Consider sharing it with your friends.

Do you use Spotify? How about Pandora?

The answer's probably yes... I think. I know I couldn't get by without Spotify.

More and more, online advertisers are looking at Spotify and Pandora -- often times in lieu of radio ads. In Detroit, Pandora would be one of the top five radio stations if it was on the air, and it's continuing to grow.

Pandora is even getting into political advertising, by trying to pinpoint voter preferences to make it easier for campaigns to serve ads.

What do you think the advantages and disadvantages would be of Spotify and Pandora advertising? When would you think these would work best for a client? When wouldn't they be good options?

Personally, since there exist a lot of population utilizing Spotify and Pandora, it is a great platform for any company or firms to advertise their promotion or campaign. They do give out any information or news throughout this social media, and it is successful for reminding their clients or target audiences by having them listening about the company! On the other hand, people usually do not listen to radio as much as did in the past, and this naturally ends up for losing population at the end ultimately. I think when there are big sports events or national events, it will be the best for a cliet to have more audiences to advertise them! I do not think there wouldn't be good options enough when YouTube or any other social media runs campaign or promotions.

Since I do use Spotify. I think the it is kind of useless to put a advertising between the song because I actually don't care about it most of the time. It would be really nice to put interesting sounds just like song would take the attention of the listeners.

Student

I do use Pandora. I think the advantage/disadvantage of advertising would be that yes the ads would reach a lot of people, but are people really listening to those ads when they come on in between songs? I think the appropriate use of these ads would be for products that do not need much explanation, and want to focus on frequency of the brand.

The only way adverstising on apps or a website would be benifical was if you were adversiting an app or website.  For example, iTunes could have an ad on Pandora and allow you to click a button to buy the song you just listened to. You can do it right on your computer or phone because iTunes is already there and ready to go.  It is a helpful and easy tap of a phone screen.  Car or food ads wouldn't really have a lot of gain from using Pandora or Spotify to advertise on because the people using it at that moment probably aren't looking to buy a car or go get something to eat.  You have to think, 'what is this person doing when using this product' the answer is usually working out, studying, driving or working. These activities limit what kind of products would benefit at that time.

Online advertisers realize the popularity of Spotify and Pandora provides a great opportunity to further reach their desired audience. I personally, only use Pandora occasionally. However, I know most of my friends are obsessed with their Spotify account. Whenever I am on Pandora, the ads are annoying, but I know that I have no other choice but to listen to them. Therefore, I think that taking advantage of advertising, via these music platforms, is a wise decision. The more exposure, the more successful a campaign will be. It is also a nice option that consumers can click on a link after the ad if they want to know more. Thus, they have the ability to control if they want to know further information.

I think advertising on Pandora or Spotify is smart. There are a lot of people who use those websites everyday while working on homework, while at a job or even just driving around. While having the web browser open on the computer every few songs or so there will be an interruption of your music playing so an advertisement can be played. While the advertisement is trying to get more people to look at their product I find it extremely annoying to have my music interrupted. Also on the music websites there tend to be advertisements along the side of the page in theory I think it is a good idea but if people are like me they open the browser, playing their station and then minimize the screen so then they aren’t even looking at that page any more. Companies need to get their ads out and I think it is smart to do so using Pandora or Spotify but at the same time the users on those websites might be annoyed with all the interruptions.

Spotify and Pandora grew so quickly due to the lack of ads. People don;t want to hear commercials on the radio, and often times when they come on, people tune them out or change the channel. But as they became so big, the ads were something they couldn't avoid including, much like how Youtube rarely has a popular video without an ad in front of it nowadays. When advertisers know something draws a lot of attention, they are obviously going to utulize it. Using Spotify and Pandora strategically though it an interesting thought. If one tailored the advertising message to the targeted group that is listening based on statistics it would be incredibly beneficial, and a creative way of reaching your specific audience (based on age group and music preference, etc) via 'new' medium. Political advertising may be taking it a little too far though in my opinion. Although statistics due prove to be helpful, it's not 100% correct all the time, and at the risk of offending someone or forcing them to hear something they are completely uninterested in hearing, I think politicians should steer somewhat clear of these mediums for their ads.

