Fifteen years ago when I first discovered the internet I would never have imagined Yahoo.com would ever be a dated, near irrelevant web property. When I was in highschool Yahoo ruled the web, much like Google does now. If you wanted to find anything worthwhile, you first visited this visually simplistic web directory. Yes, I said directory... because back then, we didn't have search engines. Yahoo was just a collection of websites organized by category. And yes, when they did develop software to search their listing it was nothing short of revolutionary.
Despite a huge IPO, plenty of funding and once massive profits Yahoo is struggling to remain relevant... and more importantly, survive. It seems at one point they made a critical strategic error. When considering the future of the company, Yahoo's leadership decided to focus on building a large content network rather than improve their search engine. As the leading search engine at the time, who could blame them? The alternatives were Lycos, Altavista and Webcrawler... and believe me, they were not any good.
But then along came Google, a small company that boasted a simple clean interface and better results. I don't need to tell you who won that battle. Since Google's rapid rise in the mid 2000's Yahoo has slowly downsized, sold subsideraries and done everything they could to slow their dwindling marketshare.
Recently, they launched a redesign homepage. Take a look and then tell us what you think. Has Yahoo done something remarkable? Would you consider using them over Google? Or is this all too little, too late?
Comments & Feedback
Google has just been too big for too long. It'd be a hassle, if anything, to switch to anything else. Yahoo hasn't done anything too fantastical to win anyone's favoritism over google. Google is still very simplistic, and people seem to like it that way. It's like going from a manual car to a stick. It still does all the same exact functions, why should i put in the extra effort for the same result when i already like my manual just fine? What does the stick have to offer?
I believe this change for Yahoo was too little too late. While it is appealing to the eyes, I think the main one thing that draws me to Google is it's simplicity. Yahoo's page reminds me somewhat of AOL, which I only ever used in the early 2000s and is now also irrelevant. Unfortunately it looks as though Yahoo fell behind at the worst possible time and has incurred too much hurt to return to the level it once was.
There is no way that yahoo will be able to be as big as it was before Google. Now-a-days Google is king of the search engine and there aren’t going to give up the crown any time soon. Yahoo was one of the first major web sites that offered many features like email, a search engine, and news. It is still a major website and company but it doesn’t have the power that it use to back in the day. Yahoo is going to have to go back to the drawing board and try to come up with a new idea. Right now the other companies like Google and Bing are paving the way and coming up with new ideas. One of the ideas/strategies these two companies are using are using mobile apps.
I don't think Yahoo will ever be able to be as big as it was before Google. When using a search engine, there is no hesitation when it comes to using Google. It especially makes it easier because I use the browser Google Chrome. When trying to find information, most people will "Google it," it's just second nature. I believe as well that Google has a better email feature. I've had multiple yahoo accounts that have received viruses and spam whereas that rarely happens with gmail. When it comes to simplicity, Google takes it in the bag for that as well. It's layout is very simple and user friendly. The one feature I prefer about Yahoo is Yahoo top stories. I read them almost everyday, but even if i'm on their website and need to search something I will open up Google to do so.
Growing up I often switched between what search engine I most frequently used. I would normally start with google, and if I could not obtain the information I needed there I would check yahoo, then others. Through the years I have transitioned into a complete google user. I do believe yahoo’s shelf life is dated.
Since high school google has transformed into something was larger than a search engine. They have their own browser, emailing service, social network, computer line, etc. Another great thing about their products is they are compatible with each other and information can be shared across their network. Yahoo has not transformed in my eyes. I have honestly one last use for yahoo, and that is fantasy football. Before this season I have never used yahoo for it before, and I was surprised when I found out we were. Yahoo has not transformed itself with time, and I believe google will outlive, and eventually buyout, or take over yahoo.
