Q: I think for some companies and products, it is unnecessary to have social media platforms. Because it seems like not related to out daily life. In this case, what is the best way to motivate the company and the customers?

I think what you're asking is how do you reach an audience when they aren't using social media. There are lots of ways, which is best will depend on the audience, product and company. There are plenty of effective non-social digital means and you can always fall back to traditional marketing techniques.

For example, my firm works with a law practice that specializes in a very specific legal issue. Social media isn't an effective tactic because people aren't actively talking about this issue. Instead, when someone encounters the legal issue they do a google search looking for a lawyer who can help. They find my client and either contact him or download his information packet in exchange for their e-mail address.

You can always use traditional marketing techniques as well like networking, TV commercials, fliers, cold calling, etc... etc... While not as sexy, traditional marketing can still work.

Q: Referring to this week's lesson on mobile marketing and mobile apps, at what point should a retailer who participates in e-commerce move from just being available on mobile to having their entirely own mobile app? I know stores like Kohl’s and Target have mobile apps aside from being able to access their websites through your smart phone’s search engine. But for smaller retailers, how do you know if creating a mobile app for your business is the right move and necessary?

This is a great question. At this point in time one of the biggest advantages to shopping on a mobile app vs a mobile website is simplified repeat purchases. If you only plan on a single purchase from a retailer then it's more effort to download and install an App than use a mobile website. If you anticipate frequent shopping then an app is a much better experience and worth the download. I would look at what percentage of sales on mobile are repeat, if that number is growing or a significant part of your business then it's probably time to start looking into an app.

Why do brand websites have pop-up email requests? Do they really gain a lot of attention through those?

Unfortunately yes. Like you I am not a fan of the e-mail pop-ups. They are annoying and disrupt an otherwise pleasant user experience... but they work. I wish they didn't, but they do. The difference in percentage of users who opt in to an e-mail popup vs an e-mail form on the page is staggering. E-mail marketing is one of the most effective forms of marketing today so there is incredible value in building a robust e-mail list.

I noticed that with email on phones it is so much easier to delete emails before even reading the subject line. How do you get customers to not delete emails from your company without reading them.

Create a reputation of sending extremely valuable e-mails. Even if a large portion of users are deleting e-mails initially, those who do read the e-mails and find them incredibly valuable will tell others and sooner or later your audience will want to open the e-mail regardless of the subject line.

Do you believe its possible to create a truly great ad without offending anyone? Like is it truly possible to reach your target market and truly relate as well as gain their attention with out someone feeling "excluded" or "offended"?

No. I don't think it's possible to do anything without offending someone. Some people look for reasons to be offended, you could give them a million dollars no strings attached and they'd complain about having to pay taxes on it. More specific to your target market, if you've done a good job really segmenting your audience and understanding your core audience then yes you can create an advertisement that resonates and doesn't offend or exclude. You just have to be very specific about your target audience. The broader your definition of the audience the more likely you'll have outliers that are excluded or offended by your core message.

Is it possible for social media to damage a brand image?

Student

My brand is Lockheed Martin, which is one of the largest military weapons contractors in the world. With this being said, they're not a company using click on ads with landing pages to sell F-16 fighter jets. I think that Lockheed mainly uses digital media to bring about awareness of their company and generate investors of the company, but how do they target their real product customers, such as the Navy, Army, Marines, Airforce, NASA, and Coast Guard? Is Lockheed an example of a company that doesn't really use social media and digital platforms to turn viewers into buyers?

Is is crucial for every company to try and create an app since our generation is becoming more tech savy? Essentially, I am asking if apps really generate a lot of revenue for companies and are that important for brand image.

Student

I never consider Pinterest as an important platform for companies or brands to use...it just seems like it takes a lot of effort to explore a company's Pinterest rather than just check out their Twitter or Instagram. Are there specific niches that a company would fall into where Pinterest is absolutely vital to its success?

Student

Is it beneficial for companies to have a Pinterest board? I understand that Hobby Lobby should have a Pinterest because they are a craft store, which is the main focus of Pinterest. Do you think that every company should have a Pinterest?

What's the next big king? Social, Email, In-app? How is social combatting overloading their users newsfeeds with ad clutter? How can email make a comeback to the forefront of the digital landscape? Are In-app ads the future or just another annoying way for advertisers to get at innocent users?

Student

These days there are so many different social media platforms for companies to use in order to grow their businesses. Do you think its beneficial for compaines to chose what platforms they feel are best suited, and building them well, or is it more worth it to invest more resources into building a strong following on all platforms?

Student

What is the appropriate number a business should contact a customer (through any of the mediums) in a week to make sure the customer doesnt get annoyed with them?

Student

Related to the question about e-mails being so easy to delete on phones without even reading the subject line, so many companies still have spam e-mails sent out even though people constantly complain about them. Do you think these spam e-mails make a difference in attracting customers, or is it more of a pain?

