more young adult users than Facebook.

Student

Personally, I have never been a fan of facebook. I only have Facebook for various group chats/groups, everyone has a Facebook, and easy communication with anyone including those who are close and people you have not seen in years. Overall, I will not delete my Facebook but it is not a platform that I will use everyday and not even months.

However, Instagram is a platform that I use on a weekly basis. I enjoy the concept of sharing photos/videos in your own way. Being able to express yourself within a more artistic platform has always been interesting (I.E Tumblr). Additionally, I enjoy visuals much more than text, hence why my favorite platform is Snapchat and not Facebook. Because many people enjoy expressing themselves and having visual stimulus, Instragram has continued to grow in popularity due to these key features.

Overall, I use both platforms but sway more toward Instagram. Instragram has a unique way of allowing its users to express themselves in a friendly and simplistic atmosphere!

Student

I feel that Instagram was introduced exactly at a time when social media users were becoming bored with traditional platforms. Around the time I discovered Instagram, I remember thinking that Facebook and MySpace had become stale and obsolete. The most appealing aspect of the app was that it focused on visual media, rather than text and status updates, etc. I was tired of reading negative tweets and comments, and felt like I finally found a network with more substance. I joined at a time when most of the users were professional photographers because I wanted to see cool, high-quality photos for my own enjoyment. Since then I have really seen the app penetrate the advertising sector.

I do use both social media and I thnk Ins is easier to usu and heavily on images

and my question will be   do you think facebook will  be replaed with Ins oneday ?///

Student

Personally, I use both Facebook and Instagram.

For Instagram, I use it for more simple and concise pictures.

When I want to know how other people, I only scroll down to see their pictures.

This is the point of the Instagram, and it is really simple and useful.

Student

I personally only have a facebook of the two but I never use it. The reason I dont have a Instagram is because I never take pictures of anything really and I feel it is more of a female demographic for that site. The reason I dont use Facebook anymore is because of what you said above. I thought it was fun to keep updated on friends but as soon as my grandparents got on, there it went for me. The same thing is starting to happen slowely with Twitter. Its only a matter of time until both sites are a thing of the past.

Student

In my case, i don't use instagram, i only use facebook because i do not really take many pictures. I think that instagram is growing because people prefer to see pictures instead of reading some kind of personal story.

Student

We see trends within the realm of social media very frequently, much like a product life cycle. Cites like Myspace and Friendster were quick to mature and decline. I believe facebook is trending in the same direction, but at a much slower rate. With lots of features being altered both on desktop and mobile versions of the social network,  it is slowing down the maturation of the platform and keeping it relevant to many different kinds of social media users. I expect Instagram to continue its user growth however, I expect a quicker maturation than facebook unless new features are added to the platform.

Student

I use both Facebook and Instagram and I think my spending time on facebook does not really decrease. They both have their own style to run it. I know that recently Facebook has change their style to upload any fun video so people could share things. Some poeple would like the new facebook style because it will be fun watching it over time. I also like the instagram but since faebook is more focused on communicating with people unlike instagram I like it more. In my opinion, instagram is rising because it is unusual than existing media network.

Student

I have an account with both, I don't, however, use either very often. I am just not a very sociable person on social media, I would rather not have everyone on my friends list, many of who are simply people I know, know everything about me. I would rather tell the people I want to know in public. I do visit Facebook more often because I see more activity on it than Instagram. I feel like instagram is growing in popularity because of similar reasons Facebook grew, because it allows you to share fun content with you friends and see what they are sharing, and once all of your friends have one, you almost fell obligated to get one.

Student

I personally have an account with both platforms, but I use Instagram more often. I do agree with you when you say that Facebook's decline is due to the growing adult demographic on there. Most of the people my age that I talk to say that Facebook is for, "old people". Instagram is more fresh and appeals to the younger generations. Uploading pictures and writing short captions to go along with them is a much easier way to be connected with the digital world and doesn't require a lot of energy like Facebook does. Instagram is much simple, which younger generations also love. I only really use Facebook when I'm bored or when I have a group project in a class and we decide to use Facebook as the main communication source. I do express myself more through my Instagram because I feel as though I don't have to be as "professional" as I am on Facebook. I do overall think that Instagram is growing in popularity and will continue to.

