Yesterday, Twitter -- the now ubiquitous social network -- filed its IPO to become a publicly-traded company.
As part of this filing, Twitter had to release information for the first time on how many people use the service (215 million users) and how much money it is making... or rather, losing (net losses of $79 million in 2012 and losses so far this year of $69 million).
Also revealed (but not a tremendous surprise): most of Twitter's revenue comes from selling online advertising:
Twitter only formally started selling ads in April 2010, about six months after Costolo joined the company, originally as chief operating officer. But those were basically tests, and Twitter only generated $7.3 million in ad revenue that year. The next year, that number leapt to $77.7 million, and last year Twitter’s ad salesforce generated $269.4 million. This year, the company may come close to doubling last year’s number: In the first half of 2013, Twitter sold more than $221 million worth of ads.
Have you seen promoted tweets on Twitter? What do you think of them? Given what you know about Twitter and other social networks, what do you think Twitter's long-term prospects are compared to Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+?
Comments & Feedback
I've used twitter for roughly three years and over the past year I have started to notice the promoted tweets in my twitter feed. I find that these promoted tweets are less invasive and annoying than Facebook advertisements because they are spread sporadically through out my feed. Over the course of 24 hours there are hundreds of tweets that flow through my feed, I can't even keep up, and I am able to easily scroll past tweets that don't interest me. With that said, there have been a few instances where I see a promoted tweet and in turn I follow that company. Though this is rare, I think this proves that advertising on Twitter is effective in creating brand awareness if nothing else. I think Twitter has a very bright future compared to Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+. Personally, I use twitter as a platform to share my own thoughts and opinions as well as keeping up with news. Twitter has the ability to combine a very personal and creative outlet, while also providing an insant update of current events and news - in a quick and concise way. I think these characteristics make Twitter unique and very valuable, and I hope it continues to grow and remain relevant for a long time.
Promoted tweets on Twitter are something I see everyday. It's very common thing and I really don't mind it. They are normally related to famous athletes or organizations I follow and normally include something that I am generally interested in, so sometimes I don't realize till later it was a promoted tweet. Facebook and LinkedIn are built to last, they have good foundations on what their purpose is, but I believe their is a place in the future for Twitter to last. It is a unique way for people to express their opinions that can be found by everyone through the use of hashtags and search, and the importance of celebrity status has grown so much that people soley get Twitter to follow stars. It is a great source for news and place to express opinions, but they will have to keep updating to keep their share in the market.
I have definitely seen promoted tweets on Twitter. They don't bother me, nor do I get much out of them. I have noticed in my feed that they are usually promoting movies that are coming out to theatres or new mobile phone news. I understand the point of these promoted tweets and that companies are trying to get their news out there by paying for these promoted tweets. I have only found myself really paying attention to these promoted tweets and actually following someone new because of them a couple times. Most of the time I just skim right over them because I know I don't follow them, therefore I am not really intersted in the tweet.
I believe that Twitter has a bright future ahead of them. Twitter is still a fairly new social media site to most people and it still raises curiousity. I know multiple people who are starting to prefer Twitter over Facebook and use it more often. I think a lot of the appeal of Twitter is that it is more to the point then Facebook. You don't have to have albums of pictures and worry about posting messages to other people's walls on Twitter like you do on Facebook. There is a technique to managing a good Twitter account with the use of hashtags which makes it seem a little more complicated then Facebook or LinkedIn. But I also think those aspects are what make Twitter intriguing and I don't see it losing it's appeal anytime soon.
I've definitely gotten the promoted tweets on Twitter. Usually it's something like one or two a day though, so over the course of 24 hours, my regular feed takes up the majority of what I see. So to me they aren't annoying or anything like that. As for their long term success, I think Twitter can hang with the likes of Facebook and other social media. Isn't it the second largest behind Facebook anyways? Until something comes along that is better than Twitter, I don't see it going away anytime soon.
