Q:What are your top five important factors of online advertising?

1. Add value - Users are in control of the online space. If you're pushing out advertisements that serve you and not your audience they will ignore, block and skip them.

2. Know your metrics - Understand what you're hoping to accomplish. You should have some measurable result that is tied back to every campaign. Do you want to grow your e-mail list? Drive more sales? Get people to show up for an event? Advertising for the sake of advertising is throwing away time and resources.

3. Be authentic - Understand the brand story and reach out to your audience in an authentic way.

4. Target - We're past the point of mass media buying. The beauty of online advertising is how incredibly targeted you can be. Are you trying to reach 28 year old religous female dog owners? Guess what? With Facebook you can do that. Want to target people who are passionate about ball bearings? Yup, you can do that too. By targeting not only can you laser in on the people most likely to engage, you can also craft a message that specifically resonates with them.

5. Always be testing - Online advertising makes it extremely easy to test multiple different campaigns, landing pages, messages, etc... to see which performs the best. Small changes in wording, capitlization, imagery and tone can make a huge difference at scale. Don't assume you've "guessed" the most effective approach, test and learn what approach works best.

In your opinion, how can I make my LinkedIn profile stand out to future employers without being over-the-top or unprofessional?

Demonstate passion for your industry. I don't mean this in a fake, over the top way where you literally spell out "I'm passionate about advertising." Demonstrate that you're passionate. Have a link to a blog where you discuss important topics related to the industry. Get internships with local agencies demonstrating you value learning over partying or getting a unrealated to get a quick buck. Ask for recommendations from those you worked with at those agencies.

It's really easy to see who is actually pasionate and interested about an industry and those who are faking it. Dive in and demonstrate it. It makes it very easy to stand out via LinkedIn profile or through your resume.

When a business is just starting up and decides to use social media to advertise their new business, how do they get people to follow and trust them right away when they do not have much, if any, business or other followers?

You start small. There is nothing wrong with only having a few followers when you start out, one follower is better than no followers. The easiest first step is to ask friends, family and coworkers to follow you. That should be enough to at least get a dozen people. From there, start posting valuable content supplemented with free organic tools like hash tags or occationally asking for retweets or reposts.

If you're regularlly posting valuable content then naturally you'll start gathering a following and build trust.

I have some friends who recently have chosen to delete all of their social media accounts and no longer partake in any social media. Would you say this is a good or bad move professionally? As long as you have a resume and some samples of your work is it really necessary to have any other platforms?

Can you get a job in advertising without a social media presence? Probably. Is it a good career move? Definitley not. You're going to fight an uphill battle in any communication based field if at every interview you have a conversation about how you swore off the biggest behavioral shift of this century. How can you be an effective advertisor if you don't communicate the way your audience does?

Social Media can be dangerous to some if they aren't monitoring what they are sharing or posting. Some people can share too much of personal things. This article has 7 forms of advice of what not to post. I think it is important to have social media becuase it is always changing and becoming a part of everyday life and brands are taking over to hit different demographics. Twitter is a great way to get followers and post some content that people can click on to learn more but I imagine it would be hard for smaller businesses to gain momentum. Using promoted tweets to get on different feeds is a good idea to reach out to different people and if someone retweets a tweet then one of their friends might trust it more because their friend informed them. How long does this go on for though until a company reaches their standard?

Student

My question is specifically about Instagram. For some reason I feel Instagram does the best job of blending the sponsored posts with regular ones. Do you feel the same way? If not what platform do you think does it best?

Having companies and businesses keep a close eye on what is posted online restricts the ability of the employee to get a career that could potentionally benefit the company. Is there any way that the company can't use what is posted on social media as a leverage against a potential employee?

Student

I find it amazing how in today's day and age, social media is such an important factor when it comes to a persona, professional experience, For example, using social media 6 years ago (Myspace) I never even considered for a second that it would be used for anything professional, where now, I use social media to look at many different companies and organizations, and try to get an understanding of their view points. Not only that, but being able to use social media for professional comapnies to look at me.

Although social media is a great way to get exposure in the business world, especially LinkedIn, many people use it to their disadvantage and post material that will restrict them from getting their dream job. Many of the comments made on these social media were before people realized the affect it could have down the road. Is there a way to restore your reputation on social media, even if the posts you made were from when you were young and ignorant?

Student

Going off the point you mentioned about knowing your metrics, is there a type of planning process in which advertisers should be following in order to make sure they are hitting every base and know exactly what they are looking/aiming for with their advertisements? I feel it would be helpful to have some sort of guideline or maybe even a checklist to follow when making these advertising decisions.

Student

I know that conduct on social media is monitored by companies and potential employers. But, do you think there is a line that shouldn't be crossed? I feel that because it is called social media I should be allowed to interact with my friends and family how I want and not be afraid to post something because it might hinder my chances of landing a job or kickstarting my career.

Good question!

I believe that it is necessary to keep your social media platforms because it is the Internet world. Everyone; most people I should say, live inside the Internet. Many activities are being done through Internet space. You basically cannot imagine the world without Internet. In other words, Internet is where you can possibly get an opportunity for anything. It is true that all you need are resume and experience samples; however, there is time when invisible chances are coming close. It will be a huge loss of an opportunity if someone tries to reach you and you are not available in the space. It is critical to keep all of your spaces and surroundings active, so that people who want or need you can reach you.

