Social Media

Consider sharing it with your friends.

Earlier this semester Derek talked about the rise of online video. Facebook isn't the only platform where video is gaining momentum. Instgram is seeing an increase in video content and YouTube is getting more engagement as well. Users are searching for "How To" related videos in particular. Some marketors are claiming that all buisiness should start producing howto videos to capitalize on this trend.

Video is expanding in other areas as well, particularly in the creation of new platforms. Several interesting social media sites have sprung up around the idea of video.

There are two in particular I want you to check out, Meerkat and Vine. Meerkat is a new video streaming service where Vine has been around for some time and is a social network for sharing short clips of video.

Check out both platforms and share your thoughts!

I think online video had already become the newest trends in media. Many businesses use online video as part of their promotional strategies. Besides, online video creates a more personal interaction between a business and its customers. The use of both visual effects and sounds is an effective way of gaining a viewers attention. For me, I'd prefer to  click on a video link than it is for them to read a page of text, not only save my time but also more understandable. I think online help us get more fast and easy infirmation, and choose the Meerkat and Vine can let us share life and find out a lot of interesting things.

Student

I think online video is a wonderful and effective way to present a company's main objective! However, I noticed that video streaming has had a decrease in interest. In fact, Vine is closing down! Overall, the idea is excellent;however, the process and performance did not meet expectations. On the other hand I do like Meerkat! It is a cool and different way of online video streaming and hopefully that gains high site traffic as well!

Student

I think online video is exploding for many different reasons. I know a lot of people who just buy Internet and stream all there shows off Netflix, Hulu, Espn, and Hbo instead of buying cable because they cant get the same content for cheaper. With that being said, I think that more websites and shows will be livestreaming more often and companies will start to advertise on these streams. As for the two social media sites you wanted to us to check out, Im not the biggest fan of Meerkat because it is new and not too many people probably use it. Over time, this site could evolve and improve making it more well known and easier to use. Vine on the other hand I have used and I do think it is cool but the videos are so short and quick its hard for me to spend anytime on their website.

Student

Meerkat...I just don't care. I don't care to watch live streams of peoples lives. However, Vine has increasingly been used for more artistic well thought out content, which I appreciate. It has a purpose, a limitation, but still ends up with a lot of varied creative content. I still don't even understand the draw of a streaming service like Meerkat.

Student

I love Vine, it only has 6 secs, nowdays people dont have lot of patients for ads . but vine managed to make it fun

my question is. how to prevent people from rejecting video ads? and whats the best way to boost a YOUTUBE video ads without using facebook. and how does YouTube ads work? Can compant know the ratio of often audiences skip their ads?

Student

I wasn't much of a fan of either really.  Vine was fun for awhile but it got old quick.  Vine to me just got filled up with trash videos.  Also the comunication and interaction on vine was not what I liked compaired to facebook and Twitter.

Student

Online Videos are blowing up. How to videos have taught me so much, when ever anyone asks how to do something I immeditely turn to "How to's" Meerkat wasnt a good fit for me but I found vine to be very funny and a good use of time.

Student

Online video is so popular because it is a platform where you can pretty much find anything to watch whether it being educational, how to, cooking, makeup, movies and so much more.  It is also so relatable to see real people doing the things portrayed. Vine is so popular because of its instant quick videos. I think we can all say when we watch something unless it’s a long movie, for the most part we want to get to the exciting part to get what’s going on. That’s what Vine does, which is why its so popular.  It is also very popular because you don’t need an account to watch the videos. I am not too familiar with Meercat but it seems like you have to have an account. This steers a lot of people away myself included. I think video is very popular but more instant video is even more popular. When Instagram decided to include the creation of short video, it helped gained more popularity for that platform. I especially saw this of various artists’ pages with a preview of a concert which was a great way to promote them.

Student

I love the idea of vine, especially for our instant gratification culture. It gives me a taste of all different categories (i.e.: art, dance, sports, comedy) with only taking 6 seconds of my time per video, unless I watch the loop endlessly. I also like how I can browse the content on the social media site without having to join. It gives the author more views potentially, and for an advertiser, that means it could increase impressions and reach more of its target audience.

