Fifteen years ago when I first discovered the internet I would never have imagined Yahoo.com would ever be a dated, near irrelevant web property. When I was in highschool Yahoo ruled the web, much like Google does now. If you wanted to find anything worthwhile, you first visited this visually simplistic web directory. Yes, I said directory... because back then, we didn't have search engines. Yahoo was just a collection of websites organized by category. And yes, when they did develop software to search their listing it was nothing short of revolutionary.

Despite a huge IPO, plenty of funding and once massive profits Yahoo is struggling to remain relevant... and more importantly, survive. It seems at one point they made a critical strategic error. When considering the future of the company, Yahoo's leadership decided to focus on building a large content network rather than improve their search engine. As the leading search engine at the time, who could blame them? The alternatives were Lycos, Altavista and Webcrawler... and believe me, they were not any good.

But then along came Google, a small company that boasted a simple clean interface and better results. I don't need to tell you who won that battle. Since Google's rapid rise in the mid 2000's Yahoo has slowly downsized, sold subsideraries and done everything they could to slow their dwindling marketshare.

Recently, they  launched a redesign homepage. Take a look and then tell us what you think. Has Yahoo done something remarkable? Would you consider using them over Google? Or is this all too little, too late?

I like the redesigned homepage, which surprised me. I'm so set in my Google ways that I was bias against Yahoo before even looking at the new homepage.

That being said, I have a feeling Yahoo's efforts are too little, too late. I, and so many people I know, use Google for everything. It's not just a search engine. My email, my calendar, my documents. All contained in Google. Once everyone does something a particular way, all other ways become irrelevant. It wouldn't do much good to switch to Yahoo when everyone else still uses Google.

I applaud Yahoo's efforts, but I don't think they'll ever get what they want. Perhaps they need to narrow their target, and focus on a smaller niche audience.

Though the new design is definitely a major improvement over what they have had in the past, it's too little too late for Yahoo. A new design does nothing to change the clunkiness that I, and am sure others, associate with Yahoo. I remember when Yahoo was actually a decent search engine, when I was younger I would usually consult it for different listings than other engines at the time such as Askjeeves or Google. Over time though, the internet has progressed, and Yahoo always seemed behind the curve.

For me, going to Yahoo was always about searching, I cared about virtually nothing else on that landing page that they packed with an overload of news and advertisement. When it came down to it, the results I got from Yahoo and the results I got from Google started growing apart, with Google's always being better. In contrast, Google always strived to have a clean, simple, quick, and useful search experience, and that is what I was looking for. Add in all of the just as easy to use and useful services that they have created over the past decade, like Gmail, Google Drive, etc. and I honestly would never consider going back to Yahoo.

Student

I beleive that yahoo has definitely done some remarkable things in the past. Yahoo is still a great homepage to use in order to see top news stories and using many other capabilities. Though in terms of yahoo being my choice for search engines, it still does not beat out google. Google is the first search engine I will use if I need to search the internet. The only time that I ever use yahoo as a search engine is if it was my homepage or if I am already on yahoo.com. I think yahoo is still a great tool for staying up on current news and happenings. It is not too late for yahoo to strut some muscle as long as they come up with something that is new and fresh.

In my opinion, The yahoo homepage redesigning is way too late. I felt it is nothing special and I think it is based on any types of other search engine website. I am majoring in Advertising, in all classes, professors always let students to use google for resources. I know that Yahoo is trying to come back to thier highest position. However, I assume it will never be. Be honest, I never saw people who is using Yahoo! in my entire college life.

Student

Every time I open up my internet browser Yahoo is my homepage.  This is only because I have had the same e-mail address since high school.  The new home page doesn't seen that great to me.  It's barely different from the old page and I still won't use the search engine.  Even the fantasy sports annoy me.  Everything about Yahoo is a lower grade than other websites out there.  ESPN.com has better fantasy sports, Google is obviously a better search engine and has better e-mail features.  Sometimes I accidentally search for google using the Yahoo search because the page isn't fully loaded yet.  As you may already know... Not a fan of Yahoo.

