Consider sharing it with your friends.

As you build your own blog and become a blogger it's important to look for inspiration. I am a big believer that its very OK to imitate before you innovate. And in order to do that you need some great blogs to ready and understand how they succeed.

I encourage you as you set up your blog, if you want to base your blog on a certain topic, take a look at the best blogs in that category. Go to Google Blog Search or Technorati Blog Search and type in the category of blog and find some great examples to learn from.

Possibly you already have some favorite blogs? A few of my favorite marketing blogs are here:

Chris Brogan Blog

Moz Blog

Hubspot Blog

So what makes these blogs great? Good information on them. Always providing value. Good insights and thinking. Nice design. Think of what makes a blog great, and then strive to make your blog great.

In the comments please take a moment to share your favorite blog and why you like it. I'm curious to learn your favs. Oh and one more blog I want you to to visit is my blog:

The Digital Bus Blog

This semester keep an eye out as I work to become a more regular blogger too. That's one thing with blogging it takes time. And commitment. It's kind of like working out. You commit to it and you do it. I'm committing to blog at least once a week this semester. Feel free to comment or RT if you like my posts. Cheers.

I do look at a few blogs periodically, but I have never had a large interest in blogging. After creating a style/travel blog for this class, I can now see the appeal behind blogging. I'm not sure if I will continue to blog, but there definitely are some benefits to doing it. I think good visuals and clear content make a blog interesting. The style and travel blogs I read always feature interesting photos with informative but not too long descriptions. I want to apply those strategies to my blog, so it looks organized and concise.

After reading this article I have a better understanding on how to improve on my blogging skills. My blog was about shoes and I have recently been starting to read a lot of blog dealing with thee topic. My favorite website to find new blogs is complex.com. This website has a lot good articles and links to upcoming sneaker realeses and other very interesting articles. The website also has a lot of video blogs and I find those very interesting because you get to put a voice behind all of the words.

There are a lot of blogs around the internet in globally and internationally. As you mention several blogs above, those are the famous and favorable blogs among people. Personally, my favorite blog is my own country's blog which is Naver blog. In this blog, most of people in Korea upload thier pictures, comments and everything that helps the others to look up. I can find anyhting that I want to know such as social, political, economical, cultural issues and other entertainment issues too. After I made my own blog through taking this class, I realized that the blog is very helpful and useful toward many people and myself to develop my own skills of using technologies and knowledges.

Student

When it comes to blogging, I have don't find it that interesting, becasue I do not prefer writting. I only know about Vlogging (video blogging), this concept seems more interesting to me and a place where I can show my true colors, and it seems more personal to me. Maybe I feel this way because I don't like to write, but I am willing to try this blogging out for myself, it might take me some time to get use to, but just seeing all the other bloggers out there, it's going to be hard to bring myself up to their level.

I’ve never used blog before this year. I have just recently gotten active in my blogs or profiles. This is very great advice for me. It will be really helps me to build a better blog. And I just followed the steps to create blog and the write down. It was very useful to me. I hope my blogs will get better with practice and I am excited to see what my blog.

Student

I think at first the whole idea of blogging seems intimidating, but then in reality there are so many different people that use blogs to share similar ideas and thoughts and hope that one day someone else will read and be inspired. I've always thought of blogging in my freetime, especially in personal subjects where most people don't have experience or know how to talk about. I hope that one day I can really pass on knowledge and help others through my experiences and knowledge. I think you're right, it's like getting out of shape is so easy- its a decision you make and you are the only one who can do it each day. I think getting in a habit of it and a habit of how to write to make others feel comfortable and want to read your work is key. Thanks for the advice!

To me, Best blogs are not exist in anywhere in internet world. I can say good bloggers because, there are many regulation and concept to say which is best blogs. Even though I see a blog that called by someone, "Best blog" but that is not impressive to me at all. So the condition that people call best blog, is something a blog that makes satisfy what the person want or give impression to the people. To being good and more develop to "Best blog" should gain some what people can feel sympathy not trying to be divided.

Student

I'm pretty new to blogging. I have blogs that I read on a regular basis and am waiting for the time to get more posts on my own. I like the idea of blogging for business opportunities. Having the chance to show what you know on the web and get followers on your own in an area of business can get you pretty far with people you haven't met yet.

