YouTube is An Advertising Magnet

YouTube claims to now have more than 20,000 advertisers. These advertisers run the gamut from the large Super Bowl advertisers to the small firms. This growth is partly because YouTube is trying to reach out to digital agencies to attract the smaller firms. One example of this outreach is TrueView, where the advertiser only pays if a viewer chooses to watch a video. The digital agency can expect other outreaches as well.
Another reason why advertisers need to consider YouTube is because it is so effective. People want to watch videos, and on YouTube they are willing to forgo studio level production values as well as big names involved, which all contribute significantly to production costs. In short, viewers are willing to give cheaply made video ads a chance. Even if they do not like the ad, then they have still viewed it. YouTube also offers a recommendation system based on friends and previous affections, which also helps drive traffic to the video ads.
What are your thoughts on advertising on YouTube? Would you watch ads there? What is the future of online video advertising on YouTube?

YouTube can be a great advertising avenue. If done right, you can actually make people want to view your ads. Disguising your ad as a viral video seems to be a popular concept these days. Sometimes you may not even realize you are watching an ad until the very end of the video. The production costs can be very cheap as well. If your company were to make a simple viral video showing behind the scenes footage at your company for example, that would almost be free. I also like where ads are going today with cusotmizable content. We are now seeing ads that fit each consumers individual taste. Rather than see ads I have no interest in, I am seeing ads for prodcuts I have some actual interest in.
I think Youtube is a great medium for advertising for companies of all sizes. For one thing, like most forms of internet advertising, engaging with your target market is unprecedentedly easy and accurate. Along with this accuracy and ease of target marketing, comes cheaper and cheaper rates for ad space. The fewer people that you advertise to, and the more interested they are in the content you provide and the products you're selling, the more money you will save by avoiding frivolous advertising. Your click through rates will also be higher, as well as the number of people who actually buy products using your ad as a portal. Youtube's featured video option also capitalizes on the effective ad targeting the same way that preroll ads do, and takes advantage of the fact that after watching a video, most people look to the related videos on the right of the screen for what to watch next. The featured video option also lets the advertiser display ads that are as long as they want them to be, the challenge being to keep the viewer engaged for the full length of the video. There are also banner ads on Youtube which are much larger and statistically more professionaly done than banner ads are on other sites. Although those ads are reserved for the bigger brands with bigger budgets, a smaller company can still make a push if they feel the time is right, and spend a lot of their advertising budget on a front page banner ad. Interactivity in Youtube ads also provides an outlet for brands to be creative and draw in the user by making them interact with your ad.
I agree that YouTube has truly become somewhat of an indispensable part of any online and/or digital marketing strategy. Low costs and sharing functionality give any ad or branding message the potential to really expand beyond its regular reach had it been placed in a more traditional medium. That said however, it is important that advertisers and marketers understand the style and format that are conducive to such a platform as YouTube. The key ingredient in any YouTube campaign: consumers must want to watch it. Unlike TV, Radio, or even print to some extent, boring or non-entertaining YouTube branding messages will sit in Internet oblivion to rot as they don't have to be endured, rather they have to be sought after. This can be seen in on the oft-used examples from The New Rules of Marketing and PR about the Blender Company BlendTec, where the owner has a series of videos demonstrating himself blending a number of things, most notably a new iPhone (a video watched by over 10 Million people!). By creating a unique video of demonstration (and an entertaining/fascinating/horrifying one at that), Blendtec was able to engage with consumers in a genuine way.
Something
else that BlendTec mastered with these videos was their capability to
be overtly promotional without seeming calculated. In this day and age,
people want to know why and where they’re receiving their brand
messages; they don’t like feeling taken advantage of, and BlendTec is
very open about itself, allowing the consumer to feel like a part of the campaign and not a target of the campaign.
Considering Youtube as a channel to get advertisement out to the public should be on all company's mind regardless of the company size. Youtube proves to be effective to drive a large amount of traffic since it's initiation. Even if the video production values are considerably lower than studio quality, but the absolute volume can help the firm generate a larger return than other formats of advertisement.
