The first day of the New Media Drivers License seminar at Michigan State Unviersity was a blast. As I read through all the Twitter comments and tweets I had to laugh. What an amazing group of individuals in this class. Our largest so far. Thanks too all of you who were there, and looking forward to a great semester.
BTW, I'm interested to hear your Twitter strategy for this semester. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Comments & Feedback
To be honest I did not have a Twitter before this class started. I found it unnecessary because it is just a Facebook status without all the other benefits Facebook has to offer. We are now over a month into the semester and my views on Twitter have not changed. In my opinion, Twitter has not offered me anything extraordinary or worthwhile. Many of my friends do not have Twitters, or they do not use them. I still will tweet every once in a while, but if I ever want my friends to actually get my posts I post to Facebook. Therefore, to answer your question on my Twitter strategy I would say I am posting random tweets throughout the semester so that I am staying on it.
Using Twitter to me resembles being in a loud bar and you need to shout to hear yourself or the person you're talking to. I would like to learn more on how to use Twitter effectively. As of now, I really don't care much for it. I think maybe because I'm not tweeting something useful or interesting to anyone. I hoping this class will show me the way to better understand Twitter and maybe use it more often.
I plan on using twitter to connect to businesses and magazines that are relevant to me and the advertising field. I will also use twitter to look for jobs that I will need upon graduation in May. Also I will use twitter to keep up with class and look for information using the #NMDL sign.
I am new to Twitter but from what I have learned it is a great way to network and build your own network and to brand yourself. It is also an excellent up-to-date information channel that I think everyone can benefit from in some way. In one of my other classes we use Twitter to communicate with the professor and the entire class. No e-mail or anything, just Twitter. I find that many people have the same questions as I do so it is a great way to find answers as well as share information about the class and other events/information. It is also nice because our professor is able to instantly answer our questions or concerns via Twitter through texting.
I agree, Twitter is great way to brand yourself. I will use twitter to keep up with news and to socialize. I'm not all that crazy about it because I like how the other social media sites allow you to comment back to people and develop that sort of relationship. Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to myself. But I will agree it is a great way to put yourself out there and definitely helpful in keeping up with news.
My new Twitter strategy is to not necessarily tweet more but to tweet accurately. I want people to start following me on Twitter because I have something great to offer them. I hope that I am reading enough content from other sources that my tweets are picked up and re-tweeted because I might be presenting new information to someone. I see Twitter as a kind of link between Facebook and LinkedIn. I can put a combination of formal and informal information out there. I definitely have a different group of followers on Twitter than I do anywhere else and I would like to continue that trend.
I created my Twitter account last June, but I have hardly used it since it was made. Because of this, I am not following a significant number of profiles and an even smaller number is following me. I am hoping that NMDL will allow me to expand my knowledge on Twitter, encourage me to tweet multiple times per day and help build my personal brand. Although hashtags and retweeting may be simple concepts to some people, it is going to take some practice for me to learn these Twitter terms. I'm sure I will have a Twitter strategy to share by the end of the semester!
I previously had a twitter that I used only once in a while- admitingly only to receive online coupons. Yet after enrolling in this class, and learning about all twitter has to offer, I'm looking forward to using it once more, not just for online coupons! I'd like to utilize it to follow experts in the field, companies that I admire, and bloggers that I follow to increase my knowledge and understanding of digital public relations.
I've been active on Twitter for almost three years and I think it's safe to say that I understand it pretty well. This semester my strategy is to continue building relationships with area professionals and hopefully find time to take them offline. I've attended a few tweet-ups where I've met some of the people I follow in person, and it's a really cool experience. There is a huge number of PRSSA students on Twitter so I have also connected with many of them online before meeting up at national events.
One thing I'd like to learn more about it how to effectively apply Twitter to a business plan. How do you decide the tone, how to write, what to write, etc? I've managed social media outlets for my last three internships but I've never really had the discussion with my supervisors of how I should be writing Tweets and conversing with customers.
