One of the challenges of teaching a class like this -- or working in digital marketing -- is keeping up with the latest changes in our industry. Nearly every day, some major announcement comes out that is important to stay up on. Our clients expect it!
Yesterday, Twitter announced a major change allowing users to post multiple photos to an individual tweet - or to tag individual users in photos. While this is something other social networks have allowed for a long time (think Facebook), it's huge news for Twitter.
You can also now tag people in photos:
Tagging people in a picture makes conversations around photos fun and easy. And tagging doesn’t affect character count in the Tweet — you can tag up to 10 people in a photo and still have all 140 characters at your disposal, making it easier to connect with your friends. If you’re the one being tagged, you’ll get a notification. You can adjust notifications, as well as who can tag you, in your Settings.
Here's your challenge: think of some creative ways you could use this new Twitter feature for one of your (future) clients. How might this be useful in marketing? Be creative!

I have never used Twitter as much as the other major social media platforms. However, with this new update I believe I will start to use it a lot more. Although, I understand why Twitter limits its tweets to only 140 characters it has always frustrated me. This is because I sometimes could never fit in my entire thought along with tagging my friends. To further improve this I believe they should allow you to tag as many people as possible for any tweet not just ones with photos of friends.
I love the new Twitter update, especially because Twitter is the main social media webpage I use. It would be fun to tag celebrites with fans in photos to make celebrity endorsements more personal for fans. The same can go towards sports teams. If a frachise calls out a fan with a picture their day could be made.
Its not a HUGE change that will shock the users or something but it is definitely interesting and it will attract more users. I think it will open more doors for comapnies to share their products and they don't have to write like 500 words just to explain their products. They can just post pictures and it will deliver the message to their customer. I will probably use this on my presentation to my clients whether i speaking a boring picth i would rather show them a varities of pictures to help them understand my goal or my purpose. It is not a huge change for other social media because facebook already has that but for twitter users i think its a major change and they will use it to express their tweets in more detail.
This new aspect of Twitter was really interesting for me to hear about. I have never pictured Twitter as a social media site that focused on pictures, but now that it has become so popular I don’t see why it can’t. I think that being able to tag pictures and add multiple pictures on Twitter will be very beneficial for brand strategy. Now, a twitter account for a company can add pictures in a series to get a message across. Also, if they are trying to get a certain group of people to see their post, they can tag them in it to get a more direct response. Also, if twitter users can see that people they follow are tagged in a post, they probably would be able to click on that post themselves to see what it’s all about. This is a great way to spread the word and to reach people in different target audiences, especially if people who are tagged in the posts tweet back or retweet the tweets.

The new tagging feature on Twitter could be used to amplify the sharing of content. If you want to reach a certain key person or an influential person for a target audience, tagging them directly will get them to notice the content. Using photographs will make it even easier because there won't be any reading involved to capture their attention. This will also benefit cross promotion and networking. Sharing pictures and tagging those who are in the picture can make lasting connections. Photos are easier to share and get more attention than articles or other wordy posts.
I was unaware of these new changes that twitter was adding to their social media site. It is so true that one of the hardest parts of working in this feild is keeping up with the every changing landscape of what is trending and popular. I think this new feature on twitter could have some major benefits for creating dialogue and conversation. If up to ten people can be tagged in a photo this will increase the amount of exposure a singular tweet can recieve. A company or brand can utilize this new feature to tag those in the photo that they believe are relevant or would retweet the tweet to increase circualtion. I think this will have a positive impact on getting more people to see tweets on twitter.
I think this can be a great tool for companies on twitter, because when they post new products or new ideas they cn tag their desired market right to the photo. It allows them to personally market to their cleints, it makes it more personal for the consumer in my opinion. And being able to add more than one pic to a post is also very cool because it allows you to be more in depth with putting pictures of your product up. I guess we will see how it works out.
Brands could easily use the new Twitter feature in order to create conversation and build brand awareness. Being able to tag celebrities that openly use the brand's products or even tagging consumers that @ mention the brand on Twitter could spark up conversations. The ability to create celebrity endorsers without having to pay the celebrity would become accessible as well. Tagging and interacting with celebrities would, in a way, be an endorsement.