It is very interesting to see the feedback and success when companies based in social media open up to becoming a publicly traded company. Since twitter is primarily used on a mobile device, it poses a difficult situation for them to create ad space to earn money off of. Promoted tweets being their outlet for ad space I think is a brilliant idea- as long as it is kept at a minimum. I follow around 400 people on twitter, and still when I see an unfamiliar tweet I take a second glance on it wondering how it came up on my feed, these are usually twitter's promoted tweets. I can honestly say I have followed five companies solely because of them coming on my feed as a promoted tweet and gaining interest from them this way... But this does not mean I go out and buy their products just because I follow them. I think it would be wise of twitter to start using more analytics for their promoted tweets, for example, if a clothing store that only sold inventory to women ages 16-27 was having a huge sale, twitter could promote this tweet to this demographic, instead of wasting time and clogging up feeds of those who would never consider purchasing from this sale. Another interesting thing twitter does on its own that they could make profit off of is under "suggested people to follow" they look at who you follow and who is similar to those people and suggest them to you, if they only looked at companies you are interested in and started suggesting other companies based on that they could maybe start to build a profit off of charging people to get higher up on their suggested list.
The Twitter IPO is very exciting for investors. Since the balance sheet just recently came out, not many analysts have estimates for the companys potential — many throwing out rough estimates of $20-30 per share. While Facebook is much larger, their IPO was a disaster. Ever since it's IOP, Facebook been a joke to hold shares in — until recently. Facebook has figured out mobile revenue, and stockholders are very pleased now. I've only used Twitter regularly since March of this year. I have not seen as many ads on Twitter as I have on Facebook, or noticed them at least.
The initial day most IPOs are up big, but I feel Twitter will follow the same path as Facebook. Everyone will want it right away because of the recent performance of Facebook. Then, because it is not Facebook, will dip just before it starts to take off again.
I am a relatively new user of twitter. But I have found that it is a surprisingly addictive app to use. Promotional tweets on Twitter have been popping up more and more (maybe I’m just on the lookout for them?).
Tweets are limited to a certain amount of characters making promoted tweets not as annoying than a normal promoted advertisement on other social media. With that said, all social media use promotional advertising. Because all of the online mediums are using it these kinds of ads, I personally believe this is good for twitter. If users are less annoyed with twitter’s ads, then the users will be happy.
Long-term, I think twitter will continue selling’s their promotional ad space, and begin making money opposed from losing it. Twitter is also becoming more popular and continuing in growing in users, while other (older) social networks users are losing long time users, and gaining newer users.
Filing an IPO is very nerve racking for any company. Since Facebook filed and found that they didn't have as much success as they had originally planned, it makes me wonder what will happen with Twitter. Personally, I believe Twitter has much greater potential and serves as a much more important base for connecting people and businesses than Facebook does. Advertisements on Facebook resemble spam much more than promoted Tweets do and that is a major factor in the success of each.
This is the age where all websites have advertising and promotions located somewhere on the page. This is also the case for twitter. Being a twitter user for a couple years now, with in the past two years I have seen more and more advertisements promoted throughout the site. Promoting on websites has become the normal expectation when starting up an online service or product. This is how the company makes their money and stays in business. Yes, promotions are a great thing, they introduce the consumer to many new and different products, but on the contrary advertisements can be annoying and frustrating. It did not come surprising to me when I heard and saw that twitter started allowing promotional actives.
The advertisements that are
placed on social media sites like twitter do not even interest me. I’ve never
actually clicked on a product or service that was being listed on the side
panel of the site. If an advertisement on twitter caught my attention enough, I
would most definitely click on it and see what it was about, but no
advertisement has caught my eye that much.
I believe that the lively hood of twitter will be around just as long as facebook, instagram, and other social media websites like it. Social media outlets provide their customers with a sense of relaxation, and freedom. People enjoy looking at twitter because of the rewarding effect it gives them. I do not believe that promotional tweets will stop users of twitter because their consumers will learn to adapt and change.
Being an avid Twitter user, I've become accustomed to noticing the promoted tweets on my news feed. I think that when Twitter did not have the promoted tweets it was lacking something that Facebook and LinkedIn had already established. Opening up the advertising spot also allowed companies to be more involved with Twitter, when trying to get their brand name out to the 'Twitter World.' I think that Twitter will get a lot of short-term brands to start out with (maybe even a significant amount of small businesses) because the promoted tweets are such a new idea. However, I think businesses that have a very established brand awareness already, like Verizon, AT&T or Wal-Mart, will be long-term prospects for Twitter. I think that the advertisers on Facebook will start participating in the promoted tweets, because Twitter seems to be the new booming social network, as depicted by their new IPO filing.