Student

Unfortunately I feel that it is too little, too late for Yahoo. They have fallen too far off the map of relevant search engines, especially with Bing making the huge marketing push that they are. Google has done a terrific job of staying successful by branching out into other markets, like mobile OSs and cell phones. Yahoo is considered old and outdated and I really don't think internet users are too interested in making the switch back. Honestly, when I think of Yahoo, I think of waiting for my family's dial-up connection to stop making noises and just connect to the internet. I'm a Bing user for life!

Student

I believe Yahoo is doing all of this a little too late. Google is the dominant serch engine and Bing is a close second. Yahoo news and other outlets like that still draw attention but there are better options for your specific interestes like cnn, or espn. Yahoo is way past its prime and I think in 10 or so years it will be a thing of the past and will struglle to hold on.

Student

I think it is too little, too late. Yahoo was big when it first launched but the efforts Google has made to become more innovative with technology will forever be something I treasure in Google. Especially after using Yahoo mail for so long and finally switching to Gmail, I do not think I could switch back. The new design is cool, but I feel like it is too cluttered. There is too much going on and it is hard to focus your attention on one specific area of the page. In order for Yahoo to be effective, you also have to customize the page to make it more of your own which if you care enough about Yahoo you will do, but if you don't, then the website is not very successful.

Student

Although yahoo is still fairly popular, I do not believe it to be popular enough that redesigning the site will help to boost traffic. When we were younger, it was a very relevant search engine and news source as well as everything else one could need access to on the internet, but since then, many news companies, stores etc. have expanded their online presence, which takes away from Yahoo. Google and Bing definfitely excel in the serach engine category as well, making Yahoo not as great. I, personally, have become completely loyal to Google and will never use something else unless Google shuts down - which will probably never happen in my life time and if it does it's because they created a better Google. All in all, it is all too little, too late.

Student

Even with the new layout, Yahoo is not a relevant search engine to me. While it is a nice source to check out once in a while for articles I feel Yahoo will lose some market share. While it was the leading search engine of its time we have many more options today. In addition with Bing owning yahoo, I feel that yahoo will soon be dumped after bing strips it of its resources to improve their search engine.

Student

I think that yahoo serves as a great email host. I still have and use my account I created 9 years ago so I feel like they have that going for them. As far as news goes I think that they are a great source for interesting articles but I do not see them as a great search engine. When it comes to search engines I think Google takes the cake. Google has created a name which represents its entire market, "just google it" is all you hear people say today. Even before Google was popular I never used yahoo just because I always felt like I was cluttered with distracting messages and information that lead you away from what you're searching for. With Google it's clear, concise and to the point with no distractions making it the best search engine on the internet.

Student

I truly believe the new Yahoo redesign is too little, too late. A simple cosmetic change cannot shift enough users to Yahoo from Google when Google already has so many loyal followers. Consumers trust Google and Google's image is much more technical and sophisticated than that of Yahoo's. Typing google into my search bar is programmed into me, I do not see that changing any time soon. I support Yahoo's attempt, but there needs to be a lot more done if they wish to excel.

Student

I used to use Yahoo! very often when I was just an elementary school student. At that time, everyone thought that Yahoo! was the best, including its search engine. Today, I always use google when I need to search for almost everything, and I have never thought that Yahoo! would fall so quickly. I liked their new redesigned homepage, but the colors are somewhat depressing. The homepage became much cleaner, but somehow I feel that it is too late for Yahoo! to become succesful again as they did in early 2000s.

Student

I believe that it is a little too late for Yahoo to make a comeback. Many websites have been overcome by another, as Facebook taking out MySpace, but cannot help it but continue to wither away. Google is too widely known and simple to use. Now many websites are linked together by your google account boosting the value of a person's account. There really is no need for a site that is competing to have the same usage as Google unless the audience can find a better sort of benefit.

Student

I am a big google user.  I will continue to use google but recently I heard my friends dad say that he prefers yahoo instead of google.  He said that yahoo gives him better results.  It shocked me to hear that someone preferred yahoo over google but, my friends dad, being a succesful business man, I now use yahoo as a backup.  Although i will continue to use google first, if I ever struggle to find info, I will use yahoo as a back up.

