Will Vine Grow Into a Thriving Social Media Property?

Take a moment to check out Vine, the new social network from Twitter. Then, take a look at what the media is saying about it. Simply put, Vine is Instagram with video. Users can record five second, looping videos and post them online. Much like Instagram, followers can like or comment on posted videos.
This new social network has already had it's share of controversy (users uploading porn? oh no!) but is still growing quickly. In my opinion, the new platform suffers from lack of purpose, ie: why should I use this? But I felt the same way about Twitter, the iPad and Facebook.
Whether you are doing digital marketing, public relations or web design it's important to stay current with evolving technologies. My question to you is two fold,
- How do you plan on staying current with technology after you graduate?
- What do you think of the vine app?
Comments & Feedback
- I am actually pursuing a degree in Supply Chain, but when I graduate in May I would like to stay current with technology because I think it is a great asset to have and shows that you want to keep up with new trends. I think staying up to date with technology, no matter what profession you are in, is important to do... because you never know where you might end up one day. I could end up in marketing or advertising a few years down the line, but right now that sounds unfeasible! To stay up to date I think just handling my current social media accounts will give me a good insight when something new and exciting comes out. When I was on Instagram the other day, someone posted a picture of their Vine account and I instantly looked into what the new app was all about. People use social media so much that somehow, you can figure out what the latest technology trend is. Word of mouth is one of the biggest forms of advertising and I think this holds true for finding out what the hottest new trend is in technology.
- Personally, I also think the Vine app has no purpose and I do not think I would use it for myself ever. I could see maybe using it for a company I worked for, handling their vine account, if I wanted to show for example a 6 second marketing campaign. I also think it takes too much time to put together. I like Instagram because all you have to do is take a picture and pick a filter. Like the article from CNN stated, Vine could potentially get people into trouble. A friend could easily post a video of you while you were at the bar that a future employee could find. I think this is a lot worse than a picture of you with a beer in your hand. I am interested to see if Vine grows as much as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram did.
I am a very connected with new technologies coming from family members who are very interested in new technology. I know they will keep me updated as they do now. I also read a lot of blogs and articles about new technology because it is a very big topic to discuss in the work field. It is always good to have appropriate business discussion topics. Staying current with technology is much very easy for me because it is something I enjoy researching.
I have mixed feelings about the vine app. I dont think I would personally use it because I don't take many videos. Also videos that your friends and social networks would like to see would most likely not be professional. Another thing that was mentioned above was porn being uploaded, I dont think is any bigger of an issue than it is on other social media sites. Many blog sites such as read-it and tumblr have special tags for x rated material. I don't know how popular this app will get because I don't know many people that take a lot of videos, and I would personally never use it. For people such as skateboarders who do post a lot of videos of their tricks, or advertising companies this could be a great application so they could give previews of their videos.
After being in this class for a couple weeks it is obvious to me that I had not heard of some of the newer social medias. However, the biggest way I have learned about social media in the past is through word of mouth. I heard about Snapchat from a friend and keek I found out about in a class. I believe the biggest way to spread something is through our words/friends. It is funny because social media is how we share our lives and the way to share about social media is through our words. Actually talking to people and not just posting. I mean I did learn about instagram because of a post on twitter. So I do suppose social medias introduce each other because they all seem to connect. So as long as I stay on top of my medias I do have I am sure I will continue to learn more.
The vine app seems like it is still working out the kinks. I have a video app already called snapchat. Snapchat recently just added video so now I can do video and pics. It can be saved, written on, drawn on, and sent. I can change the time of the video or picture too. So I am not really sure if I would use Vine just yet, but who knows in the future. I mean I always liked Facebook and Myspace, but never wanted anything to do with twitter and now in the past three months I have been checking my twitter 2 and 3 times a day. It is crazy how addicting it can become.
As a new media digital marketing intern and with goals to continue on in the digital marketing world, keeping current with technology is what its all about for me. I don't plan on ever getting "behind the times" with technology and I believe my future career will support that. I believe that while keeping a blog, and reading other blogs and articles, knowledge of new tech is always at your fingertips. For me, graduating will not draw me away from the latest and greatest technology, but bring me closer as I embark further into the digital world.