I think adding multiple pictures to a single tweet is huge. It allows people to include multiple angles of a picture, without having to post multiple tweets. I think this could be big for people selling or advertising on Twitter. For example, if someone was selling their car, they can now include several pictures of their car in a single post, making it easier for the buyer to find information about the car. They do not have dig through multiple posts anymore to see different pictures of the car. I think this could also help stores advertising new products on Twitter. They can tweet out to all of their followers about how they just got a bunch of new arrivals and include all the new items in a single post. Tagging friends is now easier as well. I think this could help Twitter grow even more since people are going to want to view all these extra pictures that were not there in the past.
The recent twitter updates are huge not only for personal use but it allows companies to do much more in one tweet where as before to get a point across multiple tweets were needed because they needed to display mulitple pictures. Companies can now display their products or get a specific point across easier than before, while also being able to tag those who were involved in the tweet. Companies that have events can now display more pictures in a tweet and can tag all those who were involved and then everyone can have a coversation on that one tweet instead of on seperate tweets because pictures had to be spaced out before. This feature really seems like a showing of how twitter is trying to advance and become on par with other social media sites and is implimenting different features that allow people to do more and get more from the site.
Adding the capability to post more than 1 picture at a time on Twitter is useful. Being able to tag other Twitter accounts in the picture you post is awesome! The first thing that jumps out to me comes from doing our most recent assingment. Twitter will become a more viable social media platform for posting to photo contests. Tagging company accounts will make it easier to signup for photo contests.
I think the fact that Twitter is allowing users to post multiple photos to an individual tweet is HUGE! It's hard to picture what it will look like right now, but I believe that this will create Twitter users to be more likely to click on that particular Tweet. People love pictures - so in the future I would definitely use pictures to my clients advantage. If there was a big event that I was helping my client with, I would put multiple photos in a Tweet to show people everything there is at the event. That way people won't be annoyed by multiple Tweets with pictures attached, they can conveniently be located all in one Tweet.
The new innovation of adding more than one picture to a tweet and tagginf people on Twitter I think is very useful for business who use Twittr. They can add multiple pictures at once drawing in the consumer as the consumer scrolls through the pictures they become more and more interested wanting to visit the company website and making the company a part of their network.
This is not only big for Twitter, but it is even bigger for companies using Twitter to market their products and services.
I had no idea about this at all (I think I need to catch up my news a little more). My "client" for my final presentation is Under Armour, a company well known for their creative commercials and innovate designs for their sports apparel. This news helps out Under Armour tremendously when it comes down to Twitter. They sponsor multiple HUGE name athletes, such as Bryce Harper and Cam Newton, just to name a few. Most of these athletes have Twitter accounts to interact with their fans. Under Armour already posts video's and print ads of their sponsored athletes, which is great to give a nice view to their followers instead of just text. Now they will be able to tag all of their sponsored athletes (well, up to 10) and be able to have a full post ready about that picture. In addition to a shot of all of the athletes, users will be able to connect with their favorite from that particular picture or ad by checking out their twitter page that they'll already be tagged in. I think this is a really cool feature to come from Twitter. It's going to help businesses tremendously and be fun for the average Joe.
I would use it in a similar way as I do on Facebook. When there's a big group picture it is nice to be able to tag someone. Now that twitter has this feature, may more people will post pictures like this more often to twitter. Being able to post multiple photos to an individual tweet is also a great way to completely capture the setting or environment. Maybe a series of pictures in chronological order will be seen more as a result. Maybe some athletes could use this to post some cool things that they may want to share.
I would use it in a similar way that brands use facebook or instagram photos. You can now create a mini storybook - such as models on a photoshoot or Magic Johnson coming into your East Lansing business and shopping there. This isn't revolutionary work, but it could create different dynamics to work with.
This new feature that includes being able to tag people on twitter will allow companies to get other clients, companies, and followers more involved and engaged. I've not tagged a company or person many times because it takes up so much of my character count in a tweet. Now, that problem is solved and can allow companies to be more interactive than ever. I hope companies use this to their advantage, i.e., to generate more conversations with their clients.
Brands can utilize the new tagging features of Twitter in many ways. One way brands can use this feature is to post pictures of celebrities when the celebrity, shops in their store, uses their product, or even how their product can better solve their problems than a competitor's product. Imagine if The North Face sees a picture of Ellen DeGeneres wearing a Columbia coat, while looking like she is freezing. The North Face can post that picture and another where DeGeneres looks warm and toasty while she is (photo shopped) wearing a coat made by The North Face. Caption it with a clever line and The North Face could have something viral.