Personally I was always hesitant on getting a Twitter, however, over the last year I have change my mindset. Now, recently I have been subscribed to the Wall Street Journal and have been following the whole Twitter IPO story. I think they as a company were very strategic and smart about the IPO. They had seen previous companies like Facebook and Linkedin suffer some backlashes and they knew that if they played the right hand they could have a very good edge in the future and use the IPO as a launching point for their company. What I had found interesting is before this IPO came out they were still considered a small busines due to not breaking a certain amount of money on an annual basis. That being said, I think they made the right move by announcing earlier in the year that they would become public, however, by staying silent on the whole matter they gained a lot of added interest within the business community and they really propelled them into the right position before eventually becoming public.
I think this will be very good for Twitter. They will make a lot more money and people will be able to invest in the new up and coming social network that a lot of people are beginning to use over Facebook. I see promotions on twitter once and a while but they are never intrusive or annoying like the ones on Facebook. Sometimes the promotions on facebook are helpful as well, like telling you about a new flavor of candy, or a new movie that will be in theaters this weekend. Twitter will be long term because they provide fast short ideas, in real time, and you can hear what people have to say by following them. It always allows you to search information that you want by using hash tags that act like categories and allow you to see various opinions.
I have seen promotions on twitter, I think it has become the norm to put promotions up on all social networking sites not just Twitter. Its just another way to make a name for yourself or your company. Promotions are a great thing, yes, they may be annoying at times but all in all you can find just about anything your looking for on twitter. If you follow what interest's you, you will see promotions of the specific things you enjoy which i believe is helpful and sometimes good.
As for Twitter's long-term goal compared to Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+, it seems, Twitter is always going to have an edge in my mind. I only say this because Twitter is short and sweet. You can't post a wordy informational promotion or give us a million reasons to why you should use a product. No, its always going to be a promotion that has a link, or a short catchy phrase that people see and then connect with. To me Prospects on Twitter will never end because of the fact that people love information that is quick and to the point.
Everything about this article surprised me; I thought the number of users would be higher, I thought it would be profiting rather than losing money, and I am suprised it makes that much money from ads and promoting. All of this might surprise me because I am not an avid Twitter user, so I do not know how big or great Twitter really is. Twitter came out with the 'promote' Tweet option which helps Twitter profit as well as helps the user reach both current and potential followers that are targeted through the promotion. Twitter can also be a great marketing tool for businesses or individuals. In the Twitter Business website, you can search through how to optimize your account to market to certain segments. Twitter analytics can show you how exactly your business or marketing tactics are working by showing you engagement on your page, customer reactions, etc.
Given what I know about Twitter and other socil networks, I believe that Twitter will be around for a while longer but it needs to update a couple aspects that might be a nuisance in the future. First, whenever someone posts a picture or video, you have to click on the tweet in order to open it. I think this would be much easier to view if it was shown and the user did not have to click on the picture in order to view it. Second, I think it would be nice to have different home feeds. It would be nice to be able to categorize which feed that people would be in; friends, family, business, celebrities, etc. It will be interesting to see where Twitter and all other social media will be in five to ten years. Technology is changing so quickly that all social media needs to be sure to stay on top of those changes.
Since I am not using Twitter, I may now know how it really works, but I am going to add some comments about what I have known so far. I only use facebook. it might be the same whether you Twitter or not, promotion in social media makes me annoyed because it bothers me so much! And sometimes I can obtain some coupons, but I barely use them for my next purchase. well,, I guess some might agree with me in this point. right?
Although I am somewhat new to Twitter, I have still seen a promoted tweet here and there. Generally my reaction has been just to skip over these. Honestly I havn't read a single one yet. I guess I'm still used to the method of, if I'm interested in something, I will go out and find the ad or information on whatever it is that I'm looking for as opposed to the ad being spoon fed to me through social media. I understand that this is a new and innovative way to reach potetnial customers, but I also feel as if it is too forced. Nobody wants to be burdened with information that they weren't seeking out for in the first place, and i feel as if this could be a turn off eventually to the consumer. Long-term, given what I know, I feel Twitter will be more successful than stated above here in this article. Ads will continue to grow as the number of people and popularity of the site grow as well.
