Does this list surprise you at all? How many of these accounts do you follow?
You might notice one thing in common with all these accounts: they all are big brands or widely known organizations. That said, not all big organizations have wildly popular Twitter accounts, which begs the question: what makes these accounts unique?
Why do you think these accounts are so popular? What are they doing right? What can we learn from them?
I can’t wait to hear what you think – and look forward to engaging with you in the comments this week!
Comments & Feedback
I was not surprised when I saw this list, I followed most of these accounts. These account are big social network accounts, including sports, social media, TV contents thats why they are so popular.
Actually, I am not a steady-user of Twitter, and I use Facebook the most.
This result was surprising because twitter has this variety of brands.
It is kind of irony because twitter has a Facebook brand even though it is a competitive brand.
Is Twitter doesn't get any negative opinions to Facebook or Instagram?
This list does not surpirse me! I personally see YouTube, Instagram, Vine and ESPN the most on my timeline on a daily basis. I think these are the most popular because lots of my followers post links to videos from YouTube through their tweets. Instagram has lots of followers too because most people who have Twitter accounts also have an Instagram account and most of the time they are linked together. I also think ESPN is successful because they have a large audience that enjoys to get updated with their favorite sports. Most of these companies have the main priority of satisfying their consumers, which makes them so succesful.
The list does not surprise me at all. The only thing that does is the fact that Facebook is number 12 and not any higher. I do use a lot of these accounts. However, I am not a youtuber myself. I definitely watch youtube videos but I haven't uploaded any on my own account. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Vine are an everday thing for me. I without a doubt am a huge social media fan!
This list of the top 20 companies on Twitter does not shock me. Being that Twitter is a well-known and massive social media network it also provides as a gateway for its users to talk and engage about these other social platforms above it. Also some companies that ranked above Twitter have been established longer and have had a solid and steady market since.
Great articles!
I do think that it is strange that both youtube and instragram are above twitter. However, that being said this list does not suprise me. I am now just getting into Twitter (because you guys are making me) so I do not follow any of them. That being said, as a new person to the Twitter world I feel as though I would cling to these brands that I know. I would be more willing to follow MTV because I know that channel and I know that product. I also think that places like UberSocial offer specials that we use when you follow them. I think what makes it unique is that they have someone creative in charge of the account. From personal experience I know that businesses do not pay much attention to social media unless someone is specifically in charge of writing something each day. I think that is what these companies are doing right, having someone in charge posting items that get people interested in their product.
The main thing that surprised me was that YouTube and Instagram are above twitter. this seems a little backwards and sad for twitter.
I think what is making these brands different is their interaction and target audience being more directed toward people that use twitter. Largely millenials. One examps is the NBA whom is very obviously trying to stay relevant and doing a great job.
I think their content is mainly what is important. People want to know what they have to say and are interested in whatever they are posting. I think we can look to these brands to see how they are moving forward with their posts and what new ways they post engaging content.
I was definitely surprised to see some of these brands on the Top-20 list. Some of the brands make complete sense, such as CNN Breaking News and the New York Times. Others come as much more of a surprise. From my own experience, I can't recall a time that I've ever seen YouTube post anything to Twitter, or have seen any of my friends or followers Tweet or Retweet anything that YouTube has posted. I don't associate Twitter with YouTube at all - when I'm on Twitter, I'm looking at Tweets...when I'm on YouTube, I'm looking at videos. It also surprised me that CNN holds two of the top 6 slots, and got me wondering how different the two accounts could be, without overloading followers with too many news stories. Sports teams and leagues holding several of the top-20 spots makes sense to me, because Twitter has so long been a platform for people to discuss their favorite things, and sports is obviously a huge passion for millions around the world. I personally only follow two of the top-20 brands, and I'm wondering what I am missing out on. Ultimately, social media is about sharing things that are of interest to yourself and things that you think will be of interest to others, and these brands have captured that idea, and have succeeded in generating a massive following.