Brands can also take advantage of this to promote ordinary people using their brand. The brand can effectively create contests and properly use hashtags tailored to their products and tweet multiple pictures of people using them. The users will feel a deeper connection to the brand if they are tagged in a picture and the brand can show off how many people are using their product. The brands also benefit from increased exposure, because people are likely to share their excitement about being tagged by their favorite brands, which means more free mentions for the brands, without more effort.
After i read this article i immediately thought how this can be useful in showing how your brand benifits the lives of those who participate. By being able to tag people to pictures on twiiter and with the ability to add so many pictures to one post, whenever an event takes place in refenece to your brand not only will you have visual documentation but viewrs can then click on the profiles of the people who were tagged and they can directly communicate with those people and see how the brand or event changed their life. This can be used in marketing by showcasing they value and esteem of the brand as well.
Twitter's new update can be very helpful for marketing. Businesses can now tag their clients or clients can tag them. For example, if a PR agency were to gain a new client, they could post pictures of them. Both of their companies account followers could then view this picture. This can almost double the amount of twitter followers it reaches.
If a business were to participate in an event, they could post pictures from the event to share with others. However now, they can tag people who were in the pictures to gain followers and create a buzz about the event and their company.
Mulitple photo's and tagging open twitter up for many new marketing tatics. A campagin could hold photo contests or use a series of pictures to tell a story. Tagging photots could lead to a close connection to the target audience and make it easier to reserach demographics since a company could view pictures from an event and know the names of other individuals participating, not just the possibly more socially acitive poster.
There are a number of ways to use this Twitter update to the advantage of a brand. Being able to upload photos and tag twitter users in it can create a buzz and a conversation between all the followers each tag has. For a brand, they can be tagged in a photo by one of their customers or members and creat traffic. It can help spread the word about a certain brand as well by followers retweeting the photo. This new feature will be very beneficial to clothings brands because of the traffic a simple photo of an outfit can generate.
This is the first I have heard of this new update and as a frequent twitter user I think it is very interesting. It sounds like they have really taken the time to ensure that this new update will not compromise any other twitter functions, such as the 140 character limit and adjustment of notifications. Twitter is a very quick and convinent form of social media. This sounds like addition and I am excited to see it in use.
No doubt this is a huge asset for Twitter. This will not only allow people to connect in a new fashion on twitter but businesses as well. The new addition of being able to include multiple photos in a tweet can allow businesses to promote themselves in a more efficient manner, meaning they can get their message across in fewer tweets. This is very useful in marketing because complimentary businesses can connect and converse.
This is an incredible news because I have been a twitter fan for a long time and as the field of social media grows and gets bigger, so must the titans in the field such as twitter. Other websites like facebook is bringing new ways of advertising. So i believe this new feature on twitter is generally a good step towards better things in store for social media especially since there can be new tags involving businesses as well as friends.
This is huge news for twitter, I am a avid twitter and social media user yet I did not know aboutthis feature yet. I have to say, it's about time. I love that Twitter is all about building deep connections with followers and helping promote your business or brands, however I do love that Twitter still has differences and is not like Facebook at all. I have to say that as far as businesses go, this will be a great way to tag "friends" or other businesses that I may be in contact with that way I can associate them further with my account more than just retweets or favoriting their tweets or page. I think a great way to use this new tool would be to tag other businesses in photos that can branch together companies that are related together or working together for causes or campaigns.
With Twitter now allowing you to tag people in photos it can create many opportunities. For example, if you tag someone that you know in a photo one of their followers can see it and remember your face. That can potentially lead to a job opportunity if your friend was a very important and respected person. It can also be used to show the twitter page of an endorser of a company, or a partner of the company. Also, it can build relationships within a company by creating more conversations about the photo that can lead to other conversations.
I believe this kind of feature for Twitter was inevitable. Tagging photos is just one more way to connect online, and build relationships. I can definitely see Twitter moving into Instagram territory with photo management as well. Businesses could potentially use this application to reach out to clients/leads with promotional material or anything related. I also think this could benefit non-profits, especially when reaching out to or thanking major donors. It is great that tagging does not take up any characters. It is always bothersome when you have to decide which gramatical error to make when tagging people in tweets, in order to fit within the character limit.
