With more and more people "cutting the cord" and dumping cable/satellite TV for Internet video (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV or Roku), it's no surprise that online video advertising is booming.
According to a recent report from FreeWheel, a company that manages web video ad placement, video ad views are growing even faster than online video plays:
Lots of people pay attention to TV ads - especially during major events like the Super Bowl when new ads come out. I've found myself paying attention to online video ads more and more - especially on sites like YouTube that let me skip past ads that aren't interesting or relevant to me.
Do you pay close attention to web video ads? What are your favorite ones? What don't you like?

A lot of my friends said they just watch TV news in the morning. Except that period of time, they don't watch TV at all. They reasons might be first, they don't have time. Second, they can find the TV dramas online when they have time to watch it. I have the same experience. The most recent TV commercial I watched was on Super Bowl Live. I usually watch commercials when I use Hulu or open some webpage. Or sometimes I get them on Facebook when my friends share them. I feel it's different between TV commercials and online videos because people have more controls on online videos. We can choose mute them or close them. And online viedos, if effective, are much more effective than TV commerical because we choose to watch them, especially when friends share them to us. My favorite online vidoe is definately Cadbury- eyebrow dance. I don't like pure selling ads. They are to annoying.
I do usually pay attention to web video ads when I'm on YouTube, Pandora or even a Yahoo News story that is a video. I do like how on Yahoo and YouTube you can skip over the ad if you don't like it after a few seconds. As for Pandora, you can't skip their ads and sometimes it's annoying when you're playing music and hanging out with friends and your station gets interrupted by one of their ads.
I think web video ads catch your eye because there's movement and sound. It usually can display more information than a regular ad that is posted on the internet. I also think this is why QR codes became so popular. When a company wants to explain more information or show something to their customers, but can't on a little sign or pamphlet... they use a QR code. Now, customers can be shown a video, sound and it's also more interactive.
I actually do not pay attention to web video ads while I'm on the interenet. When I am on a site like Youtube, the majority of the time it is for a specific reason and I want to see something quickly. If it gives me the option of skipping the ad, I ALWAYS do. However there are things that I do like every so often When I am on Facebook just to pass the time, I like when the site posts "things I have recently viewed" from websited I normally shop on. Thos ads have given me a push to actually go back and purchasae an item I was unsure about buying earlier.
I pay close attention to the video ads that are interesting or relevant to me. I like the movie trailer ads the best. Even if it's not a movie I wanted to see, I always like to see how they made the trailer. I don't like the long 30 second ads on YouTube that you can't skip. I believe they should always come with a skip button because they may not be relevant to you. And they annoy me because I can remember a time when YouTube was ad-free. But I see why advertisiers would want to advertise there since people are spending more time watching TV online.
I think that web video ads are a genius idea for advertisers to use. As a consumer I have sort of a love/hate feeling about the ads. When watching videos on Youtube, Vevo, and other sites, I have started to notice more and more video ads recently. I do not mind web video ads if they are short, under 30 seconds, and if they are a product/service or brand that I am interested in. I also do not mind if they are longer or do not interest me but I am able to skip them after just a few seconds. Although, the option to skip ads is not always available which can be frustrating.
The web video ads that I don't like are those that are longer than 1 minute or do not pertain to anything that I am interested in. When these ads pop-up on videos and I cannot skip them I tend to just switch to another internet tab until they are over. I think that many people find ways to avoid the ads if at all possible. Some of my favorite web video ads are ads that are short and to the point and allow you to continue on to the video you want to watch. If the videos are humorous or catch my attention than I do not mind watching them before web videos.
You know, as much as I should, I don't pay attention to online ads. I'm usually impatient when it come to getting to the shows I want to watch online. This may a problem that advertisers need to solve. Perhaps there needs to be a way to make online ads more engaging for the veiwers.
