As much as I hate every time Facebook changes something and then spending the time to learn the new changes, I've actually been pretty happy with the changes I've seen thus far. I like that when viewing a picture, it doesn't pop up in a new screen like it used to. When you "x" out of the photo, you are still at the original page that you were at. I also like the mini photos on each person's individual profile. And the good part is that if you don't like some of the photos that appear in those mini boxes, you can "x" them and it will automatically change to a new picture. You can continue this process until the photos you want appear in the mini boxes. The only downside that I see when viewing photos now, is that they appear to be smaller. Maybe I only feel this way because of the giant black box the surrounds them.

Student

I don't like the new page, especially the new way to view photos. With almost 600 million users worldwide and rising fast, Facebook would be the third most populated country behind leaders China (1.33 billion) and India (1.17 billion) if the ubiquitous social networking site were to be a country. Thus I think before any change, Facebook should discuss the new feature with its users and then decide whether or not to update it.

Student

I'm not a fan of how facebook keeps changing. Once I finally get used to a new design they change it again. In regards to facebook, I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" belief. What's really the purpose for all these changes? Do they REALLY make it easier to navigate around, because I don't see it. If anything, I believe some of the newest changes make things more difficult. I'm referring to the new way to view photos--- when you click one, it opens up in a black box on the page. That takes longer to load, and is really unnecessary. The one change I don't find to be obnoxious is the ability for page admins to log in as a page, and behave like a person (the ability to like, comment, ect). Aside from thinking that's sort of neat, I'm not a page admin anywhere, therefore I'm not affected. It does get really annoying though when facebook feels the need to revamp itself. Furthermore, I just want facebook to read my news feed, and write on peoples walls every now and then.

Facebook has been making a lot of changes to the website lately. I think they are a lot more interactive and make it much more user friendly. Facebook started as a way for college students to connect but now compaines from Kelloggs to Bike shops have pages. Everyone knows about Facebook and I think it's a good idea that compaines create pages since most people view facebook over blogs and what not. One change that I don't really care for on the new Facebook is the way that you view pictures. It takes up too much space and I feel like I am being directed to another site, not a big fan.

Student

When first looking at the new Facebook pages, I was mad they were changing yet another thing. However, after looking around at the different pages I kind of like it better than before now. Over the summer I was administrator of Via Chic, a luxury handbag line. I interned at a PR firm and my boss invented this line and placed me in charge of the social media. It looks like it will be a lot easier to comment and login as a page, rather than the old way. In the past, it was confusing trying to comment on posts under "Via Chic" instead of my actual name on Facebook. Hopefully this makes pages a lot more interactive and useful for the administrators.

Many companies are coming up with new ways to promote themselves and give rewards to costumers via facebook. I am of a fan of Gap and Old Navy (owned by the same company), and every week they have in store and online deals for exclusively available for facebook friends. During the holiday season, Gap had deals for 12 days if you followed their "reindeer race."  It's a fun way to get excited about a brand, and definitely got me into the store.

I also love to be a fan of my favorite tv shows because facebook always alerts when they have special online content available like pictures, webisodes, and it's always fun to see what other fans are saying about the show.

Student

Unlike a lot of people, this most recent Facebook page update didn't bother me. I think the new layout is clean and more organized. However, some things, such as "mutual friends" & the "view friends" option, I feel could be displayed/organized better. I commend Facebook for keeping up with what people want and helping to provide them with the best possible website. Compared to other social media sites, I believe Facebook's usability is the easiest (maybe that's just because I'm the most used to it). This is also important when appealing to an older audience that aren't as computer-savvy. Facebook isn't just for college students anymore, so it has to appeal to a mass audience, which is why I believe these changes do happen & are necessary.

Student

I definitely am not a fan of all of the "new facebook" updates they always do.  I too understand that they have to change and adapt as time goes on to attempt to become more user friendly and whay not, but I feel like theyre doing too much.  I definitely liked it a lot better when your page was simply your wall with just the wall postings and such on there.  Rather than now when it's your wall and a bunch of pictures and a bunch of links in a less organized manner in my opinion.  Also I don't like how the status option is not even there anymore it's now just a basic wall post on your own wall? Doesn't even make any sense at all that they did that...  And the slide show for photos is possibly the worst change I've seen facebook make thus far.  Literally the ONLY thing it did was add a black background to make it look bad and then opens another window so you can't continue on with whatever you were doing while the picture's open.  As always I'm sure I'll get used to the new pages, but strong dislike in my opinion for sure.  On the contrary, I do like how you can now have like a full chat room essentially with all the members of any given group.  That is extremely helpful for organizing things for group projects, spring break, greek week, etc.