I think this was a really great decision on Twitter's part. Obviously, Facebook has become the greatest social media site that's out there, and for Twitter to now add some of the similar features that Facebook has, it makes for a greater, familiar experience on Twitter. Regarding the business aspect, I think that this could have the potential to be a great marketing feature. For example, a company that you follow could tag you in some of their tweets/ pictures to get your attention. It would also be nice if a company could upload coupon pictures on their twitter page and tag you in it so that you can get the coupon just because you follow them.
The introduction of tagging on Twitter pictures opens up a lot of doors for the social media site. Companies can now post pictures and tag up to ten people. This will create a new way for two way communication between the company and the consumer. Although the picture can only have ten people tagged in it, that doesn't mean that only ten people will see it. If the picture is effective people will retweet it and favorite it. This will cause the original picture to branch out to many different groups and reach many people. It is said that pictures speak louder than words, and being in advertising I've found that assumption to be valid. Twitter lives off of trending topics and up to date news, and being able to tag pictures will make pictures go viral faster than ever before.
Being able to tag people on twitter can allow companies to get others more involved. When you tag someone it gives them a notification alert which can draw more attention to the picture or post. It makes it harder for people to ignore when you are calling their attention via tags. It also is a nice way to show appreciation to clients. Giving them a little shout out or acknowledgement can make them more interested in what you have to say.
It was only a matter of time before Twitter followed suit and allowed its users to tag pictures. This opens up creative ways for advertisers to be able to use this function for better brand marketing. With the ability to tag up to 10 people a trend that could be started would be advertisers grouping their key endorsement figures into pictures together to allow them to better reach those followers. An example of this would be getting all the top Clients that Nike Endorses such as Lebron James, Tiger Woods, etc all together for a creative picture. This picture can then be tagged so that millions of followers of these athletes would see Nike’s brand.

Posted this as a resource but it goes along with what you are saying about twitter. The documentary is all about the increase of the impact social media has on our world today. Everything from Facebook to twitter to instagram to YouTube. Amazing how a “lie” or a “Follow” is considered somewhat of a currency.
Twitter was already a huge asset to business from all over the world. Its probably the best way to get information out to just about everyone and everything. Its a constant conversation that quickly and efficiently spreads awareness and education. Adding tagged picture will only increase this awareness. Imagine a group of people using a product and tagging each other in a photo on twitter. That photo can then be retweeted by the company and expand their network as well as others. Not to mention, a picture says a thousand words so if people in the photo look like they are enjoying the product, its a positive reflection on the company and product they are trying to sell.
I think there needs to be a delicate balance here for twitter, to ensure they don't diverge too far from what they originally where. However from a marketing perspective this can be a huge advantage. I could see a brand doing a photo shoot with twitter accounts that have huge followers and tagging them in it or even creating a contest where you have to tweet pictures using the product or brand along with a few of your friends and tag them as well as the company in the tweet for a chance to win. This could create a lot of attention for the brand as a viral social media campaign.
Tagging in pictures on Twiiter is a great new abilty...Facebook has had it for so long that I thought it was a natural progression for Twitter. Like Facebook create more retweets and favorites!
The new abilities added to Twitter, photo tagging and multiple photo upload, bring Twitter a bit up to speed and creates all sorts of new opportunities for digital marketing. Once what was only possible on Facebook can now be taken advantage of on Twitter. It creates the opportunity to have more followers and non-followers to see you r content. The more you tag, the more the reach. Given this idea, up to ten tags will not only reach a broader audience, but gives you the functionality to still get your message across with the same number of characters to tweet. Multiple photo sharing also brings a new weapon to the digital marketing arsenal. Being able to share more photos in one specific tweet will encourage more of your content to be seen instead of ten tweets in a row of single photos. Updates like this create all new possibilities across digital marketing, and because they happen almost every day among all platforms, we will always be on our way to greater and efficient communication tools.
I am somewhat open to this idea of tagging up to 10 people and posting up multiple photos. As the site's power increases, so must the content uploads of the site. In terms of business wise, this would be incredibly helpful for my future clients because you can use this new twitter picture to better inbound market the contents of the products they are trying to release.
Pictures grab the attention of people much quicker than writing because it is easier to mindlessly skim through pictures than to read content. If the picture can grab attention then it is more likely someone will read what you have to say. This new change to twitter definitely will work to businesses advantage. With tagging they can directly involve people such as their clients customers or partners. This makes twitter more of a platform for interaction, which we have learned is extremely beneficial to businesses. It will now be easier to post more than one picture of events or products to give the audience a fuller idea.
