Consider sharing it with your friends.

What's more important, loving your job or making a good living? Are these mutually exclusive? We talk a lot about digital marketing, but as professionals in the field we often feel we have insight to give about work and life. As a business owner, I feel lucky to have realized at a young age that you could "work to live" instead of "live to work."

For me, this meant starting businesses. While many of my initial business didn't work out, I've now run a Michigan based web design agency for over ten years and a Project Management software company for three. Starting a business is not the only way to be happy and successful, but I do want you to know it's a very viable possibility.

The truth is, there are career opportunities for anything that you're passionate about. While some avenues might require a business to be successful, others just require hard work and determination. Take fashion for example. While your expertise might be in marketing, you might love fashion. There are plenty of fashion designers who need marketing help. With enough networking and proving your skills, you could land the job of your dreams. Or, maybe you start a fashion blog as a business?

What are you passionate about? Do you see any career opportunities with it, business or employment?

I think that its a bit of both but that loving your job its more important. For me something that  I am passionate about is travel. I love to travel and I am looking at trying to connect business and travel. I think its a growing career and I believe that there is a lot of potential for the future. I think combining business/advertising and travel is a great way to connect two things that I really enjoy.

I really interested in start a bussiness about advertisement. My plan is work a few years after graduate for some seed money, then I will create a advertisement studio alone or with some friend that with a common goal. That will be so fun I think.

Growing up I always felt a sense of gratitude whenever I helped my friends and family in everyday life. At the same time, I was always fascinated by music, movies, standard media, and the entertainment industry. After years of thought and questioning, I combined the two interests together and discovered a passion for becoming an aspiring talent agent or manager. Depending on the state I work in, I see a road to serious financial opportunity which eventually evolves to a good living. I can imagine the feeling of gratefulness and satisfaction after securing a serious contract, or landing an important role in a movie for my future clientell. Regardless of what direction I decide to take in working within the entertainment industry, the goal is to help others grow because something beneficial may come out of it. There is no denying that we enjoy life by the help and society of others.

It's hard to find the perfect job for anyone; all jobs come with stress. I am very passionate about filmmaking and working behind the camera. I haven't found the position that I like the best yet, but I know that, that work atmosphere is the one for me. I also love live performances and working with big shows, so I could really see myself working behind the scenes in either location. I've worked with Disney before, and I would love to go back and work in their studios or for one of their many live shows.

I think it is hard to find a perfect job; work environment, salary can be challenging. For me, I find my advertising classes to be very interesting but I am not sure that I am going to find a job in advertising field because the competition is too fierce in today's advertising market in my hometown, South Korea. Now, wherever will hire me, I will go. I believe everything worked its self out.

Student

I think that you should ultimately do what will make you happy, but I you have to give a significant thought on that job making you a good enough living that will keep you happy. For me personally I really wanted to start my own blog that will feature my photography. As it still is a big dream for me I am working on creating and developing my portfolio and learning how to become maybe a freelance photographer. Although I don't think it will become my career I really am passionate about it and want to make something out of it.

Student

I think that making a good living as well as loving what you do is equally important. I still have yet to find something I think I could love to pursue in the work field, but I have picked up a econd minor to explore more options. I think that people can live a fuller life if they love what they do. I believe that it would give someone a bigger purpose in life.

I am very passionate about sports. My whole life was surrounded by sports. Every second of the day my parents were either helping me improve my skills or driving me to practice. But, all the practice did not work out in my favor. I have realized that even though, in high school, I exceeded as an above average athlete, that my talents were not good enough. But, I know that my drive and passion about the game of hockey will help me someday do some type of marketing for an NHL team, so I guess everything worked its self out.

I completely agree when you say "work to live" not "live to work". I too have recently started my own company. My company Filteristic creates custom Snapchat Geofilters. We offer complete marketing consulting and analytic reports to our clients as well. Being a Junior a feel this is the perfect time for me to start a company. I have 2 years fo me to make my mistakes, learn from them and grow. I am extremely passionate about marketing and innovating the advertising world. I plan on never working for someone a day in my life. I feel that with passion comes drive and with drive comes success.

After taking the course Media Planning I have developed an interest in that aspect of advertising. As an advertising major I definitely have the opportunity to get a job within that field of advertising. Although this might not be where i first start off in my career, with hard work I can eventually make my way there. Doing what you love for wokr is very important because it can determine your happiness.

I am very passionate about sports. I grew up playing any sports I could and I continue to follow them closely. I hope to have a career having something to do with sports. I see myself being able to have a career in the marketing or PR department of a professional sports team. Using what I study and what I am passionate about to have a successful career hopefully.

