The Future of Media

The way in which people consume media is changing. In many ways, it's becoming more democratic. Fifteen years ago the only way you could get in front of peoples screens was if a major broadcasting company deemed you worth. Today, anyone with a smart phone can record and upload content to YouTube. Many stars have been discovered based on YouTube videos alone (for better or worse, Justin Bieber.) This shift has occurred on both sides of the spectrum. Television is no longer the only way to consume entertaining content. Soon, it will no longer be the most popular way.
Our behavior is shifting. We're looking for on-demand content, both professional created and user generated. People now spend hours watching YouTube videos rather than hours in front of the TV. Some of the most popular shows are published by companies like Netflix and Amazon rather than large television networks.
How do you currently consume media? Do you still watch cable or network TV or is it mostly streaming? Do you publish your own content? If so, why?
Comments & Feedback
I do watch cable network TV; however, alot of my video streaming or movie watching is from online sources such as HBO GO and Netflix. A lot of my time consuming media is via the Internet. The only content I have every posted was on my old blog or social media such as Twitter or Instagram. Overall, I have noticed a severe decline on Cable TV popularity. Most of this pattern is probably from the versatility or easy access Hulu or Netflix. Outlets like those are be accessed anywhere and does not require a TV but instead any piece that can acess the internet can do it!
I am learning international advertising this semester, advertising can go global. however, ads in foreinger countries can not be "globalness"
How about social media? do you think social media can go "globalness" one day? I think it is possible, because the way people use social media is very similar with each other..... especially for the the new generation.
After attending Michigan State, the primary way I consume media is through my laptop with YouTube, Facebook, and Netflix. These platforms contain content that directly interests me. I can type in what I want to watch and it many options show up for that search. I don't watch cable TV because it is less convenient. You end up flipping through the channels trying something that interests you, while trying to avoid commercials. I don't post my own content on YouTube, but I do on Faecbook and other social media sites. One day, if I have information or entertainment worth sharing then I'll publish it on YouTube. There's enough content out there for now without me adding to it.
My media consumption at home is different than at State. Back home, I watch TV and DVR heavily. I watch the Today show and CBS evening news each week night with my parents. All of my favorite TV shows (except for Last Week Tonight and Married at First Sight) are on network TV and usually waiting for me on DVR, so I can watch them without commercials. Ironic, I know. While at MSU, all of my content is on-the-go friendly. I scroll through Flipboard (an RSS syndicator app) for all of my world news, tech updates and pop culture 'scandals' on the bus to classes. I watch Last Week Tonight on YouTube to timely catch John Oliver's newest main segment during lunch. However, I will make time every Thurday, in the fall, at 10pm to watch How To Get Away With Murder (ABC). In regards to my own content, I try to publish my own Twitter remarks and projects on YouTube, but want to create more. I am still playing around with the right ideas in my head of what I want to create, with the idea of vlogging sticking.
I am not one to create my own content, however, I am a large consumer of content across multiple platforms. I enjoy the digital era that I'm current in and find it liberating to be able to find information about anything I want to at any given point in time. When I was growing up smartphones were not a thing, I never used YouTube, and I had dial-up internet. Long story short, the technology was there, but it was slow and painful to use. I think that's why I take full advantage of it ( and use it more than I should).
I use a wide variety of social media sites for my news, Television shows and events for my entertainment, and the internet for those previous two things and everything else I want to do. It is a shame that people these days don't use the internet to their full advantage. It is a privilege that only a few people have outside of the United States and as adults it's our job to be informed about national and world issues.
Currently, I am consuming most of my media through streaming. Whether it is Youtube or Netflix, each month I seem to be watching less and less actual television. Not only is it easier to access, but I can watch whatever I want to. With TV, if your show isn't on there isn't much you can do but search around for something else. With the direct streaming that we have today, we can search for exactly what we want when we want and watch it right then. It is also really cool how you can get noticed for your talents today with social media compared to how it used to be 20 years ago as you stated. I only see this way of viewing media continuing to grow, sadly cable TV needs to do something big soon or it will be taken over.