Advertising on YouTube is definitely a market that businesses need to consider. As an avid YouTube user, I can tell you that I am consistantly seeing the advertisements and although the conversion of me actually clicking on the advertisement is low, I do read them and can recall what the messages were for a short time. This makes me feel that it would be best for the pop up advertisement or simple word advertisements on YouTube should be only for brand recognition. However, when a video that I want to watch won't load until the advertisment plays, sometimes I watch it, but because I know that it will play for about 30 seconds (a very long time in the online world) I will tab open an new screen while it plays, unless it immediatley grabs my attention. So the video advertisments can be affective if they are creative and entertaining, because ultimately that is what YouTubers are there to see.
I think YouTube is a great way for any business -- small or large -- to advertise. The "TrueView" is a great way to get smaller business to want to advertise, it allows you to know that you are only paying when people actually view your ad and gives them a piece of mind. YouTube can be a great place for advertising or broadcasting yourself and business due to the endless possibilities it offers. Posting videos -- and mixing it with some creative new ideas -- can create a viral buzz and before you know it your video, and business/idea/product can be famous. As a college student you see funny videos, or online video blogs by word of mouth, and word of mouse alike.
YouTube should be seriously considered for companies of any size because it is a quick way to make a little creativity go a long way. YouTube can become addicting and as a college student it is a huge source of entertainment as well as information. Its key for a video to have entertainment value in any case but if a company can work entertainment value into informational value it could be a gold mine. The trick would be making sure the video is in the path of enough people and linked to other commonly viewed videos to give it a start. The best publicity in my opinion, is that given by actual users or in this case viewers. If a company can draw in enough base viewers and those viewers find the material useful or entertaining they will share it with their friends. Now that sharing immediately is even easier than ever, a smart, clever, witty, creative video can be covering the web at warp speed and making a lasting impression on the advertising industry and more importantly consumers. Plus on top of simply getting views you could tally up the amount of blogs that cover viral videos, people who remix or spoof your video and even some negative comments can all drive more people to see what you have to offer. Since the value of seeing is believing it would be worth the risk!
It's pretty apparent that users of the web really hate pop-ups, flashy distracting banner ads and worst of all forced video advertisements. Its become pretty second nature to be able to ignore these ads or find ways to keep ourselves busy while they air before your suggested video come up. Although it's bothersome and annoying to consumers, advertisers are getting good reach into otherwise untapped niches in the marketplace. Even when I go to YouTube to check out a video or to just browse, I'm usually not that connected to the unwanted ad, but in most cases I'll remember the brand or product type that was being advertised. So as bad as the clutter may seem in the world of video advertising online and especially on YouTube, I believe it is very promising to advertisers and marketers alike to expand their presence on the web. In the future I believe that most videos will reflect relevancy on what users are searching for rather than just throwing on a random unrelated ad that users can care less to see. So yes, I think YouTube is a good channel for advertisers to use, not only because it is one of the largest used websites for information and video but also because it has incredible potential to expand and optimize its use on this channel.
I had a gut feeling that YouTube was going to generate a large amount of advertisers and advertising revenue. This is obvious because people are prone to watch advertising. Television ads are the best recall ads and YouTube's niche of being able to present the people with visual ads is very attractive to advertising firms. Youtube is also available on mobile phones so this is a no brainer for those firms who can afford the expense to advertise on YouTube. Visually impacting ads are where the money is and this is present with YouTube. 20,000 advertisers is a large number, but look for that number to climb and expand exponentially in the future.
Even though I'm an advertising major, I'll admit, advertisements that play before I try to watch a music video are very annoying. However, I understand why they are necessary and I am fine with watching a :30 second ad if I am able to view and listen to a 2:30 music video for free. Although when I say I am fine with "viewing" an ad, I really don't ever actually watch the ad... or pay attention to it. I can mute it, I can change to another website tab... so I don't believe they're that effective. A lot of other people I know have similar habits when ads begin to play... they tune out. The future of online video advertising on YouTube will probably be very similar to Hulu's advertising strategy where they allow the consumer to choose how and which advertisings they watch... but again... how much people are actually watching and paying attention and being influenced by the advertising... is anyone's guess.
