Twitter is a funny social network. They say you can use Twitter for whatever you want. And that's true. For this class we want to use it to carry on conversation with our students. That's why we use the hashtag #NMDL and we tweet at you, and expect you to do the same.
Twitter in this case is a great way to share information with you the student. It's also a great way to interact, and have a conversation related to our class.
You have a Twitter extra credit opportunity this Friday as Ingenex Digital Marketing (my company) is hosting a #DigitalChat from 3-4 PM EST on the topic of Klout. A perfect topic for all you who want to win a trip to Google, and win the Klout competition that Michal Lorenc has set up.
I hope you participate in the #digitalchat. You can see some info on our past digital chats by visiting our digital marketing blog. You'll notice, we have been keeping track of the chats using Storify. Like that?
So what do I want from you students. Start following the #NMDL tag. And follow your instructors and the class Twitter. Follow us all: @msunewmedia @mlorenc @mehraban @3pointross @grahamdavis and follow more like @ingenex
So how can we better use Twitter in this class? Share the resources you post on the class site to Twitter and use the #NMDL tag. Ask questions. Give encouragement. Promote cool events that relate to social media. RT things your profs say, and other things related to MSU or our class. Follow and engage with other students.
Get in the game with Twitter. Time for Week 2.
Comments & Feedback
I began using Twitter a couple of years ago and it was a hard transition from Facebook to that. After creating it, I hardly used the account for the first few months. It seemed silly to just tweet your thoughts all day, everyday. There were also no pictures or extended apps like Facebook. I was so used to using Facebook to only communicate with my friends and put up pictures that it took me awhile to understand how much more useful Twitter could be. Not only did I began using it to connect with friends, but to network, follow news stories, and just basically stay up to date on the latest information. Twitter is byfar the most powerful networking tool to date. The possibilities are endless because it seems like everyone is using it.
I opened my twiiter account few years ago but I didn't use twitter much because I realized if no one follows me, there is no point of doing it. I forgot about my twitter for a while and I started to use it again because of this clas. There was big difference with using my twitter account at that time and now. I have linked my twitter account to other social networks such as LinkedIn, Google+, Youtube, and Klout and I found people are actually following my twitter account because I've posted newly updated information from other social network to my twitter account. I also found Klout score and twitter activity are very closely related to each other that I started to use twitter very frequently. I really like to learn how to use twitter more actively and wisely from this class especially involving with job search.
I actually started using twitter when it first sort of became popular back in 2008. I was so clueless and confused as to what it was because I was always more interested in facebook, but after getting the hang of things I found it to be really fun! I really like how this class involves twitter in their discussions and events going on because a lot of students are regular tweeters. How often are we asked to turn our phones on silent when we get to class? I think it's pretty cool that this class uses twitter as an outlet to communicate with one another and the profs. So it's a little tough when you ask how you can make twiter better in this class. Maybe twitter could aid in participation point, if the students tweet at the msunewmedia account with useful information for the class. Also, this class should start using twitter as a means of communication for questions asked between students.
I think the extra credit opportunity done via Twitter is an amazing idea and I hope it can happen again!
I have had Twitter for quite some time now and seem to enjoy it more and more each day. I find it not only such a great tool to help my communication with others, but its also very resourceful; its where I get half of my news intake for each day since it is so up to date. I also love it because having the hashtag for this class as NMDL, I have been able to keep up to date with this class and also have had a couple questions answered via Twitter instead of going through the whole emailing process or posting on the discussion board.
I think its very important that everyone starts using Twitter because its only to their advantage for future endeavors.
I have never used twitter before this class. In my country, we use Weibo instead of twitter. there are quite similar social media in China comparing to U.S., such as Twitter vs. Weibo, and Facebook vs. Renren. For me, it is easier to use Weibo than Twitter. I am still confused about it. Also there is few of my friends using Twitter, it makes harder to getting used to it. However, I know that Twitter is a very good social network. And I will keep learning in this class.