Student

I'm surprised that Facebook didn't put an announcement at the top of our pages to let everyone know about this. Yes, I know that everyone probably has figured it out, but it's still nice when they let us know about changes. I personally liked the old way of viewing photos, but theres nothing I can do about that now.. I have been looking at the pages and I don't see a difference in them.. I'm not sure why or if I never paid that close of attention before... Maybe it's because I don't have a page that I'm an admin?.

Student

I guess the new Facebook pages do provide better functionality, it's kind of cool that the admin can have the page comment on other pages. However I do not think it is going to make a huge difference. For me personally, I am a fan of like 20 pages on Facebook, and I never look at any of them. The only time I am affected by the pages I am a fan of are when they update their statuses, but even that gets looked over most of the time. Most pages I just looked at are not complete enough for the new layout to make much difference. If they do not have pictures the profile looks nearly the same as before. However maybe with the new features people will be more motivated to fully complete and utilize their pages.

Student

I usually like using Facebook to look at the pages of new movies comeing to theaters. These pages usually give me all I want to know about the movie. They say what the film is about, who is starring in it, when it comes out, and much more. It even lets you buy tickets for the films. You can always get up to date information and new news releases through the Facebook page too. There are also usually contests or fun games to participate in which help fans get more involved with a movie and the more involved fans are, the more excited they are to see the film when it is released. Overall, Facebook just sums everything I want to know about a movie before it hits theaters; it is a great one-stop-shop to get all the information.

Student

Facebook is constantly changing and I feel as if they started doing that around Junior year of college. I don't remember them constantly changing the page layout this much when I was in high school or even beginning of college. I mean the changes don't inhibit me from using the site and are quick to learn about but what bothers me is they change privacy settings without you knowing example making information more public. But the new photo viewer is really cool. I honestly don't really look at facebook pages unless there are announcements in my news feed from them. Thats what I use twitter for. Following my favorite people. As a result, facebook pages aren't in my everyday action. I just checked out the NMDL page and it seemed very informational so I just might have to start viewing that page a little more often!

Student

Call me a Facebook snob, but i hate it. I hate the way it looks, I hate the slideshow feature, I just hate everything. I don't like reading a paragraph (for some) at the top of the page. I just want my information, no superfluous pictures or information. I'm that person that waits until the very last minute to update my profile. I'm waiting for the day when we all have to have our email set up through FB (what's the word with that anyways?). The administrator feature sounds nifty for all of you...administrators.

Student

I actually have never looked at the new media drivers license page until today, but I thought the discussions and slideshow tabs were pretty cool. There is a lot of information provided on social media in addition to information about the class. Some of my favorite pages on Facebook are some of the companies that I like. One of them is Blackberry. Whenever they have a new update or some kind of change in software, I am notified through their Facebook posts and can easily find the link to their website so I can make updates to the software on my phone. I also like the page for Rafael Nadal. He recently has been posting pictures from the various tournaments he plays in and tennis related events he attends and other updates. These pages are pretty well made and they make it easy to keep up with your favorite companies. It's nice to see that the new media drivers license page has so much great content. After this class is over, I will likely frequent the page to get some tips on social media for work in the future.

Student

I had no idea they made changes to the facebook pages. I think facebook does not do a good job of announcing new ideas and things added to the website. I know that recently they have added features such as "sponsored stories". These stories were not announced and they use peoples likes and statuses to make advertisements on the side bar of the site. If you like going to Starbucks you may be the new as for your friends page. I usually like pages based on my interests such as music and sports. I like to follow a lot of my favorite artists and TV shows as well. I have not looked into the NMDL pages.

Student

I don't like how the window pops up to view photos. It adds an extra step for me. I now have to close out of the photo when I'm done viewing. I feel disconnected to the rest of the page, like I've opened a new window to begin a new task. I do believe the photos are bigger than they were before, which is nice. I guess it's also cool to have them in a slideshow format surrounded by black, too. It's more like you're looking at a photo album.