Student

I had a passion for photography, which got ruined in high school when being overdone. I was very excited about marketing, but the more I do it, I think the less I want a career in it. I think now, in Advertising, I could be creative or on the management side of it. In highschool, I played volleyball and hope one day to coach it on the side. There are many possiblities. I'm a full believer in the whole if you pick a job you're unhappy, and if you pick a career you are happy.

I am really passionate about creating art that represents and sells a company to customers on different levels. I really would like to work at an advertising agency and work in the creative department. I’m a very artistic and creative person so I would be so happy if I could help design a logo, or make videos of events or take pictures that would be on a website or billboard. I want to be involved in the art sector of advertising. I think traveling would be fun so maybe working on campaigns that take place all over the world would be something I would be very interested in.

I am really passionate about digital/medical technology. I really enjoy hearing about the new technology that can better lives. Especially advancements in technology that deal with health. I know there is jobs with advertising in the health industry. I also know that you're more likely to get a job in this field if you have somewhat of a medical background. Working in the medical field as an advertiser would be something I'd be proud of because I know that I could communicate messages that could help better someone's life.

Student

I am passionate about fashion, cosmetics and luxuries. Becuase I am in Advertising major, I dont really think about doing a job that is in these fields. After reading this, I start to think about it and I think advertising has a strong relationship with these fields. For example, if I want to work for a luxury brand, I can help providing advertising suggestions or work in the advertising department in the company.

I am passionate about small business advertising. Through taking advertising classes I have found I enjoy working on projects for small, new businesses, rather than large corporations. I like the aspect of seeing a big effect in the advertising efforts put in. I also like seeing how much you can help a small business grow. I would really love to start my own advertising agency that is focused on small businesses. My plan is to work in an ad agency for a few years first to gain more experience and then work toward starting my own agency.

Student

I am passionate about media creation. I know that there is a lot of career opportunities out there such as the creative agency I started Carbon Stories. Just in the last year and a half we have been able to travel and work with large clients that without us bringing to work in the field now we would have no opportunity to do so. I know that when it comes to this field you have to put in the work and if its your passion it will always be rewarding.

Student

Personally I am pretty passionate about sports, sports have played a huge role in my life and I flat out enjoy participating and watching athletics. Sports can cause a roll coaster of emotion and even bring people together. I do hope to some extent I can make a career out of doing something sports related, if not I am sure there’s something else out there for me and I can just be a fan in my free time.

Student

I believe both loving your job and making a good living are equally as important, but they can also co-exist. As a senior, one of my biggest fears is failing in landing a job that I enjoy and make enough money. I am passionate about many things, but more specifically sports. As a member of the Michigan State cheerleading team I have been given the opportunity to experience numerous sporting events from the behind-the-scenes perspective. I have had the opportunity to talk to employees of ESPN, BTN, and Michigan State University whom all seem to love their jobs. It would be amazing to have a career that has both advertising or marketing and sports involved.

Student

I am very passionate about being able to be interactive with customers when I think about my future job. I have taken a huge liking to sales. Communicating with people is what I love to do and do best. There are many career opportunities in sales, but I don't want to become just another salesman. I want to start my own company and be able to expand it vastly. The only problem I have is finding what area of sales I want to take an occupation in. Everything you look at had to be sold at some point. The area of sales is so large. So the employment oportunities for sales are endless; I just need to decide what category I want to join.

Student

My friend and I were just recently discussing how important it is to be passionate about what you do. Most people settle for a job relating to their major, but that may not always be what one is passionate about. I recently just found a passion for journalism writing. I believe all types of writing are important, whether it be informational writing, blog posts, journalistic writing, etc. I find it extremely powerful to have the ability to express yourself in words and convey different messages and meanings while doing so. It does not matter the content of the writing, as long as your message is clear. Since I just recently discovered my love for writing, I am hoping to find a job/career that will allow me to express myself, and the company I represent, through writing. Regardless of the career path I end up taking out of college, I will continue to express myself in different ways through the power of language.

I believe that the money goes along with passion and drive. One needs to have a passion for something in order to have the ability to make money. To me, I would not want to go into work each day or do my best job if I do not enjoy what I am doing. I am very passionate about sports. So, therefore I went out there and found an internship with the MSU athletic department, which now is leading me to more summer internships in the sports industry. This passion for sports is driving me to make money and succeed in something I want to do. This will eventually lead me to make money to support myself and hopefully support a family. I am taking opportunity after opportunity to get me to the next best thing.

