Consider sharing it with your friends.

As you know in addition to teaching ADV 420 at Michigan State Unviversity, I run a Fan enagement startup called Fantelope. We don't have MSU signed up yet, but hope to for next year, so keep an eye out.

Yesterday we had an event at the University of Detroit Titans. It was a Metro Series pep rally, soccer game, and it finished with Hoop Night in the D. We had some cool Titans Pride t-shirts to giveaway and we put them on the Fantelope app for 50 points.

Detroit Mercy Titans Fantelope Giveaway

At the event we had a steady stream of people who came to our booth, downloaded the app and earned points. The fans earned points by sending Tweets, checking in at the event, watching a team video and more. Once fans passed the 50 point mark they could redeem their points for the t-shirt in the app.

Titans Pride T-shirts

Fans enjoyed the experience, and our results were good. The Titans herd grew from 155 fans to 255 fans. And for the one day event fans earned 12,000 points and redeemed over 5000 points for t-shirts. So that was a huge bump in usage and redemption.

Fantelope Herd Statistics after Fan Event

The lesson learned here? Our fan engagement platform works very well. Instead of just giving every student who walked up a shirt - we got them all to download and join the app - giving us their email and mobile number - the ability to market to them in the future for upcoming Detroit Mercy Titans sports events. And the app also had the students and fans do some good things, like Tweet about the event, and check-in to verify they were there.

Detroit Mercy Titans Fantelope Giveaway

All these fan engagement activities were motivated by the cool t-shirt giveaway. And the big lesson for me is that having a giveaway that sports fans can earn on site will move the needle for any fan engagement app.

Fantelope and the University of Detroit Mercy benefitted from this fact yesterday. And a couple hundred fans used Fantelope to win a very cool t-shirt and earn points toward upcoming larger prizes avaible in the app like a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card, free tickets, merchandise and food vouchers.

Fan engement and stadium experience apps are coming. Michigan State University of one of the best sports environments in the country for college sports. Enjoy it. And when Fantelope does come to your campus, please tell your friends that you know the guy who started it. #GoGreen #JointheHerd

This is a very effective way to atract users to your startup. What I enjoyed most about it was that you didn't just give users a prize for recognizing your company, you made them get invloved first. This is a way to get students engaged in their school and a very effective way of giving them an idea of what ou are trying to accomplish with Fantelope. Many companies that set up a stand or a tent that give away free gifts just for walking up. That doesn't do much good for your business as they still have no clue what you are about. But this process gets them involved and I think it is much more affective.

Student

I think this is a very effective way of marketing your company! It provides the fans a chance to win a free gift, while promoting your company and having you witnessing the enjoyment of these interactions at the same time. As stated, this is a very good strategy for college sports teams to use epsecially here at Michigan State. I can see your company being used in the NFL, as well as the NBA one day!

Student

I think this was a great idea. By giving an incentive for people to download a simple app, in reward for a t-shirt its a no brainer. Obviously ill download the app, it takes 5 seconds. I am not surprised by how well this worked. I would have also set up a Snapchat Geofilter with the school mascot wearing the exact same t-shirt, that way you would get more brand awareness of the T-shirt, leading to even more downloads.

Student

This is a great and easy way to get people to actively engage with the brand through the app. People are more likely to engage if they are given an incentive such as the point system that led to a free t-shirt and can further more lead to incentives like gift card, free tickets, merchandise and food vouchers. The statistics go to show that the event was successful in generating new fans and users. Having them provide their email and mobile number gives you the ability to market to them in the future. Also, by having them talk about the app via social media has the ability to reach a vast amount of more people who weren’t even there by basically getting free marketing from users. It’s a great idea to have an app dedicated to fans because people want to participate in something they care about and sports culture is a huge thing on many college campuses. Michigan State is the perfect target for this app because of the large athletic following at this university.

Student

This was a great idea on how to engage with participants and spread awareness of your app. If you had just given a shirt away no one would have paid to attention to the app and what you were trying to do. I know whenever I am given something free without having to do anything I will totally not know what the shirt was for unless it says on the shirt. It seems to have worked very well since you almost doubled your herd size as well. You can't argue with results.

