Yesterday, Twitter -- the now ubiquitous social network -- filed its IPO to become a publicly-traded company.

As part of this filing, Twitter had to release information for the first time on how many people use the service (215 million users) and how much money it is making... or rather, losing (net losses of $79 million in 2012 and losses so far this year of $69 million).

Also revealed (but not a tremendous surprise): most of Twitter's revenue comes from selling online advertising:

Twitter only formally started selling ads in April 2010, about six months after Costolo joined the company, originally as chief operating officer. But those were basically tests, and Twitter only generated $7.3 million in ad revenue that year. The next year, that number leapt to $77.7 million, and last year Twitter’s ad salesforce generated $269.4 million. This year, the company may come close to doubling last year’s number: In the first half of 2013, Twitter sold more than $221 million worth of ads.

Have you seen promoted tweets on Twitter? What do you think of them? Given what you know about Twitter and other social networks, what do you think Twitter's long-term prospects are compared to Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+?

From where I stand, Twitter becoming a publicly-traded company is the trend of times. This is the era of social networks. Along with the rapid development of smart phones, social media become one of the main channels for people to communicate, share things and even doing business. The potential market here is impossible to quantify. However, most of the social networks are free of charge. It's inevitable to see commercials or promoted posts on these websites. Promoted tweets on Twitter came from different business such as Jcpenny and Chevorlet, so many different companies. I think those tweets are not that much annoying, since you sometimes can't even figure out their existence, especially when you have so many followings. The promoted tweets always come with a small yellow arrow with a tag "promoted by XXX". That's neat and clean. And I believe that's also the advantage of Twitter because of its word limits. The content normally should be simple and easy to read. If you want to do promotions through that short post, the content should also be precious. Compared with Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+, Twitter still has a promsing prospective, since it has a relatively free style and very useful for a quick contact and share of things. One more attractions of Twitter is that you don't need to spend much time managing it. It's time-saving, which is also the reason that many celebrities are willing to handle their Twitter accounts by themselves not by their PR team. For audience and fans, this is very appealing that you could get in touch with those famous people easily.

I’m glad to see Twitter’s IPO because I’d like to see Twitter’s growth and its ad platform is much better than Facebook. Twitter grows very fast and its main revenue comes from ad placements. This indicates that the ad platform a salient function for social media tools. Compared to Facebook, Twitter only occasionally blends ads such as new product announcements or good deals. Because the messages are very short, you can easily scroll up if you are not interested in the ad. Thus, it grants users more flexibility. The shorter message can be more effective on small screens such as your mobile phones. However, the problem could be the user base. Facebook has 800 million users, while Twitter only have 200+. Last semester, two of my classes conducted researches about social media. What we found from the studies was that people response an issue on Twitter is significantly lesser than Facebook. For example, if a company puts an ad for an upcoming event, there maybe 1 thousand plus comments under the post for 1 day on Facebook. However, it may have only fewer than 100 tweets on the Twitter for a week. I think if Twitter can take advantage of its ad platform, it will ultimately attract more users from other platforms such as Facebook and become more successful.

I have noticed the promotion tweets on twitter and they don't really bother me. I just scroll past them, like I do on facebook. Although sometimes the ads do catch your eye, or occasionally I have found myself only realizing its a promotion because I go to retweet it and then notice the "promoted by" tag. I've also noticed the brands that use the promotional tweets are random. Some of them I have never heard of and some are everyday brands, like tide. I think its a fine idea for businesses to use these as advertisements, and for twitter to have the feature. Although if I was a company I would just make an account for free, and if the company tweeted well they could gain many more followers, and people would be more likely to retweet a brand they follow, and something that isn't labeled "promotion".

I like twitter a lot better than any of the other social media alternatives out there. I think the unobtrusive nature of twitter is a plus. On twitter you can look at anyones page they don’t make you sign in like facebook is just there open. I would like not to have sponsored tweets but I know they have to do this to make money and survive. The information just feels fresh up to the minute. I hope that they don’t change the company now that they have their IPO they are probably going to focus on making money, and I hope the experience does suffer from that drive for cash.