I occasionally find myself watching TV, however for the most part I stream my content online. Most of the shows I like are available online, either through Netflix and Amazon or through the website of the station that produced them like Fox or ABC. These shows are available anytime I want, with little or no ads. I can pause, rewind, leave, and comeback anytime I want. It has become a much simpler way of watching all my content. There is also no issue of watching one episode and then having an episode from a later time in the showcome on right after. It all goes chronologically, one after another, allowing for marathons of binge watching.
Well when it comes to watching TV shows I actually follow I am a streamer. I personally think it's easier and there are no commercials that I have to deal with. However, I do find myself from time to time flipping through the channels on my TV but that's only when I'm at my actual home. I say that because my roommate and I only get 12 channels on the cable in our apartment because we figured we wouldn't need more than that. Everything is just so easy to stream these days, and very accessible too. Like you said, we're looking for on-demand content. That's why I would rather be a streamer.
I have to say I used to spend lots of time watching TV when I was young. However, I barely use TV now and my parents basically don't use TV either. It becomes normal that everyone doing their own thing with media. Time is changing too fast and people are trying too hard to accept new things. We can't say it's a good or bad thing but it does bring us lots of fun and regrets. Media nowadays is becoming very complex and diversify.
I consume media in multiple different ways. I use social media, watch TV, surf the Internet, and listen to radio everyday. I watch both cabel TV and stream videos online. Netflix makes it easy to binge watch TV shows, which is nice on a rainy day however Netflix does not keep up to date new episodes of every TV show on their application. In my opinon it is sometimes just easier watch TV shows on cable TV when new episodes of shows are being broadcasted. I do not do much publishing of my own content, I used to make my own Tweets and Facebook posts much more frequently but recently I've just been using these social media platforms to keep up with news and friends. I think I have slown down publishing my own content because I do not have nearly as much free time with work and school then I used too. I would like to start publishing my own content more frequently in the future, I just need to think of ways to make more time in my schedule for that.
I've always been really fascinated about the change in how people consume media. When I was a kid it was basically TV and that was it. But nowadays I barely ever actually use a TV. When I want to watch something I pull it up on NetFlix or Hulu on my computer, stream sporting events or watch things on YouTube. It's a weird example to use but there's an episode of South Park where they talk about how Living Rooms are dying. Families don't really sit down together and just watch TV anymore for the most part, everyone has their own thing and are doing their own thing with media.
when i was younger i used to spend alot of time watching music on tv. Mtv Jams all day and i wonder if they even have that chenel. alot of artist are trying to bring back music on mtv but i dougt that will happen. all this generation know now is youtube. any music video that comes out would be on youtube.
young generation back home are shifting from TV to Youtubes and such a platforms , Since TV is limited and sensored . young generation like to explore and have the right to chose what to watch and what to not not being monitored by the government !
another reason it is because it has less adds and sometimes no adds at all with a low price fee
to me I dont like watching TV nethier her or back home I prefer youtube !

I myself actually am not into media like most people my age today. I am a huge music person and would rather listen to music than watch tv. If I do watch anything I will watch Game of Thrones, Discovery, History or Travel channel. I also havent watched these channels in a while because I have been soo busy I dont care to let tv distract me. Also, if I watch movies I usually will have them on a usb anmd plug it into my tv or rarley stream. Lastly, as far as publishing my own content that doesnt happen, I usually just watch clips of other peoples things on Facebook or Instagram. So I guess I am pretty boring when it comes to media in general but I put my energy and focus into the things I have to get donw eather it being school, work, or socializing.
I consume media in multiple forms i like to stream media more due to my busy schedule so it is easier. I also like the steaming because it it is more personalized and services like netflix recomends similiar videos and movies that are to my likings. Simple things like this allow me to not waste time searching for a show or series that i might have no interest in.
I kind of miss the time when I spent so much time watching dramas and movies in front of the TV. I still watch cable TV but only for Sports and special events, like the Academy Awards of Oscar. Other then that, I watch network TV most of the time. It is more convenient that I can easily catch up shows or dramas when I have free time. I also spend hours watching YouTube videos. I enjoy watching those YouTuber's daily vlogs. I have my own YouTube Channel, but I have uploaded only few music covers and vlogs so far. I like video recording my daily life more than writing blogs. Also it is a way for me to keep those special moments in my life.
