Social Media or Social News?

How people are exposed to news is dependent on a handful of different variables. Some have ingrained habits that are difficult to disrupt, watching the nightly news or picking up the morning paper for example. Some have adopted new media sources like websites, push notifications on mobile apps or podcasts. Others don't go out of their way to seek out news at all.
What interests me is the final group, partially because I often fall into this category. I have enough on my plate that if something is important, I trust I'll hear about it. Typically important news becomes apparent through my social networks. I come across articles, reactions and commentary from those around me which keeps me aware of what's going on.
How do you stay aware of what's going on in the world? Are you proactive about it? Do you share news to your networks? Or are you reactive like me, waiting for important news to become apparent through repeat mentions in your social networks?
Comments & Feedback
Although I would like to be more proactive when it comes to keeping up with news and current events, I don't find myself to be one of those people. I of course occasionally watch the news when I hear something big happened. I am also very active on social media, therefore I hear about a lot of local/national/international news through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. I thinnk older generations grew up reading the news and listening to it on the radio or television. But, the younger generations today are a bit different. For example, my Dad is extremely into keeping up with news and whats going on in the world so he reads the paper every morning. But, my 24 year old brother keeps up with news by downloading ABC and CNN apps on his phone. Personally, I wish I was more active when it comes to keeping up with current events, but I am in college and have a busy schedule. Therefore, if I hear about something I will look up articles and read about it, but generally I am more of a reactive person in this aspect.
I let the news come to me. I have breaking news alerts pop up on my phone from a handful of different apps. I feel that if anything is important someone or something will let me know in a timely fashion. After hearing about breaking news I may then search into it more whether that means looking it up online or just watching a news station on tv. I am really not that proactive at all and do not share news that often unless it is pertaining to a certain group or individual I know.
I stay aware of what's going on in the world by following several news organizations. The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is get myself a cup of coffee, and read the news on my CNN app. I move onto the local news after that for a more general sense of what's going on in my immediate environment. I am extremely proactive about it, I can honestly say it's one of the first things I do when I get up each day. I personally only have snapchat, instagram and facebook as my social media, and I rarely post political things on them or anything pertaining to newsworthy events. Honestly, on social media, events are rarely stated as facts and mostly as opinions, which personally annoys me and I find uninteresting.
I would say that I am definitely similar to you in the fact that I do not have a lot of time to read or watch the new because I work two jobs and I am a full time student. I definitely miss some things and hope that someone will tell me because I am not always aware of everything that is going on. Once I found out something on the news that is of interest to me I will research that, but I do not listen to current news. I think the most news I hear about is the trending subjects on Facebook, and hope for the best that it is important news that is beneficial to me. I sometime share news on social media, but not very often.
I hate to admit it but i very rarley go out my way to seek news at all on traditional news platforms sych as the paper, television, etc. For the last five years, the vast majority of my news information has come from social media outlets. I'd hear about something or see an article about an event on facebook or twitter and take it into my own hand to reasearch more information about using social media platforms. For example, many news outlets, like fox and nbc, have youtube channels were they post short videos about current events and those videos often ended up posted to facebook and twitter on a variety of pages for a variety of reasons. I also have grown very accustom to checking the cnn snapchat update every morning which I think does a great job at covering world news in a brief and consice way. if i find a particular article or video intersting i'll snapchat it to my friends or share it my facebook page along with my thoughts on the subject. I don't believe that reading the paper every or checking in on the five o'clock news is neccessary to remain informed in this day and age. If something happens anywhere in the world you can know about almost instantly at th touch of a finger.
I notoriously hate the news. It has always made me extremely anxious and always made me sad. I never liked becoming too aware of things going on around me. I relied heavily on the people around me to supply me with necessary things to know. Now, its the people at work talking about whats going on where I get most of my information from.
I will say, if I do want to find something out I do go to social media sites to get that information. Its funny, my boyfriend and I were riding our bikes through Times Square when the bomb went off in NYC a week or so ago and we immediatley went to Twitter to figure out what happened. Its immediate- it was a trending topic and it had only been 10 min old.
