Considering I am studying advertising I found all of the tools and sites helpful but Google Adwords did stick out in my mind. I found it to be the most helpful digital marketing tool with what I am studying. With the customizable and helpful tools the site makes advertising quick and simple. To me Google Adwords is definitely a must for any company that does want to be successful in the digital marketing world. I do plan on using the New Media Drivers License to help me get into the world of digital marketing and advertising.

Overall, I think that the favorite tools that I've learned is the basics of blogging. I really enjoyed learning about that and that is something that I will take from this class and continue to use. I also liked the Google tools, I had no experience with them before this year and I found them very intersting.

Student

I think that Google AdWords has to be the best tool that I have learned about in this class.  I think that it will be the most useful throughout my career with digital marketing.  The Google AdWords will definitely help me later in my career to help tweak a campaign to the best of my needs.

Student

My favorite ting i will take away from is how to use Google adwords,  as well as learning about all f the tools that google has to offer for free. Before this class i had little info on Adwords and was not familiar with it. Now I can easily operate it and learn more. I also really like learning about location based services and how businesses can use them. I am also much more familiar with social networking and how advertising/marketing affects it.

Student

I have really been enjoying Google+...especially with the launch of the brands pages. I will take my newfound knowledge of Google AdWords and Google Analytics with me into the field. This course has really made me think about a digital career I have always really enjoyed using social media for personal use, but I have really developed a passion for it as well as witnessed how such small thing can have such a huge impact on a company.

Student

I think that my favorite new tool that I learned while taking this course is Google Adwords and the important of SEO and SEM when planning out online advertising. I had not learned much about this previously and after reading through the articles, guides and tutorials I am beginning to understand what everything means. It will be long road ahead to learn more about the process, but I think I am on the right track. Taking this class has opened my eyes to new potential careers that I had not looked at before.

Student

My favorite tool that I've learned about is Google for Advertisers. There are so many great tips and resources with everything from Insights for Search to Keyword Tools and so much more. There are tools for just about every aspect of online marketing, making my job that much easier.

Student

I agree with Stephanie.  Before taking this course I only used Google as a search engine.  I was really impressed to find all of the additional tools and advice that google offers to advertisers.

Student

I've been somewhat familiar with Google +, AdWords, and Analytics for some time, but I've enjoyed broadening my horizons and further exploring the flexibility and functionality of these and other SEM/SEO tools and sites. As much as I'd like to continue blogging, I simply don't have the time right now... although I may resolve to revisit “Brew & View” in 2012. I don't know where I see myself this time next year, but wherever I wind up I hope to contribute to marketing research and planning. I know I will be better off having taken this course.

Student

The most interesting part to me is just seeing the power and capabilties of all the programs and servers behind social media websites and servers for Google. The first day of class the Gooogle speaker who maentioned how they could predict trends in society based on serach results. The theory of that is absolutley crazy to me just thinking about how much poer and knowldge about internet users and what they are doing and searching while browsing the internet.

Student

This course has taught me so much about social media, but I think the biggest piece I'm taking away from it is how incredible Google is!  After exploring Google Analytics and Adwords, I am amazed at how user-friendly and simple it is to create and manage an effective advertising campaign.  Even a small business with an extremely small marketing budget can make online advertising work for them.  On the other hand, a very large firm like Nike or Microsoft could use the Google AdTools the same way a small business does and get the same kind of results - just on a much larger scale.  I am so glad I tinkered with the AdTools before I took ADV 486.  I believe the knowledge I gained about Google will help me immensely in my future advertising courses.

I feel most excited about social media marketing. I learned so much from this course about how to use social media to help a business or organization grown and expand its marketplace. I already noticed the amount of business, companies, products, brands, celebrities, etc. that use social media to help reach out their consumers, viewers, or fans. The ony thing I never noticed was the overall incentive of just doing so. By creating something as simple and free as Twitter, can do wonders for any businness or organization. Twitter users can stay up-to-date with what your brand is currently up to or promoting. They can always retweet, quote or even tag your brand helping you branch out to their followers or fans, thus expanding your viewership and creating more brand awareness. As I move towards the professional world, I will always keep in the mind the power and positive effects of using social media networking and marketing.

