With more and more people "cutting the cord" and dumping cable/satellite TV for Internet video (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV or Roku), it's no surprise that online video advertising is booming.
According to a recent report from FreeWheel, a company that manages web video ad placement, video ad views are growing even faster than online video plays:
Lots of people pay attention to TV ads - especially during major events like the Super Bowl when new ads come out. I've found myself paying attention to online video ads more and more - especially on sites like YouTube that let me skip past ads that aren't interesting or relevant to me.
Do you pay close attention to web video ads? What are your favorite ones? What don't you like?
Comments & Feedback
I for one, cannot stand online video ads and do my best to avoid them, the problem is sometimes you can't. When I go to look up a video on Youtube that's exactly what I want to see, not some advertisement for a product I likely do not care about. There are ways around this, often times you are able to skip ads, there are also extensions that you can download to eliminate them completely. However, in the instances when I cannot "Zip" or "Zap" the ads I generally get very annoyed.
Ads are ads. Whether they are on cable television or based around online video ads. The key difference for me is the fact that ads online are timed while the ads on cable tv aren't.
Think about it... You're watching the new Office episode on a Friday afternoon and you see in the corner, 60 seconds left... What do you do? Wait around for 60 seconds? No, you go to the bathroom or you open a new tab for Facebook. You never consider watching the ads. When you watch a VeVo video on Youtube you always "skip ad." This is the option we are receiving and people take advantage of it.
What web ads are starting to do is pay off for your ads. Only this goodwill is noticed by the audience and in that short period of time you can maybe get a 5 second excerpt of a company.
Cable TV never informs the audience how much longer commercials will run until the show commences. This forces the audience to remain watching the TV so they don't miss the program they were watching. More attention will be spent by TV viewers to make sure they don't miss any part of the episode they are watching.
People may use online videos as their main source of watvhing TV but online ads aren't really being watched they are only be heard, at best.
Our generation is so overwhelmed with advertising, it's ridiculous. Everywhere you look, all day long, there are endorsements, ads, or other things that are trying to attract your attention. Do I pay attention to web video ads? Honestly, very rarely. If I can skip them, I do. I see enough stuff on TV, hear it on the radio, and see it all over the city that I really don't care for more of it shoved in my face. I understand the effort that companies are making, since most of my generation's time is spent online these days, but seriously, it just gets to be too much. I would like to just go online and do whatever I have (or want) to do, without being bombarded with ads (even if they are cool videos, or stylish banners on the side Facebook-esque style).
I am definitely guilty of consistently replacing television with the Internet. I have noticed an increase in the number of ads on YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu. I feel that creating ads for the Internet is risky business. Many people have negative attitudes and emotions towards these ads because of the interruption. Regarding YouTube’s skip button, THESE ads need to be even more strategically created because the company literally has 5 seconds to hook the audience. I notice every once in a while an ad catches my attention and I wait for the entirety of the ad to play before watching the video content.
One of the most memorable ads that I saw on YouTube recently was actually the promo trailer for the new movie called “The Internship” with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. The first 5 seconds is direct and impactful. It strategically plays a catchy song that is relevant to a youthful generation which caught my attention.

Online ads are risky, but when they are performed strategically they have the potential to be quite effective.
I personally ahte video advertising online. Its bad enough taht some of the sites have banner advertisements all over but the video is something you can't avoid. I almost alway mute my computer so I dont' have to watch the ad and often switch to a new tab and look at somethign else till the video is over.
Personally, I find web ads to be very annoying and I rarely pay any attention to them. Most of the time if an ad pops up before a video I'm watching I will skip it right away, and the only way I stay to watch is if the ad some how catches my attention in the five seconds it shows before it lets me switch. I can say that I am on the computer and online way more then I watch TV but I am constantly doing something online and don't want to take time to watch an ad where as when I do watch TV I'm in a more laid back mood and I'm more patient with TV ads and will pay more attention.
I don't pay attention to web video ads. In all honesty, I found them annoying sometimes because when I want to just to watch a video, I have to wait atleast a few minute for it to start because of the advertisement. Just recently I added an ad blocker to my web browser which makes me a hyprocrite because I'm an advertising major.