I plan on using twitter as a new way to expand my social media education. it is somethingm I have considered trying in the past but never got around to it. I feel like I could get some great info and feedback from it as well. It's something that I see big companies and organizations using and sending out information that would be very helpful if you know right away. i feel that twitter is something that can assist me in getting that info quick and efficiently
My Twitter strategy is to grow up a little bit. I usually only use Twitter to write about funny moments that come up in my life or inside jokes with my friends; however, I think it's time to get a bit more serious since I am about to have a career hopefully. If I read an interesting news article or learn something new I should tweet about it and see what reactions I get from my followers. In order to attract intelligence, one has to convey intelligence, and I want to attract intelligence.
My strategy for Twitter is pretty simple; Start using it enough to the point that it becomes natural. I have had a personal Twitter account for a long time, but only recently began using it daily. I really want to learn how to use Twitter advantageously for MSU Greenline, for which I am currently managing the account. (Follow us @MSUGreenline!) It's hard trying to figure out how to start using Twitter for a "company," especially for a non-profit, is very intimidating. Hopefully through this course I'll be able to gain some useful knowledge for not only my personal account, but also for the Greenline!
My strategy for using Twitter is definitely going to change throughout this semester. Right now I only use it to connect with friends and celebrities. I will soon be making the switch and use twitter to promote my personal brand. I hope to increase the number of followers that I have because networking is so important in todays world. Twitter is a great social networking site because it is easy to see what everyone is thinking since they are tweeting all the time. I also enjoy the picture feature, it makes twitter more exciting especially when celebrities put up their own personal pics.
My Twitter strategy is to learn the basics, then proceed to utilize it as an effective Communication/Marketing tool. A close friend of mine showed me her account and helped me to get acquainted with the settings. I am not very savvy in the Social Media department, so I am hoping Twitter will help me gain deeper knowledge in the field of Public Relations and the strategies thereof. As I prepare to begin the interview process, I will be able to say that I am managing my own Twitter account. Insight on Social Media outlets is a driving force in today's global society.
I am going to try and use hash tags every time I log onto my Twitter account. I didn't realize how easy it was and how effective it is!
As simple and useful as Twitter is, it is by far my least utilized social media outlet. I still have trouble deciding what I find relevant to post and better yet why someone else would care about what I have to say in only 140 characters. I will make it my goal to not only post more tweets but to find more people on twitter to follow. I think it is because I am not as comfortable using it as other sites such as facebook and lately it has really only served as a source to look for job interships. I have a lot of friends who don't even tweet anything, ever, because they only have it due to a requirement for a class. I don't usually get feedback from anyone when I tweet something and that is part of the reason for me tweeting even less. This class is a source of so much usefull information and I am definitely looking forward to becoming more twitter savy.
My twitter strategy for this semester is to tweet a lot more. However, I do not want to tweet about what I'm doing every second--I actually want to make my tweets relevant, and something that people look forward to reading. I'd like to tweet about fun facts and interesting articles that pertain to the field of what I'm wanting to go into, which in my case is things occurring in the music or sports industry. Not only would this be beneficial to my knowledge of current things going on in the industry, but it would also potentially attract "followers" withIN the industry that could get to know my name. These "followers" could also eventually become people to network with.
@MSUNewMedia I have heard so many good things about this class. I'm excited to learn what social media is all about!!! #NMDL
I'm glad to hear that other students are still a little unsure about Twitter. I originally got one about a year and a half ago for my journalism class at the time, but I never really used it outside of the class. I agree that the hashtags & retweeting gets confusing sometime. There have actually been times when I have thought to myself, "Why don't I get this? Aren't I SUPPOSED to get this?" While I agree that Twitter can do amazing things (my best friend just got an offer on a job that she found posted on Twitter), I also think that it's always been a little "forced" upon us, at least more so than Facebook. My strategy for the semester is to try to not get too frustrated with tweeting and see if anything enlightening comes out of it.