Student

I've never used blog before this year. I am positive that I have read information probably online that was from a blog once or twice in my life but honestly this class has really encouraged me to seek out blog information. People like the ones above dont bother me, everyone is just trying to make a buck and for some its a living. That's just the nature of online use today and for the most part blogging is very credible and fun to read if you can find people that interest you and seem to have the same mindset as you. This class has helped me connect with my favorite sports teams which has given me more up to date information then ESPN etc. which I enjoy. Blogging is still new to me and will take some time for me to get used to giving my opinion where millions and read it but at the same time it is fun and exciting to think of the amount of people that could ultimately see what I write.

Even as this semester comes to a close I realize that I am not well-educated in the world of blogs. The only blogs I frequent are fashion and celebrity related, such as Perez Hilton. However, I do not have respect for people like him. Those blogs exploit other people for their own gain. They do not contain any original material. This class has exposed me to the knowledge that meaningful, insightful blogs do exist. I am grateful for this knowledge and from now on, those are the types of blogs I will seek.

A blog I used to follow religiously was run by one of my favorite authors growing up.  The author is named Libba Bray, and the name of the blog I can't even remember anymore.  She would write a range of things, from hints about her upcoming books, various chapter or quote leaks, to anything going on in her daily life.  What brought me coming back to her blog every single day was her use of humor.  She was absolutely hilarious, and therefore entertaining to read about, even if she was only talking about what she ate for dinner that night.  To me, my interest is peaked and held through humor, and Libba Bray certainly did that.  Once I finished the series of books she had written that I liked, I found my interest in her next books waning and I fell away from her blog.  I would be interested to see if it still exists.

I have just recently gotten more active in blogs, and some of my favorites are TreeHugger, which I want to take some ideas from for my own blog, and The Clymb's blog. TreeHugger is more along the lines of environmental news, events, and did you know articles, which is a good educational way to be involved in an area I would really like to be a part of in the future. The Clymb is probably my favorite just because it combines all aspects of the outdoors, evnironmental awareness, outdoor recreation guides and tips, stories, and more. They are both informative and fairly entertaining, and I'll cite this post about how to enjoy alcohol while backpacking or this post giving tips on pooping in the woods. Overall I'm beginning to enjoy blogs more and more as I find ones that I feel connected to. I really hope I could make mine successful but the hopes aren't too high.

Hyperbole and a Half is my favorite blog of all time.  It is all short stories and they are all hilarious.  I found this blog when I was a senior in high school taking creative writing. The blog is a great form of entertaiment but it also reminds me that writing is a great thing to do in your free time which is what make blogs wonderful. Blogs are very visual yet they require some writing as well.  The author of Hyperbole and a Half actually stopped writing for awhile because of depression and she got a lot of support from all of her followers.  Other blogs even wrote about/to her and I found myself hoping that she got better as well.  Now that she is back writing I am really excited and I tell everyone about the blog.

Since I only following blogs that are related to sports, I would say Functional Self Defense is my favorite blog. As a person who is interested in martial arts, I found this blog very useful and functional. It has lots of different categories for different types of people and it explains its every blog very clearly. Also, it uses lots of different resources to support its information, which makes it reliable. Another great thing about this blog is its visual explanations of moves and techniques. I think this is a great way to show your techniques as a self-defense blogger. I really enjoying following this blog and this blog is the main reason of my own self-defense blog.

My favorite blog is actually a Youtube video blog. She is a beauty vlogger from New Jersey named Megan. She has two- a beauty vlog and an everyday vlog. Because I love makeup, fashion, tutorials and advice, I find her blog probably the most interesting one on the web. She gives out great makeup advice, does amazing makeup tutorials and does honest product reviews. I buy certain products because of her. She does an awesome job of explaining everything and she makes you actually want to watch her channel. I think that a great blog involves keeping content interesting and that is exactly what she does. If you are into makeup, hair and product reviews, I definitely recommend her vlog.

What I did, when I was building my own blog, I try to take what I like from the other blogs. I don't mean copy but try to do something close to it. Some blogs have some really cool stuff and they do different format for mobile formats and have integration with mobile OS. Those large blog sites have small companies behind it and they will have programmers and system admins dedicated to their blog on staff. I think that makes it harder to compete with those, they would have alot of people submiting post and refheshing the page multiple times of day.

Student

It really helps me to build a better blog.