When it comes to watching television, I do not watch much live TV anymore. Since I have been in college it is hard for me to be able to watch live streaming shows on cable because of my changing schedule. I purchased a Netflix subscription and have used it very regularily (almost everyday) to watch movies and tv shows. I like that I can watch the shows on my own time, and there are no commercials! My subsscription is only $8 a month, so I believe the investment is very worth while. The only things I seem to watch on live TV anymore are sporting events, because I like to see the action happen in real time, versus read about it in the newspaper the next day. I think this is something that really is changing about our world. People are recording TV shows to watch them later, and do not end up watching many television programs live anymore. I think something like this can hurt the ad industry then, because when people record shows they tend to skip right through the commericlas, and when you pay for subscriptions online, you get to avoid the ads as well. This is where I then see social media being a HUGE asset to the advertising industry. People are always on their phones to stay up to date, so to be able to get to the consumer, you must be relevant on social media. All in all, I think cable TV could be slowly dying. When it comes to publishing my own content online such as videos on youtube, I have not done very much of that. I have used it for class projects to share with teachers and students, but that is about it. I have not streamed anything online that is something I am interested in, because to stay connected with the people I need to, I do not need to stream videos. I may re-post a video of something I found funny on my twitter or facebook, but I do not create my own videos and post them online.
Increasingly today I consume media in less traditional ways as described above, such as Netflix and Hulu streaming, as well as YouTube videos. These new ways of consuming media content are more quick, cost efficient and convenient than traditional methods such as cable or network tv. Although I have not published my own content just yet, modern day technology such as smart phones and platforms such as YouTube have made it so that producing media content is easier for all. If I do decide to create my own content one day, I would feel confident in the ease of producing and publishing today's fast-paced, technology based society.
I am oh so guilty of this new age of consuming media. I use many different social media outlets, as well as Netflix, HBO,, Showtime, and OnDemand. I am slowly moving away from watching normal T.V, in fact, I even got rid of cable last year because my roommate and I just mainly watch Netflix. I am known in my friend group as the show queen, when anyone needs a show suggestion, I send them my embarrassingly long list of shows watched and give my favorite suggestions. My favorite part of this new age of shows, is that there is no commercials! I know in this field that isn’t the best thing to say, but I cant help it!
Even we have many different kind of media around us today, but I think television is sometime that will not get away soon. Because I think television is like a thing for family, for friends. When I live in the dorm, it is a really tiny room for two people or even more, but many people still choose to have a television in the dorm. We can watch movies online or on our smartphone, but its alone. With laptop you can never enjoy the happyness with friends and family. For specific time you know what you want to watch, but for most of time you do not know. you just turn the television search with one interested you. That is something other media can never do. This is why I think television will not go away too fast.
For the most part, I say that most of the way I consume media is through TV. I'm a sucker for HGTV and will spend hours upon hours watching every house hunters marathon. I think for me it is more "mindless tv", whereas when I go for Netflix, I am there to watch a show and become invested in what is going on. So to me, Netflix is more of a commitment, whereas when I turn on the TV I'm just looking for something to pass the time. I think I enjoy both ways equally, and both have their benefits. I don't typically go to youtube to watch content, but I do on occasion.
I still watch Jeopardy! every night and The Daily Show, but most of my media consumption comes through Netflix or YouTube. I also frequent news sites and get my headlines from Twitter. In terms of my own content, I have a blog and also submit to sites like Thought Catalog. I am definitely not brave enough (yet) for YouTube, but definitely am interested and wish I could! Maybe one day :)
The only time I watch TV is for sports or if I'm at my parents house and they're watching something. I am one of those impatient people that cannot deal with commercials and that's why I prefer streaming. I have Apple TV that I use to stream shows on my TV or I just stream on my computer. Apple TV is the greatest thing ever invented and I recommend everyone to get it. It is rare to not find the show you are looking for online. Between NEtflix, Hulu, HBO Go and Youtube, cable TV isn't a necessity. I do not publish my own content.