I believe that in time companies will begin to launch greater advertising platforms from the Twitter service.  As someone who only recently joined Twitter for the purpose of this class, I have seen a lot of promotional tweets come up in my feed.  Looking at the people I have chosen to follow, this is not surprising. I follow the Red Wings as well as many other musicians and bands and they are always using the service to promote some deal or to try to attract revenue.  The fact is Twitter is a great cheap platform to shamelessly promote any product in 140 characters. The more companies that begin to use the service exclusively in this way, the more profit Twitter will make.  Although they are still losing money now, if the idea catches on then they will probably see revenue increase exponentially, provided people do not become disgusted with the amount of ads showing up in their news feed disguised as normal Tweets.  Twitter will have to figure out the perfect balance between shameless promotion and public satisfaction, because if they overcompensate in either direction the results will be terrible.  Either the public will be happy with the lack of ads and Twitter will keep losing money (and investors will fire their CEO's) or the public will lose all interest if ads become the forefront of the service.

I have noticed a promotional tweet here and there. Given that I am on Twitter more than I am on any other Social Media site, the amount of advertisements and promotional tweets I see is very minimal. Most of the promotional tweets are for companies or organizations that I follow, such as Macy's, when they talk about certain deals that they have going on, or Groupon. I love getting on Twitter knowing that there will not be tons of advertisements on the right side of the page. I enjoy only seeing my twitter feed and nothing else. I feel like eventually, since Facebook was so successful with it, that Twitter will have promotional ads to generate more revenue. I am not looking forward to this day but I will not use Twitter any less because of it (I don't use Facebook any less because of their advertisements.) I think that if and when Twitter has actual advertisements on the website, it will make them even more noticed and larger than they are now.

Student

I have noticed promoted tweets before. Out of all the social media, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+, I am on Twitter the most frequent and have the opportunity to notice these tweets. Promoted tweets tend to be relatable to you or give you information on something you are interested in. Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites and something that is here to stay. It is something that benefits businesses and your personal self. It also had multiple uses and allows for various companies to advertise. When Twitter gets more companies to advertise on their site the more successful they will be.

I don't use Twitter, so it is not a medium advertisers should use if they are trying to target me. On the other hand, I do know that many other people my age do use Twitter habitually, which makes it a great platform for advertising. If they use it appropriately it will not bother users. If ads are used overwhelmingly and take up too much space, it will not be as successful as other methods, such as blending them into the already existing format or even making them interactive. Twitter seems to be on the rise and it does have good long-term prospects of eventually being compared to Facebook and other social media sites.

I'm on Twitter a lot and I have noticed their promoted tweets.  I read them a lot because they blend into the rest of the news feed.  Once this starts to catch on I believe that Twitter will start to see profit.  The difference between Twitter and Facebook ads is that Twitter ads are not nearly as noticeable.  I've read, retweeted and followed different companies who use promoted tweets because they look exactly like every other tweet.  Facebook, Google and LinkedIn all seperate their ads using different colors, areas of the screen and pictures.  Because of this, it makes the ads easier to ignore.  Twitter just needs companies to jump on the bandwagon.  Only then will they start to see success.

Student

I have noticed promoted tweets on Twitter. I think they are annoying, but I believe in time we will become used to them and they will be no more annoying than a commercial coming on while you're watching your favorite TV show or ad banners on websites. While the promoted tweets are annoying, I do appreciate how the promoted tweets usually come from a brand that someone you follow follows or there is at least some type of connection, which make the ads more relevant and less annoying.

I think that Twitter has a lot of long-term potential and is here to stay. It is useful for news, businesses, and personal or social use. Twitter is the social network that best caters to the quick, easy-access, on-the-go, and mobile lifestyle that our society is heading towards. We no longer feel the need to sit down on the couch and read an entire newspaper article, we now prefer to receive our news in 140-character increments on our mobile devices, wherever we may be.

