I've noticed name brand products more in movies and TV shows. Do these large companies (Ex: Jeep) pay high dollar to have their products used in film? Are commericials less effective because of applications that don't require them like Netflix and TV show recording?

Yes, the traditional thrity second commercial is becoming less and less relevant. Consumer behavior switching to an on-demand model where it's easy to skip or eliminate advertisements. Further, most consumers are growing less tolerant of any push form of advertising.

Large companies are looking for alternative ways to reach consumers, one of them being product placement. It most cases it's not very effective however. They should consider finding new ways to engage and interact with their audience rather than try and sneak products into other media.

How often do you think brands should reach out to celebrities or individuals that are popular on social media, such as Instagram or YouTube to promote their products? Sometimes when I see a celebrity promote a product I am skeptical that it is not geniune and that they are just being paid to promote the product.

This is more of a question for individuals and celebrities than the brands themselves. It's in the brands best interest to get as many large audience embassadors as possible. The celebrities (or micro-celebrities) need to balance their promotion of brands with their own authenticity. If they start promoting any product or over-promote they could lose their audience all together.

The other day, I had to put my personal Twitter account on an application of some sort. I don't believe that I have tweeted anything bad but how often to jobs actually look at your Twitter, Instagram and Facebook?

Most employeers will Google your name sometime during the hiring process. Technically it's illegal to make hiring decissions based on social media, that said it's almost completely unenforcable. When you're looking for a job, expect that anything you published online will be seen and reviewed by your prospective employeer.

I see what you mean about larger companies not needing to follow back every customer that follows them. That does seem like a waste of time an resources. But what about a brand or company that's a lot smaller or just starting off? Could this help make the company-customer connection more personal and in turn grow their business?

The actual act of following users back isn't as important as engagingwith them. It's easy to follow back every customer, there are programs that will do so automatically. Engaging and responding to their messages, tweets and comments is significantly more important even when you have a large brand. Cut back on the product placement and invest more in a social media team, their will be much higher long term returns.

From an employer's perspective, what do you see more value in: academic degree and class accomplishments or internship experience? I'm graduating in May with a degree in advertising and minor in public relations, yet have no formal advertising internship experience. I've had internships in communications and PR but am hesistant to apply to advertising-focused jobs because I don't have much professional experience outside of classwork. Do you think this is something that an employer could see as an issue?

Student

Since the traditional thirty-second commercial is becoming less and less relevant, why are companies still spending large numbers in creating these commericals? Do you think there is going to be a point where companies will abandon traditional commercials all together and deicide to advertise their brand name in other ways?

Student

In regards to what kind of experience we should have on our profiles, should it be more focused or more varied? I am a Communications major and some of my work experience supports that, and some does not. Should I be including that extra experience to appear more versatile? Or is it better to appear more streamlined?

I've had a lot of miscellaneous jobs since I was 16.  How important is it to have those jobs like working at Babies R Us or the four different restaurants I've worked at in the past two years?  Is it more important to be as thorough as possible or to have the major highlights with (seemingly) large gaps of unemployment?

Student

My company this semester is O2. O2's Twitter account mainly deals with customer complaints and they hardly ever post original content. Does it make sense for large companies to just dedicate their social media accounts to customer complaints and questions or should they just make a sepatate account?

I am new to the LinkedIn world, with a resume you want to be consice and add relevent material. Since a LinkedIn is basically and online resume that can be easily viewed by anyon, do the same rules apply? How much information is too much? LinkedIn seems to be a little more personal, afterall i dont typically share links to my social medias on my paper resume.

Do you think it's a good thing or bad thing for a luxury brand to respond directly back to their customers? I find that they respond less often to customers making them less personable, but consumers still purchase their product even if they don't have a strong social media presence. What is the reasoning behind that?

Student

When building your LinkedIn profile how far back should you go in terms of things that you have done? At this point, I am assuming that Highschool activites are not really relevant but should you put down which Highschool you attended or your grades if they were high? Also, should you put everything you have done in college or only relevant things that you have either been involved in for long or had a large impact in?

Student

I have many pictures with friends and family on my social media pages where I question if I should leave this material, or remove it because of my current job searching.  I'd like to believe that employeers wouldn't mind seeing a legal individual enjoying themselves with friends and family to a certain extent, showing they are social and like to have fun with others.  When thinking about your personal social media, and what employeers might see, what are the limits one should have on profile pages?  Should one delete all pictures involving alcohol?