I guess a reasonable fear can come of that though. Is the news we read about on social media sites too biased? Is it too emotional- too much perspective snd personal perfernce on the matter/
I definitely get most of my news from either social media or my peers and don't really go out of my way to attain the news. However, I guess it depends on what the type of news is. If it's for general news in society most of that is from social media or peers. Usually I'll see something on Twitter or hear something from one of my friends. Recently, I have been using the Twitter "moments" section for news as well. That just gives top trending stories in the world so I guess that's me going out of my way for that news. But most of it comes from friends telling me news or me scrolling across something on my feed. I'm really into music and do go out of my way to get news about that. I have a few news websites that I go to for that quit frequently. So it does depend on the genre of news, but for a majority of news I let it come to me.
I receive the majority of news via social media. It is the convenience that attracts me and I find that important social issues and breaking news catch steam relatively quick on Twitter and Facebook. However, I typically don’t share news articles or opinions to my timeline. News outlets can be biased so I try to keep an open mind when watching and like to dig deeper by doing my own research. This way, I can compare sources and get the facts, ultimately eliminating the bias.
I think I get most of my news from social media, which I would not say is a credible source, but very convenient. Most of the news I see on social media iss very biased towards one side and in order to get a full view of what is happening in the world today a person would have to look at a few different media sources. I am one to wait for news to reach me but with the distruption of peace throughout the world I am trying to make myself seek out the changes happening. At my age and my standing in society as an individual able to vote and make a difference, it would be best to know all the options and opinions offered. As media changes, will the crediblity of news from social media change as well?
I definitely fall into the last category. My roommate is really proactive on world news and breaking news, so I have been super lucky to get all of my information from her. I have really tried to stay up to date by downloading news apps and getting push notifications, but I soon deleted them to get more storage on my phone for pictures/videos, music, etc. So it really isn't a priority for me to stay up to date when I will eventually hear about it anyway if it is that big of news.
I would like to say that I've always been on top of the latest news, but that would be a lie. I used to wait until something was relevant enough to be a topic of discussion in school. It wasn't until recently that I found myself subscribing to multiple news sources through their apps on my phone. From the New York Times to the Daily Skimm, I have tried to optimize my exposure to all types of news as well as various ways to read the news. I'm not big on sharing what I read through social media, however, I enjoy talking about it with others who are aware of the topic at hand. It's always exciting when a topic is brought up and I find myself already educated on it. Before bed and when I wake up in the morning are both convenient times to scroll through these apps and familiarize myself with news from around the world. Subscribing to the NYTimes has also helped me stay current with the election this year, which I have found extremely useful especially since I will be voting.
I have the great honor of working a very boring job. With this being said, I decieded to make matters into my own hands and make it more interesting. Therfeore I discovered the love of podcasts. At first I listened to humorous ones, but then found work to be a good time for me to become more knowledgable about the world. I have found myself to be better educated on topics that a lot of people don't know about and to be able to engage in conversations regarding these topics. A few of my favorite podcasts that I get this news from is This American Life, FiveThirtyEight Elections, and Embedded. Embedded is my favorite because it takes old big news headlines, but goes very deep into them and gets more information regarding the fact.
The only time i share news on social media is on facebook. However, if I'm going to make a statement I make sure that I've reasearched and have all the facts straight. I think people are quick to share because it easily falls within their argument, but don't even realize that all the facts or incorrect. Social media has had positive impacts on news (injustice for blacks) and negative (having more hatred due to not agreeing with what's going on).
For me I always reading the news on mobile app. I’m not proactive about it when it comes to staying aware of the news in the world. So I need to say we can’t live without social media. In China, we have an app call WeChat. People can share news to their friends, also they will post important news on public accounts. I’m not share news to network. Sometimes I will heard some news from my friends. Otherwise I will check on Facebook or Instagram.
