The Michigan State University New Media Drivers Licence ® Course will host a Digital Marketing “Tweetup” on Monday, Feb. 7 from 5:30 - 6:30 at Bubble Island on Grand River Ave. in downtown East Lansing.

Bubble Tea Tweetup at MSU

The Tweetup will be a great opportunity for you to come join other aspiring digital professionals, as well as current professionals and share ideas. The host of the event will be Derek Mehraban, instructor of the New Media class and CEO of Ingenex Digital Marketing.

The Tweetup will take place immediately before the Annual Career Seminar at the MSU Union, where several Advertising and Marketing agencies, including Ingenex, will have booths set up. The Seminar is put on by the MSU Advertising Association each year and hopes to provide students with insight on the advertising field, career opportunities, and tips on what to do during school and after graduation.  Most importantly, students use this event to build relations with employers to better pursue a career.

So if you are an Advertising or Marketing student, this is a great opportunity to learn about Digital Marketing and the job landscape from the professionals that work in those fields. Come out to Bubble Island on Monday, February 7th from 5:30 - 6:30, after which the whole Tweetup  will walk over to the MSU Union and career fair together.

Get your Bubble Tea on and come to the Tweetup. Bring your Tweeps.

How does a "Tweetup" really work?  Isn't it kind of awkward?  Unless you know most of the people, it seems like it would be kind of strange and uncomfortable.

Student

I will be there for the first half, I have a review session for a French graduate class that I must attend. I really enjoy the fact that you, Derek, take so much of your free time to help MSU students. Thank you very much. I think too often people achieve success and forget where they came from. Thank you for giving back to us when you didn't need to. I will definitely be making an appearance at the Union as well. One can never meet too many new faces.

Student

I think that this sounds like a great idea for networking. Before this I had never heard of a tweetup, but apparently its become fairly common for this purpose. I am not an advertising or marketing major but it still seems like a great opportunity to dive more into learning about digital marketing. I look forward to the meeting and possibly more tweet ups in the future.

Student

Hey Derek, quick question- What is the dress for this event? Also, is the seminar a mini career fair? I tried to find some information about the details but ended up finding nothing aside from the time and place. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Student

This is a great learning opportunity! What a great way to network and learn about the ever changing digital world. I really look forward to hearing what ideas current professionals have and also what aspiring digital professionals have as well because someday they may be my peers in the workplace. These are the people who keep the digital world ever changing. It is amazing how powerful this field is and how important it has become for businesses and people alike. Things are constantly changing and improving. Years ago no one even thought something like the internet would ever exist and now a days we have sites like Facebook and Twitter and can do just about anything with the internet. What will be next? What will be the new Facebook or the new popular App.? And what kind of big ideas are people sharing to help put these new internet ideas into motion? I think it is such an field and I look forward to hearing and learning more about this topic of interest.

When first looking at the "Tweet Up" I thought that it was specifically about twitter, which I really didn't think I would interested in, being that I can tweet on my own. However, after reading this post, I believe that this event is kind of cool. MSUAA along with you, Derek, created a great event  for Advertising and Marketing students in addition to others. Im not a marketing and advertising major but I think this program could be informative and help me use these tools in my field as well. Wonderful idea for a program.

Tweetups are a great way meet the people you may follow on Twitter and they allow you to connect with people on a personal level, opposed to online. I look forward to attending this event and meeting some of the "Twitter Stars." I think hosting something like this for our class is very appropriate considering the fact we are learning about social media. Tweetups are more prevalent these days, especially for good causes and charities. Tweetups provide the opportunity to bring people together for a common cause, and get to know the face behind the twitter handle.

Student

This is an awesome idea! Even though we have only been in the class for a few weeks, my eyes have really opened up to digital marketing. This event sounds like a great way to do some networking with professionals. When I first made my twitter I wasn't sure how I was going to like it but it's actually pretty neat.

Student

Well I think the only way to really comment on a blog like this is to Tweet about it, but since it is required I will say that this is a fantastic idea for this class and students looking to network before the career fair. It will be my first official Tweetup, and it only helps that it is at delicious Bubble Island. I do wonder about those without smart phones. Are  they just out of luck? or can they still be included in some way?