Student

I've seen certified companies on Twitter who openly bash or make fun of another company or rival. Often times they are humorous and the other company will respond with a smart remark or quip. These tweets often gain alot of attention and retweets, but seem like they are rather unprofessional for major companies (Nike, Burger King, etc). When should a company respond to a "diss" tweet or is it better to remain professional and ignore them?

Student

What are some recommendations or advice a company can go about informing their target audience that Pinterest isn't just a social media platform that is about DIY projects, but instead provides content that can be relevant to their brand and ultimately influential to their target audience?

Student

Do you think its necessary to cover all forms of advertising to be a successful brand? Or do you think some methods in particular work better for certain brands where many other methods of advertising can be avoided?

Student

Since we had to work on our pinterest accounts as a part of our exam, I came across a few questions. One of the questions I have regarding pinning is how to find "pins" that are actually helpful rather than just lead you to a random website? Like an actual article that goes into detail rather than something like a "how to"?

Student

Pinterest seems like it's one of the least active of social media outlets, when comparing it with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube. How important do you think it is for a company to create a Pinterest? How often should a company post?

Student

I agree with the above statement of that it is impossible to creat an ad without offending anyone. I think in some way someone will find a way to feel excluded or offended. Do you think companies should try to reach out to those who feel excluded and give surveys after an ad to see what part of their market felt left out?

Student

My company is very focused on helping people market themselves better in the work environment, so I could see the appeal in them starting their own Pinterest because all of their other social media platforms have generally the same information but on Pinterest they would be able to put all of that into one. Do you find that more and more companies are using Pinterest as a social media platform?

Student

It seems that image based social media is on a sharp rise and brands are taking advantage of it. My question is, do you think in terms of identifying with a broad target market made up of both genders which format is best for a brand to generate viewership and brand imaging?

Student

I've used Pinterest before to look at arts and craft type products, but never realized that it was used as a marketing tool, and had valuable information. What businesses would do best if they used used Pinterest for marketing purposes?

Student

Going off of your fourth question, I really like the answer given. I think this is huge for getting emails to matter. I am just like most people, annoyed with getting all sorts of emails that mean nothing. However, there are certain ones that I keep subscribed to because I know they send out good deals and others I enjoy reading(there are not a whole lot of these). But, it is possible to get this to the consumer and have the content actually be important.

Pinterest is a good way to get your name out to many people, but I feel like the target market for Pinterest users is mostly females. What would be a good way to attract a larger target group? (I'm pretty sure this is last weeks blog, but this was still a big question that I had.)

Student

I agree with this questions. My thoughts are maybe show that there isn't just DIY ideas and baking ideas. If there were more manly things(I dont know if there are or not) and they were publicized I am sure more men would use it.

Student

This is my first time working on a Pinterest board and I'm not sure how followers work. It seems like people just create a board and post articles that they find on the web. My question is what makes certain boards more popular than others? It seems as long as you have articles from credible sources, you're good but that doesn't seem to always be the case.

Student

Before this class I never thought I would ever have a Pinterest account, but I have to admit I found some very interesting boards, and found it to be very user friendly and useful. Why does Pinterest have a stigma that only women use it? What do you think they could do to rebrand their website, so more men would want to use it?

Student

Should brands always give each and every type of social media a try to gain awareness from their target audience? Or should they already know not to waste their time and effort on certain social media such as Twitter and just stick to other ones like Facebook? - Just an example. I feel like even if you're not getting the greatest attention from a particular account, it still doesn't hurt your brand. It seems as if, no matter what, it's a positive to cover numerous platforms.

Student

Pinterest seems to be a great way of expressing deep interests and promoting your business. It's extremely easy to use, and pretty much any age group can use it! My question is, how can you use Pinterest to gain followers?

Student

Do you believe people are too easily offended in today's society with marketing? It seems that there are more and more restrictions because people become outraged. Eventually it seems all marketing will be banned because it's impossible to make everyone happy.

Student

What are the biggest differences between marketing on Pinterest and makreting on sites like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?

Student

It seems like certain social media platforms might have specific users/audiences. For example, Pinterest is often seen as a more "feminine" social media site. With that being said, do you think brands whose target audiences don't align with the user group of the social media site should even waste their time on that site? Or should they still create a profile for the small amount of their target audience that is there?

Student

Do you feel its necesarry for all brands to utilize all social media platforms? Or are there certain types of companies who will not benefit from certain social media platforms (say Pinterest) and should not waste their time and effort?

Student

My brand is UNIQLO, for brand mobile apps, UNIQLO has professional outlook and design. When I download the mobile app, it also has Automatic send message function. However, the app always sends you some emails and advertising, also when you using the mobile app, you will see another brand advertising. My question is how to avoid another brand advertising. And how to improve app more technologic make customer first time know the brand information.