Do you mean, if you started a page on facebook, you can now sign in as an admin of that page, but not as your personal self? Or is this for more professional pages?

Student

I agree. I'm not a fan of how they changed the photo settings. I liked how they were on the page and now they open in a new window.. I'm not sure why they did this because I do feel that I'm disconnected from the page as Elizabeth stated. What is the purpose of Facebook changing all the time? They need some consistency in their site.

Student

Once again, I'm starting to get used to the new Facebook changes. I feel like as soon as I get comfortable with a new layout they change it up on us again. However, I do like the new photo viewer allowing you to continue browsing through pictures without losing your initial place. I'm not a page Admin for any pages but I can imagine how beneficial this has been to those who are, being able to give input and common on other business' pages is always great for companies.

A few pages that I "like" on Facebook and enjoy keeping up with are INTERNSHIPS@STATE, retail pages and a lot of my friends business' or hobby pages (Photography, T-Shirt Lines). I think these pages are extremely helpful for people to get their word out, especially for small business hoping to gain exposure and popularity. This world of social media has expanded the opportunities immensely for both business' and people. With Facebook continuing to make their changes and improvements, they are only continuing to benefit us as consumers.

Student

Only when you think you made your peace with Facebook, another storm of changes come. Although new improvements are always good and welcomed, making fan pages look and function the same way as a Facebook page is not desirable by everyone on Facebook. I considered pages on Facebook to be more professional and act more like in a business setting way to differentiate it from the Facebook page. What struck me as odd is that Facebook had made numerous changes on its platform even though no one is complaining about the existing one. As a matter of fact people complain about the frequent and surprising changes Facebook makes and that people have to adhere to without any objection. One might ask why are these changes being made and to whose interest? Do these changes add any value to Facebook users? Are people using Facebook differently because of these changes? Who is really benefitting? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for making the internet a better place but did people using pages on Facebook ask for this new wave of changes? I wonder what’s it going to take for the founders of Facebook to be happy with their product as is. I personally like the Adcrafter page just because I get to see the events and pics.

Student

I think that the new changes to facebook are great because it opens up to more options and if you have noticed the older fan pages they were mostly boring and not very attractive so it didnt get the attention of the people that most people that had fan pages wanted. This will open lots of other people to facebook, but at the same time some of the other changes like the picture viewer might push them away I feel we should have some kind of say so in the changes that they do make.

Student

I didn’t recognize the changes until I saw this post. The changes are great, and I do agree with the opinion of many other classmates that more functional changes in Facebook help companies to better communicate with each other and with the customers. I really don’t have a favorite Facebook page, as I feel like all the layouts are quite similar, while different content attracts different interests. However, I do believe that updating frequently and changing the page to make it more customer-friendly will make big differences on getting traffic to the page.

Student

Being an Admin of a Facebook Page, I got an email about the change. I think it was for the best since they made everyone recently change their personal profiles and it easier to just be on one (semi-) standard page set up. The new profile is very sleek and I love how you can link YouTube to the Facebook page now. I can't wait to play around with it now when I go to work on Monday!

Student

Having a Facebook page is essential to internet marketing and digital PR. It really helps you connect and interact with consumers, therefore building brand loyalty. Some of my favorite Facebook pages include Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and (of course) New Media Drivers License. I really like these pages because they are constantly being updated with valuable (and current) content. They keep their Facebook "fans" engaged by either allowing fans to post pictures and/or comment.

Student

I really like the new look of facebook...especially for businesses. The new look is more user friendly and is more visually pleasing because of the way pictures are laid out..you are greeted by human faces instead of a generic web address. I also really like how easy it is to connect to all of the the other social media sites that a particular organization may be a part of....like the youtube icon on the sidebar...its right up front so people can click through. The new look also feels more organic and less stiff. Good job facebook...whats next?

Student

Trying to keep up with social media is a huge task to take on, especially when sites such as Facebook are constantly updating and changing.  Even though it takes a little bit of getting used to, once adjusted to the new layouts and options, it is easy to realize why these changes took place.  The new layout to view pictures is very convenient.  It allows you to click on an album, scroll through, and then once exited you are redirected to the exact point on the site you were pre-picture visit.  I completely agree that Facebook is the place for businesses to be, especially those that are new and growing.  The population on Facebook is bigger than some countries- therefore providing an instant outlet of a guaranteed massive reach.  So although sites keep on changing, it seems to only be for the better.