Student

I do have a Facebook page but the lst time I really used it for personal enjoyment had to be the start of college. At most Facebook is a way I can contact my friends or members of a team for group projects. Mostly (at times of extreme boredom) I wil go on Facebook and simply scroll down until something catches my eye. I hardly ever read posts and videos or pictures are all I really stop to look at. As for Instagram I only have an account because of the first assignment, but knwoing how the site and app functions, I can defintely tell why it is gaining popularity. It's perfect for scrolling through and seeing cool pictures or videos of friends rather than annoying posts from people you knew a lifetime ago. All in all, I think the decrease in Facebook activity and the increase on Instagram has a little to do with both of the viewpoints mentioned above.

Student

I have accounts on both of these social media sites, but I only really use facebook.  One of the reasons behind this is I don't take many pictures.  I think it could be growing more in popularity because poeple like seeing pictures more than they like read peoples posts.  I think pictures are fun and are almost an experiance, where facebook is getting crowded with ads.

Student

I have decreased my usage of Facebook dramatically in the past year. I believe it is due to a combination of it being less 'cool', and from the content being diluted by individuals on my 'friends' list that I neither talk to, or care for. I am not currently on Instagram, but I can definitely see the rationale behind kids my age and younger becoming more drawn to it. Back when I was more active on Facebook, I noticed that the main things kids used it for were sharing statuses, and sharing pictures. With the emergence of Twitter and Instagram, both of those 2 major uses of Facebook are being taken over by these 2 'cooler' social media platforms, and Facebook is becoming less practical.

I believe that one of the main reasons Instagram is becoming so popular is the idea that users don't see it as a place to 'dump' all of their photos (like Facebook is/was) but instead as a place where they post the best picture that they took during a night out, or at an event, to sum up their whole experience on that day. In that sense, there is a lot more pride that goes into someone's Instagram account (especially girls), and they care much more about what photos are posted on that site, than Facebook.

Student

I am not on instagram, but I can see why it has become so popular. People want their social media to be simple and easy to use. Platforms like twitter that sacrifice depth for convienance have become huge in recent years. Facebook has evolved far past its basic beginings. Now a days, FB timelines are so spammed with a variety of content, much of it that the user could care less about it, and makes it a pain to use. The other reason why I believe that FB has begun to lag behind is the relevant lack of privacy that FB has. Twitter, as well as instagram, is still new enough that they do not have a big adult populations, something the younger generation appreciates.

Student

I think you hit the nail on the head with there being a smaller adult population on Twitter and Instagram. That's definitely a huge part of why younger generations favor those social media over things like Facebook. Obviously there are other factors as well, but I think that younger generations have a tendency, almost like a natural instinct, to rebel against older generations. When they all started invading Facebook, younger users picked up and left, heading over to social media like snapchat, twitter, and instagram. They still have their Facebook accounts, but they're now used for family friendly content. The age diversification of social media really changed the game.

Student
I have both an Instagram and a Facebook. I can admit that I do post something on my Instagram that I wouldn't necessarily post on Facebook because and increasing number of my older family members are on Facebook, and I know that whatever I post will somehow makes its way back to my mom and I end up in trouble. I don't think that I use one more than the other. I check both pretty frequently but I do not make very many post. It's like I feel the need to be connected and keep up with what everyone else post and what they are up to, but I don't want the same for me. I don't like people knowing my every move and I feel like that what all social media has ultimately come to.
Student

I'm one of the select few who still are not on Instagram, but am on Facebook. I joined Facebook several years ago as all my friends did, as well. Back then I joined because everyone was and it was something to look at. Today, I really only check Facebook to see if there are any events going on or I am just that bored.

The only reason I still don’t have an Instagram is because I know I will become addicted to it. Social media is great, but having a job, taking classes, staying fit and still wanting the time to go out with friends does not allow me to be checking my Instagram account every time I write a sentence. I think Facebook is dying because it is just old news and is really just too much to handle on one platform. I think instagram is growing because people don't have to put any effort into it. You just look at a picture, like it or don't like it, and then scroll to the next.