Student

My company, KRAFT, uses social media such as pinterest to display their recipes. This is very common considering that pinterest is often used for cooking and recipes. For more corporate businesses, does it make sense to to use pinterest and how would they utilize it?

Student

I've always used pinterest for recipes, clothing, fun DIY projects, travel, and fun ideas but I've never utilized it for business until this class. I had no idea how much media information was on the wbesite. They have broken down so many complicated topics that made the concepts easier to understand or follow. I am a huge fan of pinterests organization because you find what you're looking for with a few key words, and then with those same keywords you find a link that you weren't even looking for but is useful anyway. I feel that pinterest would be very important for blogs and other forms of social media that can use click thorugh links. Its a very interesting media source that I'm sure many businesses could utilize for maximum benefit.

Student

I was new to the whole pinterest thing at the beginning of this class, and now I'm addicted... So, thank you guys for the enlightenment. I think it's a great way for certain businesses to reach out to consumers, but other companies really don't fit in there. Do you think companies that don't really fit in should stay away and ignore the popularity of pinterest or should they try to develop some techniques or projects that would allow them to fit in?

Student

Pinterest has gotten the reputation that it is only used by girls. It has not grown as much as other social media sites such as Instagram or Twitter. What will Pinterest have to do to reach out to both genders? Also, do you think this site will eventually become as big as a site like Twitter?

Student

How long would it take for a company to get recogonition for sending credible emails? I feel like it would take too long and eventually that company could be done with by that time.

My question this week is about Pinterest. I use Pinterest all the time for fun and to look up craft ideas. I was wondering what kind of companies would benefit most from using promoted pins on Pinterest? I'm doing my final project on Fiat and I feel like it would be a waste of money for a car company to use promoted pins because people don't usually decide to purchase such an expensive product while using Pinterest.

I really do believe that the more you narrow in on your target market, and adjust your strategy accordingly, the more effective your campaign/advertisment can be. When you take the time to really get to know your audience and learn what they like and dislike then yes, i agree, you can conjure up an ad that snipes your target market with little to no outsiders getting offended.

What brands are the best and most consistently successful with email marketing? I don't think that many of the emails I get on a daily basis are anything other than spam. They're very rarely useful in my eyes

Student

Is it necessary for all businesses to use search engine optimization? I feel as if some businesses will not see benefits from it because some customers do not look for some businesses or their products online in the first place.

I used to use Pinterest more often than I do now. When my college schedule and work schedule got busy my Pinterest time started to dwindle. I was only using it as a way to look up recipes and work outs not as a way to help with my professional career or business. My question for this week is how do you manage to get people to use this platform professionally and not just as a way to pass time as I was?

How important is integrating your Facebook and Pinterest page? Is it really necesary to utilize Pinterest when other media is getting more attention?

Student

When it comes to designing a website what is the first thing that you do in order to grab the viewers attention?

Student

I'm new to pinterest and it seems that it would be great for food, clothing, etc. type companies. Are there any type of sleeper companies or products that you could see working with pinterest?

Student

What kinds of comapnies is Pinterest most effective for? I know my brand is on Pinterest, but they have an extremely low following, and haven't posted much content at all. I don't think this is hurting them in this case though, because when searching for a flight or trying to communicate with an airline, most people wouldn't take to Pinterest to browse.

Student

I'd consider myself pretty well-informed and a very active participant in social media platforms. I have an Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Tumblr, and a Pinterest. Out of all of those my Pinterest is the one that I log into the least. I really don't understand why so many companies feel it's necessary to join Pinterest. To me, there's only so much a clothing brand like Zara can post on their page. Images of their own clothes...all of which would be available on their website. Pinterest doesn't give users the ability to communicate with the brand. I just feel like Pinterest is kind of a one-sided conversation in social media and it doesn't let the consumer interact much. Also, there's only so much a company can pin/repin without promoting another brand's products. If Zara saw a shirt they liked on H&M's pinboard, why repin a shirt that may detract attention from your store and give it to a competitor?

Student

I'm completely new to pinterest so before starting on my board I wanted to check out some other boards to gain some perspective on what was used in a typical pin. Some boards strictly follow the title of their boards (e.g Board title is "Kitchen Tables" and all there is is kitchen tables), but others that kind of wander off topic and pin some different things (same title for board but they also post kitchen accessories and cabinets). My question is is this a good way to attract new audience members to other boards thye usually wouldn't find interest in or do people who follow these boards dislike it when something new or different is posted?

Student

Is Pinterest a viable option/important for small businesses to focus on if they are struggling to get the word out?

Student

When companies use Pintrest, do you think they are pinning pictures for business benefits or to show people social responsibilty? In other words, do companies use photo sharing forums to help their products, or to help their image?

Student

Are companies more likely to use Pinterest to help them boost sales or to get information about their products and ways to use them out to consumers?