I don’t think I can give a straight answer as to if I pay close attention to web video ads. Just like regular ads on TV, if it’s something that interests me or something quirky or weird, I’ll probably pay attention, but if it’s another generic car driving through (circle one: forest, countryside, future-world, nondescript highway), or any other example of a bland TV ad then I won’t.
I would probably say that I pay less attention to web video ads than TV ads. I think the reason behind this is that they are so easy to ignore. On sites like YouTube, you sometimes have the ability to skip an ad, but even if not, I usually find myself going back to what I was doing in another browser tab until the ad is over. This behavior for me comes partially out of boredom, but also a little out of spite.
When videos really started being a possibility on the web, with fast computers and high speed internet, it was just an endless stream free video content that you didn’t have to take a break from unless you wanted to. Then advertisers started moving in, pushing the same junk they force me to watch on TV. I understand that advertising is an important part of the internet, but there has to be better ways of doing it. I like how YouTube allows you to skip ads you don’t find interesting, or how Hulu lets you hide ads that don’t interest you. This allows ads to be curtailed to your interest, which might actually make me want to watch one, but not everyone has figured this out yet.

I do not pay attention to web video ads because I believe they are very annoying. The favorite video ads would have to be the funny ones that are so random because it hard to have a favorite ads because all ads are different. The reason I don’t like ads because they take up time and space and they always like ten seconds long, which I have to watch a random ad, that I not interested in.
I find that I rarely pay attention to web video ads. Mostly, I see them as annoyance that prevent me from watching the video I'm trying to watch. The most irritating aspect of we video ads, in my opinion, is when I'm watching multiple videos in a row on the same website and I have to see the same ad repeatedly. They would be more likely to capture my attention if I saw a new ad on each video, or, at least, rarely saw a repeat ad.
I think I pay more attention to web video ads than ads on the television because the web video ads usually have things pertaining to me. They also many times let me pick which ad I would like to view which makes it much more enjoyble to watch. My favorite web video ad would be one for H&R Block, the advertisment isn't the best but I really like the music and sound effects they use during the ad. It is also very short which makes the advertisement less annoying. I don't like that they usually repeat many of the ads over and over so while watching the show you constantly see the same ad. If they were to mix it up a little more it would be way more enjoyable.
I believe more people will stay on advertisement if it pertains to the subject they are watching. If I am browsing YouTube for movie trailers and a AD tralier pops up, I am going to sit through it seeing it is revelant to what i have choosen to watch. I think advertisements need to get smarter with how they start there ad because if they don't grab the viewers attention in the first five seconds, it will probably be skipped.
I honestly don't pay too much attention to online ads. They just remind me of TV/cable ads which tend to be very annoying when I just want to watch a specific show without interruptions. Being able to watch shows online now allows you to watch with minimal interruptions, which I like. At the same time, Youtube has become extremely annoying with its advertising. Granted, you can skip most ads after 5 seconds, it's still annoying to have to do when you just rather have the video pop up instantly after clicking on it. Soemtimes I do find myself watching an online ad completely but this is rarely as no specific ones come to mind. Overall, I understand the growth of online video ads but I'm also glad to have more options to skip over them as opposed to TV ads.
Online advertising especially in places such as YouTube has become more popular. Sometimes my attention is caught while at other times it is more difficult. I cannot remember any particular add but I do know as a consumer it is wise to get my attention very quickly. Usually when I am interring sites such as YouTube I am in there for a specific reason. Usually I want to get to where I am initially getting to as quick as possible.
As a consumer I am interring YouTube for various reasons. It could be for my entertainment, knowledge, or some sort of interest. So as an advertiser you would have to grab my specific attention in hopes that it overcomes the interest of why I am originally on YouTube.
With that in mind that is the difficult part of an advertisers job is to think out of the box on how to capture the majorities attention. As my example is for me as an individual. According to the statistics shown it clearly shows the increase of ads being watched by consumers. It seems this huge increase will need for newer ideas of creativity to continue to capture people's attention through acclimating time period.
The challenge is to find a way to capture the majority of consumers attention through a short period of time. During this time you would capture them and give them knowledge of a certain product or service that will intrigue them to explore and possible be a potential customer.