Student

I think that Facebook and Instagram are both great apps. I use them both. I probably use facebook more just for events and groups and birthdays. It keeps everything together in one area. Instagram is usually just if I am feeling lazy and want something to do when I am bored. I think that Facebook has amped up their game a little bit in the past year or so. I was never on it except for MSU groups that I had to know what was going on. Now I go on regularly to see which videos are shared by friends and then I often click on reccomended clips. I think that Instagram is growing in populairty because peoples attention spans have been getting shorter and shorter. Instagram is a photo, and then if you want to read more you can or you skip it and keep scrolling. Depends on the mood one is in.

Student

I personaly use both site several times a day. I post a lot of pictures and share them on facebook as well. just to comunicate with my freinds on facebook that are not on instagram. I like both sites and use them everyday.

Student

I personally experience using both platforms, I use both platforms equally. Actually I think people who have Instagram account, also use Facebook in their lives. I don't think that Facebook is going to fade out while Instagram is growing in popularity, because these two platforms are different and have different functions right now. Instagram is easy to use and is used for sharing pictures to others. And Facebook is more completed as a social media tool. I nowadays use Facebook to chat with my classmates as a team and create groups to finish projects.

Student

I didn't really use instagram until 2 years ago. But as time as gone on it just seems like Facebook is just becoming instagram. People don't post statuses as much as they used to and it's pretty much just pictures. I think instagram is growing in popularity because it's simple to use and you can view a lot of pictures in a short amount of time, it's more artsy because you can edit your pictures before you post, and of course, less parents use it.

Student

I do use both FaceBook and Instagram and like many others I feel as Facebook is getting worse instagram is getting better. I think Instagram is growing in popularity over Facebook for the reasons metioned above. Facebook has my parents and grandparents where instagram i am better able to express myself.

Student
I remember when Facebook first started and Myspace started to lose it's allure. I believe that the same situation is happening with Facebook and Instagram but luckily for Facebook not quite as intense. I like most others was a heavy Facebook user when it came out, but found my interest qwuickly faded and didn't post nearly as much content as I had before around 2010. Friending on Facebook became almost a social norm and it just became less intriguing when so many family membersm friend's parents, and basically anyone that wasn't my age but I felt like I had to accept was now able to view my account. Instagram on the other hand, I really enjoy. It is much easier to find and follow others based on one's interests. Also, there is much less clutter on Instagram and takes out a lot of the sifting through posts one has to do on Facebook. I think Instagram is growing in popularity because it's newer than Facebook, which as we have seen in social media apps is generally an advantage with reaching to the younger audiences. I also think Instagram gives youth more privacy, as the pictures that you like only appear on the newsfeed for a very short period of time. The use of hashtags have made it easier to build up accounts and draw attention to specific posts based on a persons interest which I think has also helped them grow, as when people feel like something is customizable to their own needs, it draws them in.
Student

I personally have both an Instagram and Facebook account. I created a facebook back in 8th grade so I could connect with friends. I created an instagram account during high school and did not use it a lot right away, but over the past two year use it everyday and check it multiple times, whereas with facebook I tend to only check it when I get a notification or I am bored and have nothing else to look at online.  I use facebook when I need to message someone that I do not have their cell phone number and need to contact them about something, or I will read and repost articles that I find interesting. I personally like instagram better because pictures draw my attention more and I have always been a fan of photography. I can scroll through instagram quick and easily and the platform is simple and easy to use. Instagram is used by most all people in my generation and it is the best way to stay connected and see what people are doing, where they are going, and what their interests are. People tend to update their instagram more than their facebook in todays world, so I feel instagram to be more relevant. I think instagram is growing more because people like to show what they are doing through picutures and videos. This site/app is very simple to use, whereas facebook has so many features, pictures is just one of them, and nstagram focuses on that alone. Snap a picture of you and your friends at the beach, add a filter, a caption, and try to get as many likes as possbile. Thats the goal of instagram users out there today. Becoming popular and known and staying connected with your peers.

