Meerkat and live streaming video

Have you used Meerkat?
If you have an iPhone or iPad, check it out now. This new livestreaming video app has been one of the hottest new apps since it was released earlier this year. What the app lets you do is post live streaming video from your phone in a very quick and easy way, and to watch livestreams from your friends.
Meerkat ties in with Twitter, so whenever you start broadcasting something, a link automatically goes out to your Twitter followers notifying them of the live broadcast.
Since the app rolled out at SXSW, it's become one of the most talked-about apps online. I tried shooting video of my English bulldog Dingell with it, and wound up mentioned in a VentureBeat story on watching strangers on Meerkat. Admittedly, shooting live video of a dog is kind of lame and not the coolest potential use for this service.
So: what do you think would be a cool way for online marketers to use Meerkat? Tell me what you think in the comments below. What do you think this could be useful for? Can't wait to see your creative ideas!
Comments & Feedback
I honestly have not heard of Meerkat prior to reading this post, however it sounds like something that could definitely catch on during this day and age. The fact that it is tied into Twitter is a pretty cool feature in my opinion, as well as important to the overall success of the app. With Twitter being one of the most used social media sites, especially during big, national events, this connection between the two applications could play a huge role in terms of broadcasting and coverage. In addition, marketers could use Meerkat for special promotions and releases. For example, they might take a live feed from a huge shoe release and post it on Twitter. This could initiate people who are very interested in new sneakers to go out and get themselves a pair even if they weren't planning on it prior to that, due to seeing how crazy and exciting the scene may have looked via Meerkat. All in all, this sounds like a pretty cool app and i'll be sure to keep an eye out for it in the future!
I had not even heard of Meerkat prior to reading this post, but as a result of this post, I did check the app out. It seems like a really cool idea with lots of promise, except I feel like not enough people have heard of it yet to really be worth marketing on.
I think if it grows enough, it could be useful for broadcasting events. It could allow more individuals involved with events and could spawn bigger and better event. It would allow people from all over to "experience" the event. I am picturing something similar to snapchat stories, but it would be permanent and could have a bigger following.
Overall, I think Meerkat would have a huge benefit to celebrity publicists. They could really utilize Meerkat to help restore or promote celebrity's images by having videos showing them being normal human beings. By having celebrities use Meerkat you could also use a lot of product placement, and then use the video to start conversations about the various products, so marketers can have more control over what is being said about products.
I think the use of this app could be very useful in customer feedback and questions. You could host live broadcasts where you could answer questions submited and more. This could lead you to create a big online discussion that occurs live. This could lead you to show the consumer how to fix a product they may have purchased, helpful tips and tricks, along with many othe things to make the consumer happy. Good customer service is what leads to someone coming back to buy your product multiple times and this is what leads to your success. If you could then use the livestream to stay connected with your audience, this will make them feel confident in you and create a relathionship with them. A weekly live stream could keep you connected with your audience and help you build a connection with them.
I have never heard of meerkat before but it seems like it's more like the apps keek, vine and snapchat you can post live streaming videos from your phone in a very quick and easy way. But I'm going to to give it a try and see what its all about. So far snapchat is my favorite of them all.
All in all, I believe this is a cool idea. Personally, I haven't used the app (and probably won't) simply because it doesn't seem useful towards my everyday activities. In a larger sense of celebrities, scientists, artists, etc, I think it's beneficial and could be extremely helpful when trying to broadcast an event, tune an outsider in, or teach someone something. It's definitely an exciting method of getting peoples attention, at the exact time you want them to, which is pretty cool. On a smaller and personal scope, I barely watch any Vine or youtube videos, let alone post them, so I don't think it would personally be useful to me.
First off, I think the fact that your video was mentioned in a VentureBeat story is awesome! I love anything with fur and four legs so you got my attention! In regards to online marketers using Meerkat I think it would be cool if they would video what they are working on or what is happening in the work place-- the latest and greatest projects. I think it could be useful to show viewers a behind the scenes look of what is happening or what will be happening soon to come. I think it will get people more excited and it gives them something to look forward too.
I've actually never heard of Meerkat before this blog post. As an outsider I am curious what sets it apart from vine. I think it would be useful for marketers but I'm not sure if it would create more views than say snapchat discovery. I think the world of apps has become more competitive and marketers need to pay attention to what is a fad and what will get more views.