I personally do not pay close attention to web video ads. In fact, when you asked what my favorite video ads were, I couldn't even recall one, even though I am exposed to them multiple times every day. When it comes to video ads, I just watch the seconds count down until I am able to skip it. If advertisers want to reah a majority of their target market through web video ads, I think it is critical to really capture the cosumers attention in that first five seconds in the ad. Without a unique and attention-grabbing introduction to the web video ad, it is almost a given that there will be a large decrease in impressions.
Super Bowl, the grandest event of Television Commercial just happened two weeks ago. When every advertiser is talking about the most expensive time — 100 thousand dollars per second, we have to acknowledge the TVC is still the most popular and regular advertisement form. Even though in this few years, the web video ads developing so fast, but the TVC’s position is cast in iron. However, the web video ads have so many advantages that TVC has not cause of its limitation. For example, clients can run their advertisement longer on the web, so they can show more and more features to audiences. The web video ads also can add some reactions in it to make the advertisement more interesting.
Recently I have only been watching tv using netflix and hulu online. I like that the web video ads are much shorter than if you were watching a program on tv. Since you cannot skip them I pay attention more to these ads. My favorite ones are the interactive ads.
From an advertising students' perspective online ads are a fantastic opportunity to advertise for a product, and is becoming a very utilized market. However, personally I am annoyed by online ads, if advertisers want to get my attention with an online ad, they must do it within the first 5-11 seconds, which happens to be the moments before I am given the choice to skip the ad. My favorite part of online advertisements are the option to skip the ads. This feature should not be removed, but viewed as a challenge from advertisers to capture their target audiences with in the limited time frame before the 'skip' option. The more captivating an online advertisement is, the more likely I am to pay attention to it. If the ad is extremely exciting I may even choose to watch the rest of the ad, which in my opinion, is a huge success for advertisers. Online ads should be viewed as a lithmus test of sorts, allowing them to figure out what ads are successful and how they can tweak the ad in anyway. The 'skip' option is like a program analyzer tool used for designing movie trailers.
To be honest I tend to ignore most every video ad, particularly the ones on youtube. I find them intrusive and unwanted therefore I tend to associated a negative feeling with the advertisements and the brand as a result. I feel like advertisers should place a banner or ads along the side of the website which in turn would be less invasive and provide consumers with the brand but not feel like they have to look at it. That being said I do enjoy the e-trade baby ad's they tend to humor me so I will watch them even if they are intrusive.
I actually do not pay attention to web video ads. When they come on I can not wait to click the button that says skip ad or if that is not allowed I just do something else for the 30 secdons or so it is on. They are extremely annoying an a waste of time because it makes me more angry that I can not watch a video right when I want to which reflects poorly on the company advertising.
I actually don't pay attention much to online video ads. As much time as I spend online, I don't frequent YouTube as much as other people. I'm embarrassed to say it, but I'm usually one of the last people watching popular videos like "Gangnam Style". I pay attention a lot more to television ads than internet. I actually find it really annoying to sit through ads, even for only 5 seconds, before being able to watch a quick video clips. I especially hate it when I'm watching re-runs of old shows from say, MTV, and I have to watch the same 3 ad's over and over. I rather watch 100 different ads on tv than the same 3. I think online video ads are a great marketing tool though, and it allows for free access to users.
I think that the need for online video and ads is growing. People are not able to watch everything they want to because of busy schedules and rely on the internet. Lots of networks make this possible but some still do not. I think that internet ads, though annoying, are going to become more and more common in the near future. I also agree with the idea that we are able to skip ads that do not appeal to us on websites such as youtube. Every once in a while I will catch myself watching an entire ad even though I had the option of skipping in after about 5 seconds.