I also am a fan of Meerkat's live streaming. I could catch up on a speaker at a conference halfway across the world, the United States, of my own city. This can expand my learning on any subject and be a source for entertainment as well as information. Yet, you have to be a user to be part of the action, which was a bummer for me. I wanted to check out what the company is about before having to join myself. In addition, live streaming is not unique to Meerkat. YouTube now can live stream events (check out #F21ThreadScreen to see this capability), and I can watch this without joining the website.

Student

Online video has definitely become one of the biggest things online and especially with social media. Though I have never used Meerkat before, vine is something that blew up and is still a pretty big pretty. A lot of people use the videos online instead of reading articles on different things. News broadcasts put snippets of their videos online like on facebook or twitter instead of writing about it now.

Student

I can tell that the popularity for videos is exploding. With the creation of Vine, and then Snapchat and Instagram adding video features, the sky is the limit for how popular videos can get. I have never used Meerkat before, however, and I am excited to try it out.

Student

I think online video will continue to trend in the upward direction. Particularly because people find so much truth in video, if we see something recorded or moving, we naturally assume it's real or exciting. This is the opinion of my friends sitting around me and myself. Video is so much more engaging, and there has to be a lot done with it for it to be tampered or false.

Of course, I contradicted and countered with all of the media footage going on lately. The video the media releases are only videos they want us to see, so it's hard to tell whether the information you're getting is false or correct.

Whether they are true or false, it's easy to see that the American people of today would rather believe a 90-second video clip, rather than a well-written article explaining one's thoughts and opinions on a subject or situation. I don't see this changing because I get to converse with children growing up as digital natives in America, and almost every one of them hates reading. I think Meerkat and Vine are great applications because they allow people to express themselves in unique ways that people have never done before. Snapchat is another great social networking tool that people use video to primarily communicate. All of these things are great because they save time and create chared memories between people.

I would like to finally state that I approve of online video and video applications on smartphones, but I will never abuse them because I know how much better it is to read and process the information, rather than watch videos to gain information.

Vine is something I have used for a long time. I never really ever created my own videos but I love watching the funny videos on the popular page. I will sit in my bed at night before I go to sleep and have a few laughs. Vine never fails to provide me entertainment. In these 6 second clips people can get out their thoughs in a quick manner that keeps peoples attention and that is what I believe makes them successful. The opportunity to watch multiple videos in a matter of seconds provides the opportunity to watch a lot of content quickly. Meerkat is something I am not as quite familiar with. People I know do not use it so I have never been a fan of it myself. I checked it out though and it is different. The one thing I do not like about it thought is that you have to have an account to use the app. That steared me away from it right away. With vine, you can watch videos more easily and they are constantly shared, so I think that is what makes them so much more popular.

Student

I have never used these two platforms but I've heard Vine many time before. I think the idea of videoing is good. Video can be more touched than content in the most of time. First reason is it's visual, which means video will leave a deeper impression in audience' mind. Second reason, people can still understand what a video is talking about whitout understand the language in it, and I think this is very important. However, a lot of people are unconfident to make themselves in the video. This problem might cause the user on the platforms like Meerkat and Vine be limited.

Student

Videos online seem to be blowing up, but it still feels like social network sites where video isn't the main focus, are still the biggest. For example, although Youtube is a huge social networking site, you still only seem to hear people talking about Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Although these sites still allow videos, it is not at all their main focus. Apps, such as vine, seem to be slowly dying out. I still check vine ever-so-often, but not like a do Twitter. Videos seem to be less popular becuase they are 1) difficult to make and 2) it is hard to grab someones attention just by a title. Whereas Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will have a short attention grabbing description with a picture and then it's on to te next post. People in this day in age, including myslef, are too impatient to watch several minute long videos. all we seem to have time for is a 100 character post and an image.

Student

I think videos are great! creating video to showcase and show valuable information to buyers in an easy-to-understand medium for everyone. I can one to be crazy about Vine. I notice myself scrolling through it and a couple of hours have gone buy. Though maybe an hour spent if, though im lookign at funny vine, if you were to scroll for an hour of news, sports, school or gernal informtion clips you obtain a lot of information in such a little amout of time. It take out the unnesscary add ons that a lot of comemrical, blog or just gneral articles to promtoe information does. I just downloaded Meerkat but I can see it getting big soon.