Student

Through this class, I learned many social media tools that I didn’t even know including LinkedIn, Google AdWords, Foursquare, etc. However, my favorite tool is LinkedIn which makes me easy to connect in the business and people. Starting with making profile is one of steps to involve in business world and LinkedIn exactly provides those tips. Also, I liked creating my own blog. It is fun to update my daily life and any interesting stuff. I found some useful blogs and I felt blog can be powerful tool which provides good information and tips using the experience. Many tools that I learned from this class, I hope to use it well in business field.

I think the textbook has been the most useful part of the class so far. It's good to see academic-level, case-study based material on the subject of Social and New Media. It's likely that Meerman Scott's book will be one of the very, very few books from my college career that I'll refrain from selling back. It'll serve as a good reference no matter where I end up. I feel like so far in the class a lot has been somewhat review, with the obvious exception of the SEO and SEM lessons. I'm excited to see what putting it all together looks like when we attack our final projects in just a short while.

Student

One of the great marketing tools that I feel I have gained is the experience and knowledge of Search Engine Marketing (SEM). I was oblivious of how Google implements this into their website, but now see the opportunities this type of marketing has for all companies and organizations. This type of marketing is effective in the sense that it allows the companies using this medium to see results. This is important for companies when they evaluate ways to reach their audience. This medium also allows companies to change the SEM marketing with the click of a button. It truly is a great way to advertise and I am excited to explore it in detail as I begin my professional career.

Student

Learning how to implement proper SEO and SEM has been the most important thing I have learned in this class. Having those skills will make finding employment much easier after graduation. A lot of the jobs and internships that I have seen are requesting that you have some knowledge in that area. This has had a large impact on my career path. I am very interested in finding a position that will allow to us the skills that I have learned and allow me to further develop these skills. It would be very beneficial to me later on in my career since my ultimate goal is to be an entrepreneur. More than likely I will be taking additional social media courses offered at MSU so that I can have additional understanding of SEO and SEM.

Student

To be honest, I'm actually a little bit surprised by the content we've covered so far and how much I've gotten out of this course. Although I already had profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Tumblr, etc. I still found it really interesting that you could so easily get metrics for YouTube videos. Furthermore, I knew next to nothing about Google AdWords and the other Google tools and I still think that the tool suite has a lot to offer. I'd probably say I feel the most excited about those just because of how much there is to learn. But, Twitter is definitely still my favorite subject we've covered thus far. I would also agree with the thought expressed by my classmates that today, a LinkedIn profile really should be mandatory for graduating college students given how easily it lets you network and stay connected with people in a professional setting.

Student

The faverorite marketing tools I learned is location based marketing, it is a marketing medium yet to be fully explored, even for the big players. Through the past couple of years Facebook is trying its location based tool such as Facbook Places, and Google is trying to maximize profits through similar tools like Google Real Estate through Google Maps. Once fully developed, the convinience and efficiency we can benifit from those tools are huge. Imagine that we can read ratings, suggesion and specials on location while driving in a car. Imagine we can get promptly notifications once we are close to where our firends are hanging out. This can bring evolutionary change to the industry of marketing.

The background and information I picked up certainly provide a lot of insights to help me excel in my future career. I can adapt many of those info too well plan my marketing campaign for my job after finishing this course.

Student

My favorite thing to learn about this class was probably using google adwords, and learning the importance of tagging things for your websites. I guess as a casual internet user I never really understood how certain websites or blogs built up their traffic, or how intricate google adwords is. I am definitely going to be applying those skills in the future when I develop my own websites.

Student
I liked being forced to use social media sites that I have never used before. Before this class I had never used tumblr, 4square or LinkedIn. I really liked using tumblr because its a website that is different from Facebook and Twitter. I never thought I'd like using tumblr but I was wrong. This class has made me want to explore other social media sites that I wouldn't have considered using before. I also really liked the strategy aspect of digital marketing. Things like search engine optimization and creating unique URLs for websites is very interesting.

