Smart digital marketers are always looking for ways to take advantage of the "second screen" experience. This is where traditional television media attempts to extend the experience to mobile devices. For example, if you're watching The Walking Dead you might tweet your reactions and discuss the show real-time with others who've also tuned in.
The benefits are numerous. One, you engage your audience on a deeper level -- better encouraging them to return for the next show. Two, you have a whole network of people all with their own group of followers who are advertising on your behalf. Finally, it encourages live viewing which provides more value to advertisers.
The Super Bowl is no exception. This past weekend, if you tuned in to the super bowl, did you participate in social media with your thoughts and reactions? If you didn't, have you ever done so with a show, game or event?
Comments & Feedback
Football is not that popular in China when compares with it in the United States. But as a spartan, I definitely know how exciting a football game is! I didn't watch the Super Bowl but I did watch the Super Bowl Ads. And I have to say that the Tide ad was amazing! I like it a lot. After watching the Tide ad, I feel like it is remembered and hard to get rid of. Super Bowl ads are always the best of the industry and I enjoy watching all these creative ideas. I saw some comments of this year's ads on social media but I didn't leave mine. It feels good to see how people are engaging with those things on social media, it is one kind of opinion sharing.
I am not a huge fan of football, however, I do love getting together with friends and family and even more so, as an advertising student, I enjoy watching all of the commercials. During the game I did spend time on social media looking at my friends different tweets, snapchats, and facebook statuses, but I never posted anything about it. This being said, I have tweeted a handful on times relating to different reality tv shows using certain hastags. I regularly look up hastags as I am watching tv shows though. I like to see what other random people are saying and without going out of my way to tweet I will just look at what other people are saying on social media, specifcally, Twitter. Not only do I thoroughly enjoy looking at social media posts pertaining to whatever I am watching or interested in, but also I think it is extremely beneficial when people are discussing via social media, between brand awareness, and gaining popularity I see all the great benefits that comes from the social media engagement on a much deeper, more personal level.
I watched the Super Bowl but I did not partake in any live tweeting during the game, half-time show, or commercials. I did, however, look at what everyone else was tweeting in relation to the Super Bowl festivities. I noticed a huge divide between Eagles and Patriots fans, some disappointment during Justin Timberlake's performance and a few opinions on how the commercials made certain people feel. I am an active social media user and I can say that Twitter is easily my favorite platform to use. I love being able to see constant updates and opinions of others whether it be an opinion about something serious like politics or it be someone poking fun at someone else. Twitter is the best place to go if you want play-by-play updates from people about what is going on. I have participated in social media with my reactions about certain shows. My favorite show to tweet about is called Star on FOX. If you like shows full of suspense, music, celebrity appearances and action, I suggest you watch this show.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, since I'm from China and first time I get to know the Super Bowl is when I was a freshman at MSU. The beneficial of Super Bowl commercial is that it will attarct more and more people to visit either the live or from the internet to check out the Super Bowl Game. I saw the advertisement of the Super Bowl this year is through the Youtube advertisement. I felt really interesting and click in to watch the full videos and also leave a comment of my thouhts and reactions.
I am not a fan of the Super Bowl so I did not watch it, but I did watch other shows and use the social media. When I was in China, I like to watch the TV shows on the social media better than the television. First, the time for the show to play on the TV might not match my time schedule, so watch it later on the social media is a good choice. Then It is interesting for the people who watch the same show discuss it and watch it on the same platform. It can feel that not only you are watching the TV, but many other people also. It is very good for the people who leave alone that can hae someone to chat with about the show I like.
Personally, I did't post any stories on Facebook or Instagram during Super Bowl weekend. I know Super Bowl is most important in American, it's like Chinese Spring Festival Galas, both are traditional television media. But i'd like to browse the audience's experience through Facebook, most people post their own views by different social media, and I would like to hit the like button. I noticed one of the ads have made an impression. In my opinion, Budweiser's ads was authentically touching. By drawing on real emotional, to aim every Super Bowls heart.
