Consider sharing it with your friends.

This week you're learning about online advertising. From an advertiser's perspective, digital platforms have numerous advantages over traditional media.

For one, you can hyper-target your audience. Rather than advertising to everyone who's watching a particular show at a particular time you can target people by age, gender, education, interest, products you've previously looked at and more.

Additionally, you can see exactly how effective your campaign is. How many people saw it? How many people click on it? How many people purchased afterward. It's extremely effective.

For all it's advantages there are moral questions we should consider. When does this targeting become an invasion of privacy? Is it OK for me to target 21-year-old MSU students and encourage them to come out for a night of drinking on a Thursday night instead of participating in office hours?

If we know that a certain portion of our audience gets outraged at environmental issues is it moral to create and advertise articles about it to drive up engagement?

How do you feel about online advertising? Where do you draw the line between what works and what's ethical?

At my internship I place a lot of Facebook ads and I'm able to target specific audiences and create monthly reports looking at engagement. For this purpose, I think online advertising is great. I do see how it's an invasion of privacy but I can't say I really mind when I'm online shopping and then go to Facebook and see an ad for a cute shirt. I don't see a problem with targeting 21 year olds to drink; students are able to make their own decisions and that's how bars get the word out. As long as it's morally correct and providing facts, I'm okay with online advertisements.

Online Advertising often feels invasive to many. With the opportunity to target audiences, and use real time bidding to serve catered ads to a person, it seems as though online advertisers know who you are. Personally, I think it's cool that advertisers can use data and these services to serve me an ad that's relevant to me. If I'm going to see banner ads on my Facebook I'd rather see one with relevant content. That being said, I think there is a fine line between specific targeting and serving unethical ads to a certain audience. Advertisers need to be mindful of these when they put their online advertising dollars to work.

Online advertising is a great source for marekting your brand, especially for todays generation, because most people are on there phones and they learn more about different companies and what they have to offer, which gives the company more recognition because they have alot of people visiting their site. For example when I'm on instagram I see alot of sponsor ads on my timeline and sometimes there interesting such as clothing, etc... which then leads to me going to there instagram page or website.

I think that online advertising is something that is vital to a company's purchase cycle and it is really beneficial in a lot of ways. But sometimes targeting people goes way overboard nowadays. I personally think that sometimes it can be a little scary how direct and repetitive online advertising can be. I do think that even though it is annoying, it has to be because the only way people are going to end up buying something is if they are constantly reminded that it's there waiting to be bought! I think that you can draw the line between what works and what's ethical by gauging if people feel like the invasion of privacy is overboard or not. As much as targeted online advertising does work, you wouldn't want your consumers to feel invaded in any way, shape or form.

Personally I enjoy the fact that online advertisment target me specifically. I do base a lot of my purchasing decisions on the advertisments I see so I enjoy seeing advertisments of products I may actually use. I think that online advertising provides this unique and personalized experice. I do understand why people can feel like this is an invation of privacy but if anyone is really concured they just can turn there privacy settings on to prevent advertisers from seeing what they search.

Hello Paige, I most definetly agree that when I see online advertisements I'm a great target becasue I like to learn more about different comapines and give them a chance by buying there products and trying out something new. In my post I mentiond that online advertising is a great aspect to companies because of people like us, we like to venture out and learn more about different comapines that we on our social medias.

I am very conflicted about the prevalence of online marketing. On one hand, it is obviously an invaluable tool for businesses to engage with customers they might never have been able to reach without the internet. On the other hand, i constantly feel my privacy is being compromised by online marketers who are tracking my website cookies and essentially following me online. If I browse a shoe website, then I will be confronted by shoe advertisements wherever I go. For marketers, this is an amazing tool. For customers, it is absolutely discomforting. While I know that my privacy is compromised as soon as I log on to any social media, it does not feel great to have invisible algorithms tracking my every move online.

Online advertising is a great tool for marketers to reach their target market. Having the ability to pin point exactly who you want to reach with your message is a very cool thing I think. I think the information that online ads give back to marketers is very usuful for them in figuring out if their ad was effective or not. I think it is ok to target a 21 year old about drinking. He/she can make that decision themselves if they should drink or go to office hours. The business that posted the ad just wants to make money by having students come into the bar. Student should be held accountable for their actions. If the information given back to marketers was telling them more personal things like where they live and what they look like then that would be drawing the line.

Online advertising is necessary to reach a huge percent of target audience, however it can be a little much sometimes. From personal experience, it's really annoying when I'm just trying to check social media or my email but I keep getting notifications that something I recently looked at is on sale. But that's how it works, because it always pulls me in! I just think that ads do invade privacy sometimes and shouldn't be allowed on certain websites. But on that note, I don't think that it is necessarily unethical, because I've never really heard about ads that specifically target people and encourage touchy subjects like partying or drinking. I think that type of advertising probably has very strict rules as to how they do it.

Once upon a time, I tried to downloead a text book for my class. I opened a page and I clicked downmoad. It showed up a website about donating for poor children. I paid for it because I thought If I want to download I must to pay for this. And next time I clicked download bottom it showed another website about donating. So actually I am annoyed by online advertising. This is a opposite aspect of online advertising. It is hard to define what works and what's ethical. If there is a good example of online advertising. I will suggest Youtube. It is not very annoying because sometimes the ad is just 5 seconds and I can click skip. The online advertising must give people some choice. No one will like to be pushed.

