Twitter is a funny social network. They say you can use Twitter for whatever you want. And that's true. For this class we want to use it to carry on conversation with our students. That's why we use the hashtag #NMDL and we tweet at you, and expect you to do the same.
Twitter in this case is a great way to share information with you the student. It's also a great way to interact, and have a conversation related to our class.
You have a Twitter extra credit opportunity this Friday as Ingenex Digital Marketing (my company) is hosting a #DigitalChat from 3-4 PM EST on the topic of Klout. A perfect topic for all you who want to win a trip to Google, and win the Klout competition that Michal Lorenc has set up.
I hope you participate in the #digitalchat. You can see some info on our past digital chats by visiting our digital marketing blog. You'll notice, we have been keeping track of the chats using Storify. Like that?
So what do I want from you students. Start following the #NMDL tag. And follow your instructors and the class Twitter. Follow us all: @msunewmedia @mlorenc @mehraban @3pointross @grahamdavis and follow more like @ingenex
So how can we better use Twitter in this class? Share the resources you post on the class site to Twitter and use the #NMDL tag. Ask questions. Give encouragement. Promote cool events that relate to social media. RT things your profs say, and other things related to MSU or our class. Follow and engage with other students.
Get in the game with Twitter. Time for Week 2.
Comments & Feedback
Currently, Twitter is my favorite social media tool. But it defintely wasn't always my favorite. I first started a Twitter as a class assginment my freshman year of college, and immediately disliked it, I even abandoned it for two years before picking it up again. Now, I am addicted. It is so much better than any other social media site, and I believe it's because of the character limit. I can read quips from my friends and favorite celebrities or brands. I am not bombarded with information, and if I think that the pace at which Twitter refreshes with new content is great, it keeps things from getting boring.
When Twitter first came out, I did not think it would ever amount to where it's at right now. Twitter has become one of the most used social networking sites! Having Twitter in this class is also helpful, because we get to use more benefits (extra credit) that not everyone gets to use. Before this class, I wasn't a HUGE twitter person. Now I feel like I can't stop tweeting! Sharing information and resources and keeping contact with people has become much easier and much more efficient.
Now a days, Twitter became one of the biggest and numerous social media that connects people together. I used to use myspace while I was in high school, myspace was the biggest social media at that time. However, as time goes by, Facebook comes up and showed to people and became most popular social media now. As a truth, I still uses facebook more often than Twitters. Twitters in South Korea became most popular way to make a communication of people to speak to the public what they want to share or criticize. For marketing, if company uses a Twitter marketing, people may access in a convenience way to reach or give them a question about what they want to ask to the customer service, rather than waiting for a long time for waiting to talk with customer services on the phone. In this way, I would like to uses a Twitter services to asks a question about the class materials, homeworks, and communicate meet with other students in the class. In this way, MSU needs to be spread out the twitter being used in class. I also attached a twitter links to Michigan State University's offical twitters
<p>I was not a big fan of Twitter even though i understand that Twitter has it's benefits. I'm more favor in using Facebook because i already got used to it. So I thought that i don't need another social media device. However, thanks to this class, I actually start to log on my Twitter account and use it for getting information. Although I still feel more comfortable making conversation with my friends through Facebook than Twitter, I really like the fact that anyone can easily access all tweets and follow professors or companies that they want to contact through Twitter. I will try to use my Twitter more effectively and retweet useful information to share with my friends. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
Was reading an interesting artlicle on Mashable today about how the Israeli Government announced they had killed a leader of an enemy group via Twitter today before any media station got the information. Marking a first in the social media world. It's pretty incredible the power that social media sites have gained over the best few years, that now world governments are tweeting about what they are doing! If this is any sign of what to come forget watching the nightly news better turn into the 6 oclock twitter feeds!
Twitter is an extremely helpful resource for this class. Not only is it one of the most used social media sites, but it can connect students throughout the class. I believe our class is already using twitter succesfully with the hashtag and being able to share information with eachother. Additionally, for each of our assignments we are continously using twitter, such as when we connect our blog to our twitter site. To enhance the use of twitter each student should be following the #NMDL tag and sharing the resources we post to the class site to our twitters. Just like you have stated, it would also be interesting if students would retweet specific tweets our Proffessor says that are related to our class. If each student simply follows the tag it will alreadt create a way for all of us to be connected to twitter and a big start in using it to the best of our abilites.
