Social Media, Twitter

Consider sharing it with your friends.

Twitter is a funny social network. They say you can use Twitter for whatever you want. And that's true. For this class we want to use it to carry on conversation with our students. That's why we use the hashtag #NMDL and we tweet at you, and expect you to do the same.

Twitter in this case is a great way to share information with you the student. It's also a great way to interact, and have a conversation related to our class.

You have a Twitter extra credit opportunity this Friday as Ingenex Digital Marketing (my company) is hosting a #DigitalChat from 3-4 PM EST on the topic of Klout. A perfect topic for all you who want to win a trip to Google, and win the Klout competition that Michal Lorenc has set up.

I hope you participate in the #digitalchat. You can see some info on our past digital chats by visiting our digital marketing blog. You'll notice, we have been keeping track of the chats using Storify. Like that?

So what do I want from you students. Start following the #NMDL tag. And follow your instructors and the class Twitter. Follow us all: @msunewmedia @mlorenc @mehraban @3pointross @grahamdavis and follow more like @ingenex

So how can we better use Twitter in this class? Share the resources you post on the class site to Twitter and use the #NMDL tag. Ask questions. Give encouragement. Promote cool events that relate to social media. RT things your profs say, and other things related to MSU or our class. Follow and engage with other students.

Get in the game with Twitter. Time for Week 2.

I had a twitter a year and a half ago and decided to delete it. Now that i have my twitter back, its quite easy to gain more followers back and get known. This week we touched on blogging, but i feel twitter can also be a great way for companies to interact with their customers and get a feel for how they feel about their products. Social media is increasing rapidly and twitter is become more and more popular just because it allows you to interact with celebrities and companies. It would be interesting to start using twitter more for this class to hear other student's views on certain topis.

I'm still new to twitter and must say I find it awkward to use. I'm never sure what to tweet to people. People tell me to just start tweeting anything but telling people what's on my mind or where I'm at is not something I find interesting. Even on facebook I rarely post statuses and mainly use it for chatting and posting up pictures.  I made the twitter for  class, but still do not know how to expand my connections. Even if I did I would not really ever know what to tweet. Hopefully this will change over time but starting is definetly awkward for me. However, I did find that being able to follow celebrities as being an interesting feature of twitter. I can see how twitter would play a big role in connecting them with their fans. But for people like me who does not have a big following I'm not sure how much I will continue to use it.

Student

Ever since my first introduction to Twitter during my Freshman year, I have fallen in love.  The best thing about Twitter is that you can use it in whatever way you want, whether it is to share news, learn about your favorite celebs, interact with fans or share things to make people laugh, the world of possibilities with Twitter is endless.  Although it can be used in many great ways, Twitter still has its drawbacks.  Many people use it to "hate" on others by getting into arguments, just to fill up others' feeds with useless and hurtful language.  I attempt to do my best to stay out of arguments and to not send personal "sub-tweets" for others to see unless I feel that others will benefit/ find them funny/ have a purpose.

For this class in particular, we can use Twitter in a variety of ways.  We can connect with others in our class using the #NMDL to make new friends, ask questions about assignments, or share insight about our class.  We can also use Twitter to share articles with others that we find interesting regarding social media and demonstrate to others just how great this class is.  Connecting professionally, we can talk to our professors and have them introduce us to their business connections, as well.  All in all, Twitter will be very useful in this class and I hope to utilize its versatility to the fullest extent possible.

Twitter is definitely not my forte. I wasn't even planning on creating a Twitter account until I took a class that required me to do so, and since then I haven't read, retweeted or tweeted anything. When it comes to twitter it is my weakest social media. Facebook I'm great at, been doing it for over 5 years, Instagram, sure I love taking pictures and sharing it with other people, but Twitter? I don't know what #hastags or @reply is...until that class. But I have to say that even after taking a class that required me to create a new account and use it, I never felt the need or want to keep on tweeting. It might be because I don't have anything to say and 90% of the time you tweet about what's on your mind or what's been going on in your life. Of course you can @reply a tweet you've read but I was never a follower type. However, everyone's using Twitter nowadays, celebrities, artists, even companies. And in order to keep up with what's going on in the world, it seems like Twitter is the answer.

