2018: A Rise in AI, AR, VR, and Blockchain

I believe that 2018 will be the year for major advancements in new technologies like AI, AR, VR, and Blockchain.

I think that Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality will each begin playing bigger roles in advertising and entertainment. An article from Androidcental talked about CES and the advancements being made in VR and AR. It stated that these devices and technologies are making big improvements and that they will be integrating into our lives more. My prediction is that some of the big tech companies, like Microsoft; Apple; and Google will be the leaders in this technology. LG, HTC, and Magic Leap will also be big players.

Last year, Facebook make some serious strides forward with AI and had some big setbacks too. While Facebook had to shutdown their AI system, I believe that they will make new announcements about the development of

With the meteoric rise of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, I believe that the underlying technology behind them, Blockchain, will make some major steps forward in 2018. Blockchain has the ability to secure large data sets by using cryptography. This method makes the data that is secured nearly unalterable, which is ideal for Big Data. I believe that big data processing companies like IBM are going to be investing in Blockchain technology if they haven't already.

As is the case with all years, 2017 was filled with major storylines: Donald Trump's nail-biting presidency, the flood of sexual assault allegations against high-profile figures, and the resurgence of quality investigative journalism being most notable, in my mind. So, in 2018, I expect more of the same. I expect Donald Trump to continue making unprecedented headlines, sexual assault to be at the forefront of news as women become more empowered to share their stories and shift the status quo, and facts-based journalism to elaborate on these two subjects in addition to many others.

There is one thing that touches all of these storylines, however. And that's social media. More specifically, Twitter. I think 2018 will be a monumental year for Twitter as it's solidified itself as the most up-to-the-second source for news and current events. Never has a president ever expressed himself with so little restriction, and his platform of choice is Twitter. Furthermore, Twitter continues to disseminate eye-opening ideas and spark countless social movements, such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, so it will be interesting to see how Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO, and company use this momentum to garner new users and expand its overall importance.

So, as I like to say, in 2018 #thebirdisback

Student

I am genuinely uncertain of what 2018 has in store for us.  The end of 2017 left us with a slew of sexual assault allegations, among many other misconducts.  Thankfully, those began being addressed and handled accordingly.  With Michigan State University's overhaul of faculty involved in the Nassar scandal, it seems that this year may be one for "cleaning slate" and ending the tolerance and normalcy of these kinds of behavior.  My hope is that in any case, we correct the wrongs that have been committed and have everyone become hyper-aware of how intolerable this sort of behavior is in modern society.  Celebrities alike are coming out of the woodworks in support of victims speaking out, even a previous spartan.

Overall I would like to remain optimistic for this year.  A lot of good is coming from those who are brave enough to speak out.  Lets hope this trend continues.

I think 2018 will be a pretty mellow year to be honest. As far as technology goes, we will still make huge advances and new interesting gadgets will come out. I think global warming will worsen in 2018. I also think that tensions with North Korea will worsen as the year progresses. In regards to MSU, we will do very well in sports. With everything that is currently happening with the Larry Nassar case, I think this is the year MSU makes it known that we don’t stand for these types of things, and will make us even stronger as a school.

In 2018, I predict there will be important conversations regarding refugees and their resettlement in the US and around the world. In 2017, President Trump responded to immigration issues by issuing a travel ban executive order. This travel ban separated numerous families in the name of national security. When I studied abroad in Italy in 2016, I volunteered at a refugee center and I remember I heard a statistic that there were 65 million refugees worldwide. 65 MILLION, and that was two years ago. In 2018, I predict the UNHCR will continue to fight for refugees and their rights. One article from NPR stated, “President Trump dramatically lowered the cap for refugee admissions in fiscal year 2018 to 45,000.” It went on to say, “The final tally for refugee admissions in fiscal year 2018 is likely to be closer to 20,000 rather than the cap of 45,000, based on the recent pace of resettlements.” When there are millions of refugees worldwide, I sincerely hope that the US will do their part and take the maximum amount of 45,000 people. I also hope the people in power remember that these refugees are not just numbers, but they're human beings. Each refugee has their own story and the struggles they have had to overcome in order to leave their home countries deserve to be the last of their problems, not the beginning. I predict other countries in Europe will have to overcompensate for the United States’ lack of responsibility when it comes to this international problem. Overall, I predict that 2018 will bring forth many conflict resolution meetings regarding refugee resettlement, and throughout the next year I hope we can make progress in helping refugees.