Student

After now using both Meerkat and Vine I've come to the conclusion that neither are here to stay. I downloaded and used Vine way back when it first came out around last year and now looking back at it I've realized how far its fallen The app used to be a fun novely where people made interesting videos and certain people became notorious on it for having really great videos and having a massive following. However, today Vine is a wasteland that is taken over by endless what seems like spam. The app no longer has the novelty that it once had. Meerkat however seems fairly new to me and is kind of interesting. I took a look at the app and it looks to me like a live streaming video app. This is a good idea but it has been done before. There are still live video stream sites on the internet somehwere but this one is exclusively for the phone, I guess that's what makes it cool. Overall it seems like a really interesting application. Definitely worth it to check out.

Student

Another online video site I have seen a lot of is Periscope. These online avenues for video are almost making cable TV outdated. I know many people who have 'cut the cord' when it comes to cable and don't subcribe to a service like Comcast or At&T. The social media age means almost everything is recorded, and often times I dont have to watch a show or event to know what happened, I can just check twitter and see what people are saying about it.

Student

Meerkat and Vine seem like interesting video concepts, but I don't think they have the potential to become as popular as other social media platforms. Meerkat seems a bit confusing based on what I've researched. Snapchat is a better way to share videos with a specific audience you choose. Vine has been around for quite some time and seems pretty successful. I've never used it, but see Vines on Twitter pretty often. The six second video limit is a good way to have creative, attention worthy content. I would invest time into Vine, but not Meerkat.

Student

Lots of my friends have Vine account and I know how it works before, but I haven't heared about Meerkat until now. However, it seems like Meerkat is more interesting and it need develop their awareness as well to get more users. And yes online video ir growing very fast and become popular in our social market. May be people in this generation more likely accept watching than reading. After reading this article may start to try this Meerkat and share my experience to other people.

Student

Before reading this blog I have never even heard of Meerkat, but I have heard of Vine. I do not have a vine, but I know that it is very popular and most of my friends and family have one. I just never got into it. After look at Meerkat, it looks like it is more of a live stream video platform. Where as Vine is more of like snapchat or instagram if you will. Online video is growing and has become very popular because they are usually much for interesting the just reading an article.

Student

I had never heard of Meerkat until now. I think it's too similar to the Live section of snapchat to actually catch on. I think it has some potential due to the personal aspect of it, but isn't that just like posting a story on SnapChat? Seems like an idea that has already been created to me. I agree that all businesses should start producing how to videos. I use Youtube and How To blogs 2-3 times a week on average. Multiple companies could really be benefitting from this.

As far as Meerkat and Vine goes, Vine team all the way. Vine is a funny network, I personally don't post on it, but enjoy all the crazy people who do. It's something unique and different that has caught on substantially. Do it for the vine.

Student
I was familiar with Vine but had never heard of MeerKat before. I used to use watch Vines quite a bit, but never posted them myself. I think Snapchat is much more user friendly for short videos as you can really choose your audience. MeerKat looks like it would be more interactive than Vine. I like that you can use Meerkat to live chat with other users, but I think it needs to gain more popularity to be a useful tool.
Student

I agree very strongly with you on this one. Video seems to be taking over the internet, especially as of late. It is by far the most effective way to be heard as well as seen and discovered in today's world. It is also a very popular form of entertainment. In particular, Vine has really taken the entertainment spectrum to a whole new level. It may sound crazy, but people everyday are becoming "internet famous" by producing short 15 second video clips that users find entertaining that end up going viral. As for Meerkat I have only recently heard of the app. However it seems like it definitely has the ability to take off in a similar fashion the way Vine has. To my understanding, Meerkat is primarily used for the streaming of live events, such as concerts and events. I know for me personally I would definitely find this intriguing if a big sporting event that I was interested in, yet for some reason wasn't being televised, I would definitely use Meerkat to check it out. Overall, video is the present and it is the future in my eyes. I believe that it is indeed very important for businesses to catch onto this trend before it is too late. Because it is a very useful way of advertising and marketing, and is only going to keep getting bigger!