I must say All the lessons from digital PR, blogging, social media, google tools, and beyond have been extremely beneficial to my marketing skills. Before this class my knowledge of online marketing was limited, at best. The lessons have allowed me to use new tools, while forceing me to think how these tools can be beneficial from a marketing perspective. The hands on experience I have gained from this class will undoubtedly carry over into my future career path.

However the tool I am most excited about is blogging. Blogs allow for immediate and direct conversation on focused topics. No matter what field your career path takes you blogs, when used correctly can be a MAJOR asset to marketers. Marketers are able to instantly access opinions and thoughts of customers. This is a Goldmine, Jackpot if you will. With instant access to this information you are able to make efficient, knowlegable, decisions that are pleasing to consumers. I fully plan on becoming increasingly involved in blogs.

Being a sophomore I cannot say for certain that getting my New Media Driver License means I will go into the field of digital. However I can say it has sparked major interest. I hope to be able to take more related classes in the future and further my knowledge in this field.

I think that the most important thing we've covered is location-based social media and internet marketing. Location-based digital marketing opens up a seemingly unlimited number of possibilities for interacting with consumers and developing a positive relationship between brands and consumers. There are many ways to reward people who take part in location-based marketing promotions, as well as ways to get the people themselves to spread your message for you, and to like-minded, targeted groups. It also offers marketers a chance to push the envelope as far as how promotions and advertisements are carried out / displayed and has the potential to manufacture untold amounts of conversation and buzz about your brand or product.

Student

Maybe not many people talked about that but I think the most useful tool I learned in this class is Youtube Channel. Here is the thing, Netflex has change the media industry once, and Youtube Channel can change the industry twice. Just think about that, if you can do everything by computer, do you still need TV? The truth is, computer and internet can do more and more things than before, think ten years, or maybe just five years ago, we used phone to call some one, we used radio and MP3 to listen music, we watched shows on TV and watched movies in theaters; and right now, several softwares and websites can intergrate all things together to computer, we can use Skype or Google Voice for phone calls, we can use iTunes or other softwares to listen music, and right now, Youtube channel allow people watch shows and movies through internet. Although this area is not popular right now, but I believe it can change the world some day in the future. I am glad I already learnt that

Student

I found out AdWord assignment to be challenging, but rewarding. I think understand AdWords will definitely help when entering the work force. I started that assignment completely clueless of how easy it is to make the actually ad. Google has great tools that allow you to check keywords and figure out a price. Learning these hands on skills is more beneficial then memorizing and being tested on terms, like I have to do in some other advertising classes. I also found our class "text" book to be very interesting. Unlike other actually text books I will keep this book to reread.

Student

I think the most useful tool I learned is the location-based social media. Customers’ information has been more and more significant nowadays in digital advertising, and location-based service is providing marketers the information they need. With the information of the customers' location, marketers can make more specific strategies and collecting more directing response. I think the game-like characteristic can give marketers an opportunity to be creative and make the users have fun with them. Location-based service is still not widely used in social media advertising, I feels like it would became a significant part in digital marketing in the future, and I have to say I am learning this skill right now.

Student

im not sure what im going to do still, but from what i've learned in this class its definitely something that can help me in whatever field i choose to go into. Everything is going digital and for companies its important to embrace it. The things i've learned with SEO can help any company optimize their web and social media presence. Getting my new media drivers license doesnt necessarily mean ill end up in the field of digital but its a valuable skill to have.

Student

I have to say that one of the most useful lessons I will be taking away from this course is on search engine optimization and Google AdWords. I understood very little about the topics prior to taking the course, and now I’m coming away with a full understanding of how exactly they work. Not only will I be taking useful tools away from these two lessons, but I’ve also grown to have just a greater understanding in general for digital marketing and social media. I definitely believe this will impact my career path. I’m interested in a greater variety of career options now that I’m more educated in the field of digital. Whether I end up in the field of digital or not I’m sure the lessons I’ve learned so far will be put to good use in one way or another.