While looking through all the lists, I was not surprised at all. All social media brands in my head were definitely listed on this post. I am somewhat very surprised how Facebook is actually not listed on the top of the page, but YouTube does! While learning about social media in every classes, influences by social media is more than huge, and each social media brand is connected and communicating each other. I am curious how this whole world of social media will take a place in the future. Such as, coming up of a group that establish and manage all social medias as an element in a group will be an exciting idea as well!
I think these accounts are popular because thet all have something in common, They connect people with other people or information. The saying is "What's in it for me"? This goes hand and hand with these brands and how they market their service or product on twitter. Google, ESPN, CNN, BBC, NBA connects people with quick news about sports, breaking news, world issues in the matter of a second. Facebook and youtube connect people with other people quickly. People want fast news and twitter has become the place to get that information. The accounts that produce the news people want are the most popular.

I'm actually not shocked that these are the most popular brands on Twitter. I would say that I follow a majority of those accounts listed. On my Twitter feed, I see a lot of YouTube video tweets, Vine tweets, and a wide variety of the others listed. However, there are some on the list that I haven't really heard of or noticed on my Twitter feed. For example, Ramalan Indonesia and A Googler.
Furthermore, I think a lot of these accounts are so popular for many reasons. I think the sport organizations on Twitter are extremely popular because people like to see the most recent updates and see what others have to say about their favorite teams. In addition, I think YouTube and Vine are very popular because people love to see funny videos posted on their feed. Overall, I think all of these accounts are successful at attracting their audience by posting the right content (given the organization) that their audience wants to see.
This list of brands most popluar on Twitter does not surpirse me. Twitter users are constantly tweeting and generating content from popular brands like these. ESPN for example has a large target audience of men and women interested in sports (mostly men). Sports is an extremely controversial topic and therefore recieves rapid feedback post sporting events. Instagram is a no brainer as to why it is the second highest on the list... People who have a Twitter account are almost guaranteed to have an Instagram account, and vice versa. Many users will link their two profiles together, so a picture they post on Instagram will show up on their Twitter account as well. However, out of all of these account, I honestly follow zero. This is because I am not a strong user in Twitter. I do have an account but I rarely use it. Which explains why I do not follow any of these large brands.

This list really doesn’t surprise me much. I have been active on twitter for almost 5 years now, and I have even seen the rise of these brands, as well as the fall of many others. The top 3 are no surprise, they are pretty much the biggest social media sites out right now, and have been since the decline of Facebook. The next few being news sites actually makes me feel a little better about our generation. Especially with the increase in very controversial issues happening all around the world, these news sites on twitter have become a main source of news for people.
I personally follow 11 of these accounts. The majority of these being other social medias, or news outlets (world events and sports, news). These accounts are unique because they are all convenient, communication. Whether it is someone communicating a personal picture or video to their followers, or a news station communicating world events, these brands get information into people’s hands, who are on the go and need their news fast and in real time.
This list doesn't really surprise me. I don't follow any of these on twitter because I don't really use twitter, however I know why these all would be the most popular. What they all have in common is they are brands where you can get news from. Whether it be world new, sports news or daily celebrity gossip, these accounts are the best ones to gain access to the news and also when following them, it gives you first access because you get it immediately when you check your phone. With our generation constantly on the go, I feel like these accounts are so special because they can give us the information we want even when we have busy lives to take care of.
I think what makes these accounts unique and valuable are the information they release. CNN Breaking News for instance; a lot of people follow this account to get accurate news the quickest. If CNN shows up on their timeline it might be a followers way of staying up to date. ESPN is the same way; anything that happens with athletes or in the NFL or whatever, it shows up on ESPN, and that's why they have so many followers. I think that's the bottomline as to why these accounts are unique, they disperse valuable information people want to know about and that's why they are so valuable. You could have a huge company- bigger than ESPN and YouTube, but if they can't disperse interesting information to their followers, they aren't as valuable.