I have not heard about Meerkat. It sounds to me like Vine, but I believe it does have a lot of potential. If it becomes even more popular, I can see it really being a bit hit for marketers. This could be useful for big sporting events (Final Four..GO GREEN), music festivals, and concerts. If I downloaded the app, that's what I would livestream, personally.
I heard about Meerkat's huge debut at SXSW this year and, it intruiged me (like most new social media apps and sites do,) so I had to look into it. After doing some reasearch I found that there is a similar app to Meerkat called Periscope that has been on the market for a little longer. From what I've read, the main difference between these two apps is that Periscope allows people to watch your "live" streamed videos for up to 24 hours after shooting them, while Meerkat is simply a live stream. While both of these apps are interesting, I find it hard to see myself using them personally. Like you said about your dog, there is not much in my everyday life that I would feel compelled to video tape on a live-stream. Also, if I were in the middle of something "video worthy" I don't think I would want to focus my attention on taking a quality video for people watching the live stream. I would want to be engaged in whatever is happening, maybe snap a few pictures and worry about uploading them later. However, from a marketer's standpoint, I can see how this new technology would be a unique, fun, and new way to engage with people. At a large company it would be easy to integrate this type of marketing into a social media manager's position. If it is someone's job to seek out interesting and relevant content to video tape on a live stream, then it would be easy to get enough share-able content for your brand on one of these apps. Specifically I think it would definitely be useful for events like music festivals, 5K's, and award shows. (Although Snapchat already does something similar to this.) Another way brands could use this is encourge their employees at fun companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook to take live-streaming videos during the workday so people can get an "inside look" into these brands.
Meerkat is new to me. I have never heard of it but it seems a lot like the app Vine. I use to have a vine but it didn't end up being that interesting to me. I'll see if Meerkat ends up being any different.
I have never heard of Meerkat but it seems like something that a lot of people would enjoy. I feel like it's very similiar to Vine. I don't find it that useful when there are so many other video sources of media that could take its place such as youtube, vine, etc.
This app could be very effective in social marketing if used correctly. Brands such as truth can record real people following the behaviors they endorse and post the videos to show that people are already making better social choices and it will help make these behaviors the norm and therefore get more people to follow it. It can also be used by atheletic brands in posting clips of undicovered talents performing while wearing their brands. Similar marketing can be used for food and beverage products as well.
For internet marketers, it can only help to be one step ahead of the game. Meerkat seems like an excellent way to go so. People love sharing, the popularity of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and other social media has shown this. If Meerkat gains momentum it may become a sensation, one which marketers can most certainly utilize. Even simple things like shooting videos of your dog can become very popular, you just have to get creative!
I didn’t know about Meerkat. I am just surprised that I haven’t heard about this amazing app. I think Meerkat sounds very interesting so I downloaded it and started looking up. The app sounded like very interesting, but it’s just a mixed version of Snapchat and live streaming. To be honest, I didn’t like the app as I expected. But still, that is a very good app. I think it is good to share people’s videos and have comments about videos. In my opinion, it is a good idea for online marketers to use Meerkat for advertising. People can see the video and also comments.
Oh man, where was this app during the Cedar Village Bagel Fest of 2015?! While we were all "rioting" after the big win for MSU that took us to the Final Four, this app would have come in handy. With everyone taking videos it would have been much easier for them to stream directly to Twitter for easier sharing. I'm sure the State News could really benefit from this app. They were on the scene covering the entire thing, taking video after video and then uploading them to their Twitter account (as was I). I think the app is really cool and has a lot of potential for action news! Chipotle should use this app to surprise people who are waiting in line with free chipotle to random people and catch the whole thing on video.
I bet this would be interesting for creative businesses to use - for instance, it could be an easy way for artists, R&D, interior designers, etc. to show off their "process".
I think Meerkat could be very interesting for online marketers to use in relation to big events, as it is "the next step" up from live tweeting. However, I'm not sure I quite see the use for it otherwise as there's not a way to create quality content that will stick around for audiences to see at later times and no one can create quality marketing content 24/7. I think it's useful for those big events though, as people like to see the tweets that correlate with them, so I'd expect video to take over as the next thing one day - why not today?!