Student

i think this is great idea about make  a apps for fans, this should be working well i think, give people who have interesting to know and watch sports arround them, also i see they can easy to find news on this app, just like my favorit basketball app, NBA game time, it tell me game time , news of basketball and buy tickets on this app, hope this app come soon.

Student

Great idea! A friend of mine and I went to the Lions game the other week, and they had something very similiar. It was a tailgaiting app called Flask and if you downloaded their app and listened to them explain the app, they gave you free swag. It was a good idea to get people engaged and have something to put in their hands to remember your company.

Student

I think that this app was a great way to get more fans involved in getting their t-shirt. I like how it your table wasn't just a free tshirt table, and that the fans had to get points in order to get the tshirt. I think it is an excellent strategy in that now you have the fans email addresses to communicate with them. With the app the fan have more mortivation to spread the word about a cool even that they are going to.

Student

I think this is a really cool event! It was creative how you asked users to download the app and actually do thing in order to get promo. We do similar things like this at my job for sparticipation and AOP. We ask people to like our Facebook page or follow us on twitter before they get a promo item. Before taking this class, I had never heard of Fantelope before. How will your app market itself to college women specifically?

Student

I think the way you implemented this strategy is great because you were getting fans involved and giving them something in return for them using your app rather than just handing out free things. This is an amazing way to make sure the students were actually using your app instead of just downloading it to get the free shirt and then deleting it right after.

Student

This is an awesome way to get students involved and traffic on the app! The incentive was perfect. This reminds me of my job working for the Detroit Pistons. The marketing team put in place a team of 30 girls with intention to attract a male crowd and sign them up for exclusive clubs; Women are targetted as well but men ar still seen as the major audience at NBA games. It's completely free to join these clubs that we sign people up for, but it gives us specific information on who that consumer is i.e. full name, email, phone number, zip code, gender, and birthday. Over the last year the results of this have been an additional 300,000 ticket sales.

Student

This activity is great to pulling more consumers to sign up for this fans engagemernt. Because they can earn this free T-shirt which will attract more people to come to this event. And this is a good opportunity to communicate with your target audience. Fantelope is an good idea to promote sports brand, also can make people increase awareness of this app. It can help a lot for your business.

Student

It seems like nothing is more powerful than a cool t-shirt. People really love tangible items that they can obtain for "free", especially Campus Pride-related clothing. However, nothing pairs better with givaways than exciting and engaging personalities. Having been to a few outdoor concerts and events lately, I find it notable to add that these fan-engagement-style booths are typically manned by hilarious and comfortable men and women that make the experience that much more enjoyable, without leaving guests like they were just "sold" or "pitched" on something. I find it so easy and entertaining to engage with brands and physical brand representatives when they're nice, honest, and funny!

Student

I definitely think this is a great way to market your company. Customer engagement is a salient way to insure that your consumers come back and interact with your company. It gives a face to an otherwise faceless company. It gives a personality and is remembered better. Customers love when they are rewarded for engaging in a certain company. They are more likely to have a positive experience and utilize your product or service.

This event sound really interesting to me, I am lookin forward to see this activity can come to Michgian State University. Michgian State University has the great atmosphere. People will really enjoy this great activity. I will downlad this App on my cell phone. And also I will tell my friends about this one. And also I will some of friends to this activity when the day comes.

Student

Sadly, when I tried to get in contact with my past internship Chat Sports, there was no response. I wanted them to connect with you to help both apps. They seem to be losing out and already have not continued their campus ambassadors. They did not even have a system as great as the one you pulled off. They just gave us ten sunglasses to hand out when someone downloaded the app. One, that was not enough, two they gave us it as a challange not so much as our campus as a team. I think if they did something like you did that they would be in better shape with usage of the app. I hope you continue with you app and even include facebook live, Chat Sports has been doing well on Facebook Live and I believe you could too at events such as the one you did. My question to you is, How would you get universities like MSU to download the app? Will you try the t-shirts or something else?