Honestly I'm a little surprised by the list released. Part of me is, part of me thinks its a little odd. I checked out the YouTube twitter account as soon as I saw that they were listed #1. What surprised me is that yes, this company obvously has a huge following, its a crazy popular site utilized by almost everyone... but their twitter account isn't anything to write home about. The company tweets consistently, but each tweet doesn't get nearly as many retweets or favorites. I guess I'm comparing to celebrities who get double or triple the attention than YouTube. What I also noticed was that YouTube doesn't engage its followers; what I mean is there are no replies to it's followers and no tweets that ask questions with replies to their followers. That's why I'm surprised they are listed #1. When I think of the most popular brand on social media I'm picturing an account that's super engaged with its followers and asks for feedback and asks questions within their tweets. I guess when it comes to what YouTube is doing right is, well, they already have a huge following. Almost everyone has watched a video on YouTube, listened to music, or started their own channel to upload and format their own videos. So to me, that's what they're doing right; they have a built in fan base.
As I was writing my previous comment regarding YouTube, Instagram and Twitter, I realized I might not be as involved in social media as I thought I was… Out of this Top 20 list, I only follow about a quarter of the listings. I suppose I take part in the group that utilizes the Big 3 listings, and I’m on them religiously, but I don’t really find myself logging into much of the others. Yes, I log into my Facebook and vine account, but they aren’t apart of my everyday media usage.
I was never a huge World Cup fan either, so that weeds out most of the Spanish social media, nor am I an avid sports fan in general, so I don’t necessarily follow many sports accounts. Granted I love playing sports, I don’t follow many professional leagues.
What did in fact catch my eye though is that fact that listings 8-10 have the place they do. I do know there are many soccer fanatics out there but it’s surprising to me that they overcome the amount of Facebook followers. Everyone and their mother has Facebook account. Interesting!
The most of the names on the list didn’t surprise me, but one thing I feel wow is the No. 18 rank of Samsung Mobile. I thought Apple is more popular than Samsung (maybe I was wrong). From my opinion, the main reason of why those accounts are so popular or as a twitter user, why I would follow those accounts is that, all of them are very famous brands and everyone knows them! Once I start signing up a social media account just like everybody else, I would first follow the biggest and famous accounts because they are basically where the majority information sources are from. Another reason I think people choose to follow the biggest account on twitter would be finding the common topics with others. Because of the huge amount of followers by those accounts, their posts become the most popular topics which people are talking about daily. So that twitter users would choose to follow those big brands and widely known organizations in order to know what’s going on with the world.
Not surprised with the lineup. YouTube, Instagram and Twitter are definitely the top contenders in the social media world. I find myself almost every day searching YouTube “how tos.” As much as I Google questions for quick answers, I feel YouTube does a great job providing step-by-step analysis for tasks. Heck, when you Google a question, some of the top suggestions are links to a YouTube video!
In regards to the runner ups, people may argue that Instagram should be placed below Twitter, but it has every right to be placed where it is, and followers prove it. I’m browsing social media constantly, and I do find myself on my Instagram a noticeable amount more than I do my Twitter. According to an article in Forbes Magazine, 65% of the US citizens are visual learners. In other-words, more than half of Americans process information by what we see. Although Twitter does contain multiple types of media, Instagram is essentially all media. Another explanation of why YouTube is number one!
That list is really interesting to me, I probably follow about half of that list. I think for some big brands dont have as big of a social media pressence as other because they dont see it as important as other do. I think having a big following on social media is really important because it automatically promotes the brand without having to put a specific ad out there. Social media is so big for so many people and jsut scrolling through twitter will make people see their brand every day. I think organizations who have a big follwoing on twitter are definitely doing it right!
I think this is pretty accurate and didn't surprise me in the slightest, especially with Youtube being number one. I feel that these brands are more able to branch out because they make the right business deals. Just the fact that Google bought Youtube is a perfect match: the most used websearch buys the largest video search website. I think the best way that we can learn from this is to look at what is the most referenced in todays market in magazines, books, movies, etc. By doing this, we can pair up what other accounts would work best or what would not work so much. I also believe that major corporations know how to work social media and are not afraid to use it. They want to understand it instead of being afraid of it.
This list does surprise me, I would not expect YouTube to be the top account on twitter. They are very popular and have been around, but I feel like recently it is not as popular of a company.