I joined the Twitter world about a year ago and was reluctant to do so because I didn't know what all you could do and get accomplished by creating a twitter. I thought it was a site used only for status updates, but as I went on it more often I realized it could be used to do much more. I use twitter to voice my opinion on a variety subjects or keep my friends updated on what's going on me. But I also use twitter a lot for getting news and keeping up with other individuals as well. For example, when there is a rain delay for a tigers game I know about it right away because they send out tweets. I know that my friends are on vactaion because they tweet about it. Twitter has become one of my top sources for obtaining a small amount of information very quickly and I always encourage others to sign up for a Twitter account because of it.
I did not use Twitter before this class. I had made one a year ago when friends were on Twitter, but I had never taken the time to understand it. It did not occur to me that it could be useful to gain awareness and to use it more than just a social tool between friends. I am still learning and understanding how it works. I have started to tweet and explore the opportunities. My confidence about tweeting has risen and I've been logging in more often to read what others have to say. It has been useful and interesting reading about different companies and news posts.
I started to use my twitter about a year ago. Most of my friends in Korea, they are using SNS especially, twitter and facebook. To keep contacting them and catch up with news I had to have those following SNS profile. However, when I first adapt the twitter, I had some difficulties using it. It was somewhat different than any other SNS services, such as facebook, myspace, or other Korean SNS services. For example, facebook can go public and does not have that much of privacy, but still it has some barriers of friend limitation. If I want my profile to be only introduced to my friends I can simply change the types of privacy level to ‘only show to my friends’. Yet, twitter’s widely share commenting systems, companies can use this as an efficient advertising tools. It will be easy for companies to post and share information about them and consumers can easily share their opinions about product or service too.

When I first started using twitter, I did not fully understand how powerful it actually is. For example, sports scores can be found faster on twitted than on ESPN’s website due to refresh rates. I like using twitter as an informal way of interacting with NMDL class member and instructors. It was expecially neat following the NMDL tag during the Novi class meeting. The 140 character limit ensures people are to the point and do not ramble on.
I did not use Twitter until I learned it from this class. It is useful to find information about job and companies. Also, easy to connect to people that I want to know about and by following them will give me an opportunity to connect to others.
It is easy way of knowing people and their
information, therefore, using Twitter is great way to expand connections. I
started to use Twitter more often because it updates fast and I can read others
posts. I think learning Twitter is good experience because I am going to
graduate next semester and this will help me to give connections to others that
I want to work for in the future.
I have had a twitter acount for over a year and only used it once to tweet a potential client for my boss since he didn't have an account. When I came back to it for this class my picture was the initial egg and I never tweeted but somehow I managed a few followers. Thanks to this class I have started to explore twitter more and don't avoid it like I used to. I am quickly learning that not keeping up with the new forms of social media is like my parents generation who have to take classes on computers for simple programs. My biggest difficulty is keeping up with all the information because I'm not even used to checking my facebook every day. I have to get used to it though because social media is expanding and I don't want to get left behind. Thankfully there's an app for everything now and I can keep up with it whenever/wherever.
The reason I started using Twitter is that I wanted to get closed to the celebrities.
Since lots of celebrities tweets about what they are doing, it's interesting to know about their lives.
However, once I follow someone on twitter, I get to have lots of information about the events, news, literally anything!
Compared to all other social network services, I think Twitter is the simplest and easiest social network services we can use.
Since it limits the words we can tweet, people can easily read others' tweets.
So far, I am not an active twitter user. I've been only reading others' tweets. However, I'm about to try to be a active user, so that I can be more active
on communicating with others as an advertising major student.
I have had a twitter for around a year and a half now, but didn't start using it until this summer. I think that twitter is an amazing social media source for how simple it is. Twitter can essentially be used as a newspaper if you follow the right things, this can be very useful for people on the go. Also, I had a question about one of the assignments, and I didn't have my instructos email address on me, so I tweeted at him. Sure enough, he tweeted back at me with an answer to my question. I also feel like people can speak there mind more on twitter, and not have backlash from parents or other family members, because I feel like twitter is much more of a younger thing to do.
My problem with using Twitter is that I'm always afraid of missing something important, because my page is always flooded by new tweets. Facebook now can automatically put the information that you are more likely to be interested in at the front of all news feeds after your ranking them for several times. But, Twitter doesn't have such function. I know that I can find specific tweets, such as #nmdl, by building search list. However, it is incovenient to do this everytime. Is there any way to help me optimize my Twitter and make it easier for me to follow the hashtag that I'm interested in?