For a majority of my college career, I seldom went out of my way to stay updated on current events and what was happening in the news on any given day. It seemed tough to find the time to sit down and read about some of the struggles that this world faces. As it turns out, I'm not alone (obviously). There are quite a few publications and apps made for people who don't want to spend too much time finding the most relevant or important news pieces. I was introduced to the Skimm halfway through my junior year - the Skimm is an e-mail subscription that shows up in your inbox every morning. In just a few short paragraphs, world news is summarized and presented to me in a language that doesn't bore me, with enough background so that I don't feel lost. Programs like the Skimm make it much more enjoyable and much less exhausting to stay updated on what is happening in the world around us. So in a sense, I am proactive in staying up to date, but with apps like Twitter and programs like Skimm, it's pretty effortless to stay somewhat in the loop. I am curious as to whether or not anybody knows of other programs/apps like the Skimm?
I would say I fall along the line of being more proactive about reading up on the news. I sometimes fall short of doing so and do find things out through social networks but I personally do not rely on that as my source and never will read more into it on social media. From there, I will research the news myself and go to reliable organizations that I trust and know provide me with the most accurate information because a lot of stuff that is broadcasted on social networks can be fake and unreliable information. I believe it is always good to do further research on something to gather more facts on the incident.
I am moderately proactive when it comes to the news and current events. I look at Yahoo! News and ABC News on a daily basis, however, I very rarely watch the local news on television. I find myself learning more information about the local news through my social networks. I think that I receive the most information from Twitter, as I follow most of the major news networks. As far as sharing news, I do not post on my personal social platforms at all regarding the news or current events.
As far as my question, I would like to know whether or not the induction of social media has increased or decreased the amount of current event knowledge among the public. I would assume that social media has increased current event knowledge and made it easier for people to find information regarding the news. However, it is also possible that social media has consumed people and made them less interested in learning about what is going on in the world.
Honestly, I have to say I can not live without social media. As an international student comes from China, I usually using wechat and communicatie with my friends because of different time zones. ALso some shock international news you will get to know when social media platforms published. I always try and active myself with what's going on the world. I this when I am older maybe I will not pay much attentation on the social media although I am fans of sharing with my networks. I keep beliving news are the knowledge so sharing news and write some comments about news are my favorite pat of social work.
I find out about most important things going on in the world via a variety of social media platforms. There have been instances where I have missed world news for several days and only realize it because I log onto social media. I have not ever shared news that I have discovered on any of my social media platform, I suppose I assume other people have already seen it. I want to be more proactive in finding information about current events but have conflicting views on how news is presented. I feel like bad things have been happening in the world for a long time and the media has just made it more apparent. The world isn't any worse there has always been violence and crime, we are just aware of it now because as mentioned, more people can find out more things in more ways.
I am not very proactive at all when it comes to staying aware of the news in the world. I usually don't seek it out at all either. I will watch the news if it is on but never think to turn on the TV just to watch news. I end up usually reading about current events through social media like facebook or sometimes twitter. I read it if I see a lot of people has shared it or many are talking about it. I should be more proactive about looking at news but I just don't think about it until I see something interesting.
Nowaday, I believes most of people have their own social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Wechat in China. I usually collect the news from social media and also heard from my friends. Sometimes I will go check the news but which is not frenquently. I will share the news If there is something I think it's important for my friends to know. Here is my question: How can we distinguish the truth or false when the events or news shown in front of us?
Unfortunately, I am not very proactive about staying aware of what's going on in the world and I rarely ever share news to my networks. I'm very reactive and wait for news to become apparent through social networks because I am more likely going to be on social media rather than on a news website. I do however follow some news channels on Facebook and enjoy reading the articles that they share but will probably not end up sharing anything on my own social media networks.
In nowaday, more and more people use social media to receive news and stay aware what is going on in this world. I download few apps like twitters, facebook, also some news apps to receives news on my daily life; therefore, all those apps will push notifications on my phone so that I can select which news I want to know more information. When I see big new happened in this world, such as terrorist attack, I will share it on my post to let every friends in my social media to know what my thought and what is going on in this world. I am not proactive about news, but I will likely to see big news in my social media. Do you think social media is a way to let people stay aware of big news after ten years since the online technology is imporving everyone? Do you think social media might mislead some people because of different comments on news?