Student

This question ties in nicely with mine. If I would be better suited to have public social media profiles as opposed to private, I'm interested in how much fun is too much fun on social media. Networking is an essential element to a successful career and without bar crawls and tailgates how could we meet such incredible people?

Student

I like the idea of looking for alternative ways to reach consumers, such as, product placement. I also belive that providing my twitter account isn't necassary for providing information about myself. I think thats stepping boundaries unless the position requires social media pages. In that case its usually the company to give you the rights to use their social media pages and then in that case your account is of no use.

Iv'e noticed that certian T.V. shows often immitate a well known brand. For example, many shows on the Nickelodean network use "pear" devices instead of Apple products, but the devices are replicas of Apple's versions. Do networks like Nickelodean have to get permission to create their own brand that clearly resembles another brand?

I have just recently joined LinkedIn for this class. I was wondering what are some of the best ways to utilize it when searching for a job?

Student

While creating my LinkedIn profile, I didn't bother to include a link to my Twitter profile because I felt like there might be some questionable/unprofessional content from a while ago. How far back/dilgently to companies typically check your social media accounts?

Student

What is something that will make you stand out on your LinkedIn profile?

Student

I have heard that for company social media accounts, if you do not respond to a comment or question on a social media account or websitewithin two hours, it is best not to respond at all. I have been told that commenting after two hours would just make the customer/client more upset and the company would be better served just ignoring this. I don'y belive this is true, I thought it would be better to respond as soon as possible, even after several hours or days if neccessary. What's your opinion?

Do you think it is appropriate to connect with a teacher via LinkedIn ? I know in this class, it is encouraged to add your professors though in some classes I feel I made a good connection with a profesor, though I am unsure how they would feel about it ? Do you just try and see what happens or ?

Since brands a lot of times will reach out to celebrities to be embassadors for their company, and sometimes that information isn't even disclosed (think about people with large followings posting pictures on instagram of themself with a product claiming it's their 'favorite'), will this become ineffective once it becomes more widely accepted that this is advertising?

Student

I am a senior gradduating in May. When building my LinkedIn profile should I include anything from high school? I never put any of my achievements from high school on my resume, but LinkedIn is prompting me to include this information. Do most people on LinkedIn include what highschool they went to, sports they played, clubs they were it, etc., or do they just ignore the website's prompts?

Student

I see you have said most potential employers look into your social media accounts at sometime during the time you are applying. I was wondering if putting your account on private before applying for a job was a good decision or if it raises a red flag to the potential employers? Is it better to just delete the account or take the chance of the company believing you are possible hiding something?

Student

For one of the questions, you mention that employeers will google name of potential employer's and look at what they tweet about. I was wondering does this mean it is recommended that one should deactiviate their Facebook account and locked their Twitter account once they apply for a specific job? So that potential employer won't have a misconception of who you really are?

Also for the last question, does this mean that larger companies started off following you back and once they start becoming bigger on Twitter they use some sort of unfollow all applicaiton to make their feed much simpler and easy to follow? Same goes with the small companies, they started off with following as many random people as possible?

Student

I've noticed LinkedIn has been used more recently for sharing posts of interest like other social media platforms. I think the purpose of LinkedIn should be focused on networking and making connections. Does sharing non-relevant or personal posts on LinkedIn take away the professional platform it has always been for the user?

Student

This past year I was a brand ambassador for Seventeen Magazine, they sent me products and I would post on my Social Media using that product or featuring it. One of the requirements was using the hashtag Sponsored. I always thought that made the endorsement seem less believable. What are your thoughts on using the hashtag sponsored while posting for companies? Why do companies do that?

Student

With the plethora of social media marketing opportunities available to brands, what is the best strategy to figure out which social media platforms best suits a brand? Should they hold focus groups or do surveys or should they just try the most popular ones and see which channels stick and receive the most engagement and responses?

On television commercials we are exposed to things we like and things we don't.  What do you think the effect of websites gathering our information and only showing us advertisements for specific things will be on purchasing?

Student

I know a few people who don't have LinkedIn profiles because they don't like having their information in various places on the internet. When searching for a job, would employers overlook a candidate that lacks a profile because they assume they're behind the times?