As we begin 2018, one of my predictions include everyone fitting mental health opportunities into their busy schedules. This all started with "mental health days" going viral on social media in 2017. People started asking their bosses if they could have time off to put towards mental health which has not really been done before. With this being said, our means of accessing mental health treatments will follow the techonolgy trend making it more easily attainable. This could mean instead of making an appointment at an office for therapy sessions, you could access one via live video-conferencing instead. With everyone's busy schedules and need for convenience this alternative still puts mental health as a priority but bases it off of the clients schedule rather than solely the practioners.

I think 2018 will be a year with high speed development of artificial intelligence.Artificial intelligence will start to have a wide range of applications in not only identifying disease, developing new drugs but also contributing to pilotless automobile. This year, artificial intelligence has more possibilities to diagnosis and cure cardiopathy and cancer patients by using screening a large number of digital data from learning and improving algorithms.

The strong general of artificial intelligence makes it ubiquitous. It will be the leading trend in the future, and I hope it will bring us more benefits.

I believe that this year will hold even more technological advances which will impact our world immensily. I think that technology is continuously changing and adapting in order to fit people's particular needs. Hopefully this year we will see medical breakthroughs, as well as innovative adapatations in order to further advance our nation. I also believe that this will be the year that USA will win the most gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics which is held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Bone Marrow transplant, a cure for HIV/AIDS?

I believe in this year we shall have a cure for HIV/AIDS. It has been long coming as numerous research has been done so far with no luck. Generic ARVs have been invented to fight the viral killer disease. In history, only one man has been cured of HIV. Most scientists studying the possible ways to cure the disease wonder if a bone marrow transplant from a donor with a rare mutation can help save lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. Research on this could cost a lot but the end result will be a vaccine. The question how many people in the world have the rare mutation required to create a vaccine for HIV/AIDS? Researchers are working tirelessly hoping that they might come up with a definite cure.

I think 2018 will be a "weird" kind of joke of a year. We are really entering into an era where technology domininates everything. We are advancing our knowledge of our world exponentially, creating new inventions that could be beneficial to our future. We have Elon Musk trying to send people to Mars within the next 10 years for example. What is "funny" or ironic, however, is that we are completely destroying our planet and our environment but we prefer to try and develop new technologies rather than take care of that urgent issue. I believe that this is a trend that is just going to continue throughout 2018. Rather pessimistic expectations, but so far they seem like realistic expectations.

Student

For 2018 I believe that we will see weird occurences with the weather that has to deal with Global warming. Politcally Trump will continue to do things that will make a lot of people question his compentency as the President of the United States. I feel that there will be a continued buzz in the world of cryptocurrency that will cause many people joy and anger. Sporting wise we will see many defying moments and things that will make us go WTF!

For 2018, I think it is a sportive year! The main events for this year are the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. At the same time, I think these two events will bring a lot of money for these two cities because there will be a lot of people going to Pyeongchang and Russia. And I also plan to go to Russia this summer, it is my graduation trip. I love soccer, I think this is an exciting and intense sport.

In addition to the Winter Olympics and the World Cup, there are many sports events this year. You can see this link: https://inews.co.uk/sport/2018-sport-calendar/.

I think I will be much better and stronger in 2018, and this year I will graduate. I hope that I can learn more important things from this class and I can get a good job in future. At the same time, I hope my university will be better in 2018, and all students do not get any hurt in university.