Student

I have never noticed any promoted tweets on Twitter. I feel that when I am browsing through Facebook, they seem to stand out more to me. However, I rarely take the time to read them or even click on them. I feel like Twitter continues to be one of the top social media outlets in society. Based on the numbers showing that Twitter is increasing ad revenue, I can only imagine that their long-term prospects are positive. I believe that Twitter will remain popular with social media users, as will LinkedIn and Google+. All three of these outlets are used for different purposes, making each of them popular for certain reasons. Comparing Twitter's future to Facebook's, I think that Twitter will stay in the loop while Facebook might eventually fizzle out. I think that Facebook's main audience is starting to lean toward an older demographic, and I think that Twitter is a younger one. I think that people will start slowly switching over to Google+, just as people switched from MySpace to Facebook just a few years ago.

After facebook‘ successfull publication. It is kind harder for other media companies to follow facebook and go public. It is a challenge for Twitter.

Student

I recently have been noticing a lot more promoted tweets on Twitter. I choose to scroll right past them most of the time though, because I've become so used to ignoring ads on the internet. On Facebook, however, they are much more of a bother and stick out way more. I think this is due to the fact that my brain is classically conditioned to look at any and every picture that pops up into my newsfeed. I do believe that twitter will stick around for awhile and eventually die out like the rest of the social media platforms as the next best thing comes along. The ads aren't much of a bother because they are so expected now.

Student

I have seen promoted tweets on Twitter. I don't notice them as much as I notice promoted posts on Facebook though, they seem to blend in with my timeline more seemlessly than promoted Facebook posts. I kind of think that people don't pay attention to them though, and it's kind of the lazy way out for companies. Instead of creating interesting social media content that users want to engage in, they pay for their content to be promoted.

I think Twitter seems to be growing faster than the other networks mentioned. The other networks seem to be losing popularity while Twitter seems to be gaining it.

Student

It came to a surprise to me that Twitter is losing money, but thinking about it, I can see why. Ninety percent of the time I tweeted, I did it from my iPhone's dropdown, never checking and sifting through twitter. On the rare occasion I am on twitter, I rarely see advertisements, or the ones I do see are extremely passable. I'm not sure if it's my age, people's realization to over-exposure of social media, or what but I think companies such as Facebook and Twitter are going to need a face-lift on their systems.

Student

I understand how ads on Twitter can be frustrating but I think it is a great marketing tool. So many people follow celebrities and brands, so what better way to have an advocate promote a product, service, charity or whatever it may be, than on their Twitter account. Twitter is reliable because it offers people a direct form of communication with celebrities and this offers celebrities and marketers a direct and more trustworthy way of reaching an audience.

Student

I am completely agaist Advertising on Twitter. When i had a myspace, i felt as though it was completely full of advertsing for websites, games, etc. Now, I feel as though Facebook got like that. I cant just go on and look at posts and comments without getting some kind of add on the page. I honestly do not even look at the advertisements, so why do they even but them?

Student

I have seen the promoted tweets on twitter. I kinda find them to be a little annoying even though they really have little affect on me. When scrolling through my feed I never click on them. When something new comes out that is bigger and better, twitter will eventually phase out.

Student

I dont mind ads as long as they don't get in the way of what I'm doing, like pop-ups. I think that because of Twitter's popularity it will compete just fine against social media sites such as facebook, or linkein.

Student

I just tend to ignore promoted tweets. If it's not an account that I follow on twitter, I'm not generally inclined to care about what they tweet. I definitely thing it's a good marketing tool, because even if you do just ignore the tweet, at the very least your name and logo are front and center for all of twitter to see. I think twitter absolutely hast staying power, as it has quickly (and rightfully) become the primary source of news for all who wish to stay current. It is out-pacing even live television news in that regard. I don't see it as something that really can be compared to Facebook/LinkedIn/Google+ because it is a different animal. It is concise and to the point, and I think that is part of what makes it so intriguing.

Student

I personally get super annoyed of the promoted tweets on Twitter. Facebook is already full of advertisements all over your page and you can barely watch any YouTubes without getting a commerical. I used to admire Twitter for not putting any Ads on my timeline. Although they are pretty minimal, I can definitely see them getting out of control. Twitter needs to either keep the amount posted to what it is now, or stop them all together.