Student

I think it is hard to get a perfect job for people. Although they got a perfect job, problems can be occur such as, bad work environment, unfriendly co-workers and etc. I believe most people do work to make money. However, we have an opportunity to utilize our major and get a job which is related to our major. I passionate about Advertising but to get a job in advertising is difficult for me. I am saying this because my country Korea is having very bad youth unemployment nowadays. most young men and women just work to live. So, I think finding career opportunities is very important for me and try to work in any places and get many experience from it.

Student

I belive if you go where you are passionate the money will follow. Determination and hard work will always pay off and your happiness can come from your sucess. I'm passionate about traveling, and I want to work for an advertsing company that allows me to travel and advertise for resorts around the world. I also want to intermix my love for event planning. So working with banquet and events staff for things like concerts, weddings, celebrity events and things like that would be ideal. I want to try to work for the four seasons hotel because they are well know for admirable staff around the world. A very important aspect in any company I work for is liking my co workers. Since I would be willing to dedicate 80 hours a week, I would like it to be with people who make it enjoyable. Is it too much to compromise to move jobs just becuase you dont like the people you work with? Maybe. But your happiness should always come first.

I think the most common thing is poeple are doing the job just for living not for hobby. Not everyone can do a great job that as expect. So how to treat your job is important. Some people do the job they don not like is for money. To make themselves living a good and comfortable life. So they have to the job to earn money if they like or not.

Student

I am passionate about digital marketing, blogging and fashion. I run my own fashion blog and have gotten to collaborate with some amazing brands in the process. It makes me want to absorb all the information I can about digital marketing and it feels so much more meaningful when its for your own personal brand, rather than someone elses. Hopefully I can grow my blog enough so that I can make enough income to take care of some of my usual expenses. I love doing it so much as  a hobby, it' would be great to earn more money from it than I am now.

Student

I think doing what you love and are passionate about is more important. If you love your job, you are more likely to put more effort and time on your work. This will eventually make you succeed because people who don't really care about their jobs won't put as much effort as you do. I'm passionate about advertising and marketing, and I hope to work for one of the well-known advertising or marketing companies to learn the real work. I can't wait to learn more, and imagining myself as an advertiser excites me.

Student

I think it is possible to find job that you can make a good living. After that, you have the financial based to achieve your interests. In addition, you may foster the interest in your own job. For example, I had an intern this summer related to start up business. Before I had no interested in it and I knew a little about that, but now I planned to start up my own business related to the fashion in the future. I met a friend during my intern, and we had same agreements. We planned to start up our own business.

Student

For me I would prefer to love my job and make a lot of money, but I understand that isn't always in the cards. Sometimes one or the other must be sacrificed. If I had to choose one over the other, at the end of the day, money wins. I think with the right attitude you can eventually learn to love your job. I just want a few years of experience at an advertising agency, and then to move on and open my own company. I am very passionate about guitar, and sports, but I don't know how I could implement them into my work.

Student

I believe that doing the thing you love most is way more important then making a good living. I want to be a marketing executive at a company when I graduate and I want to because I know I will love my job. It's not really what I'm passionate about but I do think it will be fun and not a hard job because I will like doing it. I wouldn't want to have my career be just doing what will make me the most money, I want to enjoy my job.

Student

I also strongly believe that loving your job and making a good living are quite important aspects that they can be mutually exclusive. It is a definite advantage if you can enjoy getting up for work every morning and at the same time make decent amount of income to support your happiness. I'm very passionate about automobile related contents, their artistic designs and techonology updates. To many people, cars are considered something more than just means of tranportation and cars can indeed make our lives easiler and happier in various ways. For that reason, im pretty certain that getting a job with my faviorite brand automaker will put me in a position where i can develop more of my passion towards researches and bring more and better career opportunites in the following future.

Student

I think that loving your job is very important and the money to me comes secondary sort of. When thinking about working for a company the culture and colleagues factor in quite a bit too. Making good money is impotant but I wouldn't just take a job I hated because it paid the most. My passion is food in the form of cooking, baking, learning new skills and techniques. I would love to work for Food Network or Martha Stewart or do something where I can combine my passion for food with marketing/advertsing. I don't know how this will all come together or what I see myself doing specifically but would love if an opportunity came along to purse both.

Student

I think it's important to love what you do, but I think it's more important to make a good living. Although you may not love your job, you might learn to love it if you're making a good living. I am passionate about design, especially interior design and anything home-related. I think I could get an advertising/marketing job for an interior design firm which would be awesome. However, I don't expect to find this right after graduating and know that I will have to work my way up befer I can really "choose" my career.

