Consider sharing it with your friends.

So what is all this fuss about with Pokemon Go? Is it a fad, or is it here to stay? All I know is people are walking all over Ann Arbor playing this game.

I do feel it's a breakthrough in technology and the VR experience. Who needs goggles when you can find Pokemon easily through your phone.

How do you feel about Pokemon Go? What does it's immediate success say for the digital marketing space we operate in? What can we learn from it?

I couldn't find anything on HBO's budgeting so instead settled for past budgeting of similar companies (notably Netflix). Instead of looking at companies that parallel the one we’re studying, would it be helpful to look at companies that aren’t so directly similar?

What is the rule of thumb on how much a large business should spend on digital marketing? When do you see digital marketing becoming the majority of a company's marketing and advertising budget or do you think it will vary?

Student

I think we should all think about one of the golden rules, when talking about Pokemon Go.... Everything is good in moderation. Although I think its a fun and entertaining game I have heard a couple negative nws storeis about it. I believe someone walked off a cliff! I think the game is great as long as you dont get consumed by it!

While I was babysitting a my four year old neighbor and he asked me if he could play Pokemon Go on my phone. I was a little shocked that he even knew what it was but I guess he's been exposed to it a ton recently. It has been all over the news and I'm sure he's heard about it from his older siblings as well. Not really a question or anything, just wanted to share with you how even young kids have caught on to the craze.

Student

What do you believe is the most important metric or measurable in determining the success of a campaign or brand strategy?

Student

What is more important: innovation or execution in terms of a digital strategy? It seems like most everything has been done in one way or another but usually all the best components are not aggregated in one source. For example, many of us use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. on a daily basis because they all serve different purposes. Is there space for new innovations that replace the old or is our technology base too developed for disruption?

Student

I'm thinking that which one is more important when we are planning for digital strategy, building a positive image of brand or promoting the product?

Student

When it comes to creating a successful digital strategy, do you think it is important to start of small and work on one specific project? Or start large from the start and create a bunch of diffrent types of strategies that could be put to use at once? For example, with my brand Apple, they don't use social media. So my digital stragety is to try and incoporate that into their marketing. As of right now I am just starting off with Instagram then would eventually progress to other social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Is that the best way to go about it, or do you think I should work on incorporating them all together?

Pokemon Go: a game that has both traditional Pokemon fans and Pokemon noobies enthralled alike. Through out my experience with PokeGo (yes I am one of THOSE people) it seems that it isn't so successful as a Pokemon game but wildly successful as a VR game. There are numerious posts that support my claim but to sum it up in laymans terms: very little of the traditional Pokemon franchise is in this game (so far, updates say this will adjust and change) however it is great fun to try this new version of capturing and evolving the digital monsters.

I think the largest thing this game says about the market is that people are willing to wait out the flaws of a long awaited product. Typically if an app launches that has the type of server failtures that has plagued Pokemon Go's release viewers would back away, not thinking to look back or check in later to see if anything has adjusted. The free market dictates that they could probably find 4 more apps doing pretty much the same thing that isn't failing left and right. However, despite its irritating status Pokemon Go has been connecting people in communities that it wouldn't otherwise. Is the success of the app because of the face to face interaction between players that is unique to this game? Is it because being outside and getting excersize is proven to increase happiness in people and players are just "happier" playing Pokemon Go? Or is it because the same generation who was playing the traditional games with their Game Boy Colors have been waiting for this for forever?

Student

I think that pokemon go is such a success becuse it is one of the first games to incorporate an actual exploring method. Today while out shopping I noticed countless people outside playing pokemon go. The concept is simple but it allows users to play together, i hope to see more games of this nature. I have been seeing negative press on this game from a few accounts of negative stories but with any fad in the media the few negative stories are likely to gain the most attention.

I know that Pokemon was huge for our genetration. When we were younger thtat was the thing to do. Playing Pokemon on either a nintendo or a gameboy. Now its pretty much the same thing just stepping up their game in technology. In my opinion I think that there are postives and negatives about this new game. The positives are that it is bring all of us 20+ year olds back to our childhood. We are getting to re-experiece something that we all loved when we were younger. It also is getting people out of the house, getting them active instead of sitting on their butts playing video games. People are out walking all over just to catch a pikacho, getting excereise without doing it intenetionally. The negatives about this is that that dangers that it could cause. People are doing it while they are driving, there have been fights over it, etc. Even thought its all fun in games it could cause harm if people are smart about when and where thye play it.