Advertising on YouTube is a trend that is not going to end any time soon. Within the near future YouTube may be considered a modern traditional advertising vehicle. I feel that it is a very innovative and pioneering advertising strategy. Personally, I would and I do watch ads on YouTube. It allows viewers to control their advertisements and commercials. For example, when I’m watching a movie or a sitcom on television I usually always record it on my DVR so that I can fast forward through the commercials, but when I hear or read about a popular advertisement or commercial I hop on my MacBook and head straight to YouTube to check it out; such as the Toyota’s Swagger Wagon viral ad. Toyota created an ad for their Sienna family minivan but they did not air it on television it was solely an online viral ad that viewers absolutely loved! As far as the future of online video advertising on YouTube a lot more companies even smaller ones are going to jump on the bandwagon eventually if not sooner. Studies even show that the numbers of individuals watching television online are increasing. Overall, advertising on YouTube has a very bright future. It gives individuals as well as companies an outlet of endless creativity. With an advertisement on YouTube you don’t have dish out $2 million for a: 30 spot, it’s very cost efficient and you can max out your time to five minutes if you want to. You can also take advantage of keyword optimization to make sure that your advertisement is targeting your specific audience, which is even better!
I personally do not go to Youtube for advertisements. Although, sometimes I do find a television advertisment entertaining or humorous and look to Youtube to watch it again. The Super Bowl is the most popular place for this as this event is known for its commercials. People rave about this commercials for sometime and turn to Youtube to view them over and over again and for sharing. I cannot see the future of people just going to Youtube to watch advertisements. This will only be the case when someone wants to watchin an ad over again and not to see an ad for the first time. Video advertising on Youtube will be stuck with their ads before videos for the 15 seconds they purchased or the click advertising on the sides of the webpage. Youtube is primarily for sharing for the masses and will stay that way.
i treat myself as a customer who are looking at the youtube just for fun or whatever. I would not particularly look at the advertisement if i know it is advertisement in there. but if i want to look at something interest me i feel not comfortable to look at the advertisement before the video start but i have to look at them. I think in the future, the ads for the Youtube could be the one before the video start or the pop-up ads. this also can be the email send to the user's account, which may bother less.
I think that Youtube can be a great spot to advertise. As a customer I find it annoying when I have to wait an entire minute before I can watch the first video I clicked. I think that they should decrease the time of the advertisements and place them after a certain amount of videos have been viewed. I wouldn't mind after 3 or 4 videos to see and advertisement, or a shorter ad while the video is loading.
i agree with you!! i would transfer to another website if the advs happened many times. if the advs becomes annoying, this may have negative effect for the customers. Or produce something really fun in the beginning may help a little bit.
I feel like I'm in the same boat as many of the other people who have commented thus far in the sense that, yes, it's a great way to advertise your business when you're looking at it from that perspective. However, from the consumer's point of view, the short advertisements that pop up before you watch every video can get quite annoying and I tend to tune them out as well.
So, although I do think advertising on Youtube is a great way to get your message out to a large number of people for a fraction of the cost as normal commercial advertising, it does have its flaws.
I think Advertising on Youtube is a great idea. Almost any commercial you see on TV will also be on Youtube. Take for example the Old Spice commercials where "Your man can smell like my man." Sure, it was aired on TV and we all know it for its uniqueness of getting everything in one shot, but for people to go out of there way and watch it on Youtube is just genius. We are taking time out of our day to watch an ad, what else can a company ask for? However, when it comes to those 15 second advertisements that pop up before your video starts and you're forced to watch them tend to get a little annoying. Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's a great idea since it forces the consumer to watch the ad, however I feel like the consumer will just tune the ad out and just count down the seconds till it's over. At least, that's what I tend to do. But it is still a great way to advertise a product. Advertising on Youtube is possibly one of the best ways to get your name out in the digital media world since so many people use Youtube multiple times a day.