Twitter has become an industral giant because it use its own public real-time data stream rather than pulling data from a rang of sources which are used by its competitors, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and the like. Based on my personal experience of Twitter, I think that twitter is not like Facebook, it fouces on public instead of privacy which shares something among friends. Probably, the reason why Facebook is more popular than Twitter is that there are more celebrities, fashionable brands and some things like that have accounts in Facebook. They use their account to interact with their clients to get some advices. Meanwhiles, some political people interacts by Twitter. I think Twitter can maintain its date sources priority and plans to go public.
I have seen promoted tweets on Twitter, and unfortunately they always aggravate me. I feel that, if I was interested in what a company or brand had to say, I would follow them on my own accord. Having their content forced onto my Twitter feed only makes me want to look at them less. I know that probably sounds ironic coming from an advertising major, but I think with social media it is important to interact with followers who are interested in you, not drive them away because you’re being irritating. I think Twitter has a chance to succeed after going public as long as they continue to be innovative and don’t push advertisements on their sites excessively.
From time to time on my twitter feed i do see that one little annoying advertisement tweet saying such and such and promoted by such and such. In my years of being on twitter I have never clicked on one or been interested in any of the ads I have come across. I really am just not a fan of online advertising, it just ads to the hassle and makes you wait so i dont really feel compelled to buy anything i see advertised. But with those net loss figures I wonder what will happen in the coming future with Twitter considering some of social media websites are producing billions of dollars a year in revenue, but with the number of users so drastically differant i guess its anyones game
Twitter sets it's objective a little different than Facebook, LinkedIn and/or Google Plus. Indeed, they are all competitors and share similiarities, which stimulate all of them differentiate themselves from others. I haven't saw the tweet about Twitter's IPO on Twitter but I knew this action long before it led out. I am not a frequent Twitter user but more adhere to Facebook. Since I am a Taiwanese, I will talk about the social networking phenomemon in Taiwan. Facebook is always the king in Asia, follow up by Twitter. LinkedIn and Google Plus have market but fall behind Facebook and Twitter. To analyze the prospect of Twitter, I think it should set clear objective on how to compete with Facebook in Asia market, where is an increasing market for both of them. The first reason I think Facebook runs better than Twitter in Taiwan is because Facebook has more existed users. It is a way to connect people, so people will create an account when they needs to access to someone who has an existed account. To maintain the current user to promote them to attract people they knew to join the network is also the goal. Twitter did improve a lot while the time is passing by, it increase the times promoted and/sponsored tweet. This exposure information to audience more than before since the users are increasing but it only exposure to someone who are willinging to read through it and/or someone has a twitter account. It failed on the ability to attract new audience since more Facebook fan exist in Asia than Twitter owns. The long-term prospect of Twitter, compare to Facebook, I think is to extend the user circle by differentiate itself, for example, publish more user-friendly options, more ideas on how to tweet, etc.
It's only natural that Twitter turned to selling advertisements (especially since they are still losing revenue even with them-- I was surprised!) as popularity grew. I think it's crucial for social networks to first build their "cool-factor," and show what the network is all about before encorporating advertising-- they need to focus on selling themselves before selling anyone else. Once the network reaches a certain popularity, however, encorporating brands and advertising is crucial. We've seen it on Facebook and Twitter, and now Instagram and Tumblr.
Coming for an advertising and a consumer point-of-view, I don't think promoted tweets are bad or distracting. They are "native" looking, and often are related to either people you follow or your friends follow. That being said, I'm not sure how effective they are! I follow so many people that I often skim people I actively follow, and ads are often skimmed over even more frequently.
As a social network, I think they still have a good while to go before fizzling out. I'm interested to see how they do as a publicly-traded company!
I have seen the promoted tweets on Twitter and find them to be more annoying than helpful. Every once in a while there is a promoted tweet that sparks some interest and is informational, but most of the time it is aggravating. I understand that ads and promoted tweets are how these social media vehicles are free for use.
I have seen the promoted tweets on Twitter and they only confuse me. As I'm reading through my timeline and I come to one of those tweets, I start to read it but when I figure out what it is I stop reading. In general, I think the idea of these promotion tweets is good and I'm sure many people do read them. I sometimes will read them if they interest me but that rarely happens.