Student

Great advice! Since starting to blog on WordPress it has been a challenge for me (a really good one). Looking at others blogs and commenting on them helps me become a better writer and blogger myself. I have been reading blogs for a while and never really thought of starting my own but after learning that I really already was micro-blogging with my Twitter account it didn’t seem so intimidating anymore. Sure, I don’t consider myself a great writer or blogger yet but by observing others work and communicating with them it encourages me to keep writing and influencing others.

Before beginning this class I never really read many blogs to be honest. I tend to search for information on news sites. However, as I started my very own blog, Pigskin Pro, I began searching for more blogs out there on the same topic, the NFL. I found myself once again leaning towards news sites to find my reliable information on such topics and it happens to be that my favorite blog is the Official Blog of the National Football League. On this blog you will find plenty of updates on the NFL and from a variety of experts on such topics. This blog is great because of the content and because of its affiliation with the NFL. I would highly recommend reading this blog as well as my own when looking for interesting insight on the NFL.

Student

I never really followed blogs or had a blog before I joined this class. I've learned a lot about blogging so far this semester such as how to set up a blog and how to make it appealing. I've noticed that blogs that are visually appealing are the best blogs. A blog with an appealing header instantly makes me want to read it. Also I agree with the imitation for inspiration. Blogs that I find interesting help me to write about the same topic because its something I'm into. I'll be able to talk about that topic because I actually like it.

Student

Before the class, I do not have the own blog and i have no idea how to build the blog. when I learn the information in this class and search on google, i knwo to create a blog. i think there are some information should be in blog like your life photo you want to share or you think some interesting story you want to tell your friend you can post on that. however, there are still some inforamtion you can not post on your blog like your money, your secert, or notoriety. you should identify what should and should not. the blog should have the clear information you want to tell people. and  I agree with appeal, appeal is useful in advertising and  essentially that is what your doing on your blog. that will helpful that.

Student

in my opinion, the best blog must have the clear organization of the page to help readers find out the articles easily. At the beginning, a good blog must learn how to arrange their blog and add some beautiful elements to attract peoples' eyes. You can post some blogs which are quote from other authors, and also need to write some own feeling of some topic or interesting things. Sometimes the funny pictures also can help you to get more followers.

Student

I like reading blogs, but I don't necessarily have ones that I routinely follow just yet. If anything, I follow the What Should We Call Me and How Do I Put This Gently blogs because they're relevant to my college life at the moment, and I like humor blogs. However, a majority of the blogs I read are what my friends have posted links to ones that they enjoy, and I'll read them. I was particularly interested in reading blogs and various posting during the election back in November, but I did not have any specific ones that I was following, since I was trying to learn about the whole spectrum and see different perspectives about the 2 candidates. Also, I agree with the immitation for inspiration idea, because if I see a blog I like or am interested to read it, then it makes sense to model their ideas or writing style to attract the same audience to my own work. In regard to design, I think the content is more important, but I think there needs to be something eye-catching on the website, or else you may lose the interest of the reader if they're just quick glancing at the page and not taking time to really read through it. Simple and clean design is better, since what the purpose of the blog is for is the content within it.

Student

I think it is imperative to have a visually appealing blog. I know what catches my eye while searching the inernet and I try to do that on my blog as well. There are many conponents to making a blog worth reading and the two main points for me are good informaton and good pictures to inforce that learning and reading. Having a simple title or heading draws a reader in as well. I personally love blogging, so also try to learn from other bloggers  and minic something i think would be successful for mine.

Blogging has never been something I have gotten into until this class and I find it very appealing what you can do and say. I have a very strong personality and it's nice to be able to have your own opinion without to many restrictions. Although it is still taking me time to get used to blogging, I am very interested in this and believe that it could help me in many ways. I agree with appeal, appeal is huge in advertising and essentially that is what your doing on your blog isn't it? We'll I believe so anyways, and You hit the head on the nail, people remember the last thing they see or so I've learned in communications throughout my college career. So, if you have a catchy blog, odds are your already ahead of the rest.

I definitely think it is most important to have a visually appealing blog. I am very into artsy photography and cool, eye catching blogs. I also read my moms occasionally because she writes a lot about our family and I find a lot of her posts very humerous. I think my blog could use some glaming up because right now I don't even like to look at it.

Student

I have been reading The College Prepster my enitre college life. I love her posts and I love how real she is. Carly is very open with her audience is keeps her blog current and entertaining. She gives fashion advice, career advice, life advice, and writes about her own personal experiences. She also is great at creating original images for her blog and uses lists often. Her blog also has an option to receive a weekly newletter and daily e-mail about her posts, which increases her reach and exposure. I love reading her blog daily and following her on Instagram and Twitter.