I really think that the world of advertising definitely recognizes the added benefits/negatives that Youtube can bring to the world of advertising. I am really surprised by the amount of advertising on Youtube. I go to Youtube to listen to music videos and various other videos and I find it quite annoying when the advertisements come up that you have to watch in order to get to the video that you want to watch. I think that a lot of people try to avoid the advertisements and get right to the video and that is why on some videos you are allowed to skip right to the video and can avoid the ads. I do not really watch ads on Youtube but, if I am going to watch them it definitely would have to be the popular, funny ads from the SuperBowl. I think that in the near future I can only see online advertising expanding to other avenues. I think maybe Facebook might force people to watch ads to use Facebook. I also believe that the overall revenue made by online sites and advertisers will continue to grow and become a major avenue for advertisers to use to get out new and innovative messages.
Advertising on Youtube is a great thing for businesses, but I think it is easily overlooked, just like TV ads on Tivo. They have the opportunity of reaching a large market, but usually will fail because most people would rather not have any commercials. I am the same way. I will mute advertisements on youtube, wait for my video to start, and then turn on the volume when my video starts. They need to find a way for ads to be more apparent for it to work.
From a company standpoint, I believe advertising on YouTube can be a great way to build brand identity and increase revenue. Solely considering the massive number of YouTube viewers and the fairly low cost that is necessary to create a successful, or "viral" advertisement, are enough to convince me that YouTube is an efficient medium. When I am on YouTube for the most part I try to avoid watching ads if possible. However, we now exist in a world where consumers seek out entertaining and unique advertisments. This is an almost evolutionary change because if an advertiser can create a viral ad and posts it on YouTube millions of people will view it. It goes without saying that viral advertisments are invaluable to increasing brand identity. Therefore, I view YouTube as an excellent place to advertise.
I think there is a huge future in advertsing on YouTube. Its effective and even if your not interested in the product you are still exposed to the ad. I have watched many youtube videos and have seen ads, some that I was really interested in and others no so much. Alot of ads I can honestly say I never pay attention to but I have recollection of seeing them before. As for the future of online video advertising on YouTube, I think it is going to sky rocket and transform into something completely new and unpredictable. I chose to study advertising because it is constantly changing and I think YouTube is just the start of the next best way to advertise.
Honestly, the only ads i am interested in viewing are the ones that will make me laugh. Whether its from another country or from the superbowl, if i hear about it i might go out of my way to search for it. Other than that, the ads that appear before watching normal videos i strongly disgree with. I already have an ad blocker on Mozilla to block out these ads from other websites, i find them annoying and cluttered. The internet needs advertising, we all know this. But we must find a way to engage the customer without testing their patience levels. If we can do this, its a win win for everyone.
As far as me watching advertisements on Youtube, I have and will continue to only watch the ads that I am interested in. Sometimes before a popular video the viewer has no choice to skip the ad, I usually just ignore this. My thoughts on the matter differ from my actions. I think advertising on youtube is great and essencial if it is done correctly by the right company. Know your product and if it has a place on this large scale advertising vehicle. The future of Youtube is somewhere in the clouds, meaning there is no ceiling to its possibilities so online video ads may be pivotal or obsolete. One thing is for certain though, everyone in the business should be monitoring its activities for years to come. Do it live.
YouTube is certainly a key media outlet, but I wonder why other video sites (like vimeo) don't draw the attention YouTube does. They seem just as effective (aside from having fewer members). It seems as though a bottleneck-type effect is being established - people only using sites with high membership only makes those sites more powerful and significant and lessens the ability of other, otherwise equal, sites. If membership is the only factor, we're setting ourselves up for a monopoly.