I think that these accounts are so popular because they have been around so long. It would be hard to see a company that is new on this list. I also think that because most of these companies are world wide, they automatically get more followers then others.
I would have though more brands would have been on there. There is not really any thing that is a consumer product that you buy. Most of them are companies or websites. I find that pretty interesting. I also found it interesting that there are things such as Ramalan Indonesia and Twitter en Español. These accounts are so targeted to certain people, but they are still so popular.
All in all, these are very interesting companies on this list. I would be curious to see how these companies change over the years.
I believe that the top six brands are right where they should be. It makes sense to me that YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter are the top three because these brands have a consistent culture and language in comparison to twitter itself. Therefore it is easier to read and interact with. Numbers three through six don't suprise me either because news and sports are always changing. There is always an update to be made and twitter fits as the medium for people to get the information they need and fast.
I follow the top three accounts on twitter. I am not surprised by the top three twitter accounts because that is what I see when i scroll through my twitter feed. I also find it very interesting that soccer accounts made it on the list. I play soccer for MSU so see this on the list excites me. I am surprised that SportsCenter is not one of the top accounts on the list. I see sports center on my feed all the time because most of my guy friends are obsessed with clips of game and top plays. Number 20 on the list is Ramalan Indonesia and I am shocked this is on the list. I don't even know what this account is about. After seeing the list, I am going to follow most of these accounts because the are the most popular for a reason.
I was kind of surprised by the number of Twitter followers Facebook and Instagram have. I personally don't follow either on Twitter because I don't really see the point. After reviewing both of their Twitter accounts it appears that they're both using their accounts for advertising. Instagram has posts about popular, interesting, and cool accounts to follow while Facebook uses Twitter to highlight new features and host Q&A sessions. I think these are smart tactics to keep followers engaged and increase numbers. I wasn't as surprised by how many news accounts had a lot of followers. Twitter is becoming a hub for the most recent news around the world. I happen to follow quite a few news accounts such as Vice New and CNN Breaking News. I do have to mention that one of my favorite Twitter accounts is Chipotle's. They are engaging, funny, and provide excellent customer service via Twitter. I have mentioned them numerous times in tweets and they are so quick to respond kindly. They also advertise deals and update their customers on the latest news about the restaurant chain. Some things that all of these accounts have in common frequent tweeting, unique content and use of hashtags. These are some tips to make a Twitter account successful that I think the majority of the top 20 Twitter accounts have used.
This list does not surprise me at all, not only because I have seen a list like this one before - but because the top accounts are consistenly there. I think that these accounts are so popular because they engage people as opposed to force feeding them content with the intention of gaining likes/retweets. Retweets and likes still are not as powerful as starting a conversation. Also, public figures use these top accounts as well and enndorse Twitter, Instagram, etc. People are also now using social media to read the news - and now interact with the news using comments, likes, etc. Overall this list does not surprise me, and I would bet that it remains like this for a long time.
I'm not surprised that the big brands are the ones that have a lot of followers, because so many people have Instagram, YouTube and Twitter accounts that all the sharing that goes on between them would make each gain more followers. I personally only follow 4 of these accounts and am shocked that Facebook wasn't higher up in the list! I believe these accounts are so popular because our generation has grasped onto YouTube, then Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and so forth. The high contenders on this list were and are currently still fads that our generation is into. They have all incoporated each other in their databases, like Instagram allowing you to post it to Twitter, Facebook and so on....which is what keeps them all on top in my opinion. We shoudl learn to try to incoroporate different platforms in our websites that will help raise awareness an keep us in the loop.
All of the top accounts seemed appropriate to me until I ran into numbers 8 and 10. I always hear from the soccer enthusiasts here in the United States that soccer is the world's sport but I never really gave it much thought except during the world cup. Having two soccer teams in the top ten for twitter brands around the world is actually stunning to me. Having just recently made a twitter for this class, I don't currently follow any of these, however I will probably end up following the news channels and youtube. I would have to guess that the Twitter accounts listed all provide entertainment for people to browse on their smart phones and tablets. Even the news today is often hyper dramitized and speculative to keep people watching and following the stories they cover. Often times there are multiple newsworthy stories which never recieve any coverage because all of the news networks are busy tracking a single headline. Being up to date and constantly on the forefront of a story is one of the biggest components people look for, which is why media outlets are always racing to publish a headline first, sometimes sacrificing accuracy along the way.
