Thank You Tim Berners Lee... and Al Gore?

Some of you maybe familiar with the ultra-successful social network Reddit. If you are, you're probably aware of their "IAmA" series, where famous and (not-so famous) people introduce themselves and answer questions from other Reddit users. Some of the more famous participants include president Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Bryan Cranston.
Recently, Tim Burners Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, participated in a IAmA series. While reading the discussion, I was reminded of my life "pre-internet." I first got online in 1995 through American Online using a dial up modem. I was 13 at the time and while young and nieve, I knew it was only a matter of time before everyone was online.
My generation has experienced nearly equal time with access to the internet as without. It's easy to remember what it was like to write reports or do research before all the information in the world was just a Google search away (hint: it sucked.) As such, it's easy to appreciate how it's improved my life. Those older than I have experienced a majority of their life without this sort of hyper-connectivity. Some of you may have always had some level of internet connectivity.
So it's time to so back and think. Because I'd like to know how the web (and the internet as a whole) effects your daily lives? If it had never been invented, what major shifts would you experience?
Comments & Feedback
I can't imagine my life without the Internet. I was 10 when I first got online. I was amazed by all kinds of information popped up when clicking any buttons. I've learned how great and sophisticated the Internet is all the time. Nowadays, I get myself online whenever and wherever. When I'm at home, I use my laptop doing my homework, browsing websites. When I'm on a bus, I use my smart phone for listening to the music and chat with my friends. During break time at school, I use my iPad to preview or review PPTs. My life is all about Internet. If it had never been invented, we probably still use telephone or letters to communicate. We could only watch news on TV and newspaper. Internet has changed so much.
It's amazing to think how much the internet effects my daily life. Honestly, from the time I had access to the internet I have yet to be without it. From social networking to email to gaming, the internet touches almost every aspect of my life. Without the internet, I probably woudl find myself outside a little more than I am. I big change woudl be networking. I'm in a band and the internet plays a huge role in connecting with other bands and with show promoters.
I can not live without internet. Internet has crate so much value for people's life.
It's hard to imagine my life before the web had been invented. I think we all take this modern technology for granted, and in fact, abuse it. Although the web has offered many benefits, such as the process of sharing, connecting with others and finding resources to get more information on a topic, it also has offered negative effects. I think the web and internet can be a major contributing factor into distraction, depression and other consequences. Social media distracts our generation so severely that we often end up failing to complete tasks we planned to that day. I definitely think a shift in productivity would occur without the web, but it also allows us to do tasks that manually would be much more time consuming.
If we didnt have the internet i honestly think that the entire worold would be a lot smarter. As for myself i think the internet provides me with tons of knowledge that i didnt know. The internet changes everyones life and gives us the ability to find solutions in any aspects of life. If the internet wasnt invented id probably be a lot more motivated to do active things or things that involve me getting out of the house. So without the internet id probably do better at school but at the same time wouldnt be exposed to the many different facts around the word.
I mean where to start, I use thinternet everyday for 4+ hours a day. Whether its for school or just shopping I seem to find my self on the world wide web alot. IT would be crazy not to have evrything just a google away, alot more manpower had to be done to accomplish things like research. We connect with so many of our friends and family through the internet on social media and email. You get your work schedule through email in most cases now, and it would be so much more paper intensive for school because you wouldnt have website like angel and D2L to allow your students to access the class content at anytime. Life would be a ewhole lot different to say the least, thank god we hsve thid besutiful tool at our disposal. But as with evrything moderation is key.
I wonder whether I would be more or less efficient if the internet had never been invented. I often find myself distracted and roaming around on the world wide web when I should be doing something more productive with my time. There's always something to see or another link to click. However, I do see the helpfulness of the internet. The ability to post and share things vitrually makes communication so much easier. I can see what's happening around the world and stay up to date with hundreds of friends with ease. Life would probably be a little bit slower if not for the internet, but communication would be a much greater challenge.
