Consider sharing it with your friends.

Instagram is one of the most popular social networks around today – but for advertisers, it's always presented sort of a problem. So far, Instagram ads have been very limited. Only a few select companies could use them. And, the ads that appeared were almost solely designed to gin up awareness around a brand or product – but not to allow direct clicks/sales.

All that is about to change. This week, Instagram announced a new clickable ad product for advertisers, along with a new "multi-photo carousel" ad that will allow users to swipe through a series of images that tell a story about a product or brand – and then take a user to a web page where they can buy the product/etc.

Do you like the way these ads look? Think of a few ways a brand could leverage this ad product, and share your ideas in the comments below!

what do you think of the unfavorable ads on social medias?

I have seen sponsored ads on Ins already, and I absolutely hated it

Student

This is really interesting because when I use the Instagram,

some of the advertisements were too short.

I thought interesting advertisements should be more longer and deeper.

Student

I almost check Ins every hour but it's my first time knowing these ads. I  like the way they look like and it's a good thing to see these ads. It's a good way for new social online marketing based on Ins is becoming so popular.  It will be succeed if they do reach more tarkets.

Student

I use Instagram on a daily basis and I have seen these ads before. I appreciate that Instagram only chooses a selected few to advertise on people's news feeds becuase we are not bothered with too mant ads. Since I am not used to seeing ads on my timeline, they usually catch my eye. I also really like these ads look like. The fact that each ad has multiple pictures in one posts makes it very interactive. I also think it is cleaver that it tells a story and that at the end the add a link to the direct website. Overall, I think that these ads are efficient and will be very successful.

Student

I use instagram sevaral times a day and I do like how these ads look. I actually saw one of these ads for the first time today. I think since instagram is so popular and used by millions, it is a great way for companies to reach there target markets.

Student

I am not really that big into instagram but I know a lot of people who love the scroll through all the time. Being able to click on an Ad will be the ultimate game changer. It will allow brands to reach a whole new target. Just scrolling through and seeing an ad may catch the attention of someone but they just keep scrolling. This will allow to bring customers stright to the call to action page. I really do like this ad and how it looks. It is very eye-catching and interactive.

Student

I do like the way these ads look. I use instagram everyday and its probably the social media app I use the most. What I've always liked about instagram is that you're not bombarded with ads in your feed nor are they on the side of it. The only ads you can see are from the companies you choose to follow. So I think this is a great step. I follow many fashion accounts so I think this ad can really benefit retailers when they send out picutres of their products such as Victorias Secret swim suits or Michael Kors watches. Also I know for fundraising this ad could really benefit everyone. My Dad has been battling cancer and when his benefit shirts came out, this would have been a really cool way to sell them instead of having to rely on facebook.

Student

I am on Instagram a lot; it is probably my most used social media site, with twitter being a close second.  Thinking strictly as a Instagram user I think that this is an awesome way to advertise.  This idea of a clickable ad makes advertising much less annoying than many other sites.  This way, if I am interesting in the ad, I can learn more about it very easily, without it taking me to a whole other browser.  As a user, I appreciate that instagram is advertising, without shoving the media down our throat like some other sites do.  Overall I think this is a great plan, and im excited to see it in action!

Student

I am an avid user of Instagram and due to the nature of its creativity I think the clickable ads are a smart idea to better market to new generations. Other companies use paid ads such as Twitter and Facebook so why should Instagram lose out on the money that can be made by doing the same thing? The online B2B interactions are becoming essential so that businesses can better reach their target audiences and mutually beneficial endeavors can be fruitful. These types of click through ads are what younger generations of consumers are finding to be most impactful, so I applaud Instagram for stepping up and implementing this concept.

Student

I think because instagram is a picture based social media, by this way advertising on instragram requires more creative and catches people's eyes. Picture is way that really direct, you only have about 1 second to get people's attenetion. On instagram is not a place for direct selling by for getting people's attention, because people will not spend time to looking for the speific product after one picture promotion, or if they really like it. This is why not every company fit to this platform to promote.

Student

I think that implementing these new type of advertisements is a great innovation and concept… however I believe that this will allow for more trolling and more of our social media platforms to be plagued with pop-up ads.

Student

I think Instagram was smart to install this new advertising. I personally really like it. I think it's very user friendly and easy to naviagte. It allows the user to scroll through more photos with the option to click on the websie so I feel like this kind of advertising is good becuase it's not pushy. This type of advertising is very strategic and the ads are probably filtered depending on the persons interest and who they're following. I think this is a good step for brands and it'll also get more people to use Instagram!