When looking at Twitter and the longevity of Twitter, I think it has more of a chance then other social networking sites. There are always new sites being created and taking over the old ones. People move on. Just look at MySpace, you never hear about MySpace anymore, they all use Facebook or Twitter. I think that Twitter has more of chance, because even after years it is still very popular. I do think eventually that it will fade when the next big social networking site will pop up. There will always be people on Twitter and Facebook, it just wont be as popular. I predict that Twitter still has a while before that happens though.
I actually did not pay attention to twitter so much and I did not notice they have a advertising on twitter until I see your post.
They wold be better to promote their advertising just like Facebook or any other social websites.
They should have better idea to catch people's attention that way they can at least skim that is actually helpful to get more of their advertising revenue.
I have seen these promoted tweets before, and they are somewhat annoying. Usually I am confused for a brief moment after reading it and I wonder why it is on my feed. However, they are not annoying to the point where I think about using Twitter less. They are also somewhat rare on my feed compared to ads on other social media sites. Facebook ads are 1,000 times more annoying because they seem to pop up everywhere almost every minute. Promoted tweets are much less of a nuisance to me because I just don't see them that often. Long-term, I think that these ads have the potential to hurt Twitter's popularity, but I don't expect it to dramatically alter the fate of the site. If Twitter is losing money at the rate described above however, they may begin to make ads a much more prominent aspect of the feed. If that happens, I would be annoyed and consider using my Twitter less. But as of now, I do not see promoted tweets as a problem for Twitter in the long run.
When I first made my Twitter account in 2011 I never saw that many promoted tweets throughout my timeline or on the Explore page. Now that social media is becoming more popular and many companies are starting to open up to the social media networking sites, you see more promoted tweets on your timeline. I think it's a good use of Marketing your brand because Twitter is one of the most popular social networking sites that people use on an everyday basis. I think Twitter will outrun the other social media sites because it is more popular and it's a simple tool that everyone understands. I can also understand why people would get sick of seeing promoted tweets on their timeline because they take up uneccessary space while you're trying to read the tweets you are interested in but I feel as if we are growing older we should start to appreciate these more because someday we may have to promote our brands or companies through social media.
With the popularity of Twitter being what it is, it is a lot more common to see promoted tweets than it was when I first made my Twitter in 2009. I would say that when I check my Twitter, usually a couple times a day, I will find one promoted or sponsored tweet in my timeline. Usually I read what is being promoted and then continue scrolling through my feed to see what people are up to. I have never been motivated to click on the tweet or do anything other than read the brief blurb the tweet entails and move on. Since Twitter is easy to navigate and scroll through, I don't think these promoted ads are bothersome at all. It is small, you only know its promoted because of the "promoting" identifier. Compared to Facebook, I find the promoted tweets are a lot less annoying. I have also noticed sponsored tweets by celebrities. I can see this being an even better tool than using a promoted tweet because of the large amount of followers most celebrities have, and because of the "power" associated with they have to say. I think Twitter will have the same life-span and prospects as all the other social media networks. Something new always comes along, and someday we will be saying, "remember when I had that Twitter account?"
I have seen the promoted tweets and I don't mind them. I’m pretty rational in understanding that Twitter provides a service and ads produce a considerable amount of the companies revenue. The promoted tweets are quite easy to ignore and are much less annoying than promoted ads on Facebook. For this reason I think Twitter has a bright feature as a social media site. I think sites like Facebook are starting to get a bad reputation for various personal security concerns, changes to the interface, and annoying paid for ads. Twitter seems to have avoided most of these problems so far, which should help the company going forward.
Being somewhat of a Social Media Hermit, my access and interaction with Twitter has been fairly limited. However, I HAVE been seeing these promotions, and I have to tell you- they're kind of annoying (and I'm hardly ever checking my twitter!). They're kind of clogging up the other posts. Literally they're littering Twitter. However, it's a good marketing device, since I HAVE to look at the promotion to see previous tweets. I simply can't get around it. Other sites (which oddly i favor more) i can scroll around them, exit out of them, and it's simply easier to ignore them. Promotions on Twitter are certainly the way to go since you can avoid them. That being said, the best way to destory a social media is to CLUTTER it up with ads and promotions. Thats the nice thing about facebook- i can get away from all that if it's really distracting me. All of these promotions, if they aren't kept somewhat under control, will ruin twitter's popularity.