To be completely honest, Yahoo is really irrelevant now. Granted it is still one of the most commonly used search engines it just has been swallowed by its competitors. When I first began using the Internet Yahoo was to the go to network but that was over 13 years ago. Going off of tTo be completely honest, Yahoo is really irrelevant now. Granted it is still one of the most commonly used search engines it just has been swallowed by its competitors. When I first began using the Internet Yahoo was to the go to network but that was over 13 years ago. Going off of their new front-page design, I still think it is too cluttered. Yahoo really struggles with the concept of “less is more”. I personally use Google everyday for everything. The comparison from not only the design of the pages of these major search engines but also the relevance of the resources are very different. Not to crack down on Yahoo but I feel they had their reign but were not able to adapt and evolve with the times as well as their competitors. I do believe it is a little too late to try to recover.
I think it is kind of late. Yahoo close its service in Korea because actually no korean uses yahoo. It is sounds funny that people do something when they get stuck. Before get stuck if yahoo did something, there would be no resulted as no more services in Korea market. Contrast with google, google did very good job for improving the services for other fields, but yahoo is always at behind of google when they change something. Yahoo should did redesigned it quicker than this
I'm not going to say that Yahoo didn't do a good job improving their homepage, but I don't believe they have done something remarkable. Google has really established itself as the quickest, most efficient search engine offered. I think it may just be a little too late from Yahoo as well. Google has developed google chrome, which has amazing features that come along with the browser. Gmail and the connection with Youtube also puts Google light years ahead of Yahoo for me. There is something just easier and cleaner about Google to me that Yahoo just won't be able to recreate. In order to really get me to switch over it would really take something drastic.
I don't think Yahoo can recover marketshare to the level that they had before google. They can't come close. When I think of Yahoo I think news, sports, and the last thing I think is a search tool. Yahoo has too much going on on the page. Google is just google, a search tool. It's clean, trim, and you know what it does. Google has also become a verb. When you want to know something you Google it, you don't yahoo it, you don't ask Jeeves (anymore), and you don't Bing anything. Bing might have posed a major threat to Google, they have alot of money, Bing is also a verb, it's easy to say, but it went public that they copied google's technique for searching, that killed their reputation for many people and it will be a long time before they can regain their credibility. For now Google is the only viable search engine in my opinion. They are the kleenex of the internet. Not only does Google offer a search service they also do maps. Apple has tried to make it hard for google to get on their devices offering Apple users "apple maps" instead that have had numerous problems during the past few years, I have even been frustrated with them. http://www.siliconindia.com/news/technology/10-Reasons-Why-Apple-Bans-Google-from-iOS-6-nid-125773-cid-2.html. Many people have acknowleged the debate between google and bing highlighted by the website http://www.bing-vs-google.com/ where users can search for things on bing and google simutaniously and compare results.
I used to love Yahoo when I was in high school. When I go to college, I feel like Gmail can do much better than Yahoo. I can say, it is too late for me to hear that Yahoo redesigns. We probably grow up with Yahoo but find a new best friend, Gmail.
I like Google especially when I am using gmail to send out email. I can click “undo” to cancel the message that I sent by mistake. It makes me less embarrassing to prevent me sending out email to wrong person. It’s not always happen to me but I think the “undo” option is necessary. Also, Google is the top search engine site and has a high reputation for it, it is no doubt that people like many of Google's product. It’s hard for Google loyal customers to change preference to Yahoo because of its redesign. It is too late for Yahoo to update their design or technology. Yahoo may need to understand the market and online user better.
I am entirely in agreement with that. Moreover, I realized that there were too many ads while I am doing the internet. One of the reasons why I started to use Google comes from that point. Google is quite simple than Yahoo. Yahoo shut down its Korean service in 2012, before that time its design was too complicated to read or find something (it is just my opinions). However, the most important thing was that Yahoo Korea might be complacent when Korean search engine company (such as NAVER, Daum) redoubled their endeavor to create new service for smart phone and develop new contents.
Sure, the new redesign is nice... but Yahoo will never build up to the success that Google has. Google is the number one search engine, the go-to guide for answers. And what's most remarkable about google is, is that the homepage contains the word, "Google" in the middle of the website and a search box... that's it. If yahoo can come up with a way to implement so little design and still be successful like Google, I would consider using the engine. Right now, there's too much info coming at me causing the site to look bulky and unorganized.