So I actually just learned about Meerkat at work today. I don't really think that I like it. Unless you warn people of the live stream once its done, its gone. I think it could be cool but I would think it would be better to have the live stream and then a post that goes live after and you can rewatch it. I think that of course something like that would come out at SXSW becasue that would be the perfect place to use it. SXSW is amazing, but I am just not sure how it could be used with out adding hype abou the video.
Some things a marketer could use it to for are to promote an item, or a sponser could use it at the even they are sponsoring which woudl be pretty cool. There are a lot of possiblities with the app, but like I said I think the stream should be saved.
I think Meerkat was a great invention, useful for those who either want to see events happening in the moment or who have lives that are that exciting that they want to stream what they are currently doing. Personally I don't think I would use this app, but I think that for journalism purposes it is very beneficial and innovative. People love to know what is happening in the moment, so this will increase the experience of those people and help to get stories out during the situation rather than highlights of the aftermath.
I think it would really cool is major sports teams used Meerkat. Having a live streaming video from inside the locker room after a game, on the sideline during timeouts, or just all around live streaming the sporting event would be revolutionary for the world of sports. I'd be pretty geeked if I could get a live stream of Stafford on the sidelines after he throws an interception.
This is an incredible new way to promote new products. Consumers want to see what capabilities products have before purchasing them, and this gives marketers an entirely new way of achieving this right on their phones. When you have your phone at your fingertips the capabilities of marketers are astounding, and this new wave of technology just expanded resources by a crazy amount. I can't wait to download the app for myself.
I have heard, and also downloaded, this incredible app. I first heard about when Mark Dantonio tweeted that the first football practice of spring was going to be braodcasted live on Meekrat for everyone to stream on their phones. I was so impressed with how easy the app worked and was so excited to watch my Spartans suit up and get ready for another season. I can see this app going very far, as anybody can live stream any shareable moment that they want with anyone. I can see this being a big success at music festivals, sporting events, or anything else where customers want a taste of the live atmosphere that comes with illustrious events such as those.
I think Meerkat is a pretty impressive app, but I will not be using it (simply because I do not have a smartphone). I feel this would be really helpful to marketers because more and more people want to see what new products are coming up instead of just waiting for it, and it builds hype and excitement for it. Live feeds are not used as often as it should be, and this app will help utilize it.
I think that brands could for sure use this! When I heard of it, I thought of retailers and how they could use it for new releases of their lines. They could post livestreams of the fashion shows that the company does to show off their new line and the "behind-the-scenes" clips of what goes into the designing. I think it is a really cool concept and could boost a company's exposure for potential customers who are interested or have heard about the brand.
A cool idea for this would be live leaks from new cars that will be released in the future. Videos could display the car in a race or burning out the tires so that it engages and entertains the followers on Twitter. Meerkat seems a bit like Snapchat but it's difference is that Twitter followers can view it. Therefore, it's a great way to market online with this app because of this feature.
I feel like this is a really cool concept for an app. I think that brands could definitely harness this, but I'm unsure about personal use. I probably wouldn't use it, but I could see some brands doing great live promotions with it. Instead of posting about a convention, concert, or big event they're attending, why not show their followers a live feed of it? Bands could potentially use this for behind-the-scenes work. Live streams of them shooting a new music video, going into a dress rehearsal, or greeting their fans on the way into a concert venue would be really interesting, and would make the fans feel more involved if they can't attend things in person.
I am surprised I have not heard of Meerkat until now, but it seems like an innovative new way to get people connected. I think marketers could look into creating short teasers of their current or upcoming commercials that would give their customers a small look into what their next campaign will consist of. Each video should encourage followers to visit their website to see the rest -which could lead to more sales.
I think Meerkat is a cool idea and its amazing how much technology is shifting. I personally probably would not use Meerkat because I see no use in it as of right now. I was the same way with Instagram and now I am obsessed so I'm saying "probably" in a very light way. It would be a cool app for concerts or even sports events for the social aspect. This app has to appeal to a host of people such as celebs in order for people to engage and use it. I never heard of it until today and I think I am pretty "hip" when it comes to new apps and technology stuff. Many companies could use this app as a way to bring in new customers and market to their target audience.