Personally, I only follow 5 of these accounts. I am actually quite surprised that these are the top 20 accounts. The huge rise and use in social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram is very apparent and useful to society, but it is weird to see that people follow these general accounts. I use these platforms because they are an effective and popular outlet to share media, find information on current events, job opportunities, and other headlines. However, I don’t follow the social media accounts so I found it surprising that others do. Additionally, there were a few brands like Apple that I would have expected to be on the list.
On the other hand, what didn’t surprise me were the several news accounts (CNN, CNN Breaking News, BBC, New York Times). This is because people love the fast, consistent, detailed updates straight to their cell phone. People don't believe they have the time to sit down and watch the news or catch up with the world, so they prefer it on the go.
The list does not surprise me at all because I'm familiar with and use many of these brands on a daily basis. I don't follow any of these accounts on twitter, however, I am familiar with mostly all of them. These accounts have such popularity because they provide the most information that people are interested in which helps them gain followers and recognition. By paying attention to these big brands and their accounts, we can learn what topics are attracting user attention and how they promote themselves. This is extremely useful when trying to gain your own visitor traffic on your own personal blog.
I think it's pretty interesting that Twitter isn't the most followed account on its own platform. I was happy to see that UberFacts did not make the cut. I follow 10 of these accounts, and I think what makes them unique is that they deliver unique, rich content rapidly and are generally considered reputable. Many of these accounts listed demonstrate the global reach of some of these organizations (FCs, TV networks, etc).
This list does not surprise me much because it makes sense that top social media platforms, such as YouTube and Instagram, would be popular on other platforms. Sharing and viewing is extremely common and Twitter is just another medium for videos and pictures to be seen. As for the news accounts, people nowadays want their news to be as concise as possible and Twitter is the perfect forum for that. They have access to breaking news and can make the decision to either read the whole article or only read the brief information provided in the 140 characters and continue on with their day. The popular sports accounts that made the list surprise me because I didn’t realize the popularity of certain international soccer teams or the popularity of the NBA. I’m curious about what type of information the sports fans seek (besides game times or scores) from visiting their favorite teams on Twitter.
It is so funny that this was brought up this week because I just saw the same thing in class! I was not surprised about the most popular social media account because think about all the new going on between ISIS and world events. People are constantly keeping up with the news and then sharing with others, which makes the other social media outlets popular. It's not anything that they are doing right or wrong, it's the fact that some outlets are more informational than others and right now with all the world news, those social media outlets happen to be more popular than others.
I think this happens is because people are willing to know more about those brand, but they do not have enough time to looking for those information. The job for people who generates the official twitter account is to find out the interesting information, and organize them. Such like YouTube, people like to watch video on YouTube, but you have to know the keywords to search them out first, this is the long process. If you follow their twitter, you don't need to look for them, they will tell you what to watch. Another example is Google, there is many Google tools we don't know but is useful such like Google analytics. Also people can comment on their twitter about what kind of information they would like to know. Overall I think official twitter is not only a way to release information, but also build brand reputation and customer relationship.
I found it kind of suprprising that some of the most popoular accounts on twitter were other forms of social media. I for one would not think to follow FB or Instagram on twitter because I simply go on those platforms to use/folllow them. It seems silly to me to follow other social medias via twitter. I do however get folllowing different news stations and such on twitter as I follow a bunch of them such as CNN and BCC. I think news accounts are popular on twitter because of how fast they can update their followers. The fact they are have to be under 180 characters means the posts are to the point and don't have any fluff.
