Local search is an increasingly important component of search engine optimization. Building links that help your local search is a smart tactic, and something that will help if you want to be found in your town, city, or region.
I just read a post from our friends at SEOMoz that talks about acquiring links from local search. We do many of these techniques, but it's good to see someone write it up in this manner.
Take a look at the post from SEO Moz.
Curious what approaches you like? Any ideas you could see implementing for yourself or one of your clients? Good material for your toolkit. And I suggest SEO Moz as a resource. We use them for much of our search engine optimization research and planning for clients.

Although the process of SEO is still confusing to me, the further I dig into its use, the more I see how you can really push your content to the top of the internet world. It appears me that there are many different ways to reach your audience using SEO. You can narrow down your SEO placement to geographic areas. If you are a business near a large university, or college town, you can use SEO to reach the closest, largest, market for your business. Personally, I enjoy when I see clever pitches on a local business page, especially business in East Lansing.
It's crazy how SEO's are becoming more important, and the things SEOmoz said about commenting on local blogs is great. It's easy, simple and can be fun if you don't turn into one of those spammers that only care about getting your links out there. And it's interesting to see that guest blogging for a local, niche blogs creates higher outreach than other guest posts.
This article has been very helpful for me in defining ways to extend the reach of your blog, while at the same time it does not only emphasize ways to gain more readers overall, but locally as well. This blog shows that many people ignore small, local markets, and if you are starting a new blog, targeting these people can help you gain customer that big wig sites might miss. This article also tells me how beneficial being a guest blogger is, and in the future when I am looking for new clientele this is a good venue to take, because although these people might not be looking for exactly what my site has, I may make an interesting comments that piques their interest and makes them loyal to my site, referring it to friends and buisness clientele alike.
The SEO Moz article was very useful because it gave a good view on ways to optimize my blog while using local regions. The tip I liked the most from the article was to post on other blogs of people in my region. Being involved, and influential to your local region is very important because it obviously popularizes yourself, but it helps out your local town as well. Attracting more viewership to my blog would be very helpful because local businesses and readers would be attracted to my blog and bring even more people to my blog.
It is interesting to read about how important SEO is becoming. This post gave helpful information about adding links and more techniques. I like the idea given by SEO Moz, about commenting on local blogs without spamming. This is a fun and easy way to get involved and get your opinion out there. I could see myself implementing this approach.
I did not realize that being a guest blogger makes a huge impact. I also didn't know that people spammed while commenting on blogs just so they get their link out there. I like that when being a guest blogger do not spam to just get the link. You want to add to the conversation and bring something of value. I could implement this idea to make sure I am commenting with substance and value. Not just trying to get a link. People would respect the comments more and invest their time into my link.
I really liked how much information it gave me about how much impact a guest blogger can have on blog traffic. For example a guest blogger can bring in different people who werent necessarily looking for exactly what your blog offers them but you then spark an interest with them!
After reading this article i now realize how much of an impact a guest blogger can have on someone's blog page. It can bring traffic from different people who are interested in that type of blogger and in turn they can get interested in your page. Also along with guest blogging I can now see how local businessed and companies could benefit from SEO's. This could be a great way for anyone to find out about their companies and actually get them noticed by people that aren't so close to the community or have never heard of a certain business.
I like the fact that Matt Green found that the success rate for guest post outreach on local niche blogs is higher than the average guest post outreach. It sounds just like how successful you can become depends on what types of and how many connections you have in your circle. If you find good connections and influential bloggers that are efficient in boosting others' businesses, it is totally worth reaching out to them to get a help from them with marketing your small local business.