Admittedly, I am ashamed of my lackluster Twitter presence.  I remember sitting in the first NMDL class when Professor Mehreban asked us to follow him on Twitter and encouraged us to tweet about the class.  I kept thinking, "Oh, no- anything but Twitter.  Facebook, yes. Instagram, sure.  But please not Twitter."  Reason being, I had not looked at my Twitter account in over a year.  I thought I must be the only one in the class who didn't have a Twitter app on their iPhone.  I was afraid of being judged by all four professors as they monitored the live feed and would surely look at my account and see I had neglected to Tweet for quite some time.

I first created my Twitter account in college (circa 2008, maybe?).  The entire realm of social media fascinated me.  As an undergraduate student studying public relations, I knew about it and created a Twitter before a lot of my friends even had an idea about what a Tweet was.  I was no expert, but I knew more about it than a lot of others.  I even did a presentation at a luncheon with more than 50 businesspeople in attendance, speaking about how to use facebook, twitter and other social media in business.

Twitter has come a long way since then, and I honestly feel lost.  I need to get back in the game and make it a habit to Tweet as much as I Facebook.  This class gives me a good opportunity to do so.  I understand the impact social media like Twitter can have, along the networking benefits.  I plan on using Twitter to connect with those around me, share and view interesting information, stay in the know about social media (and of course, help improve my Klout score).  My fiance, on the other hand, uses Twitter solely to catch up on the latest sports happenings.  We can all use Twitter in our own way.  They say "The world is your oyster."  Maybe the saying should be, "Twitter is your oyster."

Twitter has revolutionized the way we share information. In the Twitter world the speed in which news and information travel is incredible. People no longer watch television to get the news; they simply check their twitter feed. This of course only applies to the active users on twitter. Especially since twitter allows you to customize or filter out information you don’t want to hear about it provides a convenience factor that is unmatched. Additionally twitter narrows the distance between people who would other wise never come into contact. For example twitter allows normal people to have social interactions with celebrities or influential people. Both of these aspects of twitter allow us to have a very unique class, in that the instructors are able to interact with the students in a medium that is informal and comfortable to students. Not only are there interactions, the spreading of information is much quicker and allows students to see what others have to say about specific topics creating an interactive virtual class setting.

The evolution of twitter is interesting to me. When I first got a twitter I did so because I wanted to follow my favorite music artists. That way I could see when they were releasing new music or mixtapes or if they were coming to a close location for a performace. Now twitter has become more of a professional social network. Sometimes, I wonder if I should have a personal twitter account and a professional twitter account. Usually anything I say I twitter I try to filter so that I don't sound inappropriate, but I don't always sound professional on my twitter either. I do believe that twitter is a great way to promote because you can follow just about any type of company/ person that you want now. It is a great way for companies to promote sweepstakes or deals, and heard positive or negative feedback from their customers/consumers. It is a great way to engage without saying to much and losing interest of others following.

I was fully against twitter ever since it was created until this class. I thought it was just a way for people to know each and everything someone was doing, however I was wrong. I have learned that Twitter can allow you to connect with companies that you would never have the chance to any other way. I am able to see what companies are doing without having to search the internet and read articles. It has also helped me understand the social media world in a way that I would of never imagined. I hope to keep building my Twitter knowladge and create a Twitter that will help other people, but yet be an influence throughout the internet.

Twitter seems to become more visible in the world everyday. One example that I have noticed is ESPN’s use of Twitter. They report almost any interesting comment that comes from an athlete’s Twitter account. This shows just how different it has made the world. An athlete can type one statement, press tweet, and their entire public perception can be changed forever. Twitter is a powerful tool but its consequences can be both positive and negative.