Student

When completing my LinkedIn profile, I came across the summary portion and wasn't sure how much to write. I looked at a few other peoples profiles and the amount of words and descriptions in some summaries were very short, while others were very long. Which would a professional employer rather prefer?

Student

I've heard compelling elements regarding use of linkedin.  Some have said its very important and others saying that its a waste of time.  Personally I believe its been usefull in regards to connecting with old professors and classmates.  Is linkedin and the industry in which inividuals use it specific to its field?

Student

Should you have your LinkedIn profile private or open to everyone? I would assume if it was open to everyone then you would have more people view your profile and want to connect with you. Is it normal to connect with everyone who requests to?

The question that I have regarding this week's topic is it appropriate to connect with people on LinkedIn that you have not met or ever spoken to previously?

Student

As I build my LinkedIn I notice that some people include high school and jobs from high school. Is this important to add or is it something that can be left off?

Student

I've been working on my LinkedIn profile to submit for class, and one question I've come across (and I've asked some of my friends and none of us seem to have consensus), is: how much should you put into the summary on your LinkedIn page? Should it be short and sweet or an abbreviated version of your whole profile? Thanks!

Student

I haven't posted much on my LinkedIn (I haven't had it for very long at all) is there a balance between being too active or too inactive on the site that people should strive for?

Student

My brand is American Express. How are credit card companies advertising strategies affected by all the rankings and stats about credit card companies online?

Also, how important is it to have a summary on LinkedIn?

Student

If anybody was wondering how much employers do check social media that breaks down the data

Student

This is a super interesting article. I think a lot of people think that employers only go on our social media accounts to look for bad things, but this article makes a good point that employers often find qualities on social media that make the person more likely to be hired.

Student

My brand is also a high-end fashion brand, Yves Saint Laurent. I've noticed other students with similar brands are also noticing that their companies site was not optimized. Does this have to do with the exclusivity of the brand? How do you find a balance between optimization and exclusivity?

Student

I found this article interesting that said, "companies have been using less product placment"

If you are trying to start your own brand, what do you think is the most important aspects to include in the launching process?

What do you think helps increase awareness the quickest?

Student

How frequent should a brand use social media? It's important for a brand to stay active and post things. But how does a brand determine the apporopriate number of posts in a day or week? How do they determine when to post?

Student

My brand is Verizon and I often watch Gossip Girl and they use such obvious product placement that it's almost comical. Does product placement ever hurt instead of help the company when it is so obvious?

Student

I would say no, just because the more people see it the more it is pushed into their subconcsious mind to consider later when they need something phone related. There is potential of wearout, but if you think about it, you see friends using verizon every day and it doesnt bother you then. So a commercial or tv show with product placement won't negatively affect your position on the brand much.

Student

Is it more effective for a brand to use advertising or commercial making by specifically showing their name and what they are all about or by using a message to relate to the consumer more easily?

Student

I have had a LinkedIn profile for about 2 years now, but I rarely post/repost things on it. How important is it to be active on LinkedIn other than just upkeeping your profile?

Student

I don't necessarily think you have to communicate with people via LinkedIn unless you are looking for a job or internship. But its good to keep your profile up to date because people can see your experience and contact you if they are interested in you for an available position.

Student

I know that you should practice certain behaviors on social media, like not posting things that are too controversial, illegal or "trashy." But what are the limits as far as expressing your opinions or jokes posted?

Student

I think my LinkedIn profile looks failry professional. However, I rarely post updates. What type of content do you suggest to share on a regular basis? Should companies used LinkedIn updates regularly?

Student

My brand is Etro, a high-end Italian fashion empire. Their clothing is mostly seen on celebrities and familiar fashion icons. They point this out on their social media by reposting pictures of these individuals that are caught wearing their clothes. My question is, how effective is doing this? How effective is it for them to recognize that a celebrity is wearing their products without the celebrity going out and actually promoting the brand? Does it seem more believable and real to consumers than say, a celebrity holding up a product on Instagram and claiming they use it every day?

Student

My brand is Ferrari. Ferrari maintains a very exclusive image. Can too much engagement from the company impact its exclusivity?

Student

My brand is COACH and after analyzing their SEO I realized they do not come up in searches as often as they should. Why do luxury brands like this allow other brands, such as Macy's and Overstock, to come up ahead of them while searching what should be in their top key words?