Student

This is a very interesting piece, I for one do not understand how yahoo can be failing so badly.  As a TA for a media planning class we learned that yahoo is among the most popular internet news sites.  I feel that is the angle they should play to more rather than being a search engine business.  Google very clearly has a stranglehold in the search engine and it will simply not be unseated anytime soon. I find that yahoo is a very useful news site but I very very rarely use it as a search engine because the strength of the interface is simply not there

Student

I, like many anothers, also think that it is too late for Yahoo to ever become what they were. The main reason is obviously because Google just has too much of a stronghold as a search engine. Yahoo may always be around, but not because of their search engine. Honestly most of my friends who use Yahoo do so only for the articles, and you can tell by reading the comments of these articles that not many people are a fan of the new layout. Yahoo still has a chance to thrive, it just won't be as a search engine.

Student

I think that Google users will stay loyal to Google despite Yahoo’s efforts to make a comeback. I for example automatically turn to Google whenever I need to search for something, Yahoo doesn’t even cross my mind. I do feel that Yahoo’s new redesigned page is very convenient and has a lot of interesting links and topics that are of interest to many people. However some people might think the page just has too much clutter and might just want something simple like Google. It just depends on the person and what they like, I personally think Yahoo is just too little too late.

Student

I remember when yahoo was in its prime. When I was in middle school it was all about instant messaging and Yahoo Messenger was where it was at, at least in my school. Yahoo was the desired search engine and I wouldn’t have imagined then that yahoo would be losing interest in the future. Google’s simplicity along with the growth of the Internet and the need to search for the content you are looking for is what brought Google to the top. Put simply, Yahoos search engine never brings the good results. The redesign of the website is not going to change that users already discredit the site and wont return. Yahoo has had its day and it is too late to turn it around.

Student

Yahoo is most definitely a little too late. No matter what updates or homepage design changes Yahoo makes, I believe they will never be able to match up to Google. Google handsdown is the powerhouse when it comes to search engines. School systems choose to implement the great tool in their curriculum over any other competitor. At such young ages, students become accustomed to using google, without even considering other options.

Student

In my opinion, after a Internet site has lost its following, it can never truly regain an audience. A similar situation, MySpace, was once an Internet leader, and since undergoing redesigns has been unable to make a comeback. Yahoo, MSN, and AOL have become outdated sites that simply recyle content. Google has one specific purpose and it accomplishes this well. The site is basic, and is even a tool bar on many popular browsers. With the implementaiton of their new CEO Marissa Mayer, Yahoo! gained positive press and their was talk of a makeover. However, I feel this is too little too late. Why would individuals go looking anywhere other than Google, when they are widely known as the best?

Student

I think redesigning the Yahoo homepage is a little too late.  It isn't anything special and I think it looks just like the AOL homepage.  I was a finance major at one point and my professors and classmates would use Yahoo Finance for resources, but that information is in plenty of other places.  Many people probably don't even know that is a great resource and Google what they are looking for.  I think if Yahoo were really trying to comeback they would need to completely rebrand their image.  Even then, I don't think they have much of a chance.  The people who use Yahoo are the same people who can't figure out how to change their homepage.

Student

I think that it's a little too late for yahoo to once again become the dominant search engine. Google has pushed so far ahead of the competition it almost appears as though there is no other search engine, they have even created their own social media engine which is starting to compete with powerhouses like facebook and twitter. That being said I believe yahoo could survive as a secondary search engine with a massive redesign similar to google. I believe it's important for yahoo to first match what google does, then start becoming more innovative with their designs.

Student

It would take a lot for me to switch my homepage from Google to Yahoo. When is the last time you heard someone say "just Yahoo it"? I do have to give them credit though for trying to revamp their site. Google is dominating, so why not try something new? Unfortunately, I don't think I would ever choose Google over Yahoo. I am always satisfied with the results Google produces and the simplicity of the site. It gives me exactly what I want minus all the clutter Yahoo! presents on their homepage. Google is my search egine and I have other sites that I go to regualry for news and other updates. It is a little too late for not only Yahoo! but for all other Google competitors. I think it is safe to say that Google has a dominates the search engine category. Dont believe me? Google it!

