Hi, everyone!
Lots of interest in @Klout competition - that's great!
Here are the rules:
We want you to work on improving your Klout Score throughout the semester.
Two students (active NMDL students) with :
a) The highest overall Klout Score as of Nov 11th, 2012, or
b) The highest increase of your Klout Score between beginning of the class and Nov 11, 2012
will be declared winners.
On Nov 7th, I will post specific directions on how you can enter to win (you'll have to send a tweet, with certain hashtag, your klout score (total score and by how much you've improved) between Nov 7 and Nov 11.
I will announce winners on Nov 12th.
Winners will have a chance to have lunch (free lunch) with me at Google's Ann Arbor, MI offices. I will give you a private tour of the office, probably hook you up with some Google schwag (tbd), introduce you to number of my colleagues (Google axecutives, many of them fellow MSU grads) as well as head recruiter (diehard Sparty) for our Midwest offices.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
For now - work on improving Klout Score (make sure to link all social media platforms you're already using, and increase frequency - and quality - of your social usage).
Good Luck!
Mike
Comments & Feedback
When you first talked about the Klout competition at the first session in Novi, I was quite excited about it. I saw myself setting it up and gaining points like crazy, then I realized that I was kidding myself. I barely post on Facebook, and most other sites I have because I need them for this class. This is something that might need to change in the future, but I am just not motivated to put an effort into the other sites when I don't have friends on those sites. Unfortunatly I will not be winning anything related to this Klout competition, but it was very interesting seeing how it works.
Okay so I did a little research on what Klout really is and attempted to educate myself on how to properly build my Klout score. Set up a klout profile and everything now I am waiting for the points to roll in. Still reading and continuing to expound on my knowledge because it is very new to me and I am unsure if I am doing the right steps to improve my klout. My guess is it is similar to a credit score?
Mike, What drew me to read this post was because a recent article I read. The article claimed that the Klout forumla had to changed because Justin Bieber's Klout score was higher than Obama's. This lead me to question Klout's crediabilty. However, after my own research and making a Klout account for my internship's Twitter account, I have come to the conclusion that it is a helpful source of information. Not only to know your own Klout score, but to compare yours against that of other accounts is very valuable information that can help you monitor your progress. Klout was a great idea!
Hi Mike,
I am very excited for this Klout competition. When I heard you say that a student with the highest Klout score gets to have a luncheon opportunity at your office in Ann Arbor, not only I got super fired up, but I was very impressed about how you chose Klout as a tool for us to use for a competition. I believe that many people did not even know what Klout is until you mentioned it, and I think that Klout is such an effective analytical tool for anybody looking to go into Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. When I first got an account on Klout, I only had about 30 and as I started engaging many audiences on social media sites, it started going up and the highest I have reached was 69 and I got really excited. I learned that Klout has encouraged me to find better resources to get more attentions from my audience. I am very excited for this competition. I will work harder than ever and hopefully I get to learn a lot more about my dream company!
Klout seems like such a convenient way to manage social influence. It never occured to me that you could monitor how many people you are reaching. I am excited to use this and actually find out who follows my social media.
I looked into Klout about a year ago and I've been waiting for it to catch on since. I didn't know if it was still a relevant tool. I'm looking forward to this competition, and my score has already increased since the beginning of class.
Hey Mike,
Thanks for the instructions on the Klout competition. I'm really excited to use this form of social media because it is one that I havn't explored at all yet. I constantly feel like I am needing to catch up with the younger generations on new forms of social media, so I'm glad that this class is actually seeming like it will be worth my time and that I will learn something I actually care about! It seems only fitting that a social media class has contests through social media, anyways! Keep those contests coming, and maybe in other forms than just Klout?!
This is great! I'm really excited about this! My starting score was 36! I'd say pretty good so far! Better keep working, though.