Currently I consume media in different ways. I still watch cable and network TV but I also stream from my computer. I live with 11 other people so I share the TV in our living room with them. We'll watch TV together but I don't have one in my room so I'll watch Netflix or other forms of media on my computer before I go to bed. I used to watch a lot of Youtube videos when I was younger but not as often now and I never publish my own content.
Funny that you mention "people now spend hours watching YouTube videos [...] than TV" because I am part of this group. This is mainly the media I consume, and by means of any video ranging from Brodie Smith frisbee videos to the commonly searched "Funny cat videos." I would definitely call myself a streamer because I find a lot of amusement and entertainment sitting on my laptop rather than sitting in front of the TV. TV only ever really comes on when there is a big game on.
I consume most media through the internet. I do not watch cable or network tv on a regular basis anymore. Most college kids today rely on Netflix or Hulu Plus. Soon HBO GO will be available to those without cable contracts! Streaming is more practical for my lifestyle. I don't have much time to sit down and watch TV, so when I do, I prefer to watch more than one episode of my favorite show.
I consume media in various ways, most of them being on-the-go. I am extremely busy as a student, as well as working 35+ hours a week, which means I consume media pretty wisely and efficiently. I used to constantly scroll through various sites like Facebook and Twitter, keeping up with every new post, but not only does that no longer interest me, but I simply don't have time. When I do access these sites, I am almost always viewing news feeds or checking in on family or friends. If I need to look something up, I use my phone and google it. As far as watching cable, I can't remember the last time I watched TV at home. I do have a TV in my room... with an HDMI cord that streams perfectly to Netflix, HBO Go, or Amazon. I don't post any of my own content because I don't have time to record or upload everything that I do, and even if I could make time for it, I highly doubt it's anything anyone wants to see or anything that would make me famous. But hey, I guess anything is possible.
Like most of my generation, I'm constantly consuming media, whether that means I'm checking Twitter or Facebook or stuck in a YouTube binge or shamelessly watching hours of Netflix. These are all ways I feel connected to the rest of the world because they're mediums through which other people share content and/or content that others are also consuming and interacting with. I think we all feel a little disconnected when we don't check our networks in some way throughout the day.
Strangely enough, I still watch some network television, but it's mostly streaming nowadays. The only show I continue to watch live on TV is Supernatural, reasons being 1) I've watched this show live for almost seven years and obviously love it and 2) I watch it with a couple friends who are also die-hard fans so it's our designated hour during the week that we meet, watch, hang out, and catch up.
I do publish my own content, no huge projects or productions, but I like to create and share content that's relevant, beneficial, or funny in some way. My main medium for original content is Twitter though I do post some things to Facebook but it's usually sharing someone else's content. Since I'm a writer and tend to ramble more than others (hence these stupidly long posts every week), Twitter provides a strict set of characters to limit myself - I like the challenge. Also, Twitter is like a microblogging platform, I can write short snippets about my day for my followers without getting too involved in the production of the post like on an actual blog.
I still watch cable TV when I have free time. I typically turn to internet broadcasting when I want to learn how to do something, so I watch a YouTube video. However, I believe that once I relocate and start my career in the fall I will steer away from cable TV. I currently feel that cable TV is starting to show too many reality shows or shows with no substance. Therefore, in the near future, I will probably rely more on on-demand content, such as Netflix, so that I can watch the shows that I want when I want.
I no longer really watch network TV or cable. I'm required to have cable at my apartment and the only time I have turned on the box is to watch an away Spartan football game. I watch Netflix, probably too much. I watch mostly TV shows and Netflix original series'. I get the news through the networks, like ABC, CNN, CBS etc., through Twitter now instead of TV broadcasts, as well as Buzzfeed. I also spend a lot of time on YouTube for both news and for just general content that I find engaging. I do publish my own content on YouTube, Vimeo and on my Behance profile. I'm a film major, so I need to post what I create for classes, work or just for fun so that people, especially potential employers, can see what I do. I enjoy consuming information this way because I feel like I'm in more control over what I watch and when I watch it, and what information I consume.