Student

Online videos resources are increasing in popularity due to the convience of watching videos in lieu of reading.  Vine is an interesting app that i've heard of for some time.  Having only 6 seconds of video to work with really hinders the use of Vine.

Student

I am familiar with Vine, but I had not heard of Meerkat before. I like Vine because you can just go on the web and look for videos under a certain category or ones that are popular/trending. I think that peoples attention spands are definitely getting shorter becasue so much new information is always being shared and created. I was watching the news and they were comparing peoples attention spans similarly to a gold fish because we are always distracted. I looked up Meerkat and several articles popped up. I thought it was interesting that stars like Jimmy Fallon are using it to live stream their lives. I think that their making it so you can sign in through Facebook is a good idea. I have a billion accounts and I always remember my Facebook one so whenever I can login through that I do. I like Meerkat because there are videos that are different lenths and are more meaningful than Vine. I think Vine is entertaining for a few minutes, but then  I get tired of it. I think Meerkat has more interesting content to watch.

Student

The platform for online video is rising because it grabs attention easily.  I have heard of Vine before, but I have never opened an account and used both Vine and Meerkat before. After looking up these platforms, Meerkat is more as a live stream videos platform, and Vine is more as a social media application that similar to Youtube. Personally, I enjoy watching video ads than reading word ads. Video ads are simple and easier to understand what the storyline of a movie or what products does the company wants to sell. YouTube is the video platform that I am more familiar with. When I need to search for something online, YouTube is the first place that I think of. There are tons of videos shared on YouTube in topics such as makeup or hairstyle tutorials, outfit look-books, and other how-to videos.

Student

Online video is growing because it is more enthrauling, you can do much more with video than you can with a picture or some text. I have used vine, it is pretty entertaining and there are some people put there who can make really great content with just six seconds of video. I haven't used Meerkat however, but it seems really interesting, streaming live video is nothing new, but now you can utilize you smartphone. I feel like this will make video even more interactive, it will add a more personal touch to the videos and make tha=em feel more involving. You can watch the experience someone had in real time, and that would be really cool for live events such as sports, music, etc.

Student

I actually hadn't really heard of Meerkat until now, but I did know a bit about vine. Personally, outside of YouTube, I don't use a whole lot of video services but I think video is always going to be a superior content creator than just pictures. You can say a lot more in a video, it's easier to grab attention, and there's just a lot more versatility. If a business can learn how to effectively use these services and do it in a way that will connect with their target, they can really improve themselves and expand their brand to new levels.

Student

From the metrics I look at regarding 17-18 year-old students, it seemed like Vine has dropped off considerably in popularity once Instagram added the ability for video. I think SnapChat could also be considered a video platform since it compiles photos and video into stories that are easy for users to digest and engage with.

Student

After looking into Meerkat and Vine, I am impressed with both platforms. Meerkat is a very interesting app where you can stream live video on your phone using the app, the 2 video streams that I watched were people talking about news and someone talking about random stuff using a webcam. Meerkat uses a system where users can post comments when watching peoples live Meerkat streams this way there can be communication back and forth between the viewer and person streaming content. Vine is more of a social media application similar to twitter or instagram. On vine you create an account and post short video clips that can be liked and revined. You follow people on vine similar to twitter and can revine videos which is exactly like retweeting tweets on twitter. Although vine is not live vines can still be posted to twitter and facebook pages making it very easy for videos to go viral. With the rise of online video content that is currently happening Vine and Meerkat are great video sharing platforms that have potential to grow even bigger then they already are.

Student

Online video is understandably growing in popularity because it is much more engaging and the audience does not have to sit there and read an article. The audience is able to pay attention as they like and still get the information.

How To videos are on the rise because gaining new information and being able to actually see what to do instead of just reading about it is great. I find myself quite frequently watching How To videos to learn how to do new hairstyles and craft ideas. I am a visual learner so I love the ability to be able to learn in this fashion.

I have no personal experience with Meerkat, but it seems like a good idea in theory. Except, I do not see myself downloading the app when I can already upload videos directly onto Twitter.