Having seen these promotions on Twitter, I can see how they may seem annoying to some users. I am not active on Twitter as many are, and don't see these promoted tweets to often. Compared to other social media networks taht do use promotions, the ones on Twitter can be the most distracting. Seeing as on Twitter you must scroll down to read new tweets you will have no choice but to at least look at the ad. On other sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+ it is easier to ignore the ads on the side bars. This can be a pro for many companies though because then that forces the company's audience to view their ad and thus it gets more foot trafic. This type of promotion is good for Twitter though, and for those who promote within it.
I personally like the promoted tweets on Twitter. It gets me to research different brands, TV shows, news stories, and companies. Althought the promoted tweet doesn't always pertain to me or my lifestyle, it's interesting to see what's popular right now or what companies are utilizing Twitter for advertising. Some days it seems like there are more promoted tweets then the day before and honestly I do read right over some of them. That's the problem with a lot of advertising these days. We're in a hurry to skim through our feed and see what our friends are up to and don't even bother searching the promoted tweets or hashtags. But taking advantage of these resources can lead to so many new websites, articles, and people. I think it's a great way to interconnect people to new ideas or products. I think Twitter will continue to rise in popularity, as long as they change some things around and stop losing so much money!
I have seen promoted tweets on twitter before and I've often found them confusing, intrusive, and uninteresting. The obttom line is that no one likes ads. If we could watch every TV show on Netflix, we probably would. With all the new ad blocker technology out there companies like facebook and twitter needed new ways to infiltrate our space with ads, thus introducing the promoted tweets.
I see twitter lasting just about as long as facebook does. Twitter imo will never pass facebook in users or revenues. I've actually never really understood the point of ANY other social media site besides Facebook. Think about this:
- Twitter is for Status updates
- Instagram is for pictures
- Vine for videos
- Pinterest for interesting ideas
- Blogger for long posts
- The list goes on
What I don't understand about all these sites is that facebook can do ALL OF THE ABOVE! Why do we use so many different sites, when facebook can do it all already? I do think Facebook is losing popularity, but it's just becuase it's getting old. The same thing happened to Myspace. Eventually there will be a new site like facebook that looks different, but operates exactly the same way. It's the social media lifecycle. I'll be interested to see future developments on their progress as a publically traded company.
I have seen and do see promoted tweets on Twitter every now and then. At first they confused me because I knew I did not follow that company and it wasn't retweeted by anyone I follow. I actually don't pay attention to them and usually scroll right over them, but if they do catch my eye I skim what it is advertising. I did not realize that Twitter loses that much money, maybe they need a new strategy for advertising. I think that Twitter has become more popular that Facebook especially in our generation, but if the company does not make some changes to start saving more money, it will go down the drain within the next 5-7 years or sooner I believe.
I have seen these ads on twitter. I am not sure if the frequency of them differs for each day, but I have noticed that some days they seem to pop up more than others. It doesn't really bother me because ignoring them is just like ignoring any other tweet. I do think that twitter should do something about narrowing down the interests of each tweeter to more affectively advertise to each person, based on what they are tweeting and maybe even asking more questions when making a twitter, such as age and gender. I think that twitter is definitely here to stay and will become the most prominent social networking site. Even within the past couple of years twitter has become more and more popular and will continue to do so.
I have seen promoted tweets on Twitter. Most of the time, they do not relate to me in the slightest. They don't bother me at all considering it usually happens only once a day if that. I have noticed that recently General Electric has been showing up on my feed most frequently, which has no effect on me. I think Twitter should pay more attention to keywords that users are tweeting to promote specific brands more effectively. I think Twitter will do just fine among other social networks and will become the most popular site. I don't think there will ever be a site to take over Twitter.
I have seen promoted tweets on twitter and personally, I don't mind them. I only see them a couple times a day and they are generally promoting something that interests me. I think that Twitter should use paid advertistments because Twitter needs to be able to make money to stay on the web. I think Twitter will stay around for a while, but eventually will be replaced by something new. Just as Twitter has stolen some of Facebook's users, some new social media website will steal Twitters users someday.
