Blogging is Like Sushi
Reading is involved in the ordering process of sushi and is also necessary for blogging, but that's not what I'm talking about. After reading countless blogging tips and scanning several 'how-to' websites, I've come to the conclusion that starting a blog and keeping it 'fresh' is similar to trying sushi for the first time and keeping the love for the delicasy alive. Jeff Korhan writes an interesting article on his site called 5 Tips to Keep Your Blog Fresh and SEO 2.0 included a post titled 101 Ways to Make Your Blog More Popular and Successful. To compare blogging to the art of loving sushi I'm going to reference and combine tips from these blog post as well as other blogging 'how-to's' I've found along the way.
1. Use a Great/Likable Platform
As a new blogger it's important to choose a great blogging platform, or one that you already know you like to use (such as Wordpress or Tumblr) to start your blogging adventure. A great platform makes creating and understanding a blog much easier. In the same way, when you try sushi for the first time you need to choose a 'platform' that you enjoy or is easy to like. Most people have already tried shrimp or crab and these ingredients aren't raw so starting out with these as platforms for your first taste of sushi is a good idea.
2. Frequency Sets Expectations
Few bloggers are consistent especially the noobs because they have not yet gotten the hang of blogging or have yet to create a schedule to stick to. When your frequency increases people begin to set expectations for you and your blog. This is a great challenge for bloggers to meet and exceed. Frequency keeps your blog fresh. As you begin to try sushi more regularly you begin to develop expectations for each sushi experience you come across. Keeping up the frequency of sushi dining is important for acquiring the taste and becoming accostomed to the texture. Frequency keeps your love and desire for sushi fresh and then increases the types of sushi you are comfortable trying.
3. Practice Makes Perfect
As you begin to blog more and mess around with new widgets on your page and different plugins to add to your dashboard your blog will evolve. All the tools that the blogging world has to offer start to become natural. The perfection of your blogging will come slowly but surely, with practice. I believe sushi is an art and with practice your tastes will evolve and mature. Also, everything else surrounding your sushi experience will get better with practice. Using chopsticks will become natural, using wasabi will be a necessity, and you'll understand the reason for all the ginger on the side is to cleanse your palate between different types of sushi.