Student

When first reading the title of this blog, I assumed it would be all about Twitter. I thought it might be about a new application added to the new and "improved" Twitter, however, it seems much more exciting considering it is an opportunity for us to explore more about digital marketing and have a familiar face hosting the event. Any advice, tips or career opportunites would be impossible and absurd to pass up on.

Student

I think the Tweetup is a great idea to meet people beyond social media. I like the idea of meeting people face-to-face that you may have known for months over twitter or facebook. I think that everyone should try to go to this because digital marketing is the next/current big wave for advertising and marketing.

Student

Finally, something to get me into Bubble Island. I've never really understood what it is, so now I get to find out and learn some great tweeting tips. I even plan to bring a Marketing friend, and hope to discover some great opportunities.

Student

When I first read the invite on Facebook for the "Tweetup" event, I was a bit confused. After looking into it a bit more, it seems like a great idea! I truly look forward to getting some tips about twitter, and how to seamlessly incorporate it into my everyday life. "Bring your tweeps" is such a great tagline, and I wouldn't expect any less in such a constantly innovative field. I want to find my way ahead of the curve, and I know this is a great opportunity to do so. I hope to continue to take full advantage of the activities and events that the MSU Advertising Association has to offer as well, so I can have the best possible edge in such competitive, economically challenging times. It's exciting to think how much this class can help me in my future career. At the end of the day, twitter plays a small yet efficient role in the success of many niche companies.

 Twitter = Money

Student

This sounds like a really cool idea. New ways to network with people are always welcomed, especially from the perspective of a college student. As an Advertising student who really hasn't had much exposure to the professional field of Advertising, I'm really excited about the opportunities that this can provide. I've got to admit, at first I was a little skeptical of a "Tweetup," but it sounds like something that would be great to be a part of, and I definitely plan on being there for it.

Student

Just like many other students in our class, I have never heard of a Tweetup before now. After reading other people's comments, though, I think I have a pretty good idea of what happens at one of these events. It sounds like this Tweetup will be be a great way to network with other students and professionals within the industry. I am looking forward to attending and drinking some Bubble Tea!

Student

I feel like this is a great opportunity that I am definetly going to take advantage of.  With the job market the way it is today anything like this can only help you in the long run.  I also feel the bubble island get together is something that will be new and fun that will also be very beneficial.  Ive never really taken advantage of any opportunities like these in the past and this class has really influenced me to change that and really get my name out there.  Why not right?

Student

Tweetups are a great way to network with people with your same interests, whether it be career related or otherwise. I've been to two tweetups that were hosted in the Metro Detroit area by a PR agency that focused on bringing PR students and professionals together. I ended up landing an internship! There are another of regular networking and tweetup events that happen around Lansing and Detroit. A few to check out are MidMichigan Tweetup, Lansing Happy Hour Club, Social Media Club of Detroit , and TweetTea.

Student

I think this Tweetup will be a fun way to interact with other classmates as well at influential people in the business. I'm also pumped about the career fair after, because I've never been to one. The ones the university hold always seem so intimidating :/ It will be nice to be able to hopefully meet with people in a smaller, more relaxed environment. One question about the tweetup though. I'm probably one of the last people on earth who hasn't upgraded to a smartphone yet. I know I can text my tweets into Twitter, but I was just wondering if this will limit or affect my experience at all?

Student

Sounds like a great time. I haven't had Bubble Tea since freshman year. I've also never been to a career fair :/ so this sounds like a perfect opportunity to meet with some professionals, get some tea, and go to the career fair. A whole slew of new things to be a part of. I'm curious as to where Twitter will come into play with all of this. I guess we can all just Tweet about who we just talked to and what about. But then again I could just turn to my neighbor and actually be social. Regardless, see you there. I'll be wearing a grey suite, white oxford, no undershirt, lots of taco meat.

Student

I was first to comment about how I am looking forward to this however I did not elaborate why. Twitter is a new site that I am becoming accustomed to. Going to an event like this will really broaden my knowledge on the microblogging site and provide me with further tools on how to make my twitter more marketable. I will be able to network and ask questions while getting insight on the advertising field, career opportunities, and tips which is critical right now as a second semester senior! I'm excited to check it out!