I had twitter few one year ago but I am rarely use it. Since I need it for this class and everyone keeps saying that twitter is a very useful online tool, now I am going to use it more often. I just went ot my twitter and realize that I do not understand how to use it. I have no idea of some of the icons such as @ and #. After looking at other people's posts and profiles, I am more used to it now. Hopelly, I will become mor eporfessional after having this calss.

Student

The amazing thing about Twitter, to me, is its speed. Numerous times I find myself reading a tweet aloud to my friends and they end up finishing the sentence or statistic, because they read the same tweet 5 minutes earlier. Twitter is making it harder and harder to be the first one to report a story.  When something catastrophic or amazing occurs, Twitter absolutely blows up.  For example, the referees that made the incorrect call in the recent Monday Night Football game. Not even 5 minutes after the call, Twitter was exploding with comments, jokes, and thoughts on the call. Twitter gives you the ability to get live news/scores/updates all in one place, on your smart phone, making sure that you’re never a step behind.

I was fully against Twitter a year ago. I had an honors research seminar on social media and one of the requirements for the class was having and using a Twitter account. After less than one month of having this account, I was hooked. Twitter is not only a good way to keep in touch with friends, but also a great way to make contact with companies. I have personally used Twitter to tweet a clothing store after waiting 2 weeks for a shipment to send. The next day, the item shipped. Using it to make connections and find out about relevant events is also useful. It seems there is always a new way to use Twitter to your benefit.

Student

Twitter has become a very popular source for social media in the recent years. Not only does twitter allow you to keep in touch with friends and family but many people have started using twitter to help build their professional careers. Companies all over the world have been building their twitter profiles, where they post company information, job openings, up coming events and other company news. Twitter is a great way to keep up with the ever changing new all around the world as well. I find most of my current events via twitter. Not everyone has enough time to sit down at 6:00 to watch the news every night. Luckily, if you follow your favorite news stations, you will be able to quickly view the top stories in a matter of seconds. I like how we use twitter to communicate for this class. Twitter is an easy way to get an answer to any question. Due to its accessability, it makes staying on top of our homeowrk and assignments very easy.

Student

I think twitter is definitely becoming the mostly used social media site these days. Not only is it used for social and personal reasons, it is also a great way to learn more about companies and other news in the world. Being able to follow large companies you can keep up on what is going on in their business. Additionally, it can be used to look up news stations to get knowledge other than reading articles in the newspaper or watching it on television. I love that we can use twitter during class to find out information as well, it's a great way to keep in contact with professors in a more unprofessional yet professional way.

Student

It's no secret that Twitter is creeping its way to the top of the Social Media realm. I am still in the transition of using Twitter on a day to day basis but I am finding that as I engage more and more with prominent Twitter users, companies and brands, it is easier to tweet at and with these major influencers. Through my own personal twitter, I am still struggling with not only re-tweeting posts. I need to implement my resources from NMDL, learn from my peers and integrate what I learn online to my posts on Twitter. I hope that with practice, I can start to create a presence for myself amongst my peers in the NMDL course. As far as Klout, I am so happy that I have learned about this very helpful and effective site. Not only am I turned on to it now, I have also introduced Klout to my friends who are always in a constant battle with me to 'reach the highest score' that we can. It is so interesting to track my social media presence among all my sites and it is very rewarding and satisfying when I climb higher and higher with my Klout score. Aside from it being rewarding and fun to track my score, I hope to analyze and use my increase in score to learn about what I am doing right and continue to grow. I will continue to follow and am looking forward to everything that NMDL and Ingenex Digital Marketing continue to engage us with. From #digitalchats to the use of #NMDL, I will remain engaging in everything I can to grow my social media presence.