Similar to builiding a social presence online, it is important to build a social presence locally. As mentioned in seomoz.org's post about Buliding Tactics to Improve Your Local Rankings, I learned that search engine optimization can be affected more than just your presence online, but also by your presence in your local community. For example, I work for a student organization on campus at MSU, The Student Alumni Foundation. While we might have a social presence online as well as in the immediate MSU community, to gain even more interest, this article has gave me some ideas on how to exapand our presence in to the East Lansing community, which is also local, to get even more interest and engagement. Tips such as commenting on local businesess blogs and even having guest bloggers from the community, seem to be reasonable ways to get the community involved in our organization as well as showing that we are interested in others out in the community too. Although we do not have a blog, connecting to local businesses via social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, via hashtags and direct messages, I think we could effectively increase the interest around our community and get more people wanting to learn more and engage more in The MSU Student Alumni Foundation.
SEO is extreamly important for getting traffic to your website. Family friends of mine own a small family business in a small town, however, they have people order goods from their store from outside of the country. This makes me questions how these people found out about this small store and why they would purchase from them rather than a store that is inside of their own country. Their SEO must be highly product specific and easily found by others by internet searches.
After reading this article, I now can see how guest blogging has a big impact. I was skeptical on guest blogging at first. I didn't really think that it could be beneficial at all. After reading the article, I can see that it's a great way to spread not only information about your organization or business, but also the keywords so that it's easier for people to find you and what you're about. Having a guest blogger also helps gain more publicity because the people who follow them on thier blogs are most likely going to check them out on your blog too. I've come to realize that blogging can be really beneficial to a company or organization.
I find the post about guest blogging to be very interesting! Before this seminar, I honestly had no clue whether the author of the blog was the real author or a guest blogger whenever I came across blogs. I tried that with our class blog with someone that I found to have great style with their blogging, so I invited for them to be a guest author, which brought great attention to my page. I think the local search on blog search engines makes it easier to find other guest bloggers out there for me to invite for future guest blogging.
After reading the article I see how beneficial it can be for businesses and bloggers to gain a presence in the local community. The tactic I liked best was commenting on local bloggers post. It is a great way to get your company out there and it will help make it easier to find. It enables your business to gain more viewership and customers to learn more about it.
Local search is very important because it allows you to monitor quality and quantity of inbound links to domain and domain authority, as well as from locally-relevant domains and links to places landing page URL.
Really useful tips about SEO! I have already applied some to my own blogs. The only question for me is where can we find the change of search engine rules done by Google, since lots of the recent tips may have to be adjusted due to these changes.
This article provides a nice outlook of ways to gain exposure locally. I really admire the idea of giving back, through scholarships and clubs, as getting involved with young kids can undoubtedly be beneficial for both parties. People throughout communities will see the impact your business is having on yong talent, and in turn will share your information with more prospects. The other techniques are definitely good to keep in mind since starting locally is a great way to build your recognization in your given region.
I think this is an interesting topic because from my perspectives, the essence of marketing in this age is "two I": interaction and integration. Integrating online behavior with offline behavior, integrating search engine and LBS...they all have huge potential for business possibilities.
I think SEO is a win-win strategy to companies and users. Companies use SEO as a high standard role to make their search engine better and fit the requirements of users; users get benefit directly from the better search engine, they can find more information which fit what they want. On the other hand, SEO also increase the standard level of user’s ideal search engine, that makes the competition of search engines also increase, and it is more difficult to make a better search engine.
I think local search is important because it adds variety and be more targeted to specific locations. It's particularly relevant for long tail marketing.
I think local search is very important becuase it is a way to "localize" your wensite. In marketing perspective, localizing is the one of the key elements to be success in a foreign market. In this point of view, a internet business also needs to be localized in order to get awarness from local people. I think the easiest way to do is to get engage to the local blog. Just like in my country, Taiwan, blog is very popular. Therefore, many international cosmetic brands want to get into Taiwan market, they will try to send the free samples to those famous cosmetic bloggers and asked them to share their experiences about the new-coming cosmetics. Since those bloggers are kinds of "opinion leaders" for young generations (which are the target audiences for the market), their words are very influential. I think it is the most efficiency way to do the global social media marketing.