Student

I definitely am going to have to make a stop by the Union to check out this seminar.  I have some advertising experience with a couple companies but nothing real big and I'm looking to find that one big jump to set me apart in this competitive economy.  Any opportunity like this would be nuts to pass up.  All you hear anyone tell you anymore about getting into the job world is "network, network, network."  The more people you meet the better, even being able to snag a volunteer position at an ad agency would be clutch for experience in the long run.

Student

I think that the common trend here is that we are so thankful for this opportunity and that it's something entirely new. The business college and comm arts building should really start using their plasma tv's for live twitter posts tagging events like this and the other information posted on each respective college's twitter account. I know someone mentioned it earlier, but this seminar was barely advertised. When I'm walking through the building, I usually glace at the tv's and it would've been nice to see this scrolling through. Not sure if this idea is really possible, but it was just a thought.

Student

Well first of all, I am the President of MSU Ad Association and it is great to have a promotion like this for our career fair. I am also in the picture posted when you click on MSU Advertisign Association link in the blog post. The Tweetup sounds like a great opportunity to network with industry professionals and get your head in the game before speaking with companies at the fair. We are still finalizing some agencies, but other comapnies that will be represented at the fair include Leo Burnett, Motion Marketing and Media, Allied Integrated Marketing, Doner, and Goodby Silverstein and Partners. It is free for paid MSU Advertising Association members and $3 for everyone else.

Student

I am really excited about this opportunity.  I am an advertising major and am looking for any way to advance myself in this new world of media. As a senior I feel scared of the "real world" that I am about to enter and this Tweetup seems like a great ways to learn about career opportunities and tips on how to enter my future.  This is also a way to explore somewhat of the interview aspects as I feel I will get more comfortable talking about my future and talking with professionals about my career.

Student

I'm really looking forward to this opportunity to meet professionals in Advertising and Marketing and show off some skills. Never heard of Bubble Tea before nor do I know how to put it on. lol Just kidding, but I'm not much of a "tea" guy so maybe I'll bring a Caramel Macchiato or something and spice it up a bit. So at this Tweetup, my purpose will be to get my Caramel Macchiato on with others that are trying to get their Caramel Macchiato on. Sorry I'm on a different planet lol. Looking forward to this tho!

Student

I'm really excited about the design of this class! This website has been an amazing tool. Other online classes I have taken have fought to use Angel and other sites in order to encourage communication between students. However, this site makes it easy to interact with each other and our professors, not to mention the fact that it is completely custom. That being said, I believe that this will someday be how college is taught. Students will spend less time in university settings, sitting in classrooms and listening to professors lecture. It will be more skill based and applying knowledge in practical ways. I believe that in many ways this will be a good thing for our modern world. However, the idea of an online class have a meeting to talk about a specific topic is an awesome idea. This was the first time I had heard of a "Tweetup" and a "mini-lecture" like this will be a great learning experience. Many people have a lot of experience with Twitter so I'm sure it'll help this students share their skills with people like me who have never been a Tweeter.

Student

I totally agree! More and more of our classes are being taught online. Many of my classes have been changed to hybrid classes and I like them alot better than just listening to lectures every day. Having some assignments online is a nice change up and I especially like how this class is online yet I am getting to know alot of other classmates through the blogs and bios.

Student

And this is just one more thing that reinforces my belief that of all the social media outlets I am definitely more twitter-handicapped than anything else. I had never heard of a tweetup or pretty much any of the other twitter jargon that I discovered when I proceeded to lookup what a Tweetup techinically was. However I do think it is an incredible thing that impresses me just when I think I have heard of it all. I will definitely be attending this, and the career seminar, and I look forward to doing it. Hopefully with the more I attend and interact with people who are superior in their understanding of the Twitter world I will improve my own knowledge of it all and won't be so taken by surprise when the next event rolls around that I have to google to know what it entails. This class is truly the most interesting class I have taken thus far.

Student

I have never heard about “Tweetup” event before, but It sounds like a good opportunity learning more about digital marketing. I think this seminar would provide valuable information and beneficial someone who is interested in getting job for those fields. I’d like to attend.