Mike, Thank you so much for starting this competition. I've been telling my friends all about the benefits of Klout. This competition has been helping me think about how I want represent myself more through social media while actually talking about things I enjoy with purpose. I've even been looking at the perks section which is awesome. This tool has opened a new world to me and I'm so excited to see how much I can do with it. To everyone in the class, as corny as it sounds, "May the odds be ever in your favor!"
I think this competition is a very exciting opportunity. It is a great idea that will motivate the students to want to get a job with a big company. Before this class had started, I didn't know much about Klout. Now that I have had the chance to get more into it, I am intrigued with this very creative idea. This competition will help our social media interaction only for the better.
Thanks for giving us the explination. I think this competition is a really good way to push us to build up our social network.
Actually, I did not know there are so many social media we can use. Because in my country (Taiwan), people use Facebook the most.
Twitter and klout are not that popular. Therefore, I really learn a lot after spending almost my whole weekend to set up all my social media.
I will try to do my best to manage all my platform. Hopefully, my klout number can get higher.
P.S. I have one question that how I can let my klout score higher? Thanks!
Hey Mike,
Just wanted to say I'm pretty fired up about the Klout competition. I, like several of my fellow classmates, it appears, had never heard of Klout before you spoke about it at the New Media Driver's License Seminar in Novi. I've already taken a screenshot of my beginning score, and am thrilled to say I've already gotten it to increase four-fold! I'm sure I'm not the only one who will see much improvement over the semester, and I suppose I should be embarassed at how low my Klout was, even a week and a half ago. However, I'm going to try to use it as a meter to guage how much I'm able to improve and advance my digital presence throughout the upcoming semester. I look forward to all of the wonderful opportunities this class has to offer, and as someone who has until very recently felt quite intimidated by all things digital, I'm looking at my current weaknesses as being opportunities for myself, in how I can improve my own "personal brand". I really enjoyed hearing you speak on Saturday (9/15), and thanks for the incentive to do well (Google Schwag?? Count me in!).
Take Care,
Allison Wemple
Thanks for creating the competition. I believe this will motivate the class to become positive social media influencers. I was familiar with Klout from a previous class, but I never viewed myself as a person who could create an online community. I am very excited about enhancing my digital influence.
After the first meeting of the class, I am really working hard to increase my @Klout score but I found it not easy to increase it because you need to get people influenced by my social media activity. I recognized that people who are very popular or websites such as INDEED or CB (Career Builder) have @Klout score in between high 70s to 80s. When I saw these scores, I questioned myself that about what score will I be able to win this competition. Hopefully, I can able to increase my @Klout score consistently (which means I have to be involved in the social media activity daily!) and win the prize to go to the Google Office!.
This is a great idea. As someone without a twitter prior to this class I feel pretty good about my chances. This is a great opportunity for some good ol competition for a chance to get a job with a Fortune 500 company. Not to mention, prior to this class I had no idea what Klout was. This class has already taught me so much in the social media world and will be a great tool for me in the future.
This is a cool little positive competition among us students. I think the prizes are quite motivating with career and networking opportunities. I think Klout itself is an interesting idea. I would want to know my social influences on the online community. Do you have any tips to increase Klout score? I wonder if quality of the post can affect the score on top of the frequency of using the media. Appreciate your reply.
I'm really excited for this oportunity, and I've been on Klout for a while now. I'm just a little confused as to how it interprets our scores? Are there certain metrics that it's looking for beyond the obvious?
I am pumped for this competition. It is interesting learning/ using klout. I have never had a linked-in or google plus account prior to class, so I feel I have a good shot at this free google lunch!
I am more than excited for the Klout competition. Prior to our class meeting, I had not heard of Klout. This is one of the reasons I am excited for NMDL. I now have the potential to learn so many things critical to success in a social media reliant society, I would not otherwise have access to.
Since our meeting, I have downloaded Klout and witnessed my influence over my followers and friends. The app makes me want to increase participation and engage in relevant activity, just so I can see my increase in Klout score. I think the competition is great way to get the students involved and actively participating for an extremely rewarding prize.