However, I love the looping effect that Vine has. I think it is a great social networking site and it allows for so many different types of videos and the time limit makes them very user friendly. The viewer does not have to sit there and watch a minute long video, the six second videos work well with most people's attention span but it also is enough time to have content within the video.

Student

I think you hit the nail on the head in regards to why online video is growing in popularity: engagement. No other medium offers the same level of engagement or overall effect that it has on the person consuming it. I think that a lot of people, like yourself, would classify themselves as visual learners, so the How To videos gaining popularity makes a lot of sense as well. I also think that in our world of instant gratification, videos are easier for people to consume than, as you said, an article or some other medium.

Student

I was always interested in the video advertisement because in my opinion, video is more attractive than readings and pictures. To me, I am too lazy to read an advertisement, and picture is not more eye-catching than video. The post mentioned about two platforms that I have heard about. However, I have never really tried them. They are both famous based on Twitter. The most distinct characteristic between them is that Vine is the platform to upload video and Meerkat is online live streaming.

Student

I think the advetising on videos has played a crucial role on promoting products. In the blog post, Vine is the one that I am familiar with. The most decisive reason Vine is so successful is the limited length of video. To upload the video in Vine, it must shorter than 6 seconds. When people watch the vadvetisment, they do not have patient on the long video. Therfore, shorten the time will attract more people to watch the whole advertisement. Moreover, YouTube also uses this method that the advertisements do not pop up "Skip" if it is not longer than 30 seconds.

Student
I'm very familiar with vine, however this was the first one heard of meerkat. I love short entertaining videos on vine, Instagram and snapchat. So the idea behind the meerkat app is kind of the same as snapchat, only your videos post directly to your Twitter account. I'm surprised that I haven't heard of it yet, but I can see it becoming more and more popular over the next year. People love videos. We watch for entertainment, to learn things, to stay connected to the rest of the world. I'm not a huge fan of reading. So I will watch a video to avoid reading almost anything.i love to watch hair and makeup tutorials (and their are millions!) I've watched how to videos and cooked an entire meal. Short vine clips, and videos on social media entertain me daily. So, I'm wondering if in the next few years are all the social media networks going to be just everyone posting short clips of their everyday lives. Instead of posting a status, you will post a short clip.....I actually hope not, because I can see that becoming super annoying!
Student

These video sharing platforms are great for where we are going in terms of how we relate to media and content, but I think it poses a huge challenge for marketing. If a business wants to be successful on these platforms and connect with their customers (or would-be customers), they'll have to find ways to not be overly gimmicky or contrived while still producing something that is worth watching. I have always loved vine because of the users who just goof around and produce hilarious (and extremely shareable) content. To be honest, I haven't really watched (or wanted to find) anything else. I've never had many experiences with Meerkat, but it seems like it could be super useful for events or promotions... but I can't imagine many businesses pulling it off very well. What I can imagine is a lot of boring streams that I would pass over almost immediately or something that would be hard to understand out of context. Again, it may just be my lack of experience. Either way, I think the companies that find the ways to harness apps like these will be forces to be reckoned with. Companies that cannot harness them but still try will probably fall pretty short and have to come up with any number of strategies to reconnect or save face.

Student

I think the popularity in Instagram videos, YouTube, and other video sources is that you can preview the product without acctually leaving your house. A very popular video that I have seen lately is makeup tutorials. They are great because you can see the colors of the makeup and also how they blend and look on real skin before your purchase, which is great especially for online shoppers. Videos really help the online market because it makes product samples available to you at your home without you actually having to test the product. Many bloggers actually get paid to review products so that their followers will see these products in action, which makes them want to make a purchase for a product that they weren't origninally interested in.

Student

Meerkat became a marketing sensation right after its launch because of its ability to connect brands and consumers in real-time without delay. For example, if a customer asks to take a closer look at something in the video, the streamer can satisfy their request immediately. This is more for companies I beleive.

Student

I am a big fan in Vine! I love checking out the funny vine videos that get shared around the world and even the singing vines because it shows all the talent out in the world. Its the perfect creation where it can capture peoples attention because it is only 7 seconds long. In the world we live in today, anything longer than 7 seconds tends to lose peoples attention.