I consume the media in a variety of ways. I use it through cable television and through the internet. I watch cable TV to keep caught up on some television series or just to have on as background noise when I'm doing homework. However, I mostly watch movies or old television series on Netflix because there's more topics to choose from. I have also streamed with Amazon Prime and HBO Go a few times with my friends who have it.
The only content I ever publish on the internet is pictures to Facebook. I publish pictures just to show my Facebook friends what I've been up to. Sometimes I'll share links from various sites to my friends on Facebook. In high school I used to publish videos on YouTube, but I haven't in a long time. I've stopped posting videos on YouTube because I've gotten busier with school and haven't felt the need to post anything of worth.
I currently consume media in many ways. I do still watch cable but I am also guilty of being a serious Netflix watcher and definitely watch on my computer more than an actual television. I also am a fan of going to ondemand and watching episodes that I have missed from the previous week and watching from that. Here at school I don't have DVR so I can't record, pause, or fast forward live television. Because I don't have these options is why I am more into streaming, the only downfall is when my computer or the website gets glitchy and freezes on me. In regards to publishing my own content, I don’t really do it. The only thing I have done is made a video and upload it to Facebook, but I haven’t done that in years and it was mainly for cheerleading.
I watch tons of TV series. When I say tons, I mean it. The only thing is that I never watch them on the actual television, I am always streaming it. When I am trying to watch a series, I don't want commercials to get in the way. With live streaming becoming so popular, I'm not surprised that mediums like HBO and Showtime are looking to have their own online streaming site. Who wouldn't want to watch all their favorite TV shows while laying in bed?
I don’t have cable at my house in East Lansing and it has ever only been a problem when I wanted to watch a sports game, but when that problem arises I can easily go to a friends house or to almost any restaurant and watch it there. We do have cable at my house in my hometown, but even when I’m home I rarely use that because I’m so used to streaming my shows. I have a Roku connected to my TV and I absolutely love it. I’m able to watch Netflix, Hulu Plus, Showtime, and more through it so I really have no need for cable. I also stream videos and music through my phone and laptop daily. One reason I think I prefer streaming over watching cable TV is because I have way more options at my fingertips. With watching live TV, I have to find a show that’s on that I like and make sure I start it right on time otherwise I will have possibly missed out on important info that’s relevant to the rest of the episode or series.
I still watch some cable TV, but Netflix and HuluPlus are honestly more convienent. I'm a grad student working more than 40 hours a week...I usually don't have time to sit and watch when my shows are airing. I love having the ability to watch episodes and movies wherever and whenever I have time. I also have the Amazon Fire Stick, so that's fantastic as well.
I really don't publish my own content. I've never felt the need to. I do have friends that do, though. One friend has an improv channel on YouTube and publishes improv performances. I like seeing content published by people I know. I just don't have the time to motivation to do it myself.
I consume media thru any channel that is available to me. I still watch cable and network TV and believe it or not wait a week to watch another episode of my favorite shows. Although most of my nights are consumed by endless hours of watching Netflix on my computer, dont ask me how many times I have debated downloading the Netflix app on my phone. Since March Madness has started I have kept up with all the games by checking in on the app and watching them live over my Iphone. I personally do not download any of my own content but I am definately guilty of getting carried away on YouTube and watching videos from the latest late night talk show to dogs doing tricks.
I think people enjoy being able to change from either laptops to phones to TV's for certain shows and programs, or just for a refreshing change of environment.
I consume media almost entirely in line with this new digital behavior. I stream my music, I stream my TV, and I even buy most of my books digitally through Amazon. Even if a show is aired on cable, I will rarely watch it at it's broadcasted time. It's more convenient for me to record it or find it online and watch it later. I've even started to realize that when I do end up watching some cable television I get really annoyed with the amount and length of the commercials. (Yes, even as an advertising major.) It breaks up my show and is frustrating when I'm trying to relax and enjoy some TV time.
