What's more important, loving your job or making a good living? Are these mutually exclusive? We talk a lot about digital marketing, but as professionals in the field we often feel we have insight to give about work and life. As a business owner, I feel lucky to have realized at a young age that you could "work to live" instead of "live to work."
For me, this meant starting businesses. While many of my initial business didn't work out, I've now run a Michigan based web design agency for over ten years and a Project Management software company for three. Starting a business is not the only way to be happy and successful, but I do want you to know it's a very viable possibility.
The truth is, there are career opportunities for anything that you're passionate about. While some avenues might require a business to be successful, others just require hard work and determination. Take fashion for example. While your expertise might be in marketing, you might love fashion. There are plenty of fashion designers who need marketing help. With enough networking and proving your skills, you could land the job of your dreams. Or, maybe you start a fashion blog as a business?
What are you passionate about? Do you see any career opportunities with it, business or employment?

To add onto last week's post, I also have a deep passion for basketball. I've always loved playing and watching the sport. As someone in advertising, I could see possible opportunities down the road in getting connected in some way. The only issue is that I don't necessarily want to get stuck in sales, but sometimes that's what it takes to get to the position that is desired. Did you have steps along the way that weren't desirable but you knew that it would bring you to your end goal?
Already commented on this for last week, and was hoping for a new blog post but I can bring more to this discussion.
Owning a business is hard, hard work. Life is not glamorous. Long hours, attention to detail, ego battles, and more are all apart of this deal. My father has been a great example of how to live life for me. He works very hard, has always remained ethical, and is a loving father and husband. I would start a business, but also, I have an obligation to my future wife and children to be there for them. To push my own self interest too far, even if that meant more money, would be selfish if I could not enjoy the time with them.
My question for the instructors, how have you balanced work-life and has owning your business adversely affected your relationship with family? How can this be combated?
I am a big believe in this way of living. My dad was an accountant and has always worked long days and would always come home exhausted from that days work. Because of this I realized at a young age that would not be me. I want a job that I can be passionate about and look forwad to doing each and every day. My passion is for sports and my goal is to engage in a sports marketing career. As long as I have some type of involvment in sports, I believe I will enjoy my career. And that is any type of sports. I love to watch, and follow all types of sports which gives me expanded opportunities for finding a good career in sports marketing. Sports are a huge business in our country and I have known for most of my life that my goal would be to find a career involving sports in my life. I am already looking forward to finding a job that engages me more in the sporting world.
I am pursuing a career in fashion. Like you mentioned, you start small and work your way up to the top and the better you perform the better your title and pay is. I have always been passionate about fashion and wanted to have a business roll with it. I truly do believe that if you love your job you will never work a day in your life and your ability to succeed will be much greater. I am graduating in December and moving to Chicago to work with a fashion company doing merchandising, sales, and PR. This path is very exciting and I know I have a long road ahead but I am excited about every step.
I am very passoinate about music and sports. It would be a dream to somehow use my advertising, public reations, and marketing skills to help an artist, sports team, or sports player improve their brand, make more money, and be seen by the public in a favorable light. I think if you work hard enough and make the right connections anything is possible, so I could see this being a reality.
I am torn between loving my job and making a living. Making a living means providing for your family and others which is the most important thing. Therefore, without that I personally would not feel happy or fulfilled with my life. However, if i had no one to take care of or depending on me and I wanted to be selfish than loving my job and making myself happy would be above all and the most important thing to me. I am most passionate about my career in fashion and/or broadcasting, and I look at that as busines but also my passion.
I am a firm believer in this mantra. I love having a good time and I love seeing others have a good time as well. This is why I've toyed with the idea of large-scale event planning. The Super Bowl, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, New Year's Rockin' Eve; someone plans all of these events. Someone gets to see the smiles and hear the stories the next day and know that they are the reason for that happiness.
Loving my job is definitely the most important thing to me but it is also mutually exclusive when it comes to making a good living. I definitely need both and won't compromise for that. I have no problem working my way up but thats definitely the end goal. I'm definitely passionate about fashion as well as branding, marketing and PR. My dream job would be to be someone's manager in the fashion or music industry.