This article really shows how important search engine optimization can be, especially to local businesses that are stuck in the shadow of chain stores. I thought it was was cool how he emphasized adding value to your community in everything you do. I think more small businesses should be focused on maintaining an engaging blog.
This article was very helpful because it gave a good perspective on ways to become influential in your local region. For a new blogger like myself this is very important because we need to get our name out there and the best place to start is right at home. The tip I liked the most from the article was to post on other blogs of people in my region. This would be very helpful because then their local readers would see my posts and potentially view my blog thus creating greater viewership for my blog.
I think this is beneficial for both customers and businesses. It allows small business to effectively advertise their businesses. By providing testimonial about your experiences, it is not only helping the local businesses, but also helping the users to pick the right business for them. However, there is a risk of fake testimonials. Since anyone can leave the feedbacks, there is a risk that owner of one business can pretend to be a customer and leave positive feedbacks on their own website or leave bad feedback on competitors'. However, overall, I think it is a win-win resource.
I like the idea of guest blogging on a niche blog. This can make your company seem like an expert (I am relating this to the good old days of guest gaming on the original Nintendo system- circa 1995. If someone wanted you to be a guest gamer, you must've been really good!). This is a great way to draw the right attention to your company because viewers of a niche blog who already seem to like what you're all about. You'll gain new fans and some respect in the industry at the same time.
The approach that stood out to me was to create a scholarship for a local school. This is a great way to position your company as socially responsible, while actually helping someone in the process! I would have never thought of that. There are so many different ways to promote this including on your website, the schools website, social media sites, and yes, even a news release! I thought this was really creative.
I like the idea of Local SEO link Building because it encourages community development. It creates an interconnected relationship between local company and the residents. It will definitely create some loyalty to the business that supports local groups and organization. It is almost as if it turns the tides. Now company have to be actively seeking our business buy actually helping out the community. It does also help to procide some free media attention as well which if done right could get statewide attention and increase SEO.
This article is great! I think it is really important in the grand scheme of things. If you want to start developing your brand, weither small business or from the ground up, starting local is a great way to build momentum!
My favorite approach that I like in this article about building tactics to improve your local rankings is to give testimonials to local business that you love. Whether you live in the same town as your favorite local restaurant, or you are an out-of-towner and find the great hole in the wall restaurant, all companies love to be bragged and boasted about. I think the easiest way to implement this as a local business would be to create a blog of some sort where customers can leave messages about their experience at said restaurant.
I too have never really known much about local search, or why it is important to care about it. It is interesting how the article points out that you want to obtain links that your competitors won’t be able to get. This will ensure you have the competitive edge when it comes to inbound traffic. Great read
I like the use of a local search engine. I use it to search for food places, gas stations and other things when I am in an area. This is a great way to promote a local business over a popular brand business. It is also good to have the feed back since it is important to companies for improvement. Leaving tips and comments are beneficial to the local business. I really enjoy the idea of sponsoring local highschools or organizations for a great way to get into the local community.
I found that this article on localizing SEO was very beneficial for local businsses to get their name out there. It has many interesting tips that they can utilize to make their brand stand out from the rest. I really liked the approach of partnering with the local community and sponsorships, it creates a ton of opportunities and is mutually beneficial!
This article is very interesting and helpful. It is important to know the local optimized results for brands and business. And also people can build brand awareness and public relations.
Local search is a topic that I have not really put that much thought into until I read this article. I feel that local search is a vital component in researching target markets. There are many statistics that companies can gain and benefit from local searches. Local searches also spread the word on certain businesses, especially local, small business. These searches also rank places making it easier for people to analyze data. Overall, I think using local searches is beneficial to companies and will overall increase their business traffic.
The article talks about giving local businesses you love testimonials and how it can help them build their business. We all have those small businesses we love and go out of our way to buy from, so why not go out of our way online to help them? Reading this was a great way to realize how much power we have as consumers online.