Student

I personally think that Pokemon Go is one of the best things I've seen in a while. There has always been a controversey over kids sitting around playing video games and this game creates a bridge for that gap. Not only is it fun and entertaining but, in order to successfully play it, you have to physically go outside and move around. Its killing two birds with one stone! Im an active player!

Student

In my opinion I don't think Pokemon Go is a good invention. This game probably made a huge amount of money and benefited certain people, but there is a down side to it too. I just think it's horrible how many people are addicted to it now running after imaginary things; kids getting hit by cars and I even heard people are getting robbed because of all the gathering. My question is I wonder what the pros are regarding this game to the digital market? and shouldn't it be controlled more (have limitations) so kids can play it safely?

Student

I caved and downloaded Pokemon Go just to see what the craze was all about and personally I think Pokemon Go will have its time in the spotlight but will eventually lose its craze, as many breakthrough apps do. However, the timeline of its popularity will be longer than other popular apps though. This app has been a topic of contrevorsy because of its users not continually being aware of their surroundings and accidentally putting themselves in harms way (i.e., not looking both ways and walking out into the street with cars coming). There will surely be more and more apps featuring this type of technology in the future because of the praise of this app getting people outside and active with their communities.

Student

In my opinion, Pokemon Go is definitely here to stay. So many people took to it so quickly, and now the original Pokemon generation can carry this part of their youth into adulthood. It gets a lot of people, old and young, outside and that's increasing oppurtunities for goodness in other areas; Humane societies are encouraging Pokemon Go participants to come walk dogs while they play. It's also a mobile activity that is a social, as opposed to sitting on the phone along people can do it together and engage one another. On the other hand, I've seen multiple news stories about people walking into traffic and getting hit by a car while trying to catch Pokemon. So overall, like anything else, there is an upside and a cautious side, but as long as people play responsibly I think the game is bound for longevity.

Personally, bugs really make me less likely to use an app and more likely to delete it. From reviews I've seen too, people are fairly harsh with their ratings when there are glitches or bugs. Do you think this belief is universal, or can a well-designed app like PokemonGo for example, be forgiven more easily and continue to gain popularity?

Student

As a non user of the app it is hard to tell if it is a fad or not. I think like many apps it will eventually fade out within time. Though at the moment the app is a sucess with the number of users going through the roof. Pokemon when it originally came out wasnt such a big commodity like the app is right now. There were the followers of it but that was really where it ended. It seems like everyone is interested in the app and thats what makes this scenario different than the original desire to catching pokemon.

Student

What apps over the recent years have been such a success and lasted to stay the same? It seems like almost everything comes to an end at some point in time. What makes an app stay successful over an extensive time?

Student

I believe that pokemon go is abreak through in teconolgy that will remain popular unlike other fad games have. Like anything else I am sure that the hype will fade, but I believe the concept is strong enough to remain a popular game. I am sure due to their major success in the near future there will be a variety of games offering similar experiences as Pokemon Go.

Student

I believe Pokemon Go is a fad. As its server breaks down regularly, there are still many things to improve for this game. Besides, after people get to the level they want and collect the most of Pokemon, this app will be no differece with those pedometer app. So here is the question comes, what should Nintendo do to last this craze of Pokemon Go?

Student

I believe Pokémon Go is certainly is a revolutionary concept for the digital world. Rather than remain stationary, the game encourages users to explore their physical surroundings. This concept has caused Nintendo’s stock prices to rise exponentially by billions of dollars. As far as marketing, companies like McDonald’s are already in discussion and execution of agreements to make certain McDonald’s locations training gyms with rare Pokémon. Also, many businesses are taking advantage of the Pokémon available at their large facilities like Ford Field, Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago by enticing visitors to explore their institutions while capturing Pokémon. Businesses are enticing visitors using their physical space for outsider mobile apps rather than the services and products they offer. In doing so, it promotes the app and the business simultaneously. We can learn from the app and its effect on pop culture by becoming familiar with the app if not only for its recreational use but for its marketing use. Fans are already suggesting there be a similar app for the Harry Potter series where you learn and practice new spells at various physical locations like in Pokémon Go. Since the app is so successful and added billions in value to stock prices, more and more companies are going to capitalize on the opportunities it provides rather than view it as a fad. What are some other app ideas that could use similar technology used in Pokémon Go?