I am quite the fan when it comes to Super Bowl time, mainly because of the activities that come with it. The food and gathering of friends for an event other than a holiday is always a fun time for me. I focus a lot on the commercials and the game play, not so much on social media during the game. I find it distracting from the event at hand, I like to look at social media following the game. That's when it is really busy with new trends from each advertisement that was the most popular and the best plays/photos from the game are shared everywhere as well. The only time I keep an eye on a twitter feed or any feed for updates is when Tiger Woods is playing, I follow a shot tracking page that helps me keep up with his round if I can't watch. That's really all I like to do, other than that I like to watch and not be on my phone.
I did not watch the whole game of the Super Bowl, but I do view some short videos and comments of it on facebook and instagram. I notice that there are many new and popular hashtags appear during the game weekend, I look at them and watch exciting and fun parts of the game.
On the "second screen", we can be engaging and be able to express our real-time thoughts with other audiences. I always watch the LOL game channel with my friends, and I know that many people love using their cellphones and laptops watching basketball games on "second screen". I always have great and fun times on the "second screen".
I am not a Super Bowl fans so I didn't watched this game last weekend. But I know this event is due to the inclusion of a Chinese singer in this year's guests, so I have been watching this competition news about Super Bowl this year. Through some news, I learned that the super bowl is not only an American sports feast and cultural feast, but also a spiritual feast for americans. In the super bowl game you can see skills, speed, strength, morale, victory, frustration and more important teamwork. Some news commentary super bowl is equivalent to China's Spring Festival gala. From this description, we can see how important this event is to the American people, just as the Spring Festival gala is different for the Chinese people. Although I can't understand the game, I can see that the super bowl is very important to the people who like it.
I didn't actually post any tweets or instagram stories during the Super Bowl weekend. However, I did see the Facebook Trendings and the celebrities' reactions to the game—the world is overwhelmed by this event! I am a basketball and Kobe Bryant fan, so I participated in social media with my thoughts and reactions quite often. I do believe that this is not only because I share my feelings, but also the way I am trying find my social group. I want to be recognized as a member of Kobe Bryant fans.
I personally think the "second screen" experience acutally is heavily related to the social psychology and is a win-win situation for both sides—people can find their own social groups and the brand can promote it brand without any expenses.
Can't ever say that I have done this before. I have noticed that more and more programs are trying to get people involved by utilizing Twitter. Some people are really into the interaction that Twitter provides but that is just not me. With my job, I am always answering emails, phone calls, and texts on my phone so when I am relaxing and watching TV, I try not to be on my cell or browsing Twitter. I mainly use Twitter to follow news and sports. If a breaking event occurs, a simple search on Twitter can provide different insights and reactions (I found out about the Las Vegas massacre from my Twitter feed and followed it).
The only post I made about the Superbowl was "Philly Philly" after they went up a few scores early in the game.
I did not watch the superbowl, nor have I participated online with an advertisement through social media. However, I do look at what people are tweeting about a popular advertisement on twitter, through the popular hashtags trending at that moment. In the past, I have watched the superbowl strictly for the advertisements and for the halftime show, because I honestly don't know much about football. It was always fun meeting up with your friends the next few days after the superbowl to talk about your favorite advertisements, most of which were funny advertisements. In my opinion, and probably due to the fact that I don't know anything about football, the advertisements during the superbowl is the most fun part of watching the superbowl!
One would be hard pressed to not see the many benefits leveraged by brands through second screen experience’s. This is a rather difficult topic for me to personally connect with as I have an extremely low rate of involvement on social media. My involvement is especially low to non-existent as it relates to pop culture/current events and thus I have never assisted in perpetuating second screen experience’s. I do recognize the undeniable power that these “real time” trending experiences can have on brands whether that be companies, organizations, non-profits or people.
The current brand that I have chosen to focus on for this semester is the American Red Cross, and as unfortunate as it is during times of extreme natural disasters and other crisis, they too benefit by way of increased donations and volunteers through second screen experience’s.