Student

I'm still unsure what I'd like to do in the future, but whether I go into digital marketing or not, this class has certainly been beneficial.  Even if I never use my knowledge, I will at least have a better understanding of social media, blogging, Google, etc. and this means that I will better understand technologies that continue to develop around us. Also, I feel that this class has made me a better consumer of social media, which will benefit me no matter what I do for a living.  For me, the most exciting thing we studied in this course was blogging. I had a lot of fun designing and conceptualizing my blog along with updating it (although I only continued that for about a week). This was probably my favorite because it's something that doesn't necessarily have to be utilized on a professional level and I can continue to blog as long as I like whether or not I pursue a career in marketing/PR.

Student

I feel like taking this class was a very wise decision because of all the tools I have been introduced to that will allow for me to have a broader range of possible careers after graduation. I am still very uncertain about what I want to do with my career, but being able to utilize blogs, adwords, and location-based social media as a result of taking this class will without a doubt play a major role in securing a job for me when it comes time. I am most excited about the possibility of working in a creative environment, and more importantly at my own pace. Due to the increasing role the internet plays in social media, more jobs allow for their employees to work from home, and demand much more relaxed working conditions. I feel like it would be a shame for me to not go into a field of digital after learning so many neat tricks, but I want to take my time getting there and possibly merge it with a social marketing campaign.

As someone who had never strayed far from Facebook, I was fortunate enough to master many other social networking sites throughout this class.  Social media, particularly social networking sites, get a bad perception in the business world that they are used only be teenagers and have no place in the real world.  The truth is that social media is the future of business.  If your business is not on Facebook, Twitter, etc. then you are behind the competition.  This class has been important to me in that it has taught me the value of social media in the real world.  Social medial can be used as such a valuable tool for businesses that has never been accessed before, and in ways that we will surely see in the future.

Student

I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to take this class. I think it's great that it is offered at MSU and I hope students continue to be encouraged to take this course. I don't have one specific tool that I am more excited about than the others we've learned in class, but I am grateful to have a general knowledge in social media. I hope to own my own business one day, and I know that a background in social media will really help me launch my ideas into an actual business. Moreover, as I get ready to graduate it is comforting to know that social media if used properly could help me find work and network with potential employers.

Student

I think the social media that excite me the most is location-based social media. I think the game-like characteristic can give marketers an opportunity to be creative and make the users have fun with them. In addition, I think GoogleAdwrods is also effective way for digital marketing. Learning how to set up GoogleAdwords as well as how to develop an effective campagin will definitely help me to find a job after graduation :)

Student

i would have to say that throughout this class i am greatful for learning all that i have learned in this class. Every part of this class is valuable and useful to almost any communications degree and job that comes with it. my favorite part was learning about blogging, i personally didnt know that there was a technique to blogging, or anything that involved social media. i would love to get into the digital world when i look for a job, i think its what every company is looking for and it can become a great asset to any employer. i also didnt know google had so much to offer, props to them for being what i beleive is the leader in the digital world.

Student

Both of my parents own there own businesses and I have worked in the past in building their logos, drafting their mission statements, and handling their online presence. This class has showed me just how much more I can do to make their online presence online stronger and reach more of their customers. This class has also showed me what I can do for myself in order to help me get a job.

I especially appreciated the lesson on blogging, because my thought was always that Blogging isn't for me, but I realize now that blogging can be for anyone.

I also enjoyed learning about all of the tools that goog provides to its users and small businesses. I can't wait to see what google has in store for the future.

Student

This class definitely opened my eyes to see a lot of different new media tools and how they inpact people's lives and the market place. I am most excited about vlog (video blog). Since I am a fan of a few Youtube channel, and they use their channel to make blogs about their special interest: cooking, make-up, ukulele, piano, and so forth. It is exciting to know that blogs have a huge impact in the market place. I personally think, the video blog can do much to establish relationships with customers. A lot of companies Youtube channels seem to be too 'official', which lacks of personal relationship and connection. A lot of grassroots Youtube stars are individuals who make sincere videos and communicate with viewers and take their requests and respond to them. The trust they build in the Youtube world is strong enough that may leads to buying process.