As far as watching ads on YouTube, I have and would again. BUT. They must compell me. They have to make me want to see them. Weiden+Kennedy's campaign for Chrysler, Imported from Detroit, (Good Things) is a good example. I'm also always interested in the work they do for Nike. I must have watched their Throwdown ad, 5o times.
Online video advertising on YouTube is definitely only getting bigger. Hopefully the ads' integration relative to searched content will become more and more seamless.
I definitely think that Youtube is a wonderful way to advertise. People of all ages are constantly on Youtube and if an ad is hooked on to a particular video then they are actually forced to watch it and usually can't click through. Even if you are being forced, it is still being viewed and therefore would contribute to a higher ad frequency. Many individuals like myself go on there to view funny or interesting ads they have seen on TV- so they are exposing themselves to the advertisement. Overall, I don't think there would be any negative affects of putting ads on Youtube- only positive.
Well to start, the ads on youtube almost seem second nature to me now only because it seems so fitting to have advertising on a website such as youtube. Also, facebook now a days and every other social media website seem as though advertising is a standard. As far as if I would watch the ads, I mean I kinda sort have to right? If I want to watch a video on youtube, alot of the time I also have to watch an ad before it. I will be honest, I did like watching youtube videos and not having to wait for advertisements; however, now having advertisments on youtube, it will not deter me from watching more youtube videos. Is it inconvenient watching advertisement videos before the videos I actually want to watch on youtube? YES! However, this will not stop me from watching Numa Numa, or I'm A Snake.! The future looks bright for online video advertising.
I think that the push Youtube has made to gain more advertisers and implement more ads in their videos is not what I envisioned Youtube to be. Sure there's a lot of money to be made in advertising on Youtube, and it may be effective, but when I think of Youtube, I remembber when it was famous for being the website that videos were posted, not for the monetary gain, but because someone found it entertaining and wanted to share it with the world. I wish that Youtube stayed the way it was, with few ads and more personal, authentic content.
I'm sure that I am in the minority on this argument as far as advertisers go, because I too do the money that can be made with advertising on popular websites like Facebook, Twitter, Google and Youtube. I'm also a huge fan of Youtube marketing campaigns, such as Old Spice's campaign to post videos on Youtube that people WANT to see. But as far as 15 or 30 second forced commercials that viewers are forced to view before they can watch the video they actually want to see, I think they are annoying to the viewer and doubt the actual effectiveness of the advertising.
Since I am constantly on YouTube, I do notice most all of the ads from big name brands all the way down to small name local guys. I do not watch all of the ads, but the ones that I do watch (or take time to look at) are either local ones or the 15 second ones that I am forced to watch (not that I'm complaining) before the music video I searched for. I think that the video advertising future is only getting brighter. Marketers and advertisers will keep coming up with creative and innovative ways to get the message out to consumers that coincide with the new technology that is constantly being discovered or released. As for the near future, I believe that YouTube will take the video ad cake, and as for the long run, I have no comment. I have no clue what the internet will look like in 10 years from now. However, I do remember a time when people thought MySpace would last and Google wouldn't. Who's to say who will be where in a few years from now.
I think using YouTube to advertise is a wonderful way to get your brand name out there and recognized. When I go to YouTube, it is often times to watch funny videos or clips from shows. There is usually an advertisement shown before the clip I searched for, but I think that the ads shown then are effective because I force myself to sit through the 30 seconds they are in order to see the video following it. There are also plenty of people who go to YouTube in order to search for advertisements and commercials they have seen. Sure, there is an overwhelming amount of commercials I don't want to see, but some of them are hilarious or clever and I will go to YouTube to watch them again. The future looks bright for online video adverising on YouTube. As technology continues to expand, so does the opportunities to use the Internet to promote a brand.