Today, I think most adults assume that when Generation Z is on their phone, they're just texting or doing something pointless (which could be partly true), but as a young adult, I'm beginning to read more news articles on my phone, from the access of mobile apps, and advertisements. I do share news articles across networks that I find relevant on my Facebook page. I am not usually reactive, but I also don't share everything I hear from the news and give an opinion about it. Mostly just interesting reads.
As ashamed as this makes me, I find out about a lot of the world news through social media. When something becomes a trending topic on twitter or the top hashtag in the world, I become informed. However, I do not usally actively seek out the current events or news.
When I do learn of something, however, I do my best to facilitate that information to my friends who would not know otherwise. Because many of my friends are like me and do not search up current events too often, those who are not active on social media seem to be the last to figure things out. There was a time in my life where I would read the news every day, but it turned into things like "This celebrity is cheating on their significant other!" or "Kim K broke the internet!" I guess that's how social media is too, so there isn't really anything I can complain about.
Although the social media platforms all will post the same news at the same time, they still have difference. Different angles, differnent photos, and different understandings, they all will help me to understand the situation. I am not stay away from the world, I think I am acutally overexposure to the news. I do not share news to the newworks. I am the one who waiting for important news.
I am a reactive person when something important things going on. If some news mentioned by many friends on social media, I would like to search the key words on twitter or Facebook to figure out what’s happened. And for avoiding some interesting or important affairs over the world, I got many news apps and allow them push the notification each day. Compared to watch nightly news, audience could choose some topics based on interests.
My habits tend to fall under the same category as you when it comes to keeping up with the news. I usually learn the news from different social media outlets, but mainly Facebook and Twitter. Once I am aware of big news I often will share a post in regards to it. When I have free time I like to scroll through the moments tab on Twitter, which is really informative on what is going on in the world today.
Most of the time I am reactive when it comes to important news. I do not go looking for things day to day. There is an alert on my phone that comes from CNN when somthing very major happends. I also used to stay updated on the latest tech that comes out through Cnet. If it is somthing atht I really like I do end up sharing it on social media.
I am fairly reactive when it comes to news/current events. I recieve most of my news from facebook and twitter. These two apps are filled with breaking news and current information. When i see something that interests me, then I will do extensive research (google searches) to find out more about that topic. I sometimes also go onto websites like CNN to see what's is going on in the world. I am usually fairly busy, so if it's not breaking news/all over social media chances are I'm oblivious to it. I hope to one day be more proactive about watching the news.
I would say I'm more proactive about gaining knowledge about current events. I subscribe to a daily news website called "the skimm." It's like a dumb downed version of all the major current events that are happening. I then like to provoke dicussion in my roomates or groupchats on my phone. I like to hear what they know and what their opinon of the news is. I think staying informed is really important, especially in this day in age.
I think it is all dependent on how much you use social media. I'd say I am personally more reactive to news only because I do not go on Twitter and Facebook as much as other social media platforms. These platforms are becoming more news based, but Instagram is not used in the same way. I am primarily on Instagram compared to Facebook or Twitter, so I do not see as much news related things on here. I do enjoy how fast news gets relayed on the latter platforms mentioned. If I hear from a friend something crazy that just happened in the news, I will go to Facebook or Twitter to see everyone's reactions and get more information about the event. It is much more convenient then waiting on the newspaper the next day.
I stay aware of what's going on in the world by watching the news, as well as keep up with the "popular" or recent pages on social media such as Twitter accounts for CNN and ESPN. I am not always up to date with these pages/apps because I tend to browse through these earlier in the morning when I wake up or have some spare time to see what is new. I would consider myself to be more reactive, seeing as I do tend to wait for important news to become apparent. Are there any other popular apps or site suggestions for ways to be updated with the current events?
I used to be very reactive to news and would wait for important news to become apparent through social media. However, ever since taking ADV 481 I have started seeking out the news. In this class you have to read the WSJ for every class period. It became a forced habit that led me to check out their app "What's News" on my own and not for the class. This is a great way to combine being proactive with reactive. The app sends you a notification each day with the top trending news stories of the day. They are very short descriptions of the article that is just enough to inform you without being lengthy and time consuming. Its proactive because I check these news stories everyday, but also reactive because I have to be reminded by the notification on the app.