Student

I acutally do like the way that the ads look. If we are going to have to see photos that we didn't ask for, I would rather be given the option to see more if I want.

I think that a brand could come up with a creative way to use the carousel that would give less of a photo album vibe and more of an interactive experience. The moist benefiicial thing that can happen for brands is to be able to advertise to specific target markets. Unlike how McDonalds gets to advertise once in a while on instagram to everyone. I don't want to see that. Nor do most people. If there are going to be ads, they should be tailored. Brands should post photos like those that their target market are already subscribing too. With content that is relevant specfically to them and links to a specific site/ cause for users to interact with.

Student

As an advertising major I understand that this is my future bread and butter. Yet, I cannot help but wish that our forums of communication remain untainted by our consumerist world. Some things should remain pure and in the digital age, this is becoming more and more difficult. While social media is connecting the world and aiding it in keeping abreast of news from all corners of the world, it is also the reason behind deteriorating personal communications. To add advertising in the mix leads to a generation that is in the habit of buying things they might not need or even want but because they can, they will. To play the devil's advocate, being from that generation, when I see something online that I like but I can't find a website to buy it from, it's extremely aggravating. As a generation that is already used to instant gratification and free two day shipping through Amazon Prime, this platform of advertising through Instagram is ingenious.

Student

I absolutely love that instagram does this.  I think that it is great and useful, because Instagram is an application that you scroll through and there is no really other application on the app.  When they just add an advertisement while you scroll, it allows you to just look at the image and decide if you want to click on it or not.  I think that it should be used more.  It is a super helpful option.  When I scroll through Instagram, I would love to see these because they are usually interesting and applicable.  It is important for these apps to continue to be interesting, because people use Instagram for entertainment/

Student

I believe that this advertising method will lead both Instagram and advertisers into more benefit. When this feature will come out, many advertisers would love to post their advertisements on Instagram and therefore, Instagram will make a lot of fortune than before they use a new clickable ad product for advertisers. Advertiser will also easily present their advertisement to user by just scrolling.

Student

I have always been curious about Instagram's lack of support for clickable links or ads in general. However, Instagram is one of the few social media platforms I don't particularly mind seeing ads on - especially if advertisers are showing something cool/interesting to look at. It will be interesting to see who and how these new advertisements work going forward.

Student

I am a fan of this advertisement feature, because it gives the viewer a choice of how involved they are or how much they are exposed to the ad. I usually exit out of the Twitter app on my phone when a bunch of featured ads come up on my timeline. The more natural making an Instagram advertisement can be, the better.

Student

Though I do like the way these ads work, and the scroll factor does help the brand make the most of advertising on Instagram by allowing for more content to be displayed.  I think the best way a brand could leverage the product is to really tell a story, from a human-interest perspective, through pictures.  Additionally, they can try using their product in different artistic ways that don't necessarily show off the fuction of the product, but simply show it.  People aren't looking to Instagram for ads just yet, and may be against it for a while.  By showing a story or some truly artistic pictures, they keep the integrity of the platform in tact and keep people interested in looking at the ad instead of simply scrolling by.

Student

I believe it is a great function to add on Instagram. Advertising is a thing that people do not want to see especially when they are not intereted in. People can skip the ads if they don't like it or swipe through a series of images. It gives people a choice either flip through the content, or keep scrolling down to see other pictures. It will be less annoying for people who are not interested, because no one likes to see an advertising which they are not interested.

Student

I do personally think this is going to be a good idea for Instagram. Instagram is a place for pictures and small captions so doing the swipe pictures to tell a story is a great idea since that is what Instagram is all about. Finishing with the companies page with the link to their website will definitely help companies get more clicks to their page. I think it is a great business venture for Instagram to add some advertisements, which they will do in a very classy way.  Instagram has grown to be one of the biggest forms of social media and since theses ads are not annoying and will not block the users views to what they are originally doing, I believe they will be successful advertisements.

Student

I like this because we as consumers do not want to be bombarded with advertisements that we do not want. This gives us the opportunity to look over each ad and see what it is that we like and don't like. Its very similar to Inbound Marketing in a way, and I feel that we as a digital generation want to "shop" for our interests instead of having ads shoved down our throats. If an ad is not getting as much traffic, then that gives the advertisers a chance to look at their plan and see what it is they are doing wrong. That way, they can keep evolving and put out more creative ideas and draw a bigger market.