I really think Twitter should be used by more people online. People don't realize how effective it is to use Twitter to expand their networks, engage in more conversations and connect with people that they want to connect with. I have been following Gatorade ever since I made my Twitter account and have been retweeting and replying to their tweets. I never thought I would get a response from such a big corporate, but this July, I didn't only get a response from and retweeted by Gatorade, but also got followed by them. I have realized that Twitter is the most effective social network to get my messages out to whoever I follow. I have already started following the #NMDL tag, but I will use it more to expand my connections and participate in many conversations.
It is very interesting to see how people use their Twitter for many different purposes. I know many of my friends use it to communicate with others and use it to update their Facebook status. Many businesses use their Twitter to disseminate news. I created my Twitter account recently and found it very useful for following my favorite artists and brands’ news. Since it is coming straight from the artists and companies, it’s a lot quicker to hear the news. Also, I believe many politicians use Twitter for their election campaigns, and it plays a big role in attracting votes. I am still getting used to Twitter and tagging people, but I see how this can be a very fast and effective way to communicate with others.
Despite having been on Twitter for a while now, this class has (already) really helped to teach me the value of hashtags. Previously, I've used them more in a casual way; for example, to highlight an inside joke with a friend, or to inclide a bit of sarcasm. Utilizing the #NMDL hashtag, however, has shown me the benefit of using hashtags with their intended purpose. I can see the other cool links that classmates are sharing, and it clues me in when a professor's tweet might be especially valuable to me.
I've had a twitter account for about a year and a half now. At first I used it a lot and then I gradually started to tweet less and less. Since starting this class I have in a sense rediscovered twitter. I don't necessarily use it to keep in touch with my friends and family, I use Facebook more for that. But what I really like about twitter is that I am able to follow companies that I frequently buy products from, concepts that I find entertaining, and keep up to date on current news and events. Since a tweet is so short and has to be less than 140 characters, you really have to make every word count. When I'm reading a tweet from a company I like, I am able to obtain all the information I need in a very short time. Instead of taking the time to go the the company's actual website and scan it for information, I can just view their twitter profile. All the material I am looking for is condensed onto one page in the form of tweets. This is a faster and more efficient way to search.
My friend created a Twitter account for me about a year ago now. I never actually used it until taking this course. I always saw the site as another distraction like Facebook or Pinterest that would just waste my time and distract me from my schoolwork. Recently I started using the site and I really enjoy it now. I love how active the ADV 420 class is on Twitter encouraging professor student interaction. Originally, I saw Twitter strictly as a site to chat with friends and post funny tweets. My mind was changed when I explored and discovered all of the options available on Twitter. It is not strictly for engaging with friends but also a way to connect and interact professionally. I also like and appreciate the extra credit digitalchat opportunity available to us students. I'm glad I gave Twitter a second chance and I plan on becoming as involved as possible.
I had a Twitter about 2 years ago, but never used it because it was not that exciting to me and not many people had it, and to be honest, I was not sure what it was used for. Now, twitter is becoming one of the most known social media websites in the world, and it is used for literally, everything. It just shows how far it has come and how many new followers it gained from over the years because not a lot of people even knew what it was for. Little did we know, it could be used in a lot of ways. The best about it is that you can stay connected with your company who you are working for, or it can even help you get a job by letting you know inside information that can further your knowledge in that company, and give you key dates and event that are happening. This allows people to not have to go online and check 10 different companies and see and search for when something is happening, all you have to do is log onto twitter, and look on your home page. Using it in class is so smart as well and I see classes down the road using it so much more often. It’s faster, easier, more efficient, and its not boring. If twitter is not there yet, it will become the most used social media site beside Facebook, just because of the fact that it can be used for almost anything that you can think of.