The main thing I liked about Twitter compared to Facebook was that it was the simplest social media site. The 140-character limit is designed for Tweets to be short and sweet; if the site ever increases this limit I think I would lose interest in it all together. I don’t want to read tweets that all paragraphs long, like I often see on people’s Facebook status. Though, I can see why Twitter added the new feature of uploading multiple photos and being able to tag up to 10 friends. They’re taking the next step and keeping up with Facebook and other online marketing tools.
Setting my personal views aside, I think this feature will be very helpful for my (future) client, which is Levi Strauss & Co. Levi will be able to engage their target audience with the brand even more than before. When new products are coming to the season’s collection, Levi could take pictures of the items. If there’s a model wearing the clothing item, he/she could be tagged in the picture as well. Levi could also utilize the new feature by engaging real life customers into their marketing statics. A Twitter campaign Levi could run which will encourage passionate Levi consumers to take a picture of their new jeans or product, and to tag Levi in their picture. Levi would then retweet the customers’ photo to showcase the product on their own Twitter page. This will connect the target audience on a personal level. If a fashion blog or reporter writes a (positive) review about a product, Levi could post a photo of that product and tag the blogger/reporter in the photo, also including the link to their article. I think loyal consumers of Levi will enjoy seeing that others share their passion for the brand.
This is a great for Twitter. This works well now because most social media sites can be connected to other ones. Now if I tag my client on instagram it will be taggedo n twitter as well. Also, the tagging now taking up any characters is very useful when trying to describe what you want to in your post. It is great Twitter is adapting to the wants and needs for promotional advertising of clients. It is also a great way to start ideas and conversations about a picture that can help the company. Tagging up to ten people is also good because it could help the image or tweet go viral and get people clicking on your profile. It is creating new ways for Twitter to interact with others and could possibly boost their users.
Twitter has been gradually improving their attributes and features and are competing with Facebook and Instagram as two of their largest competitors. They have improved the look of Twitter's newfeed where you can now view pictures in the feed without clicking on them. This new feature where you can attach multiple photos and tag people in it will differentiate them from what they were previously and will increase their competitive nature with Facebook and Instagram. This will give them a competitive edge and will allow companies and people to turn to Twitter as the one man band instead of using Instagram and Facebook. Twitter will be able to do all the capabilites of Instagram and Facebook all in one app. Companies will be able to connect more directly and efficiently with their clients and their clients consumers. This new feature is brilliant.
I think a good way to use the new Twitter tagging system would be if you were running a campaign with a spokesperson, you could add pictures of them and then tag them. If you uploaded a picture and tagged 10 people with a lot of followers it would cause the picture to go viral. This would continue to draw attention to your account and would grow the following of the account. This could be considered annoying, but who knows, it could be the reason for your accounts success.
The feature where you can tag pictures on Twitter will be useful for businesses in a very positive way. This could be useful for attaching yourself and a client into the same shot. This benefits you because you may be associating yourself with a wider known name. For example, if representatives of your company and the client company are both at a charity function, tagging a picture of the event brings both positive publicity and recognition. Moreover, it will encourage client goodwill when they see that they are being promoted in a positive way. The potential uses of the tagging feature certainly don't end with that example.
Twitter is trying to prove their value to Wall Street, so I'm not surprised they made this strategic move that will directly benefit digital marketers and bussineses alike. The only problem may be that users may abuse the 'tagging' aspect, and some may opt to turn notifications off completely if they become excessive. I recently accepted a full time position as a Digital Marketing Coordinator, and am excited to see Twitter providing more value!
This feature will be great with promoting clients. Especially since instagram has a tagging system it will make it very easy to use the two together. Also when promoting products or events it will be great to have a description and then a link back to the client through the tagging system. In the statement above that talks about the conversations it will create and the fact it will make photos fun is very true. Social media has become more visual than ever so making pictures easier to link to will create a really good dynamic for twitter and could possibly boost their use.
I would say it is a good news to social media marketers. Marketers now can create something funny and sassy for other Twiterers to tag their friends. It is better to be positive and not controversial. I know positive and sassy sounds contradicted, but there's a blur line. It will allow marketers to raise awareness of the brand/service/candidate.