Student

I think the ads are displayed nicely on the app and that Instagram did a good job incorporating them into their newsfeed. A few brands that could leverage these ads are Starbucks and McDonald's because they both are international brands that already have a large prescence on social media.

Student

I think this a fantastic idea for Instagram to add to their features. Not everyone enjoys seeing ads when they aren't expecting them, but this is done in a way that users can flip through the content if they are interested, or keep scrolling if they don't want to see it. I also think it is a good tool because it gets the user to interact with brand instead of simply absorbing the info. It creates a call to action in itself.  I think brands could leverage this ad product because they could feature their product in ways that their consumers use the product. Consumers could upload photos and they could be added to a "campaign" and it would help the consumer interact with the brand even more. I'm very fond of this idea and I think it will provide great success for Instagram in the near future.

Student

From an advertising standpoint I think this is a great new feature. I've already seen some interesting uses of this that have caught my attention. It will be a great way to reach new segments of consumers for many companies. Also, because it is such a visual medium it will be easy to make the ads appealing and drive more clicks. The option to have multiple pictures also offers the brand an opportunity to tell a story, which can help peak interest in the brand. I can see users being annoyed if they click and are taken out of the Instagram app, but time will tell if that's true. Personally, as a user I dislike them. I liked that Instagram was mostly ad free, and the ads that were present were not intrusive to my in-app experience. However, if Instagram is using the algorithms that Facebook uses (which I would assume since Facebook owns them now) and they are able to personalize the ads based on a users interest, then they might not both me as much. Irrelevant ads are not my favorite.

Student

Instagram has come out with some pretty cool updates – New filters, direct messaging, Flipgram and even video, but this I believe will top them all.  Not only will it benefit users Instagram and Instagram itself, it promotes other organizations and businesses alike.  The ability to post multiple photos in one is also a nice touch.  Like most, I’m not the biggest fan of advertisements or commercials while I’m scrolling through feed or trying to watch a video, but the ability they grant to simply scroll down and away from the Ad is great if you’re simply not interested.  Well done, Instagram.

Student

It's interesting how the ad itself is presented as a photograph that appears as a sponsored ad that an organization is promoting. I wouldn't think to click on it at first, unless the caption were to state to do so. Although, the overall presentation and structure of the ad seems easy to maneuver and looks appealing. It's definitely a smart tactic that Instagram will allow non-profits and businesses alike, to use to advertise to their target audiences. What I like most about it, is that it tells a "story" about the brand and/or product, which could provide incentives for a person (who would be happening to scroll through the ad) to contribute to a cause or purchase a product.

Brands should definitely use this social media outlet to promote and convince their target audiences to purchase their product(s). One way a brand like Apple, could use ads on Instagram to generate clicks/sales would be to feature short clips of how people interact with their products on a daily basis. The focus could be to show users and non-users alike, that having Apple products makes life enjoyable. Another suggestion would be to create a campaign that requires Instagram users to tag the Apple handle and tell their own story of how they use thier apple products on a daily basis. This would create engagement all across the board, and hopefully will convince Apple users and non-users to use their products.

Student

I really think that Instagram is going to benefit from ads on their app, because this social media platform has such a huge following. Companies can reach customers quicker and on an even more personal level. I also feel that integrating ads onto Instagram is going to be what advertising was in the 1960s. Kind of like the modern day Mad Men.

I recently started using Instagram and have been using it more and more. I think that the idea of ads that you can click on is a great idea. I think that the companies will leverage themselves forward with this idea. It is very interactive and helps promote the product well so I think it is a great idea. I think that the ads could easily be targeted to the users through their follwers.

Student

In my opinion, this is a really good idea for the advertisers since the instagram is so popular now. And yes, we can only see a few brand advertising on the instagram and that does not really meant anything or is not really catching people's attention. Therefore, the upgraded version will really help the brand started their ad on the instagram and also will make it more convenient for the costomer to directly view on the website. This change can be seen as a timing for the brand to ready for the expansion of their company.

Student

I think that this is a very good idea. I have always thought that instagram is one of the best social media platforms because the combination of being able to display high quality pictures with good captions tells the most compelling story. It is similar to the thing that makes a blog successfull; providing the audience with interesting content that isn't necessarily sales oriented. Instagram is great for this, and now companies can harness that in an even more efficient manner.