Student

I personally agree completely with the idea that Facebook is fading out and becoming gradually less popular. I personally like Instagram better because I take alot of pictures. I used to be equally on both websites, but lately Facebook feels like one big advertisement. Ad's for shopping, craig's list like websites, and viral articles just seem like a bunch of clutter to me. I also agree with the students who posted below me on the privacy issue. I find it very annoying and invasive when a friend of a friend of a friend sees what posts I like and what I share. Who am I connected and sharing stuff with now? Everyone? Instagram is the winner by far for me, more personal, more private, more fun. Plus, being able to see all my favorite celebrities personal Instagram pictures is pretty interesting too.

Student

My personal experience with the two platforms If that I use both equally. I used to be on Facebook a lot more but that was because Facebook was really the only thing out there. Intagram and Twitter slowly worked their way above Facebook and having a new platform to connect I noticed myself taking all my time on Facebook and then using some of that time of Instagram. I think I use Facebook more. I am not really one to have the time to use social media all day and when I do I like to look and be updated about the people I care most about. A lot of my family is on Facebook so I love to login and see pictures of my niece. None of my family has Instagram so I do notice myself using Facebook more for just that reason.

I think instagram is growing in popularity just for that reason. Teenagers and Young adults’ love that social media can connect them away from their family seeing anything. Also, I think the biggest reason Instagram is growing in popularity is because it doesn’t have ads filling the feed, its just photos with a short caption and it has video and/or flipgrams. Instagram is short and to the point. A picture is worth a 1000 words and I think Intagram fully has developed for just that reason.

Student

Facebook was the most popular social media platform for a long time, but the users seemed to transfer from Facebook to Instagram. I am one of the transfered users. For me, the main reason is that Instagram has more privacy than Facebook. Facebook are tended to connect my friends to other's friend which is the mutual friends. It narrows down the distance of people, yet decreases the privacy. When one was tagged in a picture or post, it will showed up in that person's news feed. All of the person's friends will see the picture and post. However, Instagram will block other users if they are not accepted to follow. Therefore, Instagram has been my favorite social media platform recently.

Student

In my opinion, the reason instagram grows so fast is about one word "privacy". Facebook almost record everything you've done on your account. For instance, if you like a picuture, the activity will show up on newsfeed.I am using both facebook and instagram but I believe i spend more time on facebook. Facebook contains many articles, news , videos and images so i can spend more time on it. Instagram basically contains images and short clips only therefore i probably don't have enough materials to go through.

Student

Even thought Facebook is still a number one social network today, a global survey indicates that Instagram continues to grow faster than all other social networks includes Facebook. It’s true that most of my friends started to tell me that they are using Instagram more than Facebook recently. To be more specific, most of them use both Instagram and Facebook, but they now post things on Insagram only. Personally, I have accounts for both social networks and I do use them sometimes, however, I still only post things on Facebook even though I do not post things on it very frequently like I used to. In my opinion, I don’t think there is any different between these two apps. Some people tell me that they use Instagram more than Facebook now because it’s more private and it has more hot girls pictures on it, however, I think people are just sick of Facebook and follow the trend.

Student

I think that this topic is very interesting because when I was younger I liked Facebook more and now that I'm older I like Instagram more, but I think I know the reason why.  Exclusivity.  People like exclusive things and as much as Facebook is and always will be better, Instagram is cooler and more hip.  You can't post a picture of yourself drunk or high on Facebook because an employer might see it, but on Instagram it's almost encouraged and makes you seem more artsy and with it.  I can see myself being on Facebook forever, but I think Instagram is fad that as soon as the cooler thing comes around they'll just switch to it.

Student

I have experience using both platforms, I have accounts on both Facebook and Instagram. I would say that I use both platforms frequetly and I am on both platforms multiple times a day. However, I would say that I use Facebook more than Instagram. Intagram is only people sharing pictures and videos (mostly pictures) this makes it very easy to scroll down and see all the new pictures that have been posted. I am also following far less people on Instagram then I am friends with on Facebook, this means that I have less people to see post on the Instagram than I do on Facebook. Facebook also has much more news outlets and information being posted on it so it takes much longer to go through all of the links that I see while scrolling down my Facebook timeline. I think that Instagram is growing in popularity because people really enjoy using and viewing artsy photos along with changing filters on pictures to see different things that people are up to in a cool new way.