I think that 2018 is going to be an interesting year of even more social activisim and social justice. 2018 did not get off to a great start for Michigan State and women involving the Nassar case and allegations against the Univeristy, but with these negative things happening there is a lot of opportunity to change current practices and improve on the way we handle these issues at both a societal level and on the University level.

Student

The year of 2018 did not start out the best way as expected with women. With issues from our current President, Donald Trump, to being a student at Michigan State, it is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking to view the actions that took place by Nassar. The great news is that this man will be in jail for life, but the other good news from this, was that these women found the bravery to speak out amongst themselves about what has taken place. Seeing these women come together as one and fight to put this man in jail is very important and is what I believe signifies the power that we have! From CNN's article 2018 Will Be the Year of Women, it discusses how women have a very bright future in 2018! From the Women's Marchs, to powerful women leaders, us women are believeing in one another and speaking up for what they deserve! I am proud to be a woman, and I know that from the current steps that we are taking now, nothing but positivity is in our hands!

Virtual reality is making its way into more and more marketing experiences. Hubspot wrote an article called 5 social media trends to expect in 2018, and the one that caught my eye pertained to virtual reality. This article exlained that there is an projected 25% increase in VR units sold. That is an enormous increase. This increase opens the door for advertisers to market their products in ways we have never seen before. VR gives the user the experience of being in a different reality which gives marketers the tool of having the user engage in their product or service. I am exited and curious about how marketers and advertisers will take advantage of the increasingly rapid growth of VR technology.

At the beginning of every year, I write down my crazy dreams and make a long list of all the things I want to do. 2018, the last year of my college life in MSU, I believe that I can set up a detailed work plan, guide me efforts going forward, and make more turbulent change in my future.

As a Chinese citizen, I hope to see that Chinese political model is less in need of structural reform and Chinese dream become more attainable this year. When I look through the prediction and implementation about Chinese dream, president Xi Jinping said that China will comprehensively deepen reform and open itself up to the wider world, and make these factors more complement and reinforce to each other. He creates a strategic roadmap for national rejuvenation that interlinks all ancillary strategies, and resolute efforts to set the country on the path of this Chinese dream. It’s glad to see that Chinese dream today is not really sporadic and more real prospect for the average Chinese citizen.

After being overlooked in its early stages of development, cryptocurrency has recently sparked high interest among investors. At first it started with BitCoin, and then many new currencies made groundbreaking surges with shares often out competing the original currency. Not too long ago BitCoin was banned by Merill Lynch Bank of America in order to prevent further investments, while other "brands" continue to flourish. In 2018 I believe that there's a possibility for cryptocurrency to grow exponentially considering the mass amount of investments people have made and the continued development of the industry. On the flipside, I feel that there's also potential for the whole idea to crash and burn because of the inconsistency and flawed system. It's basically either a huge bubble waiting to burst or it's going to be the hot commodity for transactions.

2018 is a year that gives me the expectation. However, sweat things always involve bitter things.

Because I am Korean, I always get interested in the news about the relationship between U.S and Korea. A few days ago, I read a news about U.S tariffs. It is about the safeguard to hike import tariff in order to save the U.S market. Korean company Samsung and LG was the biggest victim of that alternative. According to the news, both LG and Samsung's washer's price have been increased dramatically and loss big spectrum of American customers. I think as a start of this washer, many products that are made by Korean company will lose its customers in the U.S. and that would strike a blow to Korean representative company.

Sometimes it's easier to predict negative things than positive ones, but here's some good news: humanity is on the verge of completely eradicating polio globally. Will 2018 be the year? Unfortunately, funding for the polio vaccine in some countries is expiring in the next year or so. So we are close, but the threat of polio could continue unless the Global Polio Eradiction Initiative gets a continuation of funding. #vaccinessavelives

I predict that Net Neutrality will continue to be a big discussion in 2018. With many state governments trying to pass legislation to protect net neutrality, it is unlikely that debate over the issue will go away until at least mid-2018. Then, at the conclusion of that discussion, other ethical concerns over internet use will arise. I think more and more people, myself included, are continually concerned about how much our cell phones know about us and I think that will lead to a demand for more transparency on how cell carriers and search engines use the data that they have on their users.