Yahoo finally redesigns. I noticed this as I unexpectedly logged into my email and saw all of the updates and changes. Though visually I do enjoy the new layout of the homepage, I do think that it might be too late for the company. I use yahoo because I like the scroll on top which has the top 70 news articles and makes it easily accessible, I know that most people do not use it as their first source of information for news. The ads on this new homepage seem bigger and frankly in my opinion a bit distracting. But I guess it could be worth it if they are actually making money off of the people who are using the ads as space.
I use Yahoo! on a fairly frequent basis, but not as a search enginge. I typically use it as a news aggregate to see what the headlines are at any given time, and I prefer it over CNN/MSNBC/etc. (let's not even pretend Fox has a "news" channel, shall we?). I think they do well on this front, and on their sports offerings. Their sports blogs are quite solid, and they seem to have a dominant foothold in the fantasy sports section (no one I know uses ESPN, everybody uses Yahoo!). With that being said, the content hosted there is not enough - I'm a big sports fan, so I still go to ESPN, Deadspin, etc. for sporting news and different takes on the same topic. I use my Yahoo! e-mail as my junk account, with my Google Mail being my main account. iGoogle is my homepage, but this service will be shuttered by Google in the coming months so I will be on the lookout for a new site - is it likely Yahoo! will be it? No, but it's still in the running.
Also, I'm not sure how many young people actually load search engines to search when the task can be completed within the search engine bar or within the address bar itself. This is where Google really stepped ahead of Yahoo! in coming out with their own Chrome browser, as everything is set to Google by default. Yahoo! did merge some of its online presence with Microsoft, who themselves have become more prominent in the field with Bing so there's more under the Yahoo! hood than meets the eye.
From my experience, most people I know that use Yahoo, use it for the email service, not as a search engine. Personally, I wouldn't consider using Yahoo over Google for a search engine. Google is, simply, too good and too easy to use for me to consider making a change.
The only thing I can ever remember using Yahoo for is clicking on the exclaimation point to make it say "Yahooooo!" but that quirky feature seems to be gone.
I think Yahoo's new interface is better than it was. However, I don't think i will ever switch from Google to Yahoo. I don't like Yahoo as a search engine because it gives me bad results. I think that it is too late for Yahoo to compete Google now. It's even hard to find someone using Yahoo. I don't think not that many people will use Yahoo unless they do REALLY remarkable things.
I have never been a huge fan of Yahoo, mostly because I hate their search engine. I think it is way to late to join the game against Google becasue so many people are loyal to Google and have no reason to change. On the flip side, I think that those loyal to Yahoo will stay loyal no matter if they change their hompage or not. I think that Yahoo is for an older audience that never switched to Google as it became increasingly popular. I would never consider switching from Google to Yahoo, and I think that many people I know feel the exact same way. Google has been established as the go-to Internet resource and has never proven to be faulty.
I still feel like their interface looks pretty lame and out-of-date. Instead of really re-vamping the site they just rearranged their main page and I'm still left with the overwhelming feeling that what I'm looking for can't really be found on the website. But on the plus side, I do like how everything is accessible right on the main page without having to navigate all around the website, much like how I feel with other search engines. It's a bit cluttered with everything right there but I do feel as though it gets the job done. At this point, I think it's too late for Yahoo unless they completely change their site. As far as I know, only the technologically disabled use this site, and I feel like it's not going anywhere at this point.
I have always used yahoo as my mail email source but when it comes to using a search engine I have always used google. I like their new layout, but when it comes to search engines google has always given me the best results and the least trash. I would use yahoo if I needed to but I think when it comes down to it google will always be number one when it comes to a search engine.
To be honest, I don't think I've ever actually used Yahoo as a search engine choice. I have always used Google or occasionally back in high school used Ask. I don't think Google will ever be knocked out of first place in the search engine race. Even with this redesign Yahoo has done, I don't think it will be enough to make any significant change in usage of Yahoo. With this redesign, I hadn't even heard of this happening until I saw it on this blog, so for the many Google users, they won't probably know about Yahoo's redesign unless they visit the page themselves. So the only people to see the redesign will be already users of Yahoo. Unfortunately, I believe it's a little too late. Sorry Yahoo.
