What is my favorite social network? I use Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. But which is the best?

I would have to say the most value comes from Linkedin. I have almost 4,000 connections. I have used Linkedin to build networks, and join groups, and generally connect with professionals around the world.

Be sure to connect with me on Linkedin so I can give a recommendation when class is over. http://linkedin.com/in/mehraban

Facebook is my second favorite as its fun. YouTube is brilliant, but I need more time to produce videos. Working on this one. Foursquare is great for checking in. Twitter for keeping up on the latest, and putting out information or connecting in a public venue. I have some people at my social media agency who have some very strong opinions on this. I'm sure you do too. So I have to ask...

What's your favorite social network?

This is my second comment on this blog, but as this class has gone on, I've found myself using Twitter more and more and it is increasingly becoming my favorite social network. I can follow all kinds of different people, whether it be for entertainment, school, or work. It gets information out without giving out a ton of information and overwhelming the user with too much content, but it can link to another site so I can research the topic a little more if the tweet interests me. I use other social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn frequently, but for now I would have to say that Twitter is my favorite.

Last time I commented on this blog, I mentioned how valuable facebook can be. However, I must admit I have a love of youtube as well.

I just think that youtube is so versatile. You can post everything on there from funny videos of your kitten, to heavily produced dramatic pieces. What's even better is that doesn't cost you a dime to post.

What's so great about youtube is that a video can become viral in a matter of hours. Some videos become so popular that millions upon millions of users view it. This is definitely a cost-effective tool that advertisers can use to their advantage as long as they can come up with content that viewers enjoy watching.

I've already commented on this post when it was the assigned one for the week, but I thought I would comment again since there is no post this week and it looks like others are doing the same. Since I have developed my LinkedIn, I have grown my connections daily with friends, family, and former work contacts. I like that I can see who views my LinkedIn page. It makes me wonder why these random people are looking. Hopefully my page represents me well, and can lead to opportunities in the future.

I would have to agree that LinkedIn is the most useful for the current situation in my life. I am seeking jobs in Colorado and am trying to network with individuals through LikedIn. There are many groups you can join (I joinded Rocky Mountain Spartan Alumni), discussions you can post (Ex: Moving to the area), and people to connect with. LinkedIn does a great job for those needing to network or market themselves to prospective employers.

I have an account to many social media sites but I would have to say that Twitter is by far the best. To me, Facebook seems more like a place for friends and annoying people who are complaining about their relationship. Twitter is nice becuase there is a 150 word count and I get to follow NHL teams and their advertising and marketing execs (I want to work for the NHL) Twitter lets me interact with the teams and people who are employed by the teams. I find Twitter to be a mini- blog where i can say whatever is on my mind quickly and add a hashtag so other people that may not be following me can see what I said. Twitter's features to customize your page allows someone to show what they are like which is a step above Facebook. I like Google+ as well but no one I know uses it and I am still trying to figure it out

I frequently use several social media networks, but the social media network that I favor more is Twitter. I am more fond of Twitter because, in a way, it minimizes the amount of unnecessary content that users can post online. Twitter forces its users to get straight to the point with their posts in 120 characters or less. As a developer, the minimization of content is beneficial because there is a very small window of time to catch and retain the audience's attention.

My favorite social network is probably twitter. I love the hashtagging and following trends keeps me updated. I also like that I don't follow very many people because I've honestly been considering deleting my facebook because all the stupid people I'm friends with. Yes, I could delete them, but it would take forever. I just think facebook is annoying nowadays, but it is the best way to keep in touch.

I am starting to warm up to linkedin as well. I get emails updating me on the circles I'm in and job postings. I think it's definitely the best network for professionals. Also, there are no stupid posts to get annoyed of!

My favorite website our of all the sites you listed is Twitter. I like twitter because it lets you post your feelings at that current time and keep it moving along the day. Normally one post a day is all that is needed on facebook where as on twitter I can tweet all day. Twitter also keeps you up to date with all the latest current events. Sometimes I forget that a certain show is on then I get on twitter and I am reminded twitter keeps me up to date with a lot of activity. I also like Linkedin a lot just because it is a networking website allows you to meet different people interested or in the same career path as you, I am new to Linkedin but as of now I am really liking the website.

Student

My favorite social network is probably facebook. Facebook was my only form of social networking up until I took this class. My facebook is really well developed through my photographs, info, friends, timeline, and such. I feel like Facebook is the most organized social network, so it is easy to navigate and quick to use.

However, now that I have made a Twitter, Linkedin, Google+, and a blog the time I spent on Facebook has now been spread to all these different networks. I rarely make a Facebook status anymore, instead I tweet what is on my mind since I have connected Twitter to my text messaging. I mainly use Facebook for chatting and photographs now instead of updating people on what I am doing.

