What's more important, loving your job or making a good living? Are these mutually exclusive? We talk a lot about digital marketing, but as professionals in the field we often feel we have insight to give about work and life. As a business owner, I feel lucky to have realized at a young age that you could "work to live" instead of "live to work."
For me, this meant starting businesses. While many of my initial business didn't work out, I've now run a Michigan based web design agency for over ten years and a Project Management software company for three. Starting a business is not the only way to be happy and successful, but I do want you to know it's a very viable possibility.
The truth is, there are career opportunities for anything that you're passionate about. While some avenues might require a business to be successful, others just require hard work and determination. Take fashion for example. While your expertise might be in marketing, you might love fashion. There are plenty of fashion designers who need marketing help. With enough networking and proving your skills, you could land the job of your dreams. Or, maybe you start a fashion blog as a business?
What are you passionate about? Do you see any career opportunities with it, business or employment?

I am senior right now, sometimes I just got confuse, confuse about my future. I know I want to be a business man in future and I see some career opportunities, but I still worry about what's my future look like. Here is my question for this week, some people want to do that job becasue they like it, but after few years they just tired doing same thing everyday, then they just don't like this job anymore, what they can do or what thing they should do to keep their passion?
This topic is a constantly crossing my mind... will I wake up every morning excited to go to work? Will I love the fact that I spent four years at a university in hopes of finding the job of my dreams? I think what is so scary is that we could all have a passion but this passion could possibly not pay enough. To me, it needs to be a happy medium. I love working hard and with that should come a decent financial return. My overall goal is to get a job in the Sports Business world as an event planner. I would never accept a position that pays lower than what I think a degree could allow me to get paid. Going to school to get an education is such a standard now-a-days that I really hope a salary paying position will all work out in the end. I want to be able to go to work thinking "wow I don't really work because I love my job so much." If that is what happens after graduation, I will be highly satisfied that all of my hard work has paid off.
I think that loving your career and having a good income is equally impotant. Loving your job is very important when it comes to future happiness. No one wants to be miserable when they are making money. The best type of jobs are the ones that don't feel like a job. So following you passion is number one, but having an income you can live comfortably in is important. Doing the job you love, but not making enough money to live the life you want to live will just add stress. So both are incredibly important; having a job that is your passion and making an income you're okay with. I am passionate about fashion, so I can see myself working with fashion company and help create their website/blogs and running the media-depatment of their business.
I am a senior student and this semester I will be graduate from MSU. I often ask myself these kinds of questions. What is your future plan and what kind of person you want to be. As for now, I really want to get an involvement in advertising industry, one of the most important reason is I want to show the people what I have learn in these years. From class, I have learn a lot from how to analysis the digital market and how to improve your social media platforms. I am really interested in using social media platforms to create a campaign.
This is an interesting blog post, I think about this quite often. My biggest fear in life is working so hard for a degree and never finding a career that I love. The reason I chose advertising as my major is because there are so many different routes that can be taken in this field. I am inspired by fashion and this is something that I want to incorporate in my career. I see a lot of career opportunities in Chicago and New York, and I would love to one day live in one of those cities to follow my dreams. My biggest goal is to either market for a fashion company or work for Vogue. Loving your career is very important, but it goes hand in hand with making a good living. I want to one day make good money and be happy in the place that I am in.
My question: What do you suggest is the best way to network with future employers? I know LinkedIn and Handshake are good social platforms to meet future employers, but I don't see either of those networking sites to be personal enough.
I have two seperate passions which may be able to coinside, but I do not know if I would really want them to. I really enjoy making a difference in the world and creating a change for every human on this plant. So I would love to be able to work at a nonprofit because they make differences for those who may not be able to help themselves. I think that human rights are so important and I want to fight for people who may not be able to fincially, phsyically, or mentally fight for themselves. We need better things in this world. My other passion is for event planning and I would love to be able to start my own business and help people set up the events that they had only dreamed about.
I am very passionate about my music. I've created many career opportunites and met many connections while working on my career. I'm not only an artist but I am a business woman. I'm creating my own Org on MSU campus called "AMD" which stands for Artist Makes Dreams. I have my own t-shirt line and I host events for my org. My employment is evolved around art and beat making (which is what I do) so its still contributing to my career.
One thing I'm really passionate about is summer camps and the benefits, values and freedom kids learn by attending summer camps. I have gone to a summer camp since I was in elementary school and have really seen how it benefits me in almost every aspect of my life. I have worked at a summer camp the past three summers as a counselor but it wasn't until recently I realized that I could probably find a full time position at one. Summer camps need advertising and marketing just as much as any other business and I am excited to look into camps that offer those opportunities. Doing something I love for a living has always been a criteria for my future employment, I want to leave work feeling rewarded and happy everyday.
As I look forward to retirement, I would love to start a part-time social marketing business for small organizations that do not have the funding to employee a full-time communications person. I am especially interested in the non-profit sector where individuals are trying to make a difference. As we all know, you will not get rich working for a non-profit - unless you are a Clinton.
This is a good topic. When it comes to starting a business, I would love to do it, but I require two things first.... I need the sufficient background material so I am competent enough where people will trust me. Once I have that, I would need to find a way to get investors.
I would love to own a business, I think I have a good mind for management and my parents are business owners (my father has been a private practice surgeon for 30 years). Therefore, getting back to the point, I would love to start a business once I have those two things. I have no problem working in my 20s until an opportunity comes along where I can do it. A lot of life is logistical, not necessarily what I want all the time.
I am really passionate about marketing for video games or sports or film. The entertainment industry is fascinating to me, and is very humongous in potential. If I could do a Marketing/PR firm surrounding entertainment, that would be ideal. I would need to find a niche market, and the right people around me to achieve growth.