I just watch parts of the Super Bowl, and I was only interested in the half-time performance, like Justin Timberlake show. I did not write any comments in social media networks about thoughts. I was looking for videos and pictures of the half-time performance, there are many professional musicians and dancers in this show. Also, many people like to share feelings while watching TV series or other live shows. I have some experience to post opinions while watching concerts. I really like to post thoughts on Weibo, also posting some pictures on Instagram or Facebook. I think it is a good way to communicate with others and sharing thoughts, and I would like to look at others' thoughts and comments.
I've never watched the super bowl, but I do like to participate in social media with TV shows and movies. This is because first I think posting my thoughts on social media is a good way to record my feelings. People always get easy to forget something they once thought important or interesting. Second, I think sharing thoughts with others is a delightful thing, since l can find the group of people who hold similar thoughts and feelings with me through writing comments on social media. People agreeing with me would reply me so that I feel recognized. I also get inspired by others when I read their posts.
I watched the super bowl in the past weekend, and I am really enjoy the football game. I love to watch the super bowl, because its bring the way that people try their best for their goals. The ads during the super bowl are also really interesting. "Bud Light Knight" is the one of ads I really enjoy, a war between the 2 side of people just like the super bowl, stimulate and tense. And the humor element give people happy and relax time during the game. I participate a lot of interesting things are the social media. I love to give a comment about what I think after I see the things are really interesting on the facebook and give a "like".

I definitely love to participate in sports events, but for only sports that I like to play in usual. Unfortunately, football is not on my favoriate list of sports. I did not participate nor watch the Super bowl game. Instead, I have some experience being part of supporters of soccer teams. I am a huge fan of soccer, and I support several club teams. One of the biggest soccer event around the world, "Champions league cup" is my faviorate, and I always watch the games and news about it. Since I love soccer so much, it was easy for me to find many sources on the internet that allows me to watch live games or highlight videos. Also even for my social media accounts, I have sometimes posted news about certain game to tell my friends about the result.
I entirely participate in social media with my thoughts and reactions. Superbowl as the most popular football game, it has high exposure every year. Being part of the audiences of it could be fun and share my thoughts on social media build up the relationship with my online friends and I could have more reach through sharing my thoughts on Superbowl. Today, I believe most of the people who use to use social media would choose to post our activities on it.
Mitch Chmielarczyk, Participation.
I watched the Superbowl, we used an outside website to live stream it over the Tv because we do not have Cable. I did not partake in social media talk because my phone was broken over that weekend, but I would of it I had the chance, I usually like to give my opinion on really big events like that. Another Big one that I remembered vividly talking about was the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor Mcgregor Boxing Match. The social media aspect not only helps promote the event before it happens, all the hashtags, comments, and posts toward it give those that host the events a sense of how their sporting events are doing towards the public. if there is a huge controversy or opinion that the mass agrees on it will give feedback to the hosts on how to give their audience a better experience.
This ties into the brand I selected, Little Caesars because they partake in a lot of sports promotions in order to help promote their Pizza establishment. A lot of Americans are big Sports enthusiasts, so using sports directed ads is really successful when trying to draw attention to a certain Brand.
I watched super bowl in the past weekend, as a famous sports event, I enjoy the gaming process, it brings me passion and the game is really interesting. However, as a new fans of football, I'm still learning the rules, I like the Philadelphia Eagles, the guys in the team teach me a lot, never give up untill the last second, and the importance of team work.
I am a very stereo typical person when it comes to the Super Bowl. I only watch for the commericals and the half time show. For this I do live post. One because I know that a lot of my family watches and now that I am in college I normally don't get to watch it with them. I see this all the time with live viewership. Social media sites such as Facebook even have a feature where you can check in to see who all is watching.
Personally, I discussed stuff that happened in the Super Bowl and its commericals with the people I watched it with. However, some of my friends are big on social media and tweeted some plays that stuck out to them. Some even tweeted about one of the commercials, the Bud Light Knight one was really funny to all of us and was definitely tweet worthy. We all went to our phones for social media memes that were already being created due to some commercials and plays that happened during the game. I defnitely think people engaged in "second screen" experience during the Super Bowl because there was a lot to comment on and many different reactions to be talked about.