Student

When I use Twitter on my computer I tend to only focus on the actual tweets in front of me. The advertisements aren't that noticable so they are easy to just ignore. When I'm on my phone using the Twitter app, however, I am bombarded with advertisements. As I scroll through my timeline after about every 5 tweets and advertisement is place in between so I can't ignore it. I find it very annoying. I understand that they need to make money, but can't they do it a different way? I use Twiiter to be amused and stay updated. Not so I can feel like I'm watching TV, where its more commercials than the actual show itself.

Student

I particularly do not think the promoted tweets are a nuisance...yet. I am sure there will come a time when their only hope is to sell all the ad space that they possible can, especially when they are losing that much a year. However, I forsee Twitter continuing to be a substantial competitor to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+. In my opinion, Twitter is the fastest way to say what you are thinking and have the largest number of people see it in the shortest amount of time. With that being said everyone is constantly checking their Twitter timeline making the advertisement space very valuable. As it continues to grows as does the value of the space. Then you get the final product, a tweet followed by a promoted tweet, and repeat.

Student

I cannot tolerate ads on the social networks. They get in the way and slow down the enjoyment process. Twitter is an exceptional network, and has expanded to something that many people never would have dreamed of.  Twitter, in opposition to Facebook allows for direct contact with people whom you would never have the chance to interact with and reach. You can search #hashtags and access things quickly and directly. You do not necessarily have to be a friend of the person you are interested in following, and you can interact accordingly. People do not necessarily have ot respond however it is easy to access.

Student

I find these numbers to be extremely interesting. As a twitter user myself, I do sometimes have an occasional ad pop up on my feed. The fact that they sold more than $221 million worth of ads in the first half of 2013 shocks me because I don't typically have (or at least notice) too many on my feed personally. This raises some questions for me, does the amount of ads you see depend on the amount of people you are following/following you? I think this would make the most sense seeing as I only follow about 200 people and ads seem fairly rare from my perspective. I would be interested to see what other twitter users are typically experiencing as far as quantity of ads on a daily basis. I think twitter is "the next facebook." While it is hot and fairly new, I think like most social media outlets, its time near the top is limited to that of the release of the next big thing.

Student

Have seen a lot of promoted ads on twitter recently –can’t say I’m a fan. Most the ads I have seen are irrelevant to my life, which makes them seem a lot like they are spamming my twitter. I don’t think that what the companies are going for when they spend big money on these ads.

I don’t think this is what will kill Twitter – when compared to Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+. Twitter will figure out how to better place and target ads for its users. I believe Twitter will disappear due to the restrictions and limitations of what you can post. Other social media networks eliminate Twitter by figuring out how integrate detail and simplification – easy to use like Twitter but full networking capabilities like Google+ when you want it.

Student

I don't like the ads on twitter or facebook because no one likes ads and they are becoming very deceiving in that they look like posts from friends due to a friend "liking" that company. I often ignore these ads when I spot them and they are not enough to make me stop using the network.

I think twitter still has some time in its lifespan. Twitter is a great way to network as well as share and receive information on an unlimited variety of topics.
What I don't understand is why Twitter is losing money. It is one of the most popular social sites and the ad revenue looks good in growth terms. Why is the company losing money and how will they become a successfully traded company with such loses public?

Student

I hate ads on Twitter and even Facebook. I find them to be super annoying and I overlook all of them, so they aren't reaching out to me in a positive way whatsoever. I find that the Twitter ads are less annoying than Facebook, but i've noticed that Facebook's ads are typically more relavent to me and the things I search/websites I visit. I think that similar to Facebook and especially Myspace, Twitter will fade out and not be as popular eventually. Especially if another type of social media comes along to really compete with it. I personally think the social media scene will drift more toward sites directed to specific age groups. Like a social media JUST for college students, JUST for high-school students and JUST for adults. It may even be the same website, but as you age/schooling you select changes, it automatically moves you to a different part of the website.