Twitter could be helpful to this class by all the ways you say in the final paragraph. I think if people tweeted the resources they post it would help others enagage in them more instead of having to search for the resource in the resources page on the website. Even retweeting things from others that may relate to the class or business that relates to the calss can help people see it more and interact with it more. I think people would interact/engage more with it via twitter because it is so widely used and accepted now. It seems to be the step down from facebook and is being utilized by a lot more people. They could also share this information with friends or possibly post it on their own wall for potential employers to see they are interested in their field.
I think using Twitter for this class is important because it's a way we can connect with other students and discuss different topics assocaited with class. I know I have connected with a lot of students in this class on social media websites as a way to reach out for help about certain topics. You can use twitter to reach out to friends about certain events going on around your area, or retweet posts they may put that you agree with or that interest you. When it comes to this class anytime a student retweets anything that relates to the class topics i always check out what they are retweeting, it helps me to keep up with the class and also say on topic with trends students are talking about. I think that Twitter is by far one of the best social media sites out because it allow you to keep things simple and also keep the looker interested.
Twitter is a entertaining because of hashtages. I feel that using twitter in class is a great way to make it a fun and interactive environment. It helps build a relationship between student and their classmates or instructor. It also helps carry educational content outside of the classroom. I think that more classes should do what #NMDL does and allow for conversation to occur on Twitter.
Its pretty cool to take a class that uses technology that is up to date and cutting edge. I never was a Twitter user before this class but Ive started to get the hang of it. The digital chat is pretty cool and I look forward to participating and earning extra credit. Plus the Klout is a great topic since we are competing in the competition.
I love that this class uses twitter! It makes everything so much more fun and relateable. I feel like if more classes used twitter as a way to keep class conversations going, students would be more interested in the class. I mean look at Angel, there is always a problem with the system at least once a week, but if more classes used Twitter then there would be an easy and more dependable way to get answers to questions from classmates and professors.
This course has taught me more than anything else what a useful source twitter is for spreading our word, and our other websites. We are able to quickly dispel information to people that are easy to find and easy to reach, and get feedback, whether positive or negative. I work in the service industry and 4 older business men were discussing twitter and one of the men at the table said he didn't have it. When his friends asked why he replied, "Because I'm not a 13 year old girl." While at the time the comment made me laugh, the man was wrong and even his friends knew it. They started going into long-winded spiel about all of the vast business opportunities available on twitter, and all of the networking possibilities. To help increase our twitter use I am going to try and tweet about helpful rescources I find so other students can use them to more solidify the platform that their social media is built on.
I think Twitter is a great resource for businesses of any size. It is a great way to increase your engagement and personability with consumers. I once was tweeted to directly by CVS Pharmacy after buying a pair of sunglasses from one of their stores. It made me feel like I had a closer connection to the company. As an intern at a small business, I can also say that the use of social media, especially Twitter, has signficantly helped improved our presence throughout the community. We are able to build a direct connection to our customers that would have otherwise not have been capable.
One of the greatest apsects of this class is the action and information that the instructors and the students push out and engange through Twitter. For teachers and professors, there's always a fine line that they have to walk on when engaging with their students on, say, Facebook, where things can get out of hand and inappropriate fairly quickly. However, Twitter acts as a tamer channel of communication and is an excellent way of building a relationship with your students. Keep it up and I'll personally try and do my best to engage more often with the Professors and the class through #NMDL!
I love the fact this class uses twitter! It gives us an opportunity to have fun with our classmates while keeping up with the latest class news. Using the hashtag #NMDL and having it pop up in my friends feeds gives them an opportunity for them to ask questions and explore the opportunites behind the growing advertising using new media forms. I also enjoy retweeting or tweeing at our profs during lecture or while doing the hw. Its an easy way to let them know you're paying attention or just looking for a laugh. It also makes the class a little more personable.
I agree with Christopher. Twitter is an awesome use for classes and i believe that all classes should use it and even the proffessors. It makes it a lot more fun to interact and have a good time when class starts to get boring. If more classes started to be like #NMDL then things would go a lot more smoothly and be a lot more fun for everyone.