I just recently started using Twitter a few months ago. My friend/roommate always would use it and would always provide information that would not have been know if he wasnt connected with certain people on Twitter. Thats the main reason for me to join the site, to gain useful information and to connect with people that (if it werent for such social media opportunities) I would not have had the chance to connect with. Before I used Twitter, I thought it was just a fancy site that was similar to the Facebook news feed where people just updated what they were doing at the time. ("Just sitting here, watching America's Top Model.") Booorrring...Snooze. I hate that on facebook. No one cares what you're doing! I sure dont..But, as I created an account and got past the Twitter coding, with the use of the @ and # keys, I found it to be a great way of staying on top of things in the world. A great way to, depending on who you follow, find out what your favorite stoner rapper is doing..."Waken...Baken" says Wiz Khalifa every morning...lol
I've had a Twitter account for almost a year now, and my Twitter strategy for the semester is to actually get into the hang of tweeting often. I have an iPhone, which makes tweeting quick & easy. I'm not the type to tweet about what I ate for breakfast - I want my tweets to be something people will actually want to read. I've already started following more professional accounts, like newspapers and businesses I'd like to work for, and I want to engage with them by tweeting @ them more often. I plan to retweet posts that I find particularly interesting, and to increase my total followers.
My Twitter strategy would be to tweet a lot more. So far I have only 67 tweets and have had a Twitter account for over a year. That is pretty pathetic. I was really excited to get a Twitter when I first created it, but once I had it I didn't really see my use for it. Yes, it's fun to tweet photos of where I am and update my status to what is going on, but not everyone cares to hear or see that. I also wanted to keep it professional since I am following a lot of companies I like and hope to work for. So with that being said, I will expand on my strategy and say I want to not only tweet more, but tweet more work related things, like posting articles and stating my opinion on them. I think this is a definite way to use Twitter to my advantage in a professional manner. Twitter works professionally for companies and celebrities as well. It allows them to connect with their fans and users, giving them an opportunity to complain or praise straight to the source. I don't really understand how it can be used to my advantage in a social way. I think FaceBook serves that purpose and does a better job being socially connected than Twitter can. I hope to learn how to tweet professionally and socially through this class and learn the proper Twitter etiquette since I am not too certain about that too.
My Twitter strategy is to start tweeting more and engage in a chat on Twitter at least once during the semester. I have also never done live tweets so I would like to engage in more of that. I would aslo like to network with more area professionals and make contact with them through venues other than Twitter.
My Twitter strategy for this semester is to learn how to actually use the site which i have had for a year and barley used! So make that, learn how to use the site and actually make it apart of my everyday routine.
My twitter strategy? Well before this class I had only tweeted 3 people in my entire life and I can't say that my tweets had much substance. So right now I would have to say that I don't have a twitter strategy, if anything I guess it would be to learn more about twitter. Using twitter has done little for me in the past but maybe by the end of the semester it will be a valuable tool, we'll see.
My goal for Twitter this semester, and realistically beyond that as well, is to tweet at least once a day. The key to enhancing your online experience and exposure is to constantly get your name out there. It's the only way people will recognize and remember you, right? So I figure if I tweet more often, but not all at once, my followers will think about me more often. I've also read resources that say that Twitter is best for "conversations," so it's good to include other things in your post. Talk to other people, talk about other people, throw out new ideas, include links, share stories. I follow some professional threads and they always have links to interesting articles, and it gets you moving around on the internet. I've been trying to include more links and stories to keep other people's interest. :)
Twitter, at first, seemed like an unoriginal idea. I thought Twitter was just a rip-off of Facebook's Live Feed. The Live Feed was just a constant stream of your friends thoughts, posts, and media uploads. Then Twitter blew up and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and signed up for an account about a year ago. I began following sports analysts and athletes, along with my favorite actors and musicians. It became an addiction and I had the Twitter tab open at all times. It was the fastest way to find out news and about a new song or cd that was released. Today, I still have Twitter open at all times to follow my list of Tweeters. I feel like Twitter will continue to dominant in social media for the foreseeable years to come because of it is simple yet innovative and flashy all at the same time.
