Working for Michigan State’s University Activities Board is one of the best opportunities I’ve had since becoming a Spartan. However, creating late night and weekend events for the student body can be daunting, but not as challenging as reaching them. Our target market is all around us, but marketing to one of the nation’s largest campuses is no easy task.
Surveys have found that we are best received by those that read our table tents, located in all cafeterias and food concourses on campus. Second to the widely known table tents, is word-of-mouth. MSU’s 25 undergraduate residence halls provide a home away from home to more than 15,000 students each year. But what about those that live off of campus, a near 35,000 students? How do we reach them? Social networking has proven to a helpful tactic. UABatMSU creates facebook events and includes updated information on the week’s activities. Now, if only we could increase the amount of people that went to our page…
After reading Chapter 3 of the New Media Driver’s License Resource Guide, I found the article, 5 Ways to Instantly Boost Your Facebook Page Traffic to provide a few simple but useful tips. Writer, Jackie Cohen tells us “some sure fire ways to grow our fan base.” Her tips included creating participation with tools like photos, polls and direct messages to name a few.
Each of the ideas put forth by Cohen are easy that it’s understandable why some might overlook them. In her second point, she advises companies to reach out to their fans directly. While I would normally be afraid of driving away my audience with “spam”, her explanation made me realize that by connecting with them every once can serve as a reminder. They’re fans for a reason.
While the article might not be a “cure-all”, I look forward to raising them at the next staff meeting to see what results they might produce with our marketing.