As someone that works with a lot of these ads, I can say it is most certainly a developing market. At Comcast Spotlight we have created a digital team in the past few months. Previously, our digital component was based largely around the placement of web banners as we sell inventory on a lot of network homepages, but now it is transitioning to ads for on-demand programming and also mobile advertisements while being folded into the traditional spot teams. What I find is a lot of companies buying the same kind of inventory over and over - I constantly have to listen to the same ads when watching The Daily Show on Hulu (can't watch it, I have to work of course) and often they annoy me. Hulu has an ad swap feature that also comes in handy, and I like the ability to be able to choose to watching a long-form or movie trailer and then an uninterrupted program for watching the longer ad. This flexibility makes it much more user friendly - sometimes I pick the companies I least like if given the option because that costs them money, so it is like I am able to dictate their finances a few cents at a time.
There aren’t many online video ads I pay attention to. Most of the time I am waiting for the five seconds to be up so I can pass the ad and continue onto whatever I was in the middle of doing. Many times I view them as annoying but being guilty I have been known to watch the movie trailers that play before my videos on YouTube. Just today I was waiting to play a song and a trailer for the new movie “The Internship” came on. Normally I would pass right through but never hearing of this movie before I started to pay more attention. By the end I couldn’t wait to hear more about the movie. So I guess that I am a tough love for these ads. I hate to hear about the new phone ads but the movie ads I can’t get enough of.
I rarely pay any attention at all to web video ads and I work as a web advertising manager at a college newspaper. I work with them a lot and I know what gets my attention and what doesn't. Not very many of them do. I skip almost every single one of them. I don't remember actually watching one until today. Today i was looking up a music video and I saw an ad for a new movie coming out with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson so I actually watched all 2 minutes or so of it. I thought it was pretty funny so maybe I will pay a little more attention to some web video ads. If they are boring, skipping it will be the first thing I do. I don't like the ones that are annoying and/or not funny at all.
I do pay attention to the online ads that I get. Usualy I have no intrest in buying what they are selling but I know enough to realize that most the ads that a person sees while browsing on the internet are ads that are likely targeted to them based on past browsing history so alot of the ads I see might actually be of instrest to me so I make a point to watch. One ad that I have been seeing lately that I like is the hyundai ad with the kids that want to play football. It was orginally a superbowl ad but I have been seeing it alot lately on youtube and still watch it everytime because I think it was a great ad.
One thing I don't like are ads that have sound and play on their own and that you are not able to stop, this usually makes me leave the page and not go to it again. I hope that eventually advertisers realize that the are hurting their business by making annoying ads like this and that the page owners know that it is driving traffic away.
I would agree with this completely. I have actually noticed recently that I have been paying more attention to the ads, in years past on YouTube or watching TV shows I would automatically click skip ad or pull up another window, but I've noticed recently that I will even sometimes watch a whole ad even if I'm allowed to skip it. One ad that I watched all the way through the other day was the new Audi high school prom ad, I was captured right away so I continued to watch it through. I still can't stand low budget ads that are poor quality.
I like most of the web video ads because some of them are what people would like to see. Like video games or movie ads usually appear before the videos for young generations. I also like the ads which are related to the web pages I previously checked. For example, I was looking for new boots on some of the major online stores. Next, I saw an ad promoting UGG’s boots just before a YouTube video. However, there are some of the web video ads are not attractive to viewers including me. Some of the ads were lack of interesting point at the first, so viewer would most likely to skip them before they saw the brand.
I use a lot of online video websites like Hulu and Netflix, but I also use online music sites like Pandora and Spotify. When I watch TV I don't pay much attention to the ads, but I do have a few favorites, like the Geico commercials, Old Spice, etc. However, I find online video ads extremely annoying. When I sit down to watch an hour long TV show, commercials are expected, but when I want to watch a 3 minute music video on Youtube and I get a 30 second commerical, its frustrating. Now, that is not to say that online video advertising isnt a booming business and a great market to get involved in. Internet use is at its highest rates yet and it would be stupid for a company to not take part in it.
I think that this article is spot on. I realized after being on youtube.com how many ads are now playing. I think because they are online you are forced to watch them because you are unable to “switch the station”. When I am searching for a song or video, there is always a 30 second annoying ad that I am unable to skip. It is not only on youtube, but I watch netflixs all the time and have to wait for the commercials to be over. Don’t get me wrong I love watching the super bowl commercials and even sometimes holiday commercials, but I hate being online and having to sit through another ad!
Personally I hate web video ads.
That being said, they are sometimes effective.