Overall this list wasn't too surprising to me. There were some brands that I assumed would be on the list since they are such a big brand but didn't make it. It might be an overall popular brand but maybe just not talked about as much on social media. Two of the brands that I was not surprised about at all were FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. I feel that when I am on twitter, I always see at least one thing about either of those teams. They are consantly popping up on my timeline and making it on to the trending page. I also did notice that on the list there were multiple other social media sites on the top 20. I think this is because our generation is so fasinated and involved with social media and social media sites. We are consantally checking our facebooks or texting someone etc. Therefore that's why I believe these brands are on the top 20 list.
Twitter is a great way to keep up with current events and find great sources of information. This is why in some ways social media is benificial. We are able to inform ourselves about information from all over the world. But at the same time we are so attached and dependent on it.
At the same time a lot of these brands are just starting out and they are relying on social media to help them get their name out there and get people to want to know more about them. Social media is such a powerful tool that people can refer to for guidence and assitance. It can help people make decisions subconciously.
After reading through the list of the Top 20 most popular brands on Twitter, I found I was not entirely surprised by the brands that I saw. A lot of these brands are farely young, and they have focused on their image making people want to follow them and know more. It shows just how important it is to be ready to adapt, revise, regroup and strategize in order to stay on top in today's world. Things change so quickly and the power that social media has been given points out the importance of being present on social media and even further than that, the importance of the quality of one's presence.
I'm a little surprised by a few of the top brands. I was not expecting YouTube and Instagram to be the top two accounts. I follow YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, CNN Breaking News, ESPN, CNN, The New York Times, Sports Center, Facebook, and BBC Breaking News, but none of the others. I'm sort of surprised that Real Madrid is ranked 8th, and I'm also surprised that BBC News (World) isn't in the top 20 accounts. I understand why BBC Breaking News is ahead of BBC News (World), but I would've expected more BBC Twitter accounts in the top. I think one of the common factors with all of these accounts is that they post constantly. There isn't a new tweet every second, but there are enough to keep followers entertained. I think that posting regularly draws more followers.
I can agree that these companies probably would be the top 20 most popular brands to follow and I am not surprised at all. If I were to come up with a list, it would probably be similar if not the same as this list minus FC Barcelona, Real Madrid FC and Ramalan Indonesia. Social media such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are great sources to find information on current events, internship/job opportunities, and celebrity gossip. Social media is so beneficial because you find out about what's happening around the world but also in your personal life with your friends, family, and peers. Many companies have shifted towards using social media to advertise their product or services. All of these brands are helpful for all kinds of people and satisfy the needs of the majority so people continue to come back and as a result gain a level of dependency on them. MTV, CNN, ESPN, NBA, New York Times, etc. are all brands that any race, religion, or even gender can see as entertainment. These companies are staying up to date with current information and using platforms that can reach large amounts of people.
This list does not suprise me entirely. Upon going throught the list, I did find it interesting that eight of the top 20 most popular brands on Twitter were other social media sites. I began to think that maybe this is because these sights now how to form this type of popularity. There are so many big brands in the world, but they did not make the list for a reason. For example, a brand such as Oreo is very larger globally--most everyone knows it, but they are less popular than these listed. That may be because these other on the list rely on Twitter because their users are fellow social media users.
I also looked at the fact that another large potion of those brands that made the list were news sources. I know from experience that the easiest way to acquire news is by following a brand on Twitter. Updates are constant. This could be a large reason for their popularity as well.
I am not surpised by these these top 20 brands in the slightest. Social Media posts, Sports, and Breaking News are all anyone wants to read about these days. Following the major producers of those categories of content makes perfect sense. What's actually funny though is I don't follow any of these accounts. I'm more interested in specfic things like Michigan news and Detroit Sports. These accounts are unique becasue they give you a broad spectrum of updates and posts other accounts can't provide. The other reason these accounts are so popular is becasue they are all well established brands people tend to perfer. These brands continuously satisfy the consumers wants and needs on a day-to-day basis. So in tun the consumer follows that brand with the expectation of being satisfied in the future.
Many of the brands on this list are news sources, and it makes sense that they're in the top 20 of followed brands because I know of people whom use their Twitter feed as their main source of headlines! The Twitter accounts of such brands such as The New York Times, BBC Breaking News, CNN, etc. all Tweet with enticing news headlines, so it makes sense for their high following.