Student

It sounds like a great interactive model to attract people because most people are attracted to free stuff. Downloading the app for something, t shirt in this case, is not a hard-to-do job. The question is do they keep the app or do they get rid of it as soon as they leave the scene? Even if they delete the app right after leaving, this promotion will increase awareness and get people talk about it.

Student

This type of promotion is far better than just throwing out free t-shirts. Many people, like myself would forget entirely about the company and what they were trying to accomplish by giving shirts away.  The engagment from the students helps future marketing from their numbers/email, and also creates steam on their social networking sites. I found it very interesting that the statistics were available.  By doing this, tracking what users do and do dont, make it a great tool for improvment purposes.

Student

I think that Fantelope is a unique idea, especially that it provides an incentive to possibly win even bigger prizes than just the t-shirt. As a student, I have plenty of t-shirts, and many businesses give them away, but it is an effective marketing tool, because kids are going to be wearing them, asking each other where they got that shirt, and it'll probably stay in their closet for the years to come. I'm wondering though, are you able to track the current number of downloads? How many people have deleted the app or just downloaded the app just for the free shirt? Would possibly opening up a tent near off campus tailgates be beneficial in terms of marketing to the target market as well? I think it could help near local restaurants or stores on gameday or the day before game day. I'll be sure to tell my friends about this!

Student

What an awesome concept that's come to life! I would love to see MSU a part of it soon! I'd certaintly get the app and be a part of the fan engagement if their were perks like free t-shirts as I'm sure many other students would too. What motivated you to create the app?

Student

I think that Fantelope is a cool idea. Ik alot time free offered things are tshirts but that can become very old very quickly I know that I have a lot of clothes already. However tshirts can be a great thing because like me people wear them to go workout or in spaces with larger amounts of people which makes us walking bill boards and get people interested in the brand we're representing. The word FREE will gain alot of attention quickly to a large amount of people espcially students if thats the audience thats trying to be reached.

Student

Fantelope does a great job pulling in consumers. I know from personal experience walking around campus here at MSU that free Tshirt handouts really do draw people in. It also makes them remember your company more than they would if they were to receive something such as a flyer or company pen. So, that was a good marketing plan to get people interested in the company. It was also super cool that in order to win a Tshirt, you had to download the app. At the booth you got people to download the company app and earn points right then and there. It makes things seem quick, easy and rewarding in the consumers mind. It also then gives you the opportunity to contact them via email, etc. I know I would download an app for a free Tshirt…who wouldn’t?! Seeing the success at UDM, I think Fantelope would do great at a big 10 campus like MSU’s, especially because sports are such a big part of this school!

Student

I think that fan engagement experiements like this are great to motiate people to sign up for something or engage in something so they can earn the free stuff they want. T-shirts and food are great examples beause most college students are drawn to both of those and if all they have to do is sign up for something or download an app to get the free item. A group I am in actually had an event last Monday where people had to sign up for grubhub in order to get the free items or free food.

Student

Fan engagement is a good way to communicate with your target audience. For consumers, promotion is a strong motive for target audience to download apps and share the app to their friends. But at the same time, you can increase more consumers while doing this kinds of events. And also, you can see obviously data for you to measure campaign success or not. However, while you doing this kinds of events, you need to do some research about where your audience locate. Or you will be fail at the first step.

Student

I think implementing these fan engagement strategies are crucial to the success of a business. Providing fans with incentive to download and sign up (T-Shirt) gives you the opportunity to acquire valuable information such as their personal info (email address, name, phone number) to further inform them of your business. Huge sport oriented campuses like Michigan State University are a great place to use fan engagement to your advantage. Adding further rewards such as gift cards, free tickets and food vouchers will also help to keep people engaged in your app, as well as your business. Fans can also help spread awareness of your brand by tweeting and checking-in to your event. Rewards for them, benefits for you. Win-win situation.

Student

Fans are the support system to any big team, It's great to see their energy being utlizied to grow the fandom! The app also works out great becuase it doesn't have an age limit, every age can be a sports fan and want to engage. The turnout to your event looked great and giving people an incentive show up really helped with the results! What other type of events do you plan on doing online? It would be cool to see a big online picture contest from the most excited fans. I want to keep up an see how much your idea takes off!