I'm not a Redditor, but I love Reddit AMA's or IAmA's! Sometimes they seem like nothing more than a publicity move, but sometimes the host will give pretty interesting information.
As for your question, if the internet had never ben invented, the way our education system is set up would be dramatically different. More effort would be involved on the teacher's part as well as the student's part. Now, most homework can be graded automatically. This saves the teacher a lot of time and effort, while still maintaining grading accuracy and the ability to gauge how well the class is grasping course concepts. Also, class resources and information can be communicated quickly. I think the internet has impacted large colleges like MSU far greater than small schools for obvious reasons. It's a lot easier to communicate important announcements in person to a class of 20 than a class of 400. Luckily, email is an effective way to send out a message and know that everyone got your message.
Without internet, I think our world would be a little bit more personal and thoughtful. This is just my opinion, but I think people have taken on an attitude that they can be completely oblivious to the world around them because they always have the option to look something up online later. Instead of listening in class to a professor, students can just access slides online later. Instead of listening to what a friend is saying to them in person, people zone out or look at their phones. You know you can always double check the name of the company they just accepted a job offer with via Facebook if you need to. There is no need to conciously try to remember anything anymore. You don't need to memorize people's birthdays or their phone numbers (I'm not saying these things are bad, just very different than how it used to be). I think the change in our culture is a subconcious effect of having what we think is all the information we could want at our fingertips, and there's no denying it has changed the way humans have relationships and interactions with other people.
Honestly, it is hard to imagine life without the internet. Especially for someone in my generation who grew up with it. It has affected every aspect of our lives including work, school and our social lives. Attending college without the internet is a hard concept to grasp. Communication between professors would be a lot less immediate and classes like this would not exist. In social terms, I think a lot less people would interact because without instant communication like Facebook and txting word of social events would only travel via word-of-mouth. I think the internet has improved the college experience in many ways, but has it also affected it negatively? Without the internet, students wouldn't have the option of brining their laptops to class and choosing to surf the net all class instead of listen to the professor. I would be very curious to see a study done to see how the internet has affected college GPAs since its birth.
The web effects my daily life in multiple ways, first I wouldn’t be able to do my homework for school or even take some of my classes like this one that are primarily online without it. Second, you’re always expected to be connected for example if I don’t answer an email within in 24 hours I’ll get another email from that person. Third, I would spend less time procrastinating and paying better attention in class if I didn’t have the Internet.
I often find myself forgetting that personal computers were not a part of everyday lift until fairly recently. I remember when I was little and having desktop computer that I shared with my siblings. We would play computer games, but I don’t specifically remember using the Internet. It wasn’t until I was in about 5th grade that I remember using the Internet for school and social life. I always wondered why my family had two house phone lines, and it wasn’t until I was older that I understood that it was because of dial up. I imagine that if we didn’t have internet we would have much more face-to-face interaction, or call people on the phone on a more regular basis. It would be difficult to have online classes such as this one, and the whole idea of social media would be much different and more limited. That being said, work life would move much slower as you couldn’t respond to an email, upload a file or research any questions you had until you returned to your office. Though I do think life may be more simpler in a positive way had there been no internet, but I also believe that we are lucky and if used in moderation, the internet is a wonderful thing..
The internet is a huge part of my daily life. I use it for everything; schools and if I need to google something I do not know the answer to. If I didnt have the internew I probably would not be doing half of the things I do today and I would be much more productive. The internet creates procratination because there is so much to do on it and it gets you hooked. If it had never been invented I'm not sure what I would do. My life would completely change- maybe for the better? I'm usure of that answer. But I do know that life would not be as easy as it is in todays generations.