Twitter is definitely an interesting source. I feel when I first started using Twitter, I never said anything. I just followed my friends and a few different people, and read what came up on my news feed. Twitter would be much more useful to me, especially as someone in advertising, if I would use the full potential of Twitter. Re-tweet things that I think are important instead of just reading them and forgetting about it, tweet more myself, follow more people in my field instead of using it as a conversation piece between friends, etc. Because of how huge Twitter has gotten in social media, it really can do a great deal to help promote people, events, and classes. For work last week, I read a a study that showed Twitter was the most used social media website for state health departments. This study also said that Twitter was favored over Facebook to give information by people who follow these health departments. That says a lot. Twitter can be very effective if used properly. I hope to increase my Twitter use with this class...I'm sure I'll succeed in doing so.
I'll be totally honest. I was against Twitter before starting this NMDL class. I felt like Twitter was a glorified Facebook Status and I never felt the need to "follow" celebrities. I have to come to realize that Twitter is far more valuable than I expected. I recently received an internship and my new boss asked me if I had a Twitter. I said "yes I do" all thanks to NMDL. My boss understands the importance of new media and the fact that I am taking this class made me more desireable as a new intern. Twitter is useful in so many ways.
I think that in this class one better way to utilize twitter is to communicate without all the added pics/videos/ games of websites like Facebook. I think that Twitter get straight to the point and for me that better fits my schedule because I am busy and I am always on the go. I would rather ask a quick question to classmates and professors via Twitter then to sift through all of the junk that people put on Facebook. In addition to this I think that all of our classmates should make an effort to connect and we can be each other's support system in the event of questions and tips for the NMDL class. I also feel like the ability to follow and stop following people is good because you can keep only people that are important to you in your Twitter feed. It is easier to priorotize using Twitter.
I've had Twitter for about a year now and have yet to utilize it. I occasionally read others tweets, but have only personally tweeted once. I think that it is a great tool, but I am not 100% sure of all of it's uses. I am excited to get into the Twitter world, and I think that this class will help a lot. Using Twitter to keep up to date with this class and be in the know about homework and extra credit assignments will be a good method of integration for me. I look forward to gaining the knowledge and tools Twitter can offer to me as a student as well as a young professional.
For the longest time I was against the whole Twitter movement. I felt that it was just aimless comments being fired out at a pace you couldn't keep up with. Now after having an account for about 3-4 months I now have a better grasp on my Twitter feed and how to communicate properly on it. At first I did not know who to follow to get information I was interested in, but now I narrowed down who I follow so that my Twitter feed provides me with tweets I am interested in. I still do not use Twitter as much as FaceBook because more of my friends use it and currently I think it is more aesthetically pleasing. I use Twitter more for instant news rather than getting my opinions out, I still use FaceBook for that. I bet in a few more months I'll step my Twitter game up.
Twitter is, without a doubt, my favorite social media website. At first, I didn't like it because I didn't understand it. I thought "Why do I need a Twitter if I already have Facebook? What's the difference?". But Twitter can be used for so much more. The fact that you are able to use hashtags and reply to others with the "@" symbol gives you instant connection to the outer world. I have more than one Twitter account and none of them are private. To me, the more the merrier. It's all about who you know and who you are connected to, so if there's another person out there who wants to connect and share their thoughts, then why not?
Twitter can be used in many different ways. For instance, one of my Twitter profiles is used for humor. I only tweet things that I find funny and only star other people's funny tweets. But I have another Twitter used for professional purposes and that's the one I use for this class. I agree with a lot of previous posts that Twitter could be better used for this class if there were homework reminders or helpful hints. For instance, I have been struggling with the blog assignment and yes I can read other people's comments on this site for help but Twitter is a lot faster, a lot more brief, and a lot more convenient to get information from. It's direct and I don't have to sift through tons of comments just to find the answer I want.
Lauren, I've been following somewhat of a similar path using Twitter for my blogging problems. I was unsure on how to direct my first post - do I dive right into the topic or do I explain my passion behind the topic and allow for future posts to concern social media? I used #NMDL to find what others were talking about and if anyone had similar thoughts or ideas as myself.
I also have multiple Twitter accounts. One is more personal and used to spew any thought that comes into my head whether I think it's relevant for my couple hundred followers or not. The other is used for this class - it all starts with creating a brand for yourself, right?