I have been exposed to sponsored tweets on Twitter and have not been overly offended by them. So far. Since I am relatively new to Twitter, I have not established my “personality” on the service just yet, so some of the promoted tweets don’t necessarily apply to my interests. But I am guessing that will change with time and use. Based on my knowledge of other social networks and the information presented in the linked articles, Twitter has room for growth, especially as it relates to mobile use. Unlike Facebook, Twitter seems to be in a position to develop its mobile presence providing greater value to potential investors.
I see at least two or three promoted tweets a day on Twitter. I personally like seeing them because they are usually things that interest me that I didn't know about. Most of the promoted tweets are relevant to my interests or my life. I find myself clicking on the promoted tweets and checking out the Twitter page of the tweet. I feel like Twitter is currently the most popular social network therefore advertising with Twitter would be the best spent money.
I can see the promoted tweets on Twitter very often, and I think the online advertising is becoming an indispensable part in the social media system. We can see the promotion activities everywhere, like TV, magazine, news papar, website and so on. At the beginning, I really hate these ads, because they sometimes bounced out to disturb my work so that makes me annoyed, I know that some people have the same feeling with me. In recent years, the advertisements are more popular in the society, and people start to accept and collect some promotion coupons from the ads. It can not only help people to save more money, but also improve the position in customers' minds.
Personally, I think promoted tweets are more in my way than anything. With that being said I know many individuals who feel the opposite. From a business standpoint however, Twitter provides innumerable ways to connect with customers and prospects giving marketers the opportunity to promote their brands successfully and utilize a variety of paid advertising options available on this platform. Twitter offers products for users which helps users express themselves and create, distribute, and discover content. Twitter makes it extremely easy to connect with consumers. For example, if you had a bad customer experience at Target voicing your opinion on their page businesses are able to respond appropriately and in a timely manner. Advertisers are now able to promote their brands, products and services, amplify their visibility and reach, and extend the conversation around their advertising message. Having worked with a marketing firm who strongly urged their clients to use Twitter in their brand's digital marketing strategy I've seen first hands brands that engage on Twitter have had positive results. With that being said I think long-term Twitter is here to stay. Tweets give additional content that helps to add context and other access points for people to engage with the brand after they engage with any Promoted Tweet. I think brands should put links to their websites, where you can accurately measure incoming traffic and the results from tweets.
Since the promoted ads started on Twitter, I have been annoyed by their presence. It is not so much that the ads are intrusive or over-bearing but I've noticed that they don't reflect any of my preferences. I see them as more in the way then anything else. After reading this information however I do feel bad for Twitter. Being one of the most popular websites while operating at a loss at the same time must be frustrating and I can see why the media giant is trying to different methods to turn a profit. Unfortunately I cannot see any other way for Twitter to get past this without changing its layout completely and making ads on the side or attempting to integrate much more extensive promoted tweets. The business model they have now is just not as successful as it could be and will have a tough time competing with facebook, linkedin, and google+.
I have seen promoted tweets and I have to say I am not a fan. They always get under my skin because I feel that Twitter is such a "choice" form of media. You choose who to folllow and they can choose to follow you back. I didn't choose these promoted tweets and yet they are at the top of my news feed...I tend to ignore them. On the flip side, I am absolutely drawn to good customer service on Twitter. Just this week I tweeted about coffee CCing Keurig. Not only did Keurig respond but so did Lipton Tea, asking if I've tried their tea k cups and then asking if I would like a free sample. Now that's customer service. I've been on Twitter since 2008 and considering what I know about social networks I think Twitter is here to stay. It's interesting to see that the younger generation has actually taken to Twitter more than Facebook. My nephew is fifteen and strictly tweets (along with all his friends). He is not the only fifteen year old I know who prefers Twitter to Facebook. With that in mind, I think all these younger users will continute to use Twitter as they grow up. That plus the fact that it has filled it's IPO to become a publicly-traded compny equals: Twitter is here to stay.
I see promoted tweets on Twitter very often, and I think it is also a kind of “native advertising” as well. For this kind of promoted content, they are playing the role of advertising under the cover of the uniform format of website. Just like Facebook and twitter, recently Pinterest also announced it will add promoted content: promoted pins. We could definitely understand that why all kinds of social media we use always associated with advertising, and it is the mutual benefits behind this cooperation. For me, even though Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, and Twitter all have their different characteristics, this kind promoted content seems like works better in all of them than others kind of advertising because it doesn’t obtrude users.