Student

As a facebook user, this is really good news. sometimes I felt some facebook pages were hard to contronl and didnt work for me. now I like the change and it is much better. But I didnt check the change on facebook page yet. I will enjoy the huge change~~~ so exciting!!!!!!

Student

I like the new facebook pages. Yes, it can get quite annoying that they have new updates for the pages all the time. However, I think it is great that facebook keeps on changing the options for the public. They are keeping the pages up to date and helping to keep everything fresh on the pages that are there. I feel like the more they update it the more they are catering to businesses.

The facebook pages that I like the most are the retail stores. I follow a lot of retail stores on Facebook and it is good because they give away coupons and make you aware of their sales. Facebook has really started to cater to the business side and make it known that they have their page out there. It gives them the opportunity to make their stores more well known than before.

Student

I'm not an administrator to any Facebook pages, but I have to agree with most that the appearance is much cleaner and easier to navigate through. As far as my personal Facebook goes, I was so scared to see it changing, but have embraced the changes. I love the new "See Friendship" option. The pictures on top of the Facebook pages is really nice. It allows people to see what you, your business, or organization has been up to recently without searching for it! These new changes get more information out to whoever's viewing your page easier, which I think is a good thing.

Student

I love the new design on facebook. I've been exploring and as someone concerned with privacy, I loved that all of the pictures that show up when viewing your profile page change according to who's viewing your page! I also love the new layout for looking through albums, it reminds me a lot of iPhoto and is much more up-to-date! As for fan pages, having not been an admin for any, I really can't comment on those but I do love the new layout and how easy it is to access everything in one spot!

Student

Never being an admin for a group or fan page I am very unaware of the different things you can do with these pages.  As a facebook user I am a fan of many pages, but even though I'm a fan of a lot of different celebrities, activities, etc. on facebook I rarely visit these page to gain information.  The main reason I fan pages is so these pages show up on my facebook info. to let my friends see what I'm interested in.  For example in the past if I wanted to see what going on with the Pistons I went directly to the source nba.com/pistons and not to their page on facebook.  For my personal facebook page I believe that I have built it up as much as possible and I do like some of the new features, but I do not like the new way photos are viewed on facebook.

Student

I completely agree with you Andrew. It's way harder to vew photos on facebook and I use (or don't use) facebook the same way as you. I feel like facebook is sucumbing to the pressures of other social media platforms and has lost its focus. I think facebook should view photos the way they were before and let you mention an interest in something, like the pistons, without having to link it directly to the pistons fan page on facebook.

Student

I always dread facebook page changes when that warning shows above that you should check out the new facebook or it's coming soon I cringe. Now that I think about it I am not sure why to be honest I guess sometimes I just like things to stay the way they are. However, I do feel like the changes that have been occurring with facebook, especially the pages, are wonderful. I don't go on facebook as much as I used to but I do enjoy wandering around through the thousands of pages and reading what people have to say. My personal favorites are music pages one in particular is the Elvis fan page. This is because ever since I was very young I was a huge Elvis fan and reading quotes and articles people post on the page are things I find to be incredibly interesting. I know I have tried to find good quotes from many artists and sometimes the best place to find them are on the facebook pages because wandering through quotes sites can be useless and sometimes completely irrelevant from what you were actually hoping to find.

Student

My favorite Facebook page is the Official Detroit Red Wings page. I like it because it keeps me updated on what is happening with the team without me ever having to go to sports news sites or even the red wings site. They also update me on special events and promotions. Without their updates I would of never known about the student rush program, where with a high school or college id you can get 15 dollar tickets to wings games. The new facebook changes are nice I like having those pictures up at the top of the page. I've looked at the Dexter page before and have even been playing a game they put up. But I haven't ever looked at the other page that is liked by the new media drivers licence.

Student

I think that the new facebook pages are always great. They are constantly changing which can get a bit exausting but they are more innovative and user friendly every single time. Finally, Facebook had started using text boxes that pop up to give explainations as to where the new features are located if you click on something that may have been from the past features. I think that is extremely beneficial because most facebook users aren't computer saavy, they just enjoy using facebook. Also, while being in this course, I discovered the Facebook Blog which is Facebooks official blog. This gives you detailed explainations of how to use the new features and layouts, and even sometimes there are videos to show you specifics.