Anything is possible, and life is never done until you literally stop breathing!
My question for the professors would be, when did the lightbulb go off when you knew you had to go off on your own? Was it a particular event? I know I personally have trouble with authority sometimes, which actually, is a good thing, it means I think independently. Why is independent thought not valued? It should be.
My dad used to own a luxury home construction business, so I grew up around that industry and grew to absolutely love interior design. I am passionate about it and I would love to take that background along with my knowledge of marketing and advertising and turn it into a business. I am not looking to own a huge company some day, but I would love to own a small boutique with home furnishings and decorations. I believe marketing is essential for running a successful business, so I will use my education in marketing and advertising and pair it with my love for interior design so I can "work to live."
Coming from a background where opportunities are limited and available to a few It took me a while to agree that I can actually Work to live. I love anything that facilitates me to interact with people - Marketing communications. In the future I would like to manage community relations projects.
I am passionate about advertising, because I chose advertising as my major. I like to watch all kinds of advertisements, and I find it very interesting and fun. I come from China, but I think that the overall quality of China's advertising is not as good as the United states. There are many advertising companies in China, but many of these companies are not professional, so I often see a lot of no quality advertising on TV, so I do not have any interest to spend time to watch it. So I hope that after graduation, I can make China's advertising industry will become more professional, let China's advertising has become more interesting, so that the audience is willing to spend time to watch a good advertisement. So I think China's advertising industry will have great potential for development, with business opportunities.
I am passionate about cultures. I love travelling to explore different cultures through their foods, art, history and language. I come from Guatemala, a country the size of Michigan that has over 22 languages. My country is rich in culture and that is why I want to go back to explore it and see how my skills in communication can help bring this culture out into the world. I want to start my own agency back home to promote small Guatemalan-based businesses that celebrate our country and what it offers. I think that it is completely possible since there are many people in Guatemala that want to celebrate its heritage.
I have currently started a small business in real estate working with my brother and father. It allows me to buy homes which is exciting, and after that we either sell them or rent them. This is something I really enjoy doing and look forward to doing more of inn the future. As of now I plan on making it my career for the time being and hope to take it to the next level when I graduate. It is a lot of work initially getting the homes fixed up and rent, however once you get everything in place it allows for free time, working on your own schedule, and the opportunity to pursue other interests. I look forward to building a team in the future and exploring more options. How many employees do you currently have working for you?
There are a few television shows that I really love and it interests me the way they promote themselves and run their social media accounts. Being a huge fan of a show it would be easy to come up with content because of the knowledge that I have. I would love to work for one of the big networks someday and do something for their marketing/promotions team. I think that if I am doing something that I love it will make it worthwhile and this is something I have always had in the back of my mind as a goal.
Since I'm from an Asian family, I grew up with my parents telling me to become a doctor. I went with it for awhile until I realized that life is more than just money. For a long time, I didn't know what I was passionate about but as I grew up, it became more clear to me. I love reading fashion blogs and observing their photo process that they have to go through to gain more audiences. Instagram is also one of my passion. I find myself constantly looking for new information that will help me improve my social media skills. And of course, taking this class is one of the ways. I can see myself going into social media marketing but at the same time I can also see myself enjoying the account manager position.
It is tough to go against what your parents idea for your life is. My dad and brother both were accountants so I felt some pressure to follow in their footsteps. But once you find what your passion is, you have to follow it. It is important to be passionate for what you do and I think once you realize your passion, it's eas to find a career which you can enjoy and in turn, enjoy your life in the working world more.
I am passionate about martial arts! I love wrestling, boxing and jiu-jitsu. I would love to have a career where I am involved with martial arts. The clearist avenue I can think of is working for the UFC. The UFC is the largest professional mixed martial arts league in the world. I think your right, there is a place for marketing and advertising in just about every industry. I agree with this post on so many levels as I too believe you can "work to live."
I'm passionate about makeup, coffee, fashion, animals, and being vegetarian/the environment (which coincide... and hopefully I'll be vegan someday). I do see potential career opportunities with it because if I start a successful blog, or even vlog I could rise to the top very quickly, especially because all of the things I'm passionate about are very 'in' right now. If I were to start a vlog it potentially could become a career (dream job lol) and I could become self employed, which would be dope.
I think it's most important to do what you love above all else. If it's something you love, you will probably work hard at it. Hard workers more often get good jobs and promotional opportunities. This, in turn, will lead to a lucrative career in what you love. I am passionate about travel and the outdoors. I think there are several agencies that focus on travel, travel companies like Expedia and opportunities to work with tourism companies or the National Parks. All of these are opportunities I have researched online. I think there are several opportunities there to build a meaningful career. If you do work for money, what propels you to stay at that company other than monetary reward?
I love movies and television shows, I also like to browse the interent a lot. It only makes sense that online advertising be the field I take. There is a lot of creative stuff I coould to help advertise both movies and television shows online.

One of my biggest fears about leaving college is that what if I can't find a job that I truly love? That I'm not just doing for the money but that I actually think I am making a legitmate impact on the lvies of people around me and in my own life. Whether if we like it or not, work is a huge part of our adult life and it will consume a lot of our time. For me personally finding a job I am passionate about it imperative. I personally really enjoy humor and comedic style writing. It is how I have choosen to shape most of my journalism career at MSU and it is something I think I am really good at. I know this field of journalism is very small and very competitive. While I don't think I'll be working at the New Yorker anytime soon, I do think there is a strong chance of me working in some independent comedy paper sometime soon. There is also lots of alternative news television writing teams looking for new and fun voices to join their team. Although it isn't traditional media I definitely see the potential avenues of success I can follow to do what I want to do.