I think Linkedin will become more useful to me after I graduate. The problem I have been having with the site so far is that it only lets me connect to people I know due to the privacy settings on many accounts. I wish there was an easier way to link with professional without having to know them first, so that they could see my resume and so I could see if they would be someone I would want to work for.

Student

I have to say my favorite social network is good old Facebook. I like how you have the ability to post statuses, view and upload pictures, and chat with friends. To me, facebook is kind of like 'one-stop shopping'.

It is very interesting how different, more niche, social networks work with larger social networks to create even more opportunities to share content. For example, I often see a friend's Facebook status, and then see the same status has become a tweet. Pinterest is also linked to either Facebook or Twitter allowing you the opportunity to share your pins with your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, and your Pinterest followers.  Instagram photos can also be shared in the same manner.  Social networks seem to be teaming up to create one big network of social media synergy. These pairings and partnerships are aiming to combine the best of each social network and aggregate them into a 'one-stop shopping' newsfeed.

Student

With all these new social networks being created, I've honestly been turned off by social networking all together. I am currently not "in to" any social network in particular, but Instagram and that's only becasue I'm a visual person and I get a kick out of seeing the pictures that people post. Also, I like to share my own. It makes the daily occasions of life more interesting.

I think my main problem with social networks is that you never really know which ones are "in" these days. Then if you don't use them right, they all seem to be the same-- a place for people to unload their social "garbage" for lack of better term. A lot of things people casually post online are usally useless and redundant-- like ultrasound pictures, a million pictures of their babies, and all the dirt about their terrible boyfriend or girlfriend.

Hopefully, after this class I'll have a more clear and positive answer, since we'll be learning how to be more productive with our online presence! :)

I think the context that you prefer to use the network in ultimately decides which will benefit you the most. Up until about a year ago, Facebook provided me with a lot of social connections and entertainment. Recently, I have utilized it to keep in touch with family, old friends, and most importantly to use it for networking and business endeavors. I have maintained contact with colleagues that I have only met briefly, sometimes out of state or country and can communicate with them easily.

Since I am at a time in my life where networking has become not only necessary, but vital, to my career I find LinkedIn of most assistance. Professionally, it allows me to maintain an elagant profile and list out all of my skills and experiences. I find it extremely easy to use and have slowly grown to appreciate all of it's many features it has to offer.

Twitter has definitely taken me the longest to figure out. I think it has a lot of perks, especially for quick surfing, but could be a little more  user-friendly.

Although sometimes I feel like deleteing my profile and leaving facebook altogether, I haven’t been able to do it yet. I like facebook, it is probably my favorite social media outlet, but sometimes it does get overwhelming. The one thing keeping me logged in is the fact that I can keep in contact with the friends I don’t see often, friends that live out of state, across the country, or attend different colleges. It’s nice to keep up with them and see what they are up to. It’s also nice to share content you find on the web with your close friends. A few criticisms I have is that sometimes you get to know a little too much about other people, and people you don’t know too well. But retrospectively, I guess it my fault for accepting friend requests from people that I’m not that interested in. Ultimately, It’s nice to keep up with distant friends and family, and joke around with close friends. Facebook is really what you make of it.

I would have to say Tumblr is my favorite social site. It is fun, easy to use, and even has special applications you can download to make it even EASIER to use. I'm all about simple communication and navigation, and I always find checking my Tumblr addicting. I use it for fun of course, but I have found myself viewing breaking news and important events before most other people are even aware.

I see Facebook as a necessary communication tool, so of course I like that site as well. However Tumblr I find way more efficient and entertaining. I like to discover new things in a light-hearted, human, not "overly-professional" way.

I find it somewhat challenging to balance a ton of social network sites at once, so there are a couple I use all the time, and some I only check once in a while.

Tumblr, Facebook, and Pinterest are my more visited sites.

I will admit that I do not tweet that much and I only update my Linkedin when necessary. I also have a YouTube account, just for the heck of it.

Student

My favorite social network is LinkedIn. I believe it can be a great career-tool if used properly. My favorite thing about Linkedin is that I can see who has viewed my profile and reach out to them. I use Linkedin as a place to host my resume, store my Rolodex, and make new connections. I have yet to begin my full-time job search but when I do I will utlize that aspect of Linkedin as well. I worked extensively with Linkedin advertising for a past internship and I found the targeting options on Linkedin to be quite beneficial. Being able to target by job function, group, and region allowed me to reach a very specific audience. The groups on Linkedin are also great for marketing. For my internship I would join groups that contained my target market and then I would post content that was beneficial to the group. The thing I found most surprising was that the comments I received on my posts where all positive, with many people thanking me for making them aware of my company's resources. I never expected to receive such positive responses from content that was clearly promotional.