Is there anyway to determine how much effort should be put in to SEO as opposed to direct social media marketing? Does it mainly depend on what the company does specifically?

Student

I personally do not think deleting social media accounts are a bad move, but I would like to also mention that social media has become more than just a way to communicate. Nowday, companies are using paid, earned, owned media to advertise their product and obtain feedback from customers. Social media reveals the trend, people's need, and provide unlimited opinions from the audience. Therefore we can't just ignore and disconnect ourselves from the social media. We should be able to take an advantage from social media to gain and share our thoughts and resources.

Student

I know that you should practice certain behaviors on social media, like not posting things that are too controversial, illegal or "trashy." But what are the limits as far as expressing your opinions or jokes posted?

I deleted my Twitter. I feel like it is invaluable to a company to see what I am posting because it is all opinion and if they do not agree with what I have said or don't think what I am posting is funny or relevant, doesn't that just make me look bad?

Student

I don't think so, I have a twitter account but I barely use it. I think that with all this upcoming social media websites, twitter has decreased in the market. I think it has moved to an older target market than us. In my opinion if twitter doesn't rebrand themselves and do more innovative things with its website, this will disappear in a couple of years.

What are the most important steps to take in making sure that you are reaching your target market when advertising? I get that there is a target market but beyond that what is the best way to reach that market, and in the end accomplish the goals you are setting. Also as far as building your brand, what is the best way to gain interest aside from "interesting" or "eye catching" advertisments.

This article made me feel a bit guilty. The reason being, I feel like my LinkedIn profile might be a tad over the top. If I were to have advertising experience, it'd be easy to understand my passion for it. But, I do not. One can only understand through the words I use to explain it.  My question for this week would be, how does a student like me, with very little job experience, express their passion of advertising without coming off to strong?

Student

My question is what makes an ad online stand out? For the most part, I find ads annoying when I am on a website. I find them distracting and rarely take the time to analyze them. So what is a good pull factor to make your audience want to interact with the ad?

What would you say you've seen the most on student LinkedIn accounts that would qualify as a "Red Flag" for faking their passion for advertising or marketing? I know you said that obviously stating your passion is not the way to go, but I was wondering what components of a person's LinkedIn profile are automatically associated with a "faker" in your experience.

Student

Many people have spoken about how deleting your personal social media is a bad career move, and I completely agree. I think an alternative to deleting your social media would be to start something back up, create a new account, and be active on it as much as you wish. I think it's important to prove to your employers that you know how to use social media personally and professionally. Ultimately, companies want a personal experience on a professional level and you must prove that you are capable of that.

Student

You talk about how having a social media presence is important when it comes to the new age of the advertising industry and trying to gain employment in the field of communication. My question is, at what point should you begin the transition to having a more serious facebook page or twitter or even instagram? I try not to post any humiliating or incriminating photos on my social media, but i do have friends that will post funny articles or make absurd comments on my pictures. Does having a "fun" profile put you at more of a risk when looking for employment?

Student

I agree that it is important to know your metrics and add value so you do not send out too many ads that have no substance and are lost in the clutter. Targeting is also becoming more prevalent as sites like Facebook gather user data that can enable advertisers to find consumers most likely to engage with their brand or product. Do you have any tips or recommended media on how to increase authenticity online?

Student

I really enjoyed this articles insight because of its mention of demonstrating your passion for an industry through LinkedIn. Regardless of what industry may interest you, your passion for an issue or type of work is what sets you a part from the competition. Diving in and demonstrating that passion is a great tip and makes this article very worthwhile in my opinion.

Student

My brand has recently significantly decreased its traditional advertitsing and increased its advertising through digital and social media. I am curious to know how much the traditional advertising as decresed in the last few years overall.

Student

I know of many people who have deleted all of their social media accounts just because they don't use them or have no interested. I think that this might be a good idea for personal reasons, but as far as being professional I think you should have at least Facebook and LinkedIn so that you can be searched upon, even if you don't post anything on them but checking your messages once in a while on either of them would be a good career move.

Student

You mentioned that companies should avoid pushing out too many ads. If a company overadvertises, I know their audience might ignore their ads, but will they look more negatively on the company if they are annoyed with pop-ups at every site they go to? Does overadvertising hurt more than the companies budget, does it affect the customer's view about the company as a whole?

Student

My question for this week, is how do television broadcasting's use search engine marketing differently then a company that provides a specific product or service?Entertainment I have found is a bit more difficult to make marketing decisions then a specific product.

Student

Social media is obviously a very important platform for brands to increase their customer relationship. Most brands are using at least one form of social media to increase their awareness. The one major exception is Apple. They do not have official profiles on any social media sites I was wondering what could be their possible reasoning for this?

Student

I agree with your point that it is a bad professional move to delete all of your social media accounts, but how does someone who simply does not wish to partake in most, if not all forms of social media, still have a decent enough social media presence to help them professionally?

Student

I agree with your statement about deleting social media accounts being a bad move professionally. My question has to do with creating a good balance between showcasing your social life as well as professional life through social media. Throughout my college career, I have heard professionals and my peers talking about making sure to be careful of what is posted online. I have however heard a difference of opinions between posting social events on social media. Some say not to include pictures of parties because employers will not take you as seriously. The differing opinion that I've been told is that employers sometimes do like to see these pictures because they are looking for someone who also has a nice social life. My question for you is: What do you think is a good way to balance social media profiles so that employers will be interested in you? What do you think about this debate?