Student

I thought this was a really cool idea. I know that I personally am always attracted to free stuff at events. Even if I don't even really like the free item, I think its the concept that I can have it if I want. Getting the app is not a difficult obstacle for this shirt and thats probably why it was so successful. I'm curious how many people who downloaded the app for this shirt will keep the app and how many will immediatly delete it. I'm sure a good chuck will delete it, but this would still be succesful. Many people will keep the app and those were people who probably wouldn't have downloaded the app without this opportunity.

Student

I find Fantelope very interesting. This is a company that is finding ways to connect with its auidence or customer by getting them actively engaged in the company. Everyone responds to giveaways well, especially for sports teams and events. By having a Tshirt giveaway to pull the consumer in, Fanetlope is already succeeding. Fantelope makes it easy for someone to participate in and earn points with. It has several options that reaches out to several different social media sights so while attracting customers and fans, they are also providing themselevs with advertising in a positive aspect. By having the fans post about the team and company as well as the app, the fan base, in my opinion, has a really great chance of expanding quickly and becoming an extremely popular sporting fan base company. Has Fantelope reached many schools/universities outside of the Michigan area? Does the company plan on expanding through out the country for all professional teams, colleigate teams as well as highschool teams, or do they plan on selecting a particular auidence and persuing them more directly?

Student

Fantelope is an amazing idea to be able to promote sports brand. I think first off giving an incentive is a very smart way of promoting you business, as well as creating more advertising for the sports events you are participating in. I think that as you grow sports teams will sought out you for pormotion. I think that is awesome to be able to promote your business with a free t-shirts. Everyone loves free things and if it is just a post on social media post or a location checkin for the customer, and that is easy. The nice thing for you is that you are reaching hundreds of people with just one post, creating this amazing image for your business.

Student

I think this idea is a great example of how engagement can be maximized. Instead of just giving away t-shirts, fans and users were fueled to earn the free t-shirt. Not only did they download and join the app but they also gave valuable information by doing so. Now you have their email address and mobile phone number to use in future marketing and targeting. There also was incentive to use the app, instead of just downloading it and joining to get a free t-shirt there was a call to action to use the app and get enough points for the t-shirt. Tweets and check-ins at the event not only promote the event itself but also create good relations between Fantelope and The University of Detroit Mercy because both mutually benefitted. I think this type of fan engagement would be very successful at Michigan State!

Student

I think that utilizing fan engagement is huge. By offering someone something in exchagne for the information and engagment you are able to better grasp their attention. I think that this event at the University of Detroit Mercy was a huge success and it sounds like the fans really worked "hard" in order to aquire a tshirt which works well for both parties. It works well for you becuase you are helping expand a fan base while simultaneously aquiring important information that you can use later on, and it works well for them because they are rewarded. I hope that we do something like this at MSU becuase I think it would be a great way for students to engage with something different and new.

Student

I think engagement event is good idea to connect with students that interested in sport, they only need to take few minutes to download a app and give their phone number and email, then they can get a free t-shirt so easily. This engagament event definitely should come to MSU since here is one of the best sports environments in this country. So that every students sport fan can receive a free t-shirt, and also motivate the event in different social media platforms.

Student

The idea is genius. For people our age to download an app and Tweet something in order to get a free shirt, that's a no brainer for us, that takes us like 10 seconds and we get a free shirt out of it. And then you get a lead. You get an email and phone number from each and every one of these people which you can use to advertise to directly down the road. It makes so much sense. I love it!

Student

I think this is a great interactive model to increase awareness of your app. Instead of just handing over a free t-shirt you made them sign up and register, and then tweet about it, advertising to their followers. The only problem I could see is people quickly deleting the app after recieving the free item.

Student

Student

I think this is a really good idea. This engagement is very effective because you are not just giving out T-shirts to people who just walked on your booth. Since people shared their information and downloaded the app, they will definitely engage with you in the future. Therefore, if you open the event at MSU, you will have more audience because MSU has many spartan fans. All you need is bigger booth and talented people to engage with people.