Student

I think this is a great opportunity for students to learn more about digital marketing. This is also a great idea because people are always asking for tips on how they can stand out in the advertising field. This event will give students an opportunity to ask questions and concerns about job opportunities, internships, and the job market after graduation. When it comes to Twitter people usually try and change the conversation. Even though a lot of people have a twitter they don't use it to its full capability. This event will be beneficial for anyone who is going to be entering the "job world" soon.

Student

I have actually never even heard of a "Tweetup." It sounds like a great opportunity for us. It's probably bad that I didn't know that the Anual Career Seminar was going on either. It's great that it is on a Monday. Usually things seem to happen when I have to go to work or something. Some times I feel weird going places by myself where I don't know anyone, but I know that is something I am going to have to get over. I just wonder if Bubble Island will be able to fit everyone.

Student

This a a great event, especially for a graduating senior such as myself. Not only is it a great opportunity to learn more about digital marketing, but it is also a great opportunity to network. I'm learning more and more from this class just how much social media brings people together, and this Tweetup is a great example of that. This Tweetup will allow me to network with professionals in the field I'm going into, and then social media will allow me to further keep in contact with these professionals. I'm excited for this event and will definitely be in attendance!

Student

Bubble Island not only sounds delicious but this sounds like a great opportunity to learn more about the digital world! Thanks for letting the class know about this meeting, I haven't heard about it other than from you, which is 1 more reason why this class is so awesome! For some people that are thinking about going, it's also a great way to network, especially for those students who are graduating soon and trying to find a job. I hope to see everyone there!

Student

What a cool opportunity! As a Marketing student, I don't hear much about what does on in the Advertising department or the MSU Advertising Association. However, I am also very interested in advertising job opportunities. This class has proved to me that the digital profession is where it's at. Especially as a graduating senior, I couldn't pass up these great events. Hopefully Bubble Island will have a large enough space for everyone attending! I know I'll be there!

Student

I learn new things every day from this class. Until you invited us to this event I had never heard of a tweetup before. It's always interesting how the new forms of media keep changing our vocabulary, googled, tweetup, and tweet. It's no wonder my grandparents look at me funny sometimes when I'm talking about things from the internet. It's really great to hear about this event though I've never heard about it before, and seeing as this is my senior year I'm a bit sad about the missed opportunities in the past. Digital has always been an area of great interest for me so I'm grateful that you're informing us about this great opportunity.

Student

I'm so thankful for this opportunity, what a great idea! Similar to many others who have already posted, I haven't attended a Tweetup before or even heard of the term. As a senior, I'm a little ashamed to say that I've also never attended a career seminar or fair here at State. I'm looking forward to this event and being able to meet current professionals. Plus, who can resist indulging in a peach strawberry snow bubble with mango stars?

Student

I have never heard the term Tweetup before.  It's amazing the kind of lingo that comes out of all the new social media on the web.  This sounds like an amazing opportunity to create some connections and network with people that are interested in hiring students who know the new rules of marketing and pr and I will definately be in attendance.  Many companies these days don't really know what a New Media Driver's License is because it's such a new concept in todays business world.  However, I think this will be a great opportunity to showcase how beneficial this course really has been for the students who are taking it.  Can't wait to meet some of these Digital Marketing lovers!

Student

I'm so glad you posted this! It's unfortunate, but sometimes events like these aren't communicated as well to the Business students. I'll definitely be tagging the broad college in a tweet to get the message out to business students as well. thanks!

Student

Wow! A Tweetup! What an interesting concept.  I knew social media was important, but I never realized there are so many different ways it can be incorporated into every day events.  I have never heard of the Annual Career Seminar before so I am happy this was brought to my attention.  Being a graduating senior in May, I think that events like this would be extremely beneficial for me to attend.   Getting involved no matter what is always important, and I think it's a plus that it involves building relations with employers!

Student

I have never heard of a "Tweetup" before but this sounds like a great idea and great opportunity to meet alot of new people. Its nice to meet some of the other people in this class because when I am having a hard time on an assignment I will be able to ask those new friends for some help. Also its exciting that we will be able to go to the Annual Career Seminar in a big group so I don't feel as weird going alone! I am excited to be able to meet and listen to people's experiences in the field that I am interested and I am sure I and everyone else will benefit from this Tweetup!