In terms of sports I'm really excited for 2018.  The Winter Olympics are lass than a month away, and the 2018 World Cup starts this summer.  Being a massive soccer fan I cannot wait for the World Cup.  It is hands down the best sporting event in the world (we can argue over that if you want to).  And I am probably going to need those two major sporting events to get me through the year becasue I have no clue about how this year is going to go.  2017 was what some people considered the worst year ever, but it seems like people say that about every year.  But hey, I am cautiously optimistic about 2018 (just like I am for every year).

2018: The Year of Accountability and Itegrity

Socially the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement are taking over and holding people to new standards and challeging the role sexual assualt plays in today's social norms. What about technology though?

It's no secret that Google and Facebook both hold an emmence amount of data on their consumers, but what is unclear is what data they actually have and how they are using it. Apple kicked off the year in an ugly way with several lawsuits regarding their battery. Apparently, Apple has been purposefully slowing down old batteries on their phone in order to drive consumers to purchase new products. Apple has denied allegations of doing so on purpose but has promised going forward to "give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery."

The questions is: Will this finally be the year that people start to be honest. Will we see more integrity from large companies like Apple? Facebook? Google? Let's hope these movements and lawsuits, like the one Apple is facing, is a wake up call for these companies and we see and approvement this year.

I think that 2018 will be a very interesting year when it comes to mergers and acquisitions. It seems as if Amazon is buying every company and really taking over a lot of different industries. In this upcoming year, Amazon is going to decide where to locate their second headquarters. My biggest question related to this is how can amazon use social media and other media to continue to acquire other companies? Is there any way that they can use these social media outlets in order to reach new industries?

Search for Authenticity

As the world becomes more connected through new technology, I think 2018 will reach a turning point. Constantly advancing technology has allowed us to be faster and more efficient at communicating, but we are losing out on real human interaction. This is something that we all need at a basic level. Instead of looking for the latest phone, speaker, tablet or computer - we need to invent ways that we can bring back human connection. Whether this is an invention that mimics the touch of a mother to her daughter while they are apart or it is simply turning away from our phone screens and toward the people around us. I believe we can collectively put our time, energy, and brainpower into something that is innately human. This world needs more love and not just through likes, comments, and emojis.

Convenience in 2018

I believe that there are big things to come in the year of 2018 and beyond. I think that now more than ever people are starting to come together to change the world and advance to bigger and better things. I think Amazon has had a major impact on our mindsets and people are now wanting an unlimited amount of goods at their fingertips available to be delivered right to them. This company has had an impact on many other industries as well. I think this makes a shift in the way we do things and our fast pase needs. I predict that every restaurant, coffee shop, fast food, ice cream store, grocery store etc will be delivering in the near future to compete with business's that can provide goods right to the customers. I believe that there will continue to be a push for healthier foods and cetain ingrediants one can add to burn fat, boost energy, or have anti inflamatory properties. I think that people are coming together to improve our way of life and making things more fast, convenient, and healthy.

The first month of 2018 has already been an emotional rollercoaster. The devastations regarding Larry Nassar have made a huge impact on the Michigan State family and other families as well.  Although there has been tremendous upsets with this situation, the future holds positive change. The resigning of certain faculty positions has encouraged the student body at Michigan State to stick together for what is right. I believe that the multiple tragedies that were told and the people that spoke up have triggered a strong stuednt body. Michigan State students have been reminded of how powerful their voices are. With this knowledge, we are bound to accomplish positive change this year. Whether this change is just a new university president or a new found value of woman's rights, Michigan State is ready to take its first steps in the right direction. In regards to this class, my question is how do you think Michigan State will use advertising and public relations to rebound after this scandal?

This will be my last year in MSU and I am grateful for four years in here. During the rest of the semester, I hope to make a perfect ending for my college life.