I think that Twitter could be put to good use by posting homework reminders/helpful hints for our assignments each week. For example - I did not see this posting about the extra credit opportunity regarding the Klout competition until now. Today is Monday, so obviously it is too late to participate in the digital chat. My unawareness of this post led to me missing out on key information. However, I most likely would have become aware of this opportunity if it were posted via facebook or twitter.
I think there are many ways we can use Twitter in this class that can be beneficial. I know that most people probably check their Twitter more often then they check there email. So using Twitter to communicate with the proffessor, and other classmates can be very beneficial and effective. We will probably get faster responses if we have any questions or concerns about the class using Twitter rather then trying to send out an email.
Twitter and Facebook have changed the way we get our daily news and information. I find myself reading blogs and other sites that the people I follow post. I have my everyday list of articles, blogs, and websites that I read. Now with Twitter and Facebook I can open my door to the things that my peers are reading, some good and some bad. Regardless I think that its good to open your doors to new media and those social networking sites make it exceptionally easy to do just that.
I think that the NMDL twitter should post random homework reminders/countdowns if they dont already. (you can see I havent been keeping up with that account as much as I should) More people should use the account to tweet problems or miscommunications we have with assignments to make completing the homework less of time consuming task. Regardless the NMDL twitter is a great idea and it has been used in more efficient ways than so many other class accounts I've followed.
I second Christopher's request at random homework reminders/countdowns. To adequately monitor the benefits of the interaction between teacher and student, what better than a "pop-tweet" to keep everyone on their toes.
The usage of social networking, Twitter specifically, to aid in educational resources is only the tip of the ice burg. The future is already in question for some departments of the teaching industry, with continued evolvement of digital teaching applications, personal handheld smart-devices (Ex: iPads), and online course selection. The realization that our children may one day learn from the computer chair, absent of classrooms, textbooks, chalk boards and recess; is no longer a vision suitable for science fiction. The growing comfortability of networking applications, such as Twitter, in today's teacher-student environment foreshadows our future dependence upon live-streaming programs to continuously feed students information. Granted the usage of social networking to disseminate information is a double-edged sword for #NMDL professors, providing material as well as applying techniques to emulate. Professor Mehraban and crew are giving a preview of what education will be in the future, in a rapidly evolving society.
I am relatively new to the twitter world compared with the rest of the class since I have only had twitter for about a year. In that year I have discovered tons of information about how to tweet, who to follow, what to hashtag, etc. Not until taking this class did I realize how beneficial twitter can be for a company to engage in. Not only can the company connect with consumers, but it can also reach out and ask what the consumers want, developing a better relationship between the company and the people who buy its products. "Live tweeting" is also a term that is new to me and I find it quite fascinating. As mentioned in this blog post, you really can use twitter for whatever you want, and to me it doesn't get much better than that.
I've had a twitter for a few years now and at first I only got it to follow athletes that I like and a few of my friends. I started not really liking it, because I didn't understand why people liked it. Then a few months later, I realized I was using it almost more than facebook. Now, its kind of weird. I'll use it a lot for a day or two and then go a few weeks without using it. Either way, I feel that its a good way for companies to advertise online for free or have promotional deals and contests online. This class has got me to look at twitter in a whole different way and I like it. I'll be using my twitter more often.
I also have had a Twitter account for years. For the first 3-4 years, I never used it. It was not until last year that I really started to tweet and follow more people. I definitely agree that it is a good way for companies to advertise online. It is also a great way for celebrities, athletes, etc. to connect with their fans and followers.
In my opinion, one of the best social medias ever created was Twitter. Twitter has evolved into so many things and it is growing before our eyes. I joined Twitter a couple years ago and have been an avid tweeter ever since. It has become my most used social media over the past years, and let me tell you, it becomes addicting. I catch my friends, and myself, constantly checking Twitter. Whether we are out to dinner, at a party, or just sitting on the couch, one of us is always on this app. The amount of people there are to follow, and the amount of information you can obtain from this one website is almost amazing. This is probably one of the main reasons why Twitter never gets boring or old.