As corny as it sounds, I am passionate about helping others. From a young age, I always knew I would not be happy with a job that did not someone benefit others who are less well off. That is how I decided that I wanted to work in a field which would help stop human trafficking. I see myself owning a non-profit in the future, which works with these typs of human rights issues. I feel extremely optomistic and excited for my future!
My passion has always been related towards animals, before I switched to advertising I was a zoology major so I'm hoping to get a career that somehow works in advertising and animals. I also believe that you should work to make a good living, but you should also find a job you love, or at least tolerate. Making a good living isn't worth staying in a job you absolutely hate, so hopefully I get lucky and find a job where I can make a good living, and also love it!
I am passionate about advertising, especially brand strategy. Lots of companies are doing analysis about brand, trying to position themselves appropriately and establishing a good bussiness model based on that brand. A good brand values more. With advertising background, I think there are some opportunities both on advertising agencies and business companies. My previous internship expeiences could be beneficial.
I'm passionate about traveling to different places throughout the world. I've traveled througout different places in the world with my family and it opened my eyes to the unique lifestyles and cultures that are out there. I think this brings me employment opportunities because I think it's important to be worldly and know how to deal with different types of people whether it be cultures or personalities. It could potentialy bring me business opportunities if I looked for a job that dealt with business globally and that could be something I could see myself doing.
I am passionte about music and cars. I would like to work in a field where I can mix business and passion. That is why I would like to work in the automotive industry. There are fantastic career opportunities in the sector and this is I chose to study abroad in Michigan, the land of the American carmakers. I hope to work for an automaker after graduating, in the United States or in Europe. I would like to evolve in a business environment in which I can let my passion feed my creativity and make me enjoy what I'm working for.
I have always lived with the philosophy that I want to do what makes me happy. I never know what makes me happy until I try it though. So, loving my job could make me happy or making a good living might make me happy, I will not know until I try one or both. My passion though lies with incorporating creativity into whatever I do. I am on the management side of advertising, but would love to be able to have a creative aspect to my career.
I believe it is more important to work to live instead of live to work, people nowadays are more willing to find a job that earn more money; however, young age people have more opportunities to looking for different jobs that they want, so that they are able to compare. I am passionate about looking for job relate to advising because I love to being a creative person. There are many career opportunities and i will need to take some time to find out which kind of career makes me feel passionate about itl
Everybody want to be wealthy. In my opinion, loving your job is very important when you trying to start up business. Right now I'm interesting in marketing. Therefore, if there has some career opportunities about marketing. I will try to get into the company and learn about the detail about this work. I think more work experience will lead to success your business.
I think making a good living is more important than loving your job. I heard lots of people talk about their dream job when they are in college, however, people can not always get what they want. Maybe something you like can not earn the money, some jobs which are pretty boring can earn tons of money. I think people will choose to making a good living eventually if they can not find the job they want which can also earn the money.
I have always been interested in fields that are the polar opposites. I came to state as a lyman briggs major with zoology and computer science to now a advertising major and a theatre minor. My passion has always been on the creative or explorative side. I enjoy marine biology, advertising, theatre, and geology. All subjects under those fields I have always had a huge passion for. With advertising and theatre I hoped to work the film business and help promote movies, plays, etc. Hopefully my passions in advertising and theatre come true!
Right now, I'm really interested in Account Management. I love exploring different facets of advertising, however. I've recently been experimenting a lot with Adobe InDesign and my artisitc potentials. Overall, I'd say I have a passion to be creative. I think that career opportunities for creativity are virtually limitless. So in this sense, no, I don't think that happiness and success are mutually exclusive. I think it's all about finding balance with what you enjoy doing, and exploring ways to use that to benefit your success.
I remember being in elementary school and being told you should find what you love doing and get a job doing that as a living. As the years went on, I lost that vision and eventually had no idea what i wanted to do. I still don't know exactly what I want to do. I love helping recovering addicts, but a non profit organization doesn't really have promising careers, plus I don't ever want to do that as a paying job. It has sparked my interest in other non profit organizations and maybe being able to help out in event planning and coordinating. I still wonder about what other job opportunities I could find in the communication field. Luckily I know there's a lot of options with my degree, and working in the hospitality business for 15 years, I really think I will enjoy anything that includes making people happy. I really like this media class and wonder if anything I'm learning could be applied to my future job.