I'd say that the most influential social network for me was Facebook, though twitter is my current favorite, probably followed closely by instragram. I don't use FB like I used to because my friend list had become saturated with family and other authoritative figures, which made censoring my content a major component of every post, plus it's tied directly to your name and other personal info. After a first hand experience with the dangers associated with the wealth of information that Facebook catalogs, I shied away from using it daily. It got to a point where I had to go on a campaign of setting privacy setting, changing my name and, now if I'm on Facebook, its for chatting or working on some group based project for class.

Twitter on the other hand, was a breath of fresh air. On twitter I have more control over who views my content, which therefore eases my mind about being frank and openly addressing any sort of issue, even reserving the right to be vulgar if the situation calls for it. On Twitter, even confined to 160 characters at a time I make an effort to express myself be it politically correct or not. This is accomplished because twitter doesn't attempt to tie back to any of my other personal details, so I can behave on twitter as if a prospective employer or other possibly concerned party wont see it, and though some record will remain, It will not be tied to my person unless I go out of my way to ensure otherwise. My view of "social" requires this freedom for true enjoyment.

InstaGram has got to be one of the best time passing ideas, EVER, and I see untapped opportunity for commercial gain and brand communications. I'm sure you've heard the saying "A picture speaks a thousand words", well its true and if businesses can come up with a nifty way to piggyback on instragrams growth, those same pictures may begin to speak in dollars lol.

I have two favorite networking sites. I love Twitter and I have a new found love for Linkedin.  Since I started my internship with the Kellogg Company I have been using Linkedin to connect with fellow interns and with executives inside to company. Linkedin helps me to build myself up as a brand and it also helps me to make connections with people so that I can possibly secure a job in the future. I love twitter because it is a great source of entertainment and I have a new found love for twitter as a way to market yourself as a brand. I love watching TV with my twitter followers it is entertaining to see everyones reations when we are all watching a television show.

Student

Before this class, I frequently used Facebook, Twitter, and watched videos on YouTube. I now have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and Linkedin. As of now, I still think that I like Facebook the best. It has the largest number of my friends on it and I can chat, look at pictures, and read articles all on one site. I like Twitter because people are required to keep it short, even if they tweet multiple times. Google+ seems like it takes a lot of work, maybe it will grow on me. Pinterest is entertaining, but it seems to revolve around a lot of materialism which I don't like to dwell on when I can avoid it. YouTube is entertaining, but I haven't produced videos, so I just consume media on it. Linkedin seems to be the most career related social network. I am excited to start making connections and look through everything that the site has to offer.

My favorite social network hands down is Twitter I can shoot out whatever random thought comes to mind whenever. Outside of it's function as a way to communicate, it helps keep me abreast of what's happening.

For example, I didn't have to watch American Idol last week to know that Jessica lost. Why? Because half of my timeline and people around the world were tweeting about it. Beyonce's Revel concert is currently going on in Atlantic City, I haven't even left East Lansing but I've seen all of it like I was there. Why?!?!? User generated videos tweeted by fans allow me to see Beyonce at the Revel, even though I'm at home. I also like twitter because of the retweet capability. It's easy to get the word out about something when people continuously retweet. And it's not just thoughts that can be retweeted either. Photos and videos and easily be retweeted by the masses who use the site.

However, as I venture more into corporate America I think LinkedIn may take the lead as my new favorite site. I love anything that makes finding a job easier for me.

Student

I'd have to say LinkedIn is my new favorite. It was a lifesaver when I was hunting for jobs a month ago. You can easily find people who are hiring and discover jobs that aren't even posted on company's websites. Not only that, it's a great way to get in touch with like minded people.

In my job hunt, I got creative and started adding my LinkedIn contact on the bottom of my paper resumes. By doing so, LinkedIn became a way for track my networking effectiveness. I could always tell when I was about to get a job interview if my "views" increased from members of the given company or if people chose to connect with me after chatting.

Student

Amen to that: LinkedIn does wonders that Facebook or Twitter cannot. Facebook is fun and Twitter is great for news, but LinkedIn definitely has the most value.

Just recently I was able to have someone from a past internship introduce me to his HR friend, the recruiter for a job at which I'm applying. There's no way Facebook would have been able to grant me the same introduction.

The more I update my LinkedIn too, the more "views" I get as well- which in comparison to Facebook, actually means something. LinkedIn is exciting in that way because it can have a real impact on my career. Hopefully, that will prove true soon.

Student

My favorite social networking site is Facebook. I used LinkedIn for my career networking, Twitter I found impersonal and annoying, Youtube I use to pass the time, but I check Facebook on a regular basis. I have "fiends" all around the world. In different countries and different US states. Facebook allows me to keep in touch with them. Therefore, if I ever need certain skills or help, or if I am visiting a part of the world they live in because of our facebook interaction I am able to talk to them without seeming like a stranger.  Despite its frequent user interface changes it remains easy to operate. In fact a few months after its initial change and a period of outcry from the public everybody settles back down and realizes the changes actually made life easier for them in cyberspace.