In addition, the thing that I'm most excited about is Tesla. With every passing year, Tesla is proving the innovation and practicality to those objectors by releasing the new model of the vehicle. 2018 will become another record year for the company and Elon Musk. Model 3 will gradually increase production, and reduce delivery time for their customers. This so-called entry-level model will open a new market which brings a lot of revenues. On the other hand, the new Tesla Semi and Roadster will also bring us more revolutionary innovations.

As the new year begins, I believe 2018 is going to bring more power for women in society. These past few years, especially the one we just said goodbye to, there have been many talks of feminism, talks from feminists on their beliefs and what should be done, women marches and movements, sexual assault alligations and cases- to name a few. After the sexual assault scandal with Larry Nassar, this has got me thinking about what the future holds for women, and I believe it is only good things due to the mighty force of women and their ability to speak up for every women not only in this country, but around the world. Women in America are only going to get stronger from this point on because as time moves forward more and more women are joining together to be heard, fight for equality, and have better pay in the workplace. This year is going to bring even more chatter and acts from women all over the country who are strong and will not back down until they get not what they are asking for, but what they deserve.

This year (and hopefully the next several) will place importance on ways to improve our way of life, while simultaneously lowering the amount of damage being done to the environment. The Boring Company is currently working on creating a tunnel system that would alleviate traffic in heavily populated cities. When digging takes place, excavated dirt is typically taken to a disposal location. The Boring Company plans to cut out this costly and environmentally hazardous process by attempting to recycle the dirt into blocks that can be used to build. This is just one example of ways to improve life without disrupting the environment. My only question would be how long until more large industrial companies follow this example and begin to switch to less harmful methods of production, despite higher costs?

As 2018 has arrived I think it will be one of the most historical years. Not only in sports like the last couple of years, but I feel like there are many new inventions that are going to come out. The tesla car, which drives by itself, will become a more well known car and more industries will produce this. With that said, the stock market has been reaching an all time high. I feel like in 2018 it will keep rising which will provide more jobs and help the economy. I also think there will be a new social media that will be made which is really good for marketers because it is another way to reach their customers. This year is for sure about to be one of the best yet and I am ready to see what it has in store!

My prediction for 2018 is that there will be a national political pendulum swing, building strength through the year into the November midterm elections. The incumbent party that holds the presidency often experiences loss of congressional and senate seats at the first midterm, the political data seems to suggest a surge in interest driven by extremely low approval ratings of our reality TV president. More balance at the federal level will foster more Centrist ideas, actual negotiation, and better outcomes for all. Additionally, a discipline to a presidency that has crossed uncharted territory through provocative social policy, immigration, trade, and other things that have proven to be quite controversial. This pendulum swing is part of the natural rhythm of American politics. It should make all of our lives better. We will sleep better, breathe easier, and see the dawning of a new day.

I think that 2018 is going to have a huge impact on the food industry. The important impact food has on our health has become more aware to Americans. Documentary’s like “What the Health” came out in 2017 along with the show “Rotten.” People want to know where their food is coming from and what is it in. Millennials want to know how their food is produced and reduce wasteful packaging. I wonder how this knowledge is going to impact some industries? The knowledge of food safety and preventive efforts are only going to increase in 2018. In 2017 consumers were really interested in food and beverages that impact their bodies. For example, foods/drinks that provide energy before a workout, or drinks that promote healthier skin. The demand for these products are predicted to increase in 2018. In addition, in 2018 the use of technology to get food is going to increase. Consumers will use their smartphones to get doorstep delivery rather than going to the store themselves.

Cancer detecting blood tests! Thats right - Cancer detecting!

These cancer detecting blood tests are able to detect even the most fatal types of cancers at an early stage. At Johns Hopkins University they have been experimenting with these tests and have found it over 70% effective while viewing eight various types of cancer. Although this blood test is not quite ready to be used, I believe at some point in 2018 we may see these begin to appear in various advertisements, and hospitals!