I have always been a Google person. Since I was younger when I first started using the internet, I have grown accustomed to certain cites sites and places that I go to in order to gather information--Yahoo has never been that site for me. I think that people use a site, find the one they like and then continue to use it. I think that as much as Yahoo redesigns and relaunches, it won't increase their site useage or their number of visitors. People are stuck in their ways and grow comfortable, and it is difficult to break people's brand loyalty and get them to switch to your product. I think people like the ease and clutterless aspect of other search engines like Google or Bing, where Yahoo has always seemed a little overworked with lots of spam-like content. I don't think Yahoo will ever be able to compete with Google or Bing, or any other site that comes along. The world of the interenet is progressing too rapidly and Yahoo just can't seem to catch up.
I feel that Yahoo now caters to an "older" demographic. My stepdad still uses Yahoo (for secondary purposees, not primary) and I feel like its because he learned and became more comfortable using computers through Yahoo. Now though, students don't like all the "clutter" on Yahoo's home page. I don't want to sort though 20 news stories just to find an email sign in. Students who are trying to research something on the internet don't want all that crap in their way, we are a want it now generation, we want what we typed in the search bar and nothing else. And on top of that, I think Yahoo's main page is way too over crowded for the majority of people, not just students. Part of a good web design is a visually pleasing balance of text and media, I just think Yahoo failed to find that balence.
I agree!
I wouldn't say too little too late but rather too much too late. It might just be me...but when I type in Google.com I really enjoy going to a page with one search bar, no ads, no news, no stocks, no sport scores, no weather, nothing. If I want to search for something that is what I am looking for. In addition, I am just find with searching for news, weather, stocks, scores, etc when I want to see them. I don't need to see them on the home page. It is too busy.
Well, actually I am not a Yahoo generation (Not that I mean 'young' though, I'm 22 now) however, I know Yahoo was a first innovation in internet world. It was shocking at back then and in current days, things are moving so fast. Catching the trend is essential to line into social network users' preference. I would say it is not too late but Yahoo definately needs to improve something and provide differenciated service than any other search engines.
Honestly I think the redesign is a lot more current than how it was set up before. It was getting a bit outdated compared to all of the newer websites. I've actually asked a few people before if they ever use Yahoo, MSN, or other search engines other than Google. Everyone said they use Yahoo for their news section because they seem to combine interesting articles with top stories. Many news sites focus on all negative articles but Yahoo adds those fun or helpful articles such as a dog rescuing it's owner from a fire or healthy eating tips. The new design really emphasizes it's news section in a great way and I think it will benefit the company.
In my opinion, Yahoo has a great new section with the most current stories. I also think that it isn't too late to rebrand yourself, and it's better in some cases to lay off with your rebranding so you can see what else the market has done.
Though the new yahoo interface is interesting, I feel as if there is such an influx of media in my everyday life that I prefer google becuase of its simplicity. I do however appreciate the interesting story feed at the top, but like noted previously, its too much and a little ... well a lot too late. Yahoo might be better off just selling or merging while they can. The way I see it yahoo has become the myspace of search engines- it used to rule to category, but something more simple and stream lined came along and totally wiped them out, leaving it to the technology laggards.
I like Yahoo's new design. Seeing their new design does not make me want to stop using Google and turn to yahoo. I will always be a loyal user of Google. However, I think yahoo's new look is more organized and interactive than before. A couple things that caught my eye when looking at the new yahoo is their slideshow of hot topics and their trending now cloumn.
Too litte, too late? I don't think so. Yahoo! is still a great news site - that's what drives the most traffic there. It's a great site to use as a homepage, though people are eschewing it in favor of Facebook, Google, and Twitter. Despite this, it is still the best place to find out what important news stories are happening. Though sites such as Reddit are increasingly relevant to popularity of a news article, Yahoo! and AOL will still be important disseminators of information. Yahoo! needs to focus on this to be successful.