Twitter definitely has it's benefits in comparison to other social media sites like Facebook, in my opinion. Twitter seems to be a little more personal because if someone has a Twitter account and their tweets are unprotected, anyone can easily access all of their tweets or contact them through Twitter, whereas Facebook tends to be a little more private because, from my experience, the majority of people have their Facebooks inaccessible without first being "friends" with other users. As discussed during our first class session, Twitter is also a great way to contact companies and sometimes even get a direct response from them regarding any comments are concerns you may have about their products.
I was very skeptical to join Twitter back in 2011 when my roomates created my account. I was already distracted enough by Facebook and didn't want another social media device to distract me from my studies. And indeed, twitter did just that. I rarely even use my Facebook anymore because Twitter gives me everything I need. I choose who I want to follow based off the resources I need and want to hear about every day. Even reading this blog supplies me with extra information other people would not be aware of unless they engage in this blog. I will follow my professors, start looking at the tag timeline of NMDL and retweet relevant information to my life. My next two resources will be tweeted once they are completed today!
I like how Twitter can be used for so many different things from promoting, staying in touch and even searching for new content. I think that Twitter is the best social network for searching for information by people who know (and don't know) what they are talking about. You can follow thought leaders in an area of expertise that you are interested in or search for completly new content with different # attached.
I never knew how valuable Twitter was going to be when I joined back in 2009. At first, I used it to vent, but I also limited my friend count on Twitter because I just didn't want anyone to know about my business. But now, I noticed that I used Twitter more when I had my friends follow me. Twitter is a great way to connect with my classmates. All we have to do is follow our professors and search the hashtag #nmdl and there it is, our current classmates and professors tweeting about our class. It is a great resource if we ever have trouble with our homework assignment. Not only is Twitter helpful for class, I feel like our future employers are monitoring us. I had a recruiter from Saks Fifth Avenue follow me, so I limited my tweet. I try not to tweet much about my problems because I don't want my future employers to read about my problems.
Twitter is expecially the Chinese version twitter"Weibo". It totally become the new era of the social media in CHina which even change the life of people in big cities. I do think the Twitter is a good tool for our classes in aspect of interaction.
Ah!! I didn't even see this until today and I am upset that I missed out on the opportunity for some extra credit! I will have to keep my eyes peeled for another opportunity. I do agree that Twitter is a strange social network, I know many people who abuse Twitter, to mainly only tweet when they are drunk at the bar to tell everyone how drunk they are. I do however like that we can use the #NMDL tag to talk to other students in the ADV 420 class. This provides a good way for us to ask questions and get them answered by either an instructor or another student!
When Twitter first hit the social media scene, I was all in, but now, I'm just kind of worn out by twitter. I still think twitter is a cool concept and a great way to communicate and stay in touch with the "now" because it is so instant, but I don't think that everyone quite grasps the concept of how to use and not abusse twitter which makes staying on and being an active tweeter even harder because I have to sift through the junk tweets to get to the tweets that are really informative or at least entertaing. Tweeting in and for this class is cool though becuase it is an easy way to keep up with classmates and instructors, and see what's new and what's going on with the class.

Twitter has really broken down many barriers and allows people from all over the world to follow the causes or people they most care about. Prior to Twitter, how did we all know about the thoughts of Kim Kardashian or our favorite music artists? Although, many celebrities hire social media experts to manage their communication, it still leaves some people starstruck if they are retweeted by someone famous. I think Twitter adds a human element to corporations, causes, and people that we look up to.
I honestly never really got into twittering. Actually I never really understood the whole point of it because I was into favebook and facebook status just works like twitter. It just give your more features. It lets you chat online, video chat, share videos/images, and you can actually get in touch with people that you care about. Wherelse, twitter is just like sharing your thoughts about something. twitter itself isn't too bad, but when you have an active facebook account, I don't get the whole point of doing twitter, really.
To be honest, it's really hard for an international student to understand the rules of Twitter. In my country there are seldom people use Twitter; instead, People more addict to Facebook. Therefore, it becomes a really big challenge for me to get start with Twitter.