I personally think twitter is a bunch of rubbish. It's a broadcast platform desguised as social media. No matter what way you slice it, it is essentially just a bunch of people in a room yelling things out about themselves. Then, you put on a pair of headphones that only allow certain peoples voices to be heard. Add in a bunch of game-mechanic-esque nonsense like hashtags and you have twitter. Its really just facebook updates but without all the extra clutter or ability to comment back and develope a relationship. This relationship is at the core of what social media is about, not just uploading a description of mundane nonsense you are doing at any point of the day.
I really think Twitter became so popular just because it appealed on some fundemental level to celebrities' vanity. Along the way companies realized it was a great way to track "conversation" (or rants) about their brands and that is why it has become somewhat significant in our field. Sorry about it, but I just dont like it.
My strategy for using Twitter is probably going to change throughout the semester. Right now I use it to connect with friends but mostly to get news immediately instead of having to extensively search through news sites for what I'm interested in. I also get my celebrity fix by following comedians, athletes, journalists, actors, etc. and seeing what they're up to and what ideas and organizations have their attention. Some of my goals for the semester are to use hashtags more effectively, actively notice how advertising is incorporated into Twitter and expanding my connections through techniques we learn in this class.
Out of all the social media sites we talked about during our first session, I'm least familiar with Twitter. Therefore, my strategy for using Twitter this semester is - actually do it! I need learn the ins and outs of "tweeting" and I'm thankful for NMDL for giving me the push to read more about using Twitter. I've made it a goal for myself to tweet at LEAST once a day! I'd like to get involved more in the Twitter world by gaining more followers, checking it more regularly, interacting with others, and of course tweeting more often. It's been a long time coming, but I'm ready to become a tweeting machine.
To be honest, before this class I never thought I would want to use Twitter. My strategy was quite simple at first, to figure out how to use Twitter. After experimenting for a little bit I have realized it's not as hard as I thought it was going to be. I plan to continue to learn even more about the benefits of useing Twitter and hope to build the number of people I follow and have following me throughout the next few weeks.
At this point I still do not see the real benefit of Twitter. Maybe it is because I just signed up for it or the fact that I feel like it is just another procrastination mechanism, which is the last thing I need. However, I am curious and willing to give it a shot. I created it about a week ago and can see the thrill of following your favorite celebrities and knowing their every move or who they are "tweeting". Throughout the course of this class I am curious to see how Twitter can impact businesses in a positive light. Personally, I do not understand why people would want to follow ordinary peoples every move like what someone is watching or eating for dinner but maybe this class will get me hooked, I guess we'll see!
My strategy is to first off use it more to share information with others and communicate with them. I sometimes find myself just looking at how other Tweet and this is wonderful but I also need to start using what I have learn and tweet as well. I am very good at communicating via text and Facebook with friends but I think Twitter in general is going to be a new experience for me. I have had it for a few years now but my Tweets are very low and so are the people I follow. I plan to start to follow more people and learn more about things. I think Twitter is a great way to engage with others and this is a tool I should use more often. I definitely plan to tweet more and learn different tactics to promote myself.
I first got a Twitter after listening to Derek speak about it at the marketing resource fair. I always thought that it was annoying and people just used it to get attention. I now realize that there is a lot more to it than what I thought before. After following celebrities and seeing how well and frequently they advertise about new book, movies, albums, etc.,I see how Twitter is a great way to spread the word about something. My Twitter strategy this semester is to tweet to get the word out about things that I think are important. I want to make sure I tweet about groups I am in, events I am attending, good books read, and so on. When I see my friends tweeting at certain things and people I am interested in what they are and want to follow them. I need to get over the fear of feeling stupid about things I am tweeting, because I know there are a lot of people who are tweeting more pointless things than me. I also want to try using hash tags more when tweeting. Since I have an iPhone, it shouldn't be too hard to keep up on Twitter. I just have to make myself tweet!