I actually really like the vine app. I have been a moderate user of a similar app called Cinemagram on my iPhone for about a month now. A lot of my friends have gotten really into it, posting almost daily. These apps are an even closer view into the lives of our inner circles. I love it!
I have the same thought as you said- why should I use this? I have not yet entered the Instagram world. I don't get it. I can post pictures and stuff on youtube, facebook, and twitter...it is all the same. I suppose it just makes it more convenient? It will do just as good as instagram I am sure though, people will use anything you give them for free. As for if I am going to stay up with technology after I graduate- I plan on it yes, but I suppose I won't know until I am there! I thought I was up to date with technology now...but come to find out from the NMDL class, I am so far behind! Hopefully when I catch up some it will be easier to stay up to date.
After I graduate I plan on keeping up with the current technology as much as I can. Technology is always changing so it is a little hard to keep on top of everything there is out there. Keeping up with the social medias will be an easy one, it's getting used to all of the new things that come out that will be a bit of a challenge. I think the vine app is a little strange, however it could become useful. Every social network has it's share of controversy when you think about it. You can already upload pornographic material through a picture onto Facebook, Twitter, etc. This is just using motion. The good thing is that, I'm assuming, there would be terms and conditions and ways to report people abusing the app. I think the app could become very helpful once people get the hang of it, and learn not to abuse it.
Well, this app sounds pretty fun to me! I like taking pictures and videos but I prefer to record on video more since it is more lively and fun. I want to make every moment as a pretty cool video and this app will help my work easier. After I graduate, no matter I graduate or not, I think I will stay current with technology by using facebook and twitter. I don't really do bloggings so I don't think I would do blogs though.
I honestly don't think I will stay current with technology after I graduate... I probably will with phones and computers because I use those on a daily basis, but I won't with social media. Unless I have a job that is centered around new technology (hopefully I don't, because I am definitely not technologically-savvy) I probably won't keep up. There are so many new things and I'm sure my life will be hectic enough without having to keep up with technology and social media! Coming from someone who doesn't even have an Instagram, I think the vine app is a little weird. Pictures, fine! Videos... I don't know, it could definitely turn bad, like with the porn. I feel like that's what happens with all social media though, and eventually everyone will have it, just like Facebook and Twitter, and the downsides (like porn) won't be as big of a deal.
After I graduate, I plan on doing many of the same things I do now. I plan to look at Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date about evolving technologies. Continuing to follow Ross, Derek, and Graham on Twitter will be very beneficial as they are experts in the field. I agree with you Ross that my initial reaction to the Vine app is it does not have a purpose. I have a feeling many people will feel that way but then will use it when it becomes popular. I noticed that I did this with Twitter. For the first few years of existence, I refused to create a Twitter. It wasn't until literally I was the only one in my group of friends that didn't have one that I decided to make one. I think it will be the same way with me and the Vine app. I think the concept of using an app for pictures is easier than using an app for videos so I don't think Vine will become as popular as Instagram.
After i graduate college i dont think i will lose touch of techonology. But i say that now only because im surrounded by it everyday. But also in the workforce and usually in the advertising world you need to stay up to date or your ads can be spread to different ages of consumers. I know even my father who works as the manager of Latin advertisements is constantly asking me whats the new hip apps, even know he has a twitter (not to tweet) but to just be able to know what people are talking about. Social media/technology is key!
As an avid instagram user i think this is an unnesccary app. I think to keep this app from not becomes racey its by almost combining instagram with snapchat. Making the user only be allowed to view the video once. But that could take a lot of technology..
I think this app sounds pretty cool. With any video or photo apps you run the risk of innapropriate content being displayed, but overall that's a small risk so it's a pretty cool idea. To stay current I plan to check out media blogs and stay up on facebook and twitter. Also I read Ad Age and Archive magazines so that helps me know what current in the industry.
