Does this list surprise you at all? How many of these accounts do you follow?
You might notice one thing in common with all these accounts: they all are big brands or widely known organizations. That said, not all big organizations have wildly popular Twitter accounts, which begs the question: what makes these accounts unique?
Why do you think these accounts are so popular? What are they doing right? What can we learn from them?
I can’t wait to hear what you think – and look forward to engaging with you in the comments this week!

I follow six out of the 20 companies listed. Seeing the high number of followers in news organizations does not surpirse me. I am someone who loves knowing what's going on accross the world, and I HOPE alot of people feel the same way.. What I am having a hard time understanding is how some of these brands are attracting so many followers. What is so great about following Samsung Mobile, UberSocial, Ramalan Indonesia..etc. I was not expecting to see some of these names. Before opening this I would've guessed companies like Nike, Apple, Amazon, Target..etc. were going to be on the list. I'm just surprised some of the top followed companies aren't from the retail industry that promote deals and sales through Twitter.
As I've said in the past, I think Twitter is an extremely powerful way of advertising and marketing a company, and great job to all companies that have made this list. To have so many followers, they are clearly satisfying peoples needs, making people happy and ultimately attracting people towards there product(s). All companies above obviously have strong PR departments that are seriosuly benefiting them in the Twitter game.
I was very surprised to see UberSocial and Ramalan Indonesia on this list because I have never heard of either of them. The accounts from this list that I follow are The New York Times and SportsCenter. I looked at few of these accounts to try to figure out what makes them so popular and there are a few things I have noticed about them. They all incorporate lots of pictures and videos so their tweets are likely to catch your eye. Instead of trying to fit too much information into a tweet, they often use a catchy phrase and then include a link to a longer story or article. They tweet often and use hashtags. Also, these accounts interact with other accounts in their tweets. I think all of these things should be used by organizations who want their Twitter account to become very popular.
Some businesses who may not understand the people who make up the Twitter community tend to make boring, wordy tweets. They don't tweet often enough and when they do, they neglect to connect to their twitter audience with hashtags and handles. I think these businesses can learn a lot from the accounts on this list when it comes to pictures, videos, links, phrases, wordiness, frequency, hashtags, and interaction in their tweets.
I would say that most of those make sense except a few surprised me. For instance, with YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter so high up I would think that Facebook would be right up there with them because it is another popular social media site. On twitter I follow CNN, ESPN, and the New York Times but I am familiar with almost all of the rest of them. I think that what they are doing right is just staying as current as possible. People want to be in the loop so all of the sports and news accounts can help them do that. As for the social meda accounts or MTV I would think it is becuse they are constantly updating to keep up with latest trends. We can learn to try to focus more on the present and stay as current as possible on our accounts.
Wow, that list is really interesting! The only things that I really follow that I can think of off the top of my head would be YouTube, CNN and The New York Times. Those are the ones that I follow the most, if not daily. I really love looking at the news and following recent articles. However, there were some on here, as far as ranking goes that I was really surprised by. For instance, I thought that Facebook would defintely be first in line, but for some reason it's number 12, and YouTube is the champ. I was surprised because I hear so many people talking about Facebook all of the time, I know so many people use Facebook on a daily basis, and I would have figured it would have ranked number 1 in this case.
I think these accounts are so popular because they must have a strong social media presence, and networking system. They are able to brand themselves accordingly, which allows them to get a lot of foot traffic as well as search results. I think we can learn that in order to have the strongest brand or network, we really need to focus on getting our names out on the web. Not just for the sake of having our names known, but if we have an important message we want heard, and hopefully we do, we want to be able to let people hear it! These accounts are great tools to look at as far as goals, or maybe even examples as to how we want our networking to grow as we move into the professional world.
There are a few things that I found interesting on that list the stood out to me. It made me realize just how popular sports are in our society being that there is at least 5 of the top 20 twitter accounts having to do with atheltics or sports media. I follow 6 of the top 20 which to me seemed low being that they are so popular. I am not surprised that the big brands have a massive following but there are a few brands that I thought would make the list. I was surprised there was no consumer packaging goods. These popular accounts must produce engaging content to obtain such a following. I''ll have to check more of them out.

This list does surprise me. I do not follow any of these 20 accounts listed and don't feel the need or want to. I am surprised that these accounts have such a large following. I understand that they are large corporations with big names, but what do their Twitters give to their followers that make so many people want to follow them?
I especially don't understand why people follow other social media site's Twtitter accounts, such as Instagram and Facebook. It seems that for the most part their tweets can be linked back to their own social media sites. Maybe this speaks to Twitter as a social networking site and as a global phenomenon. If people are even coming to them to get the news from other social media sites, they must be the best. They have the easiest, most intuitive format for getting quick information and I think people appreciate that. You're able to get a glimpse of information and only if it intruiges you do you seek out more.