The new Yahoo page is organized a lot better. It seems like people would find it much easier to use. However, I do not find it anything special or very creative. The new image is great for them, but I feel like no one really uses Yahoo anymore. A better idea would have been to do this long ago.
I think that Yahoo is fighting an impossible battle against google. Google cannot be defeated for the time beaten and every company that has gone against google has lost. Google is a web giant that owns and adminsters many elements of the internet. It has become an essential part of every day culture and shapes the world we live in today. Therefore, I think that no matter what yahoo does it is too late unfortuantely. Yahoo might want to try to focus their resources on other projects that google has not yet ventured to.
I still believe that yahoo.com is still too cluttered in their new layout. I know that they don't want to go straight to a Google knockoff but all their "Apps" on the side are just annoying. Of course you can customize your hompage ot the things you want to see but if you have the worlds best seach engine at a few keys away, then why swtich to a collage of junk that you barely read. Its like a magizine having the first 20 pages being advertisements before the actually articles.
I used to use Yahoo forever ago. My "Yahoo email" was developed shortly after I discovered AIM (AOL Instant Messaging). Therefore, I slowly migrated to AOL due to all the options they offered with email, searching, etc. After a while, AOL went "out of style" so I was hesitant toward using Yahoo, and even Google. But Google has developed multiple tools over the years so I decided to create a Google account. Since then, Google has continued to innovate and develop their tools. Therefore, I'll be using Google over Yahoo for a long time... unless Yahoo comes up with something truly remarkable.
It sounds incredible then what they had. However, personally just like some people prefer a certain brand over another I think Google is the brand I favor. I ahve always enjoyed my searches way better through google then any other serach engone so it may be a little too late.
Personally the Yahoo page seemed over whelming and disorganized. Too much was going on the oage from advertismens to news to differnt kind of seraches. On the other hand Googe is simple, organized and quick. It has a better out look and has extended its services to the gmail and drive which I use emensly.
Honestly, I don't think what Yahoo has done is that impressive. I would consider it to be similar to Facebook's timeline update, while not being at the peak of the company's popularity. it just feels underwhelming; the term "Meh" comes to mind.
While Yahoo has never been a bad search engine, Google has become so mainstream and such a comfortable medium to use that I don't see why I would switch to using Yahoo. Having images, videos, and other content displayed in the way I'm used to and already having few bugs, I'm not impressed enough with Yahoo to make a switch. I would say it's definitely on the "too little, too late" lines, although I don't think that Yahoo is toast.
Personally I like the new design Yahoo! has switched to. I use Yahoo! to get all my news, sports scores, finance information and other importnt things that might factor into my life. I like the new design because it keeps the the information fresh and is kind of refreshing. Keep up the good work Yahoo!
I don't blame Yahoo for focussing on trying to build a content network instead of competing with Google for search. I still believe that had they competed in the search game, they'd still be losing. And if that were the case, they'd have nothing now. Whereas now, at least they still have their content. Just like AOL changed to be a content company. Now AOL is seeing profits again. It's possible. A struggle, but possible.
The redesigned homepage does nothing for me. Because it's a homepage. I don't use homepages. I get online and do what I need to do, not browse content. I don't know, maybe my Mom needs a homepage. But I think that's the thing. If it's peoples' default homepage then they'll look at their content. I don't know many people that would just get online to hit up Yahoo.com to check things out.
However, I never in a million years would use any of Yahoo's properties over Google's.
Nah, I think Yahoo is still a llittle too late. I would have been impressed and interested if they had tried to compete with Google when they first came out but now I'm not that interested. I'm confident in Google's ability not Yahoo's. Yahoo is an accurate serch engine and I was an avide Yahoo-er when they first arrived but I don't think they can hold water to Google at this point.
