Analysis of the Internet Usage of Walmart

The brand that I selected from the brand Google Spreadsheet was Walmart. I went through their website as well as signed up for their Email list. I also followed the brand in most of its social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Youtube. It fascinated me that Walmart was able to get many followers in most of its social media accounts. The new theme for Walmart is "Save Money, Live Better".

 

There are several reasons as to why Walmart has a huge social media presence:

 

1) One of the major reasons as to why Walmart has a huge social media presence is because it uses its new theme in a very smart manner in various of its social media accounts which makes customers and potential customers believe that their discount store has some of the lowest prices in the industry and it is the brand's mission to help them save money and help them live better lives (Petersen, 2014).

 

2) Another reason as to why Walmart has a huge social media presence is because it takes into consideration the various characteristics of social media platforms it uses for its social media strategy (Quinn, 2015). Eventhough the strategy or goal of the brand is the same, the manner in which they must be used depends on its platform (Quinn, 2015). This is a very important feature as many brands do not take the time to distinguish between various social media platforms and hence cannot get a massive social media audience (Quinn, 2015).

I was impressed by the website of Walmart. I have sent the snapshot of the website in the attachment below.

There were many features of the website which made me realize that it is a great website.

 

1) One of the features was that the website sold items in many departments like Electronics & Office, Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry, Pharmacy, Health & Beauty, Halloween, Party & Sewing, Movies, Music & Books, Baby & Toddler, Sports, Fitness & Outdoors, Home, Furniture, & Patio, Toys & Video Games, Auto & Tires, Home Improvement, Food, Household & Pets, and Photo, Gifts, & Personalized shop.

 

2) The website showed options of the best prices or cheapest prices for each of the products from these various departments. 

 

3) The wordings of the website are very simple and understandable. For instance, in order to show the cheapest or best prices for a particular product, the brand uses terms like "Best Seller" on top of the product to show that the product has got a discounted price or lowered price. Hence, the key messaging of the brand is very simple and understandable. This will help people from all age groups buy the product from the website of Walmart. This is similar to Principle 1 of the SUCCESs Model which is one of the required readings for the assignment. In the principle 1 of the SUCCESs model, it says that simplicity is not about making the message very simple for the user to understand but being able to communicate the core of the message with an analogy or high - concept pitch. The concept is also similar to one of the other required readings that talk about Communication: the 10 C's. One of the 10 C's is to be clear where it is important that while you communicate any message, you must be specific and not vague about it as it may result in confusion. You must also seperate facts from opinions and you must verify if there are any assumptions.

 

4) The website sells products for both genders and for each and every age group. For instance, in the Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry department, the website sells products from Baby & Kids Shoes, Baby & Toddlers Clothing to Boys Clothing, Girls Clothing to Women's Shoes, Men's Shoes. This will help in getting many users to shop from this website. 

 

5) The website has an option of Tracking Orders where if you shop using the website, you can track your order. It also has an option of Weekly ads which is a great feature to have as it describes any recent advertisements of Walmart.

 

6) In short because the website sells products for various age groups and genders, the website is very simple to understand, and the website sells products for many departments, it makes many users to click on the social media links at the bottom of the website which in turn helps in increasing the social media traffic to the website. It also helps in increasing the number of registered users to the website.

 

Recommendations for Improving the Website

Eventhough the website is great, I feel that the Walmart Services Section consisting of Walmart Money Center, Walmart Credit Card, Product Care Plans, Walmart Pay Section which are placed at the bottom of the website must be placed at the top of the website. This is because there will be many users who may not browse the bottom of the website and thereby cannot see the Walmart services section which is a very important part of their website. However, by having the Walmart services section at the top of the website, we can possibly help to increase the traffic to the website.

 

Email List

 

I have signed up for the Brand's Email list. I was fascinated by the way the brand has designed its Email list where it talks about the lowest prices in its various products by including terms like Rollbacks, Special Buys. This will enable or help the users to go to their website after seeing the Email and check the product in the website. Hence, the brand's key messaging in Email List is very simple and understandable which enables people from various age groups to read the email without much problem. This is similar to Principle 1 of the SUCCESs Model which is one of the required readings for the assignment. Recommendations for Improving the Email List of the Brand

 

Eventhough the Email list sent by Walmart is great, I feel that they can add the various store locations of Walmart in their Email list so that the Email users can also get to know about the various locations of the Walmart stores in the country.

The Facebook page of Walmart has nearly 32 Million likes. Some of the reasons as to why the Facebook page of Walmart has many likes are

 

1) It posts updates daily in their Facebook page (sometimes a couple of posts daily) including the weekends (Moth, 2013). These posts achieve a lot of likes, comments, and shares which means that the Facebook posts of Walmart drive social media engagement (Moth, 2013). 

 

2) The Facebook posts of Walmart cover a wide range of topics that include the special prices of the various products they are selling, donation to a particular society, helping someone turn his/her dreams to a reality, providing relief fund for victims of a natural disaster etc. 

 

3) Recently, most of the Facebook posts of Walmart are videos. This strategy allows Walmart to provide users with the most information in one post rather than overwhelming users with a lot of text. This strategy will help to increase the social media engagement of users as users like to view videos rather than texts in posts, thereby increasing the amount of likes, comments, and shares of the posts.

 

4) Another reason as to why the Facebook page of Walmart has many likes is because it is simple and easy to understand for all age groups. It communicates the main message of the brand which is to "Save Money, Live Better" by sending various posts that include photos, videos about the various products that it is planning to sell. Eventhough Walmart has done a great job in using Facebook, I feel that they can improve their user engagement by having more posts that are related to their services like Walmart Money Center, Walmart Credit Card, Product Care Plans, Walmart Pay Section.