Student

I just follow the steps to create the blog, to be honest, I am a not usually write information my blog, however I concern about other person blog. My favorite blog is from Russell peter, it's updated several times a day. He is my favorite person who can describe the world situation so funny, I also enter this website to collect his information and video. Last week I was just went to the theater. He is so interesting. He can say anything about the social problems.

Student

I belive the visual aspect is just as important as the material or information being given out on a blog. I have a tumblr and have had one before I even took this class, so I had some previous bias. If I come across a black and white, plain font blog, I most likely will click back and try to find one more visually pleasing. To me, this means the blogger cares about the overall message being sent out to their viewers. They have taken the time to engage and they want their readers to want to be on this site. I usually assume the information is more legit as well. There is more overall effort put forth and I apprecaite that to the fullest.

Student

If a blogs design is visually pleasing it increases the chances that I read on. For this reason, I think design is second most important after a blog’s content. One of my favorite blogs for example is Dulce Candy. I like this blog because it incorporates some of my favorite things: fashion, travel, and beauty. This blog has a great design, it is easy and simple to navigate through. It also has many pictures, so for outfit inspiration or makeup tutorials it makes it very easy to follow. Similarly, Cupcakes and Cashmere, a blog containing a lot of the same subject content is another favorite. This blog has been around since 2008 and now ranks in at #8 for one of the most influential fashion blogs of 2013. These blogs are perfect examples of how you can fake it until you make it, all of the content is based upon personal style and opinion or ideas that were inspired by other blogs.

I don't follow any specific blogs for anything but entertainment. When I'm looking for information I use google and click on what I think applies most, which is often a blog, but I don't follow any serious, informative blogs. WhatShouldWeCallMe is funny and easy to follow, which is why I like it. It's the only blog that I regularly look at because of how relatable most of it is to my demographic.

Student

I do not really care about blog's design, as long as it has a good information. To me fancy design blog does not seem professional so even it has all the good and truthful information in it, I still do not read it. My favorite blog is like newspaper looking blog becuase it looks professional and I assume that it shares a fact.

Student

I am not a frequent blog-reader and never had an own blog until now. However, a big passion of mine is fashion & lifestyle. And here and there I find myself browsing on fashion and lifestyle blogs on the Internet. I love getting news and information about the latest fashion, about hair styles, models, recipes, events, concerts and so on. In addition, I really like looking at blogs of people coming from different countries to experience their culture and fashion styles. It is always fun for me to get inspired by others.

I really like blogs that are rather kept simple, modern and minimalistic with a design, which is easy to understand. I like bloggers, who have a simple but smart, entertaining, catchy and appealing style of writing with headings that evoke my interest to read the whole post. A German blog I really like is http://zeitgeschmack.com/ - a modern, young blog, always up-to-date.

Student

One thing I'm very passionate about is music. That's why I spend a lot of time on blogs seeking for new music. Looking at the hip hop culture, my favorite blog is OnSmash. There are various posts a day of the most important artists, and additionally some insiders' tips and exclusive music. The great thing about it is that it always is the fastest blog to post about new stuff, and, beside the music, topis like sports, lifestyle and fashion are also featured.

"its OK to imitate before you innovate" - I hold a similar life philosophy "Fake it until you make it". Although this may be competely unrelated here is a TED video I found to be inspiring on this topic. TED Video

My favorite blog to read is Perez Hilton.  He always has relevant and honest information.  On the off chance he made a mistake, he'll always print a retraction and fix it.  I also follow him on twitter to get information faster, even if all I can get is headlines.  As you said in class, headlines are extremely important.  He also has a seperate mobile page which make it easier for the reader to access on the go.  I mostly read entertainment blogs and wiki pages.  When everyone is able to add information, the content can get very specific.

Student

Thanks for sharing some of your favorites! One of my favorites is Lauren Conrad's blog. She's always posting great recipes, advice, and fashion features that I love to follow. Doing things like "Friday Favorites," consitantly every friday and "Tuesday 10," are why I continue to follow her page.

Student

I like this post a lot, but I'm left wondering where the line is between business and personal blogging? Should they ever overlap, or not at all?