Student

I am not a frequent Twitter users and I barely pay attention to the ads that appear as well. I used to be very active on Facebook in the past, logging in multiple times in a daily basis. But recently I only log in once or twice a day because of group messages and a method of communication between people I do not have phone numbers to. Compared to the many social media users out there, I would say I am in the group who barely notices tweets and other online ads on social media platforms. When I do notice the ads, I continue reading them by clicking on the ad if I find them interesting, and simply ignore the rest. In terms of Twitter comparing with Facebook, I find Facebook easier to use because I have been using it for a very long time now, but its a matter of perspective and some would disagree with me. I think Twitter filing its IPO is a good idea if they wish to keep the company running for a long time. I think Facebook and Twitter are both standing strong in their field and with constant improvements they will maintain their peak.

Student

I have noticed ads on Twitter and Facebook. On Facebook the ads are obvious but becoming more subtle. For example, There was an advertisement for some company that was disguised as a Facebook post from Will Smith. I was confused why his post was on my newsfeed until I realized it was an ad. Previously Facebook advertisements were obvious and while they were in the newsfeed they were seperated from posts by friends and pages I follow. Twitter ads appear just like any other tweets from people or businesses I follow. The only way I know it is an ad is because at the bottom of the tweet it says that it's an ad.

I think Facebook and Twitter will fair better with advertising because many people are so integrated with Facebook and Twitter that they won't give up those social networks. Ads will turn alot of people off on google plus because not that many people use google plus and ads turn people off. People are not going to start using a new social media website if they are immediatly bombarded with ads before they become engaged with the site.

Student

I am a rather frequent twitter user and I do not seem to notice the ads when they pop up in my feed. They are no different looking than anyone elses tweets so they can be easily scrolled by and ignored therefore they do not affect me very much. I have noticed that facebooks ads are quite annoying on the other hand. They are much larger than the ads on twitter and much more frequent. You can expect the ads to start increasing as time goes on because it is part of the overall business model. Without income, no company can survive. I also believe that all the social media sites have life cycles. Just as myspace came and went, facebook, twitter, and instagram will all fade away as they are replaced with new generation companies that are more geared towards popularity than profit. As profit of a social media company goes up, I think that popularity goes down due to many reasons.

Student

I have noticed several promoted tweets on twitter and they can either be interesting or annoying. It depends on what the ad is promoting. I don't mind them as much as the ads on facebook, they clutter up the page and takes away from the experience. I think that twitter will have to come up with other ways to generate revenue in addition to the advertisements if they want to survive. I personally think Facebook is nearing it's end, I don't use it nearly as much. As far as LinkedIn, I think they will be in business for a long time, I find that site more useful now than Facebook.

Student

I think online advertising just comes with the territory with social media.  I have seen promoted tweets on Twitter, but they don’t particularly bug me.  Online advertisements can easily be scrolled over, but often times the advertisements are tailored to my interests, catch my attention, and may even cause me to click on the advertisement.  I think individuals turn to twitter to create quick, attention grabbing messages to their networks.  Personally though, I think Facebook will thrive longer and I much prefer it over Twitter.

Student

I definitely prefer promoted tweets to the ads I see on Facebook. I have even followed a few companies based on their promoted tweets. I'm not a huge fan of Facebook anymore so that may factor into it but they seem like they are not as pushy as some of the ads I see on facebook. I think Twitter is here to stay and will continue to keep growing. The level of connection users have with people they follow seems much higher than on Facebook.

Twitter has rapidly made an influence on today's society, espeacially corresponding to todays social media. Twitter expands peoples knowledge because not only can you post your own updates on it, but you can hear about todays new and stay updated on specifically you as user want to stay updated upon.

One thing that I will stay true to is the fact that Twitter is the simpiliest form of social media. Often time it gets frustarting on social media tools like facbook or linked in or myspace that have adveritsments lining the perimeter and make it difficult to follow what you are actually doing. Instead with Twitter you are able to base it aroudn your own opinions and make your general profile about what you want to focus on opposed to what the social media site wants you to follow. This makes it a lot easier for a user to make it about themselves. For Twitter to become a promotional social media site I personally think would hurt their business. I think that as an alternative that could make it available for users to follow certain promotions opposed to having constant media all over the place. This could only benefit the users and the website. Everyone gets teh benefit of the doubt in this case.