I found something interesting: In the new social media world, there are no "mannual" or textbook"" for people to follow. People learn how to use social media by their own experiences or other peoples' sharing. So, it really takes time and effort if you want to be a expert of new social media.
Even though I'm still trying to understand the rules and logics of Twitter, I feel so lucky to get a chance to learn social media. By doing so, I can get more opportunities in the future job.
P.s. Can anyone explain what is "# and @" in Twitter? I can not find any explinations on the web. I would really appriciate if anyone can explain it for me:)
I rarely use twitter since I have Facebook to interact with social networks, have blogs to get my opinion expressed, have cell phones to call and text my friends. So why Twitter? After two weeks of experience, I think twitter is an essential social media tool. It's more than a microblogging. Twitter is a great way to keep track of news. Also, as long as I search #, I can find out public attitudes and opinions on certain issue. For example when I searche #NMDL, I know what other classmates are doing with it. Follow a company and get answers really fast. Twitter is a consice format, but different from Facebook and Blog. I think they can feed each other and I'll use twitter more often and promote my blog.
I think this class gives students such an interactive way to communicate with their fellow classmates and professors. I wish more of my classes had all the opportunities this does for communication. Using twitter for more than socializing with friends is kind of new to me and this class is making it a whole lot easier. Since I'm not used to hashtagging for classes, I always forget to do it in this class.
I'm really looking forward to the #DigitalChat this Friday. I've never been involved in one so this will again be new to me.
Twitter can be useful once you have built up a good deal of followers. Its getting to that point where you have a good number of followers that’s the tricky part. When you first start out, at least for me, I feel like I’m almost talking to myself because I only have one follower. So it feels almost like a ponzi scheme where the real benefits go to the people at the top who have the most followers. Accept on sites like twitter anyone can build a large following which does give you a reason to keep working on your tweeting skills and gaining the interest of others. It’s very cool how we can use this social media for class. I think that the future will bring more of this type of communication to education as it allows for immediate back and forth discussion with other students and professors which is how learning works.
I'm one of those people that jumped on the Twitter hype roughly around the time it really started to pop off. It has been quite the entertainment really as far as social networking goes. I go to twitter to get anything from the news, to breaking news, to sporting news, recipes, foods, and anything else really that interests me. It seems like somewhere around the world there are always a few people with the same train of thought as myself at that particular moment. I think it is unique and simple compared to Facebook, which involves more networking. Twitter is a simple few step process and you have completed you twittering for that instance. It’s a great tool, I also think it's going to be a fun way to communicate not only with the professors of this class but also the students.
Twitter isn't commonly used in China than here, but it is still very popular in China. Even though Chinese people don't use Twitter usually, they have their own "Chinese twitter" called "weibo", and it is very popular. "Weibo" in english means short blog, in "Weibo", user only can taxt 140 words maximum per message; they can freely add photo and vedio for their message. I think the reason it becomes popular is similar as Twitter. Unlike blog, "weibo" and Twitter seem more like a short notice or message sharing platforms for users, it is more casual and convenient. Not only this, one big thing which makes "weibo" and twitter popular is many superstars use them too, and users can add whoever they like to be friend, and then, users can see what their favorate stars post. "Weibo" and Twitter make more connection to each other, and make the connections between friends to friends closer, they are also perfect tool to notice users what happened in the world.
I guess I should start using my Twitter. Before this class I was completely against Twitter and never planned on creating an account. Thanks to this class I can see the added value it gives to my personal profile. I will definitely start using Twitter, especially to earn extra credit!
I attended the #DigitalChat last Friday (although I was a little late), and was pleasantly surprised. While the topic was Klout, the commentary and opinions given by the other marketing professionals on the chat were enlightening and just plain smart. With regards to Twitter, I have found that it is hard to bring your Klout score up using only this social media platform. While I have nearly 300 followers on Twitter (more people that I have as "friends" on Facebook), unless a Tweet is controversial or hilarious, getting a retweet or even a mention is like pulling teeth sometimes. This example illustrates how different the platforms of Twitter and Facebook truly are. While one picture of my cat on Facebook can get 20 "likes" and a few nice comments, the same post will barely get any action on Twitter. Therefore, while I love Twitter and try to use it everyday, it is clear that Twitter is much less personal than Facebook, but used together, they can help satisfy both the needs of personal connection and instant news.
