SEO and SEM are in play when you think of Google+ and how it could impact search results for users. When people +1 an item on Google now, it can show up in your Google+ stream. It can also show up to your friends as a site that you like. What does it all mean?
Will the +1 metric really impact search rankings, or will it simply impact your network? How will Facebook Likes impact search ranking, and will Google even know if you Like a Facebook page since they don't have a close relationship with them?

I am still getting used to Google+. I have not figured everything out on it yet and i'm not too sure how much an impact +1 will have compared to facebook. On facebook when you like something, it normally just affects the networks you belong too. If you see a bunch of your friends liking something, you'll go click on it and see if you 'like' it too. This may have an affect on ranking only if enough people do it all around the world. It seems for google if you +1 something, it is affective for people all over not just people in your circle. +1 I think helps move up the rankings, so if you +1 something it will be more likely to be in a search engine. I have not seen the advantages of the +1 yet, but i see where it could be beneficial if it affects the rankings in a search engine compared to facebook, where it affects your immediate circle.
I think the +1 metric will impact only my network. If I +1 something which is similar to liking something on Facebook, I feel like my searches would just reflect interests in that category. I think facebook likes could impact search rankings because if enough people "like" something, then it will gain popularity and show up higher on SEO or SEM. I think that since you can integrate your friends from Facebook into Google+ they will be aware of a "liked" item and make it show up on your searches. I am not impressed by Google+ yet though. I still don't think there is a need for it and it will not take off like Facebook has.
If the +1 will effect search results and ranking, I think it is beneficial. In that way, it serves much more of a purpose than the "like" button on Facebook. From the consumer stand point, people want to see what is helpful from the opinion of fellow consumers who have experience. They don't want to see the results of the companies who paid to be on top. However, from a marketing stand point I wonder how it will effect SEO. What types of changes will this bring about for the companies who used to come out on top in searches? It will be a true test of whether the "best" is really the best (according to consumer opinion).
+1 is on youtube! Just like the "like" button on facebook, +1 adds an impact. Now I think the +1 is a little different. For the like button on facebook is impacts your network not everyone. You see that all your friends have "liked" something, you are more likely to check it out. For google's +1, I believe it will impact search rankings. Now lets go back to youtube, with the more views you have the more likely it is that your video will show up on a search engine. The more +1's you get its not based on just someone watching the video but actually liking it. I think its a better system for getting results on a search engine because it cuts out the stuff that people watched but didn't care for.
After taking this class, and spending some time trying to better understand social media in an effort to steer my company toward the development of a social media strategy, there are several things that peak my interest. The biggest thing is where does this all lead to, and will there be a sudden shift or backlash? I heard something the other day about speculation that we may experience another tech bubble based on the absolutely outlandish stock valuations that internet based businesses are experiencing lately. It does seem a bit analogous to the original tech bubble where there was an awful lot of hype that drove expectations well beyond the reality of the situation.
I have to be honest about it, I personally wonder if it is all just going too fast. When you get companies like Toyota starting to air commercials about people who spend too much time on Facebook and not really leading normal lives with "the three dimensional people" as my wife likes to refer to interacting with real human beings in face-to-face conversation, you have to stop and wonder if people are starting to see the insanity of it all. I have learned from this class that there is just no possible way to keep up with everything that is happening, all the new aspects of social media, all the new companies involved with options and opportunities for you to take advantage of in marketing yourself or your business. Not even if that is all that you do, 24/7. I have to believe that at some point people will say Enough Already and begin to try and find a bit of balance. The thing that really peaks my interest is which services will survive at that point and which won't. Right now I think that there are too many options and we are all like little kids in a candy store. Pretty soon we are going to run out of money (or in this case time in the day) and we are going to have a bad, bad stomach ache as we realize how far we got off the path that we originally had.
I'm really diggin' Google+ ; it is by far the most user-considerate social network site. After all, no one is comfortable sharing the same things with their parents and grandparents as their close friends or business acquaintances. Humans are far too social to have just one network of people their connected to. (Duh - that's why you can play fun games like 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon!) Someone at Google got it.
As for +1's, I'm not quite sure yet whether Google's plan is to have these ranking affect generally or more specific to each person's circle. If I were working at Google, though (hint hint Marc... really loved the tour!) I would try to create a way for the +1's to work on a whatever way the user would like them to. For instance, see what the U.S. is +1-ing or your state. Your town, your campus, AND for members of Google+ even each of their individual circles! Why not? Filter results through whichever network people want them to be filtered through the find the most pertinent results! That way, you can find the best results for whatever you're looking for. If you want to know what bars in your area are good, check your local filter. Want to know your friends' or your parents' top pick? What about in Southeast Michigan? Filter through your circle or through GoogleMaps.
The best way to keep the public is to entice them with ease and convenience. The more Google can integrate +1's into each customer's life and needs the better.