I wouldn't mind starting my own business after finding out what I'm interested in doing as a career. Right now I'm interested in Market Research, and if that all goes smoothly it would be interesting to start my own research firm. It wouldn't hurt to find resources on being an entrepreneur, but right now I'm more focused getting my foot in the door for my field.
I don't think I'd ever want to run my own buisness, I like reward with minimum risk. Taking this course has made me realize that I can work for almost any company with the skills I've accumulated. I had no idea that ALL buisnesses use some form of advertising and marketing. I've talked to a lot of recent grads and their advice has been to apply, apply, apply and you WILL find your dream job. I'm very passionate about the outdoors, travel, and vegitarian food options. Going into one of those fields and doing advertising would be my dream job but I think the people you work with and for are even more impotant. I'd like to have a job where the employees work together, not against each other to create great content for a company we care about. I also really value personal health and would want the company I work for to have a gym and healthy options.
I am interested in communicating with people and also build the relationship with people. In my opinon, I want to get a job that is relevant with the public relation, and also I am kind of interested in Human Resource. As for these two kinds of jobs, I think I will started it from the beginning as the employee.
For me, loving my job is way important that making a good living. I do think that making enough to support oneself is needed, but I would rather be happy than live in a mansion (which I don't even want anyways). I am passionate about creating things. I love bringing ideas together to create something wonderful. I have taken my creative passions of art and design, and have decided to persue creative advertising. With this major I hope to either work in an advertising agency or for some company/non-profit. I hope to either design printed pieces/various ads or manage social media accounts.
Being wealthy from career choice and happy is something that has lead me to rethink my major time and time again. For me, it is very important that I make enough money to not only be happy but able to provide for a family. I see myself one day owning a business of some sort and investing money. I am fortunate that I am learning skills in classes like this that will one day benefit my business and career choices. Technology and social media is moving foward at a fast rate and it is essential that I learn how to utilize such tools.
It's terrifying today entering the workforce where a majority of college grads end up working in restaurants and get stuck in ruts. That's my biggest fear about graduating in 6 weeks. This is because many feel like they aren't making enough money to support themselves to be on their own, and feel trapped.
Personally, I'm passionate about writing and telling stories. That's why I'm into journalism. However, I'm also very skilled in the world of design and online graphics, as well as photography and videography. As a result, my career possibilities are endless. I can end up being a photographer for national geographic, or be apart of NASA's team and tell stories through the ways of science. I've always loved the environment and the world around us, and currently write for an online environmental publication.
As a painter/graphic artist I certainly feel I there is potential for me to find my niche in the advertising industry. After a few semesters in art school, I realized I wanted the opportunity to express my creativity in a curriculum that was a bit more rigorous. I feel that advertising is unique in that it allows for intense creative expression while also demanding strict and professional management skills. It is a perfect balance between what I believe to be the two most important aspects of a fruitful career. I hope to one day work for an agency as an art director, making aesthetic decisions that are intended to have a powerful impact on audiences around the world. I try not to think so much about the prospect of money. I feel that so long as I enjoy my career then I am sure to put forth my best effort, which will in turn open many opportunities, one of them being economic freedom and stability.
One of my biggest fears is settling when it comes to the workplace. I have so many passions that vary from sports to the arts to medical sciences and community development. It seems to me that the almighty dollar is driving me towards certain opportunites because I have financial obligations to fulfill after graduation. I would be more likely to settle for anything remotely related to one of my passions so long as I could pay my bills. I think it is a good thing that I have such a diverse pallete of interests because it can help me from settling for the first thing I see when it comes to finding a job. A healthy balance of doing something that you love but also being able to support yourself is extremely important.
I'd love to be able to make decent money and love what I do. I know this isn't always possible but I hope I find a happy medium. My passion is stories, rather from the written word or the big screen. I want to spread these different adventures and plan to try and do this through marketing with a publishing company or film company. My ultimate goal would be to find an author I strongly believe in and be their public relation's manager. I know there are plenty of opportunities for careers in the fields I'm interested but it will take a lot of hard work to climb to the top.