I made a Twitter account a couple years ago and was very much an active user. It wasn't until I began indulging myself into school, work and volunteer opportunities when I slowly stopped using Twitter. Most of my friends have ventured over from Facebook to Twitter and are obsessed. I can totally relate, but it wasn't until this class that I began to realize the impact Twitter has not just on my social life, but on my academic and professional life. Beginning to understand the importance of utilizing the internet and all the social media it has to offer is when it set in that I need to be more active with Twitter. Even though I tweeted years back, I still have yet to fully understand how to use Twitter, but thankfully this class has given me a push to use it correctly. With the intense competition for jobs after graduation, Twitter will give me that extra push to set me apart from the rest of my competition.
Tweets and Statuses. two similar, yet very different tools. What I've gained from twitter that I think can be helpful in other aspects of writing is the requirement to be precise. Statuses can have a tendency to drag on and cause readers to lose interest quickly, where as Twitter holds the attention by mandating users get their point across quickly and effectively. As well, the hash tag tool can be used in many ways to promote topics, create trends, or just attempt to add humor in a tweet. While for this class the first two uses are more relevant, we shouldn't ignore our sense of humor, because people enjoy a good laugh.
I love twitter! I am guaranteed at least a chuckle when I read through my twitter feed. Also Twitter has enabled us to connect with celebrities and see that they are normal people too. Kim Karashian will often tweet mirror pics, something I did in middle school, Justin Bieber will tweet about playing some street hockey with his hometown friends. Before twitter, we saw these celebrities almost as robots that don't do normal things like ourselves. However, Twitter has opened our eyes to see that yes they do have extraordinary lives, but they are still normal human beings who enjoy spending time with friends and family.
I think I had my twitter account for about a year before I actually did anything with it. I didn't understand the hashtags. Twitter has its own language, and until you start reading and replying to others, you won't fully understand the context of the situation. I tweet all the time now, probably too much. I constantly find myself telling the world how I feel about it. It’s a way for me, in a somewhat anonyms manner, tell the kid behind me that his feet reek, and if he doesn’t put his shoes on I will put him in a contraption similar to the one in the Saw movies. It’s wonderful; I can release my anger while maintaining a civilized civilian appearence. Or I could take all of my clothes off in a blind rage, but I'll try to contain myself. I use it therapeutically, and I admire those who use it in the same manner, and those tend to be the people I follow. Sure I follow FoxNews and BBC, trying to keep myself updated on political and social events, but in reality I usually only read the posts by the sassy gay kid I sat next to in sophomore year biology. I like that this class communicates through Twitter, it gives me the freedom to be as involved as I want to be.
Twitter is my favorite type of social network. I like that it is more about daily activities rather than large events to post a status about. I can always count on a good laugh when looking at all of my friends tweeting because they are less likely to censor what they tweet. However, I can see this hurting many people in the long run when trying to apply for jobs. It is so easy for young people to tweet what they are thinking in an instant, but these careless individuals need to take the emotion out of their social networking.
Twitter is used a lot at the company I intern for to tweet promotions daily. It is amazing how many people retweet them in order to get the deal. Twitter is great in this aspect because so many more people can be reached more quickly than ever before.
I remember taking my first class at MSU when I was a freshman. At that point I had heard of Twitter, but I had no idea how it worked or why people used it. To me, Twitter was just an oversimplified version of Facebook. In that class, though the professor introduced our class to something that would develop into the social media giant that Twitter is today. It is amazing the developments that the site has made throughout it's time. It is evident that Twitter is not just a trend, but here for the long hall.
On that note, using platforms like the the #NMDL tag is a great way for professors and students to be connected, especially when there are as many students as there are in the NMDL course. Twitter can be used to quickly narrow down a niche of interest in any subject and connect people that would not have otherwise found each other. I think everyone has gained followers by tweeting on a trending topic. How else would these people have develloped an interest in what we had to say?