Student

As a young adult looking forward to entering the professional world, I completely agree that LinkedIn provides the most value. I had already started a LinkedIn profile as I was preparing to graduate from my undergraduate studies, but this class and the LinkedIn chapter in our NMDL Resource Book really got me taking a critical eye about how to maximize LinkedIn's utility. Thanks to that, my enjoyment of LinkedIn is on the rise, and I know that when I link to the other things we'll be creating in this class (blogs, other social media profiles, etc.) that LinkedIn will continue to grow in enjoyment and usefullness.

Facebook and Twitter do have aspects that I enjoy. But as I look toward more serious pursuits of a more professional nature, the opportunities to display my own credentials, search out valuable resources and connect with those who can help me along will be invaluable. I look forward to moving toward that point.

Student

I personally expansive and Facebook the most.  I think I like it mainly because of the familiarity.  I rarely used a social networking site prior to this course, and I rarely use Facebook to be honest.  The thing about Facebook is that every single one of my friends has a facebook account.  As a college student, many people only contact each other through Facebook and Twitter.  It is easy to use and has hundreds of millions of users.  Though I don't use them often, LinkedIn and Google+ are assets and they are very useful for connecting workers to potential employees, college students to one another, and also professors to their college students.  I understand the usefulness of social networking better now and I plan on utilizing these social media resources much more now that I have started this course.

Student

Instagram would have to be my favorite Social Networking site. Over time my favorite social networking site has changed, at first Facebook was the thing to have and I really enjoyed having it but over time Facebook has become Spam website to me. It seems they are always trying to sell you something and the ads on Facebook seem to be doubling by the minute, now I only use Facebook as a means of staying in touch with friends that I can no longer see on a regular basis. I also have a Linkedin account but because I am new to it, I have no clue how to fully use that website yet. Nowadays I only use Instagram and Twitter because these two websites are the most up to date and keep you informed on whats happening and trending at the moment. I prefer Instagram because its more visual and I like to see the different photos that my friends post and Instagram just seems to be more interesting to me than Twitter.

Student

My favorite social network is Twitter. Twitter for me came just in time when I was bored with Facebook. Even though my Facebook is still active, I don’t use it often. My friends and I have a saying that” once your parents are on the site, it’s time to deactivate”. Facebook became these huge platforms that everyone was on including millions of ads and spam. Twitter was simple, maybe too simple. Sending 140 characters tweets about whatever, whenever. I loved it, your smallest thoughts are posted, pictures, and trending topics. Twitter provides this “right now” factor, if something is coming on it the media, I reach for twitter first. Twitter was also more relax and fun than Facebook. Creating your own twitter handle, private pages and of course followers. Twitter gave you the control to see what you want on your profile by following who you want. Twitter was also the source of many opportunities and networking events for me. I’m an aspiring Makeup Artist and I have met photographers, hairstylist, and other Makeup Artist through Twitter. You also get an advantage on Twitter because you can know the stuff about anyone and use it as a networking tool. For example, I had a meeting with a Makeup Artist and Image consultant about a job opportunity and while doing research on my interviewer, I took a visit to her Twitter page that I follow. I learn what she liked in other artists, her preference in style and technique and much more. More than what I found on her Facebook page filled with kids birthday pictures.

Student

My favorite social network that I use the most frequently is Twitter. I really enjoy the fact that you can observe what numerous users are doing at one time. I enjoy the fact that you view the status of many users including, friends, family, news sites, politics and many companies. I am a frequent user of Facebook but I definately use Twitter much more. I like to view pictures on Facebook and see what friends are up to. I use Twitter to view all things. I am a current user of Linkedin, I am just not that familiar with the site. I do agree that it is a great networking device and will definately build your career profile and allow you to contact users to advance your career.

I am looking forward to advance my knowledge in all social networks in this class. I would like to become much more familar with Linkedin so I can use it more this year as I am finishing up my undergrad. I also am a user of Instagram, Four Square, and Pinterest. I like using these sites but I do not use them as frequently as Twitter.

Student

I think my favorite social networking site is Facebook. I have used LinkedIn and Twitter before this class too, but the site I check and use daily is Facebook. The thing about Twitter is, it's fun, but for me it feels really impersonal. I get a lot of motorsport new from Twitter, live updates and such, but, when there is no event, I rarely lon on anymore. I think, I never actually learned how to use  LinkedIn effectively. I set up a profile, because everyone said  it's good for me, professionally. But because I never truly learned how to use this tool, I didn't get the benefits I was expecting from it.

I live a continent away from my high school friends and family, so for me Facebook is a must to keep in touch with everybody. I like that it's a WYSIWYG website, easy to operate. The only thing, that bothers me about it thought, is that they change basic things way too frequently. There's an old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Facebook has gone against this way too often, and I've heard many other users complain about this too.