Student

I have never been a big fan for new facebook designs, altough I know it has to change from time to time.  This change is really annoying to me because I don't really want to have so many things displayed on the pront page.  It was only wall posts and friends on the side (and some trivia about you) However, now they have pictures and more stuff, all at once.  Sometimes i have trouble understanding hheir new functions such as the slide show picture view funchtion  they added recdently.  It's very annoying that I have to close another window just for looking at pictures, and it doesn't make any difference except the background is black...

Anyways, we'll see how facebook can improve it.

I loke the page of Ingenex! I like the color and the pictures placed on the front page.  If we all have great pictures like that, it wouldn't bother that much.

Student

Not being an admin on a page, I did not realize they had made these changes until I read the post today. The changes look great and they are now more in-line with users profiles. I think this adds to the cohesiveness of Facebook and keeps the brand consistent. In addition, I thought it was a great idea that they decided to implement these changes after they had switched over everyone's personal pages, I believe this probably made for a smoother transition on the admins end. Appears to be much more user friendly and sleek looking. I am excited to see the next innovation Facebook is going to bring about.

Student

I checked facebook new page now. It is pretty awesome page. Actually I am not active facebook user. I just check the people's comments or photos when I got update email. So I used around 10 mins per day. Therefore, I did not interest about the facebook design and functions. But I wanna make new my page after this changing. Especially I interested this new page when I checked new media drivers licence course page. And I realized again that Social media is more important in our future. In this semester, I am taking four advertising courses. Every class related in Social Media. So I have to check my client company when I gathered clinet's company informations. At that time, I realized it is more powerful and useful. Therefore, they need good functional new pages like this changing. Therefore, I will make some new facebook pages or upgrading my pages. Let's do this.

Student

I had no idea that the pages had changed. I think it is awesome that they are doing the same thing that the profiles have. At first when the new FB page changed for my profile I really didn't like it because I kept hating the photos they preselected for me - and then I had to keep clicking the "x" to get another one, but still it wasn't one that I really wanted. But now the new profile has grown on me and I have been using my FB more and more. I think that the pages upgrades are awesome. They definitely help add more of a face to a company or organization which is great!

Student

Wow. I had no idea about this until reading your post. Thanks for the insight!

I currently intern for a non-profit called Greater Lansing Area Clean Cities and one of my tasks is to handle all of our social media outlets. This will make communicating with people who follow our page so much easier. Before these changes, I felt like admins had limited use. You couldn't comment on any other Pages and liking other Pages was confusing (whenever I tried previously it would "like" it under my individual account). Finally, Facebook made a quality Page upgrade.

Despite this advancement, I absolutley hate the new picture format. The black background is obnoxious looking and I don't like how it pops up. It's just an additional thing I have to exit out. As far as Facebook has come, I think they need to consider their users in the decision process because some of the formating seems a little odd when navigating. At least now they give you a tour of the upgrades so you're not in a state of confusion when you log in to find everything out of it's original place.

As an individual, I haven't really kept up with many Pages. I think it gets pretty rediculous when someone likes a million different Pages. If I decide to like something, it's because I actually have interest in it, not because I've wasted hours browsing pages to like.

Student

Although I'm an active Facebook user, I haven't noticed any changes in them since I don't really have any favorite Facebook page. And, obviously it'll take time to get used to the new stuff, but it's a good thing that it has become easier for marketers to use. I just noticed that I've got 6 page suggestions on my Facebook, so I think I'll check out the new Facebook page.

Student

After reading this post, I had to go check out the facebook changes for myself...very cool! Actually, because of this class, I'm working on bumping up the social networking power of East Lansing's Pita Pit by working on their facebook page and twitter. (Thanks Derek and crew, I probably wouldn't have thought about it if it wasn't for you guys!). But as an admin for the facebook, I love the new changes. I think it's great that you can function on facebook AS your business. Maybe this will increase traffic between businesses as well as businesses to customers. Great changes!

