As a 22 year old, I’ve had the opportunity to witness some
extraordinary changes in the world. It seems like just yesterday I
was sitting in front of my first hulking gateway thinking 1GB was a
lot of space and MS Encarta was the best way to do a book report. But
times have changed rapidly, today we deal with 30GB handhelds and
sites like Google measure their search result times in 100th of
seconds. So what does this mean? It means that things have changed
and changed very quickly.

Like any business student, I thought I knew all there was about. I
mean heck, I have Facebook and I know how to Google, what more is
there than that? It turns out a lot. I am taking this fascinating
course at MSU called New Media Drivers License, which teaches you
about the extensive range of new online media as well as Search Engine
Optimization (SEO). Within a month of the class my name has gone
from nearly non-"Googlable" to the top of the page.

What does that mean for you? Well, a company is a lot like a person
on the web. Like any most anybody on the web (in most cases), you
would want anybody looking for your company to be able to easily find
you. The industry translation for this is referred to as your
companies Search Engine Optimization (SEO.) SEO's are essentially
improving the traffic driven to your site as a result of the position
your site appears following a query on a search engine (i.e. Google or
Yahoo.) So how does one improve the presence on these search engines?
There are many ways to answer this question and some of them involve
technical web developer work involving coding and HTML that is sure to
go over about 90% of the populations head. To make it easy and
staying within most people’s capabilities, improving your companies
SEO comes down to relativity. An up and coming skill in the
copywriting world is based on SEO. When creating the content on your
site it is important to have capable copywriters who can create
"keywords" that make your site relevant and compelling to users. This
essentially means that the copywriter must always consider that their
content must satisfy the user’s desired "search".

Let’s say you are a used car dealership owner in Cleveland that sells
used Cadillac CTS among other things. If a person were to Google
"used CTS in Cleveland" would your site provide the content to allow
Google to find you? The more relevant your search results are the
more you gain optimization.

Another major factor that plays into SEOs is certain sites reputation
with search engines. For example, search almost anyone on Linkedin
and you will generally find their Linkedin profile among the top 3
listings. This is because of the relationship and reliability that
Google finds with sites such as Linkedin. This is why it is important
for your company to be omnipresent.

The online world is always changing and you want to make sure that you
are there with it.