Student

As an active user of Instagram, I think this new feature will be very effective for brands. I think Instagram is a visually platform that allows users to interactive with images and videos. I like the way these ads look, and I think that brands will find success using this feature by having their products be more interactive and also adding a bit more excitement to their brands. Instagram allows for users to feel involved, this will be a way for consumers to connect even more with products.

Student

I think this is an awesome change for Instagram and businesses that want to advertise through it! Instagram has a huge following and since these ads don't seem as bothersome since you can click through them- I think the public will have a positive attitude about the new change. Since you can click through the pictures, the advertisments will be more engaging and people can exit as soon as they lose interest which I believe the public will favor over being forced to watch a video or something. A brand could leverage this ad by having different facets of their products with each photo people swipe through to maintain interest!

Student
With Instagram being widely used around the world, I believe these new ads will benefit not just the companies advertising with them but Instagram itself. It will allow for more users to interact with the app and create more traffic. Companies will be able to tell stories with pictures which are more impactful then just word stories. Individuals will most likely feel more accepted and invited into the company when the ads are telling a story through pictures. With the emotions of pictures, companies such as non-profits, volunteer centers and donation centers will most likely benefit from this because they will be able to connect to the audience and their emotions and at the end direct them to their dontation website where the individuals will be more likely to donate.
Student

I like the way theses ads look. As much as I hate ads on social media its about time instagram starts to get them. They are very professional looking and it is cool that they tell a story. Its cool that at then end the ocmpanies can put their web page where users can access them because before they did not allow direct click sales to their ads. Instagram is a social media site that i use most these days so its cool that you can now see ads in pictures rather then annoying links and words everywhere on your page. And they probably have to make their ads look cool since it is instagram.

Student

Instagram is very new to me and I mostly follow famous people.  I think adding clickable advertising to Instagram was very smart idea for companies.  As a user, advertising is never a fun thing.  This is put in a format that should not be bad for the user.  Being able to swipe between pictures and scrolling past it, this gives you the ability to invest your time in the advertisement if you feel the need.  One great upside of the advertisement on instagram is that you can scroll past or look into in.  On other social media websites you are either stuck watching it for 15 seconds or have a short few words.  This you can look into which is a plus for everyone.

Student

I personally have grown to use Instragram the most out of all the social media accounts I have. I think clickable ads are so smart for businesses to use because it allows people to see multiple photos instead of just one. I think that on a business standpoint using instagram for advertisements is the most beneficial because it has become widely popular. If you are not interested right away, you can stop clicking through pictures unlike youtube where you are forced to watch a 15 second video even if you are not interested from the start.

Student

I really like this innovative idea by Instagram. I agree that it was lacking as a valuable advertising medium because users only know to 'double tap' if they like the picture; there is no other action being made. I think the look of the ads fit in perfectly with the rest of the app. They stayed consistent with their visuals, which I think is important. I also like how they managed to embrace on the touch-phone/sliding feature. This is new to many apps, and particularly Instagram.

Brands could leverage this feature in many ways. Like the example shown in the video, advertisers for non-profit organizations can use this ad product to embrace the emotional aspect of their cause through pictures, and give the user the option to donate money. Advertisers for restaurants could use this feature with the help of the location services. When the user is near a specific restaurant, a sponsored ad would pop up in the user's newsfeed, in which they swipe right once and see a picture of select menu options, and then swipe right once more and it will provide you with the nearest location of the restaurant. They could also provide a page for a special discount that the user could use upon arrival. Advertisers for clothing stores could do something similar, only they could provide pictures of new arrivals. Clothing stores could also provide a button "SHOP NOW" which would take them to their online shopping website (landing page).

Ideas are endless with the creation of this new ad product. It opens many doors for advertisers and provides great convenience for users.

Student

Instagram is honestly my favorite social media website because of the use of pictures. I think having a clickable ad product for advertisers will be very useful for companies who are trying to gain awareness of their product or service. The multi-photo carousel is really a creative technique to allow people to explore the company and see it in different views. Furthermore, the potential customers who view the clickable ad can see different images but also be led to the website where they can purchase the service or product. This new Instagram feature would be great for nonprofits companies who have stories behind their names like some charities have. On other side, those companies that are trying to make a profit they should put some of the most eye catching images of what they are promoting. Visuals are one of the best ways to bring in customers and this feature will be very beneficial for companies.

Student

I think its pretty cool that instagram has developed clickable ads. I also think its cool because the companys can get really creative with their pictures they take and it will make more people really interested in the product if they do it right. The fact that the ad is a picture makes it a really unique way to advertise and I think if used the right way it can be really beneficial to some companys.