Hmm. This is an interesting question especially with most of us in advertising and digital media. Becuase I will be working in creating online advertisements in my career, I am biased towards them. Although, before college, at one point I hated them because of their annoyance and found it invading my privacy when it came to online. Now that I understand the advertising and marketing side of it I am not as annoyed by it than I would have been.

I'm torn when it comes to online advertising. As a user, I don't like it. I hate when I visit a website, or even click something on accident, and the rest of the ads I see for the next week are for that one visit. It may sound silly, but it gives you the feeling like someone is watching every move you make. On the other hand, I think online advertising is incredibly useful for businesses. Being able to hyper-target specific audiences is actually amazing and can really help in terms of boosting traffic and sales. Due to my current lack of in-depth knowledge about online advertising, I'm not sure that I can determine where to draw the line. I think after I start working and actually using online advertising, I'll then be able to see the difference between what works and what's ethical.

I'm really not a fan of online advertising at all. I think it's super annoying and the fact that you have to pay to not be exposed to it just seems crazy to me, but I understand that that's the reason that a lot of stuff on the internet is "free." If we watch ads, we are able to access so much on the internet for free which is a pretty nice opportunity. I draw the line between what works and what's ethical at a pretty low level. In general, if advertisements are getting people to buy things they don't want/need, that just seems like a bad deal. If the things these people are buying are harmful in any way or incite anger, that seems wrong to me too. I understand though that people need to make money and they're willing to screw other people in order to make that happen.

In my opinion, online advertising has several advantages for either big or small business company. Firstly, it cost less than traditional advertising. Traditional advertising is company send their messages by using television and newspaper, which will cost more than online advertising. Secondly, the company can reach more customers by using online advertising. In addition, it is convenient to control. For example, the advertiser is able to put a picture, visitors can just click that picture and been brought to a specific landing page.

When online advertising comes into my mind, it is hard to tell whether online advertising is the best way of advertisements. It is a controversial topic because some people may think online advertising is immature, however other people may think this kind of advertisement costs less with purposes diversity. In my opinion, different social media have their own purposes and people should use the social media properly without disappointing customers. Companies should use ethical principles to adapt the advertisements they post online.

I feel the online advertising is a advantage, Nowadays is the internet world. So the online advertising can make more people to know the brand, and the consumer use the internet know the brand is more effective. in my opinion I think the advertising also need with the development and progress of society. Also some meaningful online advertising can give comsumer positive effect.

I feel that Online advertising is now necessary from a business aspect with the world becoming more and more internet based. With the popularity of Social Media, you can find a lot of new potential customers there and that means more dollars or your company. Looking from a customer's perspective though,  online advertising can get a little annoying though. When I get online, most of the time I just want to get on Social Media or Do my Homework. The constant ads popping up on my screen sometimes gets annoying. Also sometimes it feels like an invasion of my privacy when you get those adds that are advertising based on what websites you have visited.

Student

I think that the online advertising has both positive and negative sides. But the positive parts is much overweight than the negative parts. The online advertising spread the messages as the fastest, the most convenience, the most efficient way. It promotes the market. It increases the sales of market. And on the other part, if the governor should supervise online advertisement with the violent or sex information more seriously, the negative impart of online advertising will be less. We could still see those advertisement online. The kids are easily influenced by those bad behavior and they don’t even know that it’s wrong. I think the most of the disputes of advertisement are because of that.

Student

I think online advertising is useful and necessary. Online advertising help a lot in business and it is good for the whole economy. If there is no demand, there will be no supply. So how do we defind moral and imoral in online advertising? Personally, the one keep his principle will not be mislead by online advertising and for the one might be mislead by online advertising, they will come out for a night of drinking no matter by seeing a online advertising or asked by others. So they can't just say it is online advertising's fault. The key is to improve the education so that people can know what they can do what they can't. Nothing is perfect and every information might lead someone to a wrong way.

Student

I believe online advertising to be mostly a postitive. It merely offers opportunities to people, yes in an attempt to persuade them to buy some product or service, but I believe the intentions to be more straight forward than not. And that's where the positive aspects arise. It all depends on the consumer, they are the ones that have to be responsible and smart with their choices. No one is forcing them to drink, or smoke, or any other number of things. Although target marketing is giving them a push to do so. But the metaphorical ball is in their court. Businesses main goals are to make money, and in doing so their actions may not always be deemd the most moral. But I for one feel that I would take, having an excessive amount of online ads versus not.

I enjoy the convenience of sites tailoring to my likes and wants, by offering suggestions. It makes my search easier, which saves me time to do other things. The only time I see a line being crossed is when actual political, environmental, or sensitive issues in nature are invloved. If the point is specifically to point the finger and agitate a subject then is when it has gone too far. business practices are not always the nicest, so its hard to expect too much. But common deceny on some fronts goes a long way.

Student

In my opinion, I think online advertising gives businesses a huge oppotunity.  When I am online, I understand that my clicks are being traced and cookies transfer my searches to advertisements when I am not looking.

There is always the question of ethics for businesses.  The example listed above is not that unethical in my opinion.  However if it was advertising to an underage individual, not only would that be unethical it would also be illegal.

With online advertising progressing fast, it is a great tool but it may also become an invasion of privacy.  I think it should ask individuals permission to access their cookies for websites that have content inappropriate for select individuals.  It will be interesting to see how this evolves over time.

Student

I think online advertising is amazing. It is a great tool that has changed the way we exchange information and makes it that much more available. The line between ethical and unethical, I think is where it becomes a danger to someone, if it is an advertisement promoting something that could potentially hurt the viewer or cause them to do something that could be detrminetal to their health is where it goes too far. I don't think this happens often though.