I have never heard of Meerkat, but when I downloaded it and started playing around it reminded me of a new other social media apps that I currently use. (snapchat mixed with comments and live watching I suppose). My first use of this I was watching this woman sing to herself and talking about spiced rum, so I'm not quite sure what the purpose of this app is. However, I get how it could be used for popular brands and companies, even celebrities. I feel like if a company designer or someone with high value to that brand were to live stream themselves and answer questions that fans of that brand it could have great potential. (maybe this already is a thing, again I'm not sure because I had no idea what this app is prior to a 30 minutes ago). I think it also could be great for celebrities to use, and answer live questions that their fans have for them.
I feel like this is a cool idea. I haven't used the app and probably won't. While I said I think it's a cool idea it doesn't really serve much purpose for me as I lead a relatively boring life and don't feel like anyone would benefit from watching anything I could stream, haha. I could see how for journalism the reporting of events as they happen in real time might be beneficial. This seems like an app that would be suited for news and celebs. People always want to see and know what celebs are doing. As for average folk such as myself I wouldn't likely post, maybe watch other people but definitely not post anything through this app.
I have not used Meerkat. I could definitely see benefits of using Meerkat in on-the-go reporting or other journalism applications. I personally do not see much of a use for it personally, but it could be fun to use at events/concerts or something to that effect as well.
I think this app could be really useful for showing in-the-moment videos from marketers at special events companies/people are having. With the live videos, people will be able to see what is happening as it happens, as opposed to highlight videos after the fact. This could really increase the likelihood of people attending these events if, for example, they last for a weekend, or to attend the event in future years. I think it will also be useful to increase demand for future years, as viewers will want to go because they'll know what it's like from seeing it happen live through Meerkat.
I think this new live streaming app is really cool for sporting events or concerts. Tickets can get really pricing to major concerts or games like the final four, so this app is really cool because its almost like your there with your friends or total strangers, without actually being there.
What is cool about Meerkat is it seems to be a hybrid of Twitter and Snapchat.. which I both use on a regular basis. However, sometimes I feel like new social media apps are really just the same as the last.. but maybe this can be used to an online marketers advantage. What is different is just about anyone can watch what you are streaming, unlike Snapchat which is soley friends based.. and I'm sure when this app becomes more popular it will be used for many different things such as posting videos of special events and popular world news.. Right now I think the app just needs to figure out how to get more people to use it, and then it will be of advantage to online marketers.
Aside from the fact that people can survive without telling everyone what they're up to, this could be really cool for companies. Especially those that have live events that could be streamed live. Car companies could show their products live, as could musicians, cooking platforms, and news programs. I think this could be a really interesting place to see a "behind the scenes" atmosphere of industries that have a following. I would love to see a news program live streaming from behind the camera. To see what it takes to put together a news show would be extroidinary.
Meerkat sounds like a very good app. I have not heard of it until today. I have been a big fan of snapchat and twitter and this sounds like a combination of both. I download the app just out of curiousity. I did not have very much luck finding fun things for me to watch. Once this becomes much larger I believe that it can become one of the greatest social media sites around. For that to happen many famous people will have to join and young kids to make it popular. Also many business people can use this. It can be use to live stream a meeting or a product unveiling. For example, Apple could have put there new watch unveiling on Meerkat and the number of viewers could have gone up.
This post is quite ironic, because I downloaded a similar app yesterday called, Periscope. Periscope does the same exact things, and I feel that broadcasting yourself is going to be the new Instagram. But I also feel that Snapchat does the same kind of things. I love Periscope, its highly entertaining but also quite creepy in regard to the fact random people can see watch you.
Meerkat gives companies a great platform to promote their live events. With streams in real time, everybody can feel like they're a part of the action-- even if they're across the globe. It's also good word-of-mouth advertising because consumers can post live streams of themselves using your product. This stream will automatically be tweeted out to their followers, allowing for a greater reach for your brand. This also gives consumers a way to share what they do/don't like about the product. Meerkat would be a great tool for a new business in the introductory phase of the lifecycle. It would allow a brand to inform the market that their product can satisfy their needs.
I dont use Meerkat nor know much about it but the app seems pretty cool. Live streaming has become more and more popular and I know that some people have even made livings out of it. I think that it could be pretty interesting to watch someone live stream their lives and it could make for a cool documentary. Thrill seakers could use it before skydiving or before bungie jumbing. It could also be used in very simple yet educational ways such as in classrooms where some students are unable to attend class they could watch from home, or even undersea exploration trips. Clearly there are alot of cool ways to use such a simple app.