Interesting read on search engine optimiation - I really liked the ending thought, "In everything you do, add value to the community by being engaged and thorough." I think that community is everything and people like to feel a part of something. I think that by creating keywords or phrases to build your search engine optimization can allow for people to start to trust and rely on your posts. I have already used strategies like commenting on blogs, guest blogging, and giving testimonials. I don't see myself using strategies like creating a scholarship or sponsoring clubs, although it is useful information for the future!
I feel that commenting on local blogs will really help your local footprint. Commenting on things that tie communities together and getting involved can help make connections with local business and possibly leaders in the area. This can let you discuss things in your industry and tie in your business to the local area.
Local search as a component of search engine optimization is not something I'm entirely familiar with, even after reading the article. However, I can see how it can be important in a world where stores like Walmart and Target are taking over the smaller, local stores, and McDonald's and Taco Bell have hurt some smaller non-chain restaurants. Local search is important to keep some of the smaller outlets alive. For instance, I use FourSquare on a regular basis and frequently search for places near my current location. I then read the tips, view the pictures, and sometimes, even write a review myself. I believe this kind of local, viral marketinging can help the less massive companies and organizations make a comeback.
Interesting stuff here. Clearly creating content that is more focused on an audience geographically will allow for some awesome opportunities. Great to know the best ways to optimize content for local link creation.
Using local SEO links is great for niche audiences. For example, mom and pop restaurants can really use them to target their audiences.
Previously, I hadn't realized the importance of establishing an online profile in a local community. However, not only is it highly important, but this article highlights some relatively simple ways to help build a local audience. This is absolutely essential for the profile of a local business--this allows them to directly interact with their target audience, and to reach people that haven't even come into their business yet.
I think this article is interesting. All the ideas seem basic and easy, but i would not have thought of them. I too will be moving soon and would love to get my foot in the door as easily as possible. Starting a scholarship seems a little far fetched for someone like me, but again its an interesting idea that i would have never thought of. This article just get you thinking about all the possibilities you have as a professional in a new place.
I found this articleto be very helpful. I am going to be moving soon to look for a job and it is a good scouting tool to use to make sure that I can make connections in a new town. If anyone has every been new somewhere this is a good tool because it also lets you get what you need to know quicker because it saves time.
As the Director Of Marketing for local (Lansing) Tech Consulting company, I’m always looking to increase our local SEO presence. It’s extremely valuable to note that SEO doesn’t just have to be a global wide Google competition, but can be utilized to enhance your local presence and gain new clients in your area.
Linking is an important task as it helps drives traffic to your site. You can link anything to anything and it will alow you to grow in size. People will see links to your site and use the keywords in links to look you up on google. This will help you will gaining new followers by using links in the voice of teh comsumer.
I really like how the article talks about networking with existing resources in the community. I think that too many companies and people try to create totally new resources when in fact it would be better to better to use the existing infrastructure. When companies and communities work together, the collective impact is far greater than if each were trudging on alone. In my current job I would like to create more local awareness and plan on using advise given in the article. I would like to network with businesses so that we can mutually refer each others services to others. In this way I can tailor who I want to associate with and who will be most beneficial to partner with.
I found this article to be pretty insightful as to why local search is an increasinly important component of search engine optimization. I like the give testimonials to local businesses that you love approach. Given that we are all in a social media class, we know how important to use of feedback is - and social media and blogging are great components to make this happen. Offering links that allow people to give their own opinion on your business or product will give the local community an idea of what your products all about. Though this could mean you may get negative testimonials, it will help your local business improve.
I really like the idea about sponsoring local clubs or groups at highschools and colleges that do things relative to a business, organzation, etc. Community involvement is important to majority of consumers so it would be a fool-proof way to get a local company awareness within their community by supporting local schools.
I agree! Companies and business around my hometowns highschool always were sponsoring local clubs and organizations.
I feel that using SEOs is perfect for increasing your impact locally. I found it interesting how having guest bloggers isn't as influential on SEO than I originally thought, although it still does make an impact. I feel that I could use this advice to create external links to my blog and increase its ability to come up on searches.