Student

I have both a Facebook and an Instagram account that I spend time on daily. I'd say that I still spend more time on Facebook than Instagram.  Though I would say that I enjoy Instagram more than Facebook.  I think Instagram is growing in popularity because it is a lot easier to use and quicker to view posts than Facebook.

I also think that it is far superior than Facebook when it comes to following and interacting with celebrities.  Facebook accounts for celebrities don't typically seem personal or like the celebrity is actually making the posts. While on Instagram you feel like you are getting an inside look on what a celebrity's life really looks like.

I've been on Facebook since 2006 or 2007.  I would agree that is has gone out of fashion to some extent but it is still very valuable for connecting to family, friends, and other valuable connections.  A place I think it is more useful than Instagram is in the private messaging.  I think Instagram tried to set up a private messaging but with pictures.  I don't think this has been successful because of people already using Snapchat as a way to do photo messaging.

While Instagram is growing, I don't think that Facebook is going to fade out anytime soon.

Student

I have both Facebook and Instagram account. I didn't have a Facebook account until I began my study in United States because I cannot get access to Facebook in my home country. Maybe because it is new for me, I still find it "cool" and useful under many circumstances. I don't really care about if it is already considered as social media for parents. I am still getting a lot of good information about my friends and groups on this platform. And the fact shows that not so many people abandon Facebook totally. I never miss a update of my friends. I don't see me block Facebook out of my life in short time because I am used to browse it in daily base. On the other hand, Instagram is the a social media that I started to use in my junior year in college. I only use it to check the status of celebrities. I can't really remember the last time I logged in. I must admit that the picture and video viewing and sharing is a totally trend in social media and people clearly think this way is cutter. This kind of media can tell a lot in one shoot and make information even more interesting. I think there are still spaces for Instagram to grow.

Student

Personally, I have both a Facebook account and a Instagram account. I have to say I use Facebook more and longer period than Instagram. I check out Facebook every two or three hours a day. I am more comfortable with the platform of Facebook than Instagram. It is more convenient for me to look though friends’ Facebook or manage my own Facebook on computer. I know we can use Instagram on computer as well, but it feels different to me. I only check out Instagram when I am outside without my laptop around. I love posting pictures or videos on Instagram, but it crashes too often. This is one reason why I don’t use Instagram a lot. Why Instagram is growing in popularity is because it is easier to search someone’s account and like his/hers post. The hashtag that people tag along with the picture makes it easier for people to look for. Also lots of celebrities have been using Instagram actively these days. I am not surprised to see that Instagram is growing.

Student

I use both Facebook and Instagram actively. I have had a Facebook profile since 6th grade (yes, I lied about my age to get one) and got an Instagram account my freshman year of college. I post on my own photos on Instagram once a week. On Facebook, I share posts of what's going on in the Columbus Community and keep in touch with friends. I use Facebook more because it is one of my main communication lines for the pages I manage and groups I am in. Instagram is growning in popularity because of it's simplicity. Most of my friends use Facebook to upload pictures of memorable moments in their life, and Instagram is a quicker way to share that information and gain a bigger following/likes. There is not as much personal information that is attached to Instagram, so I don't feel like I broadcasting my life story (i.e.: relationship status or political views) and my parents don't want to create a profile to spy on me.

Student

I personally have both a Facebook account and an Instagram account. I don't consider myself a daily user of Instagram by any means. I might check it out every so often once I have exhausted all my other social meda profiles to check on my phone when im bored. I do believe that Facebook is a entirely different beast all together when compared with Instagram. Facebook is more of a site that is akin to LinkedIn(they are still completely different) whereas Instagram is a more fun site that I would compare along side with a platform like Twitter. So, do I use them both? Yes. Do I use them for completely different purposes? Yes. Without a doubt I use Facebook more often. I treat the site like a the news. I will check it once a day probably in the morning. Fcebook you can also create a much more custom profile with work, education, current city, stuff like that. Instagram is more or less a collection of pictures that may or may not capture what you are all about.  I think that Instagram is on the rise due to younger and younger kids getting social media accounts to connect with their friends on. It's kind of like Vine where the entire user base was(as it seemed) was 18 and younger. So, my final answer? Instagram is becoming more popular for the younger audience and also probably people who are getting bored of their current social media options and want a refreshing change of pace.