I entered the twitter game about two years ago, and i have loved it everyday since. I think as our society continues to move into wanting everything quicker and easier than ever before, twitter will continue to rise. For me, its everything in one place, all on my twitter feed. Any friends that post pictures, events, something funny or just a thought, it is all in one place for me and i think that is why i love it so much and that is why so many people are moving over to twitter. As far as using it for this class, this is something i would love to do more of and explore. I use it in my church enviroment and for social reasons, but expanding my tiwtter game this way could be very beneficial. I love this idea, and i think i might just try it!

Student

When I first made my Twitter account, I only tweeted once every few days. Since then, I have slowly become sort of addicted to Twitter and it has replaced facebook as my favorite social media site. I like scrolling through the feed from time to time and seeing what my friends and my favorite celebrities are up to. I think it's pretty cool that we get to communicate with athletes and singers that we would normally never be able to talk to.

I think the best part of Twitter is how interactive it allows users to be, including corporate Twitter accounts. I've heard of many instances where somebody will complain about a company on Twitter and that company will respond trying to correct the situation. The popularity of social media sites has made it possible for businesses to use these sites for advertising and portraying a good public image.

Student

I have found out over time that twiiter can be used to reach a large audience. The use of hastags makes it easy to promote a certain event or topic. I personally use twitter to promote events. I am an event promoter and use twitter along with my friends and groups of other promoters, use hashtags to get an event trending. If you have enough people that influence enough people then that topic can become a trend. The use of trends allows people to see what others are talking about. Twiiter is also a good social media outlook because you use it to relay short, quick messages to the people who follow you. By making your profile public, you can infulence a larger group.

Student

I agree with the majority of the comments posted before this as well. When twitter first came out I was confused about the site and did not think that it would have any meaning to me. Over time I signed up and became hooked at reading all of the tweets. To be honest, I do not tweet as much as I used to, however, I love reading other peoples tweets. I also love that you can follow the news, celebrities, and certain business's. It is a great tool to spread the word about sales at your favorite store and about cool events happening in your town. I think that twitter has really helped social media grow in a positive way regardless of negative tweets.

Student

Like many people have said before me, I just did not understand the purpose behind Twitter. My thought of it was simply that it was a platform of people constantly updated their "statuses." And, from my experience with Facebook statuses, it was a stream of pointless mundane moments in a person's daily life. As I began working in the professional world, I began to understand how Twitter worked, and how useful it was to get your message out there and around the world.

I have had my Twitter account for almost two years, and I recently became active on it in the past 2 months. I find myself on Twitter more when I'm at my internship than anywhere else, because in this way, professionals can see me for who I truly am, but in a more professional setting. Don't get me wrong, a lot of people I know still use Twitter as their diary, but NMDL has taught me that, if used properly, it can be a great resource of YOU on the web.

The only thing I would change about Twitter is to add a "notification" section. I rarely reply to other's comments (or I reply a week later) because I forget to check the "Connect" section of my Twitter.

Student

As many others, up until 2 years ago I wasn't even on twitter.  A friend of mine had me create one during class one day and since then my usage has grown quickly.  I think Twitter is one of the greatest resources in keeping up to date with news, political events, social events etc. for a student or someone who uses social media a lot.  It enables me to follow bands I like and read inside scoops of where they will be playing next or when a new song will be released, long before a magazine publishes the news.  I typically don't watch the news because it seems to drag on and it also has lots of topics that don't interest or have any use to me.  Twitter allows me to follow only the news and people I want to know about.  Because of the character limit it makes every post easily readable and cuts right to chase on what I want to know.  It's also a quick way for me to share thoughts and pictures with my friends/followers. Twitter has the ability to make you feel linked to many people just through a hashtag. I think Twitter is only going to become more and more popular as people realize all the advantages and how beneficial it is to join the 'tweeting' world.