For the most part, when I'm loading a video up on Youtube for example, an ad might pop up and I don't have enough time to press the "mute" button.
I hate them because if I'm watching a 2 minute Youtube video, I don't want to have to watch a 30 second ad before my video.

Like an type of advertisement, I find it hard to pay attention when a product or service doesn't directly apply to my wants or needs. I tune out what I don't want to hear, and I listen when I want to. I have however realized that I find web videos overall more effective. I don't know if it's because it's usually the only thing standing between me and the video I've specifically chosen to watch or if it's because they are more entertaining. I don't find them as annoying as TV commericals because they certainly don't last as long and many of them have the option to 'skip'. I am interested to see how web videos will evolve or the next few years. So far I have really enjoyed Internet Explorer's: Child of the 90's video and Audi's: Prom video. Both appealed to me and gave me a reason to positively talk about them to friends and family.
I pay as much attention to online video ads as i do to television commercials, which is not a whole lot. I appreciate the fact that sometimes you are able to skip an ad after a few seconds. But overall, I find them to processed or internalized by me in the same way. One nice thing about Hulu ads is that you can give feedback on whether the ad appealed to your or not, and that helps tailor the ads to your interests.
I watched the Super Bowl ad at Youtube, The Clydesdales: "Brotherhood".
I think this is one of the best Superbowl commercials in years, and I like the idea of the horse ditching his Budweriser 'uniform' before running over to see an old friend. Granted, the 'product-placement' component of the story was lessened by a few seconds, however, the intergrity of the piece held up rather well.
I don’t really watch internet video, the one internet video site that I use every once in a while is Youtube. I don’t find myself annoyed by the ads on there because if I don’t find them interesting I can just skip them or ignore them. However there are ads that you can’t skip but there are also programs you can download to block all ads from your Youtube videos, so I guess that could be a solution for that problem. I do pay close attention to ads that are humorous such as the Progressive ads or the smart phone ads.
During the superbowl is a time where I definetly pay most attention to TV advertisments. I also enjoy watching them on daily basises as well. However, I'm not a big fan of web ads and never really have been. Usually when I am on youtube, I just skip the ad to get to the video I want to view. The only web ad I can think of that was enjoyable was a "Coors Light" ad a couple of years back. This ad was also seen on TV, usually on Sundays revolving around football.
I personally try and avoid internet video sites that have ads during the playing of shows and movies, which is why I almost exclusively use Netflix for my TV needs. While some of the ads can be funny, most don’t have anything in them that interest me so therefore I have no need to watch them. Also I feel as though when it cuts to an ad on my computer, it tends to be followed with complications such as my computer freezing or not loading in the same spot that I was previously in.
I like certain aspects of online video advertising much more than TV advertising. Like you said, it is very nice being able to skip the ads on YouTube that I have no interest in watching. However, I have noticed that online video advertising is much more repetitive than TV commericals. I watch a few TV shows on abc online. Since the Superbowl, I have seen the VW apparent robbery ad multiple times, every time I watch a show at every commercial break. At first I thought the ad was funny but now I mute my computer everytime there is a break in the show.
When I'm on a site like YouTube and the video you are watching gives you the option to "Skip Ad" I usually skip it. I find them annoying and pointless. One time, however, I was about to skip an ad and it was the "2013 World of Red Bull" commercial which was awesome. It was beautifully crafted with the scenery showed within the commerical and it was inspriational when it discussed "finding your line and going beyond it." A lot of the times when I'm doing some online shopping or just searching the web, personalized ads for products I may have searched for in the past show up (regular ads as well as videos). It's amazing how random websites are able to connect to your recent online views and place advertisements within your view. I don't really mind finding these personal ads on my internet screen, but when it doesn't give me the option to skip over it, it does get rather annoying.
When it comes to the advertisements that pop-up and play before videos on Youtube, I don't pay attention at all. I usually skip the ad right when it allows you and don't listen. If it is a longer ad that cannot be skipped, I have another tab open that I will mess around on until the ad is over and can watch the Youtube clip. I can't really say I have favorite ones since I do not watch them, but I don't mind movie advertisements because I always like seeing what new movies are coming out so ads on Netflix and stuff I don't mind.