I am also engaged with people on the internet. I follow my personal friends and family on multiple social media networks, as well as celebrities and people involved in my industry. I am interested in the things that these people are posting and sharing with the world. I also publish my own content to be viewed. I have a personal blog as well as a blog dedicated to books. I feel like this is another way for me to show my personality. My blog is like my virtual wardrobe or style. It's who I am digitally.
Even over the past two years, the way I consume media has changed. When I was given an Apple Tv for graduadtion, Netflix quickly became the most frequent way I watched shows. Even when I plan to watch a show on cable, I usually end up DVR'ing it and watching it at my own convenience or waiting a few minutes after the show begins so I can fast-forward through the commercials.
I believe the reason many people are turning to streaming and on-demand telelvision is the convenience factor. We live in an instant-access world now, and the accessibility of these shows allows people to watch things on their own agenda without having to pay any attention to the tv scheduling.
I have never been a big "TV show watcher," so I consume most of my media through the internet, especially Netflix. I enjoy Netflix because I can watch it on my time, as well as watch many eposides in a row. Although I would rather watch shows on Netflix, I still do turn to the TV for major sports games, the news, and weekly shows with my roommates here and there.
I still watch cable TV, but not as much as I use to. Over the years I have become a fan of watching Netflix and Youtube videos. Instead of watching a series on TV I will look on Netflix to see if they have it. I love the series that Netflix publish such as "Orange is the New Black". I don't publish my own content on Youtube, but I subscribe to a lot of channels.
This is awesome to know where the future of media is going and what that means for the young professionals aspiring to work in the media business after college!
I used to watch show or drama on TV when I was young, but after I have my own youtube channel and I begin to subsribe my favourite show on Youtube, I gave up wathcing TV because I found out waching on Youtube is far more easy and interesting. I can not only follow my favourte show, but also share my own video with the public. I think I have lots of fun.
Actually, I don't watch TV in my house seems I prefer to watch some program on Youtube. I used to spend hours and hours wathing my favourite shows on Youtube. I think Youtube is far for easy and comfortable for me. If I want to watch my favourite show on TV, I have to wait certain time of the week to wait for that which I think it is stupid and not necessary because I don't have that time! I sometimes will publish my own content on my youtube channel just for fun.
I basically do not watch cable anymore, and I hardly watch anything besides Netflix and Youtube. I do not post my own content all the time, but when I write or create short films, it's amazing how fast you can get a film up on the internet for people to see. They may even notice you. I find it almost laughable that most of the Youtube stars out there are more entertaining and fun to watch than most films and tv shows out now, so that is where I usually go for entertainment.
It's crazy noticing how things have been changing, even noticing how my parents ways have changed throughout the years as well. If I want information about anything I go to the internet from my phone or computer. I don't watch much television. If anything I watch the food network maybe 5 times a month, but when I want to watch something it's usually online because I couldn't watch it live or when it was programed on TV. The only content I post is picture on my instagram, but other than that I don't publish anything. I post pictures because I want others to see how I live my life. Whether it be my friends or random people that find me on Instagram, I'm happy to inspire others.
I currently consume most of my media by reading it - usually online. Usually I can get more information this way and review it multiple times. I will only occasionally watch cable news (except in the case of breaking/emerging news with real time updates). I do not publish my own content because nobody cares about what I have to say.
I am so overwhelmed by the amount of fresh content made available. I can't keep up with all the latest and greatest shows on television and Netflix. It actually becomes quite stressful, and I soon begin to develop a fear of missing out. I spent a whole Saturday binge watching Empire. It was well worth it, but that is not a good use of time. I wish there were only four channels, and no Netflix. I wish there were less content, so that the whole country could sort of enjoy a television show in unison like in the good old days. But I don't see that changing anytime soon....
Currently my consumpotion of meida is composed of mainly streaming. I stream my NHL games on my NHL.tv accout. Also, I rarely publish any of my own content, but I do have a YouTube account that I visit daily. Frankly, the only time I watch cable television is during football season, when the Carolina Panthers are in a local viewing market and I can't stream it on my DirectTv NFL Sunday Ticket app. Lastly, when I do publish my own content it is for lesiure and fun at this point.