Twitter: User Friendly
To me Twitter is the most user friendly of all the social media platforms I have used. I was actually forced into signing up for Twitter on spring break two years ago and I have been hooked every since. You can use it as little or as much as you want. You can be as funny, serious, informative, or pointless as you want. Twitter has become a main source of information for me. I now get game scores, news, and other information just by scrolling through Twitter on my phone. I have even helped my dad who is terrible with technology on Twitter. Although he doesn't tweet, he finds it very user friendly and easy to use. I have already seen many of my classmates tweeting about the #NMDL homework and I will continute to do so also. It is a very easy, non invasive way to communicate with people and it is so easy to use!
I think twitter is a great invention. Because it's actually breaking down the function of social media. We can view Facebook as a comprehensive functional social media, on which you can share and comment on status, images, videos and blogs... in other words, you can do everything a social media enable you to do. Twitter is essentially a social media only focus on sharing and commenting on status. It sounds hard to compete with the strong play Facebook that has exactly the same function, but Twitter succeeded! As I mentioned in "5 things I want to learn from the course", I'm very interested in what people actually need from social media and from different social medias. In China, there're Chinese version of Facebook (Renren) and Twitter (Weibo), they are both very popular but not exclusive, because of the different networks on them. Networks on Renren are mainly college students, classmate. Networks on Weibo are usually between opinion leaders, celebrities and internet users. How about F and T? Is the difference more on motivations rather than the composition of networks? That's an interesting question.
As this class teaches me more and more about the significance of twitter; one aspect of the site continues to jump out at me. The value of the hash tag is enormous to grow as an effective tweeter. My elementary tweeting skills lead me using the hash to be creative and funny, but not to join trends. This has left me stagnant as a tweeter and limited my ability to grow in my social media ventures. I look forward to continuing our Klout competition to see how my score continues to grow. I look for my evolution of tweeting to promote my already increasing Klout score and develop a better understanding of the twitter world!
Thanks for the information! I really need the exra push to get out there and start using twitter! I recently signed up for Twitter (during the lunch hour of the first in-person class) and I need to jump in. This class and the conversations on Twitter will be a great way to begin my twitter journey and soon I will think nothing of Tweeting my family and friends. I'm very excited about it and will make a goal of participating more in the conversation.
Twitter really is a unique social network. One of the most attractive parts for me is the 140-character limitation, which forces brevity and discourages long rants. However, while a great way to share information, it’s a bit more restrictive for discussion. While discussion is possible, it can sometimes be difficult with the character limitation. Despite this drawback, though, the hashtags provide a great way to keep track of content on specific topics without scrolling through the entire newsfeed, and being able to follow news sources allows for a quick method of scanning headlines from a variety of sources. Ultimately, convenient engagement is key, and Twitter provides an excellent platform to do so.
Where in the world would i be without Twitter. I joined the social network during my high school years but at the time it wasnt really much of anything and i didnt really know much about it. I thought it was a poor mans facebook and that it was only a matter of time that it would be a thing of the past. The problem that i believe existed at the time was that nobody really knew how to go about using it and in addition to that Facebook was still growing at a fast rate. The idea was kind of foreign to everyone that it never really took off, but once people started getting bored of Facebook they expanded their horizons into Twitter.
To see where it once was and what it has become now is beyond me. I never thought that people would rely so much on it 5 years ago, as some businesses are pretty much built off of it now. Im glad to see what it has become and am even more curious to see where it will head. People are getting their news so much faster than they used to and that can be attributed to Twitter. But to really hit it big they need to keep innovating and i believe they will.
I just made a twitter account for this course. A vast majority of my friends have it but it was never something I was super interested in having. However after attending the class session, and figuring out how very low my klout score was I am beginning to understand the importance of having an internet presence. Im still trying to figure out the ins and outs of twitter, but thank goodness I have a bunch of friends that are helping me use it correctly. With the market being as competitive as it is, the utilization of social media such as Twitter is considered an assest and I hope that through this class I will be able to use it correctly.
Personally, I am not a huge Twitter user. However, I feel that it is critical for me to start utilizing it more often. It is a great tool for advertising classes to use. It is a huge part of the advertising world, so it is important that people become aware with how to use it and how to use it for advertising purposes. Twitter is more instant than Facebook and other social media outlets, and since consumers love instant feedback, Twitter is becoming more popular.