I did in fact watch the Superbowl this past weekend. The only form of social media communication I had was through snapchat with some of my friends throughout the game. I am not one to post many stories on snapchat or Instagram as much as I used to two years ago. Often times I use those forms of social media to promote my friends as well as my accomplishments. I also try to refrain from using social media when in social environments as it can be quite insulting to some. This Superbowl was no exception to that as my friends and I got together to watch at my house.
I do feel as though engaging an audience at a deeper level is crucial during the Superbowl. With all the competition for advertising during the commercial breaks it critical to have the audience looking at their phones after your advertisement. They will be far pressed to forget about your commercial during the Superbowl as opposed to a regular night of cable television.
In the past weekend, I did not participate in the Superbowl because I am not a big fan of football. But on the second screen, I learned about the Superbowl. So first of all, Superbowl is really good at using all kinds of social media to increase its awareness. Now it has a new way, which we called the second screen. Through the second screen, the Superbowl kind of blend in our life. It is hard to not hear or see anything about Superbowl in the past weekend. This is the trick of the second screen. In the other hand, the second screen is used widely nowadays. With the technology developed of wireless network, the second screen can be used much easier.
I watched this year's super bowl event, however I did not participate that much on social media. I did checked out some of the comments and contents about super bowl through Twitter. I saw a lot of people were saying that this year's super bowl game was exciting. While when I was checking out the facebook page regarding superbowl topics, a lot of people were talking about the 30 second spot black out during the advertising time. Right now a lot of people are saying something big happened during that 30 spot.
I am not a big fan of Super Bowl thus I did not post anything related to my social media. But I did post comments on my social media when I watch some TV shows, especially reality show. I make comments on actor's reaction or the show's plots. Sometimes I will also search for other audience's comments to see what other's feeling about the show if I found I share similar feelings like that people, I will click "like" for their comments.

I agree that having a second platform is great for engaging the audience. Although I have never personally experienced it, I have seen the episodes of the walking dead and shows like American Idol or the Voice where you can tweet at the show and it counts that as your vote. I think that for shows like that it is important to have social media as an option because most people are already logged on to it rather than having to call a hotline to make their vote.

I have watched the Super Bowl in the past weekend, and I did see a lot of interesting ads and commercials in the show. However, I did not participate in social media. I am not really intrested in football and other sports games, and I watched it to hang out with my friends and eat pizza. I actually have never participated in social media during ant show, game, or event. When I watch those shows, I will definatly stay with my friends or family. I prefer to express my though by talking to them instead of participating in social media. I don't want to waste the time of staying with my friends and family on my phone or social media.
This past weekend I didn’t participate in any social media regarding the Super Bowl, as I never have in the past. Many of the “second screen” experiences seem to happen over Twitter using hashtags, and I am not an active Twitter member. But, although I haven’t participated, I enjoy second screen experiences and find them useful. One show that I enjoy this experience through is the Bachelor. During past seasons, the bachelor would share live tweets during airing. I found this hilarious and fun as I liked to see what other people thought of the contestants. Had I been on Twitter, I would have submitted tweets to the hashtag. This was a great idea as it got viewers talking about the show and the Bachelor trending on social media.
My favorite experience regarding this topic didn’t involve social media or events, but was still beneficial. As a kid I grew up watching Psych with my mom. Every week, there was a hidden pineapple in the episode. When the show ended, viewers would text in where they thought the pineapple was. This was great as it was fun, and encouraged me to watch the show and pay close attention each week. It also got people talking about the show.
The second screen media is no longer just a trend. It’s very common to see that many people use their own devices, like smartphone and laptop, posting their comments and sharing feelings while watching TV shows or other live event. In this past week, I didn’t participate the Super Bowl to share my thoughts and reactions in social media, but I have done in other event. Like in last year, I have watched May Day’s concert in my hometown with my friends. That was my first time watching live show. I sharing my feeling by adding comments in microblogging, a Chinese social media app, also posting pictures on Instagram. Really enjoy this way of sharing.
