I heard of The Hunger Games first from friends reading the series.  Then suddenly over the last few months I saw it all over my Tumblr dashboard and other social media outlets.  I got so sick and tired of it.  It burned me out.  I now have no desire what so ever to read the series or pay to watch the movie what so ever.  Maybe it's silly of me, but when someone overkills it, it pushes me in the opposite direction.  I realize that as creators of this madness we can not necessarily control the sharing and reposting rates of the world at large.  I do  also very much appreciate the seemingly overnight sensation that thismoment and Lionsgate were able to create.  That is something that I would absolutely love to learn how todo.

First off, let me say everyone needs to see the movie if you haven't. I didn't read the books before seeing the movie, and I thought it was still amazing. It is a great concept that has been spreading across the internet and social media sites over the past few months. Seeing the movie made me want to start reading the books as well. Look around in all your classes and I'm sure you will see atleast one person carrying around one of the books from the series. I am following @TheHungerGames on Twitter as well and find that they do a great job interacting with their followers. They also keep fans updated on the cast members, events, and promotions. Its all about The Hunger Games!!!

I actually herd about the hunger games through social media - which I'm pretty sure was liongate's intent.  It is pretty amazing that they were able to create so much just by using social media. I would see at least five posts a day about it.   Friends and family were always talking about the movie and the book.... I have never read nor seen the movie. I'm kinda interested in what all the hype is about.

From what I’ve heard, Hunger Games is an amazing movie.  I’m sure word-of-mouth is helping this movie’s success but so is the social media campaign they initiated to get buzz for the opening weekend.  Having your audience do the marketing, through social media, for you is a brilliant, efficient and money saving way to advertise.  I’ll have to think of this when I do my project for this class and the other class I’m doing a media plan in.  This movies success during its opening weekend is a great example of the power of social media to promote ideas and products.  I’m excited to see if the movie lives up to the hype, I believe it will.

It is just amzaing to see how Liongate has reached the most successful opening weekend by using social media marketing strategy.

By reading the article, I found out about Thismoment and I was surprised to see that there are companies like Thismoment

that provides a software to manage social media and blog contents.

Social media are definitely creating more job field and opportunity and making social media marketers easier to manage interacting with their consumers

online.

I have not been able to watch the Hunger Games yet, but I do plan on it soon. Everyone who I've talked to that has seen it has told me great things. I think it's a great idea to use social media as a way of communicating and promoting a movie - or anything for that matter which is something to remember for my final project. It was smart to target a younger audience as well because they constantly are using different forms of social media daily in their lives. Also, getting people to interact for example by posting movies was a brilliant idea. That's a great way to make excitement grow and to educate others about the movie. Clearly, the success in the opening weekend of the Hunger Games proves social media is a powerful way to advertise and promote a product.

What a genius way of marketing - getting your fans to do the marketing for you! Although I believe this is only appropiate for certain situations and certain channels. An infomerical for example, aren't extremely successful with scripted writing. The Hunger Games was so successful because these shared social media posts were not scripted, they were geninue and real. I think in my final project if I can search twitter for keywords related to my company and focus the start of a campaign on those tweets, it could lead to a very successful campaign.

Being an movie buff, I had heard about "The Hunger Games" movie for a while. A lot of my friends had read the book, but I never really got into it. I had a movie pass and decided to go to the movie with some friends the other day. I definitely enjoyed the movie, and probably won't read the book. I did some research and it hit the box office by storm, grossing more than any movie every (that's not a series). After seeing all the marketing and social media advertising thismoment did I wasn't surprised it was such a hit. They did an awesome job, and work with tons of Fortune 500 companies.

I have not seen the movie yet, and I probably won’t until it come out on DVD. While I experienced all the hype for this movie, I have been meaning to read the books for years and still haven’t because of school. Because of that reason I will probably borrow the books from a friend the day I graduate and then watch the movie. I think that it is crazy that the entire buzz surrounding this movie was created by a startup. It really says something about who the players are in the digital realm. You don’t need prestige and a long list of clients to knap the business of even a HUGE motion picture.

Unfortunately, I have not seen the movie yet, nor have I read the books. I was late to hear of the phenomenon knows as "Hunger Games" and never got around to diving into the books. With that being said, after hearing all the rave reviews from my friends I definitely think I owe it to myself to at the very least see the movie, if not read the triology as well.

I found the article about the success of Hunger Games on Forces.com very insightful. I knew the film and the series was successful, but I had no idea just how successful. The oepning weekening box office successof the movie is overwhemlmingly impressive, I can't belive there is a film rivaling Twilight! However, besides just facts and figures the articles offers a lot of valuable insight. A specific piece of information I found information as well as possibly useful for my final project was focus on user generated content. This refers to content that is actually produced and gathered by users and which fuels more advertising. For the Hunger Games, "fans are encouraged to submit videos about how much they love the movie.  Fans then forward the videos to friends and the excitement grows" This is a social media technique that works not just in this case, but I would say in almost any other.Fans love being able to share their opinions and have other fans leaves feedback. It makes them truly feel a part of the growth and excitement. For the advertsing campaign I am proposing for my final project for Starbucks, this could potentially be a very useful aspect of social media to suggest use of.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I just finished the book last night and it definitely lived up to the hype! Now I just have to find someone who hasn't actually seen the movie yet, which will be hard given than my friends were one of millions that went to the theaters opening night and weekend to see it. I think the book's popularity contributed a lot to the movie's sucess, and the fact that is is more action-packed compared to something like Twilight, it was written off as a joke and appealed to a larger audience.