Student

I think this is too little, too late for sure. The new design is good but Google is such a simple website that gets the best results that I don't think I would ever switch to anything else. Yahoo still has a pretty complicated design, especially for older people who don't use the internet as much. I guess in a couple years this could become popular but as of right now, I think Google will stay on top.

Student

I've been reading Yahoo's homepage for a few years now and the new design has not effected me at all. I actually think the content has improved and the new management is helping the company go places they have never bee. I've heard that before, Yahoo allowed some of its workers to write and blog from home, as opposed to coming in to an office space surronded by other writers. This has allowed the content to become improve drastically and seems like a better business model in the long run. Also, when I read the sports section, some of the writers (Chris Chase) seemed to have no idea what they were talking about and often just wrote articles that totally negated what actually happened. They would put their own spin on it that had nothing to do with the news at hand. So for me, the redesign is not a big deal as much as the new managements stricter policy and improved working environments. I also would not consider them over Google, just because Google has it all.

Student

I'd say it's definitely too little, too late. The new interface is cool I suppose but even a new layout won't draw me in for too long. While Yahoo! is bookmarked on my Google Chrome browser, the only thing I use Yahoo! for is to look at their pop culture headlines every so often. But even then, at least half of the stories are from the Associated Press, which I look at on my AP app daily. It's nice to see what top 10 cities for college graduates to live in but past that Yahoo! seems irrelevant to me. However, I'm sure there are some people who use Yahoo for other reasons such as for their sports scores or investment projections but I'd have to say that I'd use Google for either of those. I even deleted my long-time Yahoo! mail account for a Gmail account. Sorry, Yahoo!, there's a new kid in town and he's way more popular than you.

Student

As soon as I get to the page, I notice it has a lot going on. Maybe too much. Where do you look first? The rotating visual headlines? The headlines below that? What's going on at the top right corner? Okay, now look to the left. Wayyyy too much going on. Google is sleek and right to the point. Right in your face. I understand Yahoo wants to incorporate news headlines with their search engine and other things, but it's too much. I just can't decide what to click on first, and I think many people agree with me. I remember when Yahoo was the main search engine, but as you explained, they didn't put enough time, effort, and money into keeping them at a competetive advantage. I would say this is all too little too late. The only time I visit Yahoo is when I click on a news link that originated from Yahoo. Bumber for them. Google is just way too ahead in the game.

Student

I don't think the redesigned homepage of Yahoo is anything special or remarkable. It's still fairly crowded and cluttered with a lot of things I don't really care about or plan to check whenever I'm on the site. However, Yahoo still remains to be my homepage primarily because I use Yahoo Mail more than Gmail. However, most of my accounts of Gmail are used in the professional world as I've learned that appears to be the norm whereas all my Yahoo mail accounts are things I use for misc purposes (signing up on social networks, Xbox Live, etc). Overall, I probably still use Yahoo more than Google to search for things since it remains as my homepage but I'm starting to use Google a lot more and definitely prefer its simplicity and use of space.

Student

I still think Yahoo's new homepage is very crowded and busy. If they were going for simple and clean, they missed the mark. However, I don't think yahoo should be trying to become the new search engine. Bing is trying that, and honestly they are a laughing stock to any 20-something who knows a thing or two about the internet. Google rules. I do think Yahoo could expand more on their news homepage. I think that's a great resource to see the top headlines quickly. if they focused on that, more than being the number one search engine, they might find more success.

Student

YAHOO tries to be innovative by redesigning their homepage

Yahoo is a day late and dollar short on the whole innovation. Now there are so many news website that really tailor content to your interests or have news in a humorous way. Yahoo would have to do something more epic than just change their homepage to get people back on the Yahoo bandwagon. I will be honest one of my friends has a yahoo email and I think it makes her seem behind.  Yahoo has not done anything remarkable as compared to new startups and even Google.

Student

I am such a google supporter that nothing Yahoo will ever do will change me over to using them. Google has been solidified in my set as the best search engine because of it's simplicity and effectiveness. Yahoo has too much going on and it's organization is still too messy for me. Definitely too little, too late.