Student

I agree with you, Bridget. It seems that Facebook is making strides to be more functional for businesses to operate and customers to interact. I would like to know more about what you are doing for Pita Pit and if you think that our text has been helpful in guiding your decisions. There are times that I think Scott is just talking to people without any sense of what new media is. Because our generation has been predisposed to new media and are unfamiliar of the internet without it, do you find his "advice" helpful, or follow what you think is right?

Student

I agree that it is great how we can now login as a page not just a rep for that page. It makes it a more personal experience with the company instead of dealing with people answering and interacting for the company.

One of my favorite facebook pages is the MessageMakers company page. They are located in Old Town Lansing, MI and I interned for them this past summer. They are great to follow if you love creativity and being involved with the community. They are always involved with Old Town events, they are also involved with the Addy Awards each year and are continuously posting different links that explor creativity. I like being informed and exploring their content.

Student

Since I'm not an admin for any Facebook pages, I didn't notice all of the changes they've made. It's great that they're making things easier for marketers. Allowing admins to log-in as their page and comment allows for a new level of interactivity between a company and its consumers. You can communicate with them directly, as the company, not as a PR rep from the company. Way to go Facebook!

I love major retailers Pages on Facebook, like Target and JCPenney. They sometimes offer great deals that you can't find anywhere else!

Student

I really don't think I have a favorite Facebook page. One of the reasons being that even though everyone is different and there is different information on their Facebook the layout is more or less the same. I think that there is a lot more opportunity for people to expand their Facebook just like the New Media Drivers License has. What sets people apart on Facebook is their logo, and the content that they have on the site. If they have little content not many people will go on it. If you have a lot of content that is useful people will definitely use their page.

Student

Like anything, it always takes time to get used to new things.  I was hesitant to upgrade my facebook profile at first, but in the end I was happy that I decided to.  The layout is much more functional than the old layout.  Also, it is easier for people to learn more about your business by looking at your company’s page.  The layout makes it easy to navigate and find the information you are looking for.  I had stumbled upon something called the “Oudin Profile Generator,” which is a tool that resizes and crop images to make a cool picture with the top 5 pictures on your profile page.  This is a cool way for you or your company to stand out on facebook!

Student

The new changes are great, especially because they compliment the recent changes everyone has had to their profile.  By now people should understand how to use their new profile and be able to use the new pages with ease.  I like the option as logging in as a page to comment on other pages, it gives local businees an opportunity to advertise for each other and create business for each other.  I dont really have a favorite Facebook page, but i have helped my dad create one for his business.  I received an email last week that the new pages were going to be effective this week and I think it will be much easier to navigate and there are more options for monitoring.

Student

The changes for the new pages are great. The look and feel are very inviting for interaction. In addition, groups have changed as well. It's also easier to interact with groups now that you receive notifications to your sidebar. The online Facebook community is already so integrated, and these additions just improve communication among members. Another new feature that I like (although I am still getting used to it) is the new "viewing" of pictures. Once you click a photo that is from an album, it opens in an entire new view that allows you to scroll through instead of just hitting "next". It has a modern and sleek look that adds to any members pictures. Facebook is always tweaking and fixing minor things that in turn, keeps them on the cutting edge of social networking. No site has come close to what Facebook does and I believe it's because of the ever changing and ever growing community that it has become. I can't wait to see what new things come next!

Student

Although I agree that the new pages is appealing, I've noticed that they've changed "groups" as well and have left some pages out. I was recently added to a group by an admin which is a very new feature, and I now get notifications on the sidebar about new posts to the group. Finally, groups have a purpose! Once I joined a group, I rarely ever went back to the page and seldomly got inbox messages from the group. Now, I see when there is new information posted, just like Twitter tells you when there are new Tweets. On the other end of the spectrum though, I've noticed that some pages haven't made the transition yet. My "interest pages" are still structured under the old format and don't have the appeal of the new pages format yet. It's odd to me that facebook would transition some, but not all. Maybe they're doing a slow roll out like they did when the entire layout changes occured recently.

Student

I think we have a clear consensus that the new Facebook pages are a hit! Being able to log in as a page to post comments is really the biggest change to me. While the new format looks nice and clean, the new level of interactivity is what is so cool. Unfortunately, not everyone adapts well to change. For instance, I am working with a non-profit for another class and the Facebook administrator was beside herself because she thought all of the pictures had been lost with the new format. With change comes some growing pains, but I really think that this was long overdue.