Student

It's very important for me to choose the work i love, i hope i can work in a advertisement company after graduation, this is inorder to get more experience and learn something from a good leader, because if i want to set up my own company i should have rich experience.

I would say it is not only work to live but also work to learn some skills

if you learn more skills,i believe your life will becoming easier.

Student

To me, it is important to love what you do, but it is also important to make sure you are getting what you want out of your job. A great job should have a balance of both social and economic benefits. In my current job search, it is difficult for me to choose between a job in a big city where I might not be making as much money but having a really fun time, or a job in my hometown where I will be making more money and living with my parents. The choice is hard because I just want to get my feet on the ground and start making money, on the other hand, these next five years are years of my life that I will never get back. What ever option I choose, I know that I don't have to do the same thing my whole life. I can always leave and find something better.

Student

I think it is important to find a balance of loving your job and making a good financial living. Ideally, I want to have a job that I love doing but also brings in enough money so I can provide for a family. Up until last spring, I was going to pursue a career in sales. I figured there was good money in it so it would be a good industry to go into. Come to find out, I ended up strongly disliking my job functions and realized money wasn't the biggest motivating factor for me. It took me until my senior year to realize I have a passion for helping and making a difference in people's lives that are struggling. After I graduate in December, I am going back to school for an accelerated nursing degree. In this field, I am able to do something I love and am proud of while also make a healthy living. Moral of the story is that it is never to late to do what you are pasionate about and live a comfortable life.

Student

I’ve never been afraid of chasing my dreams and that factored into my decision with my major and my plans for my future career.  In high school, I competed in a marketing competition where, as a female, I was in a male dominated category, and I didn’t let that stop me.  The category was sports and entertainment marketing and I chose it purely because it made me happy. I did not choose it because it was the easiest and not because it would look good on a resume, just pure happiness.  When I applied for college in the following years I told myself that although Sports marketing is a very difficult field to get into, that’s where I saw myself and that’s what I wanted to do with my life.  To this day people warn me that I won’t make it and that the pay is very low if I do, but none of that matters.  For me personally when it comes down to it, if you love what you do, and you’re good at what you do, you’ll be happy forever and the funds will follow.  I know it won’t be easy, but that’s a risk I will take to achieve my life long goal of being a sports marketer.  So I think loving what you do should be just as important, if not more important, as funding yourself.  If you work hard enough, I believe you can make it work.  That may be a bit naive, but that attitude has given me so many opportunities and it has gotten me to where I am today.

Student

Loving my job and making a good living are both equally as important to me. I want to make sure that what I end up doing makes me happy for the rest of my life, and also supports me and my family. I am very passionate about athletic wear. I am a "sneaker head" as some say. I am bery interested in Nike and other sports wear companies, and how they recruit and create products for their athletes. I hope to some day do that for a company like Nike, Under Armour, or Adidas. There are so many opportunities within the sporting goods world that could allow me to accomplish my dream job, and if I am able to do this I know I will be happy for the rest of my life.

Student

Making a good living and loving your job I believe are possible to co-exists together. If you wake up everyday loving what you do, it makes work a lot easier and makes you want to go to work. I am passionate about business and health care, and currently have an internship with Stryker Orthopedics. If come to realize that I can make a living off of helping people get back on their feet and giving (usually older people) an opportunity to walk again and be able to have healthy active lives, I love that!

Student

I believe that loving your job and making a good living are both neccessary elemets that must be fulfilled to be successful and feel complete. I think tht having a sincere passion for what you choose to do will make you better at it. It's human nature to be more driven when you have a genuine belief and drive towards whatever you're  doing. Sometimes you don't have the opportunity to work to live rather than live to work because of whatever extenuating circumstances. However, I do believe being passionate about your career path is a goal that shouldn't be given up on and should be continuousley worked at until it is attained. Im not sure what particular career path I plan on following, But I know myself to the point where I realized that I would have a very difficult time being succesfful in any career I'm not passionate about.

Student

I think it is very important to like your job and be passionate about your career. There are enough job opportunities out there that you CAN find something that you love! In life comes failure, just as you experienced when your initial business didn't work. I am passionate about business and finanace. I see many opportunities with it as everything these days is centered around the business world. I also see opportunity in the idea of one day opening up my own financial advising firm.

Student

I think loving your job is more important because if you don't like your job, you're not going to put your full effort into it all the time. If you love what you do, you are more passionate about going in to work every day and making the most out of your career. I am very passionate about fashion PR. I see both business and employment career opportuinites with it and plan to go into that field once I graduate.