Student

To me even this new Yahoo is too busy. Google is just a simple clean search engine and all their other options are in a bar up at the top. Only if you use them do you even notice them. I do not read Yahoo for any sort of news that is why I just Google things. In fact I often find myself Googling sites I already know the address too just out of habbit, such as CNN and ESPN. Yahoo has a large group of loyal followers and I do not think it will ever disappear, at least until Google expands even more and starts reporting on sports and national news.

Student

I am finding that the more and more I use Google, the more frustrated I become with the site. Ads and other annoying pop ups have become more prevalent in the past few months. The new redesigned Yahoo seems a bit cluttered but will definitely show improvement in their users. I don’t believe that Yahoo will make a full comeback or even come close to what Google has achieved in such a small time but there is always time to improve. As the younger generation moves us using Google all the time, it’s only getting tougher.

Student

I would also agree that when I first started using the Internet, I was using Yahoo! as my main search engine. Even though the YAHHHOOOOO commercials were annoying, it was a branding strategy and people remembered the website. Now, I would say that the sports writing is not so good, but the news articles that they produce are pretty entertaining. As far as an actual search goes is concerned, I think Google takes the cake. The results are much better compared to any other search engine, it is more user friendly and it has less advertisements. What I will say is that yahoo will be a leader in e-mail home addresses because all of my friends own a Yahoo! e-mail address. Therefore, the redesign homepage will attract some of the Yahoo e-mail users to using their site to search instead of Google.

Student

I think the redesigned homepage on Yahoo will help keep them around but I still don't think Yahoo will ever compare to google. I think the Yahoo homepage is too cluttered with useless information and most likely isn't the first place people go for news. I like google because its simple. I can type in what I want to find and Google gives me the best results.

Student

For me, I use both Google and Yahoo for different features. Anytime I want to look up articles or search for a specific website I will always use Google (ex. If I wanted to look up articles on Michigan athletics, I would always search for stories through the Google database. As far as Yahoo goes, I would use their site for a few different features. I like the fact that Yahoo has tabs on the side of their website specified for certain categories. Anytime I want to check out what's showing at the movies theater I use Yahoo. I also use Yahoo for fantasy sports leagues. Everyday I tend to click on several top news stories on the Yahoo front page as well, mainly because I use it as my front page when I open the internet. So when it comes to my usage, both Yahoo and Google are valuable to my needs. I don't think it is too late for Yahoo.

Student

I think the yahoo redisign will keep the search engine around for a long time but it will still be no match to google. The news you see on yahoos front page comes across as just tabloid news which I could care less about and yahoos sports writing is considered sub par by virutally everyone who follows sports. I also think that googles gets me better results than yahoo and has less advertisments.

Student

When I first started using the internet, I too used Yahoo at first.  After I discovered Google, however, there was no turning back.  Even after looking at their newly redesigned homepage it just looks like too much stuff I am not interested in.  The thing with Google is it takes a no-nonsense approach to the search engine.  It is only there to find what you are looking for and I think thats what makes it the favorite for everyone who uses it.

Student

I’m not a fan of the new Yahoo.  I think they put too much on the site and it’s lots of advertising.  When I go to Google the site doesn’t pop out at me or bother me with a bunch of celebrity news.  If I want to find that information I am free to search the site and find those article but I’m not thrown into it.  I will continue to use Google!

Student

When I was younger I used to use yahoo all the time, but it was mostly because of the horoscopes and fun games they had. I also used the search engine but it never really gave me any good answers. I use google for everything now, and nothing else. Yahoo has revamped their site but I only use it for news and updated information. I think it might be a little too late for yahoo only becauase google is used for everything.

Student

I use Yahoo on a daily basis, but not as a search engine. I love reading their news stories and other content, but their search engine, like you said, is just not up to par. I actually get pissed when my search engine on my phone accidently gets switched from Google to Yahoo. Since I use Yahoo almost every day, I instantly noticed their redesigned homepage. I think that it kind of look like a kindergartener designed parts of the site, but I still love that they display a variety of news stories on the front page, as well as the top 10 things that are trending. I like both Yahoo and Google for their various aspects that suit my lifestyle, but I'd have to say that if Google provided the things I loved about Yahoo, combined with their already existing applications and search engine, I wouldn't have to think twice about using only Google.