Student

My favorite social network right now is Twitter. It is fun to have something where I can post whatever is on my mind at any moment. It is convienent to connect with friends, family, businesses, brands and celebrities. It is like facebook except with less updates on everything. I like using twitter mostly to connect with friends but there have been times where I've seen a tweet from a business that has offered deals or news that is beneficial to me. It is probably one of the best social networking tools out there. Facebook is my second favorite, even though I get tired of using it. It is fun to see pictures of people you have not seen in a while and connect with friends and family that might live father away. I do not go on it as often anymore though.

I just started using LinkedIn and Google+ for this class, so I have not decided if I like them or not. LinkedIn I know I will end up learning to love because it could help me with getting a job and making new, higher up connections that I do not have now. Google+ seems like it might be cool. I like how they offer what is trending but I still have to experience more of it to decide if I like it or not. I also just started a Tumblr account which I know I am going to like because they separate what blogs you can follow by categories and it seems like a fun website.

Student

As of right now my favorite social networking site is Twitter you can use it as your personal and/or a work purpose.  What makes me enjoy Twitter is that there is a limit to 140 characters which Facebook should enforce since some people just go on rants (like I am right now) and they don’t realize that most people don’t care when they do it all the time. That’s what phones are for. Although I have used Facebook the longest I don’t feel like you can use it professionally there is so much personal stuff on there. I like twitter for the fact that you can use it as personal and/or work related page. I enjoy LinkedIn but I feel that is only to be used for professional purposes. I am not too familiar with Google + but from what I have explored it seems very similar to Facebook.

So if you haven’t figured it out my favorite social networking site is Twitter.

Student

Among the social networks out there, Twitter is by far my favorite, followed by Facebook, Instagram and in no particular order, LinkedIn and Google +. I mainly created LinkedIn and Google + for this class, and am still not entirely sure how to use either one of them, but I'm sure I'll learn throughout the semester.

I find Twitter particularly easy to use once you get used to it. I use it to follow my favorite athletes, celebrities, and of course to keep up with my friends. The thing I like most about Twitter is its unbelievable ability to keep the world constantly updated. For example, I follow many sports writers for ESPN, MSU, etc., and I usually find out breaking news from them via Twitter before it ever reaches the news stations such as ESPN. I also like to use it to express myself, and what I'm doing constantly. I try and entertain my followers as much as possible, because let's be honest, no one wants to read a boring feed. I find the hashtags and trends particularly helpful and entertaining, because you can see how people feel about a particular issue that is of importance at the time, and if you can relate to them, you might even give them a follow which also extends your social network.

As for Facebook, I still check it regularly but I don't use it nearly as much as I used to. I'll update my status when something important happens, for instance, my brother's wedding in March. I also use it to look at pictures, as well as uploading pictures for my family and friends to see. For more personal posts, I tend to use Twitter, mainly because most of my family is not on it. I also use Instagram to post pictures, but rarely ever link them to Facebook (mostly Twitter).

Like I said earlier in this comment, I am still getting used to LinkedIn and Google +. Google + confuses the hell out of me to be honest, but I get how LinkedIn works. I'll have to get used to both of them over the course of the semester though.

We have come a long way since the days of MySpace and friendster. I remember using both of them back in my high school years. I never liked MySpace because it was a blog and I never really liked updating since I was so lazy. I was more of a friendster user and I did participate a lot on that website. Friendster was so big that even the outcasts in my school used it, and had more than 500 friends on their friends list.

Facebook has definitely been the game changer in the social media scene. I first created mine when I came to college (which was in 2005) and have been a member since. I am the type of person that doesn't really interact much in the virtual world, but I have these accounts to keep in touch with friends who are half way around the world. This may be the beauty of modern technology, that we need the comfort of friends and family, and social media sites like facebook and twitter makes this bond even tighter. I  can say that I use facebook the most among my social media sites. Mainly due to project groups and since most of my friends are using facebook.

I remember my friend's invitation on Google+, which he remarked that he preferred Google+ to facebook because you don't have many people interacting there. That was an interesting argument because social media sites build on people interacting with each other but he preferred the opposite.

Student

When I think social networking, I first think of MySpace and where we have came since then. Facebook completely took over because of usability and a clean interface. But, like a new things, they spike, climax, peak and then they start to decline in popularity.

For me Facebook is definitely on the decline. I don't enjoy it the way I used to 2-3 years ago. First it was the games, the apps, all of the annoying requests I would get. When they opened it up for anyone of all ages, my interest really began to decline. I don't want to have conflicts because my mother or her friends want to Facebook friend me, and I really don't have anything on there I want to share with them. The other thing that has turned me off about Facebook is the lack of privacy. Nothing is truly private. You cannot delete all your contents, and with the new TOS in 2009 (I believe this was the year) you had to agree that even if you choose to delete your Facebook forever, all your contents remains on their servers. Anything you upload to Facebook they have the rights to use. (I learned all of this from Interpersonal Communication course at MSU taught by Steve McCornack and his wife Kelly.) This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as why I am turned off by Facebook.