Student

I actually don't mind this idea! Normally ads on apps I use are extremely annoying,  but I like what Instagram is doing here. The ads seem subtle enough to pass over without the annoying "you have to x out of this popup for it to go away" like most in app ads do. I think if the ads are targeted behaviorly, there's a big chance I will actually look at them and take the time. I personally know that less intrusive in your face ads are more likely to get my time and attention. Anything that immediately pops up, I disreagard instantly.

Student

I think these are very unique advertisements and I like the multi-picture feature.  However, from a user standpoint, I am apprehensive on increasing ads in Instagram since it is the the social media platform with the fewest number of ads and is the least invasive.  Based on this, I think it is crucial that advertisers on Instagram make sure to not alienate users with advertisements that are very frequent or push the product too heavily.  I think these ads will be very popular targeting younger audiences, as they are the primary users of Instagram.

Student

Instagram is an app I use on a daily basis.  I believe this is a great way to reach more people and connect them to a brand. It is true that there are little to no advertisements on there. I think it will be interesting to see an interactive ad that users can scroll though.  By telling a story though their ads, companies will gain more users and followers through their ads. I believe this new ad forum will be more beneficial because it will be more of a visual for consumers to look at and enjoy.

Student

This is a great opportunity for advertisers, and I definitely like the way the ads look. A lot of beauty brands I follow already kind of advertize their products on Instagram, and now this will make things a lot easier. Another type of brand that could really leverage this new ad product would be clothing brands. They could use the hashtag #OOTD (outfit of the day) and have clickable links to each piece in the picture.

Student

I actually really like this idea. The reason I like this idea is because it is a subtle way to incorporate an advertisement for a user to come across while on social media. Most advertisements are pop-ups that don't let you click out until after watching a video ranging from 5-10 seconds. With this advertisement you can just simply scroll past it just like any other photo. These ads have a natural integration into user experience like inbound marketing. Another reason I like this idea is because it can possible relate to something you're interested in. I think it would be a smart idea to somehow synchronize the users' Instagram searches and the advertisements shown on that users feed. By placing ads relative to a user in front of them there is more likely to be interest in the product shown and a sale is more likely to occur making it a successful advertisement. For instance if one were interested in hiking and outdoors activity a good advertisement to display might be one for a company like Patagonia or The North Face. Overall I think it is a smart and subtle strategy that gets the point across but not in an overwhelming way.

Student

I'm a little hesitant with this new way of advertising through instagram. One of the reasons I really love the application is because it is the one social media source I can log in to and know I am not going to get swamped with advertisements. I'm confused though, will you only get these advertisements if you follow the company or do they go out to everyone in there selected target? I understand why Instagram is heading down this route, I just hope it doesn't become overdone and messy.

Student

Instagram is about pictures. Allowing advertisers to use pictures to tell a story is a great way to sell a product. Most brands create their own Instagram accounts to promote products and promotions. This means that the only people who are looking at these pictures are those who are already aware of the brand and are already following its account. The Instagrams new ad forum will allow brands to connect with new customers. I am intrigued to see how personalized these ads will be to the users.

Student

Surprisingly, I love this idea. It's a way to showcase a product in a beautiful way. You have to be creative on this format to get attention which will only push brands to showcase their work in a more enlightened way. I think this will really benefit those brands that focus on sending a bigger message like Dove, Nike, and Apple. I'm excited to see where it goes. Those companies can tell stories, the way they normally do in their videos, in a photo based way. It's going to keep their campaigns going strong in a new, inventive way.

Student

I believe that this is a good idea. I like that the idea of the "multi-photo carousel" using multiple images. I love instagram way more then any other social media site. Facebook especially I just feel is people bragging about their lives while instagram is (usually and hopefully) one photo that is unique. I like that idea that these ads will still hold true of what instagram is and that is photos, I am glad that they are not using videos for advertising. I personally think that companies are successful at leveraging their brand by using repetition. So posting a photo with a link to a web page daily or twice a day would be helpful.

Student

I think this is a great idea start putting ads on instagram. People love looking at pictures while using instagram and i think putting ads with pictures on them is a great idea. People are already focusing on pictures so the ad wouldnt be such a distraction rather then while reading a article or feed on twitter. From a Instagram users perspective, I think it would also be annoying to start seeing ads on instagram. Many people will get annoyed and start to dislike instagram if they are constantly looking at ads.