Since I've been involved in the creation of a few YouTube videos (more promotional/non-profit based than what I'd call advertising, but still...), I may be a little bias. However, I think preferences have been trending more toward things that feel authentic rather than polished. I definitely agree that advertisers should consider YouTube and the possibilities of leveraging content created by their brand base. Any time you can get your fans involved with your brand, you've got a winner. There still is a place for high production ads on YouTube as well - case in point: VW. The Darth Vader commercial got millions of hits because people wanted to share it and watch it over and over. So, basically, short videos/commercials have a place on YouTube because people can share them via social media in real time when they want it.
Most of the time when I use youtube, it's to watch ads. Yes, there are some crappy ones but I found some real gems to. And sometimes the crappy ones really take off through youtube whereas on tv they never would have even had a chance to get air time. Plus it allows you to search for a specific type of commercial. For example if you really want shoe commercials you type that in to your tool bar and bam! There they are. This allows brands to better reach their target audience. I feel online video advertising will become the future of online video advertising as tv ads are quickly becoming obsolete with the option to fast forward through tv commercials.
YouTube advertising is a very effective way to integrate advertising into a medium in which many people who will view and see the ads will not see them as annoying or intrusive. People visit YouTube's site to see viral videos and to listen to music. Advertisements which pop up during the videos or are required to be viewed before certain popular videos are watched because people highly anticipate the video and will wait. I think this is YouTube's strength. People make the choice to watch the video, therefore they know they will be faced with advertisements and are less bothered and more receptive to their messages. I think the future of online video advertising on YouTube will only increase. Only in recent years has the requirement of viewing ads before videos taken place and it is a possibility it may become a requirement for all videos. This could upset viewers and cause them to no longer use YouTube as their stop for viewing videos online.
In terms of brand exposure, advertising via youtube can be incredibly effective. However, most Youtube users will be put off by having to sit through an ad clip, especially if it's longer than whatever it is they really want to watch. I've seen people complain about this both online and in person. So from that standpoint, it could work against a brand's image if not done carefully. I think banners are a better route because they get the point across without disturbing users and also allow them the chance to pursue a product or service if they so choose. If video advertisements are utilized, I think it's important for them to be extremely concise. If so, they could be much more effective, especially if they are funny or thought-provoking. When it comes to the internet, a 10-15 second ad is much more effective than a 30-60 second one.
As an advertising major, I think Youtube implementing video ad's was a great idea for a couple of key reasons. First of all, Youtube already has a system of suggesting similiar videos after viewing the video of your choice. This allows for better target marketing by Youtube, because they can play specific ads depending on the search someone has made, which leads towards better target marketing. Secondly, Youtube offers viewers to choose which commercial they would rather watch, which allows for feedback on what commercials consumers prefer. These benefits are an excellent way to get advertising and marketing feedback from their viewers instantly, whereas advertising on other forms of media cannot.
But on the other side of everything (the consumer aspect), these advertisements can be quiet an annoyance, due to the fact that some people may feel cheated having to watch commercial(s) for a short internet video instead of a full feature length show or movie. Secondly, Youtube advertisements can cause the originally intended searched video to stream slowly or not at all, which in result gives the consumers a negative feeling towards the advertisement placed before hand. Once Youtube can control all the bugs that come along with placing advertisments before videos, then it will be one of the most successful leaders in online video advertising of the World Wide Web (if it is not already).
YouTube is one of the most effective media nowadays; therefore it is called advertising magnet. In a day, there are billions people go to YouTube to watch videos that people have shared online. However, there are different ways of distributing ads, which people have different aspects toward them. For the ads that are popped up during other videos and the ads that run before the videos are seen as annoying and disturbing things. In contrast, for some advertising that are so interesting, people would watch it and recommend to their friends, leading to more traffic to those video ads. Personally, as an advertising major student, I like to search for interesting ads on YouTube. I often find some ads, which are funny or creative. For me, advertising in YouTube is for entertainment; I do not look at it as a tool for commercial purpose. For most people, I think they go to YouTube to look for something they interested in, and sometimes they are annoyed by ads. Nevertheless, if the advertisers put the right ads before the particular videos, it may be the perfect channel for targeted audiences. In addition, for the video ads themselves, they definitely reach their potential customers.