I have never been one to turn on the news or sit and read the newspaper in order to gather information. Now that social media is taking over everything, I find that I hear more about what's going on in the world through social media. Whether it's Snapchat, FB, or Instagram I find things out through these apps on my phone. Once I find out news/information, I never decide to to share it on any social media accounts. If anything, I just simply text the people I know instead of sharing with the world. I am for certain a reactive person. I wait for the news to be brought to my attention with multiple posts online. Does social media spreading news/current events have any negative impacts?
I stay aware of what’s going on in the world through watching the news every morning, but I also use Facebook and Twitter as a way to see live news if something breaking happens. I’m not incredibly proactive about checking the news constantly because I’m generally very busy throughout my day, but I set aside time if I know there's something important going on in the world. I don’t ever share news on my social media, mostly because I barely post on them.
I tend to keep up on thee latest news through social media. I like to look at the trending topics. I also hear about it through podcasts that I listen to regularly and from friends. I am very into fashion news so I look to offical fashion news blogs to stay up to date as well as my fashion podcasts.
My question is do you think social media will eventually become its own news source and eliminate our traditional online news outlets?
I stay aware of daily news. However, I like to see news through the internet and social media so I do not get important messages right away since I do not have cable TV in my dormitory. If I see the story which I felt unfairness or danger, I share the story thorugh Facebook messages or other netwokrs. I am more like reactive because I do not fully believe news until all the people show agreements on it. So, I check news but not sharing until the story is really true.
I stay aware through multiple media sources so that I am usually aware of breaking news. I am both Proactive and Reactive. When I am at home an have access to cable TV, I watch the BBC news with my family. At school I do not have cable so I rely on Social Media to be able to find out about what is going on around me. When I am using Social Media I do not share news to any of my networks.
I really like to search new about our world. Before I come to university, I always awared our world through my family's chatting and TV. However, when I came to university, I am rarely to watch TV, so I spent lots of time online. Thus, wensites play a very important role in my daily life and a way to let me know our world. I think I am mix of proactive and reactive of it. Because sometime I am willing to visit some news webisite, because I always use some social medias, they always some news to me directly. I share new to my networks sometime when I feel very interesting or sad, and most of times I share my emmotions togther.
I'm more of a reactive person when it comes to being aware of whats going on in the world. As social media has tremendous amount of informations going in and out on daily basis, major informations and happennings can easily be accessed through various social media platforms. When i get on the facebook i constantly see same informations being shared and posted repeatedly in just few hours frame. For that matter, anyone who spends time on such media platforms can easily be updated with news information in his or her daily practice rountine. My question is should people be proactive or reactive about subscribing to daily news paper ?
I'm a mix of proactive and reactive. I follow a couple of local and world news stations on my Twitter account and if they happen to post something I might click on it to read more. Some days I will even select the lightening bolt icon on Twitter and read over what is trending worldwide. In a lot of ways, however, I am reactive. I won't read a post unless it interests me, or I won't look deeper into an issue unless it is a popular topic. If a news story really interests me or I feel passionate about it I will often share it to at least Facebook. I find Facebook to be the best for sharing links and stories as opposed to Twitter.
I try and stay active and aware with what is going on in the world. I like to be in the know with what is going on. It is always a good conversation starter and with the way technology is changing it is important to always stay up to date. I like to check my news apps when I get up in the morning, whether its celebrity news or gossip or something that is going on in the world. I usually like to share whats going on with my friends on social media. I don't do it all the time, but I will share an article about something that is going on every once in a while. There are some things in the news that I wait for others to post about or share so that I can catch up with the situation.
I am more reactive when it comes to finding out about the news. I often will hear about important events from my parents or older siblings over text or during phone calls. I just don't have much time in the mornings before class to watch the news and after work I just want to make dinner and start my homework which again leaves me with no time to seek out the news. People these days post a lot of stories on Facebook that have happened in the news and that is a place I find new news stories sometimes. I think as I get older it will be important for me to stay up on the news more and make sure I know what is going on around the world because that is what makes an educated person.