Student

The promoted tweets on the site are far better than other promotional posts on other social media websites. They are less intrusive, short, and are well written. I have actually followed certain athletes or companies due to the promoted tweets. However, I do not want to see them become like Facebook, where it dominates the user interface. I have decreased my use of Facebook simply due to the fact I am bombared with posts I do not want to see and obscure any posts made by my friends. I think Twitter, with the use of promoted tweets, will continue to thrive as long as Facebook.

Student

I recently opened a Twitter account, not only for this class but for journalism as well. Since I have recently opened one, I do not notice many promoted tweets. I am not sure if it is because I do not have many followers or follow people/ companies. I am not surprised that Twitter does this. Since one of their top competitors, Facebook has advertising. I think it is smart for these social media sites to promote and advertise since this has become a new market to reach out to people. Not only for our generation, but for baby boomers as well. For the long-term aspect, I think Twitter will be just as popular as Facebook, LinkedIn and Google +. Twitter is growing and becoming a popular form of communicating and keeping up to date on current events. In addition to communicating, this is not only a form to talk to friends and family, but a way classes are using to talk to students.

For the future prospect of Twitter going public I’ve heard a number of things. One that the number of Twitter users is skewed through the use of computer programs that tweet automatically daily and these programs do count as part of the 215 million users (heard this on NPR). This could create a problem with investors being skeptical of the user numbers and the growth of the company. However, I’ve see huge progress in Twitter including promoted tweets.  When compared to similar companies like Facebook, LinkedIn and Google + I believe it will set behind Facebook because of it’s lack of users.

Although I have only been a Twitter user for about 4 months, I have seen a plethora of promoted tweets on the Social Media platform. From sponsorships to companies, and products, even sporting events, Twitter is used for a variety of promotional tactics. I personally believe that these promoted tweets are outstanding, because of the short and sweet nature of them. Unlike other forms of media such as blogging and even Facebook, Twitter has the ability to get the point out instantly, quickly and most importantly effectively. Additionally, I think that the long term prospects of Twitter are very promising, even more so than those of Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+. I feel this way because of the growing popularity of the social media site, usage rates continue to climb and Twitter continues to bring in more and more money at an exponential rate. I believe that it is inevitable for Twitter to overcome others as the most effective and profitable social media platform.

This story counldn't have come out at a better time. For the first time this weekend I spent a substantial amount of time updating my twitter. I followed about 250 new people that i had interest in. These accounts that I followed were news agancies, sports teams, professional athelets, cleberties, and personal friends of mine that i now enjoy following. In the past two days i have gotten all of my news and updats from twitter. I didn't realize that twitter could be so useful. There are alot of things on twitter that aren't relavent but if you know where to look and how to use the site it can be very useful. I think that it is a tremendous idea for the company to go public. They are at the peak of their success in my opinion because there are so many people and companies on twitter. When the company goes public I think it will be very similar to when facebook went public serveral years ago.

I have noticed the use of promoted tweets over the course of the last few months. At first, I was unaware of what this random tweet on my timeline was, but then i noticed the words "promoted tweet" at the bottom of it. I think its a strong way of gaining a following on Twitter. Sometimes they lead me into something that i am interested in and will follow up on. Saying that, i am a fan of promoted tweets, as long as they dont become obsessive. Facebook came into a publicly-traded company over the past year and i think there hasn't been much of a difference from a users standpoint other than more ad's. I don't believe Twitter has a larger following than Facebook, but definitely more active. Twitter is growing every day and is an app i use way more than Facebook. I believe that Twitter will be better off in the long-run than Facebook.

Twitter going public is definetly something major for them, not to mention, major for their revenue. I think them going public will make twitter better, having the backing as a public company will only enhance their profits. As for advertisments, well, I am not too fond of that. I always get annoyed at youtube ads and the more annoying ones, Twitter's advertisements, at the moment, aren't too bad but I imagine they will get worse. I noticed the promoted tweets and am not too big of fan of them. I do think twitter will have very good long-term prospects, maybe even as big as facebook. Facebook is more interactive because of just how big it is but twitter has been getting increasingly large over the years. I believe the ads will help them achieve this, getting more ads and more ad space prospects will make them more attractive and definetly increase their revenues.