While the internet does have its dark sides and has aided in many bad things, I think the good that the world wide web has done far out weighs the bad. The ability we have to share knowledge, art, culture, and so many other things with the click of some keys is amazing. I for one don't know what I would do without Google. I can be a bit of a know-it-all and in combination with this have a need to know the answers to questions as soon as they pop into my head. I can't imagine not having the ability to just run to a computer or smart phone and have a simple question immediately answered. Before the internet I would have had to go to a library or book store and search through multiple books to find the answer, otherwise I would have had to live with not knowing. After having the ability to Google everything now, I wouldn't be able to live with the not knowing.
First of all, if there were no internet I would probably give my attention to more productive things. However, going into public relations, the internet playsa vital role in the different jobs I will need to do in my future career. I use the internet at my current job 75% of the time, I can't imagine not being able to use it. The internet is a vital tool when it comes to social media and other promotional tools. I'm trying to imagine what my life would be like without email and it seems terrible. The internet has made communication so easy that sometimes we as a generation take it for granted. I do think that a lot of people today rely a little too much on it, but the internet has made so many things easier that the benefits exceed the negative asepcts in my opinion.
If the internet had never been invented, I would have stronger relationships to the people I am in close proximity with. I would have more frequent face-to-face interaction with those I love, because I wouldn't have the option of catching up with them and getting "the latest" on their lives over the internet.
With the individuals that I don't live near, I would likely not be in contact as often and as easily with them. My sister goes to Arizona State University. We use the internet as a major form of communication. Without it, our relationship would not be as strong is it is. However, when we would finally reunite after a long time of not seeing or talking to one another, we probably wouldn't run out of things to talk about and our face-to-face interaction would be more exciting.
I'd like to think that, since I am living in the Digital-era, that Internet has made our lives a much better place. Through internet, people all over the world can come in contact, which was incredibly hard before. The utilization of world wide web and more are making our world a better place since it is so much easier to do everything with the World Wide Web.
As it is partially unfortunate to say, the internt makes up a huge part of every day life. From waking up in the morning and checking Instagram of Facebook, to countlessly refreshing my feed during class and times of boredom, I have come to the point where I am dependent on the internet. For example, I keep most of my files in an online drop box, have countless active google docs with classmates, and use the internet as an E-book for countless classes. Basically without the internet, my life would be crippled.
If the internet never came into existence I feel that I would be much better off. I would pay much more attention to detail as everything I would have, use, and need would be a tangible object, I would definitely pay more attention in class, and especially pay more attention in basically every social situation I would partake in. Basically, I feel that life would feel more complete and overall happier.
I sometimes forget that personal computers are relatively recent. Not to mention internet access. I can still recall being very little and my dad getting a mac laptop, which looked more like a lap desk and had very few funtions aside from simcity and notepad. Even in elementary school, I recall using the dial up internet to get online and check AOL and AIM friends(aka the original text message). It's crazy to think how far we've come. In regards to my everyday life, I imagine not having internet would definitely slow things down. We couldn't operate at a distance the way we do now, and we would have to stick to much stricter meeting times. Whereas now, I can shoot an email, upload a file, and research anything I could ever want to know via the internet.
If the Internet had never been invented I would experience a major shift in my relationships. After graduation high school my best friend went to school in New York. Our main form of communication is through Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. We talk on the phone a little, but with both of us having a lot of school work it is more convenient to send each other a quick message now and then when we have free time. I was also just in a long distance relationship wich relied almost wholly on the internet, Skype was our main form of communication and made it easier to be apart for long time periods. The Internet provides many ways to keep friends close and help maintain relationships.
Although many might immediatley jump to say that life is all around better with the internet I happen to dissagree. Of course the internet has made so many things easier and has absolutely advanced education. I think it has led to higher requirements for college assignments which leads to smarted students and all that. I absolutley wouldnt trade the benefits the internet has given us all. However I am truly grateful I did not have the internet in my childhood years. I think the internet has done detrimental things to our younger generations social health and overall quality of life. My memories as a child included gathering all my neighbors and playing kickball, soccer and foursquare. Now everywhere I go I see children with some sort of tablet in their hands with their eyes just glued to it and I feel so sorry for them. There isnt a doubt in my mind that my childhood without internet was more fullfilling then kids today with it. I think parents should take better responsiblity and provide internet to their kids at a reasonable age.