This is a very exciting opportunity being presented to us! I have not ever used Klout before, so I will be going for the most improved award. The chance to meet the head recruiter for Google can lead to many other potential opportunities. Google has a reputation to be one of the best companies to work for, so it would be awesome to get a foot in the door. The free lunch doesn't hurt either!
I like the idea of the competition. I do not interact a lot with social media because I am a private person. I have Facebook and LinkedIn that I use more regularly but I made a Twitter and Google + last year and hadn’t logged back on till this class. I think it will interesting to see my interaction with social media rise because I will be more confident in using it and knowing what I want to post. I want to see how much others inprove their Klout score as well.
I think this is a great opportunity! I love the idea of a Klout competition, not many people check or even know what their Klout is. I am really excited about the prizes as well, I think the opportunity to meet so many Google employees especially the head recruiter, who I am glad is a diehard Spartan Fan! I hope that I win this Klout Challenage as Google is one of my dream companies to work for!
I am very excited for the Klout competition! Previously, I had only used facebook because I deleted my twitter after barely using it, never knew what LinkedIn was, and did not know much about the uses for social media. This class has enabled me to learn so much more about social media and better ways to use it that I do now enjoy these social media platforms and am excited to keep learning. My Klout score when we first started was a 29, and now after creating a few more social media platforms, it has jumped to 53. I am looking forward to seeing it climb higher.
I also would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation and loved how enthusiastic you are about this class and your job with google.
This sounds like a great opportunity! I've been on klout for a little while now, but never fully understood it's power in the social media world. After digging through some articles that fully explain how one's Klout score can adequately gauge their focial media footprint, I was hooked. I've heard great things about the Google office in Ann Arbor, looking forward to seeing it!!
The Klout competition is a good way for us to be aware of our social media footprint. I found out about Klout last year and was suprised how many people I influenced or that saw my posts. This understanding will help remind us that a lot of people view what we put out on the internet, and to try our best to keep the information quality rather than nonsense.
I am very excited to start this competition, as a frequent user of social media like Facebook and Twitter, I am interested in using Klout in collaboration with Google plus and other media site. Although, I am still not feeling extremely comfortable with all the advanced features of different sites ,I am hoping to improve my comprehension as well as my confidence.
I am so excited to dip my feet into all of these social media aspects. After checking out my Klout score, I have realized that I certainly have not use social media to my full advantage. I am very new to Twitter and have only used it a few times prior to this class. I am still a little confused about all these hashtags but I am slowly figuring it all out. I have recently found a ton of great connections on LinkedIn, everyone from classmates in my college to professors. This will really help me as I am graduating in December. I am working on using social media more frequently in my daily life to become fluent in online communication.
Prior to class, I had never heard of Klout. However, I am quite familiar with Sprout Social and HooteSuite. It's quite easy to understand the analytics presented in these two social media management sites. Users can gain concise insight into social media with a variety of metrics, so I was surprised to see that Klout uses only one metric to measure social media influence. I'm quite interested in how this one measure of influence is calculated. Is it measured through the number of re-tweets, likes, shares, pins? Does this measurement also include the number of followers, or friends? I read that the higher a Klout score, the more difficult it is to reach a higher number. I’m also curious to see the Klout scores of national vs. multinational companies, and causes like Kony.
The whole idea of Klout and how it measures your influence through social media websites catches my attention and it is interesting. I would love to know how I can increase my score. I have been working on my Klout score since I left Novi last week. I would love any advice from you or my peers on how I can improve this score. This is a wonderful opportunity you have presented to us and I thank you for that and good luck everyone!
I really enjoyed your discussion at the seminar, and before then, I had no idea what Klout even was. When I talked to my Dad about Klout he knew exactly what it was and began to tell me about his Klout score, and how exactly Klout works. I am curious to find out how to raise that score, and will have to do some playing around to get the hang of it. I have always had a minor addiction to facebook, but haven't really explored the other social media sights. Through this course I hope to be able to build a significant presence on more then just Facebook. This is a great opportunity and I would love a chance to pick your brain! I guess I will have to get busy on my pages to make this happen! Let the contest begin!