Student

I am not one to be extremely intimate in a social media site, for me I more look at these sites for fun and entertaining content. I find it most interesting when jokes, or funny anecdotes are posted, rather than personal and serious comments. I think that is what makes my blog personalized though, for me I would rather blog about things that I'm passionate about, instead of pretending I'm interested in politics or world issues. I'd rather my blog be sincere and worth reading for those that are interested in the topic than a fake post about things I don't know enough about to be educating to the public.

Student

I realized while taking notes from the readings, that everything I was writing down had techniques my favorite blog has. I visit 'dlisted.com' daily because it's updated several times a day, keeps me updated on current events (mostly pop-culture), but most importantly is hilarious and very relatable.

Student

Althugh i am not a huge blogger, there are still some bogs i enjoy to read. i am a big fan of sports so i like going onto www.espn.go.com to check out all the sports scres and highlights on the day. Blogging is now more interesting and fun do sit around and do.

Student

Before this semester started I never did any blogging, and I did not visit very many either. I was never closed minded towards blogging, and I’m actually very interesting in becoming very familiar with it this semester, and beyond. I like to read about entertainment, news, inspiration and electronics. Those are a few of my favorite categories and I’m looking forward to developing my blog this semester.

Student

That really is a great statement "its OK to imitate before you innovate" because a lot of good ideas come from what somebody else has done. Fashion trends are a good example of this idea. Many people have common articles of clothing but some people choose to alter the original piece and change it into something more unique that fits their personality. Thinking of the blogging world in this aspect makes it easier for me to grasp the idea.

Student

I've never blogged before this class. After looking through a few blogs I searched on google, I found it appealing. Being able to find people who talk about and share similar interests with you is pretty cool. The first blog i searched was baseball related. I am a big fan of the tigers and found a nice blogging site with some interesting articles, especially since the playoffs are starting. I also a read a blog about the Tigers in the playoffs in 1972. The article had a lot of good facts about the series and it was intriguing. Being a fan of history, it was nice to read about something that provided historic knowledge about the Tigers. The blogs only provided one picture from the series, I thought they could have put a few more in there to really give the reader an idea of what it was like. Having read a blog on the digital bus, it is important to provide stimulating visuals on your blog. I also was interested in reading about hunting. I recently started to bird hunt and took a liking to one blog in particular, mainly because it provided tips for unskilled hunters on how to have better success.

If anyone is looking to make more of a humerous yet informative blog, and also wants to "imitate before you innovate" I would highly recommend going to Cracked and checking a few of their posts. Insanely funny and strangely informative from start to finish. They also have some podcasts and other neat little things that might inspire you to do a little extra with your blog. Also MSU has a really awesome newspaper called The Black Sheep that has similar things. Hope this helps anyone!

Student

I think it's great that you are a believer in "imitate before you innovate." I have never been a blogger before so seeing how other people blog first has been a great way to learn what to do. I learn best when I see the examples of other because then I learn from their ways and I know how to create them myself. If I did not look through other blogs first, I would have had no idea what I was doing. I am still a newbie but looking through these sites and attempting my first blog has all been a learning process. I hope my blogs will get better with time and practice.

Student

I don't pledge loyalty to any one blog nor do I check any regularly. The most interaction I have had with blogs up until this class was through Pinterest. On Pinterest, you are shown pictures that come with snippets of what that link will provide. Often through this I find great recipes posted on blogs, alongside crafts. One blog I have found all over Pinterest is The DIY Village. It is full of fun home improvement and holiday DIY posts, and being a college student on a budget, DIY is very often the best route to go.

Student

The blog that I like and read the most is Bleacher Report. I think that Bleacher Report is my favorite blog because of the format, which includes just about every sports category and the ability to pick your favorites among them. Along with the convenience of the blog which allows me to get push notifications on my phone about all of my favorite teams and players. The other aspect of Bleacher Report that makes it my favorite is the constant updates and breaking news. It seems like they are always the first to report any major happening in the sports world and that is what I'm looking for in a sports blog/website. The fact that Bleacher Report is so customizable to the reader/user is one of the major reasons why it is becoming one of the most frequented spors blogs.

Student

I really haven't ever really been into blogging but after reading different students blogs in this class, it has inspired me to look into other blogs and delve deeper in blogging myself. I really like how you believe that it is okay to "imitate before you innovate". I think searching around to find inspirtation and getting ideas of what I enjoy to read is good strategizing for my own blog. I want to continue to learn more about blogging throughout this semester and I am excited to see what my blog and others blogs turn into!