At first, I felt that this really looks like a "RSS feed page." It has a category on left, and middle contents are scollable to see news. Yes, it is a good design and easy to navigate, but this is not for people who want to search something. From that point, I think that Yahoo .com shifted their position from search engine to "content department store" or something. I do not want to search from this page; I definitely use google. However, if I just want to look around something and do not have a "word" for search, this Yahoo.com page wil be a good friend. But now... I think there are a lot of website like this Yahoo.com page...right?
My first email account was with Yahoo and ive been going to that site since I was 13 or so and I think that it might near the end for Yahoo unfortunately. I really enjoy Yahoo as a site and email provider but they just cant compete with google for search engines and even with their new interface which frankly I find a little hard to navigate, they still wont be able to claw their way back up the ladder. I think that they will stick around even if its just for their email but if they plan to try and compete at the level google is at then I think they will find that its going to be an uphill battle.
Honestly, Yahoo.com may be too little too late. I remember Lycos and Altavista and pretty soon Yahoo is going to be added to the same category that they're in. I'd never consider using them over Google. They had the change to be the best, but they let another company steal their spot. I don't feel bad for them. They should have stayed on top. I took a look at the homepage, but it doesn't do that much for me. Google's homepage has pretty much NOTHING on it and it's just fine. Yahoo needs more than a new homepage to keep up.
The new Yahoo page is much more organized and easy to use, it points the eye in the right direction, but it still even looks generic and cheap. Even so, I'm afraid it's too late to change the whole game around with just a new look. I am sure there are still people out there who use yahoo but now that google is around and people know how much better and more reliable google is, Yahoo's name has been marked with a bad rep. Even though they took the time to redesign and make their page more user friendly they did it a little too late in the game to make a "remarkable" turn around. People know and trust google, they are not going to go back to using an old way of searching when they've already found better.
I'm still not super impressed with the Yahoo! homepage. I think there's still too much going on. When you go to the Google homepage, there's just their signature Google logo and a search bar. While, I don't think Yahoo! should copy Google, they should take a page out of their book and simplify even more. For example, they might try to just keep their top news scroll, and get rid of the timeline of news at the bottom, and instead put a link for the rest of the news stories. I just feels as though there is a lot going on, and I perfer the simplicty of Google over Yahoo's new homepage.
I think Yahoo's redesign looks great and seems more user-friendly. However, I think Yahoo is a thing of the past and will continue to struggle to remain relevant.
I'm definitely with you in that I could have never imagined this company becoming so irrelevant. When I got my first computer in my room, I immediately setup my homepage to yahoo and created a yahoo email account. However, yahoo's main source of revenue was as a search engine. Unfortunately for them, google anihilated the competition ever since it's debut. I, personally, a redesign will do them much good. Once people have a perception of a brand or company in their heads, it's hard to change that, especially in a positive direction.
The new Yahoo! homepage is definitely more eyecatching. You can tell they put a lot of effort in creating a simpler, relevant format.
But, I do believe that Yahoo! is in the past. Google is the dominant market and with hold that position likely for a very long time. Even with Yahoo!'s redesign, they still remain in the back of consumer's minds. Google is a household name... For example, you hear "I'll Google it" all the time. Yahoo! is a thing of the past and is wasting their time trying to keep up.
I have had a Yahoo! email account ever since I was a kid, so I may be a little biased. Whenever I log in to check my email I usually scroll through their headline stories and consistently find something work reading. As far as the search engines go, however, I've always used Google. I like the Yahoo! interface and layout, and all the information it has to offer at first glance (such as trending topics, weather, top music, and stock information) so I can learn about a handful of things without needing to look for them through a search engine. I think their update for a search engine is too late though, Google has completly taken over the market despite the efforts of Ask.com and Bing. If they can't crack into the market, I don't think Yahoo! has much of a chance either. I comend them for their efforts to keep up with the changing market, but I still wouldn't choose them over Google when searching.
Yeah, it's too late for Yahoo to make a strong comeback. I only check Yahoo for emails and confirmation emails when I order things online. Yahoo is the email address I used when I HAVE to put one down to verify that I'm a user. After that, it's pretty much just there to collect mail. Also, in my opinion, the new design is not unique enough to attract wanted traffic to the site.