Student

I think PokémonGo definitely could be a fad but I think it will last much longer than the average fad.  I think, for the most part, people are really enjoying this app and view it as something that brings people together in a time where there is so much tension in our country and around the world. Many users have expressed these thoughts through Facebook posts, tweets, and posts on Instagram.  It seems you can’t scroll through these sites today without reading something about the game and the impact it has had on their communities.  I have personally seen the impact this game has had in places like in Traverse City, East Lansing and even in Chicago, IL.  The game has had a similar impact on my community as well.

In recent years (with the help of Dow Chemical), Midland has done a lot to develop its downtown area with new restaurants, bars, shops and even a minor-league baseball stadium to provide its residents with fun things to do.  Don’t get me wrong, the improvement has definitely given Midland residents more options, but there still wasn’t a whole lot for kids and young adults to do.  This game has given more kids a reason to go downtown, explore their community, and just get outside.  But the game hasn’t just gotten children to go outside, it has given people from all ages to get active and interested in the game too.  That’s part of the brilliance of this game.  Pokémon itself has an incredible reach just because of how large of a demographic it reaches.  People well into their 20s and even 30s are playing the game too.

The immediate success of the game allows us to see how mobile media could be the new, new media and that more companies may be looking to switch their focus to this type of media to reach their target demographic.  The release of this kind of game can also teach us a lot about what future trends in apps might look like.  An app that is sort of like a knockoff version of the game has been released in Canada and is number one in the Canadian app store.  The success of this kind of game could lead to the development of more apps like this in the future that can reach a broader group of people.  Maybe one that is more appealing to people who might see the Pokémon thing as more of a nerdy/childish activity.

Overall, I think PokémonGo has had a very positive impact on those who have decided to play it.  There are definiely people who don’t quite understand the point of the game and view it as a waste of time but not everyone is going to enjoy the same things so that kind of reaction is to be expected.  There have also been some safety concerns with the games but those could be easily fixed if people just used common sense to know that driving while looking for Pokémon (no matter how rare it is) is a danger to not only yourself, but to others as well or if people thought “hmm, this is kind of a bad neighborhood, maybe finding (insert Pokémon name) isn’t worth putting myself in danger.”  All in all though, this game has opened up a new frontier for the digital world and has set the tone for what is to come in the future and I think many companies could benefit from exploring this new medium.

As for the Pokemon Go craze, I believe it will be a fad that stays. There is no denying the meteoric rise of the most popular game ever downloaded, but like most games they eventually lose steam. Personally, I don't play it but my roommate does and has gone as far as Detroit just to catch Pokemon. I think we need to understand the importance of timing and capitalizing in the right time frame. If Pokemon had not existed another game might be #1, but the reality is they would not have had the same success as Pokemon Go which was positioned to dominate.

Student

Does this movement toward technology and increased stimuli change the way advertisers see the future of their business?? In your opinion, what does the landscape of digital advertising look?

Student

I do think that Pokemon Go is a fad in the sense that people will probably be on to another app/game in a year or so. However, I do believe that Pokemon has created a breakthrough new experience in regards to how video games are played. Instead of playing a video game console in a house, Pokemon Go may have just ushered in a new era of VR entertaiment by taking the game out of a set location, and into the actual world. As far as a digital marketing space perspective, it will be very important for all types of companies to embrace this VR technology so that companies can gain access to users of these applications.

Pokemon Go is a brand new app on the App Store that allows people to catch Pokemon right from their phone. I downloaded the game a couple days after it came out and I have to say I am quite addicted to it. I believe this app will be popular for a couple months and then people will get bored of it but I could be wrong. Pokemon Go is a lot of fun to play with friends and it gets people to go walk around instead of sitting inside all day. There has been an increase in growth of followers on Pokemon Go's social media accounts. Also on the app people will begin to pay in order to be a PokeStop. What was nice about this app is that it was free to download and no banner ads are incorporated into it. This app did it right in the world of mobile marketing. Will this app be able to keep people interested in the game and make them want to keep playing?

Student

I feel Pokemon Go isn't a fad because Pokemon has been around since the 90s and there obviously is still a huge following for it. I am interested to see how many people are still using the app in a few months after the 'newness' wears off and especially during the winter when the weather is not as great for being outside. In terms of digital marketing, I think the app will begin to utilize advertising to generate more revenue, with businesses paying to be PokeStops and gyms to draw in customers. I've already noticed businesses using the app to advertise on social media saying they're a PokeStop, have rare Pokemon, etc. What other ways do you think businesses will use the app to advertise?