I think the internet has changed the world we live in, but not all for the better. It is a beautiful and useful creation, but through it has also spawned bullying, invasion of privacy, and fraud. I imagine a life before internet was much more simple, but difficult. I could not imagine actually needing to go to the library to research a topic and it not being a click away. While it would have been much more difficult to complete your research, I think it would have made us more produvtive as a society. I don't regret the internet as it has made my life much more simple, but I do regret some of the things that have come with the internet as it has grown and expanded.
Web is intergrated into every single thing we do throughtout the day. Our phones we waste time with, our computers we do homework with, our work we research with. Without the web the world wouldn't know what someone across town was doing let alone across the globe.
There are so many things about the internet that makes life easier. Communicating with friends and doing research is as easy as clicking a mouse. Part of me thinks that aspects of the internet have made me dumber by having things so readily available. Another part of me realizes all the things i've learned just because I was curious about something and looked at my phone. I would like the idea of more face to face communication, because I strongly believe that social media and texting have diminished societies social skills. People would probably pay more attention in class if they didn't have the internet to surf around on.
even though im wondering why we have the same blogs as last week, i am still going to leave a responds to fulfill the participation.
The Author made an interesting point throughout the pages, brought the well-known IAmA series on the Reddit website. This series has been continued since the mist history of the internet, back in 1995, which gives me a thought. How is the future people gona look at our technology nowadays. I truly believe that technology is going to be even more advance in maybe decades from now, is there any web series going to consistent till then? It is questionable.
My guess is that the author and I are from somewhat similar age groups. I was younger but, got online around the same year using AOL. AIM was a mainstay all through highschool, most houses had land lines, and pay phones were every where. The web has so saturated my life since then that its hard to separate it out. Without the web, life just slowes down. Maybe the best way to understand how it effects our lives is to ponder what would happen if the internet were (for whatever reason) to stop working all together. The world wouldn't end but, it would seem like it. World wide economic depression severe enough to bring down governments, planes crashing, WOW players going mad, it would be bedlam.
Without the web I feel like people although connected with less people, will be more intimately connected with more people. People have some odd 300, 400, 600+ Facebook friends. Who knows that many people intimately? No one, that’s who. People would actually be forced to pick up a phone, send a letter, and –gasp- meet with someone face to face! Yes research would be more difficult and time consuming (I’ve lived through Encyclopedia reports and trips to the library myself). Don’t get me wrong, I feel the web has done a lot of amazing things for us as a society, but it also has weakened actual human interaction and relationships. Check out this video/article on how Facebook and other forms of social media is making us lonely to see what I’m talking about.
As I have chosen a career path in the social media field, I would have to chose something completely different. Each day I spend hours searching for content to post for the two jobs I have in social media. I love my job because I get to surf the web and find things that I find interesting to share with friends and other followers. I also found a passion for graphic design, which is quite different without the internet.
Besides my career path, things like news and television would be different for me as well. I get most of my news from Twitter and the Huffington Post, which are all online. My hobby is blogging and that would have to change as well. I can't even listen to music without the internet because I use Pandora and Spotify.
Facebook and Instagram are tools I use daily to connect to friends and relatives that don't live near me. I look at my cousins photos of her new baby or check out what my best friend is doing in Boston by viewing the pictures and status updates online. I would have to make a larger effort to send pictures through snail mail or take time to call each of the people I want to connect with.
All in all, my daily routine would be severly changed without the internet- I'd have to go back to the drawing board to choose a new career path!