Student

Before working in social media I use to be much more active on both Facebook and Instagram. Something about doing it as a job has turned me off from using them personally as much.

I do, though, still maintain both user accounts. I'm more likely to browse Facebook and post something occassionally on that platform than Instagram, however. This is mostly because I don't feel as comfortable with Instagram as I do Facebook.

The other thing that has drawn me away from using both platforms is wanting to be more present and experience the world around me. So I engage less online. This doesn't mean that I don't understand the benefits of social media or how it works in the marketing world. On the contrary, I see it's purpose quite clearly, and I think Instagram is growing because a younger population is increasingly using it to share media that is timely and relevant to them, much in the same ways that busnesses are. Busnesses have learned to harness the power of Instagram, doing Instagram fash sales and targeting the younger generation that is using the platform.

There are many factors that play into why platforms rise and fall, so I don't think we can attribute Instagram's growth to just one single thing. It's definitely interesting, though, to study how the surge in use of various social media plaform waxes and wanes.

Student

I have had both of them for a while now, Facebook being the first platform right after it was accesible to anyone besides college kids. I would say I use them about the same amount, but I do prefer one over the other. I myself think that Facebook is getting out of control with the promotions, people pouring out every detail of their lives /emotions in posts, and the amount of fake people on their scamming other people. It used to be a great platform to keep in touch with friends and family from around the globe. The fact that you can talk to them and share videos, pictures and even recipies is an amazing way to keep connected. It is sad to see it get out of control by going beyond that communication and getting dangerous even. I love Instagram because it simply is just pictures with few thoughts. I can still follow fitness pages, travel, my friends and even food pages. It creates a much more simple way of keeping in touch and you still can add new friends plus I am really into photography and visually seeing what other people are enjoying. Now that you cna take a quick video also enhances the expirience. I think people are just srating to stray away from Facebook drama and possible danger and moving on to the simple, fun and creative way to share moments with friends and family.

Student

I believe the reason for the decline in Facebook use is due to the complexity of it. Facebook is a combination of many different social media sites, and when sites like Twitter and Instagram emerged they made Facebook look cluttered and disorganized. Facebook also has a tendancy to implicate major updates that usually frusterate users due to their inconsistencies. There seems to be just too much information in different contexts, where Twitter is all status updates and Instagram is all photos.

The current trend in retail and many other industries is downsizing because the more complex sites and stores tend to have more area that is exposed for mistakes. Instagram is a great site because it is limited to strictly pictures any nothing else. You rarely find obnoxious promotions popping up and you can follow everything that you would like to see photos of. It is getting increasingly popular especially for people in the art industry to showcase photographs. Even many retail stores will post photos of new arrivals to engage followers and inform them.

I personally use Facebook and Instagram, but I only use Facebook for family connections and Greek Life. Both groups tend to have a high presence on Facebook because of the many different functions on Facebook such as groups, photos, events, etc. Instagram is probably my favorite form of social media primarily because I am a visual person. I like looking at pictures and bright colors, and also what my friends are up too. Instagram makes me feel like I'm there whereas Facebook is a cluttered mix of applications.

Student

I think that Facebook is declining in popularity partly because people are realizing how dangerous it can be to post so much personal information online. I know since I have started realizing that I will be joining the work force I have really started restricting my Facebook posting and what can be seen on my profile. I am very conscious about what others can see. In addition to that, Facebook has changed so dramatically.

For example, the formatting, the trending and all of the suggestions, they are all new and changing parts of Facebook and I find it all overwhelming. I think Facebook is trying to be too many things and it is spreading itself too thin.