Student

The only thing I use Yahoo for is the answers, because I like thier point systems. Google is much more convenient for searching, shopping, and everything else. Google has always been a great search engine, and I have always been loyal to Google. I have my email account with Google, and it rarely gets spam. It also allows me to build an iGoogle page, which I have customized to match my preferences. This is set as my homepage. It's really convenient, and I love the clean interface. Yahoo's homepage has always been cluttered with random news and it's distracting. It's not what I came there for; I wouldn't go there for news. Yahoo's new homepage isn't much different; it's still cluttered and messy with random news stories. Not to mention the overly girly color scheme. So I think it's too little too late for Yahoo.

Student

I use google for everything except the answers because google uses real money, where as yahoo uses a "point" system. Yahoo is a classic, but Google is trying to take over the world. With Yahoo quickly dying away, most of us will prefer to use Google. I like to use Google because it's convenient, they have better browser and better add on services. So I think it is too little too late for Yahoo to launche the redesign homepage.

Student

I support both sides in this debate. I'm a huge Google user; it's my go-to website. My iPhone Safari app was using Yahoo for some reason and I felt the need to immediately change the settings to Google. However, I do use a Yahoo email account. I needed something other than my school email, and I wasn’t a fan of the gmail settings and layout.

Yahoo’s new homepage is better than their old one, and you can tell they are trying really hard to appeal to the masses and attract all different interests. But my overall opinion is that they are trying too hard, it’s almost overwhelming how much they have going on with their homepage. It’s a little distracting with all the colors, pictures, weather and stock widgets and sports updates. In a way, I guess they need to keep updating if they intend on keeping up with their competitors, but I feel they could achieve this in a more simple and minimalistic way.

Student

I think it is just too little too late for Yahoo. Although the homepage redesign is cool and personal i don't think it is enough to save them. A cool design will not reinvent the company. Yahoo simply doesn't have the following it needs. There are so many othe websites out there that do the same thing as yahoo and in a more up to date fashion. I think Yahoo is the next "hotmail". It was a company that had a lot of potential but did not keep up with the ever evolving internet and therefore is soon to become obsolete.

Student

I have never associated Yahoo with being a search engine website. I always use Google. If I had to name an alternative search engine, it would be Bing. I think of Yahoo as more of a home page. At my house we have Comcast internet and their homepage kind of resembles what Yahoo looks like. On websited like Google and Bing, there is little to no other clutter, just a search engine. I think that because it makes searching easier, rather than having a full page of news and information. If I had used Yahoo in the past or maybe had it as my default homepage I would use it for my search engine rather than Google, but I do not.

Student

I think this video says it all. Yahoo had its chance back when everyone used their email services to create some ridiculous address, mine was volleystar1435@yahoo.com because I thought I was awesome at volleyball, I've grown to be 5'2 if that tells you how awesome I am at it now. Google is the king of search engines, bottomline. Not even Bing, with their pathetic "Bing it on Challenge" can compete with Google. Both Yahoo and Bing need to try a stab at something else on the internet. Because unless they can come up with something more brilliant than Google's whole line of products from their search engine, to Google Drive, to Google Docs... then I'm just not interested.

Student

To be honest, even if Yahoo has redesign and began to develop the website into a search engine, Google is still dominating. There’s just so much more you can do with Google, and a lot of people use it. I remember making my email account for Yahoo and going onto it every day but now I hardly ever use Yahoo. I feel like Yahoo just made it more complicated because personally, I like something simple and easy to use (interface).  I also feel like a lot more things pop up when I search under Google compared to any other ones. It is essential for Yahoo to come up with better ideas and concentrate on what people really want to look for on a search engine website. I’ve been using Google docs, Chrome, Google+, Gmail, etc. and these are all useful.

Student

If Yahoo is able to promote their new site enough for people to notice I think that they can get more people back to their site. The new homepage offers more than just a search engine to people who view it involving important news stories all the way too celebrity gossip. Their top stories will be able to engage most viewers but word of mouth will not bring the amount of people they need to the site. With a good media plan this new homepage could bring Yahoo back.