I really like the idea of this competition. I thought of myself as pretty into social media and fairly "talented" at it (If that's possible). I had never heard of Klout before our class at Walsh. After I signed up on Klout, I realized I am very insignificant when it comes to social media and the internet. I'm really excited to see if I can change my Klout score enough to win the competition! I think this competition will help me get more aquainted with all of the social medias. At least this way I can feel better about wasting my day away on Facebook.
I think that the whole concept of Klout and how it measures your influence through different social media's it quite interesting. I want to learn more about how I can increase my Klout score because I would love to win this contest! I think you have given every student in this class an excellent opportunity to meet with your collegues and learn more about Google. I'm very excited to find out what other opportuities are out there for me through socal media.
This competition is a perfect example of leveraging social media for behavior change, so thanks for the tutorial. I now tweet, and I've interlaced all my various networking platforms into one cohesive social organism. I'm looking forward to more such lessons as the weeks tick past, and who knows... I might even improve my Klout score. Is it just me, or is this little challenge the NMDL equivalent of getting voted prom queen?
I think this is really a cool and interesting idea. I really like it. I am so excited when I read the part that we can visit the Google's office at MI. I cannot wait until the announcing date. I will keep following up the information about Klout!
I really think this is a great idea Michal. Looking forward to increasing my Klout. I do have a question though. Do you think Klout is very accurate in its score and do you think that Klout will be come an industry standard to measure your influence in social media?
To start, I must say, your presentation was probably my favorite. This whole idea of Klout, is very interesting. To be able to track your influence and find ways to grow your score can really help you brand yourself and company and get your name out there. I think i speak for everyone in the class, we very much appriciate the opportunity to meet your colleagues through this competition. I am excited for it!
Richie
I think Klout is such a cool concept - I am interested to see how this site will develop over time. I think it's a really cool way to aggregate all of your social media profiles and see your overall online precense. I am a little suspicious about the validity of their scores, but I think over time that can be improved too. I hope I can win the competition!
I am excited for this competition. I never would of thought I had to make so many social media profiles but thanks to this class I have made a LinkedIn and finally started connecting with people in my field of study. This competition is sure to help us understand more on social media and just how much we have to do with other peoples thoughts. I tell people all the time about this and I hope that I can increase my score to help me get more influence towards other fellow social media networks.
First off, just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation.
I am also excited about this opportunity, and seeing how influential I can be to my peers via social media. I feel like I am already starting to be more efficient in the way that I am using my social media. Can't wait to see the final Klout scores.
I am in agreement with my fellow classmates on this...what a great way to be interactive with others while sparking some competition. I had never heard of Klout before this class and I am definitely interested in the website itself, as well as how I can benefit personally and for my future career.
The idea of Klout is emerging and pretty fresh; however I would definitely like to know more details about how to improve your Klout score and rather more effectively.
I like the idea of the competition it forces you to do something good for yourself and then you can win something additional. I am however frustrated with Klout already or maybe I expect too much too fast. Within the first three days my score made a 21% increase and have joined other social media since then made many connection on LinkedIn but my score won't budge. Any ideas anyone? I also realize that social media is a full time job and one that exposes you. It's time consuming keeping up with all these sites when you have 13 credits, two jobs and an internship and in order to be active it requires you to put yourself out there quite a bit. Is there a section of the class that teaches about balancing social media and your everyday life?
I am also excited for this opportunity! If you have any suggestions on how to bump up my Klout score, that would be helpful!
I think this competition is fabulous! I can't wait to keep building Klout in hopes of winning this wonderful opportunity! I find that as I mess around on the Klout website and read more about it I am finally starting to understand it! Thanks for giving us a chance to win something great!
This competition added a little bit more spice to an already fun class. Nothing wrong with a little competition!
I have looked and cannot find how to enter for this contest. Any new information would be great! Dont want to miss out on this oppertunity.