I watch Hulu a lot instead of normal TV and find that I pay more attention to those ads more so than I do the ads on TV. When there is a commercial on TV I get up and move around for the three minutes instead of just sitting on the couch. I also like that the ads on Hulu are only for around 30 sec so you can easily tune them out or just watch them. Another interesting feature that web ads over TV ads is that they can be personalized to ones likes. I do notice that when the ads are personalized to my liking I watch them all the way through and also more intently.
I've also noticed the changes that web sites like YouTube and ABCGo (the viewer for ABC's shows) have implemented to get more views for ads. And as a frequent user of those types of video services, I still avoid them like the plauge. I ingore commercials until I have the chance to skip them, or until they are over. I rarely actually pay attention to an ad, but the ones I have noticed are usually the same two on repeat over and over. One is almost always about laundry detergent or vehicles, and the other completely random. Either way, I still don't watch them. Most likely I will never pay attention to those types of ads.
Whenever I see the short clips of ads on YouTube and other websites, I tend to find them annoying and useless, but there are some that won't even let me skip. For those, I just end up watching; one was Nikon where a guy tries to take a picture of an animal but the crowd of people behind him scares it away. It is humorous and funny at the same time. It gets repetitive after that, so it's easy for everyone to want to avoid them. Also, even for tv commercials, the product has to be something to my interest, such as cars. If it's not, then I would most likely just not give my attention.
Typically, I quickly move past the ads on videos and other forms of online media. However, occasionally there is an ad that captures my attention. Typically these ads are ads I have not already seen on television and have so relevance to the video I am watching. Ads are harder to ignore on Twitter and Facebook, interestingly. They are directly on the newsfeed and twitter feed seamlessly integrating with updates from friends and other liked organizations. For that reason I find them increasingly more and more frustrating.
I spend a lot of time on the web, and most the time I choose to skip through web video ads when they allow me too. There are times, however, that some make an impact and I enjoy watching them. An example can be IKEA's campaign expressing to make room in your life by using IKEA products. The campaign transforms a hoarder's house full of records all over the place into a professional, contemporary DJ studio. This video caught my attention because I love electronic music and can relate to some of it (not the hoarding). Feel free to check the video at this link: IKEA Presents, Harry Love's Records. Make Room for Your Life
Personally, I have no interest in web ads whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I find myself trying to avoid these. If I am on the internet, I wan't to view what I came on the internet for. I'm fine if I watch TV and see an ad, because that's where they belong, not online. I can't say that I've even watched an ad that's on YouTube, since most of the time I just skip them to go view what I came to see. It's rather annoying when companies attempt to advertise on the internet. It seems that when a company does this, it turns consumers away.
When I choose to watch a TV show or video clip online, I hate when the show or clip is interrupted by web video ads. I rarely pay attention to when the ads play, usually checking my Facebook or Twitter instead when they come up. That is why I like to use Netflix where there is no commercials, or I like when Hulu gives you the option of watching one longer commercial in the beginning of your program instead of the show being interrrupted multiple times with web videos. I honestly do not have a favorite web video because I rarely pay attention to them or I skip them all together if possible.
To be honest, I despise web video ads. When I go to look up a Youtube video, or want to watch a TV show, I'm on the website to ONLY view what I WANT to view. When I am bombarded with different web ads, prohibiting me from easily accessing a simple video, I get frustrated. Luckily, on YouTube, you can sometimes press "Skip Ad" and get away from the advertisements. Sadly, I do not have a favorite web video ad... and probably never will. :/
Personally, I hate when ads interrupt my online watching experience or on YouTube. When I watch tv on my computer, sometimes it is because I wasn't able to originally watch it when it was on and sometimes it was because I would prefer to watch it alone. When I watch it on some crappy college internet connection, I would prefer to not have to worry about the Ads loading too. Also, during online shows, the ads show up at much more random times and sometimes seem to cut off part of the show. I definitely think I was commercials more when they are on the TV rather than online. The only thing I do like is that on Hulu you can say if an ad is relevant to you or sometimes choose which ad you would like to watch. But I would prefer to just keep the Ads to the TV.