I often saw promoted tweets on Twitter and I don't quite dislike them. Some of them may also be helpful to me because they fit my interest. If I am not interested in them, I can just scroll down screen and ignore them. However I found ads on Facebook are more annoying since there are too many of them, and some shopping website can be logged in with Facebook. If you purchased things on that website, your friends on Facebook will see them. This is not a bad promotion but just make me feel my privacy is not being protected. Comparing with Facebook, Twitter may win more Asian users since it is extremely popular in Japan. The reason is Twitter concerns more on privacy and keeping a low profile, which is totally opposite to Facebook. As an asian, I think this will be a superiority of Twitter.
I'm a fan of the promoted tweets and hashtags on Twitter. Some of them are helpful when it comes to filtering information and finding more out about a topic that interest you. The most successful promoted tweets I believe usually have the most clever hashtags. This way people will interact with the promotion and try to use the hashtag in their own unique way. They also do not overwhelm your Twitter feed with them so it hasn't become annoying to most, its just something you look at and if its eye catching you click, and if its not you just keep scrolling. I see why Twitter has promoted tweets, because they obviously need to make money, but I just hope they do not overload them in the future and ruin what I really use the site for.
I rarely tweet and in most cases when I dos so, it is simply
because as someone majoring in communication, I must be in a position to know
most of the highly used social networks. Otherwise I am yet to really see the
personal benefits of twitter. I was surprised to hear of sponsored tweets on
twitter, because it’s something that I had never paid attention to, so I heard
to check to see if it does exist. I saw
some, one of them which was a LAYS tweet: The
perfectly crispy chip that has been America’s favorite snack for 75 years. So
the promoted tweets exist I see. Like any
other social network, I think it’s good for twitter to have these promoted
tweets for them to generate revenue. However, I am not sure if the promoted
tweets are effective. In my country very few people use twitter, and it’s
regarded as an elitist social network.
As a result people often use Facebook and Twitter and promoted messages
on these sites likely to have a better impact.
A few hours before this homework post, a friend of mine had just posted a
view that I concurred with on Facebook: Honestly speaking am thinking of just deleting my tweeter account. I don’t
see the fun at all. Now I just ask myself why did I in the first place opened a
tweeter account, it’s just a boring social cite, nothing interesting and it’s
just nothing. In light of this view, I think twitter must devise more
ways to make it more socially interactive so as to gain more users and avoid
losing the already existing ones, otherwise twitter subscriber numbers may
remain far behind that of Facebook. Once
they boost the subscribers, may be they can generate more revenue from the
promoted tweets.
I see promoted tweets on Twitter quite often. They don't bother me though like they bother other people. I actually like them because they sometimes promote things on my feed that I normally wouldn't think to follow on twitter. And if i don't like what they are promoting, who cares? It takes up a whole half inch of my screen and I can easily scroll past it. I think it's good that twitter is promoting tweets to gain more money. It's a smart move. As long as they dont change the format of Twitter every other month like Facebook does, I think that Twitter has a good shot at continuting to the prefereed type of social media.
It is a very risky thing to go public being a social media company. They need to look at facebook and see what not to do. I have seen promoted tweets on twitter, and I really do not have a strong hate for them at all. I would rather have those then pay to use twitter. I think twitter has a very bright future. They are a different type of network, they are more of a news source than social network. Facebook and Google+ are definitaly used for social netorking, where as LinkedIn is for careers. Twitter is used mainly for getting news out.
Being a part of the generation that was introduced to Twitter in our early years of college, it's kind of crazy to think that it has already become a publically traded company before I even graduated. I always respected Twitter for the fact that they were “ad less” compared to Facebook. I quickly became interested in Twitter for the sole fact that it was a much more simpler version of social media with out all the garbage ads everywhere. I have seen the promoted ads every once and a while on my time line. At first it started out, Twitter would just promote a specific account. This never bothered me at all because it was always alongside all the famous accounts that were suggested for me. In the past year and a half I feel like I have seen more and more promoted accounts’ tweets on my time line. To be honest, none of these really bother me at all either. They happen so few and far between that I forget that Twitter even does this sometimes. Compared to Facebook ads, I will take Twitter’s promoted tweets any day of the week.