For as long as I can remember, the internet has been a part of my life. I grew up with a mother who is a graphic designer, so there has always been a computer in my house. I can barely imagine my life without a computer, but I know it would be very different. Take this class into consideration, it would be impossible to have online classes let alone online communication like email. I don't think that I would be in as much contact with my long distance friends, due to inconvenience of phone calls. People my age have grown up in such a digital generation, I think that it is hard for us to even fathom a world with out the internet. I think it might be good for us to go a day without the internet and see what a world with out constant contact to friends and infromation would be like.
I feel like I have
almost always had access to the internet, because it is such an important part
of my life now. However, I also do remember doing reports in elementary school
where we actually had to look up everything in books at the library.
(Specifically I remember writing a report in first grade on Zebras) It was
pretty horrible, because we couldn't even Ctrl-F for keywords and to skim the
whole thing.
Today
my life would be very different without the web. For one, I wouldn't be able to
be in this #NMDL online class. I would probably also need to text and call my
friends several times a day, just to find out what they are all up to...which
would make it impossible to keep up with as many people. I would also need to
find a new way to manage my time so that I could watch all of my TV shows live
instead of streaming them online at 2 a.m. There would lots of changes that I
don't want to make.
First and foremost, Encyclopedia Britannica would still be a thing. As I worked on the test tonight, I would have had to go to a classroom in order to take it, and look up whatever information I needed in a textbook or my notes that I took out from the set at the library.
Second, communication would be different. I would have had to dial up all of the people I sent e-mails to tonight during normal business hours. Instead, I was able to go to websites to get most of the answers I needed, and send an e-mail for the rest.
Finally, I'm going to watch a movie once I finish this post using Netflix. If it weren't for the internet, I'd have to walk to the nearest Redbox (at best) to be able to pick a flick from a much more limited library.
I cannot think back to a time where I did not use the internet. I remember being young and being annoyed becasue I was using AOL and dial up, would always take a long time to get connected to the internet. While I cannot imagine life without the internet, I sometimes think it is sad that the internet is taking over our gerneration, it consumes much of our lives. I am becoming more aware of the fact that I rely on the internet on a daily basis- I check weather, emails and social media sites, and classwork/assignments.
In my opinion I believe generation Y has been spoiled as well as lazy with the amount of technology and use of Internet we use. Sometimes, I even catch myself wasting entire days sitting on my phone and laptop. What I believe is even a bigger epidemic is television. People now have access to millions of episodes of their favorite shows through Netflix, HBO Go, Showtime Anytime and more these can be accessed through your mobile phone, laptop, and tablets. This ease of accessibility allows people to be trapped in a daze watching episode over episode for days on end. Finishing entire seasons of shows in a matter of days. People must find time to unplug and start doing things, such as sports, or even just going outside.
I honestly can't think back to the time when internet was not around and a part of my life. From the youngest ages I always played computer games and online school games. The older the got, the more advances in computers happen, the more I used them. I would google how to do my research project to how to do a math problem. Now looking at today, I use it 90% of my day. I use email to communicate with others, google to find out information, online sites for school and homework and so on. Without it, I don't even know where or what I would do in order to complete these things.
I have never lived in a world with out internet access. I didn't use it as much as I do now when I was younger. I think, if the internet wasn't invented our society may be better. The interent gives so many short-cuts and allows people to cheat and have access to a lot more things. And there is so much information that it is hard to tell what is real and what is fake. I feel like our world would be dramatically different but it would not be different in a negative way. It may very well be a positive thing.
Had the internet never been invented...I probably would not be an accounting major, that is for sure!! Without having online access to the different code sections that we need and being able to search items quickly using "Ctrl F" I would be lost. Also, this reminds me of elementary school and middle school when we would have to write research papers and we would use the Almanics provided to us by the library. I do not think I would even know how to go about searching in one of thoes or even finding the correct one to search in. Another case and point, not to long ago I was talking with my grandma about her travels out West with my grandpa and stuff and me being a typical millinial asked "how did you know where to go without a GPS?" It actually slipped my mind that people actually had to use maps to get places and did not have a GPS in the tip of their hands or on their phones where they can jstu ask Siri. The internet has definitely provided very advantageous to our generation, but I believe it has also made us very dependent on it as well. FUture generations will never know the struggle of wanting to talk on the phone while your sister was instant messaging on America Online.