I am an avid Twitter user. I went from being on Facebook 24/7 to being on Twitter 24/7. I like twitter becuase its quick and convenient. Quick updates on what friends, family, and celebrities are doing. I can conveniently scroll through the tweets anytime I want. Compared to Facebook , Twitter has more of an entertainment factor for me. My friends and I will retweet each other crazy tweets from celebrities that someway fit in to our lives. I also follow mutliple marketing companies. One in particular has really sparked my attention with all the interesting articles they tweet about marketing and advertising. I have kept them in mind for possible job opportunities after graduation. What never occured to me was to tweet them back with an interesting, relatted article. This class has taught me that Twitter can also be used for business purposes, networking, and job opportunities. I plan to engage more with these marketing companies in hopes to land some job opportunities!

Student

Ever since I first began using Twitter I have been an avid user. One might even say I am addicted (that one being my father). I have viewed it as a positive way to interact and connect with your friends. Despite the arguments downplaying the legitimacy of what a user may actually tweet, it can truly be a useful tool. Many businesses and marketers have taken advantage of the accessibility and wide use of Twitter. Numerous professional and college athletic programs have their Twitter handle on their field or court and promote hash tags and marketing contest during the events. The use of Twitter to allow a user to be a part of an event and be closer to the action has impacted so much and it will continue to grow. Our academic use of Twitter is a perfect example of how Twitter can be used to engage learning and provide information quickly and efficiently.

I've found hunting down brand info on Twitter has been a good resource, and has offered me some possibilities for my final project.  Maybe I'll start using it to promote my blog?...

Student

Just a general comment I wanted to make - there's been a bountiful amount of comments pertaining to Facebook versus Twitter in terms of news release to privacy to usage. Why don't you do what I do? Just use both! Haha. I have my peers on my Facebook and I use my Twitter for news release, updates, and ranting about the most useless nonsense that comes into my head.

Student

Twitter is used in a wide variety of ways. Somebody once told me, "Twitter is just having a conversation with yourself hoping somebody would jump in." For the average user it's a place to post a quick thought, experience, or daily activity. Whereas Facebook is there to hold conversation, debate, and thoughts. While I wasn't able to join in the digital chat I have been using #NMDL in all of my tweets pertaining to the class. Recently I asked Ross about a topic I was hoping to cover in this week's blog and earlier in the week was posting concerning my Klout score and expansion to Google+ and other social networks. I love that you can follow companies, celebrities, and other figures to receive any information you desire. For instance on the weekends I can follow sports writers and football teams for all incoming news as soon as it's released. Then I can use Facebook to scream about my teams performance and receive agreement from my peers.

Student

It is very interesting how there is such a variety of ways that people use twitter. It's such a simple platform with a pretty plain concept, however, all kinds of people have found a way to use it and tailor it to their social needs. For example, celebrities use it to update their fans about their life and their upcoming projects. While companies use twitter often to promote their current campaigns or interact with customers and their questions. Then there's us regular users that often use twitter to simply post thoughts, insights, resources, and to interact with the celebrities and brands mentioned above.

All of these different twitter-types can come together and be utilized in this class. Just by simply putting #NMDL in our tweets, we immediately connect to anyone in the course as well as others that have followed the course due to its influence and innovation. We can then share relevant information that we find with these followers, promote ourselves and our ideas, as well as network with others in this field. But, we also can't forget that twitter does have a fun side. While it is very helpful to utilize #NMDL to send out information or interact on a professional level, Twitter is also inherently fun and silly. Adding twitter handles, sharing fun quotes, posting a instagram photo, all of those things are also part of the twitter eperience and I hope continue to be a part of this course.

Student

I'm glad you touched on companies as well as celebrities. Some users of Twitter may follow their favorite actor to feel like they're more engaged and up-to-date on the movies they're starring in. Companies, such as Apple who I saw a promoted tweet on Twitter from, use Twitter to release information of updates, apps, and future plans to all customers that follow.