I think that Pandora and Spotify comemrcial segments have done a great job getting the ads out that pay for their time slots, I personally can recall dozens of ads that were worked into my morning workout palylist for months at a time and really stuck with me. I think that sometimes people will get frustrated and build a dislike of the commercial company that interrupts their music, but other times, if someone is using it as background noise or are busy multitasking, the commercial can be an unskippable segment and not provoke too much dissapointment from the listener (as is the case with me)

Honestly I don't think I would ever chose online radio advertising as an option for a client. My friends and I use it all the time while we study or are going out, but I can't recall one advertisment I have heard on Pandora or Spotfiy. We tend to ignore the advertisments, turn them down or chose that time to talk to one another. Online radio advertisings have a really bad rep for being annoying and a lot of people got frustrated when they started on Pandora. We are always in search for noninterupption and even change the channel on from one radio station to another, or one tv channel to the next just to avoid ads. Solely based on my personal experience and friends/family members reactions to online radio advertising I would tell a client it is a waste of money.

Student

Personally, I ignore the ads or look at something else when they play on Pandora as do a lot of people I know who listen to it. One thing I've noticed when I do listen to the ads is that some of them are local ads. Lately Pandora has played radio ads for Cata buses and Lansing based politics. I think it is beneficial for local companies to put ads on Pandora in areas they would like to be heavily relevant.

Student

I do use both online line radios and I think that advertising on these media's is very effective. I think the advantage of advertsing on the online radio station would be that people cannot skip the adds and they are willing to sit through the advertsiments because the want to listen to free music.

Student

I use both Spotify and Pandora.  I think the advantages of spotify and pandora advertising is that since they are always playing music and rarely have commercials, it really forces you to listen to the commercial.  The disadvantage is that you can buy a spotify premium account and not have any commercials. To be honest I am not sure when they would work best for a client.  I would think it would work fine all the time.

Student

Well whenever i listen to pandora, the free version that is the advetisements are really just interruptions in your music.  ANd i know once you pay for pandora you loose a significant amount of the advetisements, so i may pay to get less advertisments.  But i think it is a very msart for businesses to advertise on spotify and pandora, they are both glorified radio stations that are not on the air any way.

Student

From my personal experience, I normally stay with a commercial on either station that I always listen.

Student

I don't there there is a day that goes by where I don't use Pandora at least once. I listen at work, when I'm studying, walking to class... pretty much everywhere. I think that's the case for a lot of people. Their audience is huge so the ads they choose to play are being heard by a lot of people. Also, because the ads are so short I think a lot people are too lazy to change the station as opposed to the radio where they can change it in a second. This is good for the advertisers. However, I definitely think that the advertisers need to think carefully about who their audience is for their product/service and decide if those people are using Pandora. If they are, then yes it's a great spot to advertise. However, if their audience aren't the people listening to those apps, they should probably choose to try a different place to advertise.

Student

Personally, I love both Pandora and Spotify. Although, I will admit that the ads in between my music are often ignored as I'm more concerned with the next song that will play. This is I think a common disadvantage of music and often radio advertising. As far as advantages, ads are good options if the listener is somewhat secluded, which in many cases, is true. Often, we listen with our headphones or while we are doing a somewhat focused activity where we have the opportunity to take in the advertisement and pay attention, free from distractions. With such a wide reach of listeners who use Spotify and Pandora the advertisements would certainly expand their target audience. However, Spotify and Pandora also can be used in group settings as a form of radio or entertainment. In that case, advertisements are simply creating clutter, frustration and are certainly ignored. It's hard to find a solid balance. Plus, the advertisements in between songs are definitely expensive, so it's essential to analyze the benefits and risks for your company specifically.

Student

Although there are advantages and disadvantages to just about every advertising and marketing strategy, I think advertising on Spotify and Pandora are a great way to reach audiences.

The perk of using a station such as Pandora or Spotify is that there's no need to change the station. Once you find a playlist you enjoy listening to, you often don't get up to change it. This means that those 15 or 30 second commercials usually aren't enough of a motive to get up and turn it off. Advertising here is an easy way to force listeners to keep their attention on the station.

However, the advertisements may be drowned out or simply ignored. The fact about this... many advertisements are. It's simply innevitable.

Another great thing about advertising on Pandora or Spotify is the ability to more closely reach your audience. For example, the advertisements can be completely different on an opera station as they would be on a rap station. This is another great advantage.