The twitter page of Walmart has 817K followers. Some of the reasons as to why the Twitter page of Walmart has many followers are  

 

1) It tweets updates daily in their twitter page (sometimes a couple of posts) including the weekends. These tweets in turn achieve a lot of retweets, favorites from the users which means that the twitter posts of Walmart drive social media engagement. 

 

2) The tweets of Walmart cover from a wide range of topics like special prices of the various products they are selling, donation to a particular society, helping someone turn his/her dreams to a reality, providing relief fund for victims of a natural disaster etc. 

 

3) Recently, most of the tweets of Walmart are videos. It allows users to view the tweet in a more easier manner than reading text which will help in increasing the social media engagement. 

 

4) The type of messages that are in the tweet for Walmart are highly different from that of a Facebook page post of Walmart. The messages in the tweet are a lot more compressed or to the point than a Facebook page post of Walmart. For instance, Walmart uses Twitter to ask very basic questions of its users (Petersen, 2014). This shows that Walmart has a social media strategy for posting content in various of its social media accounts.

 

5) It has separate twitter handles for Press Releases and other announcements (@WalmartNewsroom), Hiring Initiatives and other efforts involving veterans (@WalmartVeterans), Sustainability-related news (@WalmartGreen), Philanthropic efforts (@WalmartGiving), Public Policy issues (@WalmartAction), Fresh and healthy foods(@WalmartHealthy) which is a good strategy (Petersen, 2014).

1) Eventhough Walmart has many Twitter followers, I still feel that they can increase their social media engagement and eventually their followers by posting daily or 7 times per week rather than just 3 or 4 times per week on an average. 

 

2) They must tweet a lot more regarding the services they offer like Walmart Money Center, Walmart Credit Card, Product Care Plans, Walmart Pay Section. This will increase their social media engagement.

 

3) Sometimes, they must include inspirational quotes in their tweets. This can help in increasing the social media engagement of the brand.

The Instagram page of Walmart has 631K followers. It uses its theme which is to "Save Money, Live Better" just below its account name. Some of the reasons as to why the Instagram page of Walmart has many followers are  

 

1) It uses creative images for a wide range of topics daily. This helps in increasing their social media engagement and eventually their followers.

 

2) It also uses videos for a wide range of topics daily. This helps in increasing their social media engagement and eventually their followers.

2) They can also increase their social media engagement and their followers by including more posts that talk about the services they offer like Walmart Money Center, Walmart Credit Card, Product Care Plans, Walmart Pay Section. 

 

3) They must also include more inspirational quotes in their posts. This can help in increasing their social media engagement and their followers.

 

Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/walmart/)

 

The Pinterest page of Walmart has 115.8k followers and 50 boards. It uses its theme just below its main account name. Some of the reasons as to why the Pinterest page of Walmart has many followers are  

 

1) It uses creative images very smartly talking about a wide range of topics like Food, Clothes daily as well as for promoting special occasions like Mother's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas etc (Moth, 2013). This helps in increasing their social media engagement and eventually their followers. Also, most of their pins link to the e-commerce site of Walmart which is a good strategy as well as to third party sites like Tumblr (Moth, 2013).

 

2) It uses competition where it offers the users a chance to win gift cards which is a good strategy by sharing images of products that help them live more ecofriendly lives (Moth, 2013). This helps in increasing their social media engagement and eventually their followers.

1) Eventhough Walmart has done a great job in getting huge amount of followers for their Pinterest account, I still feel that they can increase their number of boards by adding a few more of its products like Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry, Electronics & Office (as many people use electronic gadgets today). This can help in increasing their followers.

 

2) It can also gain a huge amount of followers if it organizes its boards slightly better as there are seperate boards for Fruit Recipes, Breakfast Solutions, Desert Recipes. It will be better if the above 3 boards were put under 1 board. 

 

Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/user/walmart)

 

The Youtube page of Walmart has around 150,000 subscribers. Some of the reasons as to why the Youtube page of Walmart has many followers are  

 

1) One of the major reasons as to why the Youtube account of Walmart has many subscribers is because the page has videos from a wide range of topics like Jobs, helping a person in need, School, Food, Festivals etc but at the same time making sure that these videos promote the theme of the brand which is to Save Money and Live Better.

 

2) The target audience is everyone as it has videos for all age groups and genders. This is another reason as to why the Youtube account of Walmart has many subscribers.

1) Eventhough Walmart has done a great job in getting a large amount of subscribers for their channel, I still feel that they can increase their amount of subscribers by adding large number of featured channels in their Youtube page. They can do that by adding separate channels for each of their departments like Electronics & Office, Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry, Pharmacy, Health & Beauty, Halloween, Party & Sewing, Movies, Music & Books, Baby & Toddler, Sports, Fitness & Outdoors, Home, Furniture, & Patio, Toys & Video Games, Auto & Tires, Home Improvement, Food, Household & Pets, and Photo, Gifts, & Personalized shop. 

 

2) They can also put a running video about their brand on the home page. This will help in increasing the viewership of the video which will also help in increasing their social media engagement. 

 

3) They must also include a commercial section in their homepage so that the subscribers can see the various commercials of the brand. This makes the website a lot more user friendly rather than just having videos of the products they sell which may make the website a lot more technical. However, by having commercials, even the younger generation will want to see the videos as younger generations are generally more interested in commercials rather than buying products. This will help in increasing the social media engagement and the subscribers for the brand.

 

4) They can also add commercials of celebrities in their videos. This will help in increasing the viewership of the videos to the audience as they will see a recognizable figure talking about the brand. Eventually, this will help in increasing the social media engagement and the subscribers for the brand.