In a way we can think of using #NMDL as a virtual classroom. Since this class is primarily online, we can call it hybrid if we wish, then our interaction is immediately limited. But, with the use of our social networks (primarily Twitter and these blogs) we're able to share opinions or thoughts on a certain topic as well as respond to one another of any questions.

Student

I came into the #digitalchat a little late, but I was still able to partcipate, and it was quite interesting. It is true tha you can use twitter for whatever you want. At first I was skeptical about twitter. I thought that it was just an annoying way for people to talk about their lives by pretty much using a facebook status without all the extras. Not only is it that, but it's also a great professional tool. It's a great way to advertise and market a company especially to the younger generations. I know that I follow target, and other companies and I can keep up with different promotions. I think that it's a great idea for this class, because it is easy to keep updated with what's going on. Also, you can see what everyone else is saying all right there. People are typically fast to respond, and a lot more people engage in social media.

Student

I completely agree that people use Twitter in a completely different way than other forms of social media. For me, I don't tweet as much as I change my status on Facebook, but I also have fewer followers. However, I follow a lot of people (most of them public figures) just to stay connected to the world in real-time. It's almost like Twitter has become the modern day news ticker. I get up-to-date information as it comes in, even before it makes it to the blogs or national/local news stations. As a personal example, this summer I looked out of the window of my office building [in DC] to see cops blocking off the entire street. What do I do? Go to Google! But, even Google didn't have news about what was happening. So, my next stop was Twitter. On Twitter, there were comments from the company itself stating why the building and streets were closed. Even later that day, local news stations had not covered the story. It seems as if Twitter doesn't really know/care how people use their platform. If they did, they would tout the fact that it has more to offer than just spontaneous rants from the average Joe. To me Twitter is the pioneer of instant news.

Student

I have a love-hate relationship with Twitter. I love it because it is easy to get breaking news and sports scores; it enables me to be a little bit more open with my Tweets considering I dont have nearly as many followers as I do friends on Facebook; plus, I like it because its easy to use with no sneaky little privacy issues. However, I still find myself heavily relying on Facebook. I think because I have been using it for so much longer, it has become like checking my email! It's fun posting on other peoples wall, liking pictures, and "liking" things, but it also causes issues such as privacy, ads, viruses, etc. I do believe Twitter will, if not already, become more popular than Facebook in the future. It is much more current and user friendly even for people who don't quite fully understand it.

I think the use of Twitter for this class is an ingenious idea now that we have the luxury of immediately going to Tweets directly relating to this class.

Student

The issues of how complex Facebook is versus Twitter is a valid argument. While on Facebook you do have to think about privacy issues, who you're adding, etc but on Twitter you can choose to follow anyone and everyone. If you're into sports - Twitter has got you covered! If you're into technology - I'm pretty sure Twitter has some users designated to that topic. Breaking local news? Twitter! Interesting thought though - on Facebook when somebody completely random adds you then you tend to think to yourself, "who is this? Why are you adding me?" But when somebody random follows you on Twitter then you smile and think, "oh they want to see what I'm saying!" and you smile. We all smile.

Using social media, especially Twitter, is crucial to the modern world of business, advertising, marketing, public relations and more. I have embraced these new tools and find them fun, helpful, useful and interesting. I enjoy keeping up on current events, finding out what my friends are doing, learnind about what is going on in this class and how I can be involved in my community. However, I have recently found Twitter to be frustrating. It demands contant attention, like hourly or more, to stay relevant. For example, I missed the announcement about the extra credit this week, because I didn't visit the class blog for two days. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaning about missing out, I just wish to use this as an example of how fast social media is and how easy it is to get left behind. Newspapers used to update the public on current events daily, weekly, monthly or more. So not reading a newspaper for two days wouldnt have put a person that far behind the times. All of the events and discussions were put in one place at one time for people to absorb. Now days, the newest topic of discussion refreshes by the minute. As a busy employee and student I find that I am always trying to catch up. Articles that were posted this morning are already so far down my newsfeed that I never see them. I wonder, how this is affecting the stress level of our generation? Are we actually more knowledgable about the world around us?