I have watched the Super Bowl once in my life. It was about 4 or 5 years ago. I have never participated in social media with my thoughts and reactions, because I am not that interested in watching Tv.
For other show, game or event, I only have participated for World Cup in 2012. It was hosted in Brazil and I really wanted to visit Brazil, but I had to go serve Korean military. Therefore, I left a comments on social media. I don't remember what I wrote, but I did participate.
I did watch the Super Bowl, but I didn't participate in social media discussions or share my thoughts. I wasn't a fan of a lot of the commercials; I feel like a lot of them were better in years past. Also, I am not super into football so I watched but didn't give the game and commercials my undivided attention.
As for other shows, games or events, I haven't participated in social media for them either. Some of the shows I watch, like Queen of the South, have a big social media presents, but I just enjoy watching the shows, not tweeting about them.
I 've never seen Super Bowl, as a Chinese student. I know the most part of it should be performing guests. And I not to take part in any social activity about super bowl. the only one of ones I particpated in should be the Victoria's Secret of 2017. After viewing Gigi Hadid will join in this show. I took part in social activities. because she is an recial discrimination, I don't want to her come to my country. So I join in an online boycott activity.
I did not watch the Super Bowl because I was not interested in the football game. However, I palyed the Dynasty Warriors 9 on the PS4 this week. I used all my social media to share my thoughts and reactions of this game. I am the big fan of the Dynasty Warriors, thus my social media can help me exchange my thoughts with the people who like this game as well. I wrote many dissatisfaction about this game because there are many problems that can not be tolerated. I was very disappointed. I also wrote the Twitter under the developer of this game, KOEI TECMO, and I see many people have the same thoughts as I have. Social Media is good because it become a way to help us to express opinion and allow the right people can see the opinion.
This past weekend, I watched "Super Bowl" on the television. This was my first time to watch American football and I had a very great time on it. The reason I watch this is that my favourite singer Yifan Wu had a performance at the "Super Bowl". I retweeted some tweets about his performance at the "Super Bowl". What's more, I also wrote blogs about his performance in the Instagram. After I retweeted the content about "Super Bowl", I was surprised at lots of Americans love Yifan Wu. Becuase his a Chinese singer, at first I thought his not that famous in America. However, the real thing is, he is famous in America.
In the past weekend, I did not tuned into the super bowl. But I have heared that a Chinese star named Kris Wu performed for the super bowl live. And I saw there were many disscussions and comments on the social media. For me, I have been posting and discussing my own reaction about varity shows in the social networks. Each individual has a different thoughts and comments on social media, so it's good way for advertisers to approch target audience's thought.
I didn't watch the Super Bowl. As a Chinese student, i'm not very interest about the football. However, i have been participate in social media with my thoughts and reactions in lots of TV show. I am the person who like to share my thoughts with others. I like getting approval, and if anyone is in line with what I think, I will be very happy. This is a good way to help us find like-minded people. This week, i watched the Winter Olympics games. Even though the game has not started yet, I've started to support my country on all the social media.
For me, I watched the 52nd Super bowl a little bit such as the half time show which was the most attractive part to me. I also did participate in social media with my comments about this half time show with my friends. Because I am not a huge fan of football. In addition, I don't know much about the rules of football. Thus, the half time show became the only period I could identify with. In my opinion, each year's Super bowl will bring a huge traffic flow on different social media platforms. Various brands or stores will release some related products or hashtags to Superbill in order to attract customer's attention. In general, this kind of heavyweight competition will bring a great traffic flow and exposure to brands.