Student

I think that is a really good and nice idea. I like that it got the studetns involved and that they even got something out of it. Also at MSU I think it will do even better becuase MSU has 50,000 students which is more than Detroit on its campus so you can reach more people and a ton of those students here are extremely interested in sports. You could also partner with Coach Izzo before the basketball season or have a tent at the Izzone Campout to target sports fans.

Student

I also strongly agree that this engagement model is communication-effective and very creative. Presenting app users with rewards and t-shirts definitely seemed to have helped draw people's attention in the app and the engagement model through various activities conducted at the event. Absolutely looking forward to see Fantelope fully operating and promoting events here on msu campus.

Student

I think this is a really cool idea!! Having people sign up for the app before receiving the t-shirts helps with the recent downloaders to use the app and become more engaged. Bringing this app to MSU would be a great idea in my mind. This app could go very far due to having such a large engagement for sports as well as simply any school spirit. Any college student loves free things and this app gives out free things with just a little bit of engagement, which should not be hard for many students.

Student

This is a very smart fan engagement model. Having fans be rewarded within the app for interacting with your app and basically promoting it for you is incredibly brilliant and will help its userbase grow quickly. Well done!

Student

This is such a fun idea. I really like how it engages different fans. I think having people sign up for the app and use it in order to get a t-shirt was a smart way to get people to register and get interested in the app. It gets people talking about your product and they get something out of it as well.

Student

This is an awesome real life example of user engagement. I enjoyed reading about this event because of how you were able to get the students and fans to join the app and had an incentive for them to do so. The incentive made it a win win for both parties and you could each walk away with something. I don't know much about sports following but I think this app sounds like a great way to get fans involved and I'm excited to use it / check it out when it reaches MSU.

Student

This is a great way to get college students engaged with your app. College students love free stuff, and are willing to do things to get it, so this is a brilliant way of getting the apps name out there and getting people to use it. I worked with a company called EatStreet and we used a similar tactic to get people to download and engage with our app. We found that a lot of people end up deleting it right after though, because they just wanted whatever we were giving away. How will you continue to keep people engaged so they don't delete your app?

Student

I love this idea! It's a great way for fans to engage with the app and spread the love for their team. Using the sign up on-site option is great to ensure that students actually sign up. On top of the signing in aspect, which shares the news about the app and the event. I also like the idea of being able to win stuff just by posting about my team. I can't wait for the experience to come to MSU!

Student

This is great! It reminds me of my job at Victoria's Secret where we constantly are talking about loyalty. Customers may not want to sign up for our app, but when we say a free panty is included they are all for it. It is simple and easy to engage fans of the brand, you just have to think of what's in it for them. Could this app be for other people or events other than sports, that could be a growth point.

Student

I think this is a great way to help MSU students involved with it. I believe that most sports fans will pay attentuon with this kind of social media concept. , so it would be cool to earn points and prizes to do what they are already doing. I like this idea because it isn't just about the app, it is creating a sense of community and appears selfless and wholesome which is attractive for the business. I myself love giveaways at large events and would personally be attracted to the tshirts and techniques used. This is a good way for both of us to know more about a culture and sports spirt.

Student

I love this! I am starting an org and we will def do this ! I love this Fan engagement because it shows how word of mouth is very effective. I belive experiements likke this are beneficial to the organization but also helps build confidence when communicating with others.

Student

This is great! It's awkward for people to say no to doing something when they walked up expecting something free. I've signed up for a lot of things in order to get something free, but in the end I almost always delete the app/emails/text alerts the same day. How are you able to retain these people who participated the other day to get the t-shirt?

Student

Fan engagement is essential, especially in the United States and the university pride. Involving students with social media is a grat idea and they love giveaways. This is an innovative business model that will attract a lot of college students.

Student

I think this is a great way to provide incentive for people to do what you want.  College students love free stuff so this is brilliant.  Now that you can send them promotions, how will you set-up a feedback system?  When the feedback system is set up, what will it track?