Always having to make the most of your 140 characters can be hard to do. I believe that having this constraint helps our creativity and communication skills. Most likely every time I tweet I go over 140 characters. I always catch myself moving words around and editing my tweet to make everything fit and understandable at the same time. Not only am I able to tweet, but I am able to follow people who I am truly interested in, and the people who follow me are interested in me as well. You can selectively choose who you want to follow and what you want to say. I think Twitter has made a very big name for itself and will only get bigger within the next couple years

I have had a Twitter for about 4 years not but always kept my tweets protected. I didn't want anybody to be able to read my tweets only a select few. I am excited to have my Twitter public now and I can now engage in hashtags and chat with people on Twitter. Twitter is very helpful in promoting events and articles and I am excited to be able to join in this promotion to a bigger audience than just the people I choose. I am also excited to use the #NMDL tag because it seems like a lot of useful information is posted there and it promotes engagement.
I think the easiest way to be effective in this class is to use social media especially twitter to connect with each other. Think of the possibilities if each person in the class should add as many people as they can from NMDL to their network. (This should be a competition with rewards). What if we encouraged fellow classmates through our tweets to read our blogs, join our networks by just telling a little about ourselves? I think the potential to get connected with the people you're learning with is not only a good thing but it will give real world experience - we will need to do this in the world of work. How many people from NMDL do you have in your network? Who will read my blog post and comment?
It was not long ago when I first created my Twitter account. I have to admit that I have very few followers however I try to follow some public figures who are leading in my interest arena. Twitter has no longer a presence of 'just another networking website', and has been growing in a tremendous rate; but it also has a lot to achieve in the long run. I believe that Twitter could be used in more effective ways than just sharing news and information with your friends. Twitter has been important roles with a business standpoint too. With respect to how we could use Twitter for our class, I have started to understand that we could do many things like posting our resources which could be read by many of our classmates as well as followers. Since this would be information which were posted with specific real supporting links and knowledge, they would be more real-time. We can monitor our posts as well as follow our other NMDL friend's resources as well as communicate with our experts i.e. instructors etc. We can ask queries and questions and not just wait for one response when we can communicate with everyone. We can also share more information through hashtags and inform others about many cool facts which we read or came across our daily lives. Twitter just seems to be developing into one of the best platforms of microblogging, researching, news etc. So, tweeeeet it is!!
I am from China, and it is my second year here in USA. I found it hard to get involved with Twitter as I did in China. I started my Chinese "twitter" called Weibo account three years ago, and became very active on it with nearly 400 followers and 882 posts. I check the updates whenever I am free, and post anything on it. I was wondering why I can not be this active on Twitter, and they are working in almost the same way. Later I figured out that the main problems are firstly few followers and people to follow, and also, because of cultural differences, it is hard to capture the interesting things as seen by local people here. Since most of my friends are already busy with their home country social networking accounts, they would not open another one in Twitter to spend even more time on it. Their need to social is already fulfilled. I am following some of my American friends on Twitter, but it seems that my tweets are not that interesting to open a conversation. Therefore, I decide to slow down and observe first. NMDL is a good chance to start a conversation! At the same time, spend more time to take part in more local activities like football game!
I established my first Twitter account as a result of enrolling in the class and find myself reading tweets more than commenting on them which stems from trying to figure out when and what I can comment on that feels relevant to share. I think what you are saying is just jump in the deep end and start paddling. Although if feels a little overwhelming I am keeping up. I like the expanding list that I am following and have adjusted my settings to allow more content to filter through. I am not sure I have my iPhone Twitter app set up right but I am getting there.
I thought there was no point in having a Twitter if I already had a Facebook. I recently joined twitter just a few weeks ago because my roommates finally convinced me to. At first, I did not understand why everyone enjoyed it until I started becoming active in it and started following the right people. Twitter is a great way to communicate with people quickly and recieve updates. Twitter allows for people create statements and use hashtags which will show up if it is searched. Many companies use this social media outlet to promote their brand. This makes the company more appealing since it gives Tweeters opportunties to become active with the company. I think it's great that the class decided to start the #NMDL hastag. It gives us the opportunties to get our questions answered or tweet comments about the class while bettering our Twitter skills.