Anyway, while I do see some positives about using the website, and I enjoy keeping in touch this way with old class mates and friends from the past, there is a lot about it that turns me off and causes me to censor myself more than I'd like to.

Right now, I am much more interested in participating in other means of social networking such as YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram (despite it being sold to Facebook). If I had to choose one, I would choose Instagram. I love using pictures to tell my story and the use of the hash tags is really convenient. The next one I'll consider is Tumblr. I think I may choose that website for my blog.

Student

Facebook is by far my favorite social network. I created my Facebook account in my freshman year of highschool and it immediately grasped me into its world. I spent just about every second updating my status and finding new people to add as a friend. But no its not so often, more of a leisure thing. What is the most compelling aspect of Facebook is the many connections that can be made. Every so many months I make a connection with a long lost friend which is wonderful. Without a social network like Facebook, I'm not sure if I would make so many connections on my own.

The photo albums is something that also makes Facebook my favorite. The concept of you being able to see pictures from ten years ago is astounding. To be able to have a conversation about a goofy picuture, is wonderful. Whether you are old or young, Facebook will serve the same purpose!

Student

Before this class I was not very big into social networks, but upon building and using several I think that Vimeo is my favorite social network. It seems to hold a higher level of professionalism and creativity than youtube. I have submitted a few short films myself and really like the quality of the videos as well as the easy embed options. There are an extraordinarily large amount of talented people on the website and the comments do not degenerate into the mindless political banter (which while often humorous is ultimately distracting) which plagues youtube. It is refreshing to see a smaller site like vimeo build such a loyal fanbase and their $60 annual pro package actually is a good proposition if you utilize the website enough.

Student

The social media networks I use are facebook, twitter, instagram, and youtube. I would say my favorite ones to use are instagram and twitter. I remember twitter first came out I said I would never get one and its pointless becuase I have a facebook. but now its funny that Im rarely ever one facebook nowadays and Im on twitter everyday! Instagram is a fairly new social media website thats on most iphone and driod cell phones. As time passes technology changes as well when sometimg new comes along everywhere will more than likely follow the trend and I think thats whats beginning to happen. I still use facebook but im not on their everyday how I use to be im maily on their looking at pictures or uploading them. Im pretty sure within the next year their will be a new social media site to come along and people will follow that trend..its all about keeping up!

My favorite site to use is Twitter. I like the short message style of Twitter because it requires less reading on my part. Our society is dominated by the concept of time and whether we are spending it the correct and most efficient way. 140 characters is a perfect length for people just skimming through. Twitter is also a great platform to connect with people like me. I have met many people online through Twitter where we connect over the similar content of our tweets.

I would have to agree with you, Derek, in that LinkedIn is probably the most important site that we will be using. I just got it started a little bit before this class, mostly because my teachers kept talking about it. I knew it would be important later on, but I didn't really realize that it was more important to start early with it. This class gives me an excuse to keep using and updating it, as well as valuable resources within the site to keep using it.

Facebook is losing its appeal to me, simply because it keeps changing. Google Plus seems way to high maitenence for me, especially because I'm used to working with Twitter, which has given me no problems in the 3 years I've been on there.

I use all of the social networks you mentioned in your blog post. I’ve used Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for years. I just created a Linkedin for this class, but I’ve needed to make one as I am almost done with school.

I would say Facebook is my favorite social network because it is the one that I connect with the most people on. Facebook also displays more information than others, and it’s easy to view pictures and interests of other people. I have also had my Facebook longer than any other social network, so maybe that has something to do with why I like it the best.

Twitter is right behind Facebook, and in recent months I have started using it more and more. It’s crazy how fast news can spread by using Twitter. Another aspect is it seems easier to connect with athletes, celebrities, etc. I am fascinated by the connection to people that I probably will never meet. If the amount of clutter on Facebook continues to rise, I would not be surprised if Twitter takes over as my favorite social network.

I’m excited to grow my Linkedin profile. It is definitely due to the fact that I am almost done with school, and can use it to grow in the business world. Hopefully I learn how to effectively use my page to my advantage as I step into the real world.

The social network that I use the most is definitely Facebook. Facebook makes it easy to connect with friends and family and to see what people in your networks are up to. This can be a good thing a lot of times, but sometimes I find myself not wanting to know some of the things that people are posting.

Twitter follows as my next favorite; it can be very informative if you follow the right people. You can use Twitter for news or sports updates, or simply something to laugh at.