Advertising on Spotify and Pandora is a great way to get your product known to many target markets.  When listening to the free version of Pandora, I know that I’m going to listen to advertisements—it’s probably what gives avid users the incentive to purchase the full app.  When advertising via Spotify or Pandora you know that you have the attention of the listener.  Unlike the actual radio where the listener has the option of changing stations, it is more likely that a Pandora listener will listen through the advertisement in order to get back to the station’s music they are on.  With both of these music applications being strong in mobile devices, they allow the advertisements to be interactive.  The listener has the option of clicking on the ad to get more information if they are interested. Advertising through either Spotify or Pandora would be a great way to gain awareness for your company or create a buzz about a new product you may be promoting.

Student

You can relate what music a user listens to, to their likely demographic and use targeted advertising. However, this not going to be 100% accurate. Hulu (the paid version) still has commercials but, its three per show and they are normally short. I can deal with that as long as Hulu provides superior content. I use the paid version of Spotify mostly because I can have tracks on my mobile device online so ads for that would drive me nuts. If I used the free version however, I could accept them. As long as the content spotify provides is worth listening to the ads.

Student

I think there are great advantages of advertising on Spotify or Pandora. As an avid user of Pandora, and having not wanted to purchase the App to rid myself of the commercials I am bound to listen to the different advertisements to listen to the next song. Pandora makes it so that the listener has to get through an advertisement to make it to the next song, thereby implanting that advertisement. It's also a great way to put one's company out into the world because Pandora as well as Spotify focus on certain demographics when they launch their advertisements, so it gets to the right customers. By being able to click on the advertisement as it's playing, it also allows the user to explore the company. The disadvantage to this way of advertising may be that the user gets fed up with the multiple advertisements interupting the music, and begins not using the App.

I think this type of advertising would work best for a client who really wants to get their name out there, and start building recognition for their company. This way of advertising wouldn't be good options when a company already has a large customer base and already has made a name for themselves.

Advertising on Spotify and Pandora are fantastic ways to get your product across to your target market. I know that personally, whenever I listen to Spotify I am getting more familiar with each commercial that gets played. I'll hear the music and instantly be able to recognize what the advertisement is for. It's also a great way to target people in a certain area. Whenever I listen in I always hear advertisements for Oakland University or Central Michigan University.

Student

Pandora and Spotify are fantastic for targeting a younger audience with products and services. As a Spotify user, I know I have the option of paying for it to skip the ads (I'm assuming it's the same way with Pandora), which could be considered a disadvantage for advertisers. Ads are annoying, yes, but they assuredly reach a specific audience for people like me who are willing to put up with ads for such a great free service. Advertisers need to take into account the kinds of products or services they are promoting. An example I hear all the time is from Oakland University. This is pertinent to me as a young twenty-something pursuing her education. Products like prescription drugs would not in any capacity be appropriate for this medium. As I mentioned before, you have to think who typically would use Pandora and Spotify and who else could be a listener.

Student

Advantages would be the Inbound Marketing factors because people would have no way to avoid the advertising and since it's radio it's entertaining. Disadvantages would be the cost necessary to use those two advertisings. They work best for a client driving a car or something like that. They wouldn't be good options in rural areas.

Student

Using Spotify and Pandora are really good for the companies because with the advertising, they can actually advertise because people do not have the option to skip through and have to listen to all that comes out. For a client, these would work the best while they are driving or in an area that listens to a lot of radio.

Student

Regarding advertising through Spotify and Pandora, it gives clients a couple of useful resources to use.  For example, the specific markets can be targeted to regarding the type of music they listen to.  Also, people don't have the option to skip the ads, they have to listen to what they are advertising, which makes it a useful tool for the client to use.  Overall, the use of advertising on Pandora and Spotify will be a great idea for any company.

Student

One of the problems of internet radio adversiting is that it can lead to negative feelings towareds that company from some consumers but since the music is free many will deal with it even if they dislike it. I dont think using the ads on spotify to pinpoint voter preference is a good idea because is when someones trying to listen to music on the interent really the best idea to ask them what their stance on issues is? The problem with the growing of adverstisements on this site is that sometimes these companies run ads that arent exactly appropriate for the time or place the user may be in. I mean it always sucks when you are in the middle of an album and a commercial for soemthing comes on i dont think many people even listen to the ads but are just anticipating when they will end.