I think it is very important to love and passionate about what you do. It could be hard to love what you do because of the reality. My passion is all about helping people and giving back. I want to listen people's concern, and help them get through their lives. I once told that do not get a job from what you are passionate about. But here I am majoring psychology, trying to become a traumatic counselor. I volunteer at teenage conseling center in Korea every summer ans spend time with teenagers who suffered from domestic violence, sexual assault, etc. From this experience, I learned a lot about how vulnerable people can be and reminded me why I decide to jump into this field.
I personally think that loving your job is more imporant than making a good living. I feel that if you love your job it won't seem like actual work. Eventually, I want to work in the sports and entetaiment industry as a public relations manager or specialist for a sports team, sports network, and/or a music artist or record label. With hardwork, dedication, and good networking skills, I think that I'll be able to reach my goals.
In my opinion, working to live can be a privilege for some. Sometimes your passions really can't provide a stable enough income for you to survive on, and thats' just the truth of it. For example, think about how many people would love to be singers or actors. Before they get famous, most times they don't have a stable income. It's not until they get their big break that they make enough money to provide for themselves, unless they have a sidejob or get help from family. I think that while having a passion is important, it is also important to be able to provide for yourself, and sometimes, that means living to work. I am passionate about makeup, and would love to combine that with my future career in advertising. My dream job wouldn't necessarily be starting my own business to connect the two, rather it would be working for an agency that does advertising for a makeup brand.
I'm verty passionate about giving back. I love non-profit work and hope to create my own one day. I also love fashion, sports and marketing and I hope to incorporate all of those things in a way where I can be involved in communites and making a positive difference in the world and in peoples lives.
I am passionate about website design, so used to looking for some website design based company to get my intern. Because I lack computer science knowledge, it is hard for me to become a professional website designer. But, since it is a digital era, I can improve my skills as well as find my any other career goals.
I'm very passionate with helping individuals. My dream career was to start my on non-profit and connect people of certain communities to the services they are in need of. Right now, i work for a non-profit in Pontiac,MI and i have to admit it is a very hard job but the benefits that come out of seeing a homeless person have food and clothing is something that makes me feel great as a human being.
I think that loving you job is more imporant than making a good living. With that said though, i think that it is also imporant that you are able to provide for your family and yourself. For example, just because you like photography, doesn't mean you have to be a photographer to enjoy it. What i mean by that is, at the end of the day work is work and you are there to make a living and make money to provide for yourself. If you are lucky enough to be doing something you love while simultaneously having a good living than you are living the dream. I am really passionate about music and film. My dream career would be directing music videos. I am hoping that through my hard work and dedication I will be able to acheive this goal.
Loving your job is always more important than making a good living I feel. I don't see these as being mutually exclusive though because for me to love the job or work I'm in I need to be paid well for my work too. It should be top priority for everyone that works to make sure they enjoy what they are doing because if they don't, then what's the point of making yourself miserable? I think a lot of people have a dream of starting out a company for having their best job, but for some this might require more time and effort than they're comfortable with which is why it's also important to look in the corporate world as well. Ever since a young age I have always been passionate about cars. I see many different career opportunities with cars and it's a goal of mine to work a job that is somewhat related or tied to cars. Whether this means the business behind cars, physically working on them, or working on marketing/advertising plans for a specific vehicle are a few different ways I've thought about keeping this tie. I think only experience can tell what someone is really after though.
I think it's more important to love your job as opposed to making a good living. I'm passionate about theatre. Some career opportunities I've seen within the market is through public relations and marketing. With my current internship I'm learning about different ways to express my love for theatre outside of acting.
I think you career can be something you love if you want it bad enough. While some people go into a job just for the money eventually they'll go back to what they love doing. I love fashion and working on commercial ads for the fashion industry would be the dream, but I think it takes time and hard work to reach your ultimate dream job.