I believe that you tube is a great place for advertising, but I think it works best in conjunction with other media vehicles. I realize that there are many many people who enjoy YouTube and spend a lot of time there, therefore, exposing them to many different advertisements but what about those who don't frequently visit the tube? I would definitely watch an ad on YouTube if I was already there but for the most part I'm not. I think advertisers need to think of ways to get consumers to YouTube in order to watch their ads. QR codes would be on good example since they can send the consumer directly to the YouTube ad. All in all online video advertising will be a big part of the future but I think that mixing online with offline media will be the most effective.
I think advertising on YouTube is an amazing way to get out to viewers who are interested. I do sometimes go on YouTube and search for commercials because I enjoy it. Another thing is that I know advertisers would pay a certain channel that has thousands or millions of subscribers to advertise their product or allow them to have their ads in their videos. So I think it's a wonderful way of getting their products or service out there, not just to the United States but worldwide.
Youtube is clearly the most ideal destination for online advertisers for a few reasons. One is it's obvious one of the most popular mainstream websites. I would guess that along with Google, Facebook, and Twitter, Youtube is definitely one of the leaders in 'hits' or website visitors per day. Also the fact that youtube is exclusively video content is also very advantageous for advertisers. Since almost all visitors to the website are there to watch video, it means that they will be staring at the youtube site for however long the video lasts for. Meaning that there is ample time and opportunity for their eyes to wander to your ad if it's placed on the page.
In my opinion advertising on Youtube is a very lucrative marketing strategy. Youtube is already a free service so the customers are really getting a service for free so the advertisements are just one aspect of watching the videos that they will have to deal with. This is also a great marketing strategy because millions of people all over the world use Youtube, not just a certain region.
I believe that YouTube is great for companies. More and More people view videos on YouTube every day, many people sending hours and hours on it daily. It is a cheap and effective way for companies to get their brand out there to consumers. I use YouTube on a daily basis for my internship. We are always posting new educational videos and commercials. It's a good way to see what the consumers like and get their feedback in a timely and cheap way. The future for online advertising on YouTube is HUGE; anyone with internet access is able to watch videos on YouTube or post videos on YouTube, which means that there are a wide variety of consumers, businesses and etc that your business can be exposed to.
The number speaks for itself -- 20,000 advertisers. If YouTube has been able to attain 20,000 accounts, they must be doing something right. With over 120 million U.S. viewers, this is place to advertise and drive traffic to your product. I currently work in an office with over 150 people and every single one of us goes on YouTube at least once per day. There is a guarantee that your ads will scale to reach the exact audience that needs to be targeted.
Next is the low production costs--just because you are not paying a fortune to have your ad produced, does not mean that it will be a disaster. Low-production costs are a huge benefit, especially when your ads are effective. Typically, I pay attention to the ad that must play before my video since my eyes are already directed to what I want to be watching, and some of those ads are retained. Also, I would think that viewers on YouTube have a higher engagement rate with advertisements because the site is so engaging itself--posting comments, videos, ratings, etc. This engagement rate should affect the engagement that the viewers have with the ads to--hopefully engaging with the product of the advertiser.
The future of online video advertising is booming with digital media being the main medium in the world today. I expect the growth from YouTube as they are giving advertisers such a great opportunity.
I think that advertising on YouTube is a smart move for companies. I personally visit YouTube on a daily basis and view multiple advertisments everytime that I log on. Even thought I am not really thinking about the advertisements being shown, I am still viewing the ad and absorbing information about the product. It is smart for advertisers to take advantage of online video ads via YouTube because of the extremely low production costs and the large audience that they have the potential to reach. YouTube viewers range from all ages, ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds which makes for a good opportunity for advertisers to reach someone in their target market.