Sometimes for me, Facebook and Twitter can become repetitive, and I find myself looking for a little cyber getaway. I use Stumbleupon.com quite a bit to find new and interesting websites, pictures, and stories. The cool thing about Stumbleupon is that if you don’t know what you’re in the mood for, you can “stumble” all of your interests and find something you might like, that you never knew existed. If you are looking for something more specific, say “cars” you could “stumble” just that.

So I would say that Facebook and Twitter are my favorite for interacting with other people, but Stumbleupon is my favorite to discover new things that other people are interested in.

My favorite social network is Twitter. I like the way that it is setup and I feel like twitter comes the closes to texting and getting in touch with someone fast. I feel like twitter is a good source for someone who is too young to have a cell phone and wants to get in touch with their friends they can or if you loose a phone or your phone gets broken its a fast way to let your friends know and family if you dont have any other way of telling them you can jump on the computer and tweet them letting them know. Another one of my favorite social network would be facebook even though I do not use facebook as much as I used to when I first created a facebook page. It is a good source to get in touch with someone as well and meet new friends as well as find old friends that you may have went to school with and have not seen in a while this social network is a good way to get back connected.

The main social media sites I use are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. I use each one for somewhat different purposes, so I would have to say my favorite social network changes based on what I'm using it for.

Facebook has been the site I've used the longest, and am therefore the most familar with. I use Facebook primarily for keeping in touch with friends and family, and very rarely for doing anything business or career-related. I've recently made my profile private, so only people I am friends with can see what I post or pictures that I'm tagged in.

I would have to agree in that the most value comes from LinkedIn. I haven't had a LinkedIn profile for very long, but I can already see the value that comes from it. Making connections and getting recommendations is important, especially for someone graduating in the next year and beginning the job search. Twitter is a site that falls kind of in the middle for me. I follow family and friends, but also companies that I potentially want to work for, and people who are influential in the public relations industry. I think that as time goes on, Twitter's influence will only increase.

Pinterest is a site that I'm just becoming familiar with. Right now, I don't use it for anything public relations related, but I expect that will change as it too becomes more widely used.

Choosing my favorite social network is actually more confusing for me to answer than I first thought. It just seems so natural to say Facebook because that was the first social network I joined, the social network I have consistently used for the longest amount of time, and the social network I visit most frequently in a given day; however, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that these factors didn’t necessarily mean Facebook was my favorite social network. I find that while I visit Facebook daily, scroll through my news feed, browse friends’ and family’s photo albums, and occasionally “like” a status, I don’t personally contribute many posts, statuses, or links for my Facebook friends to see on my profile. I was an avid contributor when I first created my profile, but as time passes, I have become more of a Facebook “viewer” and “occasional commenter” than a “poster.”

Right now, I would say Pinterest is my favorite social network. About six months ago I joined Pinterest, and my friend was correct when she said to me, “Now you will never get any work done.” What I love the most about Pinterest is its balance of fun and useful information. The constant sharing and flow of resources, links, project ideas, and random funny images always keeps the social network fresh, useful, and entertaining. I love that my pin boards and pin images speak to who I am, what I am interested in, and what I like. Within the last month, I have used Pinterest to brainstorm ideas for a bridal shower I am planning and for my nephew’s birthday party, to find inspiration for paint colors to use in my new apartment and for a few party invitations I am designing, and to search for new recipes to try and for workout tips and routines to follow.

I guess what I realized after reading this week’s blog post is that I enjoy pinning much more than I enjoy posting. While Facebook is a great for communicating with friends and family, I would much rather show my personality through my Pinterest pins and boards than through statuses and wall posts. Pinterest has quickly become my favorite social network, and I think I will continue to be a frequent user.

I definitely like to use facebook as my social media network, back in high school I used “my space” as a starter. I had a hard time adjusting to facebook when it first came out but as times go by every single time I go into the internet the first thing I check is not an email account but my facebook account. It is stunning that I can share my photos my thoughts and my comments with my friends and able to see their photos, their thoughts and their feedbacks. After I signed up for the ADV420 class I found out about many other social network services that I can use. When I signed up as a Linkedin member I was surprised that when I set up my profile, Linkedin strictly make my profile based on my resume and the style and the form was all related for the business pruposes.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I'd have to say that Facebook is my favorite social network because it allows you to share the most. i primarily use social networks to keep in touch people I'm not as close to as I used to be -- so yes, I am that stereotypical Facebook "stalker" though I don't necessarily view that as a bad thing. I only friend people that I actually want to know what's going on with their lives so mostly I see stalking as catching up with people I don't have the time to sit down and talk to every day. I look really like Twitter as well because it allows you to find out what someone is doing at a certain moment but it leaves too much to be desired for me. There are plenty of times that I want to tweet something but I constantly have to refine what I'm saying to fit in only 140 characters, which can sometimes be a pain to me. LinkedIn is too foreign to me at this point for me to have an educated opinion about it so as of now, I'd definitely have to go with Facebook.