My Twitter strategy for this semester is firstly--figure out how to work it. I just opened my account last week and haven't quite figures out all of the symbols associated with tagging and RTing. After that, I plan to use it to follow advertising agencies and related things to keep up with the goings-on in the industry. I also would like to follow friends and a few celebrities. My tweets are mainly random thoughts I have throughout the day that I find amusing. And of course I plan to use Twitter for this class to ask questions and see what's happening.
I love how when using Twitter you can follow people without even knowing them, and they love it! It is a funny concept, but in the world of social media is constantly evolving as is my Twitter uses. When I first got Twitter it was because my Professor told me to, and it weirded me out that anyone could see what I posted so it was all private. As I started getting accustomed to the Twitter world, I realized that it wasn't going to be an effective social media tool for me if it was set at private. So for the first time, I had a social media outlet free to the public. It has been a learning experience and actually has helped me evolve my Facebook page to be more open (without giving away to much info).
My strategy for twitter this semester is to be more comfortable using it so that I can maximize all the benefits it has to offer. I had a twitter account before this class but I rarely used it. I always felt like I didn't have anything "tweetworthy" to say. I had professors in class mention there were benefits but I never really knew how to utilize them. After class I realized there is even more potential in it than I originally thought! I am excited to get my drivers license and am confident that I will be a twitter expert by the time I am through.
I also had an abandoned Twitter account that I never used, and am trying to convince myself to stick with it this time. It's so easy to feel on information overload with all of the neverending clutter streaming to us. I didn't want to contribute to all of the noise. With this class, I am learning that it is easy to make what you tweet useful by doing things like adding hashtags. Rather than simply throwing out words into a cyber abyss, I am contributing to a seamless conversation.
I really did not know why people prefer to use this twitter before begining this semester. But after building account and profile, it seems like esaier to communicate with people than other networking. It can express by myself and thought directly and esay to add other people even i dont know him or her. Since this semester, I realize that's why many people become popular this twitter.
I just started using Twitter this week. It has been really great to read everyone else's posts because I feel informed. Whether it's just about the person's life or actual news about what's going on in our world, I feel I have been updated. However I have a really hard time tweeting. I never know what to say. So my goal and strategy for now is to stay on top of it. I want to force myself to tweet multiple times a day so that I gain a level of comfort. Then from there I will try to begin tweeting things that are more useful. I want to eventually tweet information that people actually care about because I think that would help me to increase my followers. This is just my strategy for now, but we'll see where I end up when I am finished with this class...
Before #NMDL I had a Twitter and used it on a semi regular basis. When I first created my Twitter, I was definitely skeptical. I did not quite understand the science behind tweeting and really just used Twitter to follow and receive news about my favorite brands. I find Twitter incredible as a resource for social media. I enjoy being able to pick and choose the articles I want to read by the news sources I follow as well as the simplicity of being able to access articles. As I use Twitter more and more I acquire new information on its uses. I am much more comfortable tweeting now and I think it's a great way to share information with others. There are still a few things I am unsure of on Twitter, but I hope I'll learn through this course.
I am fairly new to Twitter and I need to learn how to use all of the features, but what I do know is that it is the most current source of information/news out there. I don't tweet much, but I follow a lot of people and companies, for example, CNN.com. I love staying current on news around the world and by using Twitter CNN is able to update by the second. Twitter is huge and is still growing. I saw an article the other day saying that Twitter is passing by MySpace with large numbers. The whole concept of Twitter is amazing and I'm excited to learn more about it and start using it!
When twitter first came out I created an account just to see what it was all about, I didn't use it much, in fact I didn't use it at all because I didn't get the point of it. It wasn't until last semester when I started getting really into twitter. My professors were all urging their students to build their personal brand and to get familiar with the various types of social media to better prepare us for the advertising world. I gave it a try after a while and I noticed it was more than just telling people what you're doing or what's on your mind. With twitter, you get many uses out of it for example you can follow personal trainers for great workout and dieting tips, your favorite celebrities to see when their next tour is, companies who you maybe interested in applying to, learn 'omg facts', and so much more.