Student

I think you're more likely to put in longer hours and work harder if you're doing what you love, and because of that, you're more likely to succeed as well. I'm passionate about graphic design and am currently pursuing a degree in creative advertising, which allows me to use my graphic design skills every day to make ads, promotional materials, and anything else in advertising. I hope to eventually get a job as an art director in order to practice my passion full time. I can't imagine majoring in anything else or being in any other professional field, so hopefully it works out in the long run!

Student

I'm very passionate about using communication and social media to ones advantage. With this I believe I would excel in public relations. With public relations I'd like to work in a high pressure enviornment and I think I can find this in crisis managment. I want to start my own public relations firm that works with crisis managment and how this can be communicated out to the public through news releases, social media, client interviews and other platforms. I believe that I need to run my own business because I like to dictate what people should do and don't like to wait to be told what to do. With the right experience and investments I believe that I can make this dream a reality.

Student

I personally feel that you must love your job first rather than planning to make a good living. The reason why I feel so is because if you love your job, there are higher chances that you may eventually perform well in your job which may eventually help you make a good living. I am very passionate about a career in social media marketing. The reason as to why I am passionate for a career in social media marketing is because I am really fascinated as to how social media can be used as a tool for promoting any brand or business. Also, since many people around the world use social media for a variety of purposes, I feel that there is a huge scope in the field of social media marketing. I see tremendous career opportunities in the field of social media marketing in the U.S. Initially, I will like to work for a company where I will be doing a lot of social media marketing in the company. Later, after getting some experience in the field of social media marketing, I will like to open my own business that deals a lot with social media marketing.

However, my question is do most of the people in today's world love their job because of the work or do people love their job because they can make a good living out of it?

Student

I think they both are mutually exclusive because you want to love what your doing as far as work and a career, because you will be doing it everyday of your life. But at the same time you want to be rewarded for the career that you love by making a good living from it. I think it important to love your job, but I do think its important to make a good living. I feel like I know more people making a decent living with the a job they have to work in order to make ends meet. I would like to meet more people who are making a successful/great living in a career field that they love, so I can feel more inspired to do the same. I am a person who loves to stay busy in more than one thing. I think I might end up with a job that isn’t the greatest, but the pay is good so I stay. But I think I will also have a side gig that I passionately love and still make an income, but not as much as my steady job. But who knows, I might be able to find something I love and make lot’s of money from it. That would be my end goal! To make great money, in a career I love so much! I am passionate about fitness, and I have a fitness page on Instagram that I am trying to increase followers, and I am currently about to start a youtube channel/blog about fitness tips. I love it so much I want to make videos to help people, but in a long run, I hope I can turn it into a business; because I do see a business in it for me. I love it because I love talking about fitness and I love sharing my fitness journey and tips with people.

Student

Making a good living is far more important. Just because someone loves painting, does not mean they should try to become a painter; you still need money to live and provide for your family. I am passionate about music, but there are no real job opportunites out there at least from a marketing side. Or if there are, very slim pickings. I also love sports, so sports marketing is a very possible option; more so than any type of music marketing. At what point would it be good to think of the possibility of opening your own business?

Student

I believe that there can be an even balance between doing what you want and making a good living. I want to do something that I enjoy but I always want to be able to make a good living. I don't want my job to be the only thing in my life. I want to eventually have a family and have a life that's outside of my job. I don't want my job to only be a source of money, but I also don't want my job to be the only thing in my life. I'm really passionate about advertising. I love the images that can be created and the emotion you can evoke in people. I'm also outside of a practical career path, I'm also really really passionate about music. I love listening to all genres of music, new and old, and always stay updated on what's going on in the music world. Ideally, I think it would be really cool to work in marketing at a label. I think it'd be awesome to help market different artists and their music, especially how music is in this day and age.

Student

I've always been interested in psychology and follwoing consumer behaviors. I found that advertising was a great combination of both of my interests. This past summer I interned in media planning and I really enjoyed following consumer trends and the challenge to stay with the consumer through different trends in media. I'm excited where this passion and interest will lead me after graduation this May.

Student

I've always had problems figuring out what I wanted to do with my life but really, who hasn't? Once I knew that I was interested in the field of advertising, so many more opportunities opened up for me. I didn't realize how many options there were going to be in this field and it was actually a little overwhelming. I think I've finally decided on account research and planning. I'm always interested in why people do what they do and I think that would be a perfect opportunity for me to capitalize on that. I suppose it is an option to start or at least be a part of a market research business. I don't think I'm cut out to own or start a business but maybe sometime in the future it will be what I want to do.