YouTube as an online video-sharing community has a way of getting viewers somewhat addicted to watching the site's videos. Once Rebecca Black's music video "Friday" when viral, people began watching it over and over again. After watching the music video, viewers would then watch Rebecca Black mock videos, in which the idea of mocking the singer went viral. I found myself spending an hour at a time bouncing from video to video that dealt with Rebecca Black (hence I was not a fan of her music video). The way that videos do end up going viral like this example is amazing for advertisers, because people will tend to become familiar with an ad depending on how many times they watch videos with the same content. The only downside of this though is that advertisements on videos by most viewers are considered as annoying, unwanted clutter. The ad could become too familiar, beyond the point of being obnoxious.
I on the other hand like to see what type of ads are displayed on what videos, because I am an advertising student. But in all honesty if I was just the average YouTube viewer, I would most likely be annoyed with most of the ads and enjoy the fact that some have an exit button, where some of the video ads have a button that you can hit if you want to skip the ad. Although I believe this is probably true of most people, I think the future of video advertising on YouTube will continue to grow at a rapid rate because of how many people are involved with video sharing and watching on the site.
As a Youtube user I honestly hate being forced to view an ad before I can see the video that I am trying to watch. It's annoying to me. If I wanted to have an advertisement forced upon me, I would just turn on the TV. Though, knowing that everyone has to make money I can see why companies have chose to go this route. If they gave you the option to view the ad at the end of a video, as a user, that would be a better way to go. Though it would also give the viewer the chance to skip the ad completely.
It's also a little annoying to me to have the text ads pop up on the bottom of a video. They're pretty intrusive, and annoying that they change throughout the video.
With Youtube being a free site to post videos on it seems pretty unnecessary to add advertisements to most videos. I am completely speaking as a user on this subject. As an advertiser, I understand why its done, completely. It's just annoying, and I think that at some point it will turn a lot of people off and steer someone to creating a new website or other means of sharing.
I think that people often confused good ads with expensive ads. If you have ever seen the Will it Blend commercials, you know that this is not true. It does not take a lot of money to entertain someone, and at the end of the day I, as well as the rest of the population, will watch any advertisement on Youtube that is really entertaining. Youtube is great for inexpensive and effective ads!
I hate when I pull up a video and am forced to sit through a commercial before it will play. Usually, I'll either mute it and/or do something else for 30 seconds and not even listen. I feel like that has to be a pretty typical respone, so it seems like a waste of money for advertisers to do this. I guess on some level the message reaches me so I could recall the brand or particular product, but it doesn't make me any more likely to become a customer. Like we've been reading almost every week, consumers are not as receptive to "interruption advertising". It might even make them feel negatively towards a company!
On the other hand, YouTube is a great platform for viral campaigns. If a company creates a memorable ad and it gets posted (i.e. the Chrysler 200 Superbowl ad), people seek it out and share the link with others. Advertising is always more effective when the consumer comes across it because they WANT TO - not when they're forced to listen to an unrelated 30 second ad in order to get to what they're actually looking for.
As a pretty frequent youtube user, I dont like to watch the advertising before the videos. But as a person who understands advertising, I watch the commercials because I know that this is a way for a company like google, who owns youtube, to make money. Online advertising is on the come up. It is the wave of the future. Todays youth would much rather use the computer than watch tv and things of that nature. So to incorporate ads within the interface of these sites is genius. Now the statement about low budget ads getting better viewer turnout is sommething i can relate to. This is because the youth of today like a good comedy and most of the time we can find something funny in a cheaply made commercial. So whats my views on advertising on youtube, its ok as long as it is kept at a minimal.
I thinkg that advertising on Youtube is a great way to advertise as well as make some money. I read an article about people who start their own Youtube channels. If they become popular enough, then Youtube will offer them the opportunity to advertise on their channels. Ad's range from all different things but it is actually a great way for these people to make money. A Youtube beauty guru I subscribe to on Youtube actually makes a good amount of money from her channel so that she can go out and buy things to keep making videos with. I don't mind the ads as long as they are interesting however some are extremely annoying especially when you cannot skip them. I think that this phenomenom will definitely continue and even start making it into social media websites- which some of it already has.