Student

I'm apparently behind on the latest and greatest music Apps. I did use Pandora, for awhile, but have never even heard of Spotify. I actually stopped using Pandora because I hated being interupted with advertisements every few songs or so. It would be an advantage to the client to be able to more narrowly target their audience. Someone searching for kids music for example would be targeted with advertisments for the Disney Land, Legos, and Barbie. However the more advertisments that flood these apps will just leave people looking for the newest music app with more music and less advertisement.

Student

I think both Pandora and Spotify are good places to advertise. They have large audiences and they seem like they are continuing to grow. Pandora has replaced aimlessly searching through iTunes for songs and creating playlists. A simple search for a radio station can lead to hours of listening. I can imagine that a well-placed advertisement can be huge for a company. If they can find a way to link certain music listeners with certain products, that would seem be very beneficial. However, people constantly change the station while advertisements are playing or turn down the radio while the advertisement is playing.  This would be the only time that I could see these advertisements not being beneficial. I think music preference can say a lot about something so a person’s music history could be very beneficial to an advertising company. They could tailor ads for certain listeners and create the most valuable advertisements possible.

Student

The advantage for advertising on Spotify or Pandora is that people will have to listen to your ads (which is the case for Spotify if not Pandora): these apps will pause the ads if you click mute button when the ad is on. The disadvantage will obviously be its limited demographics: The target audince for the ads need to be 1) music lovers, listenting to music very often or everyday; This alealdy exluded many brands, ie: B2B brands.

Student

I think you can hit a much wider target audience with internet radio stations. It would be relatively strait forward to target certain groups based on the genera of music. You could very precisely tailor the advertisements to the listening demographics. I believe the major drawback would be the timing of the ads. You can turn Pandora and Spotify on and off whenever you please therefore it may be challenging to advertise time sensitive things.

Student

I thinkPandora, and Spotify have to increase the amount of ad spots because we listen good music for free. It is not fair for who have music and make our life better with beautiful music.

But I'm not sure of getting into political advertising. Political views are too different from one and other. I think Pandora users might be distracted by political advertising.

Student

Although I have never used spotify, I am always using Pandora. Sometimes I find the ads very annoying, which I'm sure other people do as well. I think the best way to not pester your customers is to try something like what facebook has done. Facebook has tracked what you are searching on the web and what your interests are and advertise them. If Pandora and Spotify jump on board with this idea I think it would benefit them greatly.

Student

I think that advertising on Spotify and Pandora would have a lot of advantages. In my perspective, I do not listen to the ads on my radio stations and most times I try to skip them. If someone really wanted to be heard, the chances of peple actually listening to the ad, and it not be only background noice, is pretty low. But, the advantage of it would be that it can target such a large target area. Online radios like these are growing and becoming more popular. I think these ads would work best for certain stations. I do not think that it would be a good option for the younger population because they do not want to listen to ads, they just want to listen to their music. Therefore, in general, I do not think that this kind of advertisment is the best option. It is more like bachground noice to people, they do not really listen to what the ad is saying.

Student

I think the music you listen to says a lot about preferences in other areas. It might show insight into which products you would be likely to buy or where you would be likely to eat. Altough it may not be 100% accurate, it's an amazing new technology in the world of advertising that could transform the way buy personas are put together. Everyone listens to music, so it would be able to connect with those consumers who don't participate in any other mediums that make their demographics and preferences available. I use the free version of Pandora and Spotify right now, and I already hear ads that I can tell are catered to me because of my location.

Student

I think that there are some distinct advantages and disadvantages to Online Radio Advertising. One of the main disadvantages would be that many listeners would choose to simply ignore such advertisments. I know that when I listen to online radio actively, I often just hit the mute button because I get irritated of hearing the same ad on Spotify over and over again. However, an advantage of this type of advertising would be that passive listeners may end up hearing the ads and learning something new from them. Sometimes, if I am getting ready or doing homework while listening to online radio, I am too lazy to mute or skip ads. These are the times where I might end up listening to them (probably by accident).

Student

I use Spotify religiously and my taste in music has improved drastically because of it. However, I pay a $9.99 monthly fee specifically to avoid advertisements. Like many other people these days, I prefer to live in an ad-free world, whether it's paying extra for Spotify Premium, using a DVR for TV shows, or skipping a YouTube video if there an ad is playing first. I (pathetically) don't have the patience or desire to watch ads, and I believe people like me are definitely changing the way companies choose to advertise.