Student

Before this class, I was a bit of a Twitter-hater.  I just didn't get it.  But now that I have been using my account for the past few weeks and have a better understanding of its capabilities - I love it!  I find myself checking Twitter for news updates instead of going to the internet.  It is so up to the minute and I can read the top news stories in less than 140 characters, so I am up to speed on current events in record time.  But so far the best Twitter interaction I have had is with my classmates and instructors.  Not only am I able to get help and help others by answering questions, but I am getting to know everyone too by following them.  This is the first online course I have taken and was concerned about connecting with people, but Twitter has helped to make this possible and I am making lasting connections without meeting people face to face!

Student

When it comes to social media I am trying to keep facebook for my personal life and Linkedin for my professional life. I have started using Twitter and have posted personal and business comments on it....which I am not sure will work for me.

The company I work for does not discourage the use of social media, in fact all of our reporters have blogs and tweet. They do encourage sound judgement...not a shock. What ever you post be sure it reflects well on you, the company and would be okay if it showed up as tomorrow's news headline.

I tweeted for business yesterday at our CIO event and I was not comfortable with it yet. I would write the tweet and then rewrite. I have heard to many lawyers give presentations on the horror stories that were created by employees for themselves and the companies they represent when using social media. As Derek says in his post you can use Twitter for whatever you want. I am gravitating to using Twitter for business and my professional "brand". Ok, ok I know that means no drunk Tweeting.

Student

I really enjoy being on Twitter. I've noticed I am on Twitter way more than I'm on Facebook now. One of the things I really like about Twitter is that I can read about news as it's happening. It's a great way to stay up to date with what is going on in our world. I also really enjoy following celebrities and sports players. I think it is really exciting that these people can follow, retweet and mention you. It just makes you feel more connected to them, which is pretty cool. I love that I have Twitter on my phone because I can tweet my thought instantly.

I'm excited for the extra credit opportunity as well. I think Klout is an awesome webiste and I want to know how other people feel about it. I want to learn ways that I can raise my Klout score, so maybe I can gain some insight from this chat!

I agree with so many of the comments here...I definitely see the potential of this platform for so many various reasons, and many of which may yet to be realized. I also completely understand the addictive nature of Twitter, as well as so many other social media tools in general. However, I am still straddling the fence when it comes to embracing full integration of Twitter. In large part, this may have to do with the fact that social media has not been adopted at my place of business. So five days a week, I am not "connected" really at all. Hard to find value in something I can and do go without for the majority of my week. And given Twitter's fast-paced nature, by the time I can connect, I feel as though I'm already behind. My mind remains open though, and I am open too, to the potentially countless benefits of getting in the game with Twitter.

When my phone makes the “Tweet-Tweet” sound I drop whatever I’m doing and quickly check what Twitter notification I got. Twitter is personally my favorite Social Media outlet and I use it pretty much daily if not hourly!! I like the fact that you are limited on how many characters you can use because it keeps people messages short and sweet and usually either interesting or funny. Another thing I like about Twitter is the ability to follow businesses that use it for promotions and other instant information that will save money the next time I find myself in that business. Twitter saves time, money and even makes me laugh on a regular basis, which is why it is my “go-to” Social Media outlet. #NMDL

I was skeptical of Twitter for a long time but now I find myself using it as much as facebook. To me it acts as a social platform as well as a news source. I typical read 5 to 6 news stories a day from tweets. As the presidential race heats up it has been really interesting to watch both candidates (regardless of political beliefs) engage and use twitter to promote themselves.

I typically find myself on Twitter more then I do on Facebook and its for reasons such as this becuase I can follow people who tweet useful things. Unlike Facebook where more than not I'm reading a status that I would rather not have read or seen pictures I wish I had never seen. Twitter if used properly can be the best resource to stay connected to the news, sports, anything you're interested in, its a great tool when used effectively.  It's great for this class as well as I'm able to keep up with everything going on in this class as well as learn for professionals in the industy.