As of now, I can't really pick a favorite as I am still learning to like social media sites. Starting with Twitter, we're on a first date and it is not going well! For some reason, I don't find it very user friendly and I'm having to weed through the @s, links and hash tags to try to get the gist of the message. Too cumbersome for my taste, and I find myself planning how to let Twitter down easy once our parents stop setting us up (aka this class is over, no offense!). Facebook on the other hand is that on again off again friend, where sometimes you mesh so well, and other times you can't stand each other, so you take a hiatus. Admittedly, I was a late adopter to Facebook, and have learned to appreciate its benefits, but struggle greatly with the "to post or not to post" question. Additionally, I am intrigued by how it seems that so many personal posts highlight good news, and omit the nastier sides of life, and how this influences our perceptions of others and ourselves. Finally, LinkedIn is right up my alley and I can really see the potential for a long term friendship, but in many ways I struggle here also, with social media sites crossing personal and professional lines...if you focus on branding yourself professionally in social media, how can you use it personally as well?

Aha! Should have done the comment on the blog before I did my assignment. Pretty similar topics. Then again, we're all probably goign to cover the same stuff of here. Personally, I like Twitter the most. it's the most entertaining, since people let themselves get scandalous on there. At least my friends do. Facebook is starting to get crowded with ads, old people that don't really know what they are doing and there's a lot of pressure to keep it clean since so many businesses can access your page before hiring you (I know this is probably true with Twitter as well but it feels safer for some reason). There are obvioulsy more options and ways to use Facebook, but I enjoy the simpleness that Twitter offers.

This post will sound like I’m singing the phrases of Facebook because I am.

As I mentioned during last week’s class, I’ve found it to be a great “online reunion.” Facebook allows me to keep up with people with whom who I grew up, who aren’t necessary friends, but I still have some interest in their lives. I went to an “in person” class reunion last summer, and it was a nice “ice breaker” to have a short biography in my head before I approached someone. (“How are your twins, Marty and Mary? How’s your job at the pencil factory? How was your trip to Vacationland?”) It seemed to take some of the awkwardness out of the situation, and most people appreciated that I knew the names of their kids and such.

I think one of the keys to the success of Facebook is the fact that they created a simple platform. I now realize I was eager to reconnect with people years before Facebook came along. I was on MySpace, Friendster, and Classmates.com prior to Facebook, but I hadn’t done much with those sites because none were as easy to navigate. However, I took to Facebook immediately. Like so many other companies and innovators, they weren’t the first to come along with a certain product – they just did it better.

I’m a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due – Facebook is great.

I just created my Pinterest account, and I like that it is a place to showcase my interests through the boards (great for categorizing interest). I like the fact that you can find your own items or repin items that others have found. I like that its similar to a vision board, where you can capture ideas and topics relevant to my ideas or things I might like to research.

I also like LinkedIn, and since I have revised my profile based on the lecture you gave, I can really see the potential for connecting to people, groups and companies. I think I'll be more engaged in looking up resources. My challenge is going to be Twitter; although I made a resolve and tweeted that I was going to use it once a day (has not happened).

My favorite social network would have to be Twitter. I LOVE Twitter! My friends got me started on about a year and a half ago and at the time, barely anyone was using it. Eventually my network has grown to be someting to be proud of and more people seem to be joining. I personally enjoy Twitter because it allows you to connect with friends and follow companies and people you truly admire. It is so simple to use and isn't cluttered with advertisements and the millions of apps, groups, pages, events, etc. that are on Facebook. It allows you to follow people that you truly care about and hear what they have to say. Since I feel like Facebook is at times a popularity contest, Twitter doesn't have the option to "like", rather you can re-tweet and quote tweets that are posted to your own page. To me, it's much more personal and close-knit than Facebook and much easier to use and really fun. I especially like reading tweets from months past and have had some pretty good laughs following certain parody accounts!

My favorite social media network is Facebook - but, I think this is because I am relatively new to all the other social media platforms (twitter, linkedin, youtube, etc.) Facebook allows me to connect with my friends and family who are truly spread around the world, connect with peers in Facebook groups, follow my favorite brands/companies, remember birthdays, and many other options. After just setting up my LinkedIn account this week, I have to say that LinkedIn has amazing potential for my professional life. There are friends and colleagues of mine who I share close connections with that are working for great companies that I am happy to have connections with. I also really like the feature that you can see who viewed your profile on LinkedIn; I have already started discussing future research with a Director of Poverty and Research for a hospital in Indiana that was connected to my graduate studies advisor - all because I saw that he viewed my page. It is a great way to market your skills as an employee and share your passions about what it is you want to do with your life.