I always believe that out passion and expanse are valuable. I helped my friends and family in everyday life. At the same time, I was always fascinated by music, swimmings, standard media, and the entertainment industry. After years of thought and questioning, I combined the two interests together and discovered a passion for becoming an aspiring talent agent or manager. Depending on the state I work in, I see a road to serious financial opportunity which eventually evolves to a good living. so i will always keep moving to live better work.
I am passionate about sports and would love the oppunity to work with a big name sports team like teh pistons as a way to combine my passion and my future arrer in advertising.
How important it is to be passionate about what you do. I passionate about Advertising but to get a job in advertising is difficult for me. I want to be a marketing executive at a company when I graduate and I want to because I know I will love my job. I like to communicate with people, so I will be definitely love this job.
I am passionate about sports and anything that has to do with athletics and exercise. The innate passion that comes with sports makes me want to be involved with them for the rest of my life. There are so many career opportunities when it comes to athletics and they can range from the health field to business and everything in between. Athletics are definitely a "work to live" career for me and I will enjoy it my whole life.
I don't think loving the job and making a good live are mutually exclusive. Lots of people are doing what they love and earn a lot from that. I feel what's most important is whether we can be an expert in what we love, not treat it like a part time interest, because that's not enough for making a living. For me, I love movies. I'm always passionate about movies. It'll be a dream job if I could work in movie companies in U.S.. But that's so demanding. I don't see many opportunities there for me.
The most important thing to me in a job is always going to be changing. Since I am an undergraduate with a lot of student loans and want to be able to afford a place to live on my own and a new car, the amount of money I make (the living) is more important. Once those things are set aside and taken care of, I am able to shift my focus on loving my job. I do think that there could be a happy medium where I wouldn't hate my job and make a pretty good amount of money at the same time - but if all else false, making a good living is where I would start. I am passionate about the fine arts (specifically acting and singing). I guess I could become an agent or find ways to use my major with advertising to help promote the artists looking for work or show their ability to do really well in any show, movie, play or soundtrack/concert. I could also use this to help better brand myself - I could find talent and then make sure they are absolutely ready to take on Hollywood or the entertainment business before hiring them and representing them as their agent. Another thing I am passionate about is music - I would love to help composers get into a place to perform their work to prove that they are capable of making a movie soundtrack for various movies. I feel as though music is part of my essence and I love it a lot. I could do a lot with this - but I would need to continue thinking. Maybe with the help of Facebook and other social media platforms helping these artisits or composers become more visible to the public could help them.
I have always been passionate about helping people. Even as a child I would always go to my elderly newborns house and help her around the house especially when she had fallen and broken her arm. She could not cook or clean like she could with bother her arms. Every day after school I would go over and help her and she would help me with my homework. My love for helping people landed me at MSU where my first major was nursing. After long nights and a lot of work I realized that nursing was not for me. Not because it was too hard but because working with sick people is a sad business and I want to make the world a better place and see the happiness the world has to offer. I realized that there are other ways to help people other than through the physical body. Advertising to me is amazing because of the many things you can do with it. I think it would be amazing to work for and advertising agency where I get to work on a vast variety of campaigns from making people smile with Coca-Cola or working on a nonprofit campaign for a charity that is helping save many lives. The thing is for me I’m passionate about life itself. I love many things and don’t want to just focused on one. My dream is to grow and work with as many people as I can and change the world a little at a time.
for me i think live to work are more important, i always think if people can chose the job which are their love to do, will have more power to do this job better, every body should love to do what they like to do, intereting job always better than boring jobs, also when you enjoy your work you can do better works, then you can get better paycheck, so you can make you live better.
I am passionate about sports. One of my dream jobs would be working in the advertising or communications department of a professional sports team or working with a large sporting company such as Nike. I have several other professional passions that I have looked into but anitially, working with a professional team is one of my dreams. Are there any places that ost these kinds of positions? What kind of research can I do to find positions in the field I wish to work in?
To build on last week, I love comedy and I really want to implement it into my writing. As a journalism student, there is very few actual satire/comedy papers left out there but there is a ton of alternative news humor writing for television I can do. I think it is important to always consider the multiple secondary ways to reach your goals rather than always looking at career goals as a one dimensional pathway. How can I still do what I love and make money doing so?