Student

I have never really gotten into Twitter but I do have one. I have recently started to see promoted tweets and advertisements. However, they do not really bug me at all. They are easily ignored. While that is great for me that they are easily ignored, I can surmise that it is good for the companies doing the advertising. In any case, I think that Twitter will be around for a long time. While I might not be part of it, I know that many of my peers are constantly consuming material from twitter. It has been said that Facebook is also on its way out, however, I still see people constantly on and actively using Facebook. Seeing this, makes me feel that Twitter is in a good position.

Student

I am constantly checking Twitter.  I occassionally notice the advertisements while scrolling through my Twitter feed.  I do not find them as obvious and sometimes annoying like Facebooks advertisements can be.  Recently I have been noticing promoted tweets on Twitter as well.  These advertisements are definitely something that does not bother me.  I can just kind of scroll pass them with ease.  As for the long-term prospects, I believe Twitter is going constantly daily.  To me Facebook is starting to get old and it is still around.  If that is any indication of Twitter, than I see Twitter sticking around for some time.

Student

Being a new Twitter user I haven't really noticed to ads enough for them to bother me or really stand out. I'm used to advertisements on my social media sites such as Facebook. The ones that pop up on there never really bother me as they usually pertain to something I'm interested in. Based on the growth of Twitter, I don't see it's popularity dying down anytime soon. Even though I'm not the biggest twitter fan right now, I think I will eventually really enjoy it seeing as its something that can be used to a business and personal advantage.

I have had a twitter accound since i was a sophmore in high school and when it first started it never had promoted tweets.  Recently, i feel like the amount of online advertising and promoted accounts via twitter has increased exponentially.  Its annoying that i get these advertisements on my home page because most of the ads have nothing to do with me.

While Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google + have many similarities, Twitter stands apart from these social networks.  Twitter is all about statuses and sharing a quick thought/ picture/ video/ etc.  Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+ are all proflles, whether social or business oriented they promote sharing updates of ones life.  Twitter also was the first social network to have hashtags that i recognized and they create buzz and trend topics.  I believe Twitter will only update their site and they will not convert their site into a Facebook type social media website.

Twitter is a very unique form of social media, which has hit society by storm. I often find myself hearing news on twitter before you hear it anywhere else. Sports updates, and urgent news updates come up on twitter almost instantly. It has a far different use compared to that of linked in or Facebook. Honestly the future for twitter is endless. It’s proven to be affective for advertising as well as its other millions of uses.

Everyday millions of tweets are promoted for business. They all show up on your feed, and many are attention getters. Businesses have their own twitter accounts that are promoted by different people who can relate to that certain business or benefit by advertising their product. For example a candy company can post a tweet about a new treat they are promoting, and let’s says a candy store has recently started selling this product. That company could then re-tweet their new candy bar and reach far more people from the followers of the candy bar manufacture.

Twitters influence on society in endless. People find out most of their news and other important information from twitter. It replaces the need for certain websites and blogs by having all those tools in one place, and by allowing you to choose what to follow.

I had been watching the news reguarding Twitter  filing its IPO to become a publicly traded company and had seen the increase in sponsored ads that had been occuring in the last year. These sponsorship ads that are going to steadily increase as the size of Twitter increases. Advertising will slowly become a hindereance and will render Twitter obsolete as many forms of social media have been concidered in the past; with Myspace and slowly people are moving away from Facebook.I belive the world is adapting and changing quickly and so are social media trends giving the lifespan if many of these companies to be indefinate besides Google which spans the technological world through every field and is a powerhouse. ADvertising is standard in social media and will always be but must be subtle and non intrusive and over time i feel that will become a problem.

I am not suprised Twitter is becomming publically traded, considering their huge growth. I have noticed Twitter's promoted Tweets and at first, they really bothered me. Now, I am so used to advertisements on my social media pages that they do not phase me. They are often about things I am interested in reading further anyway, so it doesn't hurt. I also think Twitter already has so much information that it doesn't make a huge difference in my usage of Twitter.