Student

Although I've always had a strong interest in social media, and have been on Twitter, Linkedin, and Facebook for some years now, I have yet had the opportunity  to attend a Tweetup. I unfortunately won't be able to attend due to work, yet look forward to seeing all the tweets that will take place. I think that a tweetup is a great strategy to increase publicity for an event, and should be used my organizations more often.

Student

Seems like I'm with a lot of the group in saying I had never heard of a "tweetup" before, but I think it's a really interesting idea. I'm surprised it hasn't been advertised more, but I guess that's the point of a tweetup in the first place.  I haven't had the opportunity to get out to many career fairs/seminars on campus, so I'm looking forward to this opportunity. Does anyone have thoughts on what to expect or look forward to?

Also, I have a Twitter account and use it more often than I used to, but I think opportunities like this are a great way to get people more used to the social media scene and its importance. I even used the button at the top of this entry to post the event link to my Facebook page. Looking forward to Monday!

Student

I had never heard of a tweetup before either. I am completely new to twitter and learning all of the new terminology. From what I have read, a tweetup is an event that was organized via twitter. I have heard of many events that were organized by twitter but I didn’t realize they had a name attached. I find it really interesting because, not to get off topic but in my Journalism class today they were discussing how not just events but even revolutions (in other countries) have begun via twitter. It’s really crazy what social media is capable of. I think it is important to realize what an amazing marketing opportunity twitter and all forms of social media are today and how many people it allows us to reach.

Student

This course has really opened my eyes to the significance of Social Media. Facebook seems like the main source of advertising, but I am quickly learning otherwise. A "Digital Marketing Tweetup" is an event that I never thought possible to exist. Generating innovative ideas while networking with professionals will help expand one's knowledge on Social Media practices. Hosting this event before the Annual Career Seminar at the MSU Union serves as encouragement for students to build career opportunities.

Student

Before reading this blog post I had never heard of a "tweetup" before.  Keeping up with social media can be difficult and at a young age of 21 I felt like I was already starting to fall behind thats why I signed up for this class.  I am alredy learning new lingo for the digital world.  This sounds like a fantastic networking idea, but I'm still a little confused as to what a tweetup is.  From this blog post I know its a group of people getting together to share ideas and network, but what does it have to do with Twitter?

Student

This sounds like a great opportunity to network with professionals and fellow students!  I have attended several career fairs that were put on by the MSU Advertising Association before, but I've never been/heard of Tweetup.  This definitely sounds interesting and fun!  I love bubble tea, and bubble island is delicious.  I definitely added this event to my google calendar.  I hope to meet some new people there that night!

Student

I am very excited to attend this Tweetup! I have heard about Tweetups but this will be the first time I will actually get to partake in one. This particular Tweetup is at the perfect time, NMDL has the opportunity to meet with professional BEFORE the career fair. This is huge, we get the leg-up in introducing ourselves before these professionals meet hundreds of students at the career fair. I am very excited to Tweetup and find out what the whole experience entails.

Student

I think this is great opportunity for advertising students. My major is advertising. So I interest  this kind of seminar. Actually I was Asian Advertising Association(SpartAds) communication manager in MSU during last 2years. So I want to share this information with my other members. I think that  it is great chance for upgrading students' ability. Actually, I am international student who is from south Korea. In Korea, it is not common event like this seminar. Normally all students have to pay a lot of fee for this kind of seminar if they want to participate in. So I always surprise when I saw this kind of information or chance in the U.S.. I think U.S. government or state government gives many opportunities to studnets. So sometimes, I envy the U.S. education system. I often see this announcement like this sminar when I am attending this school. For example, I lives in Owen Hall where is in MSU campus. Last week, some of professional people tought about social medai such as linkedin, facebook, and twitter. It was really helpful to understand and do my ADV 492 Assignment. After watching this program, it is certain that I improve to treat social media. Actually I interest  this Digital marketing. But I am not good at treat this program even if I am advertising major senior studnet. So I am thanks for this opportunity. I hope that MSU often try to open this kind of seminar before I graduate school. In addition, I love bubble tea. Therefore, I expect next  Monday. See you then. Thanks

Student

This sounds like a great opportunity to network while enjoying super Bubble Tea~~~ I Have never participated in a Tweetup before, so I am really interested to see how this works and what happens are at there. As advertiser, I really want to go there. let's go together~~~