That being said, I think social media definitely played a role in hyping the movie up. With a social media strategy rolling out in Summer 2011, there was hype around it already and that's when many people I know started to read the book. Besides that, the company didn't even have to do a lot of promotion on social media themselves, everyone else was already talking about it. We all know how powerful WOM is and how quickly it spreads through social media. I know some people, including myself, are still talking about it on social media, and I don't see that slowing down any time soon.

I have not seen the movie yet, but all the hype around the books and movie has gotten me interested in reading the book series, and then watching the movie. I first heard about the hunger games when my friends in high school had to read it for a class. However, it wasn't until before the release of the movie that I really understood what the hunger games were about. The social media online campaign was powerful in generating my interest toward the story. The campaign was creative and allowed its users to make personalized wallpapers, district ID's and other movie related printables.

At first I thought that The Hunger Games was not an action movie because my girlfriend was dragging me to see it. After I saw it I thought that it was pretty good. After opening weekend everyone is talking about it or reading the books. I think that the original books written by Suzanne Collins deserves most of the attention of The Hunger Games but I think that social media has also been another big part. I have seen people posting on Facebook, tweeting about it and sharing videos on YouTube. There are several articles on any newspapers websites describing the movie and telling people that they need to go and see it or read the books. There is also a website where people can log themselves into the capitols system and see what level they would be in the games. This is another way for people to interact using the web. Overall The Hunger Games has done a fantastic job promoting the books but mostly the film using social media.

I just saw the movie last night, and I thought it lived up to all the hype that it is receiving!!!! I think that the success of the movie can be attributed to not only the amazingly well written novels by Suzanne Collins, but also to the enormous social media attention that it is receiving. As we all know, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are more popular than ever. I remember my first exposure to the Hunger Games series came from Facebook. At the time, I had not even heard about the books but when I started to see online ads, and then started to see my friends talk about it on Facebook, I immediately wanted to join the madness as well. After reading the article, I think it was very smart of Lionsgate to start a social media campaign for the movie, well before it was released. By doing this, they had time to target the appropriate audience, and allow them to read the book and get familiar with the story before the movie came out. I think this is a perfect example of how powerful social media is in today’s society.

I have actually not had time to see the movie yet, but as much media attention it has received; I would like to view the movie soon.  I think the social media for this movie was great.  It made $155 million for the weekend opening.  Social media made this movie a social phenomena overnight.  YouTube, Facebook, and social media were all used to promote the movie.  They started their social program in the summer of 2011.  Lionsgate and thismoment launched a series of social promotions on social media websites to inform people about the Hunger Games.  These promotions included colorful, video content about the characters and stories of the Hunger Games.  It was also broadcasted on sites such as MTV and MTV’s Facebook page.  This allowed children to become interested in the movie.  All of these promotions on social media sites really paid off during opening weekend when the movie hit record high numbers.

The marketing campaign for The Hunger Games was brilliant, and can be proved by its sold out theaters and $155M weekend. I am not surprised at all by this intense popularity surrounding the series. As someone who read the series and became instantly fixated, I understand the power this social media campaign had. I took part in the YouTube videos, the Facebook pages, and even helped spread the word by sending around information to friends. One thing that worries me about using social media so religiously for marketing is that it may build fan expectations to high. This was not the case, however, for The Hunger Games. With incredible reviews from Rolling Stone Magazine and Paste Magazine, the social media marketing helped enforce the movie’s presence in every ones day-to-day lives, even if they weren’t fans of the series. You couldn’t log onto YouTube without seeing an ad or even walk through the mall without there being some sort of Hunger Game theme in store windows. The social media marketing for this film made it a staple in society, almost like the Harry Potter series, whether you are a fan or not.

It's amazing what time and a little talent can do on the internet. It's hard to fathom that a huge part of this movie's success was social media. I'd hadn't thought of a movie or studio promoting itself through the web like that but it makes perfect sense. I love how social media creates a community. All these people came together, shared their stores, were interactive online, and then all went to the opening. That's just amazing, and it shows how much of an effect social media is starting to have.

Student

I have not seen the movie yet. I have also heard somewhat mixed reviews from different people and different sources online. Although the reviews are different, the numbers don't lie. It is hard to argue with a weekend that grossed over $155 Million in the opeing weekend alone. The Hunger Games is setting itself up to be the largest movie franchise ever if it keeps on pace with these numbers. It is intersting to think about how large of a part social media played in this role. Social media outlets such as YouTube and Facebook played a huge role in introducing the story of The Hunger Games to the world. It is very interesting to know that this was planned, and not a fluke. The fact that the company thismoment launched a startup for The Hunger Games using social media outlets is very interesting, especially since it ws obviously very succesful. It was also interesting how they used the concpet of user-generated content in their startup for The Hunger Games