While I did tune into a portion of the Super Bowl, I wasn't able to view commercials, which means I didn't do much tweeting. That said, I have in previous years. I distinctly remember tweeting about Budweiser's commercial and Mtn Dew's puppy monkey baby, even sharing videos of commercials and using branded hashtags. I used to participate in social media more when it came to award shows or sporting events, but not so much anymore. I'm more likely to share an opinion or friendly tweet when it comes to current events or trending hashtags like #WhyMyNameIs, which was a hashtag that prompted people to share the origin story of their name. While I don't do this often, I do like to participate in the social conversation and hearing perspectives from around the world, all made possible with a searchable, trackable hashtag.
I did't watch the show as the international students, I rarely know aboout it. However, I did watched word-cup game before. The world cup is the world's highest honor, the highest specification, the highest gold content, the highest visibility of the football match, and the Olympic Games is also known as the two top sports events of the global sports, and even the largest sporting event in the world covering the Olympic Games. People are excited by the enthusiasm of football, all of which are thrilled for the four - year event.
Football in my view is a culture, a simple culture, a smart culture, a warrior's culture, a happy culture and an inspiring culture. This is the embodiment of the world cup from the first Ulla.
I did watch The Super Bowl over last weekend. It was a crazy game to say the least. I decided not to take to social media with my thoughts/reactions to the game. I was happy with the outcome and did not really see a reason to boast more. I have posted a video of a game winning shot before. I thought it was an insane shot that went in during a basketball game. I shared my thoughts on it because of the quality of the shot not because the person taking it though.
This past weekend, I tuned into the Super Bowl as a very nervous Eagles fan. I was really excited for the big game and I did happen to participate on social media. I mainly used Twitter to voice my excitement after the Eagles won. I also tweeted back and forth with my friend, who happens to be a Cowboys fan. In the past, I have found myself going to social media to share my thoughts on many different sporting events. I used Snapchat and Twitter to give my reactions on various different sports.
I am not a sports fan. I do not know about Super Bowl as an international we do not have the event back in my country. I therefore was not able to tune it and watch it. I however like watching marathons on World Cup Championship. I love supporting my country as Kenyan marathon champions are the best. My favourite social media participation is the Tusker Lager. Tusker is a purely Kenyan beer brand that sponsors the runners. During the games, we have a lot of social media presence with the #ImaraKamaSimba. It means as firm as a lion. A lion because it is the king of the jungle and I like associating the runners to the lions. Safaricom is another sponsor with a trending #Twaweza. It means 'together, we can'. Truth be told that most Kenyans like drinking Tusker while watching the marathons and buying data bundles from Safaricom to ensure they are on social media. The numeorus adverts in between the marathon reminds the audience of the need to purchase Tusker and Safaricom products. The two companies sell the idea of a united country. Social media shares, likes and comments whenever Kenyans take the first four positions are incredible. It is a win - win situation for everyone.
The "second screen" experience is fascinating to me because it allows viewers to express their ideas and reactions to television happenings in real time – it can also make for some pretty funny memes.
For the Super Bowl, I participated in social media chatter surrounding the commercials when I Retweeted a Barstool Sports Tweet about the unexpected five-second blackout that occurred right before a commercial break. The Tweet included an image of the black screen and a caption, "Best commercial of all time #SuperBowlLII." I thought this was pretty humorous since it was an unexpected moment of the broadcast and I liked their take on the event. And while this wasn't an advertisement, Twitter reacted to it like it was one.
Before that, I Tweeted out a hashtag during the Super Bowl two years ago that involved the possibility of winning a large sum of money. I didn't win.
I am very into sports but I also love twitter and I am always on my phone and love to tweet about games. I currently am really exited about talking about the olympics because it brings so many different countries and markets together in one place. It must be very hard to plan around what to use in ads when everyone is from a different nation.
I have never seen Super Bowl. The most well knowing thing about the Super Bowl are the commercial advertisements and performing guests. I knew this year a Chinese singer invited to perform on the stage which is so surprising to see him. Even though I am not interest about the sports, I am really like to watch the fashion show. There are four biggest fashion week in the world. One is the New York fashion week. Every year the brands will invite a lot of celebrities to their highway. I follow the trends every year.