I have always criticized people who spend a lot of time on social media websites. I tried to ignore Facebook, never logged in to Twitter and only added people, as friends then do nothing on Linkedin. But now, I even have a @klout account and I can’t stop myself checking what my score is. In my ADV486 class, my team is promoting a non-profit organization in Lansing, Greater Lansing Food Bank @GLFoodBank so I am always on twitter, uploading pictures, letting our audience know about the updates. To be honest, I really like that. At first I thought all these tweets and posts and likes and comments are just to show off but I completely changed my mind. All these activities are actually quite fun, and interesting.

After all, advertising is my major and social media is very impactful for audiences in these days. I better learn more.

So true - I'm glad you're learning more about social media, especially while working for a great cause with the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Keep me posted if you ever need a retweet from me or @TruscottRossman on Twitter; we have a pretty strong Lansing following!

I am pretty sure I will need some help. My first topic in my blog will be about Greater Lansing Food Bank and their new project, The Garden Project. I ll add more details regarding the topic in my blog. I try to add #nmdl whenever I tweet about The Garden Project and Pay It Forward Challenge. But sometimes I cant because there is only 140 characters that I can use after all :)

Being that I'm new to Twitter, I must admit sometimes I feel out of the loop. But I am trying to follow it more often and get back into this revolution called social media. I for one am enjoying tweeting on trending topics and following Twitter accounts that relate to what I like.  With that being said pertaining to this class I especially like how I can keep up with what's happening and stay connected with all subjects related to social media. I love how I can tweet a question or concern to the New Media Driver's License page and I'll get a response in a respectable time frame, because let's face it...even though emails are trying to stay in the game, they are becoming a little outdated. And that's how I usually keep in touch with professors.  I do agree that Twitter can be used for whatever I want, I just have not grasped on to the phenomena that is Twitter yet.  But I can certainly say I like what it is so far.

I was struggling to keep up with twitter up until two weeks ago when I got my first smart phone. Now, I'm finding it easier to reply and retweet in real time instead of when I got home to my computer. It has completely changed the way I use twitter and hopefully for the better. It is also easier to post pictures and videos straight from my phone instead of downloading them to my computer and then posting. I would advise instructors to be patient with students. Getting a smartphone for me was a big investment for me, but one that I have found very worthwhile.

Anyone else new to social media on smartphones? Or am I the only one stuck in the early 2000s?!

What app do you use? I really like TweetBot for iPhone, and have heard great things about Plume for Android - but I just used the offical Twitter app when I had an Android phone. I agree though - Twitter works great on mobile devices!

As of just starting my Twitter account no more than a couple weeks ago, I am still piecing together how to utilize Twitter as social resource, let alone an informative one!  Prior to my enrollment in this course I thought of Twitter as essentially a limited form of Facebook where people cluttered space with news of their most recent visit to the grocery store, or how they just brushed their teeth, and let's face it, most of us just don't care. However, after starting to follow various news networks and inspirational people on Twitter, I have realized its importance as a social and informative resource. I have just started following MSU's communication's department on Twitter and have just added our class. Although I'm still getting familiar with the site, I am embracing the opportunity to share fun things with the class and follow university news and information in a new, more engaging format.

In just one week, I have begun to start using my twitter to have conversations with my followers rather than just 100% tell the world about what's going on with me. I've been focusing on interacting more, asking my followers questions allowing them to easily respond. For example, Mumford and Sons released a new album that I am working with for my internship, so I tweeted "Can't stop listening to the new #MumfordAndSons album #Babel, RT if you agree!" I've also asked questions to @msunewmedia and received answers right away. I also like the idea of sharing the resources that we post to the class site to twitter as well, so that our followers can learn more about social media as well and we can recommend them to take the class.