Use of Meerkat could hold numerous possibilites for businesses around the world. I think that linking meerkat to some sort of aerial drone could hold a whole slew of possibilites. The drones could provide live feeds on events, product trials and other possibilites to get a completely different view on things in real time. Meerkat could be great for drone manufacturing companies as well, taking viewers for test flights in far flung places around the world. The use of meerkat has great possibilities in a number of industries.
I have never heard of this app before, granted I also don't have Twitter so I'm not surprised. I think it is a great way for marketers to reach their audience because the app notifies their followers when something new is posted. I can see this being very successful, because I am someone who hates have notifications on their phone, and would check anything just to get rid of it on my phone. This could create a lot of traffic to each video posted.
This app is definitely very interesting and could be very useful for a brand during a product launch. It could be used to build hype and as a way for the audience to get an insider perspective, similar to how Snapchat has sponsored stories for events now. I think more and more apps like this being used shows how we are moving towards more authentic, personal, and live content than the prepared news stories of the past!
Until now, I have never heard of the app, Meerkat (great name/app design though). I don't really see myself currently using it, but I think it is another excellent way for marketers to reach there Twitter followers. It reminds me of the apps Vine and Snapchat, but much more efficient for businesses that need to be reaching a social media clientele. I love that with Meerkat you can retweet them out. Other than Twitter I have never seen this function and I think it is an awesome and very beneficial way of creating brand awareness.
I personally had never heard of Meerkat until this post, but it seems like a mix between Snapchat and Vine. Because every video you make on Meerkat is posted to your Twitter account, this is a great opportunity for online marketers to reach their Twitter followers in a new way. The live videos are real time, meaning marketers can post relevant up-to-date information in their videos. Marketers could use Meerkat to promote flash sales or have special deals for those who see the video. While this app allows marketers and users to creatively share videos, it seems like too many promotions sent via Meerkat will just appear to be more advertisements on my Twitter feed.
Before reading this blog post I have never heard of Meerkat. After playing around with it for a little bit I can see how this would be a useful marketing tool that big companies could use and benefit from. This app is an easy and quick way to reach a mass market and since it is also instant it helps inform customers about the service or product being marketed. With our generation I can see this becoming something that we would quickly become interested in and start using. It seems to be similar to Snapchat, which is already a big hit. Since it is another form of social media I think it would benefit a lot of companies if they used this app in order to target younger generations who rely a lot on social media in order to advertise their service or product.
I have never heard of Meerkat until this blog, which surprises me. After reading about it I instantly thought of snapchat. I think it is really cool that it is livestream though and feel this would be a cool for companies to use as a marketing tool. Especially for big events like New York Fashion week, designers can live stream some of their big events like the fashion show. They can show exclusive footage backstage as the fashion shows are going on.
Real time social interaction is very important and now Meerkat allows online marketers to engage with their audience in a human and transparent way. Using meerkat is very cheap and easy for companies. This app can build active communities for followers and allow them to share things which gets the video out more. You can go live quickly with this app and if you have a fan base they will greatly appreciate watching whatever you have to share. This app would make great use for advertisement.
I am shocked that I have never heard of meerkar before you posted this blog. I am very happy watched the video learning more about it. I think this could be very useful for companies. It is an easy way to reach bigger markets so quickly. The fact that is shows instant videos helps the customers feel they are better informed and can know more about the prodcut or service they are interested in purchasing or using. I believe tha online marketers and digital agencies could benefit from using this. I am definitly going to look more into meerkat and tell my friends and family members about this. There are so many different apps that are avaliable and very useful today that people do not know about, and this is one they should.
I have never actually used or even heard of meerkat before this blog. I think it is great because i instantly thought of snapchat while reading what this app does. Companies are recently getting on the snapchat bandwagon and I think meerkat could be super useful for companies. Events around the world have snapchat and it would be great for companies and events to start using meerkat to reach a bigger audience. Showing instant videos makes the consumers and audiences feel like they are exclusively getting information about a company before the public because most people, our age at least, are always on some form of social media and not always checking cnn or bbc websites. Online marketers could defintely benefit from sweepstakes and contests using meerkat.
so now in 2017 i have not herd of meerkat. This is a really good example of an idea that was ahead of its time. Now all of the major social media platforms and auto sending notifications notifying your friends that you are now live. It shows you that even when you are first to an idea that if not capitalized on properly you could lose out to a competetor.