Both Spotify and Pandora are valuable apps that are super popular, even despite their excessive advertising. I personally find the ads exceedingly annoying, and I feel like they are increasing in frequency. Although they are intrusive, the ads can be specifically targeted based on what the user is listening too, giving them an advantage. The users are also required to listen to or watch these ads if they wish to continue using the service. These ads would work best for a client looking to reach a certain market, but given the lack of patience that many users like myself face, they are definitely a nuisance.

Student

The advantages of adertising for Pandora and Spotify is that they target a more specified demographic. They get their segmented listeners through all the different artists and through this they can advertise specific ads to the approopriate listeners, and due to the speciifc listeners these ads can connect to the listeners more prominently. The disadvantages would be "wearout." Some listeners could be annoyed and deterred by the ads so they might stop listening. These would work best for a client if there is a certain political party advertising, becuase they can gain loyal party votes if they advertise to specific listeners. These wouldn't be a good option if you promote advertising toward a client that has nothing to do with the listeners, because the listeners would just become annoyed.

Student

I think the main disadnvantage of online radio advertising is that it is considered a nuisance. Users do everything they can to avoid them, and the services themselves offer a paid subscription service where you don't need to hear the ads at all. At the same time, Spotify and Pandroa's users grow every day, and allow you very specific targeting capabilities. I think they are good for regional targeting, though they shouldn't be a priority, and they can also be good if you can work in an interactive feature. A lot of Spoify ads have a "Click now" type of call-to-action.

Every time I go through these assignments I learn about new things out there. I always ignored Spotify and Pandora ads whenever it popped up while I was on internet. I figured out there's an app for these programs that I can easily download on my iPhone for free and listen to any types of music that I feel like to on any moments. I usually use YouTube whenever I need to listen to music on my computer and smart phone. I think the advantages of these apps are that I don’t have to download songs like old school but instead, I can just look it up and make my playlist instantly through the program for free. Here is some related article about Spotify and Pandora explanations comparing with others.

Student

I have never used spotify, however I do use Pandora a good deal. I usually use Pandora when I'm just hanging out in my room or before a party. I think the disadvantages to the Pandora advertisements is that people find them extremely annoying and it really does cut into the mood of things when you are playing continuous music and a 20 second ad comes on and ruins the mood for you and everyone else. I thing the advantages to ads on Pandora would be that you can target a certain audience depending what channel they are on or what music they are listening to so that's always a benefit. Also if someone is on Pandora they're just giong to listen to the ad instead of switching to something else, because that would take even more time to do. I personally pay for Pandora and don't deal with the ads.

Student

I use pandora occassionaly when studying, but I use Grooveshark.com the most, because you can actually choose the songs that are on your play list, and save them. I do believe that advertising throught these sites is useful though, because you HAVE to listen to them if you want to continue to listen to your music. Unlike youtube where you can skip through, you are forced to listen to ads no matter how long they are, which is useful in political campagins to get a voice across. I'm assuming most of Pandora's users are in their 20s, so it is extra useful when reaching out to the prime voters.

Student

I have used Pandora in the past but because of the ads I would rather pay for SiriusXM where I have more control over what I am listening to.  I think Pandora should be careful with the approach they are taking with political advertising.  People may not change the channel because you are targeting them with Pepsi over Coke but if you are continuously playing political advertisements that they don’t agree with, and don’t want to hear, they are not going to keep listening.  I’m sure there is some validity to how they are approaching this but as someone who has an interest in a wide variety of musical genres, I don’t want to be subjected to a particular political view based on the music I feel like listening to that day.

Student

I use pandora fairly often and I personally hate the advertisements. However I do see the advantages for advertisers to market their brand to pandora users. Pandora serves a huge client base and it's slightly easier to find your target audience according to the more specific stations pandora offers. Unlike radio and TV pandora users cannot easily switch their channel to avoid the ad, so they are more likely to listen to the whole thing. From an advertisers stand point I believe getting a spot on pandora or spotify is a wise decision.