I wish everyone could pick one social media platform to use and call it good. Now that I have a profile in more than 5 different social media sites, I feel overwhelmed. If I had to choose my favorite it would be facebook because of all the extra content I can see that just isnt as visually appealing as it is on Twitter. Don't get me wrong, I am a die hard Tweeter for sure, but I am always left wanting more from a post that I can't get. Whether it is following a link or searching a picture, Twitter just isn't as attractive a platform. I prefer facebook on my laptop and twitter on my phone. If i'm looking for a quick update or status, Twitter on my iphone is prime and keeps me quickly entertained.
I think I belong to one of the last groups to join Twitter as well. I signed up as NMDL class recommends to. I found that that it's a nice thing to have because I can follow influential people and get updates instantly in stead of going to their blogs to read one by one. I guess it's like a little center for information updates about whichever industry we are interested in. My current concern is that I have not much interaction from people I followed or people that follow me... So the interaction and networking are not working for me. Yet. I hope this will change later as I put more efforts to post more tweets.
If I were to be honest I think that Twitter is a waste of time. To me its just another way for people to share way to much information about their personal life. I also feel that no one needs to know that much pointless information about me and frankly find tweeting quite annoying. If you want to have a conversation with someone the private message them you don't need to display it all over the place in short little blerps, its pointless. But I guess a lot of people love twitter, I have one but you will rarely see me post on it, I really just use it to watch the stupid stuff other people write.
When I first joined Twitter, I was not impressed with the lack of information we are able to share on the site. Like Facebook, I wanted to know a lot of useless information about people and for what reason? It got boring! After getting the hang of Twitter and following some of my favorite celebrities, newspapers, entertainment, and music accounts, I've introduce Twitter into my daily lifestyle. I learned there is a certain bliss about posting less to receive more. I was much more interested at reading a short post on Twitter, than someones entire agenda on Facebook. This website is an amazing tool we should all utilize to connect and network ourselves with companies, artists, interests, and more. It keeps us in touch with the things we as individuals care for. What I like most about Twitter is the ability to follow who you want, regardless if they "follow you" or not. You are in full control of what you see, so you don't have to worry about mindless junk on your timeline.
I can definitely say that I was probably one of the last people to get a twitter. I used to be so anti twitter and had told myself and everyone that I would never get one. My friends convinced me in the middle of last year to create one and basically did it all for me. After a few months of using it, I decided to delete it. Then, I enrolled in this course and had to make a new one! The difference is that now I know better ways to use twitter and how to use it for a purpose. I used to use twitter only to complain about bad days or unimportant things. Now that I've learned more about social media in this class, I'm beginning to use twitter in a better way, can talk about class and questions I have, and have started to like it a little more.
I'm proud to say I'm one of the first people I know who joined twitter. According to the Twitter for Mac app, I'm the 18,452,641st person to join the social network - I was in Arizona at the time and was extremely skeptical - I was against rapid use of Facebook status updates, so an entire social network based on status was by no means appealing to me. Neverthelesss, I joined because I heard it was the next big thing, and this turned out to be quite true.
What is so amazing about Twitter, and why I think it is a much more positive and important development for modern technology than other social networks that shall remain nameless, is the hundreds of different ways it can be used. It's credited as the integral tool that allowed for the Arab Spring to take place. It keeps friends updated on each others' thoughts and activities, even if they're not actually speaking with each other on a regular basis. It spreads the news, promotes and maintains discussion, and, at the end of the day, gives everyone the chance at spreading what they have to say to the rest of the world. Twitter's role in this class, I would say, is one of the coolest things about it.
So I was finally able to figure out Twitter within the last 6 months, and now realize what all the hype is about. When I logged on for the first time in about 3 months, somehow I had 197 follower requests. I didn't know why, seeing as I didnt tweet anything remotely interesting. But just like we are learning in this class, people want to have an online presence. I think that the idea has rolled around in my head a little more, and now i realize just how effective Twitter can actually be. Using it as engagement for this class is a great way to teach us how Twitter, when used properly, can be a reliable and educational form of communication. I hope to get a better feel for the appropriate hashtags and people to Tweet. Its all a part of the social media evolution that continues to change our world. Hopefully I can keep up!