I have thought about this topic a few times - thanks to my mom constantly reminding me that "things are so much easier for kids these days". I got my first email address/aim name when I was about 8 so I have very little memory of what school, or much else, was like before the internet since school was not very demanding of research in 3rd grade. However, I think about how much easier it is to write research papers or learn a little bit about a random topic I hear about during the day within seconds and a few clicks instead of going to the library, looking up the books offered on a subject and then reading through the whole thing to find what I needed. I do think that it is still important to use some print-versions of information for research these days because sometimes it may be hard to validate information provided on the internet. But thinking about what my mom says about things being so much easier for us because of the internet, sometimes I wonder if that is really true because there is also a claim that more is expected from our generation because of how readily available information is.
The invention of World Wide Web, in my opinion, was an extremely good thing for the world as it made our living so much more convinient and better overall. Just on the basis of looking at the new jobs that aroused from just the World Wide Web, it has made our lives an incredibly more diverse place in which people can make money off of using other people's interests. Also, it is way easier to stay in touch with your loved ones and other business related things can be more benefitting for big companies. On top of that with the world becoming media-based, it is easier for the world to fully be rid of racial or other negative stereotypes.
I think the internet and technology has made my current generation a little brain dead. I don’t feel like some, I wont say all because there are people who do like not being on their phones all the time, are really experiencing life the way they could be. I remember being a little kid sitting in front of my Playstation 1 that my brother and I got for the holidays, and my mom coming up to us telling us we have been playing too long and unplug the Playstation and make us go outside. I would say because of this I am much closer to my brother than I ever would have been because we spent all of our time together outside. We did every extreme sport you could think of from skateboarding, bmx, aggressive skating, back to skateboarding, longboarding, and so on. This also lead us into playing a lot of sports and being very active and in good shape throughout our lives. We are going to be competing in the Tough Mudder this up coming spring. For me it was very important that my internet and technology use was rationed by my parents. I think its very important for kids to be active and have fun outside of video games and computers. Go outside get hurt break your arm, figure out your body and the things you can and cant do. For me if the internet was never invented I think there would be a fairly large change to my life now because I am older and don’t go outside and hurt myself anymore, but if it hadn’t grown so quickly when I was a kid I don’t think I would have been a much different person. I’m still not very involved with social media like Facebook or twitter, I like to kind of sit back and watch others do it , just kind of observe it as a whole.
Ps. Redditor for the past 3 ½ years
Thinking back, I can hardly remember my life without the internet/without computers. From online programs to type-to-learn activities, the web and computers became a part of lesson plans for teachers even in elementary schools. Going forward to middle, where research projects started to become more prevalent, I used the web for everything. Google was pretty much the only search engine I used and I used it for just about every project I did. Today, I use the web constantly. I use it for clubs, group projects, classes, homework assignments, etc.
The internet has had a big impact on me. I remember first getting dial up in 1999 and I was excited that I could finally go online and play games on Slime Time Live (LOL). Now that I'm older, the internet has essentially been part of my daily routine ever since I can remember. Whether its checking my social media sites, or checking the weather, or looking up random facts on Google or checking out blogs. If the internet was never invented, I believe people would have more face to face conversations (which I would personally like), and I believe the younger generations would be less bullied because there would be no such thing as "cyber bullying." Overall, I'm glad we have the internet. Without it - I wouldn't know half the things I know now!
I am becoming more aware of how often I rely on the internet. When I wake up every morning I check the weather, my email and social media sites to see what I missed while I was asleep. I cannot imagine what life would be like without having the internet at my fingertips. Every single one of my classes is based online, homework, quizes, discussions, tests--all online and my professors get in touch with us through email. School and keeping in touch with people would probably change the most for me.