Student

With a basic college student insight into the world of social media, this class has provided me with a more in depth focus on social media marketing and how it can be used for business.  The most useful topic I learned about was definitely search engine marketing, a tool I had no previous knowledge on.  I loved learning about all of the Google tools and particularly Google AdWords.  Prior to this class I understood that social media was the key to new media marketing, but I wasn't aware of how to track social media efforts to see what is working and what is not.  With AdWords you can see how you can further improve your advertising campaign to get more clicks and increase sales.  Since I am going into the field of Public Relations, I believe search engine marketing is a useful tool to use for clients and their businesses.  Although I don't plan on focusing my career path solely on digital media, I believe the knowledge I now know with my New Media Driver's License will put me a step ahead in the job market.

Student

There has been so much I learned from this class. Before this class I barely knew how to use each social media site and how to use search engines and how they can work for businesses. The most important thing I will take away from this class is search engine optimization. It plays such an important role in marketing and the internet. It is something that I will take advantage of knowing about.

Student

This course gave me a chance to dive and explore lots of social media concepts.  I'm most excited for the foundation it provided.  The digital realm is evolving rapidly and I think that this course has made me better prepared.  I think I finally get Twitter.  In 5-10 years, when the lines that define mediums have blurred even more, this foundation will be even more valuable.  I'm not sure that this has altered my career path, but I do feel that it has provided many advantages.  I enjoyed learning about Google tools and the many ways they can simplify implementing online strategies.

Student

My favourite tool has now become blogging. I used to use Facebook, Twitter, and now in this class, I learnt about Google+, Google Adwords, LinkedIn and so much more. Among all these, blogging is my favourite because it gives me more space for personal opinions, and I never knew that by planting keywords every hundred words would help me promote my visibility in the online world. I never knew that there are also people out there watching the movements of the bloggers, and bloggers in their turn, may have a big impact on a certain brand or company. This is all very exciting news, which definitely make me want to work double hard on my own blog. Although getting this New Media Driver's License doesn't really mean I am going into the world of digital, but I do know that it is going to benefit me hugely no matter what field of work I ended up with, because the digital world is everywhere now.

Student

After this course, I know how influential social media could be. Everyone has his social media, but he does not know how important it is to create his profile and utilize the social network. As a graduate student, I like LinkedIn the most. I found it very useful to create one's resume and show one's background and skill. And I know there are many great companies actually use the network to find someone they want. Though Taiwan is not yet using LinkedIn popularly, creating my profile taught me a lot. Having social media is important. However, what matters is making good use of it.

Student

Before this class the only using Facebook, now I have insight into so many different social media marketing tools. I would say that my favorite tool right now is foursquare. Since the location based service assignment I have been using foursquare none stop and have found great deals. This is personally my favorite social media tool at the time, but my favorite trick I learned for marketing would be all the free tools Google offers. I would of never known any of those tools if I never took this class. I think my NMDL puts me a little ahead of my competition in the advertising field because social media and digital marketing is becoming so important these days.

Student

I think the Google tools are the most impressive part I learned from this class. Before I took this class, I thought Google was just a company provides search engine services. However, after I completed several Google related assignments from this class, the aspects and functions of Google such as Google Adwords and Google Alerts are really impressive for me. Google also gives me a chance to understand what is SEM and SEO and how to actually process them for an advertising campaign. I really enjoyed what I have learned about Google from this class.

Student

I never used any social media marketing or online tools before except Facebook. I learned so many kinds of  tools in this class such as Google+, Google Adwords, Foursqure, LinkedIn, etc. My favourite tool that I learned is location based marketing. What I feel the most excited is about location based marketing is the ability to geo-target advertising messages to mobile consumers continues to advance, especially as check-in services like Foursqure, Loopt, and Gowalla gain momentum and build small but influential audiences from New Media Drivers License, really helpful. What I like the most is Foursqure, and interesting facts about it is the first-ever Coach Men's Store is giving out free cologne to the first 200 people to checkin on Foursqure. Yes for me, I do getting into the field of digital from New Media Drivers License.