I think it's imprtant to be aware of the news and what is going on around us. I have news apps that I either look at or recieve notifications and when the headline catches my attention, I usually dig deeper into the story. However, I find that a lot of the time even though I have these apps, I hear about news first on social media because of the time I spend on it, although I don't typically share news with my networks. So I'd classify myself in between proactive and reactive because sometimes I seek out the news and sometimes I just hear about it through social networks. How do news media outlets like newspapers, tv, and radio compete with new media? Do they still have any sort of competetive advantage? Is the following for those outlets still enough to get by at this point or do they have to transition their outlets into their own new media platforms in order to survive?
The way that I stay aware of what's going on in the world is by following news channel's pages on Facebook or when people mention about a specific news whether if it's word-of-mouth or through their Facebook timeline. I would consider myself reactive like you. The only reason I would search about a specific news would only be because it is in my area or it has something to do with what I'm learning about in class. I would say that my cosuins is proactive and would also keep me updated on news. I usually talk to her everyday and would always hear all different types of news. That is also one of the ways that I stay aware of what's going on in the world.
This is a constant struggle of mine as well. It is difficult in the current fast paced world we live in today to try and "watch the news.' After all our generation is very spoiled, everything we want to do is usually at the tips of our fingers in seconds. The news is sometimes hard to follow, as a journalism major even I sometimes find it hard to keeep up with current happenings in the world. I do sometimes depnd to heavily on social media telling me exactly what is going on. This is not a good habit considering that a lot of what is shared on social media may be something from a paritcular bias persepctive and not from a neutral reporting source. This becomes even more problematic as more people have access to blogs and can begin sharing their personal opinions online and calling themselves reporters. The world of news has changed but one things is certain there will ALWAYS in my opinion be a need for traditional journalism. But how do you keep up with it? For me personally I do this by checking the news app on my phone everyday. It allows me to get settled into the world around me without having to neccessarily having to watch tv. I can get the news at the tip of my fingers, I just have to know the right places.
I used to be very proactive, but am now reactive as time has gone on. News sources have disappeared on my phone and have been replaced with social media apps. I use Facebook to interact with friends and family, and I use Twitter to interact with sports sources. Today I learned of the passing of Miami Marlins pitcher, Jose Fernandez, because I went on Twitter, then confirmed it on espn.com, then relayed it on Facebook.
A question I have as an advertising student is what source do you propose we keep an eye on in order to stay up to date on important industry news?
I am a person who has push notifications set on my phone so I can keep up to date with what is going on in the world. I don't go out of my way to find out the news of the day by watching a whole segment of the news but I do like to see the breaking stories that are occurring in the areas of life that I find interesting. In order to be a more well-rounded person, it's imperative that you are aware of what is happening in the world. Aren't we obligated to be informed human beings in the pertinent news of society?
I am defiantly a reactive person when it comes to what’s going on in the world. I rely on social networks to bring me the news, especially since I am always checking my phone, and looking on different apps constantly multiple times a day, so I would say I do rely on my phone to give me information on the world. I’ve realized if its important enough then I will see it all over Facebook, Instagram and Twitter naturally. I don’t even really watch the news anymore, just because I don’t have much time, even though I actually like the news, as depressing as it is with the sad content they share. But social media does a good job of doing massive posts on important information about the world, such as sharing content involving the upcoming election, talking and posting about Hilary Clinton, and Donald Trump. Also about professional sport players, new diseases, discoveries, actors, and so much more. I used to think its sad that everyone sits on their phone, but I’ve come to the realization that its just the life we live in. We rely on our phones for everything , so why not just take advantage of the apps that provide great information on new things. But I do believe people need to find a balance between their phone and the real world. Sometimes its good to put the phone down and actually do things, discover things, physically, and spend time with family without all the devices around. My question is, do you think people who are more reactive feel like things are only important if its all over social media? Or if everyone's not talking about it is it really important?
I am definitely reactive when it comes to news. I'm pretty active on social media so I know that if something happens in the news that I will hear about it that way. I used to receive notifications on my iPhone for important news stories but after a while I ditched the notifications because very few of the stories concerned or interested me. I feel the news has always been quite cluttered and if there is an event that happens that's a big deal, I will most likely hear about it from social media.