As for Instagram, I think it has found a good segment to latch onto. People love to share photos, because if you do not share a photo, did it really happen? No. It adds a photo editing filter element that no one can resist and I think they have kept it clean and simple and that is something that helps them.

Personally, I love that Instagram is one thing and is just expanding on that one element, it is not trying to be five different things. It is what it is and it is great and working for them.

Student

These are two of my favorite platforms.

Although Facebook is used by my mother, father, uncles, aunts, and just about anyone that wants to know everything about me, I still enjoy using it. I love connecting with those people, I primarily use it for photo sharing, and to remember people's birthdays. I think that it is a great platform to be able to catch up on local news.

Instagram is a great platform, and it has great user engagement. Rarely do I go on Instgram and see things I don't care to see. I follow about 200 people in Instagram and roughly 200 people follow me. I enjoy is more than Facebook because it doesn't take as long to get through, and the age demographic is a lot younger. I love following people my age, and I love seeing pictures. I think I've become so accustomed with seeing images on my timeline that just text can often put me to sleep.

Overall, they are two very different platforms and I engage with them in different ways. Although I am professional on both platforms I'd have to say that Instagram definitely holds my better material. This is due to the fact that it's still cool, that your parents aren't on it yet. I hate to give an answer that's so black and white but I don't follow adults on Instagram and if they took it over like Facebook then I'd find another platform to share my photo and video.

Instagram is my platform of choice between the two. Sure there isn't as much information packed in with each post as Facebook, but for me that is why I enjoy it. Its kind of relaxing just being able to scroll through just pictures of your friends as opposed to somewhere like Twitter or Facebook where you are constantly reading news or in the case of Facebook, random information you could care less about. Instagram is just a lot more enjoyable, and I feel that is pretty big with my generation. It is no surprise to me that it is growing at the rate that it is.

I'm probably a little older than most of the students in the class, but I still tend to think Facebook is more helpful overall than Instagram. It's fun to look at pictures and stuff on Instagram but when it comes down to more helpful content or news, Facebook still dominates in my mind. I would agree Instagram is probably a better platform for getting quick updates from friends without tons of the "brag" feel you get from Facebook posts.

I think I am a little abnormal, since I have always stuck to Facebook and never really hopped on the Twitter bandwagon - I always appreciated the diversity of actions I could do on Facebook. However, I tend to use facebook more to keep up with old friends or see what people are up to - usually only being interested in their photos or what sort of big updates they might be posting. I recently got an Instagram and I am already obsessed with it. Given that I was more interested in the vidual aspects of facebook, I find myself spending much more time on Instragram, trying to not only see what people are doing with their day-to-day, but also trying to find a way to share my own experiences in a visually appealing way. And I think that is where Facebook has lost its novelty - some people either over-share or do so in annoying ways. With Instragram, I can ignore whatever poorly typed captions are associated with a post and see only the picture and comments. I think that aspect is what is so appealing - we can pay minimal attention to words, we can quickly scan through a picture, and we can attend to so many different posts while vicariously experiencing different places and things with people. Facebook can't really do that for us.

Insta > Book

I am a social media fanatic with Facebook and Instagram but I absolulty spend more time on Instagram. This has changed within the past year or so when i mostly used facebook. The reason I am on Instagram more in the simplicty of the application. There isn't much to know to use Instagram and that makes me enjoy it more. Facebook is more useful I'd say for family connections and school work in connecting with them. I typically use my Facebook to post picture that way my older family members have the opportunity in seeing them. As you said Facebook is growing for the adult demographic, and not so much for Instagram. My grandparents are sending me Farmville invites on Facebook, but they are not liking all my pictures on Instagram

Having the two accounts also allows me to post different pictures to the separate sites. I feel that I can be 'less professional' on instagram where as Facebook should be more professional.

I've always used "don't post what your grandma wouldn't approve of" when using Facebook.

Instagram is easy, it's simple, it's compatible. Basically, people use it because it's the catch all for sharing any pictures. Everyone has one, so it's easy to share it. When one person who is important in a group of friends starts to use it, it's easy for others to jump on board. It is ubiquitous, people have needed a universal way to share their pictures with everyone in a mass media format for a long time, and instagram is it.