I could go on and on about this topic. I think about the uses of the internet daily and how lost I would be without it. I remember having to go to the library and picking out a few books for projects at school. Now, all I have to do is type in one word on Google and hundreds of answers pop up. I would have to change so much about my life if the internet did not exist. I would have to spend hours in the library. I couldn't go wherever I wanted at my leisure because wi-fi would not be around. I would have much less of a social life too. Getting help on homework or getting people together for study sessions would be very hard to coordinate. There is no doubt that a lot of the luxuries I take for granted now, wouldn't be here if the internet did not exist.
It's definitely a little strange to think about how much the web occupies our life. I definitely know that for me, my life would be a little (a LOT) less inconvenient. That isn't to say that without it, I'd be lost; I'm sure with the absence of the web, we would have learned how to do things the "old-fashioned" way. However, growing up with technology at our fingertips, we have developed ways to make our lives easier through the use of technology, and I definitely have applied that to most aspects of my day-to-day life.
I was just in Mexico for spring break where I had limited access to Internet. For the most part it, was relaxing. Probably because I was on vacation and did not want to be reminded of the real world and was with all of my friends, so I had no need for texting and social media. But once I came back, I realized how much I missed having constant access to the Internet or WiFi. I always know what is going on in the world and with my friends. If there were no Internet, there would not be much connectivity between certain news outlets and the public and social circles.
The internet has become such a necessity in my life and I'm sure everyone else in the world. From the moment I wake up in the morning I am immediately connecting to the internet and checking social media platforms. On a daily basis, if I need to know something such as the weather or a random fact, the internet is my first go to. If the internet had never of been invented, my life would be very different. For one no one could "google" anything. Everyone would spend a lot more time in libraries and finding information out on their own rather than depending on a computer or smart phone. Communication would also be very different. Instant messaging or emailing would be impossible, and people would communicate more through telephone and sending things in the mail. It would be a very different world to live in if the internet was never invented!
I would say that the internet as a whole has totally changed the way our generation operates. The first thing majority of 20-somethings do when they wake up, is check their phone. They need to be instantly connected to their friends, family, and network, and they have Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to do that very easily.
Sometimes I have a love-hate relationship with the internet. There are days when I feel that it's truly consuming my life, and I often ask myself what kind of person would I be without it. While the internet has many beneficial components, it's made our generation less social and personable, which is a major flaw in our generation.
Information is ALWAYS at the tips of fingers, literally. I think this makes our generation come off as "know-it-alls", but if the information is there, it's our right to use it as a resource. It's also funny how much the internet can frustrate people. If there isn't wifi at a location, or the internet is down, people get really angry. I would almost go as far as saying it's become somewhat of an addiction. The internet is a very bittersweet thing.
Honestly, I feel like I am connected to the internet at all times. Whether it is just to Google what I want to eat for dinner, researching a paper, or simply checking Twitter during class I am always connected. Even though I'm extremely greatful for the easy access to every bit of information I could imagine, I feel that sometimes it is taken for granted. I feel that I use the internet more for social reasons than to learn, even though it is such a great learning tool. However, it does help write papers and answer questions that I have on a daily basis.
The internet has influenced our entire generation in a very massive way. I dont think a day has gone by since the time I had discovered online games as early as 7 years old, where the internet has not been accessed by me on a daily basis. I would consider myself to be a heavy internet user, while I shy away from heavy social media usage such as twitter and facebook, I turn my attention towards things like Reddit and FPS communities to get my entertainment. My phone even has apps for Reddit, making my already super involved internet habits even that much more accessible. I think that even through my heavy usage, I am able to keep sight of the big picture and remember not to rely too heavily on it and to stay social. I think that without the internet, we would have much less access to world news and have less of a community voice, but I do feel like we would focus less on stupid outlets involving slideshows of cats and latest celebrity gossip, and spend more time interacting with each other... so theres that...