One interesting fact that a classmate told me last semester which really got me interested in twitter was the fact they were following an advertising company and the company posted a job opening, they applied for the position and got an interview. As you can see, twitter is more than just a place to tell people what's on your mind and what you're doing, it's a place to build networks and it's a great start to building a professional, personal brand which will help you succeed in the advertising world.
This semester I hope to continue building my personal brand with twitter (effective and professionally), and I hope to increase the number of followers that I have because networking is key in the 'real world'. I also hope to get a better grip on understanding the hash tags, and being able to read who is retweeting who (it's hard to understand when so many people are tagged and RT and such)
I have only had Twitter since the start of this semester. At first I wasn't really feeling it, being so used to using Facebook and the hash tags/replys/retweets were confusing concepts to grasp. However, Twitter allows me to put my random opinions out there and read about others in a timely manner. I prefer the 140 characters rule to Facebook because I do not have to waste my time reading a novel that people may have written. I have linked my Foursquare to my Twitter and it allows me to track where my friends are at as well as remind myself the places I have gone and with who. Twitter also is a great place for me to learn about new bands that I am interested in and connect with them on a personal level. In return, I will often tweet music related news for all of my followers to see. Twitter has become my new favorite social media site, however I wish more of my friends were on Twitter like on Facebook.
I have had twitter for almost two years now and I absolutely love it! It's such a great way for people to communicate not only with friends, but their favorite companies. The cool thing about twitter is how personal you can get with company executives. For example, I am obsessed with Biggby Coffee, so I follow Biggby's CEO (@Biggbybob). Multiple times I tweeted him about issues at a local branch, and he always quickly replies with a suggestions. I also enjoy live tweeting. For example, Verizon Wireless tweeted from the iPhone announcement, so I could follow what was happening while in class.
A twitter goal for me is to tweet more significant information. I will be entering the business world soon, so I would like to optimize my twitter account.
Until last semester, I didn't really understand why I should create the Twitter's account, but after following some interesting people, I realized that there is no social networking services which provides information quickly than Twitter. I post my life, information, etc what I want to share and ,with my smartphone, I can post everything I want on Twitter. How isn't it cool? If people know how to click following on Twitter they understand over half of Twitter's system and enjoy it.
I love that we are using twitter to communicate for this class. I mean, I virtually LIVE on twitter. Talking to you and classmates would be so much easier for me since I never check my email. However, I am slightly concerned about my privacy. Unfortunately, you cannot safeguard your twitter like you can your facebook. By this I mean you can't block what people see, who sees it and how they see it. Twitter only protects your tweets from people that you don't follow. I like to express myself no matter how explicit my thoughts may be. Now that the class will have access to my twitter site, I feel the urge to beceome more "professional" as to not cause any problems. Although I think I may just go ahead and make a secondary profile solely for this class. I just hope I won't feel like those kida who are complaining about having to have a twitter. You should try to work out something where we get graded for tweeting. Anyway, I plan on using google to help me figure out my dilemma. Google knows EVERYTHING! Anyway, I plan on putting my photoshop skills to work on my twitter page. I want to design something very creative and eye catching. Anyway I'm going to post some resources for those who feel the same.

My strategy for Twitter is very simple: gain a general understanding and then begin to tweet as much as I update my facebook status. I look forward to gaining the comfort in order to do so, and hopefully gain a following of my peers. It is interesting to see what everyone is tweeting about, and even more fascinating to click and read links others are interested in, view pictures that some want to share, and watch videos that others find important enough to share with the social media world.
YEAH NEW MEDIA DL YEAH!!!! @MSUNewMedia
So far my personal twitter strategy has not worked out for me. I have had a twitter for a while but never really look to post much. At the beginning of this class, my goal was to post more then I ever have before. This was true for my instagram but not for my twitter. There just aren't very many things that I think of that I say to myself "I need to put this on twitter." I see a lot of other tweets and think of how pointless they are and I think I might just not want to sound like them. I am determined to start tweeting more now, and my strategy is go for responsive tweets, tweets that people will want to see and want to respond to. That is my goal at least, hopefully that goal motivates me enough to do so.