This list wasn't very surprising to me when I first read over it, but after thinking about it a little bit more I was surprised to see that Buzzfeed isn't on there too. I think that the majority of tweets I see on Twitter come from Buzzfeed's account, or from people tagging their articles. I think accounts are unique by the voice that they portrey. People on Social Media usually go to Twitter to get away from the seriousness of their everyday life, so by having a clever comment in 140 characters is pleasing to users. I think the most important thing to learn from these accounts is to be consistent with posting tweets, and having a consistent voice, that is different than the other accounts you see. To give something fresh for the users to enjoy.
Reading over this list, I am not overly surprised. These are all big names that would be mentioned a lot. I did find it interesting that Twitter was not the most mentioned brand on Twitter. I found it sort of funny that it was beat out by YouTube and Instagram, though it does make some sense since users are often tweeting about material linked back to those sites.
Yes, I was surprised how many of these accounts were ones like Youtube or UberSocial. However, then I considered it and actually...these really should not be surprising. These are all large news or entertainment companies that are largely quite popular and take up huge portions of folks time throughout the day. Either they provide global news, or they provide immediate connection with brands that people think are "cool" and identify with (sports, Youtube, etc.). It is more like, I would not have thought of these accounts right off the top of my head, mostly because they are not personally ones I would follow (maybe a few like Google, or some of the news Twitters). As of yet, I do not follow any of these accounts.
Some elements of the list surprise me and others do not. I was surprised to see that Youtube has more followers on Twitter than Twitter does. CNN doesn't surprise me much because I feel like as a national news, people find them extremely credible. I only follow 5 of those accounts on my twitter, but part of that is because I don't follow any of the soccer teams or any of the social media accounts on Twitter. I mostly follow the news pages. I was very surprised that Apple wasn't on the list, but then I found out that Apple doesn't have a Twitter. I find this strange, considering how popular their products are.
I'm sure what makes these accounts unique is their interaction with their following. Even though they have millions of followers I'm sure that they respond/interact with their users in some way or another. They are probably popular based on culture as well as what they post. For example, soccer is the most popular sport in the world so it makes sense that prestigious soccer clubs have a lot of followers because they have a lot of fans.
All the brands are widely known and I can imagine they have a big following on Twitter. I personally only following 1 of these brands on the list, ESPN. I was surprised that other social medias being followed such as Youtube or Instagram; personally I would never think to follow those. Another interesting thing about the list is that there are a number of soccer teams and Spanish Twitter. Crazy to see that social media is huge in all parts of the world.
I am not surprised at the number of news outlets that have top the charts for the top 20 brands on Twitter. Twitter is the first place that many people go to for news everyday. It is constantly being updated and I think news outlets were very smart to try and dominate this form of social media. Obviously the users of print newspaper are declining while the users of social media are rising. I think major news outlets such as CNN Breaking News, which ranks number 3, will remain popular on Twitter because of the instantaneous updates and the easy accessibility to world events. I think that the popularity of sports is similar to that of news outlets. Sporting events are being tweeted about live, which again appeals to the notion of getting updated information constantly and easily.
I am surprised by the number one and number two rankings, YouTube and Instagram. My first thought was, how could two other social networks dominate another one? How can that be possible? I’m not sure how Twitter could let that happen, but I guarantee that the persistent activity on twitter from YouTube and Instagram have not only increased their twitter popularity, but have drawn users of twitter to their social media sites. This is a good lesson that to achieve ultimate recognition and popularity in the media world, it is important to focus on all forms of media, not just one. If Instagram didn’t use Twitter, it would be hard for them to get another form of effective advertising and communication with their users and target markets.
I don't actually have a twitter but this list does suprise me, it also makes me laugh. I think it is funny how the top two accounts are two other social media accounts. I guess it is funny how they are all somewhat connected. I think that makes these accounts all unique is that they are al social media accounts or accounts where people can interact. I think we can learn how to give our cusotmers/audinece what they want based on these accounts. All these accounts are accounts people have things to discuss and let the company know how they can improve.