Student

I have used Pandora in the past but I have never used Spotify. I find the ads to be extremely annoying especially if I'm listening while running and I'm using the music to keep me going. I now use 8 tracks which allows use to choose from a variety of genres for your listening pleasure. There are no commercials just continuous music. I think such ads can be effective when trying to target a specific audience based off their choice in music. However, I don't feel that listeners always pay the upmost attention to the ads which can be a disadvantage to the advertisers and their overall object.

Student

Although there are some disadvantages to advertising on Pandora or Spotify, I feel that the advantages severely outweight the disadvantages.  The best advantage of advertising on Pandora or Sportify is that you are exposed to an enourmous audience, which is uncomparable to advertising on local radio.  Also, you can target your audience when advertising on Pandora or Spotify based on location and genre of music.  The ability to narrow your advertising to a specific target market most likely yields a better return on investment for any company.  The one disadvantage to advertising on one of those two platforms is that it is hard to associate a certain genre of music with a company, brand, or product.  Also, many people, such as myself, completely zone out when the advertisements come on, as we have no interest in listening to an advertisement while trying to listen to music.  I think the best times to advertise would be around the holidays because many families like to put on background music during family events and don't want to have to actively be a DJ for the night while enjoying their family time.  I feel that there aren't really any specific times that advertising on Pandor or Spotify would be bad because people are always using those two platforms to listen to music.

Student

Personally I do not use Pandora or Spotify anymore, instead I use Google Play, which is an app that allows all of my itunes music to be automatically uploaded onto my phone. There is actually no ads on this app. Although I do not use these online radios, I have in the past. I think an advantage can be that it is easy to see someones interests by what they listen to, such as advertise for country shows/concerts for someone listening to country music. They can also chose ads that would be interests of a 'stereotypes' of people who listen to country music. Just for an example someone may assume that a person who listens to country music may like to drink beer, therefore they can place an advertisement for beer. Some disadvantages are that people often will be annoyed getting commercials inbetween songs. This is personally why I chose to use Google Play music. I can listen to music non stop without being interupted. Especially since it is a common thing for people to hook their phones up to speakers for get togethers. Nobody wants the party interupted with a commercial.

Student

I am a big user of online radios, I have pandora, Spotify and Itunes radio. I think that using these as a way to reach and audience could be both good and bad, depending on who the client is. I think that music is a hard way to tell things about who you are trying to reach, the products that are on the ads would have to be more of a general product or for any listener. For example, I often get ads that are in spanish on my pandora, I am not sure what made them think that I could speak or understand spanish considering its often on the today's hits or today's country radio. When I hear these ads they have no effect on me because I cant understand what they are saying. It is a waste of their money to advertise to me. I think that an advantage could be that it is a cheaper way to advertise to a large group. If they could choose to advertise through online area based on location that could be a good way to let the community know about an event. For example if pandora could send ads to only those listeners that are in the East Lansing area, then it would be an advantage to someone looking to target the college kids in the area. I am not sure if pandora allows for this type of selection though. I think that most of the time when ads come on, people change the channel or wait for the option to skip the ad to come up. It is important that the advertisers grab the attention of the listeners right away. I think that there are both advantages and disadvantages for online radio advertising, the important thing for the clients to remember is to grab the attention fast and to keep in mind it may be harder to select a specific group there is not much information gained from online radio. They need to make their ads for the masses.

Student

I think advertising by way of Spotify and Pandora is a genius idea.  However, I know it frustrated me with Pandora when I went to skip songs.  Therefore the idea of advertising on online radio and music providers can only go so far.  I became a member of Spotify when I got sick of the ads and I imagine many other users probably have the same idea that I do, which makes the advertising by way of music media limited.

Student

I use Pandora Radio religiously and I am positive I am not the only one. Pandora is a great place to have advertisements, whether it is a short commercial or a pop-up ad on the screen. The advantages for the advertisement are that they are being seen and heard continuously by the right target audiences. I am originally from Florida and I always hear commercials talking about schools or event happening in my hometown. The main disadvantage I see with advertising on these “commercial-free” radio stations is the fact that people listen to the station for the reason it is “commercial-free”. Most people may ignore the advertisements.

Student

Basically, the beneficial of using Spotify and Pandora advertising is that easy to reach clients because everyone listens radio station when they drive or cook. So, it could increase popularity. However, those have disadvantages if someone who thinks its very annoyed. It may interrupt clients' attention which it can cause negative attention to the adv.