Student

My favorite "tool" by far is blogging. Before this class, I never realized how important blogging is. I always thought of it as a way for self-absorbed people to talk about what they like; or for angry people to vent some. After doing all the reading and research, however, I see how critical blogs and bloggers can be to organizations. I will definitely carry blogging with me into my future PR career.

I have yet to decide if I want to go into the field of digital. There are so many things you can do in the PR field, and I want to try some out (via internships) and find what I'm really good at and enjoy doing. I doubt it will involve a lot of social media, because I am still very anti-social media. Who knows though, my future might surprise everyone and I might have to take my blog down.

Student

I really enjoyed learning about many of the aspects and abilities of Google, such as analytics and adword.  I never considered Google to be anything more than a search engine.  I have used what I have learned towards my current research as a Graduate Assistant and have also taught the professors I am working with how to use Google Adwords.  Twitter was something that I had no interest in until this class as well.  I now use Twitter to get real time updates on sports and news.

Student

LinkedIn, hands down, has been the most important thing I am taking away from this class.  I had never even heard of this website until walking in the first day and now I am on it as much as I am on Facebook or other social media websites.  It has become my favorite way to get in contact with company's and present myself in the most professional way possible.  I normally use social media as an escape from reality or a way of keeping up with friends, but never as a professional aspect to my career.  With my personal development in the job markets, LinkedIn has become my talking point and basic online resume when I am in discussion with companies.  I have received a great deal of compliments with its overall layout and I see it as an easy way for me to market myself and constantly update my resume for all to see.  I think it is an ideal place for me to continue to prosper and hopefully push myself further into the digital marketing path.  I do not wish to pursue the field of digital as a long-term career, but I cannot see myself not working with the digital field in nearly all aspects of my career.  Digital media is becoming the most popular source of advertising and it is where the future is taking us and I wish to utilize it, but  I do not want to be confined to its boundaries by any means.

Student

Highlights for me were setting up my blog, Google Alerts, and the basics of SEO.

The first really opened my eyes how important and easy it is to promote oneself. As of now, I really struggle to invest some time to build the blog, on my mental laundry list, it's never the priority and that has to change. I hope that I can build it during my next job, as I will work in ICT4D, which is worth sharing and which, I think, others will be interested in.

The second helps to keep on track with organizations that are interesting for me but that are not yet social media savvy enough to reach me. So I just seek information about them.

The third gives me comfort: Basic social media marketing is not at all rocket science. If you stay user focused and up-to-date, a few basic tips and tricks are all you need.

Student

What appeals to me is definitely google adwords and google alert! It is really nifty and useful in a comfortable and covenant way. Social networking websites like google-plus, facebook or twitte are all too daily-life thing to us which may show some creative but still similar features. The brand new experience with adwords was really exciting. We become join in a marketing process just by free tools online without big investment of propaganda or communication with top public media. It is so customer-based marketing when using tools like google alert or analysis to dig who buy your products at where and what your customers really like to know. I think from this, I came to know the inner meaning of this course.

Student

What I have enjoyed using the most is FourSquare. I was shocked at how much I started to use it, and how much I really liked checking-in places, reading reviews, and using it to really help me figure out what I'm going to eat or do. As far as what skill I have taken that will be most applicable for my career, I think was learning how to really re-vamp a brand image using social media, namely blogging. I never really saw the value in blogging, but it can do so much for a brand, just to have your name show up higher on Goolge searches, create a relationship, and I think that blogging is an invaluable tool that will make me marketable in the job search.

Student

In the beginning of this class, I didn't really know about entire internet marketing society. Taking this class is to me that gives numerous information which can stay better in social world. My favorite assignments from this class was building out Google+. Google+ looks more clear than other social networks, and more flexible. I had an another assignments which I really enjoyed, this was LinkedIn profile, because I could meet people who have same mind, not only everyone.
